What I’d ‘really’ like is proper way for me to change the ‘look’ of whatever armor I end up wearing ‘on the fly’, and I’m sad to not see anything about that in the long blog post.
They’re called Transmutation Crystals.
I think they’re saying that they like having multiple outfits. I also have multiple armors just for different looks. Transmutation stones don’t fix the problem, because if you have 2 or 3 coats you like and want to be able to switch them out, you don’t want to erase one with another one. One of the small pros of an mf set for people like us is that it gives you a valid reason to have multiple armor sets..and a time and place to switch it out. Like with an mf and a main set, I have two looks. And I wear my main set for dungeons and my mf set for farming. So I have a time and place to switch it up. But without mf, then suddenly an extra set is just..an extra set. Not to mention now you WOULD have to transmute it to get any decent stat combo. Plus I think they’re trying to say with upcoming ascended gear, and the gear treadmill, now we’d have to make ascendeds for each of our current sets so we can have the same looks, but best stats. Plus a possible NEW set for any cool new looks ascendeds offer.
It’s mainly a cosmetic type issue, but rendering an entire set of armor someone has useless has all sorts of consequences. And regardless of whether they’re about utility or vanity, everyone has every right to own what armor they want and not have it tampered with months after acquiring it.

I agree to some extent, however I think it’s inconsiderate of someone to join a group for Arah Explorable and they show up with a set of rare magic find gear, magic find sigils, and magic find food – rather than at least trying to be helpful.
But that’s not everyone..and that’s not everyone with mf armor. Some people are ALWAYS going to be inconsiderate regardless of the circumstances..So why are we taking away something from everyone? This is the kind of logic in a kindergarten classroom, one kid colors on the walls so nobody’s allowed to have crayons?
I’d like to hear more about Anet’s reasoning to removing MF from the game. I’ve played quite a few games with a similar stat, and like it. Yes, it is a trade-off to sacrifice other attributes in place of getting better loot, but it makes the game more challenging. I may be more squishy and do less damage, but I get better loot and it requires more skill on my part. I am also not sure how this will affect the economy long term. I suspect it will help to even out the wealth distribution slightly, but I would be surprised if this is anything more than minor.
Idk about evening out wealth distribution..I mean overall the richest players are still gonna be those who buy a ton of gems and convert them to gold, those that actively and successfully play the market, and those that farm a lot. I’m gonna guess that a lot of the people who don’t like the mf armor don’t spend as much time farming as people with whole mf sets. Or they’re the people who just don’t believe mf helps, in which case now they’ll be in the same boat as farmers who won’t have mf anymore.
So basically we’ll end up with the same sort of..heirarchy of wealth. Because I don’t see this getting people to spent less/more on gems for converting, deciding to play the market, or wanting to start farming a lot more than previously. I’m kind of worried about how it might affect prices of things on the tp though, and the ability of people who DO farm for money to keep getting money..
I’d love to hear their reasoning, too. Because so far all I can see is that it’s because of people whining about mf in dungeons or something. Which as I keep saying is a completely bs excuse. You run pugs knowing there’s a risk of them sucking. This is an elitist attitude, where do we draw the line? First mf, then mf food, then nobody without full exotics, only certain classes, etc. Does Anet want this to be a game full of everyone running the same class, build, etc? Just because one group of players is too lazy to either make their own mf sets OR is assuming everyone with mf is using it (and sucking) in dungeons, and they somehow are being forced to continue pugging with such people…Just because these people whine, why does the game get changed? If Anet was a parent trying to raise 5 kids, they would be the worst parents ever. Whiniest kid gets everything while other kids get screwed over? Seriously look at things for yourself and do what is actually best for the game.
And if for some reason, MF is actually bad for the game, you should have fixed it a year ago. Before you put out all this mf armor, gear, runes, food, etc for us to use. And encouraged us to use.
I got a Vial of Condensed Mists Essence from a second level Fractal run using Magic Find gear. I’ve gotten an exotic drop and plenty of rares in WvW where people complain about how unusual that is. I often get three rares from running The Frozen Maw, which takes as long as it’s going to take whether I’m in ‘Zerker gear or my Magic Find gear. Are ’Zerker stats going to help me do any of that better than I’ve been doing? Uh, no.
From the Wiki:
“Everytime you kill a monster you roll on a number of tables, inside these tables are different rarity categories. Magic find increases the chances you will get higher categories. For example if there is a 1 in 10 category, and you have 200% magic find you will have 3/10 chances to get that category. This improves not just the rarity of the items you get but can also improve your chances at getting trophies and rare crafting materials like lodestones.”
If the Magic Find bonus applies to each internal table “roll” and there are multiple “rolls” so that if there is a “roll” to check if a basic piece of equipment is Fine, and then another “roll” to see if the Fine is Masterwork, and then another roll to see if the Masterwork is a Rare, and another roll to see if the Rare is an Exotic, a +100% Magic Find is going to double each of those “rolls” and not simply double your chance of getting something better. In other words, if there are 4 rolls that you need to succeed on to get an exotic, you are not going to have just twice the chance of getting an exotic with a +100% Magic Find but 16 times the chance. Can you do events and dungeons 16 times faster in your ’Zerker gear than I can with my Magic Find gear?
So it all boils down to your fear of being taken advantage of?
Personally, I want everyone wearing Magic Find gear because I want them to get the best loot possible when they play.
