Shocking…. “The Dreamer” got no update . . . . . . I really wish we had a effect when I first draw the weapon. (Like quip has the purple mist float around your character)

The Dreamer already has some of the best effects. Look at the Flameseeker Prophecies, doesn’t even have a footfall . . .

Same with Minstrel.

Why cant we have difficult content?

It seems you’re trying to link “difficult” with “cooperative”. I don’t feel that’s right. I’d love more Difficult content, things that actually make the individual play to a high level. More Cooperative content could be cool too, but with that you have the frustrations of trying to get your whole team onto the same map and trying to deal with griefers and general mouthbreathers scaling events while contributing nothing. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the cooperative play in this game, Especially after the megaservers were added in.

Training consists of basically going through with some people that know what they’re doing and asking questions about things.

There’s the “NOOB” guild stickied in the subforum, that’d be a good start, you can ask some of the mentors. If not if you ever see me on feel free to hit me up and I’d have no problem showing you through the dungeons I really know (many of them I haven’t done in long enough that I don’t remember them very well).

“Don’t auto-attack on flamethrower forever if you don’t want to be kicked from groups”

Thanx for your info. I’m playing Engineer for the first time. Why would I get kicked if I auto attack with flamethrower? It was keen on using one because I see a lot of people using that. It was one of the main reasons for choosing an Engineer.

Thanx in advance.

Visual spam, can make things hard to see, or so many say. Personally the flame jet has never been worse than the bomb/nade explosions, though I run on minimum graphics so my view may be very different.

Also, using FT for the auto is generally a sign of sub par play. Your ideal in dungeons/fractals will lean more towards Grenades being your “primary weapon” though juggling kits is the name of the game for optimal play in PVE.

World Bosses- take the waypoint get to the area, afk a few minutes, come back tag some stuff, afk a few more minutes, scoop up your loot and on to the next. Decent money, nothing to write home about but nice and easy to do while you do chores.

Silverwastes/Event trains (like in Orr or something) – Run around tag everything, constantly having to do something though it’s incredibly mindless and takes no more effort than simply moving your character around and spamming 1, highly suggest using a guard for Event trains, silverwastes is fine with whatever as you’re looking for credit on events not each individual kill. Overall it’s good money, though personally it lulls me to sleep, i can do it for a few minutes then it’s sleepy time.

Farm Dungeons – This actually takes some effort though, as the faster you run it the more money you make that day. If you actually do every one you want to do in your daily tour and you hve time left in the day you can default to the above. Good money, but higher effort.

WvW Zerg – Basically like the Event trains, except it’s harder and less rewarding but can be fun if you have a good commanders on your side and the opposing sides as it’s really quite tactical in many situations.. blah blah, it’s like a more fun Event Train with less rewards and more work.

Map Completion – Pretty kitten easy, if you gather/mine/whatever stuff as you go you can make some decent money, I know a friend had found a platinum path and was worth quite a bit. Decent Money, little effort, and you actually get to see the full variety of content in the game.

Just some thoughts.

If you could change one thing on guard...?

no one, with the new trait system, leveling in GW2 is really not fun, luck i have 1 of each class lvl80 before change.

It’s not nearly as bad as people make it sound. At least not for me, I got 3 stacks of SP scrolls sitting in my bank so buying traits is nice and easy.

No offense but if its not that bad, why would you use sp scrolls to buy traits instead of unlocking them. Of course nothing is ever bad when you dont actually have to do it :/, Hey leveling is easy I have tons of Tomes of Knowledge

Point is you have the option to buy your stuff at a reasonable price. You don’t have to go out of your way. And considering we’re talking alts I thought it was worth mentioning SP scrolls, if people aren’t saving them for alts they need to start if they want to make their altoholic lives easy

And just like Gizmo said, I’m not a fan of the trait system, it’s just not as bad as people make it out to be

Ele and Engi are probably the two most difficult professions to play, that said they’re a Blast to play.

