Visit ranger forum, they still think we are OP cos of stealth and backstab.
Thieves said stealing was fun so it needed a little shave. To compensate for this, Ripper and Deadly Strike received massive buffs cos build diversity is important. Enjoy the fun for next 6 months.
Anet
100% buffed, that cleave will be so OP I can hear the QQ already
A thief enjoying an RNG factor in their build? Who are you?!!
Seriously, how can anyone enjoy the random effect this trait produces? Thief needs quick decisions to pull of their bursts and stay alive, having a 1 in 5 chance to recharge your skill(s) is just awful. There needs to be a purpose to this trait other than “ooh, piece of candy”.
I used to think the same untill I tried the trait. This “piece of candy” is a lot more useful to me than 5% on dagger skills or similar traits, which are just boring. Quick decision making is exactly what Improvisation allows for, since it changes thief’s possibilities right away.
Now, a 20% chance to reset all utility cooldowns is indeed really powerful, but useless 80% of the time.
Instead, having to build around improvisation will limit what utilities, healing and elite skills you can choose while making utility-specific traits much less useful.Plus, now that you’ve seen i know what intended means, let me iterate that in much earlier stages of the game the thief would steal a bundle, not an extra ability.
In that enviroment, the trait would’ve been just right, right now not so much. Thus, this is why i’m proposing possible solutions to make the trait interesting and useful, rather than a really situational trait that requires certain conditions to be met.
I doubt many of those who use this trait actually build around it. You don’t build around each of the traits you use either, just some of them.
If you take illusionary persona on the mesmer, i’m surely going to play shatter.
Sure it’ll improve any build, but i’d gladly build around it.
Apples and oranges.
You could compare more equivalent traits but ofc that wouldn’t help your argument much.
Perhaps thieves need to speed up their decision making skills if they think Improvisation is useless due to rng.

As much as I’d like to see the dmg bonus apply on stolen items, the trait is pretty good even without it. For me, it’s like something I don’t notice when it doesn’t proc and notice it when it saves me from certain death. And somehow I like the rng side of it too.
Animation-wise, Empower with a little cute asura beats all.
An Ode to Daggerstorm.
I love you.
<3 both of you, Daggerstorm for all the reasons you listed and you for wording it so nicely.
I think I ll just level a thief and guardian. Thank you for responding.
Guardian is very nice to play, it’s surprising how versatile this supportive class is, you can go full dps and still provide good support to your team. Even with lowest HP pool, guardian survivability is just amazing.
Thief also has good dps but it’s mobility why we are picked for pvp.
Thief will be still playable even after the patch, the thing is, most thief players are simply getting tired of the constant QQ and never ending nerfs. Especially those who play multiple classes know how much effort it takes to play thief decently.
I don’t think thief support is too bad… At low levels that I am, I use Shadow Protector trait with blinding powder and shadow refuge. This allows me to stealth and heal hurt players who retreat to the back of the zerg in WvW with shadow refuge, or use blinding powder to stealth and regenerate players around me when we have to make a tactical retreat. D/P allows me to blind keep lords with black powder, and I can blast fire fields with blinding powder for aoe might if I want.
Sure it’s not super efficient, but it’s fun, relatively versatile, and doesn’t require too much investment trait wise.
Most champ/legendary level mobs have Unshakable buff that reduces blind effectiveness to 10%. It’s better to save initiative for something else.
For weapon set like D/D why would anyone go full condi if this trait was available.
Condi build’s source of dmg: bleeds from DB
Power build’s source of dmg: direct dmg from aa/backstab/hs/cnd AND relatively high bleed dmg.
While this trait would be fine for P/D (improved dmg for power P/D via bleeds, full condi would still do more condi dmg cos of torment on 3), on a set with bleeds as the only source of condi dmg, the trait would simply cause all condi builds shift to power. Ofc that would depend on the scaling.
Ironically the bottom classes are the two which many people claim to be really good for open world solos (pet AI is most likely the culprit). I can tell you from experience they are fine in open world but not better.
You see the best part of ranger and probably necromancer is that you can do other things while playing like watching a movie you do not need 50% attention on the game with them at least with ranger.
