Geo. Seems you outspend me on this game. I’m not one to lose a good challenge, so let’s see if I can top your amounts. May the best man win!
You know this is Colin’s second account right
I have a funny feeling it might be tassel that is bugged , I noticed a post in the Bug section.
My Jade Staff disappears half way through my back like its embedded through my toon.
poor toon
That sounds horrific
Yes I got the GS two days ago and the tassel is also only appearing from certain angles. Spotted it right away, not the end of the world ofc but its a very cool feature to the weapon so would be nice if fixed.
Sorry but living story is just a grind. Dragon bash showed that once again… grinding pinatas and firework. This is rather disappointing.
Festivals are always a grind or you think they should just give you a hat for being 10 min in the game watching the fireworks?
Nah, but would be great if, like I mentioned in a previous post, it didn’t just required you to run around and press “F”. It should at least require some kind of brain activity.
I know what your saying, I can’t defend the firework and effigy lighting as anything but a pretty filler. However there are some really good puzzle type events in the game. Having played the whole game world many times over now I remember lots. Some test math skills while others test reactions or memory.
I also wouldn’t get hung up on how F is used interact, games like portal or even a good old game of chess show how endless fun can be gleaned from basic components.
I do think gamers expect more from games these days, as single player experiences evolve at a far faster rate MMOs have been left labouring the same old mechanics ‘kil ten rats’ ‘gather X orbs’ etc.
I’m sure AN hate that manifesto video by now but they did make a few statements which just are not true in this current build, or maybe more accurately it doesn’t seem like what was suggested. Like how a settlement will stay saved and the villagers will remember me. I don’t see this anywhere.
Regardless there are plenty of bold innovations throughout the game and I hope gamers recognise this was the first MMO developer in ten years to push the gendre out of that stagnant ditch it’s been in. Whohoo getting way off topic here (sorry)
(edited by Genophix.3098)
If you just died in PvP or WvW, it was probably me who killed you. GG!
That’s not fair Colin, you can’t count turning the server off as a win
Heya Feremist, have you seen any guilds you like? There’s also a section at the bottom of the forums that advertises guilds and what they offer.
I’m won’t advertise my own guild here as I don’t think it’s the right place but your very welcome to add me to your friends list and maybe we can group up to level up etc.
Regardless good luck in your hunt and welcome to Guild Wars 2
Yeah them granny pants my Mesmer wears are rather disconcerting
If this game was Blade and Soul..
introducing GvG and Guild schedules and Guild Alliances will give the game a boost.
The Endgame content is nothing, they should add more things as end game.
The only thing i see as End game content is getting Ascenden trinkets and an legendary
Yeah this is what I’m saying Mujtaba, like you have suggested we need far more activities to do once your hitting level 80. This isn’t for me really, I’m looking beyond my own personal wants and seeing what other players seem to be asking for or when on of our guild does a leaving post I take the time to ask why.
As I’m sure we all know there are the one time activities which once you’ve done players don’t usually do again and then you have your ‘renewable activities’ which don’t require content or updates very often. The obvious one in GW2 is the WvsW, it’s a full siege simulator with trade routes, objectives and NPC forces. Yes to some it’s become stale but it just needs some new variation and meaningful tweaks to make it fresh again. It also needs to have ‘meaningful objectives’ so for example when you cap a certain place it cant be lost almost immediately but also opens a dungeon.
So what you say? There’s plenty of dungeons in the game. Ok so here, right here we add motivation. Precursors (and in effect Legendarys) are the most sought after thing in the game. What would happen if AN said "ok guys, this dungeon has many stages, many layers and it will be hard to beat the mecanics. However once you have defeated all the paths and finished all objectives that pertain to this dungeon your reward is a precursor. " Just one per account, but a precursor none the less.
You add need, you add want and you add motivation. This is what Blizzard do so very well, they motivate their player base with want and need. I understand why AN don’t want a gear treadmill in their game and support their choice but you must add other motivations and other none stat based rewards. These rewards can be anything but I’d start by looking at what your playerbase keeps asking for.
(edited by Genophix.3098)
Yup it’s true, some event strings are really fun and having a nice reward at the end would be a nice cherry on top
That said they are still a reward in themselves but I’d never turn a rare away!
Nice posts guys, I couldn’t agree more.