The only valid reason not to wear Magic Find gear is that you are too awful of a player to win a battle with anything other than maximized stats, and I say that as someone who turns with my keyboard and often activates skills with mouse clicks. If a few hundred attribute points mean the difference between success and failure for you, then you need to learn to play your character more effectively.
Is that fair of me to say that you are a horrible player? Probably not. But then it’s also no fair for you to assume the only reason why I have Magic Find gear is that I want to take advantage of others. Here’s a free clue — I spend a lot of my time running solo so the only one that my Magic Find gear might hurt most of the time is… me. And when I do play in group activities, I’d be quite pleased if everyone else was wearing Magic Find gear, too, as some of my friends do when we go farming together.
Totally agree. Except I don’t necessarily “want” everyone to be wearing mf. I really don’t care what armor other people are wearing. And I wish other people wouldn’t care what armor I was wearing. But as you said, armor itself does not make or break you. And for those pugs where people wearing mf “leech” and “bring the group down” chances are if someone is sucking that much with mf armor, they wouldn’t be any better in zerker armor. And that’s the price you pay for going with pugs. I thought it was common knowledge that doing a pug has the chance to be a really kittenty group? And not that it’s really a big deal, but I do kinda feel the need to point out that sometimes the stats do help players (more than just killing faster)..I mean I run a condition based ranger, so all my main stats are set to condition damage. I kinda feel that running a condition build without condition stats in my armor/weapons/etc would be kinda useless…But I feel that most of these people complaining about mf just want the general “zerker warriors plz” kinda thing.
Which just makes me wonder…Should newer level 80s (or lower) who don’t have full exotics yet be allowed to run dungeons? Should people using mf food instead of power food be allowed to run dungeons? Using the logic of people complaining about how mf hurts the party, nobody except zerker warriors in full exotics/ascended should be able to run dungeons. This is such an elitist viewpoint and y’know why don’t you just join the other elitists and make your pug defintion say “zerker warriors plz ping armor” and worry about your own parties, instead of everybody else’s.
If anyone running mf wants to come farm or do dungeons with me while our mf armor is still useful, send me a whisper. (name Sarahsaur)
Why would you get 1 for 1? You did use the items. You never will get refunded 100% for used items unless there’s some manufacturing defect or something like that, which isn’t the case here.
Lol no they’re just getting rid of them. Like..you don’t sell someone an item, let them use it for a month, and then come back and say “Sorry I’ve changed my mind, gonna have to take that back..”
At the very least we deserve to be refunded for the items we spent on them. Since they can’t really refund us on our gold or time put into getting them.
Doesn’t matter. You still used the item for X amount of time, so you shouldn’t get 100% refund. Otherwise, you should also have to refund everything you gained while using that gear too.
You’re comparing this to a situation where someone like, turns in an old item or something. Which isn’t the case. Nobody is trying to return their armor back to Anet and get refunded. They’re taking it away. Since this is involuntary on our parts, and we effectively have no choice in the matter, the least they could do is refund us so we can hopefully buy stuff they won’t decide to remove from the game in two months.

So I spent Laurels, Ectos and Fractal Relics on my Ascended MF gear. I want them returned thanks.
I completely agree – If they don’t give back at least the laurels that’s dirty pool.
I’d like my 20 pristine relics back, too. And anyone who spent guild commendations on ascended mf gear should get those back as well.
I’d really like to know if these consumables will be permanent additions to our account-wide mf bonus, or if they’ll be like boosters/food that only lasts for a short while…
Unless all your characters are already lv 80…
Um I’m currently working on The Dreamer (no advice on lodestones, sorry.) All I have left is to finish my gift of fortune and get my precursor..
Generally I’ll go to Cursed Shore and farm there for a couple hours, which can get some nice t6 mats but you also drop a lot of heavy moldy bags which sell for 3-4s each on the TP. Which is great cause after an hour or two of farming, that’s atleast 1g just from selling those. I hadn’t thought of “melting karma” on orrian jewelry boxes, but the person above makes a good point with that as well.
Ummm I’m kinda taking it slow with mine, so I’m not in much of a rush to get all my stuff, so idk how much of a rush you’re in. Right now I’m saving up money to just buy my precursor off the TP because I’d rather spend the gold and have a guaranteed chance to get it than spend lots of gold on rare/exotic bows and gamble until it finally drops. But that’s just my personal preference. Anyways I’m sort of just casually collecting mats and ectos as I save up money, and hopefully by the time I can buy my precursor I’ll be close to finishing the gift of fortune as well. But after I get my precursor I plan to just buy whatever I have left since then I’ll be done and able to make my legendary.
Oh also, I kinda just play on one character and have for the moment entirely stopped crafting (other than cooking) and I sell all of my t1-5 mats for money. This works pretty well, especially since I drop a lot of t5s in Orr and once you get quite a few of those they can sell for a lot. And my only advice on lodestones is to maybe try fractals? I know cores and lodestones can drop there, and I’ve dropped some..but of course you have no control over which ones and sometimes they don’t drop at all =/
I’m guessing most of the players that are upset about this didn’t play GW1. Anet is a great gaming company, except for one glaring fault. They spend 90% of their time worrying about the loot we get and the quality. They won’t change, it will get worse, they are never happy, and we will never convince them otherwise. If it really upsets ya, then this game is not for you. I don’t like it, but learned to just let it roll off. Oh I’ll complain now and then, but I know it is falling on deaf ears.
