Digging up this old thread as I’ve seen guild banners are coming out. I saw them on the Gamebreaker Guildcast for anyone who wants to have a look.
I think they look ok and I heard Gary say that maybe the reason we don’t have cloaks is because of the Char tails, do we think this could be true?
If so why not make a special cloak with a split half way down so at the point where the chars tail comes out the cape would just split either way. This would look even more awesome.
Come on AN give us cloaks!
I just replied to another thread and had this idea which I thought could justify a suggestion post. Ok so we were discussing guild/player housing and I thought a good addition to the guild house/fort/castle could be a PvP arena.
This would be very customisable and guilds could start basic but then work to upgrade and expand it, eventually it could become detailed and unique area for guilds to fight each other. Of course this idea doesn’t have to be tethered to a guild house but I personally think it would be such a great union of progression and ownership.
What do we think?
Guild Halls should be apart of player housing.
For example say you can purchase/build a guild hall that is for 100 people. Each person can have their own room that they can add stuff to.
Then as a guild you can build stuff like farms for specific plants, a tree farm, maybe an underground mine to spend some time mining.
There can also be small training areas to practice different builds and traits free of charge.
And if you complete events as a guild you can add trophies such as a dragon head from jormag, a sword from AC, and other stuff.
Maybe add some mini games with mini pets/skin rewards like fishing in a pond in your hall or foot races, player dueling, and other activities and maybe have some G vs G activities to earn trophies for your guild hall.
I like your idea mate. I remember Lotro had something very similar, when you killed world bosses they dropped trophies which could then be placed in your house or the bigger ones in the Kin house.
I think for me they are something that could be such a good addition to the game, if done properly. So here’s my list of features.
- customisable so they can be unique
- contain trophies from your exploits in the game.
- have a use, so you can grow crops, store items etc
- the guild house could have a custom arena, the guild can purchase new sections and features. Over time it would become better and better. You can invite other guilds to it to fight Guild vs Guild. This would be awesome in my book.
I’m sure if AN did this they would do a good job, I’m just worried they are too focused on other things now for ideas like this. Hey if I was a coder, artist etc I work for free. I’d just love to get this into the game.
I’ve only played a few hours but Neverwinter seems like it could be what your looking for as players can make their own content. Maybe have a look there?
As for GW2 it is what it is, however I don’t see them adding content what the player can control like player housing etc.
insipid, trite, egregious. Sorry off topic but good words man
Yeah you makes some good points but I do think your being overly critical. These threads sometimes get so weighted down with long and complex discussions about what the game does and doesn’t do. For me it’s really simple, if I’m having fun I stay, as soon as I feel like I’m waisting my time I shut it down and move on.
I just feel like I’m getting tired of moving on every six months, Lotro, Aion, WAR, Swor and many visits back to WoW. I’d just love to be in a MMO that lasts longer than six months and has a team at the helm to really want to make a top rate game as opposed to a one hit wonder.
I personally feel like this is the first MMO that has stood a good chance of that and in spite of it’s weaker areas we still have some huge potential here. It’s clear the games engine is way ahead of anything else so the sky really is the limit. The strongest thing this game has going for it is that it’s free to play and so while we will most certainly get low population in launches of other MMO’s (TESO or Blade & Soul for example) I do think people will come back again and again.
I have to say while I never played the original GW the elite skill system does sound awesome, I wonder why they didn’t carry it over?
I have never wanted an MMO to succeed as much as this one and the reason is because AN have really tried to push the gendre past the set in stone formula it has been stuck in since WoW arrived. I do think a lot of players are getting bored because there is a sense of no progression.
Personally I play to have fun, I do different things and sometimes it’s what you make of it. Like someone said having their own small goals. I also play other games along side my current MMO and even take small breaks. I find this keeps it fresh and fun to play.
I also think a lot of players make posts like this because they are bored/burned out etc but still care about the game and so need to rationalise their feelings. I totally get this as in the last month Ive seen many good friends stop playing GW2 and it’s a bad feeling when people stop playing the game you love to play.
