Please explain the Server Population system

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Corvindi.5734

It’s already been stated by staff that a server’s population is in relation to online population, not accounts on the server.

No that’s not true, I mean that would be the common sense thing to do. So with anet you already know for a fact its the opposite and a dev posted that its accounts per server not logged in.

I guess there afraid if it was the way you believe it to work the peak amount of players would crash a server so instead they keep track of accounts.

I thought it was some weird mix of both, since the servers do show lower population during offpeak hours compared to prime time for that time zone.

It would actually be a good way to do it. Find some middle ground between total accounts and number of players on at any given time, then allow a few more to trickle in during off peak while keeping in mind that during events more people will probably get online than usual. Of course that’s just wild speculation, but it makes sense because I doubt that at 3 am on a Tuesday suddenly a number of players on the highest pop server get an itch to transfer.

—a fun, meaningful, non frustrating, profitable crafting system.
—housing (non-instanced) for social fun , and showing off our treasures
—something original for end game besides 1-3 hour dungeon grinding.
—to feel like after im leveled and geared that i am powerful and find loads of treasures.
—frequent events and holiday fun.

How could you make housing non-instanced?

Do you mean that it’s an instance with a small outside area such as a garden and not just an indoor cube of boredom like some games do?

I think he means like SWG, where the houses are out there in the open world – and not in separate housing instances like most games do now.

There are problems that can arise from that, but I can also understand why people like it that way.

Another game with non-instanced housing that is still around is Entropia. You can see the housing and you can go into a lot of them (the owner sets permissions) and wander around.

However, that game is something like a very pretty virtual casino for people who are richer than me. It’s still fun to wander around in, though, and wandering is free.

I feel like quitting the game due to Ascended Gear

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Corvindi.5734

All who quoted me have valid points, but I guess I’m more on the mindset what’s done is done and Anet whether one deem it as a PR thing or not has somewhat apologized and have acknowledged the impact it has had on a large number of players (maybe not the majority, but definitely a good bunch). I just do not know what else there is to talk about unless they are making even more changes like this to prevent you from achieving an “end point” in stat progression. But all I’ve heard from Anet is that to make up for it in the future. Until they can make sure you have access to these equipments across a broader range of thing such as doing WvW, other dungeons, etc. They will not release anymore content. Which imo is the best they can do after this change. Blaming them for it isn’t going to do any good, nor is complaining. I understand all the worry before they engaged the topic. But there was an AMA and interview about how they regard it as a badly timed (maybe designed) idea. But what’s done is done, Anet cannot get rid of ascended but they can make it easier to obtain which from what I read is what they are working on. I just don’t know what else there is to talk about. If there is a suggestion, put it in the suggestions forum. But I don’t see the point in speaking outloud about how you quit because of it or what you immensely dislike about it. They cannot remove it at this point, so it’s either accept that they’ll do their best to make it an easier transition for us in the future or I guess do what the OP (maybe) or others are doing and quit.

Actually, there is something more to say:

It’s been a few weeks now, but Ascended is still only available through Fractals and the grind has not been reduced.

Leaving me to wonder just how long does it take to throw this gear on the karma vendor and the badge vendor and to whip up some recipes for crafters, plus reduce the mat grind by, say, half? Two-thirds? Whatever.

Definitely the feeling of autonomy and freedom. As soon as my arm gets twisted to be more social more often than I want to be or to socialize in ways I don’t find fun, I quit. And yep, sooner or later I have quit every single MMO I’ve ever played that wasn’t complete garbage over this issue. Well, that and end game repetitive dungeon grinds (WoW).

I enjoy being able to depend on myself for everything I need in an MMO (like levels and gear) and I will only socialize: 1. When I feel like it and 2. When it’s voluntary.

Have you tried clicking the little yellow lightbulb on the

What's wrong with vertical progression?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corvindi.5734

Corvindi.5734

Vertical progression doesn’t bother me. Typical MMO vertical progression does. See my sig.

Also, see just about any other post I’ve ever made about my hatred of gems for gold. I was willing to tolerate it and even spend money for things like character slots and bank space when Exotics was the pinnacle of gear (except Legendaries for looks, and I never cared about that). But now there is a serious grind and more to come for the best gear and you can shorten that grind by opening your wallet. It’s distasteful to say the least.