It does upset me — and many others — because of the time spent into getting magic find gear due to its usefulness. As I said, I use it to farm for tier 6 mats and to make a little more money on selling the higher end items on the market to spend on other things that are more useful to me.
I don’t believe you have a right to tell me that “this game is not for me.” I really enjoy this game — I love it. But this is a significant change and will cause a lot of chaos no matter how they do it. Completely eliminating magic find in gear and making it only a permanent account-wide bonus is too big of a change to suddenly throw out there at this point in the game. People who spent time and money (gold or gems) on magic find gear are going to lose a lot of their hard work if ArenaNet isn’t careful. It’d be like working and farming for months and spending much gold and laurels to get a legendary and suddenly that legendary is completely removed from the game. Where’d all your hard work go to?
I like that while upset by the possible changes, you are able to present your critique and concern in a respectful manner. It’s really refreshing to see a civilized discussion for a change. And to that I’m hoping any additional tidbit of information a dev may want to share will come to this thread.
Yeah I DO wish they would give us more info. The main reason I think they haven’t is cause (as someone pointed out previously either here or another thread) it’s pretty obvious they haven’t been thinking about this for very long. I mean they JUST released a new armor set with mf in it. So it must have been very, very recently that they decided to entirely change up how mf works in the game. So I’m guessing it’s just the fact that it’s such a recent and new idea that they don’t have all the info and details figured out themselves yet. But then I kind of wish they would take more time to think over such big changes, and do it more gradually. When so many people use mf armor, and mf has been a big part of the game since day 1, I’m surprised they didn’t think about how much chaos and upset it would cause to suddenly announce something like this with zero details…
Anyways I’m hoping that after they did it anyways, they’ll manage to read some of the forum posts (with pretty well-thought out defenses of the current mf system/arguments about how switching is going to screw over tons of players) and maybe rethink this decision a little? Even if they’re solidly decided to go ahead with it, maybe they’ll decide to go about it much more slowly and really think through the consequences of doing this, and every little thing that needs to be addressed.
What is so fun about farming? I really don’t get it.
It’s not fun..It’s just a useful way to make money. And it’s an optional activity, so idk why it’s such an issue. It’s also really helpful when you’re say trying to make a legendary and need a lot of money, and a lot of tier 6 mats….
I find it very enjoyable.
Okay well cool. See? Some people find farming fun. So why should the way they enjoy the game suddenly just be thrown out cause Anet thinks we should all be playing one specific way.
Hmm well I guess it really depends on you, y’know? I’d say you should try each one out for about 20 levels atleast, and see how you like them.
For the record I’m a human ranger and I love it. Norn would also be a cool ranger race, though. And asuras…but yeah just give them all a little test trial and see which one feels best when you’re actually playing it.

Watch out, don’t give them any ideas…
Ranger has been available since launch. And my main is a ranger, so I’d love to help you out and answer any questions if you decide to play it
in-game name Sarahsaur feel free to whisper me!
That replacement makes the armor set completely worthless, though. If the players don’t give a rats patootie about Karma bonus, that armor is better salvaged for scrap.
The point is that they are removing a stat that people specifically sought. By removing that stat from armor, the associated gear is completely worthless to the person who owns it.
It’s like buying a Windows gaming computer, and halfway through the year, someone swaps it out with a Mac. Sure, it’s basically the same thing, but now you can’t use any of the software you used to use, and most of your games don’t work.
Yeah exactly..this is like people are saying “Well they might switch it to another stat for your compensation” and I’m like..that’s not really good enough. I mean when I did CM runs to get runes of the noble, or spend gold specifically on things with mf stats..When I used my pristine relics and laurels for mf gear…That’s what I paid for. If you go to a restaurant and order a sandwich, and they come out and give you a salad, aren’t you gonna be confused and possibly upset because they gave you the wrong thing? It’s the same sort of deal..Simply changing the mf stat to something else (even if we get to choose it) is giving us one thing when we paid and worked for something else. Something that, mind you, up til now has been perfectly viable and useful and encouraged by Anet and gw2. Now they suddenly change their minds and want to make all of our work and money go to waste? It’s just not cool. Even if that salad was a lot tastier, worth more, etc than the sandwich..I want the kittening sandwich I ordered.
Glad they got rid of magic find (see posts that were made a long time ago) since it basically meant your party was carrying you on dungeon runs because they weren’t being done effectively by having 1-2 ppl running full MF while the rest up the group picks up the slack running normal gear.
kitten .
Okie dokie. First flaw with your argument: This essentially means that Anet should stop people from running dungeons if they don’t have full exotic “Best stat combo” (which is subjective and depends on build) gear. Basically someone who hasn’t managed to get full exotics yet, shouldn’t go in dungeons (which could help them get more exotics). People running support builds don’t do as much damage, shouldn’t be allowed to run dungeons. People using mf foods shouldn’t be allowed because hey, they could be using + power foods instead. They’re not as damaging and effective as possible.
Second, you do not have to run a dungeon with anyone. You pick your party. If you don’t want certain people/classes/stats in your party, then don’t put people with those in your party. Don’t join parties where those are acceptable. Don’t do pugs. Cause to be completely honest, we all know how pugs go. Nobody joins a pug expecting the best best best group EVER. You join a pug knowing it could be REALLY bad. But you join it anyway. Your choice, you had other options, you’ve got no right to complain when someone in your pug wears mf gear. For the record, you can still get through most, if not all, dungeons in mf/less than perfect gear.
