It wasn’t possible to counter treb from bay so the defender have to go to the camp in order to remove those trebs. Yes there were epic fights about that but if the defenders were badly outnumbered low chances to hold bay.
This will change on the “new” alpine map with shield gens of course….

It was possible either with trebs or mortars bay even had mortars on the outer wall.
How about we have ABL back, play some more on it and then complain about what can and can’t be countered? ;)

ETA: Unless you mean trebs in a place where I have never seen them.

[PvE] Wrist-Friendly Thief/DD - Possible?

Yes, I have a powerball exerciser (which is quite fun actually), but what I have is not normal RSI. When I meant ‘arms slit open’ I should have mentioned that it was along the entire forearm, not just across the wrist. On occasion I also have numbness on the ‘resting’ side of the hand (pinky side), so it may well just be pinched nerves in the arms.

So far, staying away from computers (or anything requiring a desk) as much as possible for a couple days will counteract it just fine. But as a programmer/sysadmin I find it frustrating, and there are several other classes (Guardian and Ranger in particular) where you can easily build in the ability to take a hit or two, so you can pace yourself slower and not have this problem in the first place.

And yes that is carpal tunnel – go to a doc.

So I guess you’re playing staff.
I’m a former chronical carpal tunnel syndrome “patient” – I know how it feels when the wrist is starting to get too much – and staff is giving it too much. (My “bad” wrist is the left but I’m right handed and while playing staff my wrist became sore) – the reason for this is that it isn’t exactly well designed: you have to AoE too close so your wrist is pressed into akward positions and that will hurt after a while.
All other thief weapons are pretty fine but if you have an overly sensitive wrist and don’t know how to set your mouse so your turns don’t take too much effort (camera changes, once upon a time everything was fine) – then you will have problems with thief, the whole class.

I dont see the problem with people using their skills to destroy siege. What exactly is wrong with that, they are out in an exposed position vulnerable to bunkered enemies with siege. One skill that has random hits, would it better if there was nothing that could hit siege?

Back in the day my buddies and I took a big pride in upgrading and sieging up towers – we had the best spots for everything, then class range increase came, then camera changes came = siege is pretty much useless for defense purposes in any tower/keep – especially since it’s destroyed by one meteor shower – so why have it at all. I don’t really build siege anymore and I don’t really care whether or not it’s refreshed – when I come into a contested tower I might build an AC which is gone the next 10 seconds anyway – that is pretty sad, just think about it – one strategic element of wvw is basically useless. I don’t say that all siege has to be put out by offensive siege but I guess you get my point. And like I said; 2,5 years ago siege still made sense and some of it could be destroyed by players but most had to be put out with other siege. (It’s ok for cannons and oil, they have a much bigger healthpool anyway).

Counters have to work both ways lol. Thats why I said trebs should be built on walls, not of reach lords rooms, or supply hut (forgot to mention those). The imbalances with abl is with range/height when it came to using seige inside one structure to attack another. I want it to be more balanced for defenders and attackers. It needs to keep the strategic value, but cannot have the favor shifted towards the attacker who can just turtle up in a tower and build trebs that cant be properly countered. It was hard enough when you had one blob inside one of those towers, but when you had another show up on the other side, it could make it near impossible to defend.

I would think these are some of the reasons, the dbl towers were layed so far apart, but that took away all strategic value. I think making some minor changes, would help prevent the problems from before and keep the strategic value of alpine.

If it’s build on walls you only need an ele (or any other class) to walk up on said tower and destroy it which is equally cheesy and which has been different back in the day – I’d like it to somewhat be like that again.
It was balanced that is what I’m trying to tell you.
The other day; we’ve had a T2 or T3 SM – enemies were capping all towers around and my server had no clue that you can get most of the trebs (except klovan supply hut and red keep) with mortars from SM – so I guess in some cases it’s lack of knowledge how to get stuff out.