In the ranger’s case, that’s the worst part. It promotes bad gameplay and playstyles. Longbow, bear and full signet skill bar worked in open PvE, so that’s what inexperienced people bring into dungeons when joining pug groups aswell. The sole reason people hate the class.
+1000000000000
I’ve seen something like this happen couple of times in past few weeks, although not to so many people, usually only to me or 1-2 other people. Seems like when enemy you hit goes down or full death, the game updates your position or whatever and teleports you up/down somewhere near the enemy. Usually it happens when I stomp someone on wall and end up being “pushed” off it down on the ground.
In MMO, there is one kind of player who only play 1 toon per game.
If you are crazy… that make us both. lol I’m Beta player thief. For 10 years I cant play Alt in any MMO. (my alt never get max lv if try)
btw nerfed after nerfed, I still feel effective.
Idk may be I just try to have fun, not try to conquer Tyria and win every battle with my toon.
I am an alt-maniac, have all classes except necro which I play maybe once in a month to test stuff out and then I go back to my thieves. Got eight of them.
Bugs that don’t get fixed, balance every 6 months…. and as long as the point of pvp mode is avoidance of pvp (bunkering), it is nowhere near esports.
In my opinion this is a fairly good burst build for roaming that also grants some survival capability.
Credits to Yishis
No offense, but I don’t think that’s a very good build. It’s effective at killing bad players, people who aren’t paying attentions and people who get tired of fighting you. It’s unfavored against most serious roamers/pvpers because it’s predictable as hell and doesn’t put a lot of pressure(lack of poison on steal for example, is really crucial). It was a bit better pre-ferocity, but right now this build is outdated, IMO. You may be able to kill zerker bearbow rangers and think “oh wow this has so much burst” but the main way to win with this build is by dragging out fights and resetting until the other player makes a mistake or has no cooldowns, I wouldn’t recommend it.
d/d in general is a bit of a bad spec right now, as it does almost nothing better than d/p except straight up one shot burst damage.
Are there better builds than this one? Yes
Would I recommend more bursty builds to a new player? No. Especially since he said he feels like an easy target.
Majority of wvw thieves put 6pts in SA even now.
“spam 1 through 5, swap, repeat” would become even more proeminent.
This 1 to 5 spam is unique ability of warriors, don’t take that snowflake thing from us please! I want to spam!
But more seriously, 5 seconds is really short time to be honest. I would even argue it’s a bit too powerful for warriors already, I don’t want to see thieves and what not swapping like warriors do.
That is a rediculous statement. The only class that would not benefit from faster swapping (or where it would not be OP) is thief since the cooldowns of both weaponsets are shared through the initiative system. Spam all your skills in 1 weapon set means no skills of the other set can be used till initiative has regenerated!
Just a note:
With quick pocket thiefs would abuse the 5 seconds swap, because they can use the same skill after changing weapons unlike other professions.
That’s not so hard to change (hint: add cooldown), it’s actually the smallest problem that would arise with lower wep swap cooldown.
Saying that any arguments condisering 1vs1 or roaming is invalid cus devs don’t support this aspect of game is total bs. 1vs1 happens more often than just in roaming and shouldn’t not be overlooked just because condi specs are still useless in other game modes due to either technical issues (condi stack limit) or due to lack of dev’s attention.
And I am quite serious on Soldier’s gear out-damaging Dire. Look around, I’m sure you can find some of the numerous tests.
Well, then you are most welcome to post a video of yourself rolling over condi specs with soldiers gear. I am sure you’ll find some p/d thief out there willing to test it with you.
@Cygnus
They do need some extra sustain but not as much as dire gives. That’s why the older gear for condi specs have either toughness or vitality on them. Dire is the result of dev’s being lazy to actually improve same basic issues with condi builds, giving players dire and +40% condi duration food was the easiest option how to attract players to condi builds.
(edited by Jayden Ennok.3687)
From what I tested before, full dire worked better for me than hybrid builds. Don’t forget direct dmg on pistol aa is just meh, you won’t make much use of power. For precision, there are some nice sigils that proc on crits but I think the added benefit is just outweighed by the survivability you lose when not using full dire. Some other classes need precision for more dmg in condi builds, thief is not one of them.