Jheryn I’ve played most MMOs (yes Im that old!) and by on large the same pattern happens. Mass explosion of players on launch, then a gradual recession over the next few months until a stable playerbase is formed.
Guild Wars 2 has surprised AN by how well it did and is doing. I won’t pretend to know the numbers but I can see with my own eyes that while a lot of players in my guild are burned out I do meet a lot of new players coming into the game and playing for the first time.
Well, it doesn’t really matter if you are catching fireflies, helping with the crop or repairing a whatever. What you are actually doing is pressing “F”. Pressing the “F” button is no fun. It’s dull and get’s boring very fast.
And if pressing “F” fails, you can always just attack the mob and start mashing buttons because most mobs are on the buttonmashing level of difficulty which also is bad.
Maybe they can add so that you are actually doing something more when you are repairing a cog, like solving some sort of puzzle. At least something that get’s your brain working…
I take your point, but while I am pressing ‘F’ I do like to see how some of the bigger events play out as many have different outcomes.
Have you tried the Guild Puzzles? We unlocked them a few weeks ago and they are really good. If you don’t read up how to do them there is a lot to have fun with.
Wow I’ve tried to read all the posts in this thread but am going blind. To the OP I really relate to what your saying, your story is very similar to my own. It’s weird though, while I’m becoming aware of more and more people either leaving or just logging in once a week I’m still very happy with the game.
However I am becoming increasingly downbeat with the overall negative attitude of the player base. Not that they are wrong, it’s just hard to hear players burning a game you still love, especially when I can see their point.
I can also see why after taking a huge amount of time to post up not a single comment from AN but I could have told you they don’t usually reply on these subjects. I’ve made tens of threads suggesting (what I think) ideas for the game that would make it a far better experience. Not one reply yet
Bottom line is that this game is not what many (like myself) assumed it would be but unlike many I have found many enjoyable aspects of the game. As I’ve posted elsewhere we have had a blistering amount of additional content in the first year. Im also hopeful when I see most zones on my server teeming with activity. With an expansion semi confirmed and the fact it’s free to play I suspect GW2 will live for many years to come.
It’s interesting you think Im ignoring the OPs original points.. I am the OP
As to your second point I’m on Seafarers Rest, high pop and has been all the way to the top and back. Last night I was doing map competition in the three Char start areas and then in Met Province just before I logged. Mate I’m not lying the game is teeming with players new and old. People are chatting away in map chat and the playerbase that exists on my server seems happy enough. I can’t comment on others ofc.
I do agree, lots of have left, my guild has been hit really hard and so yes I agree I’m in the minority. I really thought everyone who picked this game up would be playing forever happy and clams but I’ll admit I was very wrong. It’s not got that hardcore gear progression that many want and so we arrive back at what Im posting this thread for.
I get that AN don’t want to keep players grinding for a single piece of gear for three months, but they DO need to find some other type of overarching motivation that will pull players back who are not like me. I’ve just seen the new patch notes for the 25th, you have to admit they are sending a amazing amount of content out the door.
I’m sorry but I couldn’t disagree more and here’s why.
I’ve never seen such a breadth of variation in objectives in events, from catching fire flies, fixing portals, growing crops, solving puzzles, disarming mines and a million more. Only last night I was running around a chamber in MP growing baby Asura back to full size with a grow ray thing. There are many variations on killing as well but killing is killing and there’s not much they can do about that.
Secondly are we playing the same game??
I’ve been astounded by how many hidden treasures there are, places that only a few have found but exist all the same and have been lovingly crafted. I even ran an in game photography competition because there is so much out there, especially underwater in the oceans.
I guess it’s all relative though, what you see as boring I see as fascinating. I’ve got 5 level 80s and am working on my next. Sure I have a week off here and there but I’m still loving the game and am still finding new events and even old events playing out in a different way that before.
There are so many nasty and sarcastic players on these forums it’s nice to see a few decent people chiming in.
While the content in Dragon Bash won’t set the world on fire (sorry ) I am really enjoying it. I’ve been doing world completion on my main so it’s been awesome to have a few extra things to do.
I do think players are becoming increasingly ungrateful for what we have these days in terms of gaming, like the world owes them X Y and Z. When I started playing games RPGs were flashing text on a screen. These days we have so so much to enjoy.
At the end of the day content is there and it’s upto players to decide whether to play it or not, I don’t get why so many people get so angry about it.