Apart from adding a long term progression mechanic (a carrot) I can’t see what else AN could have done. They have given us a beautiful and stunning game crammed with exquist design. The classes are fun, the WvsW is basically a full siege simulator and there are so many fun things to do, like jumping puzzles (but many players dont just want to play for fun). Sure the game has flaws, dont they all but I have to take my hat off to AN for sticking to their guns on many things they wanted to do, even when they know it will cost them some players.
I really hope we are still playing it in a year from now.
Awesome thread
I needed cheering up as a few of my friends have been moaning about lack of progression in Guild Wars 2. I do think now after months of playing this game there are lots of players who just don’t get it.
I mean look at jumping puzzles, sure you get a chest but its really about the fun.
I honestly think MMO players must be one of the most hard to please, impatient and pedantic groups of people on the planet. Nothing is ever good enough.
Well guys I think for now this thread has run it’s course. I will have another go in the future but in the mean time thanks very much to everyone who posted and contributed to this thread.
As always don’t forget to look around the world you play in, if its built by ArenaNet you might find something truly amazing
Take care for now,
Genophix
We’re still playing a game right? I think the OP needs to get a reality check and stop taking life too seriously. You can’t ‘trust’ AN. Really?
This thread is just going around in circles. In the main picky argumentative pedantic know it alls with a few reasonable people trying to say ‘hey, it really doesn’t matter’.
These dailies are fulfilled by normal play anyway so what difference does their inclusion make? I’m sure there are more more pressing or interesting topics to discuss.
I watched the manifesto video again and I really think they have delivered on most of what they said. The game does do many things differently,
- events that shift back and forth with different outcomes,
- (almost) no hour long searching for a healer before doing a dungeon.
- a personal story with meaningful choices along the way
- great combat that is fluid, visually engaging and fun.
- a game world so full of individual and unique areas I can’t list them here
- dragon fights that while too easy IMO still look and feel awesome.
- a million subtle improvments that just work so well, like how when I’m crafting 50 iron bars the game doesn’t make me wait for each one.
- a fully functional battle/siege suite where I can battle other servers for supremacy.
- jumping puzzles! These are all unique, amazing fun and a total surprise when I started playing. They really didn’t need to do this but we got them anyway.
- 8 classes (professions) that are all unique and interesting (and viable).
- utterly stunning graphics, effects, underwater combat
- FREE TO PLAY.
The problem is no matter what amazing things MMO devs do you can’t escape what your making. MMOs have to have repetition, there is no way around this. So having dailies is just a way of making players feel like they have ticked off a list for things they will be doing anyway. I think you aren’t living in the real world if you want an MMO where every turn there is something totally new. These are called single player games and you’ll do we’ll to find one that lasts more than 6 hours these days.
One thing I do know is that this game bucks the trend, AN have made an MMO that challenges many of the things that were holding back the genre. Here’s the rub, lots of people play this game comparing it to WoW (or insert your favourite MMO here). This is Guild Wars 2 and for its faults it’s going its own way.
If you don’t like dailies then just don’t do it, I don’t see how them being in the game takes anything away. Just love the game for all the good things it has and stop worrying about little things like this.
Heya guys,
Last month we started the ‘pre-event’ for this new living story and the concept sounds very interesting. Rather than a one off event we are going to be treated to an ongoing story that unfolds over the months ahead. So now we are starting month 2 I feel like I must give some feedback from the ground so to speak.
I drive my guild mates mad with my overly positive attitude but I’m really struggling to enjoy these events, I really want to but here’s why I’m not.
Like I said, the concept is awesome and it’s hard not to imagine what you guys have in store. I’m basing this level of expectation on the massive and excellent monthly updates so far. Yes, the pre-event did feel very light but as I kept telling people in map chat and guild chat who were saying ‘is that it?’ this was only an introduction.