For runes, krait if you want something cheap and still effective. Perplexity runes require a bit of skill to actually interrupt the opponent but in return they offer better burst than krait. You interrupt even with basilik, you don’t necessarily need sleight of hand. Even with so many condi builds in roaming nowadays, the most challenging to fight are the interrupt builds with perplex runes and I’ve met very few people who can play them well. Scorp wire is quite nice for these builds.
i have nothing against condis if they weren’t so “usually”…tanky.
They have to be. They have to survive long enough for their damage to actually happen.
This is a lie. It’s not the way, that condi speccs have to facetank the enemy. And while using Cc, invuls, stealth and oor, your conditions are running. A power specc can’t do damage while using this stuff. It’s Cc Meta, which is cool, but condi builds profits to much out of it.
No, when you’re dodging, invulnerable, stealth, etc., you are not doing damage with conditions. The attacks you have already landed are ticking. No new damage is being dealt.
Condition specs don’t necessarily have to facetank (with exception of necros, because they facetank everything regardless of spec), but they do have to survive their opponents cooldowns multiple times more than a glass cannon Power spec does simply because it takes much more time to kill. As such, they end up having more incoming damage over the course of a fight.
TLDR: Durability isn’t a luxury of condition builds. It’s a necessity.
But not in the form of dire gear.
Is there any logical reason they should do this. If not why even bring it up. If so it better be a good one cause they’d have to redo the whole elementalist class for this one change.
From my POV as a thief, simply cos I would like a more varied playstyle. Faster wep swap wouldn’t allow me to use more wep skills as thieves have global resource for this. The only benefit thieves would have is the possibility for more cross wep sets combos = more fun (for me).
Even though I despise condi builds, I think this idea is simply unfair. Condis don’t crit, it’s DoT and can be cleansed. Try to cleanse 10k backstab or evis :P
The rune doesn’t stack with fast hands.
Montages are great for entertainment and quick fights make for good entertainment.
Because of this; I would assume that a lot of player montages show a higher amount of thief fights because the majority of the thieves roaming out in wvw are built like glass.^Absolutely pure assumption with no science behind it what-so-ever

Also, if the video was made by a thief it likely has a lot of thief kills in it. Thieves tend to have egos, I killed a thief on my ranger last night and he hunted me for hours after that ^^
Can confirm.
I am an egotistical thief that will consistently hunt someone if they make me mad.
One could argue whether this is a result of playing thief or if the class attracts certain type of people.
I often hunt down those that killed me earlier, to make them pay for testing their weapons on me so inappropriately that I died. It works just like tunnel vision and can end up with same results – I want that guy dead so badly, I kamikaze and die again :/
Good day and I think that other people have a problem with a thief in PvP.Thief used in PvP BackStap and then just spamming heartseaker which gives a very large damage .Byl I would like if the thief has weakened a bit because it is quite a nuisance when you someone is a thief teleports can backstap and then just uses heartseaker. I saw that this combination removes the warrior who plays it to keep in team fights so easy. I hope you understand me

How do we expect the game to continue growing in playerbase and playerskill if we shoot down every player that posts a thread we disagree with?
I will admit I’m also tired of the “class xyz is OP! NERF!” threads, although, if we use the time we spend making replies to be constructive rather than “just l2p noob” we might get less of them.
Haven’t worked so far (2yrs lol) so why do you think it might change.
@OP
Lukasi, zkus Thief v pvp a uvidis, ze to neni takova sranda, jak si myslis.
When I was trying P/P with D/D, black powder and hs always took people by surprise. Everyone expects thieves to use 1 wep set for most of the fight and well, that’s cos it’s true. Thieves use their sb only when they need to run away, poison downed or aoe someone’s SR. I get immob’d from stealth with sb once every billion years and it’s usually only people who play pvp and just visit wvw.
I want shorter wep swap cd simply because it means I could use the surprise element more often and it would also make fighting other thieves less boring. Maybe I’d even slot sb again for this.
In the end I believe it’ll make thieves to use their heads a bit instead of a simple spam this and that with closed eyes – cause it works!