Thankyou ArenaNet for giving us the most beautiful MMO ever that does innovate, even if its not exactly what people were expecting. This is year one, I can’t wait to see where it goes next.
Are you really going to claim there is a lack of content?
I don’t see how anyone could claim there’s a lack of content. It may be among the most boring, pointlessly repetitive and inane content ever devised, but it is content nonetheless. Thanks for playing!
Yup agreed, while taking the factor of quality out and just looking at volume ArenaNet have provided an astounding amount of content in the first year. Just cast your mind back and think about it all.
Christmas,
Halloween
South Shores
Dragon Bash
Superbox
fractals (amazing)
and all this living story stuff.
Not to mention all the small updates and additions such as the WvsW progression system and fixing WvsW culling.
I’m not getting into the quality too much as someone has already said its all down to opinion but as far as I’m concerned the quality of content has been by on large excellent.
In my opinion we need a big push to add more maps and mechanics to WvsW now as that’s the ‘renewable source of fun’ in this game and its been largely unchanged since launch.
Stupid game using boring mechanics like hitting buttons on the keyboard. I will only consider it content if I have to hit buttons on something else!!!
Try this. Instead of just mindlessly zerging to every WP and then complaining about how fast and boring it is, run between them and do the events in the area. I did about 50 different events, many of which I had never seen before while running around and finding them. It broke it up, made it more exciting and was fun.
This actually makes it a better experience.
The thing about the effigies is – they are getting people out doing dynamic events in these areas. After the 6-7 effigy, I stopped porting and started running. Now, I find myself stopping to do events with larger and larger groups.
The same small group of players can complain here all they like – the proof is in the game. People are out doing dynamic events in these areas, and enjoying them. I say, well done.
If the effigies were a requirement, I would see an issue with “forcing” content on people. Since they definitely arent (even for those wanting the wings), there is no issue. If you don’t want to do this kind of thing – simple – don’t do this kind of thing.
That’s a good point, I was diving into a few myself.
Is it really not possible to write a mechanism in that detects if players are AFK? If you don’t move for 20 seconds you get the boot, simple.
I am really at a loss as to why this type of system isn’t placed in these games as standard because in 5vs5 even one player going afk messes it up.
I’m not being funny but every MMO I’ve ever played is 90% filler, as in boring repetition that we are forced to do.
This is so the game lasts a lot longer and the developers make more money. Ofc my theory holds more water in the subs model of MMO but you take my point.
The real question is why do we play MMOs? Well it’s not for the amazing storylines or unique combat at every turn. ‘Hey I swung a sword, hey I swung it again..’ It’s ironic GW2 is just the same as every other MMO in this respect but at least the PR team achknowleged the insane amount of repetition in MMOs.
So I’m curious as to what your complaining about, so they made you burn 30 effigies did they, what about the 40,000 mobs you’ve killed in the exact same way over the last 9 months? That’s ok?
Heya Temariah,
I think it’s a bit strong to say LaughingMan disgusts you, he’s only putting his point across as are we all. These forums are sometimes useful to the devs but often just serve as a soapbox for players to rant about issues they have.
Most of what your saying though I agree with, there is actually a hell of a lot to do but only if your the right type of player. I do spend lots I’d time enjoying the events, testing them, seeing if there are extra parts (like the one with the broken portal in Metrica Province). I also love taking screenshots and have even run an in game photograph competition in the past.
Unfortunately most players need a definite goal or objective and that’s where other games have made endgame, ofc we all know Warcraft has done well in this area so I get why people refer and compare to it when talking about ‘endgame’. If we’re honest the raids and gear treadmill have given WoW a far longer life that it should have had.
The bottom line is that I want people to love the game I love but most players I know across many guilds are leaving the game, this is bad for the game and is the beginning of a mass exodus. Myself and my friends are just getting sick of moving MMOs every six months and I was hoping GW2 would put and end to that.
I don’t think GW2 will fail, there is a nice healthy playerbase of happy players but obviously if 3/4 of them leave when TESO and Wildstar launch the speed they can improve the game will show this.
Who said anything about WoW?
You can extrapolate from what the gw2 team’s priority has been, and still is, to what the future will look like. For instance, taking the long-term end gamish goal of a legendary, and making them purchasable on TP in an attempt to gain gem revenue.
No no not buy it, earn it from dungeons!
