You might be able to counter a dodge spamming thf with wards.

the thief is using staff

And? Movement skills are interrupted by wards.

but not inside it. Im assuming you are talking about the hammer ward because the staff ward is worthless.. Thief can just use bandits defense, maybe get in a knockdown, probably a steal, spam vault, shadowstep (which every thief uses at no cost to evades).

Only thing that can hold the thief is dragons maw and even then its not guaranteed because of bandits defense and shadowstep which the thief probably is using.

Am I missing something but I think only shadowstep will help the thief escape any circular ward? The only other way through a ward is stability. You can’t evade through a ward, and neither can you block. They will both be interrupted.

You’re right. The best thing Bandit’s defense will do for a teef stuck in maw or hammer 5 is mitigate damage.

The reason why HoT is terribly designed

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Doctor.1905

I only started doing HoT maps like 2 months ago and I was able to get all HoT achievements+storyline achievements (except Golden Child grind) just by playing through the maps and googling parts that I didn’t know.

Don’t rely on people to just carry you through the event achievements. Put up a tag (commander or mentor) and yell out what you are doing. Put up a LFG for the meta event chain that you are doing. Don’t just follow people all the time. Lead squads of players. It’s the only way you’re going to get those less popular event chain achievements. Occasionally, people do hero’s point rotation maps in the LFG. Either join up and fight the champions or just form a map yourself. If you are a good player, you should be able to solo a lot of the hero’s point champions. Use the event timer on the gw2 wiki and plan your event based achievements ahead of time.

The most difficult part of HoT was getting the achievements in Hearts and Minds. Flights of fancy was a nightmare. I finally managed to solo it by gliding to the northern branch and dodging all of Mordremoth’s boulders while standing on the branch. I couldn’t find a pug good enough to survive Eir’s fireblast for Migraine so I had to solo that. Canach requires you to play a condition damage build to solo because you can not break his breakbar on his 2nd and 3rd phases.

Learn the mechanics of the canopy bosses and lead maps when nightfall hits. Put up a LFG to form a map. Even now, verdant brink maps can form as long as you play at a decent timeslot and you lead well. Do the same for the other 3 maps. You are the Commander right?

-Viper’s engie
-Power Phalanx Strength warrior
-Power hammer longbow trap dragon hunter
-Boonshare mesmer
-Power invocation revenant

Staff teef shouldn’t be spamming vault in the first place. Vault is too telegraphed and most hits will be evaded by anyone who knows how to dodge. Of course, in longer fights vault will eventually hit the opposing player but that initiative is better spent using staff 3 to cripple and apply more consistent pressure. They should be dodge 3ing, dodge jump 3, vaulting to close to gap, disengage, or cleave downed, engaging at 600 range with staff 4 (watch for the blind, autoattack until the blind wears off), and using 2+steal or dodge+steal. In between these evades, staff teef should be auto attacking as much as possible. Bandit’s defense will obviously not save a teef stuck in dragon’s maw since Test of Faith, Longbow 3 traited, f1, or even a purification on top of the teef will wreck a teef’s day.

The aftercast on dodge can be hidden by combining it with bandit’s defense, blinding powder, staff 3, jump staff 3, and vault but the aftercast on staff 3 and 5 can’t be hidden. A halfway decent pvper will know this and constantly land hits on a staff teef by watching 3, jump 3, and 5 or by simply counting his dodges and predicting channeled vigor.

I sometimes use staff pp acro trick daredevil for unranked. It has awesome 1v1 potential but it’s a really slow rotater. I think dp shortbow UC is an overall better build for arenas. Acro staff doesn’t have the burst or speed to really kill a UC teef in a 1v1 unless the UC teef decides to stick around too long in a 1v1.

Why hasn't condi chrono been touched?

in PvP

Posted by: Doctor.1905

Doctor.1905

I feel like the people who are in the dueling arenas all the time are weaker 1v1ers than ESL players or people who just ranked solo queue into several tiers of Legend. The reason why is because the people in unranked/ranked tend to have more competitive players than the players who just stay in the dueling arenas all the time. Also, duelists tend to shy away from “cheese” builds and they tend to avoid LOSing, doing jps, getting too far away from the opponent, kiting too much, etc. Arena fighters, unbound by these synthetic rules, play dirtier which ultimately results in a stronger 1v1 presence in an arena fight. Also, the regular duelists are constantly just standing around chatting, watching duels, and trolling rather than tryharding to win. I think almost everyone tries their best to win in an arena fight.