:P
Said perplex engi.
I recently bought a second account for the express purpose of touring other servers (EU or NA doesn’t really matter) and seeing their WvW
So, advise me on which servers I should visit first. I’ve already been to ET (was a bit of a nightmare) and am currently on DH
I’m just deleting characters to move servers so I’ll be coming over with a level 2 XD
I don’t think deleting all chars still works.
Wait what
Did some just call the 5 6 0 0 3 full signet OP?
No, he called it exploit. xD
Mostly due to an overreaction to crit damage nerf.
I wouldn’t call it overraction. Most of those that migrated to condi builds simply can’t play power buids anymore. High burst carried them previously and now to achieve decent burst, thieves have to go full paper. With condi they can do high dmg AND have high survivability too.
Female asura thieves are scary.
Im one of those
They are tiny, cute and deadly, perfect combination. I have one as well, I just somehow failed to make her look cute.
Female charrs are pretty scary too, I made one just to “test” the race and she is so akward, clunky and funny, I had to keep her just for the giggles.
Sylvari males look cool until you see them run :/
Female asura thieves are scary.
Everytime I hear sic em! or I am lucky enough to step on a stealth trap and see the reveal debuff on my buff bar, my daggers cringe and all I can think about is…..
WHERE IS MY DPS?!
Ty devs for giving other classes the tool to laugh into my face cos my offence is gone and usually condis are melting me at the same time. But at least dagger aa will cleave xD
That would be in your #2 spot. Heartseekers for 6k are insane…
Sure that kind of heartseeker is nice, too bad the target needs to be 25% HP or lower for that.
sigil to crit on weaponswap would be op
Wep swap sigils have 9s icd.

Actually, if the post is patronizing enough, it might get closed by a moderator. At least then we know someone visits these forums :P
No, it’s unbalanced, thief should have cooldowns as well.
/sarcasm
Are you for real?I think the OP meant it the other way.
I think it would be cool if we had no cd on weaponswap (sigils etc have internal cooldowns anyway). Or maybe just lower the cd on weaponswap. We can’t, like other classes, equip for example 2 sets of the same weapon and use the same skills 2 times in a row. Having no cd on weaponswap would make some interesting tactics possible, and initiative might keep it from being op.
I would love no/lower cd on wep swap. The craziest stuff is possible with wep swap during a combo, imagine even more possibilities. :o
Your tier must have been the unlucky one to get their matchup hosted on the laggy EB map. Should be fine by next week, unless you guys get that specific server again.
This has nothing to do with match ups server, my main is on Vabbi and I was lagging out every 5-10mins yesterday, same on Aurora Glade with my 2nd account.
Condition Mesmers will be an even harder counter to Thief now, since we can blow up so many more of there clones while trying to dps them.
This. I use daggers for high single target dps, in some situations cleave is not so great.
Nice footage here and thanks jesus , finally a WvW video from a critical strikes thief . Those types of thieves miss me so much
PS : sadly , no 720p / 1080 :p
Yeah, I don’t particularly like carried builds such as evasion S/D :[ . And thank you
Doesn’t matter what build you use, most people when they see a thief with sword equipped, they think evasion spammer anyway.
how about a leap where u spin your staff above your head like a helicopter and fly off into the sunset?
that would be just op
less op than some of the skills proposed

I like challenge of overcoming difficult stuff, but I play this game for fun, the moment it becomes a job to overcome Anet’s higher plans, I will simply look for fun elsewhere.
I do however feel sorry for the new players coming to this class, you can see several threads asking for help already. Even in the game, some players ask me for tips and tricks on how to get better at playing thief. Their problem is low dmg and poor survival, and I honestly don’t know what to advise them anymore. Spend 1000+ hours on thief so you don’t die the instant some sneezes on other side of the map? Most end up with p/d condi or hop onto another class. We can tell ourselves how good we are for playing “high skill class” but it won’t change the fact that thief class is lacking something.
Your attachment needed small adjustment.
I don’t see problem with the trait being in acro line, not everything stealth related needs to be in one trait line, which to be honest is already very strong.