I guarantee if you made an ultra epic hardcore dungeon and stuck a legendary at the end players would find a way, they would have to.
As a guild officer this has been one of our main problems, keeping our members happy and wanting to play. Most are gone now, playing other games while waiting for Wildstar.
I’m sorry to mention WoW but in this game there was a reason to be in a guild, you needed to find a group of players (40 or 20) who were switched on and knew what to do. You then needed someone willing to organise raids, get members looking at strategy videos and if raid members messed up they were out. When you saw the Phoenix mount bombing around Stormwind you felt that need to be part of a bigger group who could get you there.
As it stands now there is very little reason to be in a guild in Guild wars 2 and to be its just insane how little Guild stuff there is to do. I have to say after seeing most of the guild missions now they are so well designed, really fun and challenging so why can’t they apply this to a larger dungeons and add bosses?
At the end of the day this is what most of the players want, why not give it them? I start to listen to people when they say NCsoft forced AN to release early.
I think like most MMOs you only get that once big chance at launch to get players onboard, if people stop playing its very hard to get them back. Most people have decided if GW2 is for them or not and unfortunately many are moving on.
I agree with you Laughing Man that the game needs more freedom in terms of skills etc. I feel like GW2 lost a lot of what made people love GW1 and I can’t see any good reason for this. I personally find the game world very enjoyable but not for the reasons most do I suspect.
I have to take my hat off to AN because for the most part they have stuff to their guns and done what they thought was best but I hope now they realise they need to add some sort of goal for players. And if possible a goal that requires players to work together as a team (I’m sure I’ve heard of this in other MMOs!)
This content (whatever that might be) has to be hardcore, it needs to make players have to learn how to beat it and lastly there needs to be some sort of reward. Im talking about a reward that players want. Maybe as a one time account based reward dish out a precursor? This is the motivation Im talking about, something that gets players wanting to beat content.
3 coins for a precursor… i don’t think that’s a very good idea, because you would get yourself 1-3 legionaries fast and stop playing altogether…
I believe motivation does not come out of big rewards. but the experiences you get in the game, i have found Guild events and activities quite the motivation to keep playing Gw2
if guilds get more activities and getting into a guild, even a small one becomes easier, it can be really fun
If your right and if people acquired a few legendary weapons they would then quit then your kinda agreeing with me aren’t you? We shouldn’t have an almost unattainable item holding us in a game, we should be playing because we are having fun or at least feel the satisfaction of some sort of progression towards a goal.
I can only really comment on what I would do and what I think ofc but I think having better access to the legendary weapons would enhance my game and make me enjoy the toons I have more. As it stands now feel like I’ll never get one, even if I had the precursor I couldn’t afford to 100s of good for items etc. I play every day but I don’t grind dungeons so have never had more that 65g. I know you could say that I’m not willing to earn it but if you start grinding for weeks and weeks your not having fun and this seems like a waste of my time.
You mention guild missions, I agree they are really well done and a brilliant addition to the game. Unfortunately so many people have stopped playing in my guild now that we can’t do them any more. I am friends with many in the guild ankitten ot a guild hopper so I’m not really able to enjoy them now, I know I know my problem not yours but my point still stands.
Aside from guild missions which don’t last long there is no colaberation in guilds, no guild halls, no mass events made for guilds, no big raids or difficult bosses to bring down as a guild. This coupled with a total lack of gear progression (which btw ai don’t mind) what Im saying is that players need another motivation to keep logging in. There ARE other ways to motivate players but we need AN to recognise this and do something about it.
These living story additions are very timid and don’t really offer a players anything new, they are very pretty and fun for an afternoon but we need something with some meat that lets us grow as a player and as a guild. All this said I can see AN are working really kitten this game and I do love it for what it is, I just wish more people did because if more leave soon there won’t be a game.
Heya guys,
More and more I’m seeing players I know saying they have no motivation to play Guild Wars 2. Even though I’m kinda happy and still really loving the game I do see there isn’t a great deal to do once your level 80. I know AN have said its more about the journey rather than the end game but I still feel like we could do with more ‘reason to log in’ other than dailies. I know we will never see a gear treadmill or ‘carrot’ so how about this.
Back to my suggestion, seems like something most players DO want is Gems. So why not make Gems a reward for a select few activities.
I’m thinking, all players in the winning faction get 200 (or whatever) gems for a weekly win. I don’t know of course but maybe that would really get people motivated to get fighting.
