I guess I assumed that cast times for interrupt would be reduced to be in line with cast times in GW2.

Hex removal would be condition removal.

The current issue I see with interrupts is that they are basically too hard to pull off. When I cast [Wandering Eye] or [Clumsiness] the next attack action by that target is interrupted AND any adjacent enemy is also interrupted and damaged. The Hex acts like a magical trap.

By contrast, in GW2 I have to hit during an actual cast ( and with one of my few useful interrupt attacks. Also, the target can’t have any of several invulnerabilities up.) This is very difficult to do reliably. That is the core reason interrupt really isn’t a thing.

I’m suggesting that GW2 is already set up for interrupt. The problem is that the interrupts do not work properly.

ANET could create an interrupt bonanza with very simple things like weapon skills. The “modern” [Chaos Storm] only interrupts in it’s first 1/4 second if memory serves.
If it and [Confusing Images] interrupted for 1/2 second or a full second that alone might make a niche for interrupt.

Shield 5 could make a hex for 1 second that interrupted the next utility skill.

So, a Team Death Match map, (the only one I’m aware of in GW2 PvP,) is not a good reference for talking about Team Death Match? I think you may have difficulty justifying that position.

Stronghold had it’s own queue. It was heavily used to exploit solos and make an easy path to “legendary.” This is exactly what I anticipate happening in a new TDM. So much for the separate queue argument.

Until recently, PvP itself didn’t have separate rules. That took 4ish years to accomplish. Demanding a separate mode with separate rules isn’t realistic or likely to be successful.

No, you can reference it sure, however your argument falls flat. Again, for the 2nd time, it’s not a good argument to come to the conclusion that courtyard as a map “aka deathmatch”, failed because all they did was release a map.

~snipped for brevity~

But anyways, courtyard simply as a map did not have what it needed to be successful. If you can’t understand that, then there’s no point of me rewording this into 500 different variants before you wrap your head around it.

So far, you’ve cited two things you say that TDM would have needed. One was a separate queue. The other was unspecified “separate rules.” I answered both, above.

I get that you claim that Courtyard was not an adequate experiment. What I don’t see is what you’re saying would have made it successful.

In the end, you still haven’t addressed the central problem with TDM. That is that it doesn’t feel good to get stomped hard.

Conquest mode removes that to some degree. It’s about holding points. When it’s about “killing” other players, it changes the emotional dynamic dramatically.

Let’s face it, we have enough issues with toxicity as it is. TDM would multiply them.

No, even matches do not guarantee wins. Still, logic suggests that you ought to win an even match roughly half the time.

When that doesn’t happen, it suggests that the matches are not even.

It’s been said before, but too many people in this game think they are better than they really are. If you are crap, you get losing streaks, it’s really that simple.

You’re missing my point. The function of matchmaking is to make even matches. Long losing streaks turn people off. They are also evidence that the matchmaker is not doing an adequate job.

To repeat; I have a 50% win rate on the season in ranked. I’m hardly an incompetent player.

While I appreciate the advice, my point was and is; Players are turned off by long losing streaks.

I suspect that the deliberately un balanced matchmaking chased a lot of people away. I personally experienced 68 straight losses at one point. Another player reported 100.

The lack of population is now forcing matches between very different stratum of players. That essentially repeats the issue of s2-s3.

By implication; ANET needs to be very careful to present even matches and even classes. Past balance decisions have left classes either too weak or too strong. In some cases, they remained so for years.

Your 50% win ratio in Ranked doesn’t really mean much if you’re playing in bronze. Players may be turned off by losing streaks, but Anet can’t fix that for you. You have to improve. I mean, you’re playing in unranked, during an active PvP season, with a non-meta core mesmer, with no interest in learning the mechanics of other professions, and yet you feel as though Anet is somehow responsible for your loss streak and that they need to fix it.

Oh and btw, your suggestion of Anet feeding you an easy win to compensate for your losses, did you think that one through? How is that fair to the other team that is getting stomped just so you can feel better?

