Hmmmmmmmm.

The Grove, I think. For a city.

If I have to pick a zone, probably Frostgorge Sound.

Mostly because I love fighting dragons. =D

1) You’re again assuming there was an agenda. There isn’t. There’s no ‘my idea’. There’s “ANet make the game you want”. That’s it.

2) ANet has said they are not, and never will, add PvP servers. It goes against the … ‘atmosphere’ of the game. I guess. Tried to think of a better word for it and failed. They also are not going to add instanced raids. Outdoor events are essentially raids anyway- they’re just accessible by anyone who happens to be in the area.

3) Again, you’re assuming I have an agenda, in presenting this thread to try to funnel ANet into looking at some ideas over others. I’m not. I’ve even said it before “Look at everything, only use what you want. Don’t feel pressured to make a change, make it because you want to make it.” That’s what I mean by don’t forget about us. The players. As a whole. There is no ‘us’ vs ‘them’. Us was referring to everyone.

I’m not even suggesting I have good ideas. I probably have terrible ideas. I’m not even saying the vocal minority has bad ideas. What I’m saying is don’t cave to the vocal minority just because they’re vocal. If they have a good idea, an idea that ANet thinks is good and goes along with their vision of the game? Awesome, glad it got out there.

4) A nitpicker, I imagine, is someone who tears through something just to find one thing in that something to harp on about. It could even be something that can’t be fixed. I’m not going to present an example, because you apparently like to turn them to make an argument out of them. But I’m sure examples are out there.

5) The whole thing is a letter of encouragement. There’s not been a change of message. Read the first post. Read every post after. What do they all say “ANet make the game you want”. There’s been no changing of the message. It’s been the same.

You can continue to reply(Of course you can, I can’t stop you, and wouldn’t if I could), but I’m not going to respond to you any longer because I don’t want to derail the thread from it’s track any more than it is.

Which is, “ANet make the game you want to make, don’t bow to people simply because they’re vocal”.

I agree about not caving in to the customer’s complaints about end-game and early nerfs to certain classes cough Thieves and their heart-seeker spam kills cough but I also want to point out that there are some things in the game that might need to get look at i.e. the difficulty in personal story seems to make it as if the personal story quests should be for atleast 2 people but that can also be looked as a good thing since you’ll get to explore other sides of the game incase you never create the certain race

I tried not to mention PvP because there’s a whole hornet’s nest waiting to happen with that. PvP is a lot harder to balance because you have to look at each skill individually, and how it impacts -everything- that that class does and how it interacts with the other classes.

To use Heartseeker as an example. Nearly everyone seemed to think it was overpowered in some capacity. But to balance it, you have to find out -why-, and how to fix it. Which sometimes may not have anything to do with the skill itself.

It could be that Heartseeker was average, and the rest of their skills simply sucked, so everyone used heartseeker. It could have been that thieves weren’t mobile, and everyone was using heartseeker because it was a short-range gap closer. It could even have been that the other classes didn’t have enough/good enough heals, so that they were always below a certain threshold. There’s a -lot- to look at with PvP stuff, so I decided not to mention it. I don’t really know enough about PvP to comment anyway.

I think Personal Story missions are too hard. Other people think they’re too easy. Even more ‘other people’ may think that they’re just fine. ANet has to judge “Do we think this is too hard? Is it because people are playing their classes wrong? How do we fix that if classes being played wrong is indeed the case? Is it because there’s too many mobs at once?”

Even Personal Story problems can be fixed in myriad ways. Say there’s a personal story mission where you spawn in five enemies. Players complain that they hit too hard. This could be a problem with people not avoiding damage. It could be that the mobs really do hit too hard. It could be that they -don’t- hit too hard, but that there’s five mobs there and collectively they hit too hard.

You could fix it by crippling the mobs to be easier to kite. You could fix it by providing a better tutorial on some things. You could fix it by lowering the mob’s damage. You could fix it by removing one mob so that it’s only four. You could fix it by adding more NPCs. You can’t rush into fixing problems, because there’s -so many- things to consider.

That’s why I’m saying “ANet, don’t cave in. Don’t bandaid problems. Don’t fundamentally change the game. Fix the game with the same quality that you’ve designed it.”