Not all parties give a kitten about this. Plenty of people/groups don’t care what armor you wear in the dungeon. It’s only those people who want say, 4 zerker warriors and a mesmer for y’know cof p1 and stuff like that who probably would throw a fit over someone wearing mf armor. In which case, I wouldn’t be allowed in the party even with my dungeon armor on because I’m a ranger. And clearly people being so picky and elitist about who joins their party SHOULD be a bigger problem than people using mf armor.
A lot of people with mf armor don’t even use it in dungeons. Like me, a lot of people use mf armor solely for farming in the open world. When we go to do dungeons, we switch to our main fighting armor.
MF gear has been a design flaw from the beginning. The fact that you have a second set of armor strictly used for farming should be a huge indication that there’s something wrong. You aren’t playing with your optimal build. You are purposefully taking a penalty (one that directly affects your party-mates) so you get better drops. The better situation is that you use the build that is optimal for your character, not pigeon-holed into using junk armor just for drops.
Now, if ANET is smart, they would handle it this way. Ascended trinkets can be traded for a different Ascended item. Ring for a Ring, Amulet for an Amulet. If the trinket has an infusion, then you also get to choose a replacement infusion.
Magic Find Exotic armor and weapons can be traded in for the same piece of armor/weapon of a different (common) stat combination. The new piece will have the same skin as the one used to trade. Not sure what to do about Runes/Sigils…
They’ll replace MF with some other random unrelated and harmless stat. Like exploration xp, or a 1% karma bonus etc.. All they had to do is cap it. But that would mean they would need to rework armor stats, effectiveness etc.. etc. It was easier for them to remove it.
They wouldn’t do that, because then it’s still the same issue of not being “effective” enough in combat.
Just entered some fractals…Get the Ascalon one. Except me and a couple other people are human, not charr. Not that this is a big deal or anything, but I’ve been seeing a lot of bugs in fractals lately. You know that saying “Don’t fix what isn’t broken?” Maybe Anet should listen to that. Stop trying to “fix” the mf and whatnot because some people get upset when they join pugs, and get a bad group. It’s a pug, get over it. Why don’t you try to fix what IS broken instead. Like y’know, the bugs.
The only valid use of MF is if you are being a leech, letting other people kill the enemies for you, and simply tagging them. These leeches are bad for the group in some events where a champion or some such might scale up to account for more players being in the fight, even though some of them aren’t contributing to chipping away that scaled up HP pool.
So why don’t we ban engineers/healing support guardians/etc. from events too? Like MF users, they’re not contributing as much damage as the noble zerked 1-spammers.
Don’t forget anyone who hasn’t been able to finish getting a whole exotic set of armor yet. They’re not contributing as much. Clearly we should make dungeons/big events “full exotic (non mf or support) armor only” activities.
I was wondering about the mf utility infusion as well. But I think that item may be one of the few mf items that stay. Here’s why:
Look at the other utility infusions: gold+, karma+, xp+. These are all stats that you cannot get from base weapon and armors, and all offered by account wide permanent bonuses. To that extend, I’m guessing that runes and sigils with mf will not go away either. It seems to me that this move is to take mf out of base stat combo and use it more like the gold, karma, and xp bonuses currently in play.
I personally never worked for an mf set. That said, I am concerned about how they’re going to make this change, because like the OP said, the time and effort put into a full exotic mf set is never going to be appropriately compensated. Giving laurels back for ascended jewelry may be relatively easier.
My issues with this is, how long have they been evaluating this issue? My guess is not for long, because ascended jewelry haven’t been out for long, and they carry mf in the stat. Hell, exotic celestial just became available for craft, and they carry mf. While many people who like the celestial stat combo may find mf as a bonus they didn’t need or want, how many others aimed for celestial because of mf? Bottom line is, if they had eliminating mf on their minds, continuing pumping out items with mf was a bad way to warn people. On the other hand, if they only started thinking about doing this in the past 1.5 weeks (since Bazaar started and celestial came out), then there must be some disconnect of intent/communication between different groups of devs at ANet. In the case of the latter, I hope this is provided with a lot of detailed information, and implemented very slowly or very late, to give people a chance to transition.
My 2 cents
Yeah..it doesn’t make sense that they would make an entirely new set of armor with mf stats, and then 2 weeks later say they’re ditching mf armor. A little more answers, a little more consistency, would be very welcome here.
Also I was just thinking..I for one, love skins and different armors and I really have way more exotic coats than any one ranger needs. But I was thinking..if they do something like some people have suggested, where you trade in mf armor for mf consumables or something..what happens if you’ve put a special skin on your mf armor? I mean while they keep throwing more and more special, limited-time skins at us…I’m sure lots of other people have thought to use these on their mf sets, to be able to really use all of the new skins. so what if we have say, a sun/wind/lightning catcher skin on an mf backpiece? Or that dragon helmet on an mf helmet? Etc? And if we were to salvage, or trade-in these pieces to get our compensation, we would essentially be losing a special, limited-time skin that we can’t get any more. I don’t feel that this would be really fair, since they didn’t give any real warning that players were going to lose a whole set of armor. I guess, at best when you trade it in (if thats what happens) you’re given your mf compensation as well as the skin itself back.
Only piece of gear I am worried about is the utility infusion. I think its like 20 laurals. I hope that if they remove it they compensate us all with our laurals back. It will be interesting to see how they handle this. I don’t believe magic find should have even been a gear stat to begin with but they do need to find a way to handle removing it through some kind of compensation.