Way I see it is warrior will teach you the basics of using your basic tools and learning to dodge. Playing Guard will teach you to fully respect active defense and things like blinds and reflects. You should also learn the value of working for the betterment of your team, where you may want a certain utility another one may be better for the group overall. Engi/Ele puts that all together while adding in Combo finishers and cooldown management. They’re truly the pinnacle as far as the complexity of the professions. Not to say that every Ele/Engi is some great player and every War is bad, just that the possibilities for each profession has those two really at a different level if you want to use everything you have available.

Sure thing. Whatever makes you sleep at night.

Sarcasm aside, can you give a more substantive counter argument? I’m curious what folks think on this, and what their reasoning is.

Let’s say we do allow jumping over walls. The first time it is done it is a novel strategy and everyone is wowed. After that, it becomes the status quo and we are back to square one as the same strategy is rehashed in subsequent runs. Eliminating “exploit” rules is not going to increase creativity or innovative solutions. Instead it will reinforce stale tactics that MUST be used in order to get a better time.

Like the p3 start, skipping past a door before it closes, right? Yet that one got the ok, but others didn’t.

Consistency just isn’t there is this set of rules, that’s why I feel there should be a discussion about them to nail it down.

I do like the idea of seeing what the fastest people can do unrestricted, but it’s not personally the gameplay I’m after, so there’s that.

And that basically answers dlonie’s question, why not have a free for all? Well because not everyone finds that fun. Rising brought it up earlier, is the goal to find who can do things the absolute fastest? or is it to create a competitive element to the PVE? If it’s a competitive element wouldn’t a larger pool of competitors be good?

how do you feel about passive swiftness?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Jerus.4350

Swiftness in dungeons with decent party comps should never be an issue unless people are simply being lazy. Most professions have some way to contribute to it. But, you also don’t get a dungeon without a warrior very often, and you can swap in the warhorn and hit 4 every so often to keep swiftness flowing pretty decently. Combine that with just about any other swiftness ability and you’re set.

Of course most people are lazy and unwilling to contribute to the team so you see warriors all the time using their Signet of Rage for their personal swiftness and then GS rushing off screaming “see ya suckers!”.

Fine, I’ll just make a kitten tool that one shots all mobs in an instance and triggers all cutscenes so I clear the dungeon in 2 seconds. I win.

Have you seen the Ocarina of Time speedrun stuff? It’s very interesting. The idea is to push the bounds of the game by finding every little hole in the code. Finding every little trick you can use. It is not about altering the game but besting it fully.

It’s taking the idea of AI manipulation to the next level. It’s not about creating some tool, but using the tools that are available in the best possible way.

I’m addicted to Rune of the Traveler or Rune of Speed on my Guardian.

I cannot not have it.

Really hope you’re using it in WvW then and not PvE, otherwise… facedesk.

I think that’s part of where the problem is. I “could” use traveler’s rune or speed rune, but it is widely frown upon by others.

Many class dont’ need to sacrifice their meta to get good mobility.

Doesn’t everyone have something able to match or exceed that utility other than guard/mesmer though? And for them use Hylek pots mixed with their stability tools and you’re able to exceed the 25%. Costs some, but it’s doable and still very very cheap overall.

Exactly. Those splits are what i want to see. They are interesting. Some aspects of accomplishing the splits may be lame and exploity. But this is the only game where the speedclearing community seems to care about that. Makes me think most people arent actual speedclearers. :P

Yeah, I mean I love the what is it 15-20 minute? clear of Ocarina of Time. BUT, it’s more of a situation of “is this what I want to play like” naw not really. I appreciate it but it’s not my cup of tea. I think that’s why 2 categories is our best option. Different strokes for different folks and all. Of course there’s the issue of diminishing competition for either one as people will choose which they want to focus on… so there’s that to think about /shrug.

What I really wish is that there was more freedom of exploration without having to resort to going outside the bounds of normal play. If more dungeons were designed like that it would be great.

So seems like some sort of a meeting to discuss rules

I figured this would happen. Weird how like 3 days ago I said, “I’ll bet there will be a meeting where ‘passionate’ rT members try to dupe the community into scrapping the restricted ruleset and totally destroy the SC community.”