Dont think they can reach, if you have trebs on garri wall, they cant reach that far for nwt, but can go a little further for net iirc. But either way, thats just more height/range imbalance if roof trebs were useable in this situation.

Higher = farther.
Don’t know if it’s really imbalance if you can counter a treb from there. But in the end you can get the outer walls out with a treb as far as I remember (might be wrong and I’m only remembering NE tower).
And btw you wanted a counter so why is this imbalance (if it works)?

The reason is that trebs built up their have a height and reach advantage but cannot be countered. If you want to siege the keep, you should have to build the treb on the wall, and if you want to counter treb you should do the same, this would make it more balanced and force people to defend. Too often you have a blob take a tower, put up some trebs, and feel free to run around the map because their trebs could not be countered.

Garri’s roof. I never tried it myself but trebs from there should counter the trebs from NW and NE.
Only keep that couldn’t counter trebs from towers was/is Bay and Briar.

-Please remove all wildlife like the wolves and moas by garrison and north towers, griffons by bay, bears by hills, etc. Luckily they no longer rally people, but can still screw up targeting, eat up aoes, and put you in combat. It is just unnecessary in my opinion.

As a D/D thief I’m always fond of wildlife.

C&D is so much more satisfying to use on players isnt it? Seriously though they add nothing to the gamemode but rather can have more of a negative impact.

Oh yeah, if you can get through all the passive and active blocks that is – so leave me my wildlife
I’m sorry that you sometimes slaughter a deer.

of corse you will have to watch it and also the towers will have the same scale when there are defenders in and when not so you are not able to get 2 towers while someone is hitting your lord in a keep.

The same time your attacking team number is scaling the lord up the defending team number should scale it down for a %

eg. a fight 10(attacking)vs 20 the lord should scale with -50%.

and i think they need to be harder because you can just solo those lords in DBL. Alpine was harder to solocap a keep tower or camps. i mean i am speaking against most wishes with less pve in wvw. Because you cant even defend a camp any more. one solo dude runs into a fully updated camp kill 2 npcs in less then 30 s leave the rest outside the circle and you see ohh the camp is under attack oh its fliped already… nm

So the towers will just be incredibly hard, no matter whether or not there’s defenders in? If you bomb the tower’s entry it’s very likely defenders are there but can’t reach you – you get the bonus easy scaling and cap the lord real quick while some roamers of your team open the next tower – it is entirely possible and it would be a bad idea to scale a lord to super hard when there’s no defenders around.

The camps have been fixed btw. And with next week probably some of the power creep will be fixed as well. The problems wvw has got are complex, there is no easy fix.

Vs Ally roamers:
- Frustration of constantly facing an enemy map queue size zerg while missing 20-30 people and wondering how the map is queued.
- “how do they have so many” “where is everyone? theres a 20 man queue!”.
- I get that you want to do your own thing but with so small map population and queues and somehow an enemy being able to get more on tag your presence directly impedes our progress.

That’s true. A lot of roamers is great but if you can’t get all of them together you will likely lose against more organized servers. But the same is true for guilds raiding on EB.

These few days since reset has been a battle for the ages, full of hot blooded men of war, crashing into one another, sword striking on metal, shields slamming into shields, hammers swinging left and right.

OHHHH is this where all the warriors who play wvsw went?

None of this stuff has anything to do with any other classes in the game afterall!

And it’s only men, you know.
But yes, I kill my enemies in cold blood, so it’s basically true, I guess and I’m not even on NA.

One last try: When do you stealth?
When you steal with Hidden thief, granted you won’t get additional blind on that.
If you use BP and Heartseeker – blind included.
If you use Hide in shadows – has got blind in it.
If you use Blinding powder – surprise you have blind.
Also Shadow Shot has got blinding powder.
The only reason for a D/P thief to take CiS over Srej is that they want to roam the new borderlands and not being afraid of falling damage, other than that CiS is a wasted trait for a D/P thief – and believe me life as a thief without SRej is tough!

