Yeah. I played mesmer and it’s become so easy. Thief is really in a sad state now.
this is wvw with buffs. and still only 10k? where is your 15k?
you know you don’t use signet of malice nor signet of blood in pvp / wvw?
you know you can just block, blind or port away and that thief from first video is dead (he has used all his utilities)?srsly?
My point is. when you have a class that can hit insane dmg when you cant even see them. that is broken. idk about you but im not gonna spam dodges just cause i think a thief maybe behind me. Like thief before (and i would argue still now) is just a gank class. they can unload so much dmg on you before you even see them just by using SR and talking up to you without you noticing. If backstab had a cast time and in mid cast the thief would come out of invis then fine. but no so the least they can do is making it so you can lock down that bs and actually fight. Thief has way to many escaps and ways to invis for people to be crying that going invis does not remove every condition.
what? you see them after the first hit. they are revealed for 4 seconds. when they place SR you know where they are for 4 seconds. you can see infiltrator arrow. you can see smoke field. you can pop signet, endure pain, obsidian flesh, use mesmer f4 to get no damage at all and thief can’t do anything against it

imo acro trait line is nerfed dead, it’s bad. i don’t recommend to use it. you don’t get might anymore from dodge.
lol , that engi reveal is pretty rough. 1vX/roaming just got really hard mode if there is a engi in the fight.
most engis (like myself) trait for steamlined kits over the stealth reveal trait for mobility so i don’t think it’s huge issue unless in a duel.
yeah, it’s very hard tho. just imagine being in the middle of the fight, getting random revealed proc and wondering why revealed is so long. thief needs to be extra careful now on d/p when seeing other engineers
I adamantly disagree. In my 3rd year of play, this is the first time I feel on a relatively even footing.
What needs to happen is the former burst/zerk classes that could destroy a Mesmer ( or Ele ) in seconds learn to have some defense.
I understand the sour grapes. Rangers, Warriors, Guardians and thieves prety much had the upper hand going into a fight with a Mesmer.
This led them to believe they were highly skilled. Now, they need to learn a new skill set and defense.
I will say what has been said to me on forums too many times to count;
LEARN TO PLAY
nah. mesmer is op. lots of invis, strong burst, etc.
acrobatic specialization is crap now
choking gas is very bad
less armor/health (?)
surprise shot less immob (?)
practiced tolerance “nerf”
withdrawn has higher cd and is slower
shadows embrace is kinda bad now, resulting in weakness to anything with immob and condi
engi can run lock on and ruin stealth now
dagger training is crap now
p/p nerfed (ricochet gone)
cloaked in shadows now gm trait
burning on cele ele shuts thief down (passive, sadly)
mesmer has good counters against thief too (passive)
anything i forgot?
(edited by FlawlezZ.3178)
I dont mean to start a flame war but i actually like this change, because now thiefs cant just be super kitteny and go invis and reset the fight like 10 times when things get bad. having it so that conditions dont immediately go away once they go invis means that a thief needs to actually work for the kill and is not stuck being just a gank/face roll class.
Making it so that immobilize does not disable you means that you need to be good and dodge skills. Everyone keeps on saying that a thiefs greatest tool is there mobility. THERE SHOULD BE COUNTER PLAY. END OF STORY.All other classes have some counter play mechanic. But before the patch thiefs basically had none, they had way to much mobility and dmg for squishier classes to deal with.
Another thing, I see lots of people saying its not fair Mesmer cans stealth longer? I would agree in some sense BUT at the same time not. The reason i would not agree is that right now because of trait change, every class has roughly -200 armor compared to what they had before. Meaning light classes such as Mesmer need something to compensate for that. When a thief could 1 hit killed a mesmer using d/d (pre patch) thats a problem like you cant have a class that can kill 2 other classes in one hit, there needs to be a balance and right now what they have done is a step in the right direction.
I would like to seems more high skilled player playign s/d thief instead of relying on invisibility, and because of this i am very much looking forward to invisibility revealing skills other classes are going to get because then ill finally be able to see more s/d thiefs that take more skill then the scrub d/p thief i see time and time again.
Huh? The stealth was OUR counter-play mechanic for other classes. It just so happen to be all-encompassing in our condition removal and defense. If you go to nerf one, all the others suffer (which is exactly what just happened here). A mesmer, who’s entire class mechanic isn’t revolved around being sneaky or stealthy, can out-stealth a class who is and that poses a problem. Also, it annoys me when people associate d/p weapon set with thieves that don’t know how to play the class. I love d/p because of the utility it provides me. Player skill determines player skill, not the weapon set.