There is endgame in Guild Wars 2. Just because it’s not the endgame that you want doesn’t mean that there’s no endgame at all. Going back to complete zones you haven’t done yet? That’s endgame. You can do it at 80. You can do it while leveling. Doing events you haven’t done yet? You can do it at 80. You can do it while leveling.

The vast majority of the game, due to the downleveling system, -is- endgame, because it’s just as relevant as 80 as it is at level 2, because of the downleveling system.

And even then, there’s things that you can only do at 80. The very definition of endgame. Be it explorable dungeons, or farming legendaries. There’s more things, but the point is that the whole game -is- endgame, because nothing in the game is ever completely irrelevant, or even mostly irrelevant.

Thinking that not listening to the vocal minority, being a good thing, is in fact an opinion, you realize this right? Also, who the vocal minority is, is an opinion. We (that’s you and I) have no metrics to measure who the minority is, here on the forum. Arena net does, alas, you and I are not Arena net.

First it’s “us”, now it’s “them”. Make up your mind already. I quoted you there, to point out the hypocrisy of your message. Chairs that can be sat in, and health bars with percentages being good things, again, are your opinion. And here you have become the very thing you’re rallying against.

Lastly, just to be clear, you said: “There is, in fact, a difference between caving in to every little nitpicker, and realizing that some players have good ideas.” As a matter of fact, there isn’t. I just want to be clear about what facts, in fact, are.

You’re apparently assuming that the original post was made with an agenda in mind. “Oh don’t listen to these guys, listen to these guys”. It wasn’t. I made it because I feel like with all the negativity on the forums, ANet might want to read some encouragement now and again. Sure, it’s encouragement tempered with “But hey the game isn’t perfect there’s still problems”. But it is encouragement.

There is no ‘us’ vs ‘them’. It’s “ANet” vs “People who want to fundamentally change the game”. Like… PvP servers. Or adding raids. Or making legendaries more than 1-2% better than exotics. That sort of thing.

Yes, those are my opinions on what a good idea are. Everyone is bias in some way. There is no hippocracy in “Don’t fundamentally change the game, but don’t ignore all of your players to avoid a few”.

There is, in fact, a difference between caving in to every little nitpicker, every single person who wants to change the game, and reading those suggestions to find the ones that are good.

One makes you wishy-washy, the other improves the game in a way that ANet thinks that it needs to be improved.

That’s it. The title. Don’t cave in. Yes this is directed to ANet, but you can’t say that in the title so hey.

Don’t cave in. Don’t give in. You guys made a game, and you guys made a game that you could be passionate about. That you had all these ideas for that took years to get working.

So make your game. Make it the way you want to make it. (Or… continue… to make it? Whatever works.) Because this is your game, your baby.

People that don’t ‘get’ the game? They don’t get it. And they probably won’t continue to play. People that want to massively change the game’s systems or how certain things work probably fall under this category.

But at the same time, don’t forget about us, the little people who bought your game. Because some of us do have pretty good ideas.

Even so, this is your game. You honestly don’t have to listen to any of us. And I hope that when you -do- listen to us, it’s because you want to, not because you feel forced to.

Don’t cave in. =3

Worst advice ever. Go over to the Diablo 3 forums and see what not listening to their customers did to their reputation. Or you could look at the dozens of failed MMO’s out there. I saw posts like yours on every one of their forums.

Or you could actually go back and read what I wrote.

Yes, Don’t listen to the majority of MMO players, because we are all completely wrong.

Leave your game the way it is, market “leveling” as “end-game” even though it is nowhere near as rewarding, challenging and teamwork heavy as a “real” end-game, its a zerg fest that ends after 80 odd hours.

Don’t make a good proper end-game anet, that way you will lost all the whiny “hardcores” that make up the MAJORITY of this genre, that like an endless game that is fun not a token and ore grind.

Then lose your holy defenders 1 by 1 as they just abandon your game because the “end-game” (aka leveling in their heads) as ended and you have missed out on an amazing opportunity.

Listening to the hardcore defenders is the worst thing they can do at the moment.

Though I give credit to arena nets “Apple-like marketing” , they can market anything and get away with it.

“We want the whole game to feel like end-game” … which in turn defeats the definition of “End-Game”. if the whole game is end game, why is there no actual end-game, which suggests that the WHOLE game isnt end game.

