[PvE] Revising the "DPS Meta"

in Profession Balance

Gambit.8425

There are 2 different topics discussed in the same thread.

1) Some people are talking about a change to the core mechanic of the game not to have the trinity. They want trinity, they want the combat built around that and the dungeons mechanics built around that. It goes against the manifesto, but hey, we can discuss about that.

2) Some people would like to do the same dps as glass cannons while sitting in bunker builds/equipments. Sorry folks, if you want to do the best damage you have to run zerker and take all the risks. You can give up a lil and go with the zerker/cavalier/knight mix that suits you best. Still getting beaten by the game? Run your soldier gear and hopefully the group will carry you through the contents.

Only problem here is the condition branch of the dps.

This reminds me of all those LFG-starters that consist of 2 non-heavies, most likely as you described, who ask for 3 zerk warriors in caps. Probably ready on the kick-button if someone isn’t up to snuff. Always give me a good laugh as I have all 8 classes geared and know how few PUGs outside Warriors that actually spec or at least make an effort to do damage, for dungeons.

New Player afraid to join dungeons

Few tips:

Run Storymode first, to unlock ex. mode so you’re always able to start an instance yourself if you want to and to get a feel of what each dungeon brings in exp. mode in terms of encounters, mobs etc.

If you’re planning on ever playing WvW, build a PVT, Knight, Cleric set first. Start with it in exp. modes to get accostumed to the different dungeons. 90% of the players already use it anyway despite all the (rightfully so) zerk-propaganda on this forum. Join path 1 groups without the “speed” or “experienced” in them, path 1’s are most of the time the easiest and quickest to do. You could watch a Youtube-video beforehand to know what to expect. Cause that’s all ex. mode really is; running from one memorized boss event to the next that are played the exact same way every time.

A fix to the condition cap would go a long way.

Many players already bring their PVT/Cleric/All Signet stuff to dungeons and do just fine, it just take them twice as long as pure damage groups. Isn’t that the tradeoff you do for being lazy and only carrying one set of armor among the excess of different stats available? Same goes the other way of course. Especially in high-level Fractals where full-zerk players who can’t handle it become a burden.

Based on previous experiences though, it will be fun to watch the flood of tears from asc. zerk armor crafters who just spent all that gold when Celestial become the new meta. Because all those 20? different gear combinations in Anets infinite wisdom become unimportant outside WvW.

You could try a freeware program called CleanMem (Google it). It frees up memory every 15 minutes through task manager and has been my cure-all over the years for games that doesn’t handle memory too well.

Without it I would also crash at times in WvW zergs on highest settings despite having W64-bit, 8 GB, SSD etc.

Scarlet too is like a carbon copy of Helena Bonham Carter and her roles the last 10 years.

My biggest grief is how LS just gets less content each time and nerfs to the rewards. The instances pay out what a single champ does in Frostforge Gorge, same with the kittenty Tri-color chest. The mobs in the labyrinth doesn’t scale and are worthless to farm for loot, even with 100’s of MF. And to clowns that say LS isn’t about the shinies, how come every LS with zerg-farm lately been abandoned as soon as the achievements are done. Players simply want rewards for the time they put in or they will skip it. Personally, I can’t even get the amount of Pristine Toxic Spore Samples I want for the recipes, because the train for Toxic events in KH stopped after a few days.

Engineer was the second easiest to level for me, after Guardian.

At low levels I’d go dual pistols, fire and bloodlust sigils, all into power and precision for gear and traits, Flamethrower and Thumper turret and literally burn foes to dust. A bit boring maybe, but I could solo champs with that just as good as any other class.

How current Kessex Hills is for a lv27 I dunno though.

LS map events less and less rewards?

in Tower of Nightmares

Posted by: Gambit.8425

Gambit.8425

Yup, and what happened to scaling? It’s pretty pathetic to see everyone spamming attacks in the air in hopes of getting a hit on the normal mobs that pop up and die in 1 second. Therefor also this side of the game now cater to Warriors and Guardians with their fast cleaves. It’s just getting more silly each LS, and the change (neeeerf) to loot and account-bound MF to somehow make up for it (haha) make me feel like a lab rat when GW2’s exploring new low limits for what the players can endure.