So this month I was hoping to see this living story hit the ground running and really show off this new way of delivering content. Yesterday I had a day off so after visiting the NPCs in LA and Holebrak headed into Wayfarers. So far I’ve found an event which you have to stop Dredge coming through the portals and also found a buried object in both areas.
Is this all we can expect for another month? I’m sorry if I sound like I’m being negative but I’m more worried about how it’s been seen by other players (who lets face it are a tough crowd at the best of times). Even the event with the portals seems very tame in itself, why not have a small finale with a Dredge APC rolling in or some kind of veteran. Then when the tank is beaten you have 10 seconds to escape the blast wave.
As it stands I really think players we expecting far more. If you are planning more phases to this before next month then I really think you should be hinting at this. This far I think players are not enjoying it and I’m getting reports of ‘very boring’ from my guild mates.
I hope this feedback helps. As always we are still enjoying the game as a whole and love all the other updates this month, finally seeing my toon holding Eternity on preview TP was awesome… just need the real thing now
She lost her life, and now mourns over his death.
boom! Now that’s what I call throwing the gauntlet down.. Can anyone match that?
So far we have looked at very tangible themes, waterfalls, sunsets etc.
With that in mind I’d like to start throwing in a few, more emotional themes. These are going to be trying to capture a feeling rather than looking for something definite.
So this week I want you to focus on loneliness.
Of course with less concrete boundaries your imagination can have more free reign, looking forward to seeing what you find. As always please tell your friends and guild mates to have a go at this, the more pictures we can see the better!
Cheers,
Dominion/Genophix
Was just gonna ask the same question myself.
From previous experience when we get a date for something it usually arrives in the late hours of that day or if there are delays in the early hours of the following morning. Shame because I’m off work today but let’s hope I’m wrong.
Maybe they could add times as well as dates to the website?
Either way can’t wait to get started
I think the winner this week has to be Fsnowzombie!
Really awesome shot with lots of murky deep blues. Well done
I also loved the shark Defora, looked even better with the blackness below.
The winner in our guild this week was Euphoria with this shot.
Why are so many people moaning at having to work towards something? Its just another case of ‘want it now’. Sure the larger guilds can undertake the missions at a faster rate than the smaller ones but what do you get for completion? All thats been confirmed is added WvW buffs for the guild.
To me its like moaning at the fact that a friend is helping another friend to get their legendary. “Oh dear, its not fair that this person has a friend in GW2 and I dont”. (1) whats the rush? (2) whats stopping smaller guilds from participating? (3) Larger guilds are harder to run so they deserve a ‘headstart’ in the guild missions. I dont hear anyone moaning about the fact larger guilds get more influence for magic find banners and WvW buffs so whats changed?
You sir, hit the nail on the head as they say and I totally agree.
For months a good portion of players have been constantly moaning about no progression, no long term goals etc. You get some and moan even louder.
The more people you apply to a task the faster it gets done (apart from cooking), it’s simple and it’s fair.
As from myself and my guild we would like to thank Anet for another layer of activity to an already amazingly beautiful game. We are all looking forward to giving Guild Missions a go next week.
Genophix
Yeah I agree with concerns here, it does seem a little unfair but on the flip side maybe this is what we need. Surely a focus of Guild Wars 2 is to being a strong guild? This kind of thing would give players a reason to seek out other players to join their ranks.
Quite the opposite. This practically kills casual guilds, encourages people transfer from smaller to bigger ones, and discourages everyone from joining smaller guilds. It also runs contrary to the original suggestion that this content is aimed at both smaller and bigger guilds – it isn’t.
No, it depends on the individual player. If you want access to everything now with no wait then yes, you will need to transfer to a larger guild that has done the work for you.
If however you gleen any satisfaction at all from doing things for yourself then you may want to start expanding your guild or enjoying the journey towards what you want. I think the problem with MMO gamers these days is they expect everything, open access to all content regardless of how much effort to have put in.
I remember the big guilds in WoW (yes aim here for even mentioning the W word.