Or how about this, every time your server wins WvsW you get a token, three tokens and you can trade it in for a precursor?
These are just ideas but what I’m driving at is there are lots of things GW2 players do want so why not use them to get the playerbase motivated to win or engage in some of the areas that have been quiet.
Thankyou for reading
Genophix.
Oh and the question (oops). I would like either sunrise or twilight for my Mesmer, both suit the class and look amazing. I just feel like I’ll never get a precursor to drop and as I’ve only ever had 60g total Ill never afford it.
I’m hoping they bring these new ways of getting precursors soon.
I personally can’t decide between Bolt and Incinerator for my thief. Both seem really well made and just in general cool. My necromancer will be getting Howler.
So what legendary(s) are you going for?
How close are you to your goal?
Bolt or Incinerator? (Just help me out here K?)
How has your day been going?
1. Sunrise for my warrior
2. Just started working on it. I don’t have a precursor, none of the mats and about 3g in my name. I am okay with this as it will give a long term goal.
3. Incinerator
4. I quit gw2 because of it being boring, just started playing again the other day and cant get enough. I spent multiple hours playing today with one arm while holding my sleeping daughter (5 months old) in the other. It’s been a relaxing day.
Nice! I was doing the same with my son, when he was sleeping I’m was playing GW2
He’s too old for that now, wants to pull my mouse into pieces and drool on my keyboard!
Ah ok thanks Krall
I saw the thread title and was like ‘yes! Totally’ but there would be problems.
I remember one of the best moments in wow was when I made my own parachute boots and jumped off Thunderbluff, landed in from of a few new players who thought it was epic. I really miss this kind of thing in GW2.
Thing is someone has made a good point, the game world as it stands, there are just too many places where this would cause problems. I think you need to make game world from scratch with this in mind or not bother. I remeber when they added laying mounts to the vanilla areas in wow, the devs must have had a mare going around all the flat textures tree tops and mountains
Has anyone considered gliders, these could only be usable in certain areas and have thermals to lift up high.
Good question! I totally forgot about these.
Heya guys,
So I received the three holo minis and have also had a few of the knights drop. Someone told me that I could get a rare mini by fusing all four so that’s what I did.
The mini I got doesn’t look anywhere as good as the other minis, short of buying them off the gem store is there any way to get them back? Like with weapons shouldn’t mini look better with rarity? I know this is just my personal opinion and someone else might think the shard thing mini might look epic.
Thankyou for reading,
Genophix
I got so many things wrong when approaching Guild Wars 2, lots of people did. We thought it was a game thakittens not. It’s painfully casual and as we have been aware of now many players yearn for end game raids (and indirectly a good amount of high end gear to a) show off b) increase your toons strength c) feel like your still playing for a goal).
I’m one of this games biggest fans, I play every day and still love roaming around looking at the beautiful game world, but I know I’m in a minority. Since beta lots of players have seen so much more potential in this game and understandably get frustrated. It’s like having a brand new Aston Martin but not being able to take it off the drive.
So many threads, asking for mounts, player housing, raids, harder content, better bosses, high tier gear etc etc. I can’t get mad at this people, they are just seeing a game that has such an amazing framework, if only it had some more of the things we all love from other MMOs.
Wildstar seems to have cottoned onto this, they are giving players what they want in buckets. I’m really looking forward to this game but I also know that I will still be playing GW2, why? Well not for the raiding I know that much.
I’m still hoping AN start to give us less ‘theme park content’ (although its all beautifully designed and realised) I also want some meat on my sandwich. I want new skills, new gear, new game mechanics that challenge and push my skills. I guess I want an expansion but I also want AN to give in and give us some of the things we want, I’ve heard somewhere that the customer is always right…
A dragon puzzle where you need to kill a dragon early on, then use of of his scales to get through the rest of the puzzle. There would be fiery bursts coming up between platforms and the scale is used as a downward facing shield to ride the fire.
Or something like that.
i always Play GW2 together with my wife, so our meps or the chance to drop something should be similar, just wondering if anyone else had the luck to drop those 100k holo wings from a mob?
so far i got around 7 knight minis, no tickets, my wife on the other hand has around 12 minis, 3 (!) tickets AND 2 holo wings from mobs
. I mean, is she really THAT lucky or did they change something? before it happened I had no clue that mobs can drop them.