Don’t use CiS – that is for D/D, D/P doesn’t need it, someone here said it already. Smoke fields, Blinding powder and Hide in Shadows blind anyway, you don’t need that trait for that – rather use shadow rejuvenation.
The rest looks pretty solid although I would use DA instead of DrD or maybe even SA. Panic Strike and Improvisation might be interesting for small scale.

I’m on a server full of roamers – we rarely have any commanders. Works for us.

(It is highly irritating for enemies though) (or for people who try to make a zerg out of us – rarely works)

It might work in a group but still you have too little sustain to fight against another group.
Also the blind thingy: Ours is in GM because they probably didn’t know what else to put there but the access thief has got to blind isn’t that great or useful. It is useful for me as a D/D thief as it “protects” me while I get my BS or next CnD in = when I’m really close to my enemy. Not sure if it’s that useful in group play, but I might be wrong.
Also: Blinding powder is a must in a “spam blind” build Just saying.

It wouldn’t work in wvw – you can’t stay on an enemy for that long that you can autoattack and that seems to be the purpose of your build.
If you want to blind the kitten out of everyone go revenant, they do it better than thief.
I have no idea what the current wvw meta is, if there’s something like that, but wait until next week’s balance patch maybe?

i think the scaling system should depend on how many defenders are in the area. if you have a big blob fighting a boss with no defenders it should be very hard for them. the more defenders are in the area the “easyer” it should be. it would give defenders the oppertunity to get to defend the keep/tower/camp and it would create some more fights. the scaling of the lord should last for about 2 mins so if you are fighting with a blob and win the fight it should then be an normal lordkill and cap

“Yo, we’re about to lose our keep, zerg in Lord’s” “Leave it, we will be there in 5 mins while we cap these 2 towers of the third server.”
Not a good Idea, tbh. If you want to keep your stuff, watch it – common sense.

If it’s somehow consoling: I’m having lagspikes too – my pingplotter is running all the time so I actually see where the connection is bad, or better should see it.
I have a new router which doesn’t work too well atm, so i’m sometimes having nasty lags because of that. Then my internet provider thinks that throtteling is a good thing so one of the 12 hubs usually has got 100% packet loss – my game still works but it’s laggy.
Sometimes I have some minor spikes on ncsoft but that’s pretty rare but I do have lags ~2 seconds freezes which are unexplained. That in wvw and PvE and probably also pvp. so I guess no one is hacking you but the game has got some issues at the moment.

Please don’t or make it an option. I actually think that about everything people want to have in game “please please make it an option” as usually my own gameplay gets a lot worse when someone else wants some fluff.

I have heard, that this used to be the case before mega-server, where WvW affected PvE. I can honestly say, I would not want them mixed, I mean can you imagine how upset WvW players would be, if let say, The PvE players failed to kill to Shatter, and thus we take a negative for that?

I don’t feel mixing the two is a good idea. I would much rather see more WvW stuff being given to WvW players, to make WvW profitable and fun.

It still affects you, at least Robust you can see. You could ask a buddy on another server which is doing significantly better or worse if he’s got “the same” health increase like you. I bet the buffs still depends on the server you signed up for, no matter whether or not you’re on a megaserver pve map.

Just spoke to a friend who’s still on NA and he says that EotM over there is pretty organized – or can be.
In that case it’s played as intended and should be rewarded as intended.
STIHL suggested that WxP should only be given out when killing players – that is a good start but maybe not too good for roamers.
So maybe it’s another “wait and see” thing.

I think you’re making it too complicated. Simple is better to get people interested.

Those who get used to having those bonuses, will most certainly notice them when they’re gone and will be more inclined to participate to maintain it.

It shouldn’t be based on contribution. This is just a lure to get people into WvW and make it more immersive between pve-land and WvW.

We already have buffs and some of them aren’t too bad – and no one cares about them.