Isn’t that pretty much what ANET did is s2-s3? They more of less fed easy games to “high rated” players so they could win streak and fell like pros.

No, that is your conspiracy of what happened, not fact.

No conspiracy theory here. ANET told us during s2-s3 that the games were deliberately skewed. One side was made with ratings significantly higher than the other.

Winning teams got even more rewarded and losing teams got even more punished. It was a matter of considerable debate and acrimony.

S3 was toned down and after s3 that system was finally abandoned, (I think. I wonder sometimes if that system is still in place.) In my opinion, it caused considerable damage to PvP.

ANET would have done better to stack members of losing teams into compositions intended to win.

It was ugly and I was unfortunate enough to get the map while introducing a friend to PvP. He vowed never to return and he hasn’t.

It’s dead and buried. May The Six vouchsafe that it remains so.

The Fractals of the Mists allow us to visit past times and places. Why does it need to be a dungeon?

What if, you could visit pre-searing Ascalon city or old Lion’s Arch? It would be something similar to the Queen’s Terrace or The Captain’s Airship. ANET could even sell access via gemstore item.

Special vendors could be there that you’d need to unlock entry to get to… I think it’d be lovely to visit places of interest like that and the Fractals give some logical pretext for doing it. Not everything has to be about fighting.

In fact, why does a fractal have to be a dungeon? It could just as well be a way to revisit pre-searing Ascalon or old LA. Maybe they could even sell a gem store pass…

Best suggestion off the top of my head; take an approximate time from the latest living story episode. Realize that the next episode will update the time. This new time may not be related directly to the time since the last LS episode.

-edit- @Moonyeti there is some change based on what you have or have not completed. Since this is a group map game… most stuff needs to assume you’ve completed to be consistent for the majority.

Why not compare anets previous game to this one? and the amount of content that was brought to the table? instead of blizzard use their own track record and when I looked at gw2 given how gw1 was when they announced I was super stoked I understand graphics animations etc are a lot more intricate and advanced visuals but they also have an enormous team compared to gw1 days just saying.

GW1 is linked to GW2, both by history and the Hall of Monuments. In my opinion, ANET would do well to look back at GW1.

I’ve been playing the earlier game intensively lately. It is, in my considered opinion, a better game.. with the exception of the Living World content.

At this point, I think gw1 is the better game and that’s sad.

There has been a strong trend to serve the highest end players.

Another trend has been to simplify and consolidate the classes. Chronomancer is more-or-less a light armored warrior.

I think both are mistakes. Raids please elite players, until they get bored, like dungeons before them. I struggle now to get a party to run dungeons even though I do teaching runs and sometimes take players 10 levels below the recommended. Raids and high level fractals will see the same fate.

One of the primary attractions of GW2 was it’s diversity. That’s being steadily shaved away.

Truthfully? Yes. An ideal rating system would make games easier after a loss and harder after a win.

Since that doesn’t seem to be achievable. ANET would do well to start awarding gimme games after say.. 5 losses.

Yes, yes I know … that’s not competitive etc etc. Consider this though; The ultra competitive system of S2-S3 probably seriously reduced PvP population.

After nearly a year of trying the ultra competitive approach, it clearly hasn’t worked. The rational choice is to try something significantly different.

I don’t trust big reworks. This would require only a small adjustment. In return we might get a whole new role.

The groundwork for an interrupt build is already there, it just needs the interrupts to work reliably.

Mesmerising Girl

Ithilwen.1529

That’s my point. Skills like [Clumsiness] and [Wandering Eye] set up a situation where an action during there duration (several seconds) would cause the interrupt. It is a kind of trap. The interrupt also does damage. Note that adjacent foes are also affected, something like Distrust.

(In GW1 you’d cover it with [Wastrel’s Worry] but there’s not a usable equivalent in GW2.)

That sort of interrupt build would be very dangerous 1v1 and in team fights. You know the big burst skill is coming, so you set an interrupt trap and there burst goes on cooldown. It would work in PvE as well.

