Yeah, I mean it makes sense, but honestly I’m not willing to read the whole naming policy (the things I agree to without reading…, i accept any repercussions though) but I know an old game I played also banned any famous names so if you slipped one through they’d also force a change if caught. So I’m curious if it’s just the whole terrorist thing (which I do find sad, it’s letting the terrorists win!) or if it’s also the whole “c’mon come up with your own thing”.

Nah. The blame can be squarely aimed at the terrorists. There are that many Norse gods running around that if a name-change was forced then I’d imagine the game would lose a fair chunk of goodwill.

Absolutely, but would naming your character Jesus be ok? What about Allah? Muhammad? Vishnu? Jehovah? Satan? At what point are these type of figures ok and what point are they bad? What makes Thor/Odin ok but probably not some of the others? Just that no one has a fit?

As far as Jesus. It’s a VERY common name.
It is of Hebrew origin, and the meaning of Jesus is “the Lord is salvation”. Short form of Joshua, from the Hebrew name Jehoshua.

The appended “Christ” is what makes the difference. Even in His time the name Jesus was very common. Which is why He was referred to as Jesus of Nazareth, or The Christ.

Even if somebody named their character Jesus Christ nobody should care because it is none of their business.

True, but some people will get offended about anything…

I wish more people would watch George Carlin’s dirty words, such a great summary of my view on this entire topic.

Makes sense, old religions don’t matter only “new” ones.

Pretty much. We can think and do as we like but when that thought and action collides with the greater polite society we have to watch ourselves. Polite being the word, and which is the point of this thread pretty much.

I really don’t know how polite it is to turn old religious icons into fiction while we keep our current religious icons taboo. Whole thing seems a little silly to me.

Because i happen to know someone who was forced to change their character names when there is absolutely nothing offensive about them. So if there is an actual professional moderation team at work, why are they not professional enough to spot the difference between offensive/insulting/inappropriate and normal?

And no, the names in question are not – in any way – inappropriate.

The problem with the “inappropriate character name” thing is that it’s set to automatically force a renaming after a certain number of reports are made against the same name (I’ve heard multiple times that the number is four). Someone in my guild was forced to change his name (which is the name of a goddess and multiple fictional characters) because enough people reported his name due to the same four letters being used as an acronym for a terrorist organization.

So yeah, something needs to change there.

I see that someone referred to earlier statements I made about this, but I want to make it clear, again, that we do not have automatic blocks based on the number of reports. Auto-blocks based report numbers would encourage (and support) mass griefing. Consider: “Report Fred.1234 for an offensive name, and if enough from our guild do it, that person will be blocked!” That’s just not the way things happen, not for behavioral issues, not for offensive chat, not for names.

Rest assured that reported names are reviewed by a human being, and a human being — not a report-counting automaton — decides on the appropriate action, often with input from another human being on the team.

So, are mythological names a no no, or is it that a terrorist organization coppied that name forcing it to become banned?

On the Kittenizer™: Yes it’s an automated system but it’s also a thing here, now. In fact, I find myself saying “kitten” in actual speech. Which is fine at the office, where everyone understands. Might be a little awkward IRL. For instance, “Well, kitten, none of the kitten avocados are ripe enough for guacamole” at the grocery store."

I do enjoy that one of the dev’s character names on the forums is kitten, and in the game… something else…, why is that word considered bad, if you don’t mind me asking? starts with a d ends with a p

as for the rest, personally I know I had an issue coming out of high school. It’s become common vernacular to cuss for the youth of today (and many adults). The F bomb has become equivalent to an “umm” for many people.

Well said IllegalChocolate, though IMO there are 2 ways to approach learning PVE in this game. Dive in headfirst going strait to glass, or tank up and pay attention to each hit and learn to avoid them knowing you’re only surviving because of your safety net. I personally agree that diving in head first, and it will generally be the quicker route to success but wrought with frustration and death. The alternative of tanking up may lead you to become too complacent and not concerned enough with dodging attacks you can simply brush off but you’ll actually be able to be successful along the route thanks to relying on that support structure.

As long as you’re dedicated and adamant about actually learning I don’t think either method is wrong, just again, tanking up often leads to complacency.

I like dmg, I use the seaweed that gives 10% dmg while moving.
I was wondering what rune I can use for urban battlegrounds? Course one of the runs will be force, and being an engi I dont like the vul one that is suggested. Is there anything else?

Strength is nice if you’re not maintaining might consistently, It’ll add ~6 extra stacks IIRC. Accuracy not bad if you have room in the crit category (if you’re using zerk armor, or lets you swap to it cause I know you have it ). That’s my best thoughts on it.