) you knew if you got in you were then running with a group who would give you access to end game content because they had put the work in to form a well structured guild. If you want to bimble about with seven players in your guild then fair play to you but why should you get the same rewards as a guild where all the officers spend hours of none game time every week running it so there are many members all enjoying prearranged events?
Because in GW2 influence is earned by the number of people you have not how hard you work. If anything smaller guilds work harder than larger guilds yet larger guilds get handed more stuff to them without putting in that much work for the return. Ironic isn’t it? That the smaller group that works harder than the larger group isn’t the one that gets things handed to them on a silver platter.
Smaller guilds work harder than larger guilds, how exactly?
Regardless my point is that it’s really difficult to run a big guild and keep your members a) logging in b) joining TS c) taking part in game events. Surely you must see that organising a guild with ten people would be a cake walk compared to guild with a hundred?
So that’s not being handed things on a silver platter is it? So, not ironic either. Sorry I just thing a lot of people are jumping the gun here on the nerd rage. Maybe wait until its out before casting judgment.

Me personally I don’t want everything being even to me straight away and the PVE crowd have been screaming for some long term goals, now you have some.
Have faith guys, this game is run by people who actually do listen to us so I’m sure it will be good.
So in other words to do guild missions guilds need to have bothered to research things in a tree that untill now has been WvWvW focused and thus mostly ignored by none pvp oriented guilds? thats abit lame but i guess not unexpected…of course smaller guilds are shafted in favor of huge guilds by this since alot wont have lvl 3 let alone lvl 5 in anything
ah well i guess we(my guild and other smaller ones) can go back to focusing on architecture lvl 4 and other lesser tech tree research instead and leave the guild missions to the bigger guilds untill you(arenanet) pull your heads out of your collective butts and realise not every guild is gonna be that far into the tech tree(and some wont even have started art of war since its been a waste of research to pve focused guilds until now) and offer something at lower tiers.
You may or may not have a point but you come across as a very unpleasant person. How about showing a little respect for other people. As always if the devs do something that you don’t like form a constructive and mature post. You might find people listen to you more.
Did I mention my only big fear is sharks?!
That’s a cracking shot and it being dark really adds to the atmosphere.
Oh I know rebreathers do actually exist but they do eventually run out
I think it’s important to address the timing here, if I was talking abouts a very limiting amount of air (time) then yes, this would lead to problems, lots of frustration and ultimately take away from the game.
What I am talking about is a very long time limit, one that takes into account you your wearing a rebreather (assuming its a closed air system). In terms of actual time underwater I’m thinking fifteen minutes (sorry I should have said this in the first post).
With fifteen minutes of air (time) you could swim around Orr, ML and the Straights and still have time to nip off and make a cup of tea
I guess what I’m saying is this, not to make the actual task of getting down there more difficult. I think just by adding a time limit, even a really long one, straight away adds that feeling of danger. That danger is needed in order to make the deep places of these water areas feel like what they are.
Of course I’m hoping the devs consider this change but I’d also be interested to know was this ever considered in the early days of the games development?
Thanks,
Genophix
Ok so anyone who knows me knows I’m an exploration nut, in and out of games. I have always wanted to see where my boundaries are, how high can I fly, how deep can I dive and so on.
If any devs read this I just want to say how blown away I have been with the amount of unique places I’ve found in Guild Wars 2. It’s especially impressive as most of these seem to be out of the way, to serve only to make the gaming world a richer experience and give you that ‘wow I never expected to find this here’ feeling.
Anyway I digress, my suggestion is realism, or at least a few nods to a few more realistic systems. As stated above I love diving in games and there has been something really niggling me since Guild Wars 2 launched, that is the infinite breath of air (rebreathers).
I’ve heard this being addressed by devs, saying that they didn’t want players to miss underwater areas by constantly having to swim to the surface, I get this idea and agree to a point but to just remove the requirement for air seems to be uncharacteristically lacking in imagination for ArenaNet.