I can already see it now. The destruction of the restricted rule set. Executioners Axes, harpy feathers, tonics, Hylek pots, watchwork portals. Have fun guys.

If that’s what a meeting ends up deciding then wouldn’t that mean it’s the more popular option?

Persuasive demagoguery + change for the sake of change has been known to override good sense.

I think there’s been enough reasonable commentary in this thread to warrant a discussion, not even including the talk about jumping puzzles and unrestricted stuff.

on the Jumping puzzle stuff being allowed, my only concern is when someone tries to submit a record where they teleport through a wall or something. I would like to see some of the JP stuff allowed, but how do you phrase the rule to allow that but not allow teleporting through some broken wall? just seems like an issue that could arise.

You can blink through the wall to make the orb skip faster without the need of portal/shadowtrap as demonstrated by our friend Anubau.

Edit: Arah p3

Whats wrong with blinking through a wall? If you are completing all objectives it makes little difference how you get to each one. Go watch some gw1 speedclears. :P

I guess I can see your point and that it could be interesting. With say the old P2 out of world thing someone could be unlocking the alphard waypoint while others are fighting belka, then meet up for abom, do that, send your guard/mes and maybe an Ele in for Lupi while the rest go and take out alphard.

Could surely be interesting, but I still think the idea of teleporting out of the world is quite lame, may not be the most convincing of arguments but I don’t think it should be allowed. Jumping over top of things, sure, going through walls, naw.

In PVE, excellence is’nt catered for. GW2 is too shallow and simplistic, almost something for players to start out with prior to moving on to more comprehensive games.

I agree with your first sentence. GW2 you don’t have to be great to get things done, not by a long shot. BUT, the combat allows it, the game play allows it. It’s there. The idea that there is no depth in this game is simply a fallacy created by the fact that there has been no new challenging content coming out, at all.

I’ve played other MMOs, played other RPGs, GW2 has a structure better than most and more fluid than any I’ve played. That’s the only reason I’m still around. All we need is new content that builds upon that gameplay in new and deeper ways.

As proof of my position I’d point out speedruns of dungeons. One misstep and you can throw the entire encounter off. A Stability/Aegis mistimed. A Projectile defense thrown late. Even a DPS rotation done poorly and you’re looking at a botched run. The depth of content is there it’s simply gone unused for the most part because you don’t have to do it, it just takes longer.

The game has the capacity to have content that requires the utmost attention and perfection, they simply haven’t given that content to us, instead we get another round of mindless open world zerging with some random twist. Encounters like Lupi, Fire Shaman, or Mai Trin are only the tip of the iceberg in what GW2 has the potential of doing.

So, yes, you’re right, but it’s not the inability of the game, it’s the inadequacy of the content to utilize the tools available.

Why "NOT" Staff?

Actually staff is the highest personal DPS weapon for an ele by quite a lot.

I even made a ton of minor mistakes in it.

Generally speaking when using staff in PvE you’ll want to camp fire with the exception of the very start of the encounter where you should begin with eruption (earth #2).

You sound to be kind of early into the class so this might go over your head, but staff is a good ele weapon for PvE if you know what you’re supposed to do and what traits to use etc.

Curious, do you go Earth →Erupt → Air → Glyph → Fire? I’ve been messing with my staff ele more

thieves, elementalists, necromancers etc. get passive signet that grants swiftness (your character runs faster).

but guardians, engingeers and warriors for example dont have that.

if other classes got that, why dont these?
of course i feel it’s a disadvantage.
and please don’t tell me alternative options. it’s slipping from the point i’m trying to make here.

this thread is about why some classes have passive swiftness and others don’t.
explain!

WHAT? You don’t want to hear alternatives you just want to complain about things? Labeling them incorrectly at that.

It’s 25% runspeed at the cost of a utility.
Warriors have a trait with that same effect if they’re carrying a melee weapon.

This issue is more in your head than an actual issue.

