For a second, I thought no-one had made a thread this week, for two weeks in a row.
So, who’s looking forward to a fun day/evening/night/morning at the beach tomorrow?
I don’t want to completely ruin the surprise but you should hear something big from us in the coming weeks about this very topic.
Mr. Devon… I,m sure a loth of people are happy to hear that us boredom starting to sink in . Glad to see that some one actually care. Not sure what the surprise will be but personally i rely hope classes will get more weapon skills.. I,m thinking more of same line us the elite skills so each weapon have 5-10 sub skills. That will give people more unique builds to choose end will make the game more exiting .
Ahh well ..wishful thinking…
Skill diversity can be good and can be terrible. You only have to look back at GW1 to see a game where you had hundreds of skills to pick from, but people still only used the same few builds for everything. What they’re doing with GW2 – slowly making sure all of the existing skills are completely balanced before adding more things into the mix – is a much better way of approaching it.
Hoping to see everyone there tomorrow.
Experiencing the same problem.
Since the patch on the 14th, I’ve been unable to select to represent any other guild (I don’t know if it’s specifically to do with the patch, but it’s only been since then that it’s been a problem). I can stand down from my current one and select to represent it again, but I can’t select to represent another one (meaning I can’t access my bank guild at all). On a new character, I can’t select to represent any guild whatsoever. I can, however, access the bank, etc. on my current guild just fine.
Not sure what exactly is wrong with this, but it’s understandably frustrating.
From the comment regarding English-speaking, I guess you mean in the EU region?
Okay, when logging in today, I was stuck with the commander status in my boons/conditions bar, but could not toggle commander on and off (i.e. the blue dorito didn’t show up). After selecting to create squad, I was also unable to use commander commands. For the simple version, see the attached screenshot.
Possibly worse, switching between maps with it on/off didn’t make a difference – as far as I can tell, it’s stuck off, even after restarting the client, etc.
I would’ve been very disappointed if the server named after the ocean in which Southsun Cove resides didn’t do an event for this. I might hop over, abuse your hospitality, and then go kill some of you in WvW.
I’d be disappointed if you didn’t! The more, the merrier.
They’ve promised the point reset at the same time as the range nerf. Given that you read the 50% damage nerf, it’s disingenuous to suggest that you also didn’t read why and when there’d be a point reset.
Overall, given that this nerf will bring damage to siege back down to ~90%, ~60% and ~80% of their pre-buff original attacks, I think this will prove suitably balanced for most siege (no, when attacking with rams, you won’t just be able to stand there, you will have to move in and out, but your rams won’t just die in seconds just from one cart firing at them) except for golems. Arrow carts before the buff didn’t really do enough to hope to effectively deal with golem rushes (even with several carts, this could often be the case) and now they’re doing less damage to them than they did in the first place. I suppose to an extent, this may just be a conscious effort to make golems more viable overall, justifying the cost, etc., but by the same token, because of the cost, seeing a massive boost in their viability almost starts to border on feeling like the richest person on the field now has the best chance of winning.
I’m not sure how to properly address this without damaging their viability, except perhaps that maybe the option to buy golems with gold should be taken out? At least that would restrict them to either 1) people who either earned enough badges by actually playing WvW to warrant being able to use one once in a while or 2) folks who were just genuinely lucky enough to get them from one of the jumping puzzles/as a random drop. That said, I guess not many folks have gone out of their way to buy a ton with gold. It just strikes me that for something that’s being made much more viable and is supposed to be quite rare, there are too many in circulation and it’s too easy to organise regular large-scale golem rushes. Heck, as a world, I’m pretty sure we run at least a couple a day, often with the odd Omega or two.
It’s not surprising – they’ve been slowly reducing the services available at spawns deliberately to avoid people sitting at spawn doing non-WvW activities and taking slot spaces away from players who actually want to play the game.
With the split of the EB jumping puzzle as precedent, it wouldn’t surprise me if the citadel on your own BL eventually became its own feeder map with all of the services available before you actually entered WvW itself.
You do remember that commander is not a WvW-exclusive thing?

When I’ve experienced this problem, I’ve found that moving back and forth between maps usually (although not always) “solves” it, in that if you want it on and you select it to be toggled on and switch maps, it’ll usually come up but you won’t be able to turn it back off again without repeating the same trick the opposite way. It being on your skill bar or not doesn’t appear to be affected by this – it either ends up stuck there or not.