Ranger or Guardian: Best DPS In PvE?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jerus.4350

Jerus.4350

Guardian can probably have more dps with the unscathed contender but that trait is not operational all the time (only when you have aegis up). Rangers probably have more dps and offensive support but Guardian has lots of nice support too (reflection, aegis, protection, blinds etc.). Rangers are more of a luxury in terms of support comparable to warriors.

So…rangers aren’t important to a group?

There are 5 members in a party.

Warrior gives the highest stat buff for all professions so it’s given that you take one. They can also provide alot of might effortlessly.

Staff ele is top tier DPS and has the almighty Frost Bow.

Thief is also top tier DPS with lots of blinds and the bonus of enabling easier skips that will save you alot of time.

Ranger has good burst damage and second to warriors for stat buffing.

Guardians gives aegis, projectile block/reflects, blinds, cleanses, stability and some might. These might not directly affect stats like a Ranger does but these enable other party members to not dodge and allow them to build more offensively(traits+utilities) and keep attacking or possibly channeling a hard hitting skill. Reflect can also be significant in damage(like in Arah).

It’s not just simply which one does more damage, you have to look at the bigger picture and ask yourself which one allows the whole party to do more damage in the long run.

This. Basically all 5 spots in the party is predetermined. This game has trinity, and that is fact. 99% of the situation it’s best to have 1 war 1 guard 1 ele 1 thief, and the last spot depend on dungeon and situation.

The remaining 1 slot is fight over between mesmer, ranger or engineer, depending on what a team needs. Some more experienced group will even pick another ele because their utilities and damage are just too good. Less experienced group may take mesmer as a back-up utility person. Some team may take ranger for even higher overall group dps, but the ironic part is another ele can totally fill up ranger’s dps role most of the time, if not better.

I really hope specialization will change this trinity thing of GW2, which 4 classes are stronger than the rest of the classes in dungeon.

Well, honestly it’s WEET, War, Ele, Ele, Thief as the general basis for any group, you slot in whatever for that last spot depending on the dungeon. And that’s likely either Guard or Mesmer, far more often Mesmer due to portal tricks. For pure damage you likely bring a 3rd Ele. And honestly you might even drop the war/thief in favor of Ele’s in some cases

That said, we’re talking seconds here. We’re talking optimization not viability. It’s more comparabe to other games situations where one healer is the best, one tank is the best, and one dps is the best so those 3 are the primary “Meta” classes, doesn’t mean that the other options for each role aren’t completely acceptable though.

Swapping professions really only means you trade out optimal damage/utility for something else. On longer fights Engi is great with it’s persistent vuln stacking and you can fill in for some might stacking and stealth. Ranger has offensive buffs comparable to warrior, it’s just honestly a frustrating profession that can be difficult to handle and screws things up if you aren’t perfect with the pet AI and what not. Necro is the only profession that really needs a hand in PVE, they just don’t really compete in any PVE based aspect compared to other professions.

And, @Dragonax, I was under the impression that necro was mid level in PVP at this point? /shrug either way I think there are plenty of ways to adjust them without making too big of changes for the PVP side.

I guess a big point to my question is: Why take this game so seriously? You are playing a video game, it should be relaxing. People seem to treat this like a job, not as a fun activity.

I don’t see it that way at all. Part of the FUN of dungeons is trying to do them efficiently and cleanly. If I wanted to just kill trash, well I could go to any different open world thing and slaughter to my hearts content. But in Dungeons I have an end objective, something I’m trying to accomplish and trying to do that to the best of my ability is what I have fun (though I’ll admit I don’t usually like going too overboard, it stresses me out)

So personally it’s not about the reward at all, but about the feeling of knowing I just totally rocked that objective. Same reason I look for short cuts in racing games, or challenge my own best time on things like the CoD training mode stuff (even if I already knock out the top rank easily). It’s just fun to do your best /shrug.

I have a follow up on that weird Alphard glitch where she resets to full hp. I was testing around with it and I’m pretty sure that it happens when she does her scorpion wire attack, because as you all know it targets everyone in the party, yeah?

Well, what I think is the problem is that her hook targets a player that’s out of bounds for her (behind bone wall, etc) and it causes her hp to just immediately go back to full. I’m not 100% sure on this so maybe someone can confirm it.

Have had it happen while we were all in the PUG spot, doesn’t really disprove the theory (might be out of range, or maybe it’s targetting a phantasm or something htat happens to disappear right at the wrong time), I’ll try to keep an eye out for it.

So is it fair to say just pick what is most fun? They both do different things as well as capable of doing high DPS.

If you go WvW or PvP you’re going to see the same thing…they do different things well and can put a hurting on people if played right.