Other players have issues with it because they don’t have as much time as the average player so they fall behind and no one wants to group with them. I have this problem for a different reason, I suffer from severe altitis, so even though I have time enough to play I’m never caught up with more focused players and so in vertical gear grind dungeon hamster wheel games the other hamsters don’t even want to play with me.

People who buy the game later suffer from this issue, too.

Also, it gets old. Vertical progression always seems to be tied to dungeons (again, see my sig). Why is that? And where are those alternate methods of getting Ascended gear that we were promises? It’s been a couple of weeks, no word on that? Why not?

Oh, and MMOs always tie it to forced grouping. No solo dungeon content for the best gear. Why not?

Why I don't play a game I loved

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corvindi.5734

Corvindi.5734

Good Luck OP. I hope you find a game that suits your playstyle.

Rift is doing a very good job of scaleable/soloable dungeons, maybe a free trial is worth a look for you.

Rift have soloable dungeons? What did you smoke? oO

That is what I was wondering. If it changed from raid or die at level cap, I hadn’t heard it. If they ever do allow players to solo instances AND have gear parity from it, I’ll buy the expansion in a heartbeat and make that my new home, though. Especially since they put in housing. If I hadn’t heard it was a very group-centric game I would have already bought it. Go Trion, go! Scoop up some solo player GW2 defectors, do it!

Anyway, yeah, in case no one can tell, I agree with OP. And putting in lockout timers would be perfect for keeping people in both open world and doing various instances. I’d love to have henchmen or heroes back for it.

But sadly I don’t see it happening. This game has been determined to thwart my unwillingness to group at every turn. Don’t group in Orr (and probably other zones) no loot drops. Don’t group in WvW? No loot or badges drop. I quit WvW over Ascended gear, but truth is I was thinking of quitting before that because of how stupid it is to require manual grouping to get loot, and that goes for open world PVE, too. It completely defeats the purpose of not having to group with the people around you to participate in content!

And to the cretins saying MMOs are supposed to be social experiences, I was in Teamspeak when I did WvW, how was that not being social enough for you?

"No Mounts" Mindset related to GW2

mounts = this game is for kids only.

let’s not do that. it was one of the worst things in ffxi.

on the otherhand, making travel (such as the ship to southsun cove) actual events would be nice. right now it seems like a teleport ship. =\ such actual-travel should contain content and maybe occasional enemies to keep you from afk.

I will quit this game immediately if mounts are introduced. Anything that "wow"s it up.

Because Knights on horses are childish.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s really cool :|?

Nope. I would love it. Especially mounted combat in WvW (probably need some serious map expansion to do that, though). I also think Tyria would be breathtaking to fly over.

3. Active combat, including dodging. Hard to play other MMOs that don’t have that now.
4. The Asura and Charr are pretty neat looking, too.

Yet ‘easy and functional’ do not describe an MMO with top end gear that is only available in dungeons yet has no dungeon finder.

I assume we don’t have one because that would make things too easy and functional, thus speeding up the process of content consumption?

I wish I could find a way to work in the MMO industry so I could learn why they make the decisions they do. They never come right out and tell us.

I think that those examples are tactical errors that will be fixed but that the overall strategy is still valid ….

The first step is people who care making a product for people who care.

The second step is people who care making a product for people who don’t care.

And the third step, so difficult to avoid, is that the growing organization starts hiring people, not necessarily people who care, to grow their ever-industrializing company. And since they are servicing customers who don’t care, those employees who don’t care can get away with it (for a while).

I actually hope you’re right as far as a dungeon finder goes, I’m a fan even if a lot of other MMO players aren’t.

As for your quote in general, I realized awhile ago that the people in charge weren’t interested in the obsessive fans so much as a large, general player base. And that does make sense from a strictly business viewpoint. The more attention a customer pays to your product the more likely that customer is to see flaws and seek out newer, better versions of your product as soon as they become available. Sometimes companies benefit from the more apathetic customers.

But if your employees adopt a don’t care attitude? Bad. Very bad.

Good players leave bad guilds and bad players leave good guilds, however, good players do not leave good guilds.

Its a player issue, not a system issue.

So essentially you’re saying “Do nothing” about the problem?

It’s like climate change then. Just ignore it and maybe it will go away.

