We stopped at Rate 4 speed (25 seconds per aetherium) and then of course had to get capacity 5 for SMC claiming. We could have gone rate 5, but doing the math it would have pushed our +5 back by three days, even though it would have in the long run brought everything past next tuesday up. It was an acceptable tradeoff and after our level 40 expansion, we’ll be returning to snag Rate 5 and 6 in the next few weeks.

At the risk of sounding like a kitten murderer…

The cost for the upgrade was exactly what was listed: 20 badges of tribute, 200 large scales, 100 mystic coins, 50 piles of crystaline dust, 50 leaf fossils, and 25 evergreen lodestones.

In the process of getting to +5 we got a lot of other cool things unlocked as well. We now have 8 permanent auras that we either had to pay for twice a day, or simply never used because they were inconvienent. We never have to pay extra influence to rush things. We have a pile of other upgrades that we can build and use. We have guild siege blueprints. We have a load of boosts we can get at our guild tavern. We have a nice arena that is coming along quite well.

For all that we had to spend a lot of materials to get the prerequisites and guild level 37 required for +5 supply, it’s not like those things in and of themselves aren’t useful. They’re being used a lot and we love having them as well. If you look at the sum total of things that it took to get to +5 you miss the fact that they were all useful in and of themselves and that the only amount of that which was really spent on the +5 was the mats and aetherium for just that +5.

It’s not like the mats, time, and money used on all the items for the prerequisites was spent into a void.

If you think that you’re getting ‘not really all that much in return’ you should really be talking to the person that is in charge of your guild upgrades. A proper path to +5 should not only be efficient, but for the most part, filled with practical and useful upgrades that also benefit the guild.

I do have a spreadsheet that shows everything we have but due to the way that I put it together, I don’t have a historical record of the order in which I bought them. I should have thought of that but I was focused on watching where we were going, not what we’d already done.

Also, 5 months +1 extra for possible delays due to favour cap/wasting aetherium due to not upgrading immediately when possible is still 6 months. Notice how all that presumes not having any problems from gathering materials, it really is the max speed, which won’t be the case for a huge majority of the guilds out there.

So yeah, Anet’s predictions are still mostly correct. They still weren’t made with the 10-man guilds in mind.

As the one who ‘did the math’ I have to agree. While it’s possible that a 10-20 can make it happen in the 6 month time frame, I would have to say that it isn’t very likely. That being said, I’m sure there will be a few guilds that do and my hat is off to all of them.

All this aside, we’re a WvW guild and therefore we chose very early to work towards the goals of maximizing our WvW unlocks. Supply +5, Presence of the Keep, and Airship Defense were outlined on Day One as our goals. A plan was put into place to maximize the build efficiency of the guild hall to get to these points with maximum speed.

The materials cost was, frankly, irrelevant next to the worth we placed on the goals. This was and continues to be a guild-wide initiative and has been a great thing for bringing our guild together for a common purpose. A purpose which we as a guild have knocked out of the park.

CERN has done an amazing job of stepping up and getting everything that we’ve needed to make each and every materials goal that we’ve asked of them. As the head of the Guild Hall development, I have been consistently humbled by the generosity of the guild.

Given that Sabotage Depot is basically WvW Scribe 101, as long as you have new scribes in training in your guild you will never run out of these. As we continue to unlock schematics for WvW we are finding a fairly nice scribe progression ladder that will eventually help new scribes level mostly from 0-400 through WvW upgrades alone. We’re still unlocking stuff but the full picture is coming clear.

Guild Siege Golems are a level 400 schematic involving 5 orichalcum reinforced plates (1 supply sack and 5 ori ingots each) , 3 alpha blueprints, and 5 Badges of Tribute.

The larger/smaller guild symbiosis is starting to develop. With watchtower a 375 scribe recipe and very useful, you’ll even see the mid-size guilds claiming towers for the big guilds to slot watch tower into.