Hey guys, I have a question. When buying a path 2 arah from someone selling in lfg, but the quest to kill lupicus is still there, is it always an exploit? I thought that it was, that they must have gone underwater and skipped him using an exploit. Some random recently showed me how to skip lupicus using the jumping puzzle in arah though and, tbh, this doesn’t seem like an exploit to me. If there is a jumping puzzle that enables you to skip lupicus in arah, that seems legitimate. Opinions?

THink about this.

Going underwater is basically avoiding barriers they’ve set up in the game, right? That’s why it’s wrong.

Bosses and major events are the same thing, you’re supposed to kill them. Now there are optional events in some dungeons. There are bosses you can simply run past. But, Lupi is not one of those, the only ways to avoid him is through complicated jumping puzzles that are pretty clearly not intended, and even then you still see on the event window that it wants you to kill him.

So I ask you, why is going under the water not ok if skipping clearly intended barriers in Bosses ok?

I’m all for trash skipping JP, though they’ve made a pretty firm stance with their changes that they aren’t intended. I remember the old flower skip in TA I thought it was cool that they’d put a JP option in to avoid that long trash run. But, then they nerfed it. Wouldn’t that say to you that they don’t approve of it?

There are some other JP in Arah that I think are fine, though I wouldn’t argue if someone said they aren’t. In P3 you can do a JP to get to the Magecrusher. In P4 you can do a JP to get to the last boss from Simin. Just to name 2 pretty common ones. But each of these don’t skip bosses, and I think that’s the key when your deciding if it’s “ok” or an exploit. Again, you could still argue they are exploits, but they aren’t that big of a deal IMO.

I would love to learn how to do the legitimate solo. Tried doing path two with a full group and we kept getting stomped on the last turn before you get away from the spiders/aboms and into the undead again. Was able, however to sneak past most of it alone on my thief, just to see what was going on, and how far we actually had to go. Anybody have an up-to-date guide to this?

http://youtu.be/JUdzLYaM7tw?t=14m

When he says “No SR” that’s about where you’d drop SR for a safer run. You’ll see he uses Smokescreen initially, then drops a blinding powder as it’s about to wear off. Then they run around the ship and dodge the aboms/techs there. If you don’t get incredibly lucky RNG like they did on that run you can drop black powder and blast it a few times to keep your stealth going. When you get to that corner they stop at you Blast your Smokscreen again, run through, SR when it’s about to drop before that choke and yeah pretty much home free. You see the wall in that room you can stealth behind that again if you need to (sometimes there are things pathing through).

If that doesn’t help feel free to hit me up sometimes if you’re NA, I can’t solo alphard yet but it’s a pretty easy path, esp with a full group.

In regular jumping puzzles you don’t walk through walls and fall through terrain…

Doesn’t the LA (i think) pirate JP have walls you walk through?

Really though, The OP seems to agree with glitching under the world to be an exploit. Logically that would mean that using unintended methods of avoiding barriers they surely put there with the intention of stopping you is wrong, correct?

Why wouldn’t that allow apply to the bosses and major events of the path?

Using a JP to skip trash I think could be argued either way. Using it to skip bosses seems pretty strait forward exploit.

Here is the thing. I wouldn’t mind seeing no-rule speedruns with everything allowed, like its the norm in other games. On the other hand, I can understand when people don’t want to watch these and if they ask for rules. But if you start adding rules, then be consequent kitten . I mean seriously, look at this topic. We allow to oneshoot Lupicus but we need a discussion if we allow the use of a signet that allows to interrupt him.

If you want rules, okay. But then do it right and ban everything that’s clearly unintended design.

I’ts the same with the first trash skip in path 3. “Yeah,” said the dev one day. “We’ll put a few mobs there and a door that closes and only opens if the mobs are dead OR if you dont select the path right away, go there with the open path window, stack infront of the door, use stealth and then select your path. That souds like good design, right?”
I don’t see a difference between this and jumping over terrain to skip bosses, sorry, I just don’t. And if we are okay with this, we should be okay with a lot more things. And as I said I dont think thats a bad idea, as long as we are consistent in our choices.