I’m suggesting that a shorter duration would be workable in GW2 something like; during the duration of [Confusing Images ] or a flat 1 second duration. The framework is already there in the traits, we just need workable interrupts. I think ANET intended Mesmer to be able to play as interrupt.

This would allow the Mesmer to take on a shutdown/interrupt role in GW2.

Ithilwen.1529

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in GW1 learning to Mesmer in PvE there. We’re kind of an Me/Rt without the option of beneficial spirits.

Something that really stands out is that a number of skills interrupt ( and have secondary effects on interrupt. Some even knock down, the basis for a “nuker” build. ) There’s a really big difference though.

Skills Like [Wandering Eye] and [Clumisness] interrupt if the enemy attempts some specific action during the duration of the hex. They also damage foes around the affected one. This is something like the “modern” Mistrust trait.

Now, if our interrupt hex(es) had a window of say, 0.5 seconds or even a full second it would make interrupt a powerful and useful build. Staff 5 [Chaos Storm] works this way for a very short duration. It’s the only one that works this way.

ANET provided the framework for an interrupt build, but cut the heart out of it. If we had two or three skills that had an interrupt window…. Interrupt would suddenly be a thing. [Confusing Images] would be a good candidate. Shield might also be a logical choice.

What keeps interrupt from working in “modern” Tyria is the extreme timing required. The GW1 builds had no such constraint.

Absolutely NOT! Why would you even mention the idea of making CS not affect Elites? If history is a guide, It will happen without compensation of any kind.

While I agree, at the same time that’s still not a good excuse for letting an imbalance be imbalanced.

This was something the player-facing dev lead (Ghostcrawler) frequently brought up back in WoW: Yes, it seems unfair, yes this leads to a situation in which the class is now knowingly under- or over-powered, but if we have resources spare to fix issue X before patch but not issue Y which would re-balance the class, we’ll still fix X. Because it’s an issue.

Except that after the huge Glamour nerf, Mesmer was under powered for a couple of years.

Sure, OK, I can see dealing with being down for a little while to fix an issue. That isn’t the way it has worked though. I don’t see any reason to believe that if CS no longer affected elites… anything further would be done.

Asking for a nerf that major, in the hope that compensation would come with it, is not logical. I see it as a disservice to Mesmers, generally.

It still baffles me Ithilwen how you have such a terrible win rate with the number of games you have played. Like do you just refuse to learn why you lose? And keep making the same mistakes over and over and over and just never getting better at the game?

I’ve seen your play in game, it’s not that great. You spend way to much time making posts on the forums about how stuff is OP instead of thinking “Hmm how can I beat this”? I know you play some weird Mesmer build because you think the meta is lame, but when you lose this many games can you really tell yourself with confidence that your build is working?

Like legit if you cant figure it out on your own I will duel you repeatedly and dissect your gameplay/build. Because clearly whatever you are trying is not working lol.

I freely admit that during loss streaks, I’m a rotten sport.

Still, I haven’t asked a fellow player to commit suicide. Others have encouraged me to kill myself rather than be on there team. I refuse to feel bad about giving back as good as I get. Turnabout’s fair play and all that.

I’ve never claimed to be a great player. My win rate is currently slightly above 50% in Ranked and I’ve improved greatly since last season. This is despite choosing to play a core build for aesthetics’ sake.

And this illustrates the kind of attitude that has been very destructive to PvP.

Paraphrasing, “you should accept being hammered because that is your place.” No viable sport works that way.

A far more productive response would be the one taken with me: “Come duel with me, I’ll teach you to survive if you can deal with taking some lumps.”

I once faced a Master rated Chess player in a tournament. I am no where near that rating and most likely never will be. He stopped the clock mid-game, made me take a move back (totally against the rules… but he was being generous) and sat and explained why it was wrong. I became a better player and remain grateful to him for the life lesson.

The “upper class” mocks the “lower class” at it’s peril. It is the “lower class” that supports the game.