The next time I have trouble with it, I’ll have a play around with it and see if I can answer that question though.
If/when arrow carts get changed, they won’t be on the preview for that – it’s classed as a fairly minor change in terms of its scope, so unless it’s announced on the forum, there’ll be no notice before it happening.
Oh, just on the game client as you log in, on the forum and maybe even on the releases page:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/may-14-2013/
Considering they’re making rather nuanced changed (less damage to siege only) alongside working on some more significant changes (rating system), I’d at least consider it poor form to complain before the well-advertised next patch, which is all of tomorrow and even then wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t see any changes ’til the end of the month or so.
If worlds are mismatched by population, capping the points only exacerbates the problem – it sweeps it under the rug and keeps an unfair match going. Capping those points doesn’t change the fact that you’re getting your kitten kicked, so unless your only obsession is with the score, it doesn’t actually help you. The correct (and currently being worked-on) solution is to change the ratings system to make it easier for worlds to move between tiers, to more quickly push worlds with good coverage up and let worlds with bad coverage fall.
To put this into actual context, right now you’re complaining about this because of the current SoS/CD/SBI matchup, where pretty much everyone is already in agreement that SoS should be in T3 and CD/SBI may not be as strong as EBay from T5 even. How does messing around with the points itself, keeping all three worlds locked in a match that isn’t much fun for them in the long run (SoS with a guaranteed win, CD and SBI stuck fighting for second place), really fix the problem that these worlds probably don’t really belong in their current tier?
I don’t think anyone in this tier has quite forgotten that they’d be fighting over a game yet.
I suppose there’s still time.
Anyway, reset night was good fun although I’m not sure what possessed me to stay on for another couple of hours ‘til reset and then actually play for a quite a while when I’d been up to 24 hours without sleep to begin with. I guess I’m getting old.
After having folks flood SoS BL thanks to him, losing the WP in Garrison that we’d held most of the week, I’d sure like to 25/90 him.
Alternatively, you can see if you can convince ANet to do a 24/7 WvW livestream this week and go up to T3 yourselves.
It’d be interesting, but honestly reset night is one of the few times a week where all of the guilds tend to come out and play – it’s more of a fun social occasion than an important WvW night.
Depends on the class, really. If you’re talking about a class that has elites that don’t necessarily fit every situation (e.g. Elementalist or Guardian), Asura’s a pretty good choice for the golem elites.
Outside of that though, it’s all really about aesthetics.
Welcome to the world!
I overslept.
If you’re getting abuse from people, block and report them.
If that’s the only reason, this honestly doesn’t need to be changed – you have to make an affirmative action of allowing them into your party for them to be able to talk to you. Preventing partying up wouldn’t prevent people from whispering friends to coordinate – it would literally only serve to make it harder for people who set up duels, etc.
Below T2/3, organised EU coverage is practically non-existent, below T4/5, the same can be said for anything that’s not NA.
I’d totes forego a WvW update in favour of a “Running Of The Yaks” event.
I could be mistaken, but the mention of Outfitters makes it sound like it’s going to be tied into Keep/Tower upgrades and therefore is possibly just something you can set up within a particular upgraded structure.
Honest question – has SBI taken a bit of a break this week?
The only problem I see as far as EBay goes is that, from what I’ve heard, they’re extremely strong in NA primetime (three maps easily covered just with three separate guilds), but are very weak outside of this. It would actually only exacerbate the current problem of us being only average in terms of NA coverage, but strong in terms of Oceanic – I see us getting stomped by them in NA, but still winning the match because of their one-dimensional nature. Heck, in that respect, I wouldn’t be surprised if CD/SBI’s non-NA coverage gave them a run for their money. You can’t bring a one-dimensional world up into T3/T4 and really expect to do well.
Great fights this weekend SoS & SBI! Though I think some of my guildies backs are sore from all the badges and loot we farmed. :P
Also, SoS great defence on your BL last night. Ghed, you should feel proud my guildies saw your little Asuran Guardian as well last night and knew who needed to die first.
It’s funny you should say that – I was running havoc on your BL with a small group of my guys yesterday and we were doing okay (I think about 40 badges up v. two close-call wipes) until we ran into you and a few of your guys up at NW camp and just got rolled. Was totally “I know that kitten who just killed me!”.