When many players find PvE mobs down-state as something positive in this patch, “cause it make them able to sometimes tag a mob”, instead of like scale to Champion like it used to for a short while, I know we haven’t seen the worst yet.

Champion train in Queensdale is the best way to do that achievement, at least it was yesterday. Troll, Oak and Boar often spawn with the toxic, the rest not so much, but you make a lap fast enough that it doesn’t feel too grindy.

When and how the buff appear seem totally random, some champ spawns never get it while the next spawn do, sometimes when the zerg has beaten it to 20% health.

Scepter/Shield with this build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fUAQJArelUgiCXFyvDf4ES2jVCBTQsHYE81RXFoIA-jwwAEFAiAYltIasA-e

Shield #5 to push adds away from crystals in p1. The many stability durations means you don’t have to worry about orb pulls and all the retaliation helps a lot with getting her hp bar down. You can face tank her without having to worry about cripple, if all shouts are on cd use virtue of resolve or virtue of courage to remove it. Keep virtue of justice active on her. Scepter #3 followed by #2 deal massive damage to her and lock her in place temporarily. Nuke hard with SY up because of the damage bonus with boons.

Walk in a circle described in the picture below. Standing about were the circle is drawn means the camera won’t be that disturbing and you don’t have to move much for the next gap to stand in, run there asap when it’s shown. AoE in 2nd phase looks like a hour-glass alternating between horizontal and vertical direction. I find counter-clockwise walking like in the picture to be better for the flow of it all (spawns, orbs, camera).

Critial Diff between Challenging & Punishing

in Queen's Jubilee

Gambit.8425

The things you don’t like add to the mental frustration thus making QG “more challenging” for a helluva lot of people by looking at this forum. WP cost 1s? if you dont get a rez. And I at least have plenty of those repair canisters from the AP chests.

And what was the learning curve in Southsun Survival other then run away early and gather passion fruits, scavenge a remote location and then prey on the hungry? Which of most seemed to be there only to finish the games played achievement. Also without our chosen professions, traits, armor and weapons like all the other previous mini-games.

I personally skipped the score achievement. Not because I was bad, but I just found it too boring to waste that much time doing it. There’s AP I will never get, but I didn’t come here crying about it. I thought the wait between rounds and the intro in SC survival worse than queue’s in QG. Clearly ANET can’t cater everything for everyone, and what some find fun others don’t.

I agree that some mechanics in QG like the constant cripple if you don’t time the dodge right and the jerky camera isn’t much fun, but seriously, the thing is easy to complete. Literally everything has already been done and documented, all you have to do is invest a few minutes in a guide so you can follow it the exact same way. If you are good at SC survival this should be cakewalk. Players>Mechanics, every time.

The more posts I read here, the more I believe ANET put the bar just right with the gauntlet. It’s not meant to be done by the “casuals” that doesn’t put any effort in finding a suitable build or armor other than with MF. Now that I think of it, all the moaners here are probably the same people everyone dread to have in their dungeon pug. Hopefully some of them will improve after this experience.

This isn’t hard nor good content, it’s repeating every step of unknown events (or study guides) until you can do it in your sleep. Maybe frustrating is the right word for it. I didn’t feel any sense of achievement for completing QG, more than that I now can leave it behind. It’s based on cheap mechanics to shut you down and certain professions/builds just have it a lot easier providing the necessary tools to avoid it.

In most videos posted of Liadri, players seem to run around randomly with lucky draws on evades or running clockwise around the circle. This is BAD for beginners! When you have completed it once, you can start doing more advanced luck based stuff if you want to try out the 8 crystal achievement, but first stick to the safe. Check the image below on how the AoE works once she’s chasing you, remain cool and keep moving to the next of the 4 gaps COUNTER-clockwise. It should make it much easier to finish.

Necros in WvW?

Gambit.8425

I too have played most professions in WvW, so I know baseless tears when I see them. For blob AoE/siege damage Elemental is still the undisputed king. If you bring a bunker to 1vs1 a Necro, yes you will have problems due to Necros debuffing abilities. It’s all down to your own spec. Necro have several hard counters like spike damage, stuns and condition removable builds like an Engineers. None of which you seem to bring in your own skirmish group. L2adapt to another viable threat on the playground.