Your wife played with u…? Thats awesome man. I wish my wife would play with me in this game.
Mine plays with me too xP
…And about as lucky. No major drops for me, but she’s already rockin’ a Ticket and a set of Wings… >> Lol
So AN are sexist and dig the chicks?
(Said in jest before I get sued!)

I know right? Mate your so lucky
If I ever get divorced ill be looking for a gamer girl, would make my life a lot easier!
He he some people do need the achievement, it’s called OCD
Seriously though, some people so like to get all the achievements, I’m a bit of a completionist myself so feel like its way to expensive. The most I’ve ever had is 60-70g so if I wanted that mini or the achievement 10-30g is insane.
I tried 5 rich coffers and didn’t g eat anything but candy, I hate this gamble for things I want. I didn’t get any skins from SS events either
I get what your saying, in its current state bosses are just not set up that way.
Ok so what AN need to do then is add three or four really good (perminant) dungeons, maybe in the new expansion that AN refuse to admit they are working on. Make them progressive, so you need to beat them in various ways while each gets harder and harder and then you finally get a new epic skill unlocked which is specific to you proffesion.
This would be something to work toward and offer a carrot that isn’t putting the game on the gear treadmill which so many people fear more than smallpox.
I do miss that epic quest feel of the game, I remember all the things I had to do to get my flaming mount on my Warlock in WoW. I read what I had to do and it felt like a massive quest and like you say, more personal.
Here’s to hoping eh.
I’ve suggested this a few times now and like your post had very little response. I also suggested that the player housing be functional so it has some type of grounding in the world.
Like you mentioned the player housing in Lotro was great, you could store things there, add trophies from bosses and make it look as you wanted.
Now then, what Wildstar are doing with player housing is beyond awesome and AN should take a look. You can use your house in so many ways, grow crops, attach rockets to make it fly, add taxi ports etc. Apparently you can even find items in the world that open instance on the grounds of your house.
This is what I would like to see in Guild Wars 2 and I’m sure I’m not alone.
While I do love a lot of the crafting in this game I do agree with what your saying here Bane. I do love how the crafting speeds up as I process a list of the same item, I love how I can store crafting items in a click of a button. The cooking also has so much imagination in its receipies, but…
Yes I was actually thinking this today, why does crafting exist in this game?
I do think about the engineer crafting in WoW and all the awesome things I could make. I remember jumping off Thuderbluff with my new parachute boots, just so awesome and don’t even get me started on the Gyro Copter
Bottom line, make it relevant ArenaNet and make it fun. Like the OP says, there is no reason for me to craft other than the sheer joy of crafting items (which I have to say I do love).
Here’s some ideas.
Tailors – can make tents to camp with (because camping is cool!)
Cooking – birthday cakes for guild members
Leather working – can make leather bound books which can be applied to your account page and put screenshots in (yes I know I’ve gone too far now right)
I’m sure every craft could have some amazing and fun items to make as well as the normal stuff.
So I’ve never played the original Guild Wars although I know a lot of players in my current guild did (and still do).
Something they have talked about is the way epic skills unlocked when major bosses were defeated. That sounds brilliant I thought, but hang on, why did we lose that for Guild Wars 2?
I’ve read and written a lot about the lack of progression in GW2. Personally Im very happy with the game the way it is but I do think you need goals to aim for and long term achievements. Of course the legendary weapons are this but so unattainable to most we could do with something else. These epic skill unlocks seem to fit that requirement perfectly.
I’d love it if someone from AN could chime in and let us know if they were ever considered but didn’t make the final cut and also could we see this system some time in the future?
Thanks,
Genophix
Heya Chris, it’s funny I just logged on to post something similar and saw your thread
I agree, more pets would be great, even though I do think we are already doing ok for a good range. My idea was for more of a beefy pet system. So I was just doing the washing up and thinking how I’d like to dive into my ranger and get all the current pets out there ‘need to do that’.
Then I thought how good it would be to have some kind of special pet as a reward. Charting and finding all the pets takes a long time and it would be great to have some kind of reward for that.
I’ve had the opposite experience on Sea Farers Rest. I have levelled 5 toons to 80 now and each time I’m setting off I am always suprised how many other players are running around. Last week I started an Engineer and I have to say it felt busier than launch week in Queensdale.