That said, we apparently suck as a camp-flipping havoc squad – I’d hear the words “there’s a few CD over the-” and instantly cut off with “right, let’s get ’em!”.
Switch weapons in your inventory.
Honestly, with good coordination, it’s nothing. I’ve seen a group of 40-50 WP into a keep in the space of a second. It’s just a question of spamming the WP so you don’t miss it through latency issues.
The WP goes instantly contested (and the defend timer starts) as soon as a gate/wall takes damage. The only change there was that the visual marker on the map – the white swords – are delayed by thirty seconds. When it comes to WP’d keeps, you only have to look at the WP itself (whether it’s contested or not) to know if it’s under attack. In that respect, no, there isn’t a thirty-second window to port people in.
What is a legitimate concern that has been raised before is that there’s that second or two between the end of the event and someone hitting the door to trigger the next one where the WP goes uncontested – a lot of worlds, particularly ones coordinating over VOIP servers will take advantage of this to WP everyone in at once (or if they’re dead, to respawn more easily).
Simply changing the point gains themselves only does so much (and that’s only really for the ego of the losing side). It doesn’t actually change that some worlds have the floor wiped with them due to sheer numbers at certain times of day, losing vast numbers of their structures and they have no response to that – not being able to fight an enemy at all is far more demoralising and fun-destroying than what the score looks like as a result. If anything, I can see reducing point disparity being even worse in the long-run as that prevents worlds from moving up/down tiers when they really should be.
In all honesty, it’s why I do say “apparently”. I hear a lot about it, but despite being English, never even considered playing on EU worlds, thus no actual personal experience of what nationalities are actually represented.
The best I could do is go on the scores data, which does show extremely high ppt gain from the end of EU primetime ‘til it starts back up again. But without further data as far as numbers, etc. go, it’s difficult to draw an accurate picture.

SBI used to be T1. O_o
So much racism in this thread, only Americans should be able to play gw2?
since when was american a race
From a theoretical standpoint, “race” refers to ethnicity, of which “American” can be considered to either be an ethnicity or a group of ethnicities. Therefore the discrimination of non-American ethnic groups could be referred to as racism.
The more correct and easily-understood term would be xenophobia. Although -phobia can also be argued to be a poor term for it, cf. the term “homophobia” and homosexual discrimination.
In terms of the NA worlds, the issue is not so much coverage as it is the ratings system. Any world that has superior coverage to the worlds its facing should move up, worlds with less coverage should move down. In NA worlds (with the assumption that the majority (although not vast) of players are from NA), this means that you end up with worlds ordered roughly like so:
Top
Good all-round coverage
Good NA coverage, okay non-NA coverage
Good NA coverage, little to no non-NA coverage
Okay NA coverage
Poor coverage
Bottom
If it were easier to move between tiers, it’d be more of a self-correcting problem. For example, how many worlds are there that are strong in non-NA coverage, but so weak in NA coverage that they wouldn’t move at all? Arguably, my own world, SoS, should realistically be, at worst, bumping up and down between T3 and T4, trading places with a world that has weaker off-hours cover like YB. On the other hand, a world like EBay should be bouncing between T4 and T5 off of the back of its very strong NA coverage, but apparently poor non-NA coverage, moving a world that’s lost a lot of it’s non-NA coverage, like CD, back down the rankings.
Where this is probably actually a bigger problem is in the EU worlds. Well, as far as I can see, with one EU world – VS. Whereas the majority of EU worlds have either not been a natural choice for non-EU players, deliberately eschewed non-EU guilds or simply not managed to find themselves persuasive enough to put their case across, VS apparently has significant non-EU presence that no other world in the region can match. If there is a single reason to a more elegant solution to population imbalances, this would be it. Unfortunately the sort of solutions being mooted would probably take not inconsiderable lengths of time to achieve (tying scoring into population for example would probably require some serious coding and recoding), once they were even successfully agreed upon.
I’m pretty sure that’s the most amount of siege you’re allowed in a particular area too, so the scariest thought is that they’d have probably put down more if they could’ve.
Instead of renaming everything, it’d at least be nice if you could mouse over the location on the map and see which guild had it claimed (perhaps also replacing the normal tower/keep, etc. icon with their emblem?).
Some of those ideas aren’t exactly simple to implement, though.