Yeah I have one of those too..And that’s kinda a big thing because it’s PURELY mf and it was a lot of laurels.
Really upset about this. I mean and the way they worded it? “players being forced to choose.” ..Not really. You can have a good, combat set of armor as well as a separate mf set of armor. A LOT of players do. And okay, I guess you have to choose when to wear each one, but that’s just like..choosing what weapon or pet is best for a situation. Like if I’m out farming in Orr, I can wear all my mf gear. But if I’m about to go do a dungeon, I’ll put my normal fighting gear on.
And I mean..really what kind of compensation will there be for this. You can’t really return any of the time or gold I spent working to get all my mf gear. Will I atleast get my guild commendations (spent YESTERDAY), my laurels, and my pristine fractal relics back? Do the items just, disappear or do the stats get changed? (Probably the second one so they don’t feel as bad when they fail to properly compensate).
I also don’t really understand why this is happening. The system seemed fine to me about mf..We could choose whether we wanted to care about mf or not (cause some people just don’t), and if we wanted to put time and money into raising our mf we could. It made mf, and therefore better drops, an incentive to work towards. Now what is it gonna be? An account-wide bonus of like, 10% max from achievement points? (Which as pointed out in another thread, simply rewards players for being here longer and punishes new players. Instead of giving the option to put the time/effort/money into mf or not). And are these new consumables gonna be a permanent increase to your account-wide mf, or simply like the boosters we already have that may last an hour tops?
I have 105 unspent skill points, and Im sure the rest of you have the same or more. Give us something to spend all these points on. I mean you have all these skill points spread throughout Tyria, but now we just hold on to these things for no reason at all.
You can spend them on things. That npc by the forge sells things for skill points. I wanna say you might be able to buy a couple other things, like obsidian shards with skill points too somewhere else…? But I may be getting that mixed up with something else.
9,238 points and climbing.
I do think WvW achievements need to be more realistic, but the reality is, there’s a lot less to do in WvW over all as an achievement than there is on all of PvE.
Still, they could add some new achievements to WvW if they wanted, maybe achievements centered around leveling different professions in WXP.
Considering we need to kill 1,000,000 yaks for Yakslapper and I’m sitting at a comfy 4,630 nearly a year after launch of dedicated/hardcore WvW play between The Professionals an Team Legacy, I’ve only got 2,000 more years until I get my title
Wait there is a title for killing yaks? Omg. New goal.
well actually this has been great. whenever i look up guides theres always a grind involved. i mean i do farm every so often and i get lucky with t6 mats. i guess a long time process isnt that bad. Thanks this has actually been very informative. i guess i was just feeling a bit rushed.
Nah don’t worry about rushing with a legendary. I mean I know some people can get them faster than others and want to grind and farm all day every day until they get them..But you don’t have to. Personally, I’ve been slowly, casually working on mine since about February. I mean I definitely could have had it done by now if I had focused more on it and less on other things, but I’m in no rush. And you don’t have to be in a rush either. Take it as fast or slow as you want.
and if a thief use a shortbow against a ranger the thief must be just that crazy.
i don’t know what people expect from ranger but with both bows they are the faster and the more ranged out there, also the pet is always a pain.
whenever i face a ranger in pvp it’s a nightmare, especially with the autotarget on! my god!!the other day as a ranger in full berserker gear i could defeat 3 people near a camp in wvwvw, than other two came along and feared me all the way to death so they rallied, but before the new op necro bandwagon came along i was winning on my own. no thief there though. and a thief never killed me ranging anyway, they usually 2 shot me from behind appearing from thin air
Hahaha. I’m actually a ranger myself and normally pve, but started spvp like a week ago…
There was one day in a pvp match I ended up against like, 3 rangers all running around together. It was AWFUL. Felt like I was being attacked by a zoo. Just pets everywhere, all in the way.
Just playing the game naturally Since launch I have only accumulated around 40-50/250 for each of the T6 trophies. I am still hoping that by the time they hit 250 I will have had a precursor drop. I’m not in any rush, but I’ve got my gift of battle and gift of the explorer ready to go.
Omg I know. I’m slowly accumulating all of my tier 6 mats (some faster than others)..which actually it’s really weird, like I have about 180 of one mat and only about 45 of one other. Anyways, I’m getting really close to having all of my ectos, and especially with the ecto price having gone WAY down..I’ve been really tempted to just buy some lately. But I always remind myself that by the time I have enough money to buy my precursor, I will definitely have already finished up my ectos just from salvaging. And I know I’ll have plenty more tier 6s by then too. Although once I get my precursor, anything I still need left I’m planning to just get the money and buy it cause then I will be done and ready to forge!
But thats kind of my point. The legendary isnt about stuff thats fun to do or challenging to do its about things no one wants to do. Im not complaining about the whole process because some things i think are cool. the gift of mastery seems to be pretty fun to get because you have to be involved in a lot of different things to get it. but the other two gifts , fortune and the speclific one just look as if a-net said lets get random t-6 mats and make people get them all because that will be a challenge right one that follows with what this game is meant to be.