Maybe this is just my server, not sure tbh. Lets hope the new LFG tool will improve how people group up for events, dungeon runs etc.
They have always said they wanted to have a game where the journey was the endgame. For all the time I have spent playing WoW the dungeon hamster wheel Blizzard have brainwashed many players has to stop. Players running through the same dungeon 30 times a day for a single piece of gear is just desperately sad.
In this game people are still doing that. What about fractals? And dungeons and their dungeon tokens? The only real difference is that here you mostly do it for the dungeon skin and in other games you do it usually for the stats (though fractals are so popular because they give stats).
Gw2 really is not so much different than all the other games, some mechanisms are superior others are inferior. The story? The Gw1 story was much more extensive from the beginning. This story is easy and really quiet boring once trahearne gets into the picture. Its like they had this great story idea and how to make it personal and then they had to finish it and they quickly thought up the trahearne end.
I don’t agree entirely but I take your point, but I suspect any MMO that had dungeons with no reward at all other than the experience wouldn’t last long. On the back of what your saying I do wish AN would make boss fight a) harder and b) a bit more off the wall.
To be fair to them we are starting to see very interesting bosses, the end fight in Flame and Frost was great.
Like you say, people are still farming for rewards and even when them rewards are far less than the epics drops in WoW. Maybe AN should just drop the carrot into the game? I know I know I’ll get burned alive for even suggesting it but that was most players want.
Why not have the journey AND the nice juicy carrot at the end?
They have always said they wanted to have a game where the journey was the endgame. For all the time I have spent playing WoW the dungeon hamster wheel Blizzard have brainwashed many players has to stop. Players running through the same dungeon 30 times a day for a single piece of gear is just desperately sad.
If you go back and tot up all the updates, content, themed events etc we have had such an amazing ride and this is just the beginning. I know now that this game just isn’t for all MMO players.
I play for the sheer joy of playing. Running around looking for new things I’ve never seen before, this game world is just crammed with hidden gems, I like the fact that many players never see them so the few who have explored feel like they are the few. A jumping puzzle here, a few hours of WvsW there, a bit of time crafting a new armour set on my alt… I just love this game and will be here for a long time to come.
ArenaNet have also said they are aiming to get new content out every two weeks! That’s just insane. We also now know they are working on an expansion, cannot wait
I agree, I think I’m in the minority in that I enjoy this game just for what it is. I’m not saying I’m better than players who don’t, I guess everyone has a different view.
I thought this game was going to please a far larger percentage of MMO players but I can see I was wrong now. I happy to be in the slice that does love it, let the good time roll
Thank you for your very helpful contribution to this thread.
Maybe if we kept the discussion constructive instead of just venting and complaining, we could actually get ANet to respond to the OPs questions. That would be super-lovely.
Probably isn’t going to happen in another frustrating QQ-fest of a thread, though. Think about it! Thank you
What do you want Anet to say exactly? Here is what they’ll say if they post here.
“We are thankful for your input, and would like you to know that mini-games are on our radar.”
AKA: Never gonna happen cause they’re gonna lose players once TES:O comes out, and focus on gem store stuff or more worthless living story stuff in order to keep making money.
Was a good dream though when the game launched. Tons of mini games would have been great.
I thought ArenaNet had proven they put players above profits. Remember when they stopped selling digital copies until until the lag issues got sorted out. If your gonna attack a companies actions get your facts right eh.
You have misunderstood my point. I am in favour of no subscription fees. I have been pleasantly surprised by how much we have been given in a game that doesn’t require a penny after the initial purchase.
We all know the subscription model is dead as a door nail and if fact companies like Turbine have found themselves making three times more money once they got free to play. What I am saying is that when your not paying £15 a month for a game you feel less under pressure to get your money’s worth and so this means players can take a few weeks off. This is great but for a guild leader it’s a nightmare as anyone here who’s done it know guild admin can be a hard job.
As for the 20% off, I’m just talking about motivation in games. At the moment players are finding there is no motivation to play WvsW, no motivation to do dungeons or even log on. When you dangle something players want you will see action. Guilds will become necessary and colaberation between guilds will take place.
If you read my post properly you will see I’m very happy with the game in its current form, I can live without raids or gear progression. I’m just trying to shout up (and hopefully someone at the top will hear) that this game is loosing players in droves and these are the things I think they need to address to stop this.