This is true but to say wep sets dont make certain things easier would be a lie. s/d is alot harder than d/p and i respect thieves that not just go stealth and reset the fight 600 times its annoying and uncalled for. plus there highest burst is when they are invis. imagine if kill shot warrior could go invis and still do its 15k dmg that would be op. But thief does it and naw man its balance. #doublestandardsareOP
this is a blatant lie. thief can not do 15k dmg … it’s more like 6-7k max in normal gameplay
why is it 2 sec instead of normal 4 sec ?
anet done nothing u killed 2 gold opponents ..
that guy was ranger so it means they were both noobs
it’s a good thing. p/p is stupid and kitten it doesn’t need to occupy a trait slot which can be used better
How exactly is it’s anets fault that your team decides to go afk when they’re close to a win ?
It’s their fault that this problem exist. If PvP wasn’t so bad, you wouldn’t have to wait 8 minutes. So when someone goes afk in your game, after you wait 8 minutes, it’s very exhausting. Now you have to wait another 3-5 minutes for match to end and another 8 minutes, if you go for a second match.
If Anet allowed to forfeit, like it was possible in GW1, you wouldn’t have to wait 3-5 minutes and could start a new game right after someone left. This would mean there are more people for every match (because no one being stuck in an already lost match), thus reducing the time you have to wait for a match.
If there was a forfeit function, I wouldn’t have a problem with AFK’ers and leavers.
thief should get some buffs considering how easy engineer and guard can counter thief. thief has to be able to do something against the blocks . dont nerf thief
thief is not op and stealth is not op. you can’t even cap and do damage while being stealthed.
i dont get this what’s their problem. alt accounting is OK.

So I played a bit with 2 friends and basically won 3 or 4 matches in a row. Now a couple of days later I decided to do some PvP matches again and now I lost 8-10 matches in a row.
How is that possible?
You got carried by your 2-3 friends. Won a lot. Your MatchMakingRating (MMR) got heavily inflated. Then when you yoloq alone, you are out of your league and drag your team down to lose 8-10 in a row.
Alternatively, u might have gotten lucky/unlucky.
No. Yes. Idk. No.
Read my post and stop writing trash.
K, ur just bad then to lose 10 straight. Only explanation is few people playing or no one in your league Qing at the time u did
8-10. And nope it’s statistically highly unlikely that if i was bad i was the only bad in every match.

All you say is valid, but not for such a streak. Also when I had that streak I had most times at least one mesmer and at least one thief or both in the enemy team.
So I played a bit with 2 friends and basically won 3 or 4 matches in a row. Now a couple of days later I decided to do some PvP matches again and now I lost 8-10 matches in a row.
How is that possible? I’m definitely not the worst player of every match, but why do I lose so often? Why does the game give me 75% noobs in my team (Very often no guild, crappy build etc.)?
You might argue that the problem is that i’m so bad, but out of 10 matches it’s very likely that there is at least one person (and much more) that is at my skill level and it would balance the team. So I should not lose so often.
I’ve got a feeling this has something to do with the new MMR system which tries to keep you at 50%. If this is true this essentially destroys Solo PVP because you know after a win your loss is certain, because you will be mixed up with noobs. Also when you have a good premade team and win against 90% of the opponents you will lose the next matches in solo q to lower your w/l ratio ?
I watched a stream of The Lord Helseth (best player in the game) who kept losing because his team mates were so bad. is that related ?
Tl;dr what’s the reason of my loss streak? why do I get mixed up with so much noobs?
how do I avoid this? am i right with my assumption it’s the mmr systems fault? what do you think of this system?
I don’t know what you’re trying to teach me, I’m just saying the guy has a point.
I was just trying to say that it’s useless to think about people not respecting the LFG because it will not happen.
The stuff after the first sentence was not directly meant to you, but just an example how player respect each other. Sorry, maybe it was too late and I should’ve made myself clearer.
@oxtred
You know that’s not gonna happen? This is a problem with GW2 in general, people just don’t have respect for each other.
I could complain about people playing kittenty classes in open world (basically any class that is not elementalist), using gear which is not zerk and not using the appropriate meta build.
Or people joining a dungeon group when they are clearly not wanted and don’t meet the requirements.
But I don’t do it because it’s useless and there is nothing to be done about it. That’s just how people are. Makes me angry when breach fails yet another time (also vinewrath), but well it’s impossible to teach a chicken how to fly.
Kick the guys who want to skip when you explicitly say that it shouldn’t be done.
Reward is also subjective just saying.