To me part of what makes diving really deep is the fear of ‘will I be able to get back’ and the requirement for air is the principle factor here. I’m not looking for over the top realism here ie deeper zones cause pressure problems etc but just by adding a need to return to the surface you add so much more to the whole experience, this can’t be a bad thing right?
If you wanted deeper areas to be more interesting there are a number of ways to do this, cracks in the ocean floor venting bubbles, underwater caves with air pockets and even NPC structures like Quaggan villages which could have air pockets.
So what I’m saying is the underwater areas in this game are so well designed wouldn’t it be justice to give them context, like ’wow I really went deep today and found that amazing sunken graveyard (or whatever)
I look forward to hearing what you guys think and as always a word from the devs would be champion!
So this weeks theme..
Ok the theme for this week..
Into the Abyss
As I’m sure most of you will have had the odd swim in the sea. I’m one of these players who loves to dive deep and see what I can find. It was the same in Warcraft, the oceans were not even in the same league in terms of oceanic detail but never the less I did love to look.
In Guild Wars 2 I feel like we have been utterly spoiled in this respect. I have lost count of the amount if places I have found in the depths, places that have had much time lavished on them and as a result feel special in their own right.
In some ways I dislike the ability to have infinite air, the deep feels to reachable. In fact I intend to do a post in suggestions about this very subject. Anyhow I digress.
So this week I want to feel like I’m deep under the waves, looking into the dark (or light) of the murky depths.
Here’s a few of my own shots. Good luck everyone and tell your friends about this thread, the more people the better as we all see something we’ve never seen before.
Brilliant, thanks mate
Do you guys know how to attach more than one picture, doesn’t seem to let me as the new replaces the old one. Cheers
Defora how have you displayed three images on one post? I’ve tried attaching more than one image but it always just replaces the last one. I’m no expert at these things
Here is this weeks winner from my guild for the theme sunsets. The picture was taken by Yamaneko.
I think the shot that best covers this weeks theme is this one although I also think our shots are awesome Defora!
I’ve always thought the lighting around the Char areas looks stunning, many have a late summer kind of glow. I also love the red hues in the command rooms as the light comes through the glass and have taken pictures there myself.
Anyway back to the winning shot, well done, it’s a lovely image and even though you can’t see the sun I like how your do look like your about to embark on a long journey.
This one is off a vista but I think the hues and tones just look gorgeous, really is one of them feel good views.
Where can I find sunsets?? Ahh!! I want to enter!! Why don’t you get your guild mates to post their entries here too! Then pick two winners? Then it will be more exciting! And maybe rename the thread photography competition or something
I can ask them
I’m planning on being on time this week so Monday morning I’ll judge the winner. Don’t forget it’s not really about the winning but seeing what others have found.
In terms of finding sunsets, I really couldn’t tell you times of day. I kinda just see them on my travels. I’ll post a few more up for inspiration.
Ok so the theme for this week is Sunsets!
There are lots of gorgeous sunsets throughout the gaming world. I’ll show one of mine now and then bump the thread with more if it needs it.
Heya guys,
As always running late on this. We’ve not been getting much interest on this thread but I’ll keep posting themes up and hope there’s a sudden burst in activity
If anyone is reading this has any suggestions as to how it runs please post up. I just wish I could offer a prize for winning as our in guild competition has loads of interest.
So the winner for this week, just made it Defora well done! I’ve got lots of pictures of these windmills and the surrounding flowers and corn fields. It’s a really well framed shot and the rule of thirds hard at work.
cape was a major feature in gw1, they removed from gw2 before launch for glitching problems
I sense someone in the know
Do you know this for sure? This could mean they arrive some time in the future right?
Please take your tinfoil hats off and be reasonable.
Wonderful quote Regina!
If you like being insulted sure, to me this was pretty unprofessional, but hey i guess i shouldn’t be surprised by now..
That was aimed at the player base in general from how i read it, not great PR..
Oh please grow up, Regina is one of the nicest people on these forums as I’m sure you know so please stop getting all offended when there isn’t any need.
Consider that Asura lived underground and have short legs, mounts wouldn’t really make sense.