I think this sums it up perfectly.

@Zenith, umm pretty sure rangers have some of the best burst. Barrage + Rapid Fire under Quickening Zephyr/Signet of the Wild/Rampage as One, swap sword/axe use Path of Scars and then auto to finish out your buffs, really some of the best burst, only downside is long reuse on the buffs.

Scepter is really, really, really terrible to use for PvE unless you’re only using it to blast in a fire field with prior to taking out a LH. There’s absolutely no other reason to justify taking it unless you don’t care about having dreadful damage output.

It’s not really something that’s up for debate, it has terrible DPS. If it’s what you like then by all means, do as you please.

Depends on the content. WHile you’re absolutely right that sustained damage on Scepter is terrible, the burst seems pretty sweet and in a lot of open world content things die within that burst quite easily.

I took my scepter through my personal story when I did it all on that character ( yeah i know, I have all 11 chars all the way through it >.<) things would be dead by the time I finished the might stacking rotation more often than not. Really had no complaints about it for that type of content.

Of course when I got to a boss I’d pull out the LH or swap Staff if I… died on my first attempt ;-;

So yeah, anything that doesn’t die in a couple hits, absolutely agree, but a lot of trash does and I kinda liked it in those scenarios.

Ranger or Guardian: Best DPS In PvE?

I prefer melee actually, and would likely only use a bow when I wasn’t able to get in close.

You use your bow in melee, though you only use the 5 and 2 skill then swap to your melee weapon for a while till the 5 and 2 skill will be back up… or just don’t and use it only as a starter for fights for the high vuln and the cripple.

To get to the question in the title, IIRC Rangers will edge out a guardian in the max dps builds but not by much. However guards usually don’t use their max DPS builds and opt for some dps loss to bring more support. Likewise though if you can’t handle sword you’re looking at 7-17% less damage on your ranger depending on cripple/chill/immob uptime and that GS is simply less damage than sword. Sword can be hard to handle but pretty fun if you can get the hang of it.

As for which you should play… don’t bother looking for objective reasons, they are both good, just play the one you like better. If you enjoy managing the pet (one of the reasons I don’t play mine much) and can handle sword there’s nothing wrong with ranger. Guard of course is the support powerhouse profession and is always liked, but again, both are great additions to a group if properly played.

And then I would have two totally different sets and builds for super versatility

Ah, scepter doesn’t have any cleave. OP shouldn’t play scepter exclusively in PvE without any conjured weapons. Also, ele dps is all about stacking damage modifiers. And do not forget that veteran and above has twice to more times HP as players so there is a point which stacking defense becomes obsolete. If you solo several mobs at once and their attack pattern is hard to predict, it’s better to deal big damage and try to rally from the fallen enemies than survive and dragging the fight.

Yes I really want to play a guardian and help my team with more than just raw DPS!

He’s a Sylvari and I’m an RPer and he’s part of the Nightmare Court. I see him as sort of a “Scarlet Crusader”.

And you can very much help with more than just raw dps, it’s just that you shouldn’t ignore your damage output.

It’s all about opportunity cost. What are you gaining and what are you losing?

I think once you play a bit more you’ll come to understand why we all have a keen eye on our DPS potential. We surely don’t ignore support, not at all, we just try and optimize and bring only what we need and not have wasted stats/skills.

Each character in the group is going to have their support role even an Ele who is generally the big damage guy will often drop a sandstorm for blinds, or swirling winds to block a projectile attack, maybe even water field or condi cleanses.

We all play support first, we just don’t bring more than we need.

I hope that makes sense, it’s something that a lot of people have trouble with and why you see so many “zerker is dumb” posts, those people simply can’t get their brain to switch gears from the standard MMO where you have healers focusing only on heals or tanks just on being beefy (which isn’t meta in those games either, but it’s accepted).

You don’t use flamewall during the D/F rotation though, well not the optimal one, it can be easier to get your blasts but it lowers your dps due to it’s low coefficient.

And D/F will also have one additional blast (Unless you’re worried about defiance issues, but soon that won’t matter) from comet as the second offhand dagger blast is dumb to use in combat.

I honestly can’t tell you why it’s less DPS, I just know Zelyhn ran the numbers when they adjusted stuff a while back and someone brought up the idea and pretty sure he said it was actually slightly lower DPS. While you have some higher damage attacks and what not there’s always other things to factor in, cast times, might, etc.

As for 25 stacks of might, you’ll only hit that with a strength sigil and str runes unless you have additional outside sources. I’ll usually bounce between like 22-25 if I’m executing it properly with my strength sigil/runes. The rotation alone is ~15 stacks with str runes.

