The problem is actually that solo queue MMR works too well, which lets teams sync queue.
Didn’t you hear? The top players DONT EVER sync queue, they are just great at rallying pubs together for le epic vikterry!
It really says a lot about the community when, instead of running the builds that aren’t cheese, it continues to run any and all broken loadouts.
How to fix the meta? Stop playing meta builds until Anet fixes it. The game is so far gone, that maintaining the win-at-all-costs-take-all-advantages-all-asuran-teamcomp mindset is just going to drive this game further into the ground.
“Why would I run a build that isn’t as effective as X or Y?”
Because you have integrity.
But who am I kidding? This is the internet.
I’m a proponent of making all powerful skills have clear and distinctive animations that reflect their potency. Having fight changing abilities that are less recognizable than an auto attack is part of the trouble with balance.
Ele and warrior are great examples of how powerful skill animations should look, but most classes either cast their most powerful abilities almost instantly or they lack an obvious casting animation.
Please don’t add any more particle animations. The sheer number in 8 vs 8 is already blinding to any melee class. The game needs far less animations, not more.
I agree wholeheartedly, unfortunately this game runs on animations. (hence why Asura are at such an advantage) If they added castbars like the players want, there would be no need for the 4th of July fireworks display that is the particle effects.
Love that downstate
/sarcasm.Really adds depth and strategy.
Fixed?
Don’t fix it if it aint broken son.
Love that downstate, really adds depth and strategy
/sarcasm
Just one more thing that Anet won’t properly balance.
You guys crack me up.
Anything involving the transfer of conditions has always transferred conditions, and isn’t subject to the negative aspects of them. Why shouldnt a skill that TRANSFERS conditions do just that?
“Oh im blind, let me TRANSFER this condition to someone else.”
Putrid mark got a nerf, and now people complain about it?
Lets run down the list:
Warriors – Frenzy + 100 Blades / Killshot = OP
D/D Elementalist 0-10-0-30-30 = OP
100 Nades Engineer = OP
Beasmater Rangers / Trap Rangers = OP
Backstab/Pistol Whip Thieves = OP
Bunker Guardian = OP
Mesmer = OP
Now
Necromancer Conditions/Terror = OP
Can you all shut up now?
The circle is now complete, every class has had its time in the “OP” light.
Learn to play. No, seriously.
Downed state is ESSENTIAL FOR PVP. Since we have no healers, if you get spiked, you can get downed in a blink of an eye. With downed state, your teammates can pick you up, thus surviving the spike.
Without downed state, everyone would just faceroll all his skills as soon as possible, and the one dealing more damage in 3 seconds won.
Bring the burst/bunker potential down to reasonable levels. Problem solved.
Anet made the extremes on both sides so ridiculous, that you end up with someone going 100-0 in less than a second, or someone lasting against 3+ foes until backup arrives.
In essence, they intentionally created a balance problem with the gameplay, then implemented their mechanic to save the day. All under the guise of “deep strategy.”
Option to remove downstate in Custom Arenas
+1
/36chars
The leaderboard definitely improved, especially in terms of the stability of player rankings. Anyway, the problem is not the leaderboards. It’s more about the MMR that has still space to improve.
As well as the lack of population, lack of dedicated goals by Anet, lack of feedback by devs, lack of balance.
this game lacks.
well, u think those people who like downed state are minority.
i think other wise though.
for me, the ones who dislike downed state are the minority. It’s more like the ppl accept it as it is, because . . . what can we do else?
Ambush them during a state of the game
I love this “working as intended” attitude, it really shows how awesome the community is.
The downstate is a safety net, a crutch, designed to give players hope because the fact is, they just got owned.
This is the only pvp game that discourages players from engaging in an against-the-odds fight because this magic downstate bridges the gap between player skill and death, allowing lesser skilled players to remain in the fight. Don’t bother challenging yourself, the game will reward the downed players. Manage to overcome your own class weakness and down two players by yourself? Enjoy getting feared by one downed player, and getting to watch another’s puppy lick it back to life. Ridiculous.
Another thing, “downing” someone is probably the least fun term ever in a game where you are supposed to kill the opposing players. It sounds politically correct, it sounds weak. Its something five year olds say when they playfight each other. You might as well say, “I got you.”
As long as the downstate exists, this game will never become an esport.
Mark my words.
Remove downstate.
but this would make burst builds just eat through people in like 2 seconds!
Bring burst down to compensate.
but then the bunkers would never die!
Bring bunker down to compensate.
No more 2 second or less fights, no more 1vX unkillables. More emphasis on team fighting and not team fighting/rezzing/stomping/rallying.
Both extremes on the spectrum (burst-bunker) are at ridiculous levels currently, and it is one of the biggest things holding this game back.
The other is the downstate.
The Downed state is an extremely good Mechanic and removing it would be quite disastrous for structured PvP.