I did and I think both is important as it’s pretty weird that all we have left is HoT and the game we had before is dead.
Edit: Ok, got that wrong. Mesmer could one shot you, a Hammer warrior could perma stun you and the list goes on – I think before june there was no class that was completely unviable – they were pretty much balanced, except cele ele and probably medi guard. Mesmer was probably in need of a buff and engi needed an overhaul as their stuff was either UP or OP but never okayish. I really fought all classes and all builds and NEVER ran from a fight – had no chance against engis though, their elite was just too OP. Killed them easily once it was nerfed.
I played/am playing D/D because I like the set the most – I’m not playing this game because I want to win, I’m playing it because I love my thief.

The traitmerge is no good as simple as that, you are very limited in your choices how to play and a lot of stuff needed for unpopular “niche” weaponsets is merged with rather useless stuff.
It might work for PvP and PvE but for wvw it doesn’t.
Just imagine you’ve got different roles in wvw and create builds for that, then you’ll realize that the traitmerge destroyed a lot of the possible builds we had. Also due to the fact that a lot of the weapon skills have been tied to the traits, contrahery to D/P and S/D who have that stuff on their set.

Edit: A lot of embarrassing typos and misunderstandings – I guess I better leave for a bit and drink some coffee.

ETA³: I have to add that: I think Intra class balance should come before Inter (I got it right this time around) as (my favourite example) : 2 cele eles before June: You could just faceroll your keyboard and not win or lose – if that is the case and mirror players aren’t capable of killing each other then something is very wrong, that goes for any class as it shows that that build doesn’t leave an opening. You can extend that to all weaponsets a class has got, they all should be able to beat each other. I think if you do it that way it’s easier to get to an overall balance than if you balance D/P thief against Hammer warrior and so on.

The contrary is the case i believe. The class itself used to be good, certain builds were not.
I respect you for running power dd, its undoubtly the coolest build for a thief to use (and im pretty sure it used to be op too for cndbs combo)

I never ran signets. I wasn’t a spawn camper – I didn’t go to wvw just to kill some noobs. Most classes/builds had a very good chance to beat me. It’s a long story actually but I’ve got maybe 4 salty whispers since I play and 2 of them were during my one week as a condi thief. So yes, thief was good but not god (maybe that was a typo but I’m really only arguing about the “god”). In fact all classes were and most of them had more than one viable build.

And even if only dp was playable: Inter-class balance is more important than intra-class.
If we have leveled the playing field we can and we should start working towards build diversity. The first goal should be to create a competitive enviroment, not to make everyone happy.
And its not like this problem was thief exclusive. Talk to dd eles, hammer warriors, trapper rangers…
Our problem is the clarity of purpose. Death blossom should finally be replaced with a power based attack.
And ofc I want second shadow and caithe’s auto-attack chain.

Inter class balance will be impossible as long as the traits are merged – that went with the June patch. Intra class balance may be possible for all classes but only for some selected builds.

And glad we agree on that. I dont wish to go back to the 1v1 god class we used to be, but I’d much appreciate to beat 50% of all classes on equal skill and 90% on higher skill level.

That is maybe applying to D/P (if played right), oh and P/D – but not to thief in general – it wasn’t “the class” that was “gods in 1 vs 1” it was certain builds.

I don’t think you need help either. Some players, however, do want help understanding why people say they might want to use X and coming up with builds of their own. Some of these players are going to try things based on what people like us are saying here. I was hoping to ask you some questions about various choices because, if I recall correctly, you’ve generally been against what might be considered "meta"for any PvP game-type whether it’s DD, DA, and apparently D/P as well.

I’m not against a meta, I’m against metabattle because their builds don’t make sense – in most cases. Have recently been there and it seems as if they changed a lot of stuff but I didn’t look further so I have no idea about their current thief builds.
So no, you don’t recall it correctly and maybe we should drop this discussion as you seem to remember only half of the things you want to call me out for.