The Watchtower recipe is 2 BoT, a Resonating Core, a Strategic Defense Map of the Mists, and a bag of incandescent energy

The flax fiber requirements for everything WvW related is stupid. Not enough drops in WvW for it to be something that can be rationally collected in the game mode that it is being most used in.

What is very interesting is that Guild Siege Golems are amazingly cheap to build with supply (50) and at this point can only be crafted by a level 400 scribe. The base materials run currently about 10-12g per golem. This will have an interesting effect long term, I think.

The supply +5 issue for roamers will be changed in that they will no longer be able to +5 camps on the fly. Their best best will be to base out of a +5 keep and run from there if necessary. Start off with some bonus supply and grab more as you can from camps you flip. Obviously a change from where they were.

Also, the +5’s will start dropping no later than tomorrow. It’s coming back.

Nope. Even a large guild running at max capacity won’t finish a fully all-upgrades available guild hall until middle of march. That’s 5 months and that’s for a very large guild running fast-mode through this stuff. A 10 person will take significantly longer.

It really should be. Given when I first got fast yaks, that is where I put them, I was astounded at how fast they went. 1:10 to rampart east, 1:20 to rampart west. It’s amazing.

Anet should have you on their Xmas list for spending all the money for gems to convert to gold to be able to get scribe that high and pay for all those upgrades:-) Either that or you spend the majority of your life in pve farming..

I’m not against you doing so (it pays for the game to keep running, after all), but for most wvw players that kind of expense day in day out just to use a few boosts in wvw is very expensive.

You highlight another issue too. If you happen to leave the game then our guild might not have another scribe anywhere near your level and all those guild upgrades become pointless. I’m waiting for the first ‘guild recruiting scribe, must be 350 or above to apply’ or people offering money to import a scribe to their guild.

I’m glad you had fun on reset night. But really you’ve highlighted a lot of the problems with the new system and the huge cost which puts a lot of people off even trying, especially smaller guilds.

Will they address the issue? Whilst people are popping the card in and buying gems, not a hope.

Truth is, I’ve spent zero gems on upgrades for the guild hall or my scribing. I literally have not sold gems for gold in over two years. Every gem I’ve purchased in about the last year has gone to Skins, Item boosters, infinite harvesting tools, Transmutation stones, and Bank tab expansions. I haven’t even purchased black lion keys. While I’ve spent money on gems, they’ve almost all gone to outfit and skin related expenses. (Yes, my asura guardian -needed- the glittering wings backpack, you just don’t understand)

The greater issue that you raise is one of guilds helping to support and level up scribes. When it takes the effort of a huge guild to level a scribe up to 388 and then decide to just hold there because the entire guild can’t afford the last 12 levels to 400 it greatly highlights a few issues.

First: that person is practically married to that guild now. That much effort on the part of the entire guild is phenomenal and to leave the guild, the server, or the game would be unconscionable to me.

Second: The amount of expense at this point in time is wholly ridiculous. I know that as we unlock more options in the guild hall, things will open up more, but the mountain is very steep at this point in time.

Third: It cost 600g of mats to go from Scribe 375 to 388. See points 1 and 2.

So yeah, there may be issues of “scribe for hire” or “350+ only apply” I’m already proving scribe services to two other guilds on our server just so that they can get stuff made. I’ve personally crafted and sold hundreds of fine paper for people doing the Flameseeker precursor quests. I’ve even advertised on LFG: 350+ scribe willing to scribe for mats and tips. I do this not to make money but because I know there are people out there that need the stuff done and can’t afford to level scribing. The tips at this point merely help to offset the cost of getting scribe up to that point to begin with.

To a degree, it’s a bit unfair to people, but it actually brings a crafting discipline to a game that mimics a real life situation where not everyone can do the high end stuff. The fact that the game economy up to this point valued raw materials more than their crafted products was an issue. The time and effort required to refine a material actually devalued it, due to the fact that for every crafting discipline prior there was practically zero time or effort actually required. With scribing, this is no longer the case.

@Downwood.3192:

Just a few pessimistic words:
-Maybe they “fixed” the upgrade-trolling, but they still didn’t fix the claim-trolling. If a guild without any/low Aura claims a keep, you can’t overwrite it with your own guild, even if you have “higher” Aura. With +5 tied to Auras, it can be considered trolling.