They have short legs so mounts wouldn’t make sense? Your logic just broke my mind!
The Asura love building things and are like the geeks of Guild Wars. I would hope any design for Asuran mounts would skip the obvious Golum theme and go for some type of flame beast which has then had a harness fitted that allows the rider to control it but the graphics could show how it is constantly fighting to escape.
An evolving cape (yay Spawn) would be kitten, we’ll be lucky to even get a basic model.
I’m seeing this word ‘kitten’ appearing everywhere on the GW2 forums, I’m assuming its a good thing?
I’ve seen lots of capes in lots of games. Most of the time they look ok, this fill a gap on the back of my toon and some have even had my guild logo on (cue audience ‘oooohh’)
Ok so my idea is we should have capes in Guild Wars 2 but before you zip off to the next post stick with me.
Ok first of all I’m thinking we could for the first time in an MMO have a cape that looks so realistic it would billow in the wind, fly back when subject to force (explosions, spells etc) and drape over objects it comes into contact with. For those who have played Batman Arkkham games this is the kind of fluid look im talking about. That’s the reasonable suggestion, now I’m going to go way too far as always (but I think it would be awesome).
Your cape isn’t just a cape but also becomes a living part of your character. While all your other items of armour change over time your cape ‘grows’. So it gains length and complexity as you gain experience and achievements. You could even have some sort of story embrioderd into the fabric which tells your story.
What do you guys think?
This is a compliment to ArenaNet in a way, I think everyone knows this games design makes mounts for speed almost pointless so in that sense I agree with leave mounts out.
But then I get to thinking, ArenaNet have revamped and rewritten so many other parts of the MMO genre how awesome could they make mounts?
No for speed, for the sheer awesomeness of being a Char in a homemade tank, a human Warrior charging Jormag on his noble steed or simply an insane Asura Elementalist bimblig about on his Phoenix thingymebob
My imagination could go a bit barmy on this one
This week (four days) we will be looking at flowers!
So I obviously spend a lot of time looking at the environments in this game and one thing that has always struck me is the sheer variety of plants and flowers that grow on them. I can’t ever remember seeing a flower in one area and thinking ‘oh they are the ones from that other area’.
Id also like to stay away from trees for now and they could be a viable theme in the future. Here are a few I’ve snapped while on my travels. Lets see what we can find!

We had lots of submissions in our guild this week and as I said there – the scope of industry present across the game world in Guild Wars 2 is vast and no mistake. Here are the winning shots from this week.
Heya guys sorry for that unplanned hiatus, I had a normal cold turn into a lovely sinus infection!
Ok so we’ve not had that many new posts but ill look at the ones we have had and then post the new theme which will run from today and end on Sunday/Monday morning. I know this is only 4 days but I’m sure you will do fine
I think the winner this week is Wolf! Awesome shot that just screams industry. I also loved the tanks posted by Meridin. More weapons of warfare really but I get where you were coming from
Ok guys, I’ll be judging these tmro morning so last chance to enter this week. So come on show off what you can find in the world of Guild Wars 2.
There is tonnes of industry out there, in Char areas and Human start areas especially.
Yup I was going to post this but obviously not just me. Lets hope they can sort it, took me ages that did
Wow that looks amazing! This is on of the reasons I enjoy doing this kind of thing, there are just so many places and things you can miss. Moo cube do you mind if I make a suggestion? I think that would be so much better it you frame it better. What I mean is more of the subject in the shot and less of the wall to the right. Could be a winner with that!
Keep em coming guys!
Yeah as Timebomb mentions learn the combo skills, like skill five on earth and then do arcane blast for the AOE stealth.
It’s also about timing, skill 2 on water fires a slow moving projectile which you can then detonate on the second press. If you time it just right it can do loads of damage. I’m a Mezmer by default so found an Ele weird at first but once you learn what you can do they are really fun.
Btw, I didn’t know they nerfed whirlpool? So they took away 2/3 of the damage did they?