This is one of GW2’s biggest issues. MMORPG.com and now Gamespy.com have both run articles about this issue. Numerous people in this thread have noticed the problem.

I don’t expect people with less than 500 hours in GW2 to realize it is even a issue but to those of us who are well over 500 hours it’s become apparent there is a pretty big problem with guilds in this game.

Say it’s a player issue all you want. Any economist would argue that it’s a system issue. Are you going to ask people to interact more in Guild chat? Stop guild hopping as much? Good luck with that approach.

Maybe we should just ask people to stop whaling, elephant tusk hunting, insider trading……….yeah, that will work. Maybe we should just ask people to get along instead of having laws next. 10,000 years of human history would disagree that works.

Argue all you want about human nature, it won’t change human nature.

Exaggerations and straw mans galore.

If you don’t want guild hoppers and shady people in your guild, don’t invite them.

There was a reason guilds in Everquest forced players to go through a 2 month initiation period.

So here is my theory about what Arenanet is doing. They built their game around focusing on the wants of a specific player base. Now that the game has gained steam they are now moving away from those niche gamers so they can focus on the larger mass market. Most people just don’t care about the changes and they are now making the game for these players. Here is an explanation of what I am trying to say…

http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2012/12/the-cycle-of-customers-who-care.html

Here is the money quote,

“Until soon, the product or service is used by people who don’t care so much about the original intent, they just want something easy and functional and available and cheap.”

Yet ‘easy and functional’ do not describe an MMO with top end gear that is only available in dungeons yet has no dungeon finder.

Buy orders combined with Guild Wars 2 Spidy data can help with costs if you have a few gold to tie up and if you are patient enough to wait for someone to fill your order.

The best part is, if you constantly find yourself getting overbid (say you want to pay 1.5 silver but the price never dips below 1.8) you can cancel your buy order and relist it higher for no cost.

I know why I didn’t get into playing the TP earlier (Black Lion not working right the first week or two after launch) but even so, it was pure laziness not to start using buy orders on some things right from the beginning. I’m much poorer than I would otherwise be because of that!

If you are looking for a gaming mouse I suggest the Logitech G600
(http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/g600-mmo-gaming-mouse?crid=825)

IMO its superior to the Naga in design, function and quality. The third ring finger button is amazing for weapon swapping. And the thumb buttons are designed in a way that makes it easier to navigate by touch between the 12 of them without misclicking or your thumb “getting lost”.

Razer products have always been hit or miss. They either work great or are total lemons. There really isn’t much middle ground. I myself had to RMA the Lycosa twice, the Naga three times (though once was for one as I got as a gift for someone else), and the Tron gaming mouse once (another gift).

Enough was enough and I got the G600 mouse and G110 keyboard and they have been nothing less than spectacular.

Just my experience. Other people might attest otherwise, and it’s entirely possible. Like I said Razer can be great, but their quality is super inconsistent and you are really gambling on what you will get.

No offense, but I hate you now. I desperately want a mouse that lets me use my ‘right side’ fingers (ring and pinky), but one in my price range didn’t exist when I went mouse shopping 3 years back and no way can I go mouse shopping for myself this year, so I’m going to have to use my G500 until it dies. Which looks to be for all eternity. It’s pretty darn tough.

I feel like this thread is turning into a Logitech infomercial and that I should go ask them to pay me something for saying this, but Logitech makes darn good rodents. Can’t say as much for their cheaper headsets, though.

Glad someone accepting the truth of this situation and at least a man enough to admit it.
I’m not blaming you or your kind, but would be nice if people just admitted that this was their resolve due to the unfairness of acquiring high end gear / mats.

Woman enough to admit it, actually. But eh, comes down to the same thing. I’m making ‘money’ off people’s mistakes, ignorance, impulsiveness, laziness, or errors in judgement. But then again, the more practiced traders are making money off me the same way.

But as to whether traders make money or just shuffle it, because of the gems for gold thing, we have the potential to drive prices up and therefore drive more players to purchase gems and exchange them for gold.

If I remember right, they went ahead and seeded the game with gold for people to buy from day one, so there is no reason to think that no gold exists in this game separate from what players create. If that is true then traders can indeed create gold by driving up prices.