Are you saying that someone prefers mob loot above the dungeon reward or champion bags? By the time you kill all mobs, you can farm a lot of champ bags at SW. The reward is much much better.
Both sides have their reasons
This is invalid. There is no objective reason to waste time on killing mobs, which give no reward.
thief is crap for zergs … you can use the normal sa build for killing staff eles etc.
What about p/d condi? Is it so bad cheesy?
no damage
shoutbow meta
no dire amulet
cant capture point while invisible
can be easily dodged
no burst
no aoe
…
That, along with the fact that even despite the continous nerfs, really good players are still pretty much in godmode on those classes, makes it seem as if any nerf to those classes is completely acceptable.
What? Look at Sizer. He might win most 1 vs 1’s but takes so long and has to retreat so often that he would lose every point and can’t capture one either.
They added that wall in the last patch already.
It didn’t change anything there tho
500-600 mb
15 size
With the increased downscaling lots of damage was lost. Do you guys think this requires a record reset for lower level dungeons?
Of course. How do you think there could ever be someone beating a record after that massive nerf?
2-3 matches
An Error Prevented Saving:
Message Body length must at least be 15.
also less damage
auto attack is terrible
no heartseeker and back stab
Aww so many scrub thieves crying, you can actually push 2 buttons not just autoattack and you might win against other scrub
Thieves are most OP class in 1 vs 1 these days.
obvious troll
play elementalist or warrior (phalanx strength) if you want might. guard is bad at it ..
use steal either when they are using their heal skill (only if they’re going to die soon after that like 50%) or when he’s using rapid fire and you don’t have anything else
try to keep close to him & pressure him
start with your infiltrator strike on a place where you can retreat from his arrows
move around him so he has a harder time positioning
dodge when you’re on his way to him
i’m playing d/p so I thought what I would do if i was playing s/d. maybe its wrong dont knwo
s/p signet of malice
d/d hide in shadows
in open world pve where you are not running through everything i would use withdraw
am i wrong when i say this build is absolutely garbage? (in random pvp with no communication)
- no damage
- shoutbow warrior is better?
-> better condi cleanse
-> battle standard can rezz dead people
-> makes much more damage
-> isn’t considerably worse at holding a point than bunker guard
-> better swiftness also gives vigor
-> can move much better from point to point
-> has fire field to support party members with might, much better than the short empowerment imo
-> also gives fury and heals (better?)
- bunker is dead weight on points you are fighting at which don’t belong to you
- no burst
cele ele and cele rifle engi can also hold a point while making much more damage, also have good sustain, they can escape when the point is going to be lost (sb warrior too). bunker guard has to respawn
also: why do people such kitten hp monks use bunker guard?
I want rifle so I can be a true thief/robber:
burst in to jewelry store “Alright put you hands up this is a hold up, just gimme your jewels and no one gets shot!”
what?
a true thief / robber will use a pistol. clearly because it’s so small and it has the same effect. you can’t walk through town with a rifle on your back.
i’d rather like an axe on thief and no i dont think so ranger already gets staff
ranger shoots me even though he can’t possibly know where i move when i go into stealth wtf ?
:( that’s devastating to hear. even a low hp engi is hard to burst when he still has his block and the others aren’t chasing him
what can I do against him? i feel kind of useless against one … i can’t make enough damage until he’s got his heal skill up again (knockback, cc, block etc.)
So what else than stealth? You can easily drain a thiefs initiative pool and kill him then. Especially certain classes …
How can I fight an engi or guardian with S/D, D/P or S/P?
d/d is useless only single target, cleave is more effective .. i’m not talking about pvp and not about burst.. you can’t even properly burst someone in pvp or wvw alone (especially a warrior)
warrior doesn’t need stealth and warrior has better regen. where do you even need stealth in pve apart from skipping dungeon parts which can mostly be done without easily?

Ah yes, I have discovered your problem. You’re running only signets, so you have no real utility in most fights, especially in WvW. Try running at least Shadow Refuge and Shadow Step. This allows for a mistake or two on your part and gives you the ability to recover.
You’re losing so kitten thief because you’re trying to play thief like it’s a full signet warrior. That won’t work, sorry. Also, your precision is too high for for a D/D build. Way too high. You don’t need more than 40%. You should be be traited 6 deep in critical strikes and running the hidden killer trait. Your burst comes from backstab, and it will have a 100% crit rate with that trait.
Try mixing in some valkyrie pieces of armor and trinkets for some extra health. This will remove some of your excess precision, while keeping your power and ferocity the same. Although your armor is a bit lacking as well, especially for WvW. Are you invested in the Shadow Arts trait line at all? Because on a standard D/D build you’re going to generally want to be 6 deep in that line as well, taking Shadow’s Embrace, Cloaked in Shadow, and Shadow’s Rejuvenation.