-Personally I don’t believe that the lack of choice is better, but maybe that’s ‘cos we didn’t have many upgrade-trolls on our server for a long time, so it was not a problem for me… (And back then we could do paper-WP for fun-farming raids, I could start cannon earlier in Hills than in Bay, ‘cos it’s better there, etc.)
But they just reintroduced the same problem as “Lacktivators”. “Soon” there will be a “meta”, “the best possible combination” for the guild-upgrades, and if you are not using it, you still can be considered a troll… Yes, it’s a lot more expensive to do it just for fun, but it’s only a money-wall, nothing else is stopping it.

Good points!

I believe that the keep claim trolling will be kept to a minimum. While it’s possible, I doubt that any trolls will have the materials capacity or willpower to put forth the immense effort to unlock Keep Claiming for the sole purpose of preventing auras from being placed on the keep. I think that was one of the goals of ‘gold sink’ idea of the entire system. They’ve effectively made it nearly impossible for super small troll guilds to get the ability to do that sort of trolling. Unfortunately, it also means that super small not-trolly guilds are in the same boat.

I don’t know if there will ever be a meta for keep claiming upgrades. Maybe? I can see all of them being useful depending on the situation. Maybe Iron Guards are a little lackluster, but that’s a balance issue. I think until we have guilds that actually have everything unlocked and we’ve been able to start giving all these things a try, we’ll have to reserve judgement. It may be a year from now until there is enough data for balance to even be addressed.

We, unfortunately, were commonly beset upon by upgrade trolls. People would pop 1000 supply upgrades on a keep just as it was being attacked in order to drain the keep and prevent supply use for defense. This was seriously common and a huge issue, especially in tournament seasons. I’m sure we weren’t the only ones.

[Survey] Guild Upgrade Costs

1: 430, probably 400 are active participants in WvW. Either with us or other guilds.

2: I do not feel that any of them are truly essential. They are, however, very useful and the +5 supply will be greatly beneficial

3: We have so far earned 20 upgrades, including war room restorations. We have the first five auras, all four claiming, and a number of scribing upgrades. We maintain being on track for +5 next week. I honestly haven’t kept track of how much it’s cost.

4: We have been taking donations from players and so far our crew has been very generous. For the most part it’s been a fairly amazing group effort. I think having spread out our requirements over so many people it’s softened the burden. I’ve personally given up a lot of time from both WvW and PvE in order to organize the whole thing. (there is a running joke about being trapped in the mine with an abacus)

5: I would say that the actual play style in WvW hasn’t changed much. We do enjoy the new toys that we can play with and I don’t think that we’d ever have so militantly guarded a camp before the introduction of Dune Rollers.

6: I think that the system should be tied to rewards and drops from WvW. I do not mind the grind or even the quantity, but I think we should be able to get these materials in reasonable quantity from WvW. With various mats being required for the production of tactics and improvements in such quantity that we can’t be reasonably capable of getting them from the WvW playstyle, we’re being forced into PvE in order to supply our WvW playing, and that is a violation of the core guiding principles of GW2.

I don’t think anyone has a problem with fun. But honestly it doesn’t bother you a little? The time and gold put in, by your own quote, to make the borderlands feel like they did before HoT. Not time and effort gold spent to make it better, no. You did all that just to get back to the norm. I still play I still have fun. But in the back of my head it always bothers me when I think about it.

Doesn’t bother me in the least. Part of the reason it was enjoyable is that we didn’t feel like we were required to do any of it. In fact the fast yaks turned out to be a waste. It took us long enough to get a camp up to the point that we could slot it, that the keep fortified after only two fast yaks. We would still have had all the fun and all the fights even without the stuff we did. But, it added to the fun.