The meta chrono build is the best rotater right now but it is definitely not the strongest 1v1 spec. I can think of a few builds that can beat it in a 1v1 assuming both players are equal skilled.
-acro staff dp/pp or even shortbow daredevil
-meta DH
-meta scrapper
-meta druid

Other than f5 into moa+spam shatters, the meta chrono build really lacks burst that they can dish out at the start of a fight. That means that although invocation rev will lose to meta chrono in a 1v1, invoc rev can just jump a chrono and end the fight in a few seconds when the chrono is distracted by something else like let’s say a team fight. The slow damaging nature of the meta chrono sort of balances it out despite it’s good 1v1 potential and absolute best rotating potential.

Really the only thing that makes and breaks the chrono is portal (the best skill in this game in all 3 game formats). Watch Denial Esports and you’ll notice that Helseth constantly goes far and just sets a portal. He moves into mid to support the team fight. As soon as he sees that his team will lose the team fight, he sets down the portal so his team can regroup at far and play the side nodes. I feel like this quick rotation really does break the game. Make portal recharge longer in pvp only.

Right now we have (strongest to weakest):

Pact Commander
Rytlock (might go to jail forever)
Braham (not officially joined)
Rox (who?)
Marjory (will get corrupted by Lazarus)
Kasmeer
Taimi

The Pact Commander is heavily implied to be a female sylvari.
-Personal story is more coherent when you play it through on a sylvari due to Trahearne’s early introduction
-Chess analogy- If Trahearne is the “King” (a weak piece that needs to stay alive for the Pact to stay alive), the Commander is the “Queen” (the strongest piece that is used in dangerous operations)
-One achievement in HoT requires you to play a sylvari character
-It makes less sense for the 2nd in command to be male just like Trahearne

Dragon’s Watch needs more members.
-A sylvari (despite the commander being implied to be a female sylvari, an actual sylvari character should be added to diversify the cast) likely Canach and/or Caithe
-a transgendered character for diversity

Of course anyone knows the evade frame that comes at the end of bounding dodger or any dodge in general. Most people also seem to know that teefs block or hide their frame by using bandit’s defense or blinding powder at the end of their dodge. If you are facing a staff teef, you need to know the frame that comes at the end of staff 3, right after the swing at a jump 3, the 1/2 second of time you have after their jump 3 before their evade roll (teefs can hide this frame by using another action), the frame that occurs at the end of vault, the frame that disappears when they bound dodge+vault/3/jump 3, and carefully watch their staff auto number 3 which will reflect projectiles (teefs will occasionally use staff auto twice, stow weapon, use the third staff auto when they think you will use a projectile skill). For a dp bounding dodger teef, simply standing near their black powder can reveal a teef when they try to stealth in their powder a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time. Usually when they dodge/heartseeker inside their powder, they try to move away from you at their first dodge/heartseeker so you can catch them with an AoE. Do not use a blocking skill when you know a stealthed teef has basilisk’s venom up because if they play pulmonary impact, the hurt is real. Pulmonary impact dp teefs usually engage with a headshot and will chase with a headshot to try to potentially interrupt a heal so play around this. When you see a bounding dodger teef just kinda randomly dodge, pretend like this bound will hit you and dodge so you can potentially avoid their bound+steal combo.

Meta bunker druid does lose to an acro trick dare staff dp thief in a 1v1 but that’s beside the point because acro trick daredevil staff thief is rarely seen in pvp. In a conquest setup, a meta druid will typically either slowly win or draw a fight against pretty much anything.

OP pvp isn’t really about playing your own particular style and build. It’s either you learn to play meta builds and simultaneously learn to play against these meta builds or you play your special unique build and enjoy a less than 50% win/loss ratio.