Sorry but I think this is working exactly as intended. Bad players die good players prevail.

Sounds familiar?

Some of the claims here are just so over-the-top silly it’s embarrassing. Full berserker AoE Necros that doesn’t fall over if you sneeze on them? Yeah, right. Even a full rabid Necro can go down in seconds if caught off-guard or with cooldowns.

Boohoo, just another QQ’er mad cause he lost a free-kill on the battlefield.

I play all professions at level 80.

Then play your Necromancer if you honestly consider them too powerful. But I think you prefer something cheesy that already is and has been OP for the longest time; namely Support Guardian / DD Ele / Shatter Mesmer that I picked up from an older post by you.

The reason you won’t see Guardians use Soldier’s Runes is because their shouts, unlike Warrior shouts, are very situational.

  • Run your blob optimized support build and have others help you out against pesky Necromancers that yourself then picked as a nemesis.
  • Run something more selfish and laugh at Necromancers.
Your choice really. Shouts/Soldiers situational on a Guardian? /Facepalm

Just FYI. A Necromancer built for AoE has lesser fears and slow regen of Life Force, making it harder to pop into Death Shroud on demand. A Necromancer built with Life Force in mind, won’t have upgraded Marks. I.E. Balance.

It’s getting old that we can’t pick whatever body we want without having to consider floating weapons/backpacks. Sylvari has even more problems, at least the males with their balloon rump on coat armors. This game is so much about aesthetics, with all the customization, coloring, etc., so why does this “bug” even exist still?

Please make it a priority to correct body frames ASAP. I think most would rather have sheathed stuff too close than too far away from the body. And it’s one of those little things that would “please” a lot of players just like AoE looting did.

It’s easy to fall into a pattern where he interrupt your water while getting a free pass himself. But he’s pretty straightforward once you know how to break his routine.

The guide is good, here’s how I proceed to break the mentioned pattern. Start with a real drink, then two bluffs. Belch now and you will interrupt him. Keep bluffing until you either get interrupted, then use water for the last punished round, or until he start his special. Always take bluff if possible and save water and belch for when his buff is up. Don’t plan the belch around your own health, if he hasn’t drunk water for a few rounds, use it if you can.

Most bosses just stand there. When you know the mechanics of an encounter you have no problem doing a full 100b every 6½ seconds. I hit over 35k just from the last swing in an average PuG group (one other warrior) using the standard zerk build. GL attempting that on a Ranger.

I got nothing against Rangers, my first toon was one, but I noticed early on how something just didn’t add up when other professions around smacked mobs 2-3 times as fast while leveling. This feeling only escalated at 80 until I rerolled to something better (any other class).

I find staff (maybe S/D too, haven’t tried it yet) vastly superior in PvE post patch.

Yesterday questing with my then lv75 d/d (0-10-0-25-30) with lv75 blue zerk gear I activated one of those holograms. In two attempts I just couldn’t down all mobs fast enough before all my heal options were out. This was definitely a huge difference to how it played out pre-patch. Then I tried the staff I always been upgrading and carrying with me but never bothered with pre-patch. Killed them easy, with HP going down at least as fast as with d/d, but without being in any danger. Of course most d/d’s at lv80 use some toughness on their gear, but that would have just made the d/d trade a slower kill for survivability.

I guess d/d has been even more pigeonholed into WvW bunker roamer in this patch.

Server Match up is terrible

Ladder ranking is the only way to go:

Have third in first Tier move down, have first in last Tier move up. In every other Tier the winner move up and third goes down. No internal mumbo jumbo ranking calculating needed, just start with the current rankings and let it play itself out. Works fine in every other competitive game I’ve played and it is the most fair system too.

The current randomness destroy any feeling of server pride and goals of improving to the next level in WvW warfare. The only real sense of reward in WvW was lost for me by this kittened change. Why bother even trying when we probably get annihilated by a server 8 ranks higher next week, just like we were this week. Personal rank? Who cares.

But as I already stated some pages back, ANET has a plan for everything they do. Less WvW players=More event players=More cash shop buyers.

