Bugged/ rigged stats in PvE?

Seems to me the game rigs the stats in PvE to make you follow the program . There is a constant feeeling of inadequacy that makes you feel you need better gear.

This is most obvious in group events. Whenever I try to attack a group event boss by myself, unloading all my skills on it , including elite skill, does zero damage. Is there some rule I am not aware of?

Minor enemies are invulnerable and regenerate health if you try to attack them while they are fleeing back to their orignal position. You get chased by some stupid thing, you run until it stops chasing , then you turn around to take it out, and it’s invulnerable until it gets back to its place.

I feel like a tool playing this game at times.

There seems to ba a lot of skills that don’t work as advertised, as is clear form the bugs sections here for the different professions.

Any cool/useful equipment around level 25?

When you hit level 35, you’ll have access to the explorable mode of the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon. If you can find a good regular group and learn the dungeon well (thus resulting in faster runs with fewer deaths),

GOOD LUCK WITH THAT! lol

Ignore that advice and enjoy the game, open the Trading Post window and set the filters to show you gear for your level only, and just buy the best you can afford. You have to actually go to a Trading Post to pick up the gear but you can buy and sell from anywhere.

Forget about dungeons unless you have a good team of people who can actually communicate.
They are either cheaply designed or are designed to be beaten with particular strategies and if your team doesn’t know or doesn’t tell you what to expect it’s a massive PITA , especially since if you quit before the dungeon is beaten the others get upset ‘cause they don’t get full rewards or some nonsense like that.

I’m afraid, I didn’t mean everyone else should be doing it too or are doing it, just pointed out that at least the guild I’m in doesn’t feel like there’s no need to communicate together and have fun.

I love the way I am free to do what I want and it has been my choice to do things with other people and sometimes without other people. I don’t see why it has to necessarily be your guild or your friends when you want to do something with other people; Ask around in Map Chat, look around while doing a heart or an event. Say hello to people when entering an area. Those are things you don’t have to do but you can if you want to create more communication with the people around you. I’m not sure why people feel like the game punishes for doing stuff together with others, but I think I’ll have to find out and ask other people about it, because this entire thread made me really interested in it.

I don’t think you should need group quests in order to feel like you can be nice to others and play with them.

Your guild sounds fun! In my experience the majority of players in PvE are rushing through trying to level and get skills ASAP , or are level 80s farming . Most people don’t stop for a chat , about half of them may respond to a hello.

Its not the game’s fault, its just how us gamers are , overall.
Not exactly the most sociable crowd.

It’s my first MMO so I’m fascinated and want to talk to everyone, but most players seem to be there for the action rather than the socializing.
Organizing raids with random people is impossible.

I think people just always want more . I found my first run in the Ascalonian Catacombs very interesting in that you really need to think about what you’re doing to get through. It didn’t look to me you could get through that without player skill. ( I was being led by experienced players)

Granted, I could barely see the bosses or what they were doing because of the amount of stuff being thrown at them , and I often didn’t see what hit me. But the low penalty for dying makes all of this fun and inviting rather than , frustrating.

I really like the low penalty for dying – I guess you also get less rewards from a group fight if you die, for less contribution.

I don’t want a game like Dark Souls where you really have to read a strategy guide if you want to beat the game in a reasonable timeframe (this lifetime)

There seem to be gameplay mechanics that come into effect only within a group, like different professions can combine skils. Eg if someone makes a fire circle, my ranger can stand inside it and use the spinning dual wield skill to shoot fireballs in all directions.

There are things like medical kits that turn your character into a purely support team mmber running around dropping potions for other players to use.

Several skills are made for use in a group situation, and offer comparatively little benefit when soloing. It’s an open world game so people have to be inventive rather than just farm and spam the same attacks all the time.

It’s just a huge fantasy online playground, you’re lucky you got 400+ hours of fun out of it.

The existence of a cash store and the lack of a sub fee should be enough pointers at what we have here.

The game is a huge achievement anyway, it surpassed my expectations mostly, while disappointing by an occasional weird cheapness that doesn’t mesh with the high quality of the overall product. Things like near instant creature re-spawns and the existence of farming bots are unacceptable., and so are some of the quests.