Basically, it came down to personal preference and choice. Before there was a linear set path that everyone took to upgrade keeps. We all knew the path and any variation form that path was met with resistance or ridicule. Now that path is fixed. But, if there is a good group of yak slappers running out there it will now take what is still a good amount of time to upgrade and we don’t have to worry about supply trolls messing things up. So, now we’re back to a situation where the player can have fun by picking and choosing what upgrades and other fun fortifications or such get put into keeps. It’s not mandatory, it’s optional, and it’s fun to have some variety and choice in what we do. I’ve never felt like I had to do any of the upgrades that I dropped into any objective.

And I think that’s why it’s fun. It’s our choice as players what we want to do with the things we’ve earned, unlocked, and built. I don’t have to spend my money if I don’t want to. I don’t have to pay for a waypoint to be built.

The new system gives us back the power to choose where to put our money and our resources. And that, to me, makes it more fun.

So, one guild spent all that money to claim something and put something on it. How long did it last until flipped?
How long until enemy realises something has tactics bought on it, and ensure it flips during the huge hours of deadness that exist on most BLs?
How much does it cost to a. get the guild to that level and b. each time you use it, compared to how much you ‘make’ in wvw standing around defending the object.
Unless you can make more from defending than it costs to upgrade in this way, it’s unsustainable longer term.(ie, another gimmick).

Honestly? I didn’t keep track of how much. Not for the scribing to 388 where I’ve stopped for now. Not for the guild hall. Not for the siege.

For one, I was too lazy to bother.
For two, I didn’t want to get into arguments over how much I’ve spent. Those become kitten debates that I have no interest in being a part of.

Mostly, we wanted to have fun, so we did what we needed to do to have the fun we wanted to have. We used 3 speedy dolyaks, 2 Dune Cycles, 3 armored yaks, a chilling fog, a hardened gate, and a hardened siege on reset night. How much did it cost? Not sure. A lot of the mats are graciously donated by our guild and I tend to buy flax fibers by the stack to fill in and don’t really keep track.

Why did we do it? Because it was how we wanted to have fun that reset night. And we did. It was a blast. It made the borderlands feel like the did before HoT. It was totally awesome. Great fights, great fun.

I don’t know how long it lasted after we logged. At some point we’ll get back to the place where a fully upgraded/improved keep will get the attention that a waypointed Bay or Hills used to get. We’re not there yet, but lack of coverage never stopped me from upgrading bay, and it won’t stop me from having fun on the new BL’s either.

To be honest the lack of ‘OMG CATS ON WP HILLS’ is kind of nice and relaxing. We can have fun on our own terms. Given that I’ve personally scribed, if not personally funded, 90% or more of the slotted upgrades that TC has so far placed into claimed objectives, I’m in the best position to be disappointed about losing them, and I’m not.

It’s how we’ve decided to have fun, and so far, it’s a blast.

so is this the first stonemist claim ?

These things are still vitally important. Flipping an undefended camp that has been upgraded with speedy yaks is now of an amazing amount of importance. Running yaks is now feasible with their protection bubbles. With the dearth of +5 supply, being able to show up and put those last 6 supply on a ram for a commander can be the difference between taking a keep or not.

Can the tactics be run in multiple structures by the same guild or can they only hold one structure at a time?

This is a large part of the reason so many of our defenders/upgraders had multiple small or solo guilds.

Yes and no.

Tactics and Improvements can be slotted by any guild provided that the claiming guild has held the objective for the required amount of time. Going back to the OP. On reset, CERN claimed the keep on SoS BL and slotted a number of upgrades. Two smaller guilds claimed SW and NW camps and CERN slotted Armored and Speedy Dolyaks in said camps, which resulted in yaks hitting Fire keep at double the usual rate. (And there were Dune Rollers in NW camp, which are awesome).

By changing the focus of the defense to the optional use of tactics and improvements which are, by and in large, significantly more expensive to build than the original old fortifications we still have the defensive priorities for objectives, though the actual reasons are different than they were before. Strictly speaking it becomes more of a guild imperative to protect their investments than it was before.

In fact, there were call-outs and actual defensive actions to protect camps during reset due to trying to keep the Dune rollers. That’s not something we’ve seen in a long time.