But thats beside the point because im talking about the precursor specifically. as you said its up to players which it reallys shouldnt be. When i watch guides from months ago on how to get legendaries they state the price to be 250-350g which is ironically heartbreaking to see. something so vital to the process should not be up to players to decide the price of. Honestly a-net nerfs when people farm the same area over and over again which imo is somewhat justified. And they ban people who use exploits which is def justified. so why do they let people make 600g off of luck? they should definitely overhaul the precursor system.
also just wanted to say thanks to the previous replier because i didnt realize how much gold i would get from just doing all the other challenges in the road to get the legendary. and i will probably have enough by just saving. But of course saving all my gold will really harm the fun i have when trying out new things…
Well, the precursors aren’t solely determined by the player market. Only the ones on the trading post. And the trading post reflects the game’s economy, based on the players. So sorry to say, but it is determined by players (and not just the people selling, because if prices were really “too” high, nobody would pay it. When people pay for precursors at steep prices, that sets the price there. It’s supply and demand)
But you DO have the option to try for a drop from a chest or use the forge.
Personally, I’m saving up gold to buy my precursor. It’s my personal decision because I feel like if I’m going to spend a lot of gold either way, I atleast want to choose the way where getting the precursor is guaranteed. I don’t want to buy bows and bows and more bows and keep throwing them in the forge with the hope that The Lover will pop out..I’m sure eventually it would, but I just like the security in straight up paying for something and receiving it. Even if that means I ultimately have to spend more gold to get it. But it’s all about what you want to do, and how you wanna go about it.
Don’t worry so much about having to farm Cof p1 or anything like that..Because legendaries are not an overnight or 1 week or whatever thing. They take a while. So you really have no need to do cof p1 or Orr farming all day. I mean, I’m not finished yet, but the only time I farmed cof p1 for my legendary was when I was getting close to getting the last of my icy runestones and I just wanted to get the last 15 or whatever in one go..So I farmed cof p1 that day to get enough gold to buy all of them, cause I just really wanted to be done with those things. But it’s really not necessary

I’ve made two so far. The Lover put me back 182g and Dusk 570. I’ve played over 2500h and only two days ago did I get a precursor drop from Modnir..Venom, worth a whopping 14g LOL
It is a legendary quest.. You will have a story to tell about the three months of your life you gave away to have a very rare weapon you will be regularly asked about.
Some may feel compelled to minimize your achievement, but you and a majority of the people you come across will appreciate it.
.. And after all that grinding, you will have upped your game to a level where it’s obvious who bought them from RMT’s and who earned them.
Good luck!
182 for The Lover? That’s awesome! Saving up for it right now, it was at 600g a while ago but it’s been steadily dropping in price and now it’s down to around 470g. Of course I only have about 60g right now saved up for it..So it start going up again before I can buy it.
Anyways…The whole point of legendaries is that they take a lot of time and effort to get. Not the kind of challenging like, “Figure out the mechanics of this dungeon, learn your class, and become skilled enough to get through the dungeon and kill the boss”..but challenging like “This is going to be long, hard and boring. It’s not going to be fun but if you REALLY are dedicated and persevere, you’ll get there. And in the end, it’ll be rewarding.”
It’s all about what you’re willing to do. And some parts of getting a legendary are easier than others. In my opinion, the Gift of Fortune and Precursor are the 2 hardest pieces. But as I said before, there’s no real rush to get one..If you don’t feel like you want to spend the next several months saving up and farming and trying to get enough money for a precursor, and 250 of every tier 6 mat? Then don’t worry about it. There are plenty of other things to enjoy and when you decide you feel ready to commit to a legendary as a goal, then go for it. And you can always be more casual about it and not go hardcore farm farm farm grind spend money on nothing else…But if you’re more casual and slightly saving up, farming a little bit at a time inbetween doing other things, it’s going to take longer. Which is fine if that’s what you want to do, but you should really just figure out how you want to go about this.
You noticed just now that PvE is 90% of the achievement system? Lol.
Just focus on a couple of achievements each evening, then go WvW or something. Jump puzzles are generally easy points, especially if you can get a guild Mesmer to go along with you. Hell why not use the entire guild and make something fun out of it? I am sure there are plenty in the same position. Just pick a time and an achievement.
That’s a really good suggestion. I love taking a big group of guildies to all go do a jump puzzle together. I mean I love jump puzzles as it is, but they’re a lot more fun with other people. And then you can help eachother figure them out and get through them, and I’m sure it makes them more endurable for those who don’t enjoy them.
To be honest, WvW just kind of bores me. I want to say it’s that it’s kind of repetitive, and individually I don’t feel like I’m really contributing or doing anything. I mean you go into wvw and you find a commander, follow them in a big zerg, attack somebody else’s tower or keep or whatever, take it over, and move on to the next one. And the fights are zerg vs zerg. Not a lot there for individual skill, you just stay in the group and use aoes. And half the time there’s lag and you may not even be able to see half the people around you. I mean I’ve done some WvW before and it’s okay..It can be fun, for a little bit..But I can’t see myself seriously getting into it because it just gets too repetitive and too boring too quickly.
I like pve because there’s just so many different things to do, and I can hang out with my friends or decide to go do a dungeon or jump puzzle or guild mission or exploring or whatever with them. There’s just a lot of variety and different scenery and whatever. I like spvp because you’re in small groups, and you can get fair 1v1 fights, where the fight actually depends on you individually having skill and everything. The biggest fight you could have in pvp is like 5v5 which is still relying on every person to do their part..not like a big zerg where you can hide behind 30 people and blindly aim because you’ll be guaranteed to hit somebody.