I loved skyrim too, hell I still play it and yeah I have put about 400+ hours into it as well. If you compare them on RPG, story or gameplay merit Skyrim is going to come ahead in every regard.

The advantages of a game like guildwars2 is its more social, and it should be more addictive. However the main problem I can see with guildwars 2, is its loot is actually worse than Skyrim or any other game that has loot in it period, if you want people to become addicted to instant gratification there has to be gratification.

Socially this game is rather inept as well, not too surprising given its designed for “people who hate MMO’s” lol, which is rather silly since the main strength of an MMO is the community and capability for social activities, neither of which this game capitalizes on.

Let us not forget that even a beloved game like Skyrim has its treasure drop problems!
Many of the ‘special’ rewards were just junk – only good for selling. The ‘randomness’ of these games makes getting decent gear nearly impossible at times. 99% of the stuff I was finding was just hauled back to a vendor to sell so I could buy potions or other items. Almost all the time the stuff you found on your own was completely worthless.

The good thing about Skyrim was that the level restrictions on weapons were only on crafting them – and you had a fairly decent chance of finding weapons that wouldn’t normally drop at your level, and no restrictions on using them. On my second character I knew what to get as soon as possible, the Spellbreaker shield for example, which i could effectively use until the end of the game . The gear treadmill was a lot less pronounced.

I don’t have real life friends who play games online, and finding it fairly hard to team up with people unless I stand outside Ascalonian Catacombs.

Most people seem happy to solo or play with people they already know. I changed from EU Underworld server to a US server because the former felt really empty and there were non-english speaking players. So now i need to stay up late to catch the bulk of american players online.

I’ve come across some skill points (notably Blasted Moors ) that seem designed for a group raid that needs some strategic planning, extremely hard to take solo, because the darn things respawn very quickly…

I don’t see the incentive for ArenaNet to provide new content now, they have our money. Unless they made major changes to the game it isn’t likely to continue selling much, and major changes mean work which has to be paid for.
I guess they will focus on a new product.

I too am disappointed with the broken promise of no grinding, it seems to me ArenaNet tried to attract more customers from the WoW crowd, who want to grind.

I got the game for the co-op PvE but teaming up with people has been random and infrequent as the majority of players I see are high level, spending most of their time in the competitive modes.

The game’s levelling mechanics and limitations are too much focused on PvP and WvW which impacts negatively on PvE , and perhaps some of the reverse is also true.

Anybody else noticed this?

I’ve come across this in several places. I haven’t played other MMOs and i don’t think I’ve seen this in a “serious” 3D game since Duke Nukem.
The only refinement here is that usually the enemies respawn behind you so that you don’t see them materializing out of nothing- but not always .

This seems to me a design choice to acccomodate farming, which this game is supposedly not about.

In these places you don’t get the satisfaction of having cleared the area, and it gets really annoying in enclosed spaces when you find yourself surrounded and have to fight the same stuff again to get out. At times there isn’t even time to look at the loot as all enemies come back for a second round. When those enemies are things like Ghost Cannons, things get really annoying.

Could they not wait 5-10 minutes before re-spawning?

I’m a lifelong Mac user and used to think like you : " I don’t want to use Windows".

Well, I eventually got bored of the lack of games on the Mac, and installed Windows XP on a partition and was very happy with it. I’m basically getting double value out of my machine. So long as you use a 3rd party firewall and avoid invasive anti-virus software it’s really ok. The Mac is actually faster on Windows for certain things, notably web flash video.

There’s a briliant Mac app called Winclone which allows you to quickly clone and restore entire Windows partitions (much faster and more reliable than windows recovery!) so that once you’ve installed Windows and applied updates you can clone and just wipe and restore if anything goes bad.

Mac uses Open GL for graphics which for some reason is inferior to DirectX for games.

Put all the dialogue in real time using speech bubbles. Make sure dialogue can be skipped after having been played once. Don’t spend money on voice-overs unless they’re actually GOOD.

Here, I just gave you an idea so obvious, it’s obviously brilliant.