I’m torn. On the one hand, I paid nothing past the initial purchase and the inventory space and character slots (which were optional) and I can play the game as much as I want or as little as I want while sampling various F2P titles whenever I want.

On the other hand, I hate gems for gold. Loathe it. Can’t even describe how hard it makes me cringe. Would so rather pay a standard sub than deal with it.

Also on the one hand I can see why churn and burn would be a great strategy in an economy like this one as well as a saturated market like the MMO market.

On the other hand, I really wanted to find an MMO I could happily spend years being a part of and loyal to.

What a horrible mess this is!

I refuse to believe the devs that are at the heart of this or any other MMO are at heart a bunch of bean-counting scrooges. I think they love creating games for players like us to enjoy.

But maybe I’m just being naive. My practical side says everyone is out to get me (not me personally, just everyone with a dollar in her wallet) and that it’s best to be cautious when purchasing anything. No more believing the hype. Let’s just see what there is to see and base our purchasing decisions on concrete reality, shall we?

Farming Gold vs Economy

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Stopping real players from farming in order to stop gold farmers is like cutting off one leg of every citizen in order to stop thieves from running away with the loot.

It’s bound to not be practical or popular.

Better yet, go to your local all purpose computer shop and ask to demo their collection of mechanical rodents and see which one is most comfortable for you.

I feel like quitting the game due to Ascended Gear

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Corvindi.5734

I have a questions for all these people who feel betrayed by Arenanet. Are quitting because of a new item tier or feel that because there are higher levels of progression their time spent playing is worthless.

Did you also intend to feel betrayed/upset when they added further levels to the game? Something they’ve were saying quite plainly before the game was even released.

New levels implies new areas to level in, not just a dungeon to run with new shinies to collect.

And no, I didn’t plan on feeling betrayed by the introduction of new levels because I read up on this game well before it was available for purchase and I remember reading that there would probably be more levels.

That is completely different from a dungeon hamster wheel.

Unless of course you’re willing to insist that the new levels would only have been achievable through dungeons.

Article discusses valid points about guilds

I read it. There were several things that made sense. I didn’t expect a pro-guild fellow to also be pro-dungeon-finder, but this guy was. Wisely, in my opinion.

Still, I have to disagree with his finger pointing as far as multi-guild membership is concerned. I would be more inclined to join a guild outside my family guild due to this feature.

I think the real issue is players are fed up with guild drama in particular and the ways and means of internet strangers in general. Let’s face it, if you’ve heard your guild leader’s romance woes once, you’ve heard them a thousand times and it’s just not new and entertaining anymore.

In the 13th century it was common for the peasants and serfs to blame the king’s advisers for their woes while exonerating the king.

Can we please get past this? The purpose of a company is to make money for those who own it, work for it, and invest in it.

The responsibility of workers/purchasers is to be savvy. Cunning. Smart. Dare I say jaded?

Are you happy with GW2? Great, carry on. If you’re not, stop spending money on the god kitten thing.

“Quitting the game” only works when there is a subscription model.

The types of people offended by the Ascended gear etc, don’t really amount to many microtransactions

Less players with low/zero ongoing revenue potential to use server resources for free, and servers can be merged reducing cost and improving population.

I think there should be a subscription fee / microtransaction approach to this forum – I would love to see how much “Waaaaahhhh” comes from jaded former players and malcontented sooks if it cost something to do it… I’d still pay to be a prick.

Well at least you’re honest. People paying to be pricks is what the cash shop model of MMOs are all about.

I didn’t quit. I just switched my pvp from WvW to the TP. Unfortunately, I just got pwned by some dye traders who made it look like prices were dropping or flattening earlier, causing me to sell off, then cry when I realized they were still jumping up. I have a lot to learn about this new form of pvp, but at least it’s not gear dependent.

And as for VOIP, well, future MMOs should provide that service built in from now on, especially ones like GW2 where the game mechanics make both reading text and responding so kitten inconvenient. My guess is, if this industry as a whole survives, we will have real, built-in VOIP standard in the near future. It’s sadly necessary.

Is GW2 becoming less and less solo friendly?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corvindi.5734

Corvindi.5734

Interestingly, I’ve never seen a solo player complain that others are allowed to group up and get the same loot as if they’d done something alone (even though it’s almost always much harder to do content by yourself).