I really don’t recommend going full berserker gear on anyone other than a warrior or revenant when you just casually pve because a lot of encounters will simply one shot you. There’s really a BIG difference between being one shot or two shot in pve. I recommend wearing zerker exotic armor and weapons and using a mix of soldiers ascended trinkets and zerker to find a good balance between damage and survivability. You can also play condi builds but those builds are more limited to a traitline and weaponset so it can be hard to make for a new player. If you are playing a necromancer (reaper), play rabid or vipers (if you can make it).

You can also make marauder gear which has a nice balance between survivability and damage. I like to use marauder gear mixed with berserker and soldiers trinkets on my thief when I casually pve.

Yeah I just no lifed for two days and got the title and I really like the map but I only have a few complaints.

-Anyone with a teleport can grab the north and south buffs way too fast. The stairway should be shortened to enable non teleport classes to get to the buffs faster. I understand that this was done with the intention of bringing teefs back into the meta but you can already port between home-mid-far fast enough using teleports anyway using the ledges in between the points.

-Team P Z needs to stop sending their entire roster to unranked. Almost every pug can’t beat a team that has a bunch of PZes and they keep voting for non coliseum maps.

-If I recall correctly, you gain a new skill if you get 5 stacks of a cheer buff. You can get these stacks by killing your enemies. This skill grants an extra 90 skill points to all your stats to everyone in your team. This skill needs to be renamed to “Are you not entertained!?” and do the same thing except it shuts up the crowd for 10 seconds.

I think all the top teams in the world championship had a signet condi necromancer on them. The winning EU team (Denial) had Drazeh play a signet condi reaper. It’s true that necros get focused down pretty hard and it’s also true and necros are pretty crappy in 1v1 right now but they act as the artillery of the group. In a team fight, the signet reaper is definitely the most dangerous force because of the way they can condi bomb and shred down anything due to their signet boon strips. Staff 2345, scepter 2, reaper 354, well of corruption, and chilled to the bone can be used to cleave the downed bad guy and his bad guy rezzing buddies straight down into hell where they can think about what they did before they respawn. I feel like necros are pretty balanced in conquest right now.

What is the proper way to rotate?

in PvP

Posted by: Doctor.1905

Doctor.1905

So I’m doing pvp and I’m trying to kill the bad guys. Sometimes I kill them and sometimes they kill me even though I’m a good guy and this is fine except my team mates keep telling me IN CAPS LOCK TO ROTATE! They whisper mean stuff to me after the game ends. Naturally, I whisper them a clever comeback but they are set offline so I can’t retort. After being told to ROTATE over a million times I’ve been thinking yeah they are right. I asked myself, do I know how to rotate and no.

Let’s say you’re playing a meta druid and you are in Kyhlo. Your dash teef heads home and you head mid. You get into the mid fight and within 20 seconds, your necro team mate gets downed and dies. Your power rev is being focused down after using his glint heal and he’s definitely going down. The other team is nearly in full health because you don’t know how to do damage. You’re in good condition because meta druid is immortal.

Do I try to recover from this losing mid fight and rez the rev? Do I flee away from the mid fight and sneak over to far point? Do I play defensive and hold the one home node that we still have? If I can decap far point, do I full cap or leave it uncapped to go to the mid fight? In this situation, I would just go to far node knowing that my rezzing necro will slowly take his butt over to home node to cut off the bad guys but this doesn’t always work the way I imagine it.

Let’s say we win the mid fight in Kyhlo and kill 3 players. We now hold home and mid point. I see that their power rev is heading to far point to defend the one node they have. Do I attempt to snowball and fight the power rev (on the point that he holds) in a 1v1? Do I bunk mid point and say in team chat that I’ll be holding mid?

Let’s say I’m playing a power rev and we hold the home and far nodes in Legacy. I see that a condi necro is slowly running toward me (I’m in far node) and my team mates won’t be coming in to bulldoze the necro. It will be a 1v1. I see that the condi necro has a sweet pvp title and the Ascension and I’m thinking yeah he’s going to eat me in 1v1. Do I 1v1 him anyway because I hold this node? Do I retreat and try to sneak into mid node?

