I feel the need to point out that this bug was introduced in the 10/1 patch. It has not been here since release.
Also, a point I forgot earlier—a cutscene means that we know that the player sees the important part. We had an issue with some steps where the player would look the wrong way at the wrong time, and have no idea what just happened.
Keep in mind that falling off will teleport you back to the start, it’s only if you die and retry will it use the checkpoint.
It would help immensely if you could report specific instances where you ran into trouble. I can fix them on a case by case basis, but it’s simply not practical for me to go through hundreds of story steps looking for cases where the checkpoints are too close to the instance boundary.
The fix won’t hit the live servers until the 10/22 content update.
Norn have many skilled blacksmiths, so I’m guessing they arm and armor many of the foot soldiers. The sylvari also make up the most renowned special operations unit in the Pact, the Pale Reavers. Since they cannot be corrupted by Zhaitan, they’re used for many dangerous missions in Orr.
For human characters, Beirne is the very first NPC they meet. So, granted, he doesn’t mean anything to other species, but we didn’t pull him out of thin air just to kill him for this step. : )
It’s a tricky issue. Players have a number of tools to break story sequences, intentionally or otherwise. They can break out of stun/immobilize, they can push/pull NPCs, try to drop obstacles in the way of NPCs, et al. Going to a cutscene is heavy handed, yes, but it’s the “safest” way to deal with certain sequences. We don’t have the resources to account for all possibe outcomes (like doing 2 totally seperate story chains based on whether an NPC lives or dies).
Try travelling to another map, or logging out/in.
When was the last time you tried this story step? It has been revised since release.
I can see a noticable difference between 1 and 2. 3 does look the best, but I don’t know if that’s the angle showing off the hero’s armor better, a difference in hardware, or any other factors that might be affecting the screenshot.
Fixed in the 10/22 update.
I’m going to have to respectfully disagree. I’m not using a “super-tweaked build” or “l33t strats”. When I test, I use a character of the same level as the story step, with equal-level blue armor, no insignias or traits, and no utility skills that I wouldn’t have access to yet. My common test char is a thief that’s based on my “live” character, that’s designed to fight veterans and complete skill challenges with minimal help. As I’ve stated, I also looked at this story step with both an elementalist and an engineer, neither of which are classes I play very often, so I know I wasn’t using advanced tactics with them. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect players to adjust their traits/weapons if they find a story step is too challenging.

I’m not sure what to tell you. I just completed the story step as both a warrior and an engineer to make sure I wasn’t relying on specific class skills. (I usually play a thief.) Zott can take 2 fireballs before he’s downed, making sure he’s in front of the portal when the harpy appears is key. With warrior, I just got close and meleed the harpy to deathwhile Zott tanked (and eventually he went down with the harpy at 10% health.) With engineer, I dropped both of my turrets (rifle and rocket) and shot the harpy until Zott was defeated, then watched for the fireball and evaded out of it. Even with a direct hit, my engineer still had about 20% of his health.
Known issue.
There’s a fix slated for the 10/22 content update. In the meantime, a workaround is to leap on top of the door.
?
As I’ve stated before, we tested a change that worked for 1,2, and 5 players, but it’s not slated to go in until the next content update (10/22).
I’ve done it as both a thief and an ele. (And no traits.)
Where exactly is it stalling? At the Pact fortress? Earlier? Later?
[BUG] Party members getting sent to wrong faction when sharing their Personal Story

As I said above, we do not have a way to do that. Customer Support does not have the ability to set your active story step. I don’t have that ability. We also cannot set up an automated solution because there is NO difference between a player who is in (for example) the Vigil because they chose it, and someone who’s in the Vigil because they got accidentally set there. (We were able to automate the “skipped ahead” fix because we could tell if a character had gaps in their story.)

As far as I know, we’ve squashed the bug that was causing this, so it won’t happen going forward, but as I mentioned above, we have no way to retroactively try to fix characters that are in the wrong order. Sorry!
Do you have “Fast Cast Ground Targeting” turned on in the options panel? If you do, it’s trying to target your mouse cursor position, which is probably hovering over a point that’s too far.
I just completed it with no issues. I’ll keep looking, but if I can’t reproduce the issue, I can’t give an ETA for an update.
EDIT: I’m now 0/3 trying to get this bug to happen, so I’m at a dead end. What’s your current objective (if any)? Do you see Rytlock and/or Steelbane? Where are they?

There are multiple threads on this already. It’s addressed in the next content update, which is 10/22. It’s an inconsistent problem, if you check the other threads you can see other suggestions for making sure the objective completes.
Known issue:

Fixed in the next content update (10/22).
This is stated above, but I’ll say it again:
Failing the jumping puzzle will down you and out you back at the start so you can bandage up or try again, or die and skip the puzzle. (If you choose “Retry from checkpoint” after being knocked off the ledge, it will put you past the puzzle.)
I need exact details on when and how it’s stalling. It’s not ocurring for me, or for our testing department, so obviously there’s something we’re doing different.
What’s your current objective?
Note that the “Estate of Decay” bug has nothing to do with this thread topic.
TL;DR Known issue, jumping on TOP of the door will allow you to interact with it.

TL;DR Fixed in next content update (10/22).
Open the world map and zoom out. It’s trying to show you the shortest path to the story instance, but doesn’t realize that the asura gate is under construction. The actual entrance is in Mount Maelstrom.
Try going to a new map or logging out/in.
Hrmph, on the Hero panel, what are your armor and health ratings? I’ve done this story step as both a thief and a warrior, and while the rocks would knock me down, they never one-shot me.
Try switching maps, or logging out and back in.

TL;DR Known issue, it’s being investigated. No ETA on a fix. Workaround: climb around to the TOP of the door, it will let you interact frpm the top.

Quick update: I’m not the guy fixing this, so I can’t go into any detail or give an ETA, but I have been following all the internal emails today so I can guarantee that it’s an extremely high priority for the folks who CAN fix this.
Update: I modified the gate attack sequence and our testers tried it with 1, 2, and 5 players, and it worked every time. Unfortunately, the next content update isn’t until 10/22, so it will be a while before the fix hits the live servers.
I just did this as a L42 warrior, I used dual axes instead of a hammer since they’re faster. I didn’t run into any problems, especially with the 2 NPCs to help. I found that staying at range was very dangerous becuase of the powerful rock throw, but if I stayed in melee it never threw any rocks at me. I only got knocked down once, but if that’s an issue for you, try the Balanced Stance utility skill.
At what point did your next quest change? Did it suddenly go from “Tower Down” to “Shell Shock”? What was your next listed step when you finished “Forging the Pact”? Just looking at the journal there’s no apparent issue, it looks like it would for any character that chose that story branch.
Just a quick update, we’re actively looking at this story step to try and figure out the issues.