Really ArenaNet, you disappoint me….

Since paying for the game gives you both versions this is my suggestion to Mac users: forget about this, buy Windows 7 and set up a Windows 7 partition on your Mac (using Bootcamp utility) to experience this game properly and at the full potential of your machine. You also get compatibility with the gigantic Windows games library as a bonus!

I have done exactly that to play games on the Mac. GW2 is running smooth as butter on Windows, with zero freezes or glitches. The only issue is a rare crash to desktop when entering a portal, but jumping back in the game takes less than a minute .

Well, the idea is for a player going solo to be able to explore an area without every single fight becoming a major encounter. There’s something no right about having to hit a bat with 20 arrows to kill it. I want these minor fights to be over as soon as possible as I’m usually heading for a skill point or a vista or just randomly exploring .

Skills could level up as you use them , up to a point of course. If you get no skill increase from repeating the same activity there would be no grind.

Personal story quests award weapons & armor that you can buy for not much money from the TP- or you can get gear with the same or better stats form the TP.

I understand that there are people out there that have lost their lives to things like WoW. That kind of grinding isn’t gaming as far as I’m concerned, but something else.

This is unlikely to happen but one can dream of a future game…
I want more of an action adventure PvE MMO in a world as big and fantastic as Tyria.

Roleplaying is great , but micromanaging items for hours seriously drags me down. Having to replace every bit of gear every time I level up, and re-apply appropriate upgrades to each is a serious problem. Running back and forth from my bank to trading post and crafting station destroys my appetite for adventure. This is too much busywork.
Having tons of different items with slightly different stats doesn’t equate to depth , for me, its’ an unnecessary case of boxes within boxes within boxes . When the items all just have generic icons to represent them, then I see no fun in all the loot management.

I wish there would be a game mode where ugrades were simplified or even automated. Got level up? Gear upgraded if you have the gold, with just a simple menu where you choose what stats you want to boost in your gear .

Skills could even level up the more you use them , this is something I really liked in other RPGs, especially when new abilities become instantly available when you level up, even in the middle of combat. You really get a feel of your character getting more powerful or capable…

I may be missing something but this is what I have to do if I want to continue pushing my way through areas that match my level: I have to replace every single piece of gear every time I gain a level up or two, if i want to be near the maximum possible damage & protection for my level. The process for doing so takes too long , and probably even longer if i was crafting the gear, rather than just buying it.

Grinding in lower level areas for a while doesnt help, as I still have to replace my gear.
Entering a level 35 area at level 35 can be gruelling if you’re using level 20 gear.

I don’t get it.

I also don’t get the players who farm places for loot or just run around killing rabbits and whatever can be killed . Seems more like rota work than roleplay. It’s a game !
Players should get ZERO reward for killing the same thing over and over.

Seems like the farming is from players into PvP and/or WvW trying to get as much stuff as possible to get even more powerful gear so they have an edge in combat.

Whatever, it isn’t that much fun to see. The fact that many common enemies re-spawn almost immediately seems a design choice to facilitate farming. The competitive modes seem to have too much of an influence in how the PvE gameplay works out, at least until one hits maximum level.

Omg Anet most ppl want (whatever I want.) Ppl play gw2 (for my reasons!)

Dude, year after year we see evidence of people making plans for the new year that include real life partying with real people. Nobody sets up gw2 game stations in night clubs for those that want to go out, nobody broadcasts live gw2 streams on tv for those who stay and celebrate with friends and family at home.

It is a safer bet that parties, concerts, socializing, and alcohol will dominate the attention of most people during this time (including, I imagine, the staff at anet) I highly doubt that most people want hardcore gw2 events to conflict with their new year’s celebration. This is the main consideration behind the laid back and simplified in game event, as has been said many times before. It has nothing to do with rainbows and unicorns – just some very appreciated consideration for the player base on the part of the developers.

There will be plenty of other in game events that are full of shinies, so just try to enjoy the holiday

Actually I think I can speak for other players when I say that we get MORE time to play on holidays because of no work. Also, some (probably many) of us don’t have the social life or inclination to go out boozing and partying- we play video games instead.