The issue for me with AE is that most of the time I don’t get bashed into head when I gain revealed. It’s either when I stealth that people start cc around like crazy or there is no stealth involved at all and I simply can’t/fail to dodge the hammer.
I believe this trait is meant to be high skill trait to use, ie, you anticipate cc incoming so you get yourself revealed. First, the skill cap on this to achieve good results is in somewhere on the same lines like telepathy. Second, many cc skills have rather low cd and getting myself revealed to counter cc, I simply reduce my dmg output as not all situations allow for a backstab as the mean to get revealed. To time backstab AND incoming cc counter at the same time, well, maybe the devs can do it consistenly and we all have to L2P.
Personally, I’d find protection on revealed a lot more useful than stability. Why? No need for some ultra high skill timing like with AE and it’d be actually helpful in a lot more situations. Stability won’t do anything if someone uses sic em and then delivers ranged dmg that can be just as high as backstab, except this one is channeled so teleports are useless unless you are already near ranger’s max range and the number of dodges in average build is not enough to avoid all the hits. Would protection help me in this situation? Most certainly yes.
Anet devs’ expectations in skill thieves should use to counter other classes resulted in a trait that gives too little for too much investment.
What’s next, using stealth reveals you?
Well, the SA trait that stealths you on steal is bugged, so you get revealed when you stealth from the steal. I guess this counts, until they bother fixing it.
it’s not a bug, you’re probably using a projectile weapon. the pistol shot (for example) that’s in travel time hits the target right after you stealth, so it looks bugged.
they should fix that though.
Stealth is so bugged lately that using it is like playing rng roulette. Mug + stealth on steal is bugged. Couple of times I got reveleaed debuff on me while standing in SR doing no dmg, no aoe either, didn’t get pushed out. Yesterday I had the best wtf moment with stealth ever, zerg chasing me, I drop SR (the usual, no dmg, no aoe, didn’t get pushed out), when I suddenly dropped stealth somehow, no revelaed but I saw no stealth icon in buff bar either. Whole zerg after me cos well, they saw me.. Some 4 to 5s later stealth came back without me doing anything (utilities on cds, bow equiped, HP too high for last refuge to kick in) and no friendly player around to stealth me.
Perhaps the problem comes from you comparing thief wep skills/traits etc to similar skills of other classes. Ofc some of the will look weak in comparison but don’t forget thieves can spam same skill till their initiative is gone.
Thief is pain for any new player to the class, you simply need more practice.
Thief defenses are active, you won’t take much beating and if you build defensively, you will hit like a wet noodle. There isn’t really any trick to playing thief, it just takes some time to learn the class and well, every other class too cos you need know your opponents.
I have full zerk gear, 6/6/x/x/x in all modes and do fine, might not be the “meta” here and there but that’s just my preference.
I’d fall asleep without having the risk of crisis mode 24/7 :P
No, they kill you cos you go full tank and can’t kill a fly.
Wut full dire tank specs have the easiest time against thieves.
Until that condi tank bumbs into someone who knows how to deal with condis builds, which are easy to play but generally limited in comparison to power builds.
I have a love/hate relationship with this class. I enjoy the burst and ‘edge of your seat’ playstyle of the class. But one the more aggrivating experiences playing a thief is being on the receiving end of other thieves and being 2 shot.
While burst is still high overall in this game, I’d argue the class most susceptible to it is also the class most capable of abusing it. And it’s this that kind of makes me hate the class.
I can’t build for armor because starting armor is so low, if you don’t spec shadow arts it’s not worth the investment. It’s made even worse because I need to build for health because condis will wreck my day because of how poorly the class handles condis. But even if I found room to build for enough armor to blunt reasonable burst and enough health so a few seconds of condi pressure don’t kill me, I’m still 2 shot by fellow thieves which makes me question why I bothered to run anything but full zerker or valk+zerk at all.
I would gladly trade some burst if in return I got some tools to help survive while outside of stealth for more than a split second. It would feel good to be able to stomp someone I managed to kill in WvW without fear of the zerg’s random AE absolutely destroying me.