Let’s say I’m playing whatever and we’re in legacy. We overpower them in the initial mid fight and the next few fights after that because we snowball them. We hold all 3 nodes and we have a significant advantage over them. Despite the fact that their team has fast players (a meta condi mesmer and a dash teef), they don’t attempt to spread out and instead they regroup and sent all 5 into their home node (our far node). I’m hovering between home and mid to cut off any bad guy who tries to backcap us but I can clearly see that we are fighting a 4v5 on far point. My team mates are losing pretty fast and the bad guys will probably bulldoze through me pretty soon. Do I stand between home and mid and yell at my team or do I go into far node to prevent them from regrouping?

Exactly when should you be snowballing and when should you be holding two nodes? When should you be taking the 1v1 and when should you be peeling off to help another node? If you are 1v2ing the bad guys on a node that they hold, are you giving your team an advantage if you just stall these two bad guys for a really long time? Are people who vote non Coliseum maps in unranked sadists?

Please fix underwater combat

in Revenant

Posted by: Doctor.1905

Doctor.1905

Revenants can only use Shiro and Mallyx underwater. Since legends can’t be saved for underwater combat, Revenants start with 0-2 underwater legends when they hop in the water. This forces Revs to play Shiro and Mallyx on land to prevent a variety of issues.
-it’s annoying to constantly change to Shiro and Mallyx underwater AND THEN switch back to whatever legends we use on land
-if we jump in the water while in combat we effectively cripple ourselves unless we normally play Shiro and Mallyx on land

Another small issue is the fact that we can only use one aquatic weapon despite the fact that we can weapon swap. This makes our weapon swap function useless unless we utilize on swap sigils.

The final issue is that we can ONLY play Shiro and Mallyx with a spear underwater. Every class has at least some sort of aquatic variety by using different utility skills but we get none. It’s clear that this class was rushed to a point where underwater combat was almost ignored. This issue makes Revs seem like an unfinished class imho.

Simple fix: Let Revenants save legends for underwater and land combat.

Long term fix: Give Revenants another aquatic weapon (like a trident) and allow more legends to be used in water.

Revenant Underwater Feedback

in Revenant

Posted by: Doctor.1905

Doctor.1905

Yeah Revenants have some serious problems with underwater combat. Only Mallyx and Shiro can be used can be used underwater and the game doesn’t let you save legends for underwater and land combat. We’re forced to swap into Mallyx and/or Shiro when we jump underwater AND THEN swap back into whatever other legend we were using when we jump out of water. This can be fixed by simply letting Revenants save underwater and land based legends. Adding another legend for underwater combat would be nice as well.

How would you redesign the Zhaitan fight?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Doctor.1905

Doctor.1905

Once the final eye is defeated, Zhaitan screams and flails wildly seemingly trying to kill the players. The players figure that they completely blinded the dragon with that last eye. At that point, pact reinforcements from the sea, air, and ground miraculously appear. The air forces successfully defeated all of Zhaitan’s dragons. The ground forces managed to regroup after Trahearne’s Caladborg strike. More ships and submarines were previously ordered by Trahearne before his death while the players were fighting Zhaitan. The pact blows up Zhaitan from the air, ground, and sea. Zhaitan’s health goes from 80% to 0. The dragon’s head is chopped off to provide proof of its death.

The whole Zhaitan fight takes about 30-40 minutes. This part is by far the hardest part of Arah story. Due to this fight, Arah story is more difficult than any other dungeon path except perhaps TA aether path and Arah p4.

No one cheers after Zhaitan’s death. The pact lost over 80% of its troops during this fight and its leader Trahearne. This devastating battle leaves the player character to wonder about the future of the pact.

The end of personal story consists of the remaining pact soldiers carrying bodies back to their loved ones. A mass burial and memorial is set up in Fort Trinity. The player character is devastated by the battle and he/she simply wants to rest without the burden of an entire army to lead. In his/her speech to the pact, the player character refuses to lead the remains of the pact. The pact’s flag remains but the pact itself separates throughout the next few months.

Having the pact disband would explain why the pact wasn’t directly involved in Scarlet’s attack on Lion’s Arch. It also explains why the pact was nearly dormant for 2 years after Zhaitan’s death.