But if this about PvE only…
Then you just need to kinda… get better? Idk how to say that without sounding rude, especially on this forum. But yeah.. PvE is pretty easy. I use my thief in lvl 50 fractals, so idk what kind of issues you could possibly be having with yours in open world content…
I don’t have any issues and you did understand it right: I’m running the signets for the open world. On this topic i’m majorly referring to single PvE content. What exactly is more useful than the signets? Even in dungeons you will often run two signets.
The only issue I have is, that i’m kinda frustrated about thief being redundant. Don’t tell me I’m bad, that’s not my point (I’d be too stupid to play my class). But I’m very pleased, since this change is upcoming:
“Dagger Strike/Wild Strike/Lotus Strike now hits up to 2 targets. Previous it only hit 1 target and became difficult for targets with pets etc. The defensive measures on these skills such as endurance gain from Wild Strike will only apply once. "
(And greatsword is being slightly nerfed)
I’m very interested how this possibly changes the things I mentioned. Definitely makes thief more versatile and more fun, at least in single PvE.
And to William Bradley. Indeed DPS from thief is higher, but this only goes for dungeons (PvE) and warrior brings a lot more support in dungeons. Maybe one day thief will get a +150 buff to group members like ranger, guardian and warrior do.
(edited by FlawlezZ.3178)
It’s about the class itself. Every class should have a point where it’s superior to other classes. Thief doesn’t.
If you want to talk about group play, I can also tell you that thief isn’t that good either. Warrior has more to bring in (kitten even +150 power for every group member AND even BANNERS, kitten ).
Invisibility is only necessary when you want to make your run as fast as possible and is only useful at few places (Caudecus maybe?).
Blind can’t be applied to most mobs and especially not there, where thief is the most effective: bosses.
What else, did I miss something? Maybe you have to have much more knowledge about thief and skill, as if you were a warrior? Normally, someone would assume that if something is harder, it’s more rewarding, but that isn’t the case here.
Warrior vs Thief
Higher hp
better armor
same damage
Lol
It’s indeed useful for blinding at TA and at a certain Fractal. It’s not really necessary.(maybe higher fractal levels, I didn’t do that repetitive unrewarding fractal thing, so I don’t have much experience about that topic)
I don’t really understand the game? How should I understand it? What do I exactly do not understand?
“Warrior is indeed overall very good on their own, but this is not the game all about?”
I know that the game is not all about warrior, but what do you want to tell me with that? This topic is about class comparison between warrior and thief: How warrior is superior to thief in any place, except for speedclears (one thief is enough though).
I also don’t understand what you mean with “does that mean they (warrior) are the best?”.
I’m specifically talking about thief and warrior. What’s your problem, scurb?
How often do I have to mention that this topic is neither about wvw, pvp nor group dungeon play?
Can’t you find a single argument on how thief is in at least one aspect better than warrior in (open world) single gameplay?
I can’t; thief is redundant. trololol. dumb anet can’t properly design their classes!
This post is so ridiculous.
You’re comparing a Thief to a Warrior and the worse thing you can say about them is that “They’re boring”. Saying that S/P is not fun because you can’t move while using its strongest attack? HELLO? Have you even played warrior before?
sorry, I mean ONLY attack (except auto attack). warrior has useful whirl skill, throw weapon for some range dmg while running to the enemy, nice moving skill with stun and 100b
yup @nagr.1593 thief is pretty redundant and the only useful support skills are only useful at dungeons (pve), except pvp warrior really outplays thief.
i wish thief had more advantages and wouldn’t have been nerfed so bad. i guess if it wasn’t thief would be more rewarding. the thing with 1-2 useful skills on a set is really a pity. i only got to know of this enlightenment after not playing the game for months, mhh
(edited by FlawlezZ.3178)
i had a break and didn’t play gw2 for a long time. before that I didn’t play open world, just dungeons, pvp and wvw roaming, so I didn’t see that warrior is superior to thief in every aspect in open world ..
thief is super static that’s a pity it should be a fun rewarding gameplay, but in comparison i think thief is weak. it’s also more static than a warrior if you want to play s/p.
is there anything where thief is overall better than warrior in open world? except dieing easier (as geiir mentioned) :P
d/d is useless only single target, cleave is more effective .. i’m not talking about pvp and not about burst.. you can’t even properly burst someone in pvp or wvw alone (especially a warrior)