Why are you still doing WvW? Don’t you know you’re supposed to grind the latest achievements for this weeks event, and possibly get tempted to buy plenty of RNG boxes. I bet that’s what all those losing servers are doing, that have 1/2 or 1/3 of the population to the tier-leader, when they are bored of being stomped by the bigger blob.

Do you really think ANET does anything that they haven’t calculated inside and out to maximize the profit from the game?

I have to admit, tier6 looks like an unfortunate bug on ANETs part, but I’m sure it’s corrected in the near future to resemble the rest.

Gambit.8425

I’m pretty sure most have separate PvE and WvW characters, cause traits and gear usually differs anyway and some professions are better at one than the other. But if you really want one for everything I’d say Guardian. Above average at everything; PvE, WvW and tPvP, and you can basically use the same setup for the first two.

Elementalist would be my second choice or first if I preferred ranged combat, but they can just as well go melee with two daggers as you probably already know. Warrior and Thief would be my picks after that, simply because Warrior PvE DPS is ahead everyone else’s and Thief is hilariously OP in WvW.

Avoid Mesmer, Necromancer and Ranger or you’ll end up disappointed again.

Necromancers haven’t been nerfed or buffed, and they have a lot of bugs since release that Anet doesn’t fix. They are just sub-par at everything imho, Engineer is a better conditioner for example. Elementalists are still OP, all they did was tweak the DD spec a bit, and you have the option to go staff and be the best zerg badge hogger and siege demolisher out of all professions.

Players QQ’d for the longest time how easy it is to brute force a castle with a larger zerg. What they forgot to tell Anet was that they only wanted the gate to have like a 100% health increase, so it would take them twice as long to #1 bash it down.

Now Anet actually put some effort in their attempt to cater to the imbecile tear jerkers and made tactics a somewhat viable option in WvW. Of course that’s way too advanced for the average QQ’er who now cry over it instead, since Anet also were kind to finally nerf the Mesmer to the ground in this patch. When they nerf AC it’s probably back to thieves again.

Ascended Gear... none again?

Gambit.8425

LOL @ all you with the mindset from World of Warcrafts PvE vs PvP discussions.

You know why we haven’t seen any ascended gear in WvW yet? Because it’s a kittening drag to get in PvE and nobody would do Fractal anymore if we could get them in PvP. Why do you think the Fractal weapons skins have like a 0.001% probability to drop? Because it’s the only reason to go there once you have the rings that take less than two weeks to get, if you don’t RNG them earlier as a reward on daily chest.

Amulets and Earrings can already be earned from dailies inside WvW, guild activities are just that and cant be branded as “PvE”. Either do them or don’t.

Unlike WoW, PvE in GW2 is just a mindless grind (obnoxiously dull) to get the wanted gear for even more mindless WvW blobbing which is the considered end-game. TPvP is the equivalent to Arena in WoW, but in GW2 you can take a newly created character and be on the same level as someone who has played for months.

When I wrote roamers i meant all professions, players in general chasing the next POI on map. But you’re right, a Ranger NEED to be a duel spec to have a legit chance against most PvE roamers of equal skill. 3 wins of 5 to take OP’s example since he’s Mesmers #1 PvE spec.

If you’re a bunker spec and out-heal my damage while I’m a GC spec aimed for badge farming, I would do the only honorable thing and run away, but I’ve yet to see it happen in WvW, ever. But I find roaming slow, boring and avoid it, I ran into enemy zergs more often than alone players.

Shame on you for losing against a Ranger You should stay max range, GS 1200 y>Axe 900 y, spam clones and not give away the real you too obviously, let iZerk work its magic, use Blink to get away if chilled, try to time Feedback 10 sec after being chilled to reflect the next one, and use some T/V gear in WvW. If you get him down, press F4 after F when stomping to not get interrupted. Melee Rangers are a gimmick at best in WvW where all is centered around ZvsZ and roamers are mainly PvE’rs trying to complete map.

In PvE a Bow with Piercing arrows and Traps is the best you can get in damage/support from a ranger imo. Same in WvW to farm ranks/badges.