It’s always social players who post angry, confused, and accusatory rants against solo players.

Stop it, already. If I had it my way, you could group with whoever you want, whenever. It doesn’t bother me, why should my ability to play without grouping bother you?

Are you that lonely and desperate for companionship? I’m an internet stranger, no friend of any of you, yet some of you get so offended when I go my own happy solo way in ‘your’ game. What is wrong with you people?

Arenanet vs Gold Sellers

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Corvindi.5734

Corvindi.5734

Nothing Anet can do with their gems for gold pricing or droprate will stop gold farmers and sellers. The only solution is to ban them and ban buyers, too. Which requires some serious detection, it seems, since no MMO has ever completely managed it, sad to say.

As for calling these guys professional, please don’t. It’s still mostly sweatshop and prison labor.

Anet should never have introduced gems for gold, I loathe the system and everything that comes with it and I think people who buy in game currency with real money…well, I won’t go into what I think of them, but if you are going to do it, at least be slightly less of a (won’t say it) and buy from the developers of the game you enjoy and not from some thieving gold farming company.

I think they should leave it. It’s hard enough to make money on the TP without making it easy for botters.

Not saying you are botting, but this does sound like an anti-botting measure.

No they shouldn’t leave it. It’s annoying. I’m not botting (I’d be the poorest bot in the world if I was)… it’s annoying. My game takes too long to load up. And I doubt it’s an anti botting feature since you see a huge ERROR message on the TP when I log back in. It is annoying.

Like I said, I wasn’t trying to imply you bot it, I just think it might be deliberately that way to stop the people who are botting.

As for a solution to the issue, I’ve been messing with the TP for a few days, and if I know I’ll be gone or alt-tabbed for more than a few minutes I log out to the character select screen, then back in. It doesn’t take long at all and the only time I had an issue was I had to move around to select an NPC one time today. Usually it’s no trouble.

The fact that you can’t finish your own personal story without a group is moronic and should never have been done that way.

As for the rest, if they want people to do dungeons, either put in a dungeon finder or bring heroes in to GW2 for those of us who think standing around typing ‘lfg’ is the most boring stupid way to spend an evening ever or make the dungeons soloable.

Any of those solutions would work for me. As for open world, stop making people group to get the best loot.

As for Orr…well, forget about Orr, the couple of times I went there before I found out about Ascended gear and gave up on gearing my level 80 Ranger I thought it was ugly and horrible to travel through even with a group of other players around.

Guild Wars 2 Should Go Free2Play

Planetside 2 is but one of the free to play games doing just fine (d&d, lotr, swtor, champions, etc). I will say this however about the item shop in gw2. It is already extremely similar to many shops found in other free to play games. With perhaps the exception of no actual legendary/exotic whatever rank gear for sale. I do expect them to be heavily considering it as the shop is already in place but not so soon after release. Keep in mind tho once sales reach the drop point having income flow in through item shop will be a temptation they wont resist. The whole fractals upward progress thing is a good example of a lacking will.

Yeah, okay. PS2 is fine. Well except for the hackers. More to the point, except for the horrible little tools buying all the latest hack toys.

And if they get banned they get to make a new account and come right back.

Cheaters/botters is just one reason games should have a fairly substantial box cost in every country they’re sold in.

The cash shop becoming even worse is another reason.

Yeah the higher the level the more friends you need. It is an MMO.

People join for the game but stay for the friends they make. So in a sense, they do “kinda force” you into making friends. Or at least expect you to be playing with others on a semi-regular basis..

It is a majour reason why guilds exist.

MMO devs are idiots on this issue. Everyone who would stay in an MMO longer for the sake of their online friends is going to make those friends with or without coercion. All they need is some basic tools.

And those of us who weren’t interested in ‘close’ online friendships aren’t going to be forced into it. It doesn’t work that way.

Dear Solo Player,

Please group with me! I can’t do this by myself, or maybe I’m just lonely.

Me to MMO Social Butterfly:

Sorry, Butterfly, I just feel like being alone today. And most days, actually.

Please make that rotten solo player play with me!

Dev Team:

Okay. We’ll give you Butterflies the best loot in the game and Solo Players will have no choice but to group with you or die to your gear ownage in PvP. And we’ll make sure they’re poor and dressed in rags, too!

Hooray!