(part 2)
The second big problem is progression, or lack there of. AN should be congratulated for trying so hard to break us free of gear grind, a situation where players play the same dungeon over and over and over again for a 0.05% chance of a piece of gear. It’s such a waste of time and when you stand back its actually really sad. Turns out, most players still want this reward system. There’s no denying it, Guild Wars 2 is painfully lacking in high level content that an entire guild can take part in, up until guild missions it been WvsW. I love guild missions, they are awesome and add so much.. but it’s not raiding.. MMO players want raiding, it’s that simple. Raiding that is hard to beat, that rewards players with nice items, this then adds a necessity for players to be in a guild. I remember players desperately fighting to get raid spot in WoW because they knew only the best guilds would get them through the high end dungeons.
On a side note I saw Shatterer killed in 40 seconds yesterday, it’s so easy to kill now. Oh how I would love it if one day all the farmers turned up for their quick win and it landed and wiped the floor with them. These epic bosses need to have their difficulty really looked because in the context of a challenge they are devoid of any.
Lastly I’d just like to mention WvsW. Initially I was bowled over by its scale and brilliance but now I’m seeing the big flaw. Nothing counts for anything, every victory can be undone within minutes. For some (me) the sheer joy of the fight is the fun part but is gutting to see all your wins undone by the time you log back on. I think we really need some new objectives that make players want to fight for them. Imagine an objective that gave you 20% off items on the gem store..
Ok so if you’ve not gone blind yet then stick with me I’m almost done. While many players have already moved on from Guild Wars 2 I suspect many like me still remain. We love to just be in the game world and admire it for what it is. For me this is what AN need to focus on.
- adding more player controlled content like player housing (take a look at what Wildstar is doing, housing that has an actual use)
- guild housing that acts as your own Guild vs Guild arena
- a new skill system where you gain skills from bosses you beat. You make these encounters very difficult and in turn give guilds a reason to exist again. We need to be able to offer our members more than a TS server and some good music
- give players something to play for (I know your already doing this in many ways) like big objectives in WvsW
- make content tougher to beat
- a dungeon finder! I have never understood why this isn’t in the game. Having to spam LA is not a worthwhile interaction I’ll miss
I posting this not because I’m unhappy with Guild Wars 2, but I can see the problems it’s facing and I want this game to be a success.
Thanks for reading my post.
Heya guys,
I’m hoping this post gets read by the developers of this game as well as my fellow players.
Ok, I love Guild Wars 2. As soon as I saw it in beta I knew the developers were really pouring so much into this game. There are so many great features that we just haven’t seen anywhere else. They have also tried to break us free of the insane gear grind WoW has brainwashed us with, they even attempted to try a game outside the trinity.
The game world itself is beautiful, sublime and crammed with unique places to find. Having the ability to dive into the stunning water is just the icing on the cake. Massive server vs server areas with a fully working siege model, interesting classes that look amazing and so much more. On top of all this, free to play! In short I thought all our MMO wishes had been granted.
So here we are months on from launch now and all around me people are leaving Guild Wars 2. So what gives?
Have ArenaNet dropped the ball? Well no, not really. On top of an already huge game we’ve been given an almost unbelievable amount of content. Lost shore, Halloween, Christmas were three big ones all with themes, items, activities and all designed with such detail and scale it seems insane this stuff isn’t permanent. Also we’ve had Fractals, Superbox and now the living story (which is finally starting to get going finally). We’ve also seen so many other fixes and improvements such a culling fix and so much more. I think AN have really kept to their promise and then some.
I think the problem is two fold. First up what I thought was a massive plus now turns out to be a problem in the long term – free to play. As a guild officer we’ve struggled to keep our members interested in the game and over the last month less and less log in. As a big PvP guild we are in contact with many other guilds and this pattern is being seen across the board, this worries me as ArenaNet don’t seem to be acknowledging this. The recent price drop makes me wonder if they are just keeping their poker face up, which is fair enough. If I’m honest I’m not really sure what they should do.
Yeah fishing in Lotro was amazing, the fact you could stuff and mount them, then out them on the wall in the house you owned.. awesome sauce. I don’t know why, it just is
I think if you took the practical theme from Lotro and the awesome fishing mechanic from Zelda (OOT) you would be onto a winner.
This time of in game activity isn’t always everyone’s cup of tea but you would be making a lot of your gaming customers happy ArenaNet.