Scenario;

Completely random dungeon run with completely inexperienced team. 1 never been in this dungeon before and not on voice chat. only 2 people (me included has been in this dungeon more then once) No one was told before hand any tactics or what to do so its a very ad hoc run to simulate normal PUG dungeon running (as no one will find a omfg elite group all the time)

You will notice that all the times that the pet dies are actually times when its not being used. There is always a pet swap available (this is where permanent stowing is a good idea Dev’s).

There was one crash which made me miss the Lava part. (the game is very unstable on my Dell XPS) and the game returned to windows 3 times as the recording software stopped recording and automatically minimised the screen.

On boss fight, I was attempting to keep the aggro and hold the boss at the gate. Doesn’t look like it worked though as they may have fixed this and the boss kept teleporting away when it got close to the door.

The build was pure power and survival so no where near a GC. Armour was PVT with Runes of the noble (because I like loot and an extra dog)

Like I mentioned, it is not an amazing video. It is not meant to be an elite know the dungeon like the back of your hand run. This is a simulation of what it would actually be like for people to play on a standard level. You may say I am bad with the Ranger, you may say the team was bad in general. But how many % of the GW2 population is elite? not a lot.

Bring the pain

Just a few observations.

To me it seems that you try to make up for slacker behavior by bringing the spirits as “support”. Why no Healing Spring? Cause your job is to plinker away at max range? An Elite skill you pressed once in the whole instance? At least you use Barrage frequently, that’s more than i can say for the average LB pug Ranger.

The gear/traits you’re using make your single-target damage just a tad higher than what a AH Guardian does with his scepter, no joke. On Prison Warden, look at all those Might buffs you’re missing out on and you don’t even have a Warrior in the group.

In the bomb room when two of your mates are down and you finally gain some agro with your low sword swinging damage, you instantly drop to the ground. What was the tanky armor for again?

And then you top it off by calling shot-gun on the AFK boss, despite it’s obsession over the D/D Elemental who almost died being chased by it.

Honestly, the main impression was a Guardian, ironically the only one using 2 consumables, who had to work twice as hard to lead his guild mates through one of the easiest dungeons. Did you leave your own Guardian as main because it was too much responsibility?

Confusion kills bad and inattentive players. If anything confusion needs to be buffed in sPvP because it’s bloody useless there.

I play Mesmer, Warrior, Ranger, and Elementalist in WvW. Two of those classes have the worst condition clearing in the game, yet I rarely ever die to confusion. If you have confusion on you: clear it or walk away until it runs out; it’s not rocket science.

In a 1v1 situation, if you cannot clear confusion, just wait for the duration to run out. The mesmer is most likely wearing rabid gear which means he does kitten for damage outside of confusion and relies on you being an idiot and killing yourself.

In a zerg situation, the same strategy applies except you also have teammates around you to clear confusion for you.

BTW, I don’t run confusion specs on my mesmer anymore. I can already kill bad players, so I’d rather have half a chance at killing competent players with a power spec.

Agreed, Mesmer confusion does not need a nerf, instead buff it back to normal in PvP. Only bad Thieves ever die from it in my experience.

There is already way more Elementalists, Guardians, Thieves and Rangers running around in WvW. We need more diversity among the professions, not less. Like in PvP where Mesmer became a rarity after the nerf.

Try the above suggestion that was posted and soon buried among all the text in the Network Lag [Merged] thread. The lag is from Anet using a default port that is popular to throttle (limited bandwidth) by many ISP’s. By forcing GW2 to run on a standard TCP/HTTP port you bypass the throttling that no ISP would dare mess with without getting a massive amount of complaints from regular surfers.

I went from several seconds of skill lag to no lag at all with that little trick.

Came back after 6+ months, how are things?

@Kravick:
Thanks for setting the record straight, I feel exactly like you do with Necromancer in everything you have explained. I can’t understand people defending the current state this class is in, they can’t have tried other professions at the same level and gearing. I have used both berserker, rampage and rabid gear with different trait-setups and the damage and support are just mediocre compared to what the other classes bring to the table.