^^ Great post. Exploits don’t seem to be so black and white. People seem to be willing to accept some things that are unintended but not others.

As for the 1-shotting being allowed in records… top kek at any guild that actually uses it in a record. Personally I’d be too humiliated to do something like that; it’d be equivalent to saying that Lupicus is too hard and that we’re giving up.

Plus as Dub said, it actually doesn’t save any time. It’s faster to burst him in the middle and use a mesmer’s feedback for it.

SC’s p3 was actually pretty interesting. Solid mesmer reflect kill but also their bloopers accidently going over to phase 3 with too much damage.

Eh, I honestly have no idea why so many people mention being impressed by this as if it’s much of an achievement to nearly burst him from phase 2. Phase 3 skips aren’t new and they’ve been done plenty of times before, and they didn’t even manage it that time. I don’t see what’s interesting personally :P

That they simply accidentally skipped phase2 in the bloopers was the impressive thing. The other was just refreshing more than impressive.

Right, I’m nearing the last straw. My crew’s guardian has somehow decided that playing an AH healer with hammer is the way to go in high level fractals and has gone 2/0/6/6/0.

I really don’t know, someone enlighten me please.

Try explaining to him that AH is self only, I know that’s what hit me and got me to stop thinking of it as a viable build in PVE way back. Hammer isn’t bad, blocking fire/water fields sucks but hey perma protection is nice. Same thing with Mace.

Giving up your blind spam without the 3 points in radiance though is a big no-no if you want to be a supportive guardian. Giving up Master of Consecrations is also a bad idea unless you know it won’t be used.

I’m ok with non meta, I’m ok with not focusing fully on DPS, but playing selfish is simply that, by going with an AH build he’s building to make his own play easier not the play of his group.

If he wants to play a fully support healer type thing he could at least do something like :
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fVAQNAS5dlsApVo9CxZI8DNBARlbREh2FAYHD9wPA-ThxGwAAeCAB3fU+JW3AhLCgf1fgqEEA-e
And before someone gives me crap, No I wouldn’t actually suggest it, just saying, there are dozens of better ways to play with a better focus on healing and team support, a 20660 build is simply as bad as you can get, no damage and little support. I do think there are non meta ways to make things easier at a sacrifice of time though, I use to play a setup with friends we called “braindead meta” which did just that, but it got boring

Either way GL, I’m sure he’s enjoying feeling unbeatable and ignoring the fact that he’s not helping at all

Lately I started bringing Mace in there if I don’t have a competent Ele blasting might for us (I hate blocking fire fields). With that + Focus + Shelter + Dodges + FR pretty easy to keep upright. Pull with Focus4, works like a charm.

What the heck is tween style?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tween

Tween (demographic), people between ages 11 and 12

So what use to be termed a pre-teen? ok I guess. I’ve heard it just never really knew what the heck it meant.

as in OMG y u gotta b liek dat

… It’s sad but I have a lot of friends who message like that in their mid to late 20’s. I remember chatting on AIM while typing a paper for school one time and while I was typing the paper catching myself using ‘u’ and ‘r’… well I gave up on using that style of short hand right then.

Aye, there’s certainly a difference between going full bore on Lupi and slowplaying a solo attempt. If they’re slowplaying it I’d be annoyed I guess.

Personally before I make any character I see what I can do style wise in the wardrobe.

I haven’t found any male human looks for any armor type that I really like. Some decent ones but nothing I really like. That’s why it’s one of two race/gender combos I don’t have, just Human Male and Charr Female, everything else is covered, with multiple Asura’s of course

Well, since I’ve already done 3 Asura master-race. I’d probably have to go with a Human. I haven’t done join the circus yet, and I hear it’s pretty good, so I’d have to check that out.

… should make it 4 Asura, I mean you already know it’s the master-race

I’m a fan of the “never give up” mentality so even then I’d no confirm the kick That said, if it was a cleric/nomad warrior on lupi… yeah… I’d kick him quite quickly to save us all an hour of waiting while he afks and auto wins

I’ll read through the guides linked and go from there. For now changing the traits and weapons has made the character viable. Still broke from making the carrion gear, but will switch over to new gear when I can afford it.