Its brilliant marketing to say “We didn’t have time to finish the proper end-game, so we are going to make out we have no plans for one and lose the majority of our audiance just like SWTOR DID”

You should probably reread my post before you tell someone they need reading comprehension.

I’m not saying don’t listen to players. I’m saying don’t cave to pressure to change the game fundamentally.

Learn to read before you tell someone else to.

No, I don’t really have anything in mind at the moment when I say this, but the point still stands.

The game has problems. Those problems should be fixed.

But that doesn’t mean that they should compromise on what they believe in, and how they believe this game should be.

Maybe they shouldn’t compromise everything they believe in, but then maybe they should compromise some of it….. that is if they want the game to have any sort of success and or longevity (and don’t say selling 2 mil copies signifies success. Swtor in all it’s failed glory sold that many copies in preorders even before there was a set release date)

Just because they might believe in something or have a vision for it does not make it practical or even means it is going to work.

SWTOR sold 2.4 million copies.

3) What do i need to acquire to buy armor from Fort Marriner Traders? they have icons i have never seen before. Hovering my mouse over the price doesn’t give any indication on what to get.

It’d probably still be better to do it in different areas, though. Maybe 15min in one, 15in another, and do that for much longer than hour and a half, that way you get a huge sample size. And I’d try to pick areas that either don’t have events or only test in those areas when there’s no events going on, because I’m reasonably certain event mobs have higher chances of dropping things.

Magic Find

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Illushia.3721

Illushia.3721

I think the way magic find works is applying a percentage to a percentage.

So say you have 100% magic find for a nice even number to make an example with.

Baseline(Numbers made up for example):
You have 60% chance to find a white item.
You have 30% chance to find a blue item.
You have 15% chance to find a green item.
You have 5% chance to find a yellow item.
You have 2% chance to find an exotic item.

So adding on your 100% magic find, it would double your chances of finding an item. Basically adding the percent onto itself, because you have 100% of it again. However, if your chance to find an item goes over 100%, I think ANet probably limited the chances to find something. So I imagine that Magic Find would have a sort of ‘soft cap’ at a certain percentage of finding items, based on the tier of item.

So that 60% chance to find a white item would increase to 80%(? Based on if there’s a ‘cap’ to magic find, so you never have 100% chance to find something).
Your blue would increase to 60%(or lower, if there’s a cap)
Your green would increase to 30%.
Your yellow would increase to 10%.
Your exotic would increase to 4%.

And at the same time, I imagine that each mob simply has a chance to drop nothing. And that the ‘drop table’ is figured into a 100% range. So that it would condense down your drop percentage numbers.

So say a mob has 30% chance to drop nothing at all. Increasing your magic find would then change what’s possible to find on the mob, or even reduce the percentage of finding nothing, giving your more loot in the long run.

This is where my math breaks down because I’m terrible at it, but hopefully I can still give you an idea of the idea I’m trying to get across.

So say the mob has 30% chance to drop nothing. It has a 10% chance to drop a grey vendor item. And then a 10% chance to drop a bag(say a “Moldy Bag” for a Risen mob.). That leaves 50% chance to drop something else.

So of that 50%, there’s, say, 20% chance to drop a white, 15% chance to drop a blue, 10% to drop a green, 4% to drop a yellow, and 1% to drop an exotic.

Increasing your magic find could possibly affect a few things. So let’s use 100% magic find again.

Increasing your magic find by 100% would decrease your chance to find nothing by half(100% chance to find something, and 100% less chance to find nothing), so you now have only 15% chance to find nothing on the mob. 5% chance to find a gray(Since grays aren’t very desirable and aren’t ‘magic’). And say a static 10% chance to find a bag, but perhaps that bag has better loot.

So that leaves 70% chance to find something nice on the mob. 40% chance to find a white, 30% chance to find a blue, 20% chance to find a green, 8% chance to find a yellow, and 2% chance to find an exotic. But wait, that’s over 70% chance to find something.

I imagine Magic Find would prioritize the chance to find something better over something lesser. So the extra chance to find something of lesser quality would get pushed off of the ‘drop table’, so to speak. So 2% chance for an exotic, plus 8% chance to find a yellow, is 10% chance. Add 20% for green is 30%, then 30% for blue is 60%. So most of that 40% chance to find a white gets pushed off the table, leaving you only 10% chance to find a white, and much better chances, probability-wise, to find something nice.