Arah storymode has an easy mode which lets players play through a cookie cutter version of this to get personal story credit. The easy mode only has standard storymode dungeon rewards. The normal mode gives Arah tokens and 3 gold upon completion much like the Arah explorable paths. In addition, an achievement and a title is awarded to players who complete this mission in normal mode without any restarts.

Yeah this is what I wish would have happened to Arah story.

Zhaitan- phase 2
The 5 players decide to retreat back to Trahearne’s location. Risen pact members, risen Destiny’s Edge, risen troops, dragons, and a flightless Zhaitan chases the players and tries to kill them. This part is pretty much a jumping puzzle.

At the shipyard, Trahearne uses his Caladborg to cleanse the risen forces attacking the players which kills all undead surrounding Zhaitan including Destiny’s Edge. This exhausts Trahearne to death. The pact ships and submarines attack Zhaitan. Zhaitan shields himself with his wings. He is now fighting alone against the players and the pact ships.

Zhaitan- phase 3
Zhaitan’s health bar appears. The players cannot damage Zhaitan.
The players must run into Zhaitan, sneak through his wings, and attack Zhaitan face to face. Their goal is to slice off one of Zhaitan’s wings so that the pact ships can finish him off. Zhaitan uses a few very telegraphed attacks on the players. The fight is similar to fighting Lupicus in melee except every attack by Zhaitan, except his projectile attacks, will put players in a defeated state. Zhaitan also uses some fairly rapid projectile attacks which hit around 3-5k on zerker light armor. The players have to slice off Zhaitan’s wing in less than 3 minutes otherwise Zhaitan will use his breath which forces players to restart back to the start of phase 3.

After Zhaitan’s wing is cut, the pact ships and submarines bombard Zhaitan which takes off 15% of his health. Zhaitan runs up to the ships and claws them all up. Now only the players and the 10 submarines remain.

Again, the players run into Zhaitan to cut off his other wing. While this is happening, the submarines attack Zhaitan dealing nearly no damage. This fight is similar to the last one except Zhaitan uses two new attacks. A dark well attack (4-7k per tick on light zerker), and a claw swipe (instantly defeated unless dodged). The wing has to be sliced off in less than 3 minutes otherwise Zhaitan will use his breath.

When the other wing is cut, Zhaitan dives underwater and eats up the 10 submarines. Zhaitan jumps back to shore and faces the 5 players. He vomits up some mangled risen pact soldiers to attack the players.

Now hopeless, the players decide to put up a final stand against the dragon by popping his eyes. Zhaitan uses a new set of moves that, like before, puts players in a defeated state if not dodged. In addition, Zhaitan periodically vomits up risen pact fodders. The claw attack, well attack, and projectile attack remains. The players have 5 minutes to destroy Zhaitan’s eyes before Zhaitan uses his breath. After four of Zhaitan’s eyes are destroyed, Zhaitan’s eye (King Doric) comes out of the dragon. The players must kill this eye to end Arah story.

How would you redesign the Zhaitan fight?

I would completely change the entire game’s storyline. I personally think that the personal story was good up until Victory or Death.

Arah storymode begins in Fort Trinity after the Source of Orr. 5 Player characters, all seen as pact commanders, meet with Destiny’s edge. Each player chooses a task they will do.

One player commands 15 pact airships to clear the way for the Glory of Tyria.
One player commands 10 pact submarines and 10 pact ships to enter the shipyard area in the cursed shore.
One player commands 15 pact tanks and 20ish pact fodder to enter the gates of Arah.
One player commands a stealth group that sets up Asuran gates inside Arah.
The last player fights alongside Destiny’s Edge on board the Glory of Tyria.

Each player will fight mostly solo alongside npcs until the final fight against Zhaitan.

All the airships, submarines, ships, tanks, and fodder return from Fort Trinity, by themselves, if they are lost/killed before the fight against Zhaitan to keep the storyline easier.

During the way to Arah, the risen ambushes the forces at random locations. It is up to the players to give each other backup support if they are losing a fight.