So many of our skills are focused around AoE bleeds, yet neither Death shroud nor Lich form benefit squat from stacking condition damage, making them literally useless with such a build other than delay certain death in DS case. Left is Plague which is a gimmick at best and Flesh golem which still are riddled with the same bugs since release. Worst elite skills out of all classes imo and a serious case of schizophrenia among the traits.

In WvW Necromancer is my least favorite to bring in both zergs and roaming. On paper the AoE might look good, but due to condition removers, the damage being done are just so much less than what other classes can dish out. At the end of a session even my support Guardian have more badges in the bags, which baffled me the first times it happened. Wall of Reflection turned out to be a better AoE damager than a fully AoE specced Necromancer using all his skills.

Until Anet get their kitten together and start focusing on correcting the game more than putting in off-tracked stuff like SAB, my Necromancer will continue to being shelved in every aspect of the game, along with my equally useless Ranger.

Well to avoid a flame war, I should refrain from calling you names and would like to point out that you will fail abysmally along with the other 4 terribad warriors (pure DPSers or you would call them) as I was not just “autoattacking” with scepter but spreading Epidemic and getting my golem to do its rush while switching to staff when the going gets tough. The problem with condi build Necros in that stage is that it takes far too long to AOE kill with conditions especially the one mob are you are spreading Epidemic from dies too quickly or has very few debuffs in the first place especially with a bad team.

In the first place, the warriors should be able to keep themselves alive even as pure DPSers while nuking everything, especially when u have 4 of them.

Sorry if I offended you. I suppose your post rubbed me the wrong way with your talk of “clueless players”, while you save the day with… Power and Wells… and " frantic Marking, dodging and kiting the mobs", which is kinda normal in a room full with waves of mobs if you have agro from them. Your group also managed to wipe despite your heroic deeds. It all just sounded like a player who’s used to being carried himself and are shocked to have to contribute for once. “Terribad” players wouldn’t have killed the Assassins in time and i doubt you soloed them.

That stage of CoF p2 is more of a gear check than anything, second a place where support come in handy if you lack it. Warriors doesn’t have much healing unless they spec for Vigorous Shouts, thus my term pure DPS. Maybe the mobs picked them off one after the other before they could rally. A condition Necro works perfectly fine to kite, while targeting and attacking the Assassins at the same time. I know cause I’ve done it myself several times in groups that aren’t capable of mushing all the mobs quickly. But then my Necro is of course geared in full exotic/asc rabid which makes everything easy. You had a smooth ride up to it because the rest is on a lower level of difficulty.

The reason why I dislike Wells so much is because of this games AoE limit to five targets in combination with their long cooldowns. Staff is ideal for the bomb room for groups like yours, with its constant health regen and frequent chills between dodges. Spectral Walk is often seen as a PvP skill, but is something that can act as a pause button to gain health and endurance in tight situations.

You have a future guardian in your signature. Do the right thing and level it up and make it your main for instances like I did. You can single-handedly turn the worst pug group into winners with your buffs/heals, dish out real damage and have fun at the same time.

Sounds like OP went from typical slacker auto-attacking scepter, to actually supporting his team. I have a Necromancer myself that I have played on and off since release, and one thing is for certain, they need to use their support to validate their existence cause the damage alone is sub-par to most classes.

In the Magg defense stage a Necromancer should try to maximize debuffs on mobs, spreading them as much as possible with Epidemic. Wells isn’t good at all, short duration, looong cooldowns. Sometimes I hear newbies say that staff for Necro sucks, damage wise sure, but the debuffs from a traited staff is perfect for places like the one you described. At least that’s how I play mine, and I always feel like I carry pure DPSers if you wanna call it that, but that’s part of the profession.

What about the bug that causes Flesh Golem to become idle and do nothing. Or my new personal favorite in this games standing joke profession: I tried Minions in sPvP and a Mesmer transformed me into a Moa, resulting in every pet despawning with full cooldowns. GG Anet.

I had the same thing happening with GeForce 310.90 drivers when they came out, kernel errors and even blue screens, that forced me to restart the computer. Great fun in the middle of an instance. Of course this only happened in GW2 too, nothing else had any problems with those drivers. I rolled back to GeForce 306.97 drivers, no uninstall or anything, just replaced them with an install and not another blue screen since then.