You’ll learn the new BL maps while everyone else is. How to build more dragon banners?

in WvW

Posted by: Downwood.3192

Downwood.3192

Correct. For any guild Improvement or Tactic that you slot you get one use for free. From then on you have to have a scribe build another one, then send it through your resonator to build it. Chilling Fog requires a level 150 scribe to make more. I’m unsure as to Dragon Banner as we’ve not yet gotten around to unlocking that one yet.

Once the item is done in the resonator (you can speed it up for 100 resonance per hour) you can then find it again in your guild storage.

After being slotted, any of the items will stick around until the objective is lost, or the weekly reset. You can use tactics over and over based on their recharge rate (usually 15 minutes) and improvement simply are always-on.

  • Describe a typical hour for you in the Alpine Borderlands in the past. For example, What size of group were you running in? What kind of tasks did you run? What activities did you do?

I generally ran in a group of 30-50, though on occasion I would sometimes run in smaller 5-10 man havok. We did everything from major zergball fights to 4-man stealth captures of keeps. I ran yaks, I upgraded objectives, I sentried objectives. I’ve several thousand hours in WvW and have done pretty much everything at this point in all sizes of groups.

  • Compare your experience described above with a typical hour spent in Eternal Battlegrounds, if you went there at all. Does your style of play change between the 2 maps?

My style of play is more or less identical on all maps.

  • Compare your experiences described above with an hour spent in the new borderlands.

I have actually done more solo work in the new BLs than I ever did in the old. Part of this is due to new profession masteries making it possible to have a higher sustain and survivability than I had before. That being said, I’ve also spent time solo roaming to learn the new map.

  • Describe the nature of combat in the borderlands in the past. How have the new borderlands impacted this paradigm for you? What style or build changes might it cause? For example, knocking people off cliffs or into lava might play a more important role.

There is significantly more emphasis put on direct confrontation and less on long-distance siege activity. With the inability to bunker in a tower while trebbing a wall down, the more direct confrontations are significantly more interesting than previously.

  • In your experience, compare the time it takes take a structure or objective here, then it did in the past.

More or less the same.

  • How is the loot and wxp for you compared to in the past? Will it be able to sustain whatever you are doing? Did it take a hit, or was it improved? If you are planning to unlock an elite specialization, do you think you were helped or hurt in these regards? Do you think you could pursue any other in-game goals just by playing WvW?

I maxed any functional use for wxp many moons ago. With no further wvw masteries, wxp is pointless and the rate is irrelevant. The loot drops need to be fixed. The removal of the level 80 centaurs and no replacement for their unique drop was an unacceptable oversight, especially given that three WvW upgrades to the guild hall require the heavy supply bag.

Guild hall upgrades which are required to advance a guild’s ability to play in WvW need to be able to be unlocked through WvW, not tied in to excessive PvE material. While most of the actual WvW upgrades can be unlocked through WvW oriented activities, there is still a major requirement for other non-wvw upgrades to be finished in order to properly and most efficiently progress towards WvW goals. These require massive outlay of non-WvW loot, drops, and currencies.

The inability to unlock any mastery points in WvW should be investigated.

  • How will the map change impact the long sessions (multiple hours) you spend in WvW?

It will not. Our standard raids last the same time no matter which map. In fact, BL raids are slightly less stressful.

  • In 100 words or less, describe how the new BLs could be improved.

Add centaurs back and make guild expansion loot requirements more available.

  • In 100 words or less, describe how the borderlands work to a new WvW player.

Can’t help you there.

  • In 100 words or less, describe how the borderlands work to a veteran WvW player that is new to the maps.

After having spent some time, not even much, learning the new maps, movement is nearly identical. We’re still learning proper siege placements, but that will come with time.

  • Which map am I most likely to find you currently, if you’re on Gw2?

I rotate between all of them but it’s easiest to get a dune roller motorcycle gang going on the BLs.