Mainly though it’s not the damage that makes focus such a nice option, it’s the utility, you get invuln, projectile defense, and a chill all of which are great utility. Dagger you basically get more speed, larger fire field and I guess a small additional heal/cleanse (note magnetic wave is also a cleanse for 3 condis).

For guardian, The fractal hammer build is very nice. You can even do variations for a little more. Bring along a Phalanx Strength warrior and you don’t have the might issue from the overbearing light fields. I know this variation my buddy used way back when we were first starting was enough to really help on some fights that has more passive damage or if we screwed up.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQJASWlsApUo9CxZI8DRR8gk1Y7+UXAsfutLA-TBSBABWcBAoU9HzUCe1+jyP80FswRAQjDBAAPAAA-e

You lose 100 precision and the more consistent 10% mod and a potential Damage Sigil, but you can still get the 10% if you’re not full endurance and you pick up some healing.

As you get better though the healing and supportive additions of things become less needed and the DPS alternatives become much more appealing.

As an engineer, I have never once felt the need to have weapon swap. In fact, if I did have access to it, I feel like that would give me a huge advantage over every other class.

With the idea being “out of combat only” I don’t really see any advantage for engineer, in fact I don’t see myself using it very often at all. Maybe a quick swap to pop the blast on shield, but I can alraedy do that with my inventory very easily so /shrug I wouldn’t really care.

Ele though I do a lot of inventory swapping so it’d be nice just to pop blasts/swiftness, though being in the right attunement for the skills I want is more of the issue than simply weapon swapping.

Overall I don’t really feel a need for it, could be nice to not have to open inventory for might stacking or stealthing, but /meh.

Dagger: keep focus4/locust swarm on cooldown, pop into DS for fury and use 5 when it’s up, use utilities when appropriate, other than that you’re using 1 on daggers?

DS: Use axe2 and hop into DS, pop out and use axe2 again + Focus4/locust and dagger auto out of DS, swap axe and go back into DS for autos and again keep DS5 on cooldown.

That about right? (I only wvw on necro )

Odd, you shouldn’t be whittling things down slowly as a necro unless you are utilizing a very tanky setup. I would recommend taking a look at some dps rotations for them depending on what you are running.

As far as PvE combat is concerned, it shares some similarities with other MMOs like WoW where you do have an optimized combat algorithm to maximize your damage potential (contrary to popular believe, you don’t just spam 1).

With Necro it’s a lot of spam1 though

I made an lfg, ‘’god like ppl, zerk only,u die u get kicked, melee everything, melee lupi of the wall, p3’’. to my surprise ppl actually joined. It ended at the crusher. lol

Lupi of the Wall? He’s grown so accustomed to it that he’s adopted it as his title?

I think you misunderstand me Windsagio because reading your post it sounds like we’re on basically the same page. Content shouldn’t be done for pure monetary optimization, but instead because we want to do it. We shouldn’t feel pushed to do chest farms and with that have trouble finding just normal SW maps. We shouldn’t be pushed to do certain dungeon paths and leave others barren taking forever to find groups to do it.

My point though was that I’d even go as far as to say difficulty shouldn’t matter either, as it can create an issue for newer players feeling unable to progress in the game in the general sense based on ascetics and general purchases. Instead we should simply have special things or even purely fun reasons to do various content and not feel at a loss because we’re doing something we like instead of what is most monetarily optimized.

(Of course more challenging content is even harder to balance as you have to factor in failure rates and all that, but yeah… /shrug talking ideals here)

Melee vs Ranged vs Weapon Sets

There are a significant amount of bosses, events and champions in this game where going into Melee range is suicide, counter productive and offers ZERO advantage but PLENTY of disadvantages.

It isn’t fair, it isn’t right and it does not respect the rule of RISK vs REWARD. Going into melee should be worth the risks and a viable option far more often than
ranged.

There needs to be more bosses & champions who block projectile attacks or punisher players for using them to balance out the fact there are bosses where melee is a MASSIVE disadvantage with no rewards.

Sucky thing is bosses that reflect projectiles often hit the melee character who’s in the path of the projectile rather than the user :b So they keep plinking away while I take their shots to the face going “wth is hitting me?”

That said, there are range only attacks, like for example Lupi. Spider Queen in AC used to have a nasty attack that was range only promoting meleeing… people cried and now it hits everyone :b because apparently meleeing and not being hit by range only attacks was an exploit. People in this game can be quite funny sometimes.

I’d go with the same thing as normal D/F, with a modified rotation. Meaning 66200 or 66002 depending on dodges. Remember even if you don’t need more might you’ll still want to be blasting with persisting flames for fury, having a PS war will just make it not as crucial to optimize as your fury uptime is great with a few blasts.