This thread is starting to go the way of the old T1 threads…
Also, uh, maxed on EB? It’s been a little while since I’ve played in Oceanic times, so I can’t entirely speak for them (they did sometimes run a queue in EB), but throughout SEA, EU, all the way ‘til the end of NA, I’ve played at least a lil’ in the past couple of weeks and haven’t seen a queue on EB once.
We are, typically-speaking, outnumbered (although not Outmanned) from late SEA all the way through to mid-late NA.
(edited by Ghedoriah.4290)
Black Lion Mercenary Corps [MERC] was started off on SoS and migrated to BG. They’ve not been on any other world, afaik, but there are other guilds with that tag, yes.
Although, change our winning streak? We’d like to go up to T3, where we know we’re probably going to lose a lot – possibly by more than you guys do in a week – but because of the rating points, we’re only really going to manage to do that after receiving NA transfers in. To answer this and your query of how we dropped from T1 to T4 – we don’t really have any more WvW-only guilds to lose. Except for the odd rather small guild here and there, the only guilds left on the world are PvX or PvE – none of which want to uproot their members from a very good world and community. All of those major WvW guilds moved off for various different reasons after JQ became incredibly stacked at the end of the free transfers.
Funnily, it’s also what makes me raise an eyebrow when I hear that EBay in T5 has three NA WvW guilds in their hundreds – we manage what we do off of basically a strong militia and good community participation between the PvX/small WvW guilds.
I’m so sick and tired of this match up and the “it’s so fun beating you guys – you really put up a good fight” garbage SoS keeps spewing. It’s extremely condescending and we wish you were good enough to move up in tiers already.
Lemme break this one down for you.
Sea of Sorrows has faced a large chunk of the other 23 NA worlds in the months since release. Some were good, some were bad, some were indifferent and some were crushingly amazing in particular time slots. The worst? Well, even on our way down from T1, we faced a world whose standard operating procedure seemed to be zerg with everyone you have ’til you get wiped, then immediately map out for an “easier” map. Their average skill level was decent, their tactics were perfectly fine, but time and time again, one wipe – no matter how close it was – and the next one of them you saw had the Outmanned buff.
We give credit where credit is due. Both CD and SBI are still bringing their game and don’t give up after one little setback. You both have some strong, organised guild groups running around that wouldn’t be amiss in higher tiers. This isn’t a complete blanket approval, mind – the average skill level of your militia could be much better and some of the tactics employed are extremely basic, if not outright lazy. We don’t mind getting to be a little more relaxed about our own tactics (even if we know we’re going to have hell to pay for softening up even slightly if/when we do go back to T3) though, so it’s not the end of the world in my eyes that even portal bombs are few and far between. By and large though, you are better opponents than some of the worlds currently in higher tiers.
I have a lot of sympathy for your Oceanics as I know what it’s like to face numbers that are simply verging on impossible to deal with – I’ve seen worlds able to burn through a gate in a matter of minutes without even using a single bit of supply, at a time where we struggled to get a dozen people on the map to defend. If you’re not Oceanic though… you do need to remember that if you took them out of the equation – if, for whatever reason, the world only had 16 or 18 hours in the day and all of those players mysteriously disappeared into thin air, SoS would probably be losing. Not by a huge amount, but we’d be losing. This match is actually still more balanced in terms of population spread than it was when we were last in T4 when we had the likes of MERC, AFS, etc. full-capping the map every day before we’d go down to double figures in ppt for a lot of the rest of the day. At some point, you have to draw a line and start ignoring the score and just focus on actually fighting for your own enjoyment. When change in the tier is reliant on you guys getting Oceanics transferring in to balance it out or us getting NA transferring in and going up a tier, it’s just not worth worrying about anything other than those red names on your screen.
Honestly, I’d advise not bothering to look at the score. Yes, we have overwhelming Oceanic coverage compared to you guys. No, that isn’t balanced. But, unless you’re Oceanic yourself, you should be getting some fairly balanced fights to be honest – it’s really just that time of day that causes the score imbalance – we’re frequently behind on ppt during NA.
Coming down though, we experienced (and to an extent, tried) the same thing – DB has some pretty crushing SEA presence that were just too late for our Oceanics to deal with properly, so they’d get a free couple of hours to try and flip everything in numbers of 50 to maybe 10, after how demoralising it was for most of the militia wore in. Rarely we could beat them back with a bloody nose for long enough not to lose everything, but we’d still go down into double figures for ppt whatever we did. Over the couple of weeks we were in the tier, I logged in just in time to preside over losing the Garrison and the rest of our BL more times than I care to remember before then spending the rest of the afternoon playing cat and mouse, waiting for them to call it a night and push back out to retake those towers and keeps which, in the end, people stopped bothering to upgrade because we could never hold them for a full 24 hours.