Is there any benefit to mixing gear types? (i.e. half zerker, half rampager, or all zerker, but knights trinkets, etc.)

There can be, but I’ll say that I’d go with zerk trinkets as eventually you’ll want to go full zerk once you master the use of active defense (at least in PVE) and gear is acquireable through multiple means. You can go to WvW and get cheap sets (remember though you can’t salvage to get runes back). You can get drops with the right stats. You can do Dungeons and buy the gear with those tokens. Or, you can craft it up.

To add though, steer clear of Rampager, it’s not that good. Knights gear + zerk trinkets is a pretty common “starter set” for PVE, sub in Soldier if you need more passive defense, or possibly Valkyrie if you want the HP because conditions are what’s killing you (that’s what I started with on my Ele).

Either way GL.

I don’t think people will refuse to do a tactic they hate in their runs, spoj, but I do think people will simply not play that format at all if it allows tactics that they deem cheesy or lame. Even if they do get a faster time, it isn’t satisfying to them because they feel cheap, and so they simply don’t run at all. That diminishes the community, and is a very real concern we shouldn’t treat cheaply.

The thing about jumping puzzles is we know ANet considers them exploits. If you use them and sell a path, they will ban you, and they’ve fixed pathing exploits innumerable since the game’s release. Additionally, they’re liable to fix the remaining ones at any given time should they become widely known/used. That would create a huge annoyance for the GW2 speedclearing community because then we’d have to have a meta reset for a dungeon any time a jumping skip was closed. In lieu of those issues, I really don’t think there should be any doubt about keeping jumping puzzles in speedclears disallowed.

I think for issues that are more nebulous, or are simply a clever use of mechanics that trivializes content or does something potentially unexpected, I lean more towards keeping them allowed. If ANet outright says “doing X is an exploit and we’re going to fix it”, then I think we can ban them from speedclears safely.

I know one dev had someone how him the Lupi WOR thing and said it was unintended and they would look into. Granted it was within a guild that the dev plays with and not publically on the forums but either way it was labeled an exploit. Yet… it’s allowed.

The idea that these rules are to prevent exploits I think is wrong. The fact that we’re even discussing this sigil is proof of that. The point of the rules is simply to create a playing field where people can eliminate what they feel cheapens the experience.

I think you hit it spot on in your last post, it’s just simply that the mentality is not much different than the PHIW mentality. “You can’t do this because it’s dumb/cheapens the experience/an exploit”.

You’re running meta, those guys were simply dumb. The only thing you could have done better is used the Bandit sigil.

I think Rising makes a good point for restricted runs. But, It’s simply dumbing things down to create more competition.

Why shouldn’t jumping puzzles be allowed? Well because it rules out a whole bunch of people who simply suck at jumping puzzles, or rules out people unwilling to restart a run because they screw it up. I can easily see where people would call it dumb or unfun, but it’s in the same regard as the PHIW crowd look at the meta stuff now.

The community approval of the restricted ruleset was nearly unanimous and the popularity is quite well proven. That’s all that really matters.

I wonder why the use of this sigil seems fine to so many when other things have been banned that fit similar situations.

I’m just curious, in the end doesn’t matter to me

How popular would anything be if a label of basically “they’re cheating” was tagged to it?

Personally I just like seeing the variety of techniques people can use to complete things, that’s what interests me more than the race for the best time. I think many would agree that fighting to shave a few seconds off using the same strategies isn’t as entertaining as seeing new strategies. Not that this comment is really on topic, just saying.

To add to what I said earlier. Why do we not allow jumping puzzle stuff in runs? Why do we not allow the double wall trick? It’s because it’s pretty obvious that it’s not intended, right? This one seems even more obvious, it says it won’t work, but it does…if the sigil said “will ignore immunities” sure, but it doesn’t.

That said I don’t disagree with spoj’s earlier post of letting things be free game.