This is all just a theory and is probably wrong, but this is the most logical way I can think of it working.

Basically having Magic Find past a certain number would stop decreasing your chances to find nothing(Since I imagine there’s a cap), but would still be beneficial because it’s increasing your chances to find better things. At least if it works the way I think it works.

I think they could take a few of those shambling corpses out of the more ‘populated’ areas.

And taking the respawns down a couple notches would be nice. ><

Thank you for the response, Anthony. My response to that would be that I haven’t recognized the inhabitants mindlessly continuing the tasks they performed in their old lives. Maybe it’s happening, but it hasn’t been apparent to me. If it was apparent to me, that would be great, because I think it’s a great idea. I guess there’s just something about how it’s presented that I’m not getting.

There’s lots of old “Risen Noble/Servant/Farmer/Miner” guys that are running around doing fairly mundane things.

Which is incredibly absurd and sort of eerie because they’re all undead now.

Except with Sylvari there is no such thing as sexual orientation and they just like who they like.

But ANet said they don’t have hearts. Came right out and said it.

So the Inquest was either wrong, or mistaking something else for it.

Random Sylvari Thoughts/Questions

A friend got me thinking during some RP tonight, and once I start thinking I can’t sleep. It’s easier for me to do so if I can get all my thoughts out. This might be long, so just stay with me I suppose.

1) How would Sylvari -really- look a gender among themselves? We know from ANet that as far as relationships and sexuality goes, they don’t care much one way or another, and they’re more focused on the other Sylvari’s personality/interests/goals/etc than their gender. But does that extend to themselves as well? How do they view their own gender? Would a Sylvari-that-appears-female really consider herself female? Would she be female just because she looked female? Is it something more mental? Something they’re taught?

I’m not trying to look at this from a real life perspective, so I’m not trying to get people to think about it from the way that normal human beings would. I’m talking about plant people with no concept of gender, where reproduction isn’t a concern, and love is about love for the sake of love. So would they have gender at all? Would it just be “I am Sylvari and I am me” rather than “I am a Sylvari male/female”?

2) We know Sylvari have many of the same functions that Humans do. Breathing, eating, sleeping, etc. Can these be suspended in any way? Like, could a Sylvari just hold their breath for a really long time underwater? Do they breathe in the same kind of way? We know that people need oxygen for their muscles, which is why we have to breathe, to keep a constant flow of the stuff. What about Sylvari? They don’t have muscles, so do they need this constant flow? I imagine they’d still have to eat, but sleeping is another curious one. Sleeping fufills many purposes for Humans(From processing short term memory into long, recharging the mind, letting muscles rest, letting the body repair damage from the day before, etc), but what sort of purpose would it fufill for a Sylvari?

3) We know that Sylvari can grow and shape plants. They do it often, they speak to plants, and Shapers grow their trees. But Sylvari are also plants, in a very literal sense. So can they do the same thing to themselves? What if a Sylvari wants to be taller/shorter/fatter/thinner? We know that they can just sprout new clothing or hair, so what about other more permanent things? Could they do one of those things I mentioned? What about other stuff? Like adding a second foot, or regrowing an arm that they’ve lost in a fight? Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve seen any Sylvari mention any kind of permanent injury at all. It almost seems like if they receive treatment quickly enough that they can repair to 100% or very near in short order.

4) What sort of organs and such do they have? We know they don’t have actual hearts, as ANet has said as much, and they don’t have things that we would associate with hearts- bloodflow, blood pressure, etc. But Sylvari still reference their heart a few times. One even says something along the lines of “My heart was beating so fast!” ANet oversight or maybe a Human expression for excitement? Or do they have heart-like structures that perform a similar function in another way?

I probably have more of these, but this is all that was on my mind right now. And anyone else can go ahead and ask anything they want. Might as well!

We cannot inspect other people right? Or not yet?

Iirc ANet didn’t want an inspect feature, because there’s no real ‘right’ way to play(other than avoid death and help the group), so inspecting people’s gear to see what they were using was somewhat pointless.

If you want to copy them, or find out where they got their gear from, just ask.

I wanted to call attention to it while still being funny. I think it was a really great idea.

Go to the lore forums and read the “Problems with Charr Lore” thread. It made me giggle in a few places because of the filter.