@ Dahkeus: Ok, yes we probably mean the same. However back in the day it was often me holding a point and my warrior and guard buddies running across the map to cap (I have no real idea of pvp I was playing wvw in pvp).

I think what the original post is addressing isn’t more or less PvE on the maps; but, rather, AI that works for the PvE that already exists. Surely you understood that.

As a necro who solos camps in WvW quite regularly, I don’t pay much attention to which NPCs are in the ring because I’m gonna kill them all anyway for the potential loot. What would be fun and interesting is if the NPC AI allowed them to be more proactive and reactive in their duties. Guards that actually guarded their posts would be a nice start for that; but, I’m guessing those centaurs will keep standing in their fields for at least 3 more years.

This shouldn’t be confused with wanting more of anything in particular. I just want what exists to work in a fun and challenging way. I’m sure other WvW players can agree with that, whether they like PvE or not.

A necro can just stumble into a T3 camp and AoE everything to death. Try an other class, although most are faceroll nowadays, and see if you still don’t find the npcs challenging. And actually a T3 camp has got patrolling guards.

Remember the BOOM when you leveled up? Isn’t in game anymore. I said it should stay when the discussion came to it a few months ago but I’m actually glad its gone.
(Yes, I’m still on topic)
When I was a PvE ranger and noticed that my HP would fluctuate a buddy explained to me that it’s because of wvw and reset. I thought that was very stupid (my server back then was called very bad and I didn’t believe they could do anything anyway AND MY HEALTH WAS IN THEIR HANDS!!) – I actually think that getting rid of all these boons and buffs tied to wvw would be better for the game in general.

I think something like a weekly dailies would be my choice when it comes to better rewards and getting PvE players into wvw. As if it’s done like that they have to become useful to get their rewards.

And actually they have map bonus rewards in PvE – you get T3? to T6 maps for each event you did, no idea if you know that. This was done for a few weeks then people were fed up and just do the usual stuff in Orr. Same might happen to “play wvw to get better loot in pve” people can either spend their time in wvw or pve and I guess pve players rather play pve.

That must be it. I keep running in to Dueller roamers. if I want to Duel, I’ll do it in SPvP where it’s a little bit (balance problems withholding) more fair.

Other night, same bloody thing. I was on my glass ele, just going about capping stuff. Some kitten mes starting dogging me (with food). I knew I could not bet him with my set up, so tried to avoid him, and he was Condi/stealth crap. but somehow he keep tracking me down. after killing me a 4th time I said F it, and change to my engineer. meat him again at a camp. killed him twice and never saw him again?

was he a Dueller or roamer? to me, he was just a kittening kitten. I never! ever started the fights, even when I was on engineer, he always started them.

As for the food – I never use food as a matter of principle. so if I lose, “well he had food” if i win – " Ha, and he even had food" its win win for me

If you’re not in wvw to fight and are seriously outraged if someone starts to gank you, then why are you even in wvw?
Ah alright, the food thingy – everyone who beats you and uses food plays dirty while you never use food so you have an excuse if you lose – makes perfect sense… looks the other way

A thief can win against an opponent if he outskills them – other than that thief is pretty much very dead – every other class can hit as hard as a backstab with multiple skills and they usually don’t have to work towards it like a thief has to work towards a backstab (more or less) – they also have invulnerabilities, more than one in most cases, passive shields/protection/regen, they can have insane heals. A thief is fighting against a tank basically – every class can do that.
So – a thief can’t beat any opponent in a 1 vs 1 (equal skill and stuff) – with that metabattle is right (for once).
And that shouldn’t be the goal of a game. “Well, you can play thief, but sorry you can’t defeat anyone – you can either camp in stealth and run away or evade and run away” – always a good design, eh?!
And yes, it’s madame.