So yes, I would say the Thief is actually a pretty weak class overall but it has some fairly overpowered mechanics masking the issues the class has. Without those things being toned down and allowing some of the weaknesses to look like real weaknesses, nothing will change.
Other classes are just as capable of huge burst, some don’t even need to use weapon skills to burst down a squishie. WvW wise it’s stealth that makes it a lot easier to play zerker for thief than other class with zerk build. That’s why you don’t see other classes with zerker builds as often as zerker thieves.
Thief strongest defenses are the active ones, blinds, stealth, evasion, teleports, those your best tools to survive. Thieves are not meant to be build to take dmg, you should avoid it. Trading thief burst for survival would just make us a weaker version of warrior. No thanks.
If you want to be able to stomp someone in zerg aoe, you picked a wrong class.
Stealth is still the dumbest thing in a 1v1. You win, they stealth and blink away, heal up. You lose? They kill you because of all their blinks and stealth.
It’s a lose-lose for every other class that doesn’t go full tank and the way thief is designed is 1 in 100 reasons the pvp in this game will never be taken very seriously. What a downgrade from gw1.
No, they kill you cos you go full tank and can’t kill a fly.
Longbow allows for the laziest playstyle ever. Autoattack afk bots when all their skills are on cd, then skill spam no matter what each skill does.
Majority of rangers never learned anything else than spamming their skills as soon as they are off cooldown. How often do you see a ranger in pve dodge, they rotate pets to keep agro, no need for to learn other game mechanics. No wonder when they come into contact with other classes, they don’t give kitten and just continue to pew pew.
So when a ranger knockbacks mob/enemy in wvw away from me, I just let them deal with it themselves and I walk away. That enemy wvwer gonna kill you? Great
>>What an irony that omnom heals more than gm trait and it’s even life steal so it boosts dps too.
Omnom is a great food in high crit builds. That 1 second cooldown is nice and it also adds precision.
Keep in mind though that ghost does have a cooldown of 1 second. Your overall heal from IP will still be higher as you will get heals from cleaves/ricochets and AOE attacks.
IE in theory ricochet with unload can get you 32 separate hits each adding health whereas ghost can kick in twice at max during that unload.
I would never use IP unless it a high crit rate build and the weapon set one that allows multiple attacks in a short period of time .
That above is true for SoM, not IP since it heals for % of crit dmg, doesn’t matter if that dmg is delivered in single hit or multiple hits over the same time. It’s still %.
>>Congratulations on your 30 point GM trait that is roughly equivalent to the Regeneration boon.
1>The build already has hidden killer+ as every hit is a crit. Hidden killer is of no use to such a build. The crit rate is in fact higher then 85 percent.
2>The other choice in the line is that off executioner which is a boost to a single target of 20 percent damage when they below 50 percent health. This is certainly not a bad choice but it hardly the only one.
3>Choosing that extra damage does not give one more armor or more health. It provides more damage in the hopes you can get the enemies health down before he does the same to you. That is all.
4>If I take Monks focus on the guardians line I gain heals based on meditations. The shortest cooldown is around 20 seconds for a 2k heal. This adds up to 100 hps. Guardians do not consider that trait garbage.
5>In order for a medi build to work the Guardian generally takes several meditations while locking up skills on his toolbar the cooldowns on these skills are as long as 60 seconds. if one does your same math for that full period it a heal rate of 160hps. Yet it not considered “garbage”.
6>The IP source of heals is available as long as you are attacking. Further to that just as the Guardian adds more sources of heals by using more meditations, the Thief can do the same . Omnomberry ghost will fire about 10 times in that 15 second perriod for 3250 more heal . Your HPS is now 232. This can be added on top of your Regen.
7>in your example above using executioner for around half of those seconds no extra damage will accrue. It does nothing until the enemy at under 50 percent health. Even if we assume this happens at the 6 second mark 20 percent extra damage will apply to 9 seconds which is 60 percent of the time. 60 percent of 30k damage is 18000 damage. 20 percent more damage on top of that is 3600 more damage. 3600/15 is 240 more dps.
Using your own (flawed) methodology IP/ghost build has just neutralized your executioner.
What an irony that omnom heals more than gm trait and it’s even life steal so it boosts dps too.