And other people have posted some good points about the wvw maps getting a little stale..I’m sure if they introduced new maps and environments to WvW, I’d at the very least go check it out and be interested for a little while. Plus while you may want to deny it, if you enter wvw as an inexperienced player…You can see a lot of people complaining about noobs not knowing what to do, or not having good wvw builds, or whatever. It’s not very encouraging. I also think I would feel better if I had a better idea of what was going on..Like I’m sure my server in their big WvW commander organization has some strategy each week about how to play it against the other servers..but I never know any of that. So when I step into wvw, I’m kinda following a big group of people following a leader who may or may not know what they’re doing, all for some strategy that I have no knowledge of.
Traps are, just like in Mario Kart and similiar games, only useful for extending your lead. And yes, there are brutally mean places to put them. But that is the game and how it is played.
Remember that you still can see the false power-ups and you can activate your Grounded skill to avoid getting affected by them. Which you should. And it is easy to tell the false ones. They’re the ones that are in odd places.
Yes and no?
Getting a fake powerup in Mario Kart is a bit more rare, since there’s shells and other things to get as well. In the Sprint, 1-3 place all get fake powerups. Fake powerups in Mario Kart aren’t usually as bad either, since they can rarely be placed where the player has to repeat large sections of the race.
They can be seen, but it can be difficult when moving quickly across the race. And in some places they can’t be avoided at all before you’re right on top of them (Lighting Jumps). Or if someone puts it right next to you while racing, since they become active immediately. Grounded is the best way to deal with them in my experience, but you do have to keep going out of your way to pick that up. And it’s possible to use up one grounded on a bomb, and then find another bomb before you get another.
They’re just a little too strong to give to the 1st place player every single powerup. Remove the knockdown, replace it with an immobilize, and remove the powerup removal. And then mix in some blinds for the 1st – 3rd places to pick up.
The problem is that the other ‘attack’ skills only affect those in front of you. They are 100% useless when you’re in first. So then do you give the person in front nothing?
As for fake powerup visibility? I do agree that there isn’t a whole lot you can do if they put one down on a lightning jump landing area. Other than that, though, you can always see them before you would hit them. Just gotta remember to use Grounded.
And tbh hitting a fake powerup on a lightning pad is about the same as getting hit by lightning storm while doing the lightning jumps…Basically you’re screwed either way, unless you’ve got Grounded on. And as you said, fake powerups are all someone in 1st or 2nd place really has.
Wait..so your whole party quit just because you actually had to fight the cultists?
Thought these were dungeons, man.
Uhh I would go with a new character slot..It’s 800 gems ($10) for one new slot. Not sure about right now, but pretty sure gw2 was like $60 when I bought it..And a new account should get you 5 character slots..So that’s still not even a better deal.
than sorry if i misunderstood the post, but what’s the purpose of telling players the kite will be soon available when player themselves can already tell it to other player who asks (it was written in the mail with the kite by arenanet) and anyway when it will be released they can see for themselves
“Hello! Thank you for not spending any money on our game, and as a result you do not receive a free gift in return. However, if you would like to start changing your habits, the kites will be available in the gem store in the next week.
Genuine thanks from us here at ArenaNet, hope to see your money soon."
This was months ago, it’s been fixed now…But this was me uh inside a shark tank in Vexa’s Lab. Was odd because there was actually no water in that tank…
What I hate are the traps placed in areas that are guaranteed to knock you off and set you back, sometimes a lot. I don’t use the traps against other players. I know they are in the game by design but personally I see them as the cheap way to win. When I run a race and there are few or no traps, I enjoy the race no matter where I place. When I run a race and there is trap after trap set to knock you off a platform, I want to slap someone and I feel very hostile towards the rest of the players. I don’t say anything but it reminds me of the competitive jerks that hit people in the throat with their elbow when the ref isn’t looking.

I mean, mariokart has more items than this race does. And some of the items in this race (gale?) don’t really seem to even do much. The only 3 really useful, offensive items in this race are the fake powerups, the lightning storm, and light travel. People at the front of the race can’t drop light travel (which is good cause I’d hate to see the whining about that), lightning storm is a decent move, but not really gonna kill you unless you’re mid-jump across a gap. I do think the range on the fake powerups is probably a little too much..I mean they should be about the same range it takes to pick up a normal powerup. But they’re the best item a person at the front of the race can pick up.
You can avoid them too. You can use the Grounded skill, you can BE the person at the front of the race, or if you spot one, just stop and let the next person behind you hit it. (Kind of mean, but hey.) Anyways it’s just a race mini-game..
I think you’ll find many of the threads complaining about the lag arn’t complaining because they’re losing. I know most folks out there are probably my better at the racing.
What bothers me is this whole idea looks so much fun yet I physically cannot participate due to skill latency making the skills behave extremely erraticlly.
Actually you’re the first person I’ve seen say this. Every time I see people complaining about it, it’s because they want that achievement. Not because they want to play the game or care about the race, they’re just angry that Anet made a title/achievement that they aren’t able to get.
Then do the grind then for the 16 achievements without doing the JPs there are 16 alternatives.