Yeah, I know it’s painful to fight against those kind of odds every day. If you’re not Oceanic, I’d just advise getting your head down and getting on with it as you have a far more enjoyable and balanced timezone than some of your compatriots. Either way, I don’t advise bombing – we thought that was a good idea for about thirty seconds. Turns out it just kills your militia morale even further and makes it so much more effort to get people interested and involved either when something does change and you do need them back or it’s gone on so long without any change that there’s no point in bombing any more.
Do you know how the latency is for European players on your server?
EU to NA latency isn’t bad. I average somewhere in the region of 150-200ms. It’s more than playable without really noticeably affecting your gameplay, but some folks are iffy about even getting into triple figures full stop.
You’ll be steamrolled 5 manning a camp by 30+ far more frequently than in T7.
You guys get steamrolled in a camp by 30+ in T6? O_o Outside of EB, I don’t remember the last time that happened in T4.
If you’re looking for mid-tier, it’s not that much of a drop down, but I’d possibly put forward Sea of Sorrows for consideration. We’re a T3/4 world with the experience of having been in T1 for such a long time, but with very much a fun and community-first approach to things.
If you want to read more about the world itself, this post might be of interest:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/pvp/wuvwuv/SoS-The-Comeback-Kid-Recruitment
In terms of potential guilds that you might want to consider on SoS, I’d put forward ourselves from [SoV] or the good folks from [Fang]. We’re two of the larger PvX guilds on the world, although they have a slightly larger presence in WvW than us at the moment. If you’d like a little more information on them or any of the other currently-recruiting guilds on the world, feel free to take a nose through the guild profiles on the community site, http://gw2sos.com
I’m also more than happy to field any questions you might have – feel free to drop me a forum PM or a whisper in game.

SBI and CD are good servers to go to, they need more people too. Mainly CD needs NA.
I think CD and SBI need Oceanic. SOS always full wipes the map between 5-8pm GMT +8
Mmm, the big help either of them are after are from Oceanics (or getting rid of us
).
it was actually kiwi and not dragon
What’s the difference?
Again though, I’m sure anyone wandering in from other match-ups must be amazed when what is probably one of the longest arguments ever had in this matchup turns into hugging and making up.
(edited by Ghedoriah.4290)
In terms of balance, I don’t think many are going to advise a T7 world, let alone see many from those worlds encouraging such a move – that’s a pretty close-run race as it stands.
As far as T6 goes, IoJ and, to a lesser extent, SF seem like they could do with the extra NA coverage – although I can’t say I’ve had much interaction with their respective communities.
T5… well, both AR and BP could do with some serious help to even up the match against EBay. Both have scrapped it up from the lower ranks, so that’s probably a good sign of a fairly dedicated community (and judging from the earlier posters, both would welcome fresh blood). EBay itself is in a curious situation where it massively outnumbers the rest of the tier, but is still 90 rating points behind the next tier, thanks to the joys of Glicko. I like some of the EBay guys, but I’m hesitant to recommend them purely on that basis – for them to overcome that, they’d probably have to be stronger than any current T4 world is right now, which honestly does suck royally for them and any world that finds themselves in that kind of situation.
If you were considering T4 (the last queue I personally saw was a fair while ago and whilst I can’t entirely speak for SBI or CD, I would be surprised if they regularly saw two maps queued on reset night – certainly would doubt they saw a single queue for most of the week), there’s a lot of good folks on SBI and they’re probably the strongest overall as far as NA goes. CD seem to have the least militia, but have some solid organised guilds backing it up. SoS… I don’t really want to blather too much about given that 1) other folks have already made/will make the case for it and 2) I’d rather avoid the inherent bias towards my own world. There are only two things I would say. Firstly, that a move into SoS is probably going to be a move into T3, where we’re not going to be winning week in, week out like we are at the moment. Secondly, whilst I’m sure you’re more interested in things from the NA perspective, if you did end up considering T4 worlds too, I don’t mind sitting down and having a natter about SoS from the EU perspective.
Sorry for the double-post, but did want to enquire if you folks from CD were planning on another Fight Night tonight?
