An overlay seems like an ideal way to solve your predicament, but there’s likely none available that do what you need it to do. I’d recommend looking around to see if anyone you know can whip one up (an overlay that just blocks out part of the UI shouldn’t be too hard to make, theoretically); alternatively, maybe someone here is proficient at such stuff.

In the meantime, don’t play a necro. :P

GW2 really doesn’t like overclocking. I’d suggest trying resetting to factory settings and see if that fixes the problem or not. If it doesn’t, you can just set the values again.

Try this, as suggested by Tech Support Ashley Segovia in a thread regarding exactly the same issue:

The missing mouse cursor issue is often caused by having mouse pointer trails enabled. Please follow these instructions to disabled the pointer trails.

1. Click on the Windows start button.

2. Select ‘Control Panel’.

3. For Windows XP: Double-click on the Mouse icon.

For Windows 7 and Vista: Click on ‘Hardware and Sound’ then select ‘Mouse’.

4. Go to the ‘Pointer Options’ tab and look for the ‘Visibility’ section.

5. In the ‘Visibility’ section, un-check the box next to ‘Display pointer trails’.

6. Click on OK.

Hope this helps!

Le edit: Some other things that reportedly worked for others in the past include ALT+TABbing a few times, changing the mouse’s USB slot, or changing the mouse entirely. I’d strongly recommend trying Ashley’s solution first though.

learn some color theory.

Where can I do this?

Not even kidding, if there is such a thing I want to study it.

I kept my books when I was studying for my Graphic Design degree, you can simply look for books on various subjects like color or text in design, applying texture, color blending and optical illusion using color. It’s easy to just self teach yourself a lot of this stuff, but just knowing about the color wheel, complements, supplements, contrasts, etc is all you really need to know.

Cool, I’ll have a look for it next time I hit up the library then.

It’s just one of those random things I find interesting (and entirely pointless as I don’t work with it in any way) and would like to learn at least some basics in. The way I pick dyes nowadays is mostly just trial-and-error until I find something that doesn’t look too terrible…

/age does give you all the data you need.

Each year consists of 365 days, except for Feb 29th which comes around every four years. This hasn’t happened since the game was launched, so you will get your second birthday gift when your character is (365*2) 730 days old or more.

Likewise, with some basic maths, you can calculate exactly which day the character was created from that, if that’s what interests you.

Achievements are account-wide, so there’s unfortunately no way to tell which were completed by any particular character on your account.

Ah, I see. Then yes, it is clearly either an error on the recipient’s (ArenaNet’s) end, or a communication error between sender and recipient regarding a piece of account information.

Thing is, both seem unlikely, as neither should generate a client-side crash but rather some form of error code. I’m both stumped and intrigued – do keep us updated on what Support have to say about it.

What do Asura eat?

in Asura

Posted by: Jigain.8231

Jigain.8231

^I do not know if eating plants or animals mostly makes you herbivor or carnivore I do not think is such a universal rule. With such a rule is like eliminating the omnivore category.

It’s all about the main source of nutrition.

If the main source of nutrition is flora, the creature is a primary consumer and from that the derived term is herbivore. Even if the creature consumes a small amount of meat, as long as it doesn’t make up a significant part of the sustenance the creature requires on a regular basis, the creature still is a primary consumer. Examples of herbivores, alongside those I’ve already mentioned in this thread, include elk, guinea pigs, and horses.

If the main source of nutrition is fauna, AND if the creature hunt the fauna itself (keep this caveat in mind for later), the creature is a secondary consumer called a carnivore. As with the herbivore, even if the creature consumes a small amount of flora it doesn’t invalidate their status as a carnivore. Examples include wolves, lions, and polar bears.

If the creature has a diet consisting of both flora and fauna, where neither is the dominant source of nutrition over the other, and the fauna they eat are hunted by the creature itself (again, this caveat), the creature is an omnivore – it is both a primary and a secondary consumer. Examples of this include rats, bears, and hedgehogs.

These are the three primary categories of classification among the fauna, but depending on how detailed you’d like to go you could further split it down. I won’t go into too much detail, but some fun things to know would be that humans, like vultures, are classified as scavengers rather than omnivores, because we generally don’t hunt our meat ourselves (leaving the hunting and/or killing to some very few specialized individuals), that you can further classify carnivores into (for example) insectivores and piscivores, and likewise herbivores can be classified down into things like folivores and granivores.

The more you know!

Calling unwanted Target

Actually, killing the target (in many cases) leaves the called target on the dead body until it despawns, you leave the immediate area or you call another target…..