You can’t say that for certain. Just like I can’t (or at least shouldn’t) say that it is 100% guaranteed to be better off without the downstate.
But if we are paying for Custom Arenas, shouldn’t we at least have the option?
“If Anet did not allow custom arenas to have the option to disable it, it is because they are scared that it might gain popularity. If they have that fear, it is because they doubt the mechanic. If the creators of the game doubt their own mechanic, it strenghthens the argument against the downstate.”
what if, anet did not allow custom arenas to have the option to disable it, it is not because they are scared it might gain popularity, but instead, they firmly believes it is the way it is meant to be played?
i.e.
“downed state is part of the game. deal with it.”
Ah yes, the stubborn “Microsoft approach.” This attitude reinforces the idea that Anet doesn’t care about what the players want at all, instead they will just continue to leave this game in a state of mediocrity.
The game was touted as an esports game, but in its current state, and Anet’s trend of slow changes, by the time it is ever esports ready, the game will have been long forgotten. The downstate, as well as radical class imbalances are the two major factors keeping this game from achieving what it set out to be.
Custom Arenas with an option to disable the downstate. Watch the popularity of those servers rocket into orbit while the downstate tools play alone in the corner.
not gonna happen.
anet will not let custom arenas have this option.
I didn’t realize you spoke for Anet.
If they truly feel that way, doesn’t that prove that they have serious doubts about the mechanic?
I understand that they haven’t made the best decisions regarding spvp, but come on Anet, you’re acting like Microsoft.
hmm wait i dun speak for anet. let me rephrase that:
“i think anet will not let custom arenas have this option.”
there u go. its my opinion now!“If they truly feel that way, doesn’t that prove that they have serious doubts about the mechanic?”
hmmm what doubts are you talking about? why is that so?
anyway, there are several traits involving the downed state, and consumables too (for WvW and PvE) so removing the downed state will not happen. at least this is what i think. and i prefer it to remain as it is.
People have been asking for it to be an option since custom arenas were announced, because the community is divided on the issue of the downed state. Some like, some abhor it ( I’m with the latter crowd).
If Anet did not allow custom arenas to have the option to disable it, it is because they are scared that it might gain popularity. If they have that fear, it is because they doubt the mechanic. If the creators of the game doubt their own mechanic, it strenghthens the argument against the downstate.
But since they are silent on kitten near every issue, we may never know.

sure rofl watch the “thief is op”, “burst is op” threads coming np. just because some people dont know how to think in advance and setup downstate strategy beforehand doesnt mean it should be removed.
Actually, I agree with you.
The current balance spectrum has two extremes, burst (far left) and bunker (far right). As it stands both of those extremes need to be brought closer to the middle. As long as you have those two extremes, the idea of balance is a pipedream.
No more 2 second or less fights, no more holding off 3 bad guys by yourself until help arrives.
Then give us the option to disable it in custom arenas.
Any and all proponents of something are people who learned how to use it or can see its benefit; this is a staple of history, invention, and progress.
Nice sweeping generalization. Because we haven’t seen how the opinions of the most influential (GW2 Vets) can sway the uneducated to their side.
b b but muh fallacies
I didn’t attack any specific person, I pointed out a trend.
Custom Arenas with an option to disable the downstate. Watch the popularity of those servers rocket into orbit while the downstate tools play alone in the corner.
Someone needs to address that most of the biggest proponents of the downed state are the veteran GW2 players.
Why? Because they have put the time into discovering the nuances and ideal combinations in order to exploit the glaring flaws of it in order to make it work in their favor. The possibility of removing it disrupts the status quo of the meta and risks dislodging them from the top.
Someone needs to address that most of the proponents of jumping are veteran Quake players.

Why hello logical fallacy, how nice to see you show up.
Yes, let’s equate jumping, a mechanic that is present in all games, with a mechanic that is present in just one. A mechanic that has been debated since inception on its merits, that has divided the playerbase. I like that you poached the quake example from someone else in an entirely different thread. This isn’t Doom Vs Quake, or GW1 vs GW2, this is “why downstate is a bad mechanic.”

This by no means makes it a good mechanic. It has been terrible since beta and continues to be terrible.
In order for sPvP to compete with the big dogs, the downstate feature HAS to go. This game is going to hemorrhage before it ever has a chance to shine.
I commend Anet for attempting to add something truly unique to the game, because that in and of itself shows courage and confidence, and people respond to that. But the feature fails to meet competitive expectations. It is an entirely new level of balance that hasn’t been explored before, and for a game trying to enter the world of esports, you have to trim the fat where you can, and the community has chewed this particular piece of gristle for long enough.
Pat yourself on the back, you really tried with this thing, but it just isn’t going to work.
Remove it from PvP.
Downed state:
- interrupts the natural pace and flow of combat
- does not spectate well
- is not fun
- precludes skilled 1v2, 1v3 victories
- turns a close 4v4/3v3/2v2s into a whitewash because of ridiculous rally mechanics
- promotes instagibbing
- introduces imbalances that wouldn’t otherwise exist
DS should at least be an option on custom arenas. I’m willing to bet that DS-disabled arenas would be more popular than default.