1. Strangers from the Sky
2. Voyage to the Bazaar
3. Ascent to Zephyr Sanctum
4. Diverse Trader
5. Grandmaster of Om
6. Sanctum Sprint
7. Parachute Pilferer
8. Kookoochoo the Incredulous
9. Poor Man’s Kite
10. Kite Bombing
11. Colossal Kites
12. Like Clockwork
13. Crowd Favorite
14. Crystal Obsessed
15. Pickup Completionist
16. Lessons from the Sky/Speedy Sprinter/Sanctum Sprinter/Kites of Iron/Kites of the Night/Best. Dive. Ever.So yes you have a lot of options. The sky crystals aren’t JPs they are easy to acquire with very little jumping at all. You mostly have to be creative with your 3 abilities. Sanctum Sprint is easy as well and it doesn’t involve jumping except a few vertical ones (which isn’t complex). Best dive is easy to acquire and even if you aren’t that great there is a video by Dulfy that makes it easy and do know Dulfy doesn’t like JPs either but she managed to acquire these achievements. Kites of Iron is easy and it is simply jumps (something I know most people do in this game already moving around). When it shakes just pause and take your time. Kites of Night is easy too and the kite isn’t located at the end either. As you can see you can easily acquire 16 achievements and if you don’t mind grinding then certainly you shouldn’t mind having to try a few times instead of just getting the first time for some of these. Kite Bombing just requires some drops and jumping small gaps very easy to acquire the achievement.
Pretty much it is easy to acquire 16 achievements and for different people it might take more time because you might fail a few times or you just need to put a bit more effort (trial and error). So in a sense you can grind your way to it.
Lastly, the node isn’t mandatory at all it gives something for those that complete the achievements. But if you don’t have it you will just miss out on a few quartz per day which isn’t a big deal. If you wanted the boxes you can always grind the other materials to trade it in and you are willing to grind. On top of that, you can only make one charged per day and most people have an excess amount of quartz around.
I think you didnt do it, 50% of thing you posted are in jp ! ;/
Ding ding ding…I love how people that can do or enjoy jumping puzzles just assume other people are wrong for not liking them.
This last update for LS is over 50% required jumping. Without doing the jumping puzzle part of it, you cannot complete this LS content.
To be CLEAR…I’m not advocating removing JP from the game…just don’t hinge new content on it.
If every 1/5 living stories revolved around jumping, would that be a problem? I mean the fact is, jumping is a part of this game and there ARE players that enjoy it. Is it right to ask Anet to simply ignore that part of the population because the louder part of the population doesn’t like jumping? Not every living story has involved jumping, or maybe has had pieces involving jumping but was not solely a jumping thing. So if Anet released living stories that for the most part were story missions, combat, whatever..and then every once in a while released a jumping one, would that be okay with you people? I mean you have to realize some people really enjoy this kind of content and it’s nice to be recognized by Anet and given interesting/challenging content for everyone.
I would like a pet elder dragon…
I think they should create a way for us to make a “favorites” list in our recipes..Kinda like how you can have a “Favorites” list for dyes..Cause I feel like people generally have a small set of things they normally craft, like if I’m cooking foods there are a few things that are the only things I ever really need to make..So it would be nice if we could just create our own favorites list to save the recipes we want to be able to access more easily and stuff
How to think and play outside of the box:
Don’t revolve your game experience around achievements. Come up with your own ideas, do them, and don’t just use the Achievement panel as a checklist of everything you need to do in the game.
Now you can thoroughly enjoy and create new ways to play this game. As many new ways as you can imagine. Have fun.
I love my kite it’s so cute! I got the blue air one and I love how it follows me around =D
I really like the animation of them and that they are tiered instead of just a generic kite. They match the other looks of the event.
And I actually really like that it’s just a toy item. As much as I love new skins, if they keep making so many new special skins so fast, y’know..I only have so much armor. So many backpieces. This was just a nice little item that’s fun and it looks awesome, but it is unique from other items. Only could be better if it wasn’t taking up inventory space =/
I’d still really like to be a kodan. Rawr.
I love my kite it’s so cute! I got the blue air one and I love how it follows me around =D
The whole point of legendaries is that you spend a lot of time doing crap nobody wants to do so you can get a special unique weapon that only people willing to do that much work can get. If you don’t want to go through that process, then don’t worry about making one. They aren’t supposed to be easy to get.
And as for precursor prices, that is entirely about the players. Precursors are rare and hard to get, and of course a big demand for them from anyone who wants to make a legendary. Therefore they are going to be expensive on the trading post. Low supply (super hard to attain) and big demand (people desperately seeking alternate options to the forge). And so, they’re expensive. You don’t have to buy one, you can spend the same amount (or more) gold buying rare/exotic weapons to throw in the forge, if you want. But it’s most likely not going to cost you any less.
Though, if you’re serious about making a legendary..It’s going to take you a while to get all of those tier 6 mats, clovers, etc so what I’d suggest would be as you farm and do whatever you need to for that, save up money. Unless you are really rich in-game through playing the TP or converting gems to gold, making a legendary means you are going to be poor for atleast a few months. Trust me. That’s just how it goes. If you don’t want that, or you want to focus on something else first, then just do that. Legendaries aren’t goin anywhere.
..Really? The kite is like, a toy. It’s purely cosmetic and for fun. You can’t do anything with it except run around. It’s not like they gave certain people precursors and left you out.
Also as Just Trogdor said, it’s a surprise bonus gift..You don’t buy gems because you think “If I spend enough money, one day maybe they’ll send me a cute, but usekitten nus present!!!”
Also these kites will be available in the gem store for everyone to buy if they choose to.
And thank you ArenaNet! I really love the kite, it’s adorable, and it’s really nice for you to recognize me spending money on your game and sending me a surprise present.