ETA: Oh and I’m a wvw player – we actually kill each other in that game mode and I would like to have proper chances to do so once again. Unfortunately everything is tied to each other so I have to hope for the balance team to see wvw for once and not only “Well thief decaps anyway, doesn’t need a buff” – I don’t care for pvp, sorry.

And still they couldn’t out queue EB. GvG is a third group all together. GvGers should go talk to Anet about bigger guild arenas, they had a whole custom area designed for them. If GvG is your whole issue then ask for that versus say kill this its not what I want. Ask ANet for a map without any objectives at all where people can just get PPK.

We’ve had maybe 5 gvg guilds on our server and they could queue.
As far as I know most gvg guilds have left because the DBLs are really annoying, because all other gvg guilds have quit, and because the balance sucks. Yes and also because the arenas are too small.
But other than that, I’m T6 EU – a lot of people on this forum say that everything below T3 EU is dead and should be merged (yes, I’m chuckling right now) – so we weren’t overly populated to start with.
And I don’t have an issue – I don’t even know what we’re discussing right now.
Yeah it was you guys said that it wasn’t DBLs fault that all players left – they did, they did. DBL was the last straw.

It would be easy enough to move all the camp guards closer to the center, so you’d always have to fight all of them to flip a camp. But to be clear, you guys are arguing that you want to do ‘more PvE’, which seems to go against the forum’s current agenda of ‘less PvE.’

If PvE then let’s do the whole hog (had to look that up).
“You guys want less PvE” is a lame excuse for sloppy camp design

But here’s an idea – give me some npcs who don’t constantly blind or apply weakness and give them tiaras – that would make me love PvE in WvW.

only halfway populated map I’ve seen in the past 6 months from T6 to T1 was EB.

I have yet to see a consistent case where EB does not have the majority of players on it. Even when ABL were in play. People have different theories on why that is , but I haven’t seen anyone dispute that one.

It was the playground of gvg guilds (serious play no gvg).

Nobody is arguing if WvW is dying or not. But none of us knows the actual cause, we can all guess but we could be all wrong.

I guess I know more about that than anet.
Some of my friends left because the ABL was their “home”. Some left because they couldn’t stand the power creep introduced in June and with HoT anymore. Some left because the balance sucks, some left because there was nothing left to fight on the DBLs, some left because they couldn’t play this game like they used to and so on.
We now have only enough people for one map, yes, but that was different when HoT launched – back then we’ve had a queue of 50 to EB (T6 EU) – yesterday we’ve had a queue of 9 and that was the first queue I saw in a while.
And I already said (you actually quoted it) : “Wvw has got more problems than the DBLs – it has been neglected for too long and HoT was the breaking point.”
We might have been able to stomach the DBLs if there was communication between anet and us, if changes to the maps structure had been made a lot sooner, if class and zergbalance weren’t that messed up. It’s fine if you like the DBLs but the majority don’t – the reasons for that are all over the forums.
That being said: Anet adjusted the auto-upgrade stuff – that was a good thing. And in my opinion the auto upgrades should’ve come long before HoT/DBLs because they still need adjustments but it’s very hard to tell how exactly since everything else is unbalanced.

So yeah, I don’t think I know any real wvw player that has got a diamond rank, not even one commander who raids every night for 5 hours since launch.
I guess somewhere there are some diamond ranks, but those I’ve met so far have done that in EotM as all of them were easy kills.

What we don’t have is the normal rate of decay and I don’t think any players captured that prior to HoT. Another I would love to see from ANet was EB vs borderland stats from before, I can only state what I experienced. As far as ANet metrics, not sure they have shared any. Would love to see them but from a pure geeky curiosity, but it would be a bad business practice for them to do so. Which leaves all of us speculating. If you have a link, please do share.

I play the game, I have friends on a lot of servers, I play against other servers and since I’m EU it’s always different servers. To pretend that wvw isn’t dying is naive.
Of course you won’t see all of this when you’re playing EotM with its megaserver.