Each player will be ambushed by one boss during the fight to Arah.
The airship commander gets ambushed by Fafnarin the Heartslayer and other fodder dragons.
The sea commander gets ambushed by Ogravros the Moondeath and a few Risen on ships.
The ground commander gets ambushed by a mouth of Zhaitan.
Stealth group gets hit by a Risen Lich.
The Glory of Tyria doesn’t get ambushed by a boss but it has to support the other 4 players because the fights are unbeatable without the Glory’s support.

The way there is relatively short, only taking 30-40 mins because of how the Pact already cleared most of the way into Arah beforehand.

The sea commander leaves his command to join any of the other 4 commanders for their assault in Arah. 3 Big boss fights occur inside Arah.

Three very large Risen Giants – The players coordinate their pact troops to take down these giants. It’s not as easy as just reflecting their projectiles this time but it is a fairly casual fight.

At this point the stealth group sets up the Asuran gates. The stealth commander joins any of the other 3 commanders.

Atempancatli the Defender – The second in command of the Risen troops next to Zhaitan. About 2x the size of Tequatl. Leads a bunch of other dragons and risen ground troops. Pact reinforcements from the Asuran gates mostly keeps the risen ground troops at bay. Most of the fight is above Arah. A fairly difficult fight.

After the fight, Trahearne joins the fight by entering Arah through the Asuran gates. He runs over to the pact ships by the shipyard to prepare for a full scale retreat in case something goes wrong with the battle.

Zhaitan’s eye – A large flying eye of Zhaitan that was once King Doric. Summons many other flying eyes of Zhaitan that attacks the pact ships. Each eye has an identity of a previous king of Orr. This fight is incredibly easy and quick.

All this takes about 20-30 minutes. After the fight, Zhaitan appears and Zhaitan’s eye bonds with Zhaitan himself. Zhaitan immediately wipes out all 15 of the player commanded pact airships by crashing through them in a cinematic. The airship commander miraculously survives and joins the other players. The Glory of Tyria retreats to the ground to gain ground support from pact tanks. Many pact airships still exist in Arah but the ships are too busy fighting some other risen dragons to help the players at this time.

Zhaitan- phase 1
The Glory of Tyria prepares its ray gun while Zhaitan and his forces bombard the pact. The Glory has a shield that can block Zhaitan’s breath attack. Failure to block the breath results in a game over, forcing the players to restart at a checkpoint (the start of phase 1). The commander of the ground squad has to constantly launch artillery fire on Zhaitan and smoke screens near the Glory of Tyria to annoy Zhaitan enough to prevent him from crashing through the pact’s tanks and the Glory of Tyria which also results in a loss. While this is happening, risen ground troops and dragons attack. It is up to the players to defend the Glory of Tyria using the Glory’s cannons, the tanks, and good old fashioned fighting.

The ray cannon cuts off Zhaitan’s tail which makes Zhaitan crash into the ground. Without a tail, Zhaitan can’t seem to keep his balance enough for him to fly. Zhaitan gets mad and he launches a breath attack on the pact which wipes out the Glory of Tyria and all of the player commanded pact ground troops. The players all miraculously survive this attack but all members of Destiny’s Edge dies.

It never starts in the Iron marches. People can bypass the event for personal story but it blocks progress for the Mordrem Problems achievement.

Tried yesterday solo/group, talk to npcs before the final attack/after and had no success.

Got the achievement just now solo.

What I did differently was that I waited for the 10 minutes to expire before going to save the npcs in the cave. After that I talked to the 7 npc and got the achiev after saving the last one, I did not let them die.

Maybe this helps. Anyway this one is a really non-intuitive and badly explained achievement.

I can confirm that this works. What I did was I waited about 5 mins after the 10 min timer ran out before I made the decision to help roxx or braham. I chose roxx. I, then, went to rescue Lindsay without the 10 min timer on my screen. After rescuing Lindsay, I rescued all 7 stragglers without getting them killed and I got the achievement as soon as the last one was rescued. It seems like the timer is causing this bug. I did this solo of course.

Edit: Note that I did this 10 mins before I made this post. This method should work for all of you guys.

Yes it is bugged. There’s another thread here and several threads on the game bug section discussing this bug. Anet seems to be ignoring it though for whatever reason. The July 17th patch made this achievement completely impossible to attain.

It bothers me that they didn’t even playtest the achievement even once before implementing the July 17th change.