Right now as long as you have a guild that is capable of producing the high-end consumables for claimed objectives, the smaller guilds have a great thing they can do. For instance, if the main guild on the map claims the keep, but has the ability to produce speedy dolyaks and armored dolyaks, they can’t use those on the keep for obvious reasons. However, if a smaller guild claims a camp, which isn’t nearly so hard to upgrade their war room for, then the larger guild can slot their yak buffs into the camp claimed by the smaller guilds. By working together, the larger and the smaller guilds can achieve more than either could separately.

I think the claiming needs to be earned because of troll guilds claiming keeps with nothing however it still does not address the issue of a guild with no skills claiming and there be no way to remove the claim

No, they should not need claiming to be earned, however, if the guild claiming a camp, tower or Keep has no buffs or less running, then a guild with more buffs running should be able to take the claim over them. Just allowing for guilds to reclaim over others to highest amount of buffs would solve the problem.

i would pick yours over what we have currently but i am saying that was likely the idea behind making claiming something you earn.

These are actually not bad ideas. What we’ve seen so far is that the number of guilds who have keep claiming is currently low enough that they’re generally pretty good about working together to get things done and get buffs where they are needed, when they work. It also does help that the any guild can slot upgrades into an objective, regardless of who claimed it.

Here’s one of the tricks:

Large guilds and small have to work together. If the smaller guilds can get just camp claiming, once the timers have ticked down, the larger guilds with more materials and resources can place their tactics and improvements into objectives claimed by smaller guilds.

So, a larger guild can claim the keep, but in doing so, can’t claim a camp to be able to use their armored dolyaks and dune rollers. So, they have a smaller guild claim it so that then they can drop their camp improvements while still maintaining their claim on the main keep.

In fact, to be able to the ‘pack’ of dune rollers, this is required. You can only get one dune roller from a camp at a time. To be able to get a pack of six (the maximum) you’d need six guilds all working together. Once the timer ticks down (30 minutes of holding a camp) you can then slot the dune rollers. Any guild can slot them, as long as the camp has been claimed for 30 minutes. Not just held, claimed (it matters). Once you’ve done that, you wait 3 minutes, hit the lever and get your dune roller. Then the six rollers can all coverge for a photo op.

But, this requires six guilds that can all claim camps working together and at least one to have dune rollers to pull it off.

We’ve got Chilling Fog, Supply Drop, and Dune Rollers.

The supply drop is super useful.

The Chilling fog is a death sentence for golem rushes if there are cannons still active. Fortunately, we also have hardened siege, so the chances of them being still alive is actually pretty good.

The Dune Roller is amazing and awesome, try it!

The changes today ungated the scribing profession from the level 34 balloon upgrade so at least there is now valid scribing progression. It .is. expensive but so was ascended crafting when it first hit. I’m now at 275 and waiting on guild missions for slivers.

Well, with the changes today it got a lot easier. Expensive, but that’s normal for ‘first in line’ professions. We all remember how expensive ascended crafting was the first month or so. Right now I’m at 275 and waiting for weekly guild missions to build up our resonating sliver supply.

They will require 250 evergreen lodestones, 250 snowflakes, a resonating fragment, and a 12 bolts of damask.

I am going to make an assumption here and if I am wrong, well, will be happy to be wrong. But I believe that making these will be out of reach for the typical ten man or less per raid havoc guild. So these would be another part of wvw gameplay that will be put out of reach for havoc guilds or at a minimum at such a high degree of difficulty to accomplish that the majority of the havoc guilds will just not do it.

To put this in perspective, the above tactics cost more than an omega golem.

Entirely possible, right now the market cost for either available recipe is 4g 48s 84c which is, indeed, about twice what an omega runs on the market.

I agree that on the whole the new system is going to make it very difficult for smaller havoc guilds. Especially with crafting gated behind level 34 guild improvements for anything moderately useful like guild siege. What may end up happening is for smaller guilds to research some of the unlocks like guild arrow carts or whatnot and then provide the mats to higher level scribes from other guilds so they can come in and craft them. They’ll be automatically guild bound and deposited, just requires the trust that the scribe doesn’t run off with the mats.