QFT
You guys want more balance? Bring this spectrum down a notch.
Current:
Burst Potential |——————————————Mixed——————————————| Bunker Potential
Balanced:
Burst Potential|————————-Mixed————————|Bunker Potential
No more 2 seconds or less fights, no more 1 person holding his own against 3 or more until help arrives.
THEN remove the downstate.
Balance achieved.
Just give us cast bars so we don’t have goofy elongated Asura in tournaments.
The concept of immersion has no place in competitive play.
They have a disadvantage, and that’s having a kitten camera angle.
You see SO much more as a norn/charr ( field wise ) compared to asura. Even while downed you see more as a bigger char.
Except, no one has this problem.
Well I guess some people’s right to sound stupid is trumped by other’s wittle feewings getting hurt.
Don’t like trash talk? Block player. Reporting them is just passive aggressive and makes you a tattle tale child.
Mama….just stomped a man…
no escape from Tpvp
Mods don’t make you better. They just make things simpler, but in the long run they hurt you more then they help you.
I agree with the first statement, but not the second.
Gameplay mods usually seek to improve upond the default (vanilla) system in place, without giving an advantage. More often than not they seek to bridge the gap between player and system, because not all default systems work well with all the players. In some instances, mods will “break” the system by incorporating macros and such, putting less intended burden on the players brain, allowing them to focus on other things. These are the mods that gives people that icky feeling about mods in general.
This seems like a definite improvement on the combat system, but only to those it “clicks” with. I have not used it myself.
Obivously aesthetic mods do nothing but enhance (tweak) the visuals to suit the user’s tastes, so theres that.
I’ve gone from 50% to 59%.
The secret? Do absolutely no tournaments.
Im on my way to the top!
What’s sarcasm?
This man is your friend, he fights for freedom.
Malcolm X?
Wakka wakka wakka!
I would rather just die than have a broken downstate. Get back into the fight faster.
What’s sarcasm?
This man is your friend, he fights for freedom.
The rate of development is so slow new game modes seem unreasonable.
This game is going to choke on itself if we don’t get more game modes. Who wants to watch top teams do the same nonsense over and over again? Using the same builds, same class configurations.
Balancing is only going to affect the meta so much, we need different game modes so the players can actually explore and push the boundaries of the game.
Oh, and for anyone wondering, that IS sataarcoeny.
Hero of the day, I was literally trying to conjure up that youtube footage when I saw who created the thread.
In game, out of game, I can’t stand you or your wack name satarrknaeoy.
reintroduce disease and have it have a similar spread mechanic as in gw1
Something like this would be great.
Make it “infection” or “disease” and have it transfer a random condition that the player is suffering to a nearby ally/allies every 1-2seconds. Give it a good radius so it actually forces players away from allies, or vice versa.
1200 Range
360 Radius
60 second cd
Unblockable
Death Clock – A condition that speeds up the ticks of damage dealing conditions by 50%.
While I disagree with the Con that it promotes Team Oriented Gameplay (this is primarily a team game), I agree with everything else.
There is no denying that is unique and distinguished, but neither of those traits are inherently good.
Remove downstate please.
no, please. down state will stay.
there are countless times where a team member was downed right in front of me and i brought them back up immediately.
well it helps if it is their first time downed.
At this point the phrase, “Remove Downstate Please” Is akin to saying, “I want world peace.”
Pointless to say, yet we still say it.
I wish this wasn’t so accurate.
+1
If they plan on wasting my time, I just waste theirs back. I’ll attempt one stomp if it’s a 1v1 and if I see mist form or shadowstep unless they’re on the point I’ll attack them briefly to prevent healing and slash dance. Seriously, just die and revive.. so annoying.
If someone is down just off point, with no chance in hell of getting a revive (this happens quite frequently), and they choose to waste everyone’s time by using their prevention skill, I just leave em. If they start to heal, I poke them to interrupt. I basically make them take as long as possible to die, just out of spite.
The downstate system is one of the worst things in pvp i’ve ever seen. Games like Dota2 or LoL have plenty of instances where someone is simply ganked in a matter of seconds. And say what you will about that game, ( I personally don’t care for the moba playstyle, but cannot deny they are popular) it has quite a following.
Remove downstate please.
Today’s Most Glorious! : Whoever earns the most glory in a given 0000-2400 period earns their name engraved the following day on a special plaque in the mists.
Do fun stuff like this for most kills in a day(Deadliest Hero!), most points captured in a day (Hail the Conquering Hero!), most people revived in a day (Field Medic Hero!) and other things of that nature.
The next day, someone else’s name is engraved.
I am at 50% with only 13 tournaments played, 5 wins 8 losses.
lolwut?
This combination has one glaring weakness.
Two people working together.