IIRC the rotation was similar to the D/F as well, but with firegrab/ring of fire and ride the lightning rotated in when up. IIRC it worked out to less DPS than D/F though as well as less utility, just with more mobility with ride the lightning/updraft. I’d really suggest jsut going to D/F for the extra support, can always swap in offhand dagger for RTL during skips anyways.

In the case of instanced content though; it sets an expectation, everything else (fractals, aether path) gets fairly commonly mentioned as ‘not rewarding enough’.

Instanced content or not have nothing to do with it. It’s a time vs reward vs challenge (or difficulty balance.

Dungeon is easier than Fractal 50 so Fractal should have a better reward/hour.
Silverwaste is easier than Dungeon so Dungeon should have a better reward/hour.
etc, etc

CoF path 1 is twice as fast as most other dungeon, so it should reward half as much. TA Aetherpath is 3-4 times longer than normal dungeon so it should reward 3-4 times more.

While that’s very logical, I don’t think that really connects with the philosophy of this game as well as it seems like it should.

This game is very much more for the casual player, pumping even more money into the more hardcore would create a large wealth gap and could create the feeling as if new/casual players have an impassible mountain to climb to reach their goal of owning say a legendary or something like mjolinar.

So I really don’t see scaling the monetary gains being the correct route. I think trying to have equality across the board in that if you’re playing you’re gaining, but let the choice on what you do be based on other variables. You may do SW for your Luminescent gear. Fractals for your weapons. Dungeons for token gear/achievement. Or just choose what you have fun doing.

But, this is kinda off topic.

Part of the problem there is that the time/effort/reward on most of the old dungeons is pretty far out of whack. It sets up an impossible expectation.

I don’t think its far out of whack. Its about 7gold per hour in good pugs group and up to around 10 gold per hour in organized group.

Silverwaste on the other end can give you 15-20 gold per hours wihtout much problem and it can even go up to 30 gold per hour in the right conditions.

In the case of instanced content though; it sets an expectation, everything else (fractals, aether path) gets fairly commonly mentioned as ‘not rewarding enough’.

I agree with Windsagio here, it’s become the benchmark due to it’s strait forward method of reward. “here’s cash in your pocket” and all things get compared to it, I don’t think that’s really the best way to design rewards. It turns things into a farm instead of enjoyable content where you play what you want, when you want, for the reasons you want.

That said, challenging content especially needs to be rewarding. Any challenging content is going to be left alone by the majority of players and really isn’t going to show up as “worth it” on any metrics tracking player participation and interest.

I’d bet you Triple Trouble has the same kind of mediocre participation. Teq probably did too a while back before it became “sit in sparkfly 15-30 mins before reset and soak up your reward”.

It’s just how challenging content works, it’s not something most people want to do, and even those that love it probably won’t do it constantly, unless they’re otherwise motivated, and that’s where the reward comes in. A little candy for the trouble.

I think Fractals did a fine job with the different skins and ascended boxes. The problem… they decided to be kittenes and lower the droprates to absurdly small chances, and with a large pool of possibilities the odds of getting what you’re after is just miniscule. That’s not right. But, the idea is right with unique rewards instead of a cash farm IMO. Now it’s time for new skins, and a drastic increase in droprate or adjustment on how the rewards are given, but I’ll leave it at that for fractal rewards.

I’ve still done far more dungeons than fractals though because It’s nice to jump in and hit something easy have a little fun, then go about my day, where more challenging content can hold you up for a while. And that’s fun, but another reason why people aren’t going to do it as often even if they love it.

I'm awful at Berserker.

Keep going with your warrior, it’s good practice for the fundamentals of the game. They have the evades/blocks but everything they do is a bit more standard, great to learn with… though personally I’m the worst warrior I suck at timing whirlwinds and often screw up my sword block.

If you want support though, it does exist, it’s just not in the typical “i’m a healer” sense. The way the game is set up for PVE the majority of it is hard hitting slow attack patterns which are something you can typically avoid. With blinds on trash, reflects for projectiles, blocks/dodges/evades for large attacks, well you just shouldn’t really be getting hit unless you screw up. There are some persistant condition fights, or passive damage in general, but those are more the exception than the standard. For those a little group coordination plus your healing skill should have you covered.

If you want to play support I highly recommend a guard, you have Aegis, blinds, projectile defense, condi cleanse, and some healing (and even protection)

Again, support is very much a thing, it’s just not your standard for MMOs GW2 is all about damage avoidance with just a little bit of healing. Kinda the reverse from most typical MMOs.