Huh, interesting. Far as I can recall, the target symbol has always vanished immediately for me as soon as the called target dies. That said, it’s not a function I use often, it’s mostly something that accidentally occurs while I’m running around with CTRL pressed, and happen to click on someone.

If you call the same target twice it just relists your call in the chat window (it does NOT remove it).

Myth busted!

Wanna see how a baboon kill a poor baby antilope and eats it also flees there still meat and I think gorillas do the same thing eat flees .

Like pandas, they are a primary consumer – meaning they get the vast majority of their nutrition from vegetation. This means both baboons and gorillas are herbivores. Primary consumer = herbivore.

And about pandas for some reason their body is better adapted to eat meat.

Completely irrelevant as they, like aforementioned baboons and gorillas, are primary consumers, and therefore herbivores. Whether a creature is a carnivore (or omnivore) has absolutely nothing to do with what they COULD be eating, it’s all about their ACTUAL source of nutrition.

Now about the Azura are the wurms equiped with a tough whatever they have to cover their internal organs?

As these wurms aren’t actual creatures that we, as real people, could dissect and study, this is really anyone’s guess. However, based on certain available drops, it seems likely they do have some form of husk or carapace – which is why I stated from the very beginning they were likely to be in pre-surface diets of asura.

Gorills-They are not sharper then a humans at least the females.

Still a herbivore.

Pandas-They do eat meat 1% of their diet is meat and its said that in the past the proccent was higher.

Herbivore is defined as a primary consumer. Pandas qualify. Still a herbivore.
Further the last part of your statement is pure speculation.

Hippo-only 4 sharp teeth and are for fighting

Still a herbivore.

Fruit bats-The fruits are easier to eat if you remove the tough part to get to the tasty stuff and sharp teeth help.

Yes, they are herbivores.

I’m not sure why you’re trying to argue on this point, but here’s some more animals with sharp teeth you could try to prove are not herbivores: baboons, rhinoceros, peccary (or javelina for the US audience), musk deer, and camels.

SPOILER! All My Feels...

in Living World

Posted by: Jigain.8231

Jigain.8231

Some personal story spoilers in this one. You have been warned.

I’ll be honest, I’m getting kind of sick of the sylvari focus by now. The personal story was great, with a nice blend of races and personalities, up until the point of your Order partner being killed off. Now that actually managed to get an emotional response out of me, particularly Mister Tibbles (best character so far) and to some degree Sieran (which, while sylvari, had a very vibrant personality).

Then Trahearne happened. I won’t go into detail about everything I felt was wrong with him as a character, as I’ve already talked about it at length in threads better suited for it, but let’s just say I’d consider that the worst character of the game to date. And sadly, we were stuck with him until the end of the personal story.

Moving over to the living story, where we discount seasonal events for Halloween, Christmas and the like, we first had Flame and Frost. That was eventually revealed as having been planned by Scarlet, a sylvari. Then there was the Southsun deal, which featured Canach, a sylvari, as the bad guy. Followed by Dragon Bash and Sky Pirates of Tyria, which again featured the work of Scarlet in the form of Aetherblade pirates. Bazaar of the Four Winds was a nice break that didn’t actually feature a major bad guy. Then the Queen’s Jubilee thing, where Scarlet was actually revealed for the first time, again featured as the primary bad guy. Twilight Assault, which was even more Scarlet nonsense. Tower of Nightmares, more Scarlet. Fractured, more Scarlet and the first mention of ley lines. Origins of Madness, even more Scarlet. Edge of the Mists, also Scarlet. Escape from Lion’s Arch and the following Battle for Lion’s Arch, also Scarlet. This is where Scarlet finally dies. And naturally, ever since we’ve been dealing with more Scarlet despite the fact she’s dead and buried.

The point is, ever since two years ago, every new piece of story in the game has been about “look at this sylvari”. And that’s even AFTER most of the personal story being about “look at this sylvari”. And now I’m supposed to actually care about the leader of the sylvari, some big tree that not even my sylvari character knows anything about?

Sorry, but the only way for me to actually care about the well-being of a character is to first know the characteristics of that character, being able to identify myself with it, and then follows sympathy for it. Tybalt did it great. So did Zojja. Taimi as well, to a point. Sadly I haven’t even been presented with the characteristics of the Pale Tree – I quite literally only know it’s a tree, it leads the sylvari, and somehow it has something to do with a dream. That’s all. I cannot relate to any of that.

Sorry to say, but I didn’t feel a scrap of concern about the avatar of the Pale Tree, and I didn’t waste any time leaving the Oompaloompa Chamber to check on the people with more character to them.

What do Asura eat?

in Asura

Posted by: Jigain.8231

Jigain.8231

Asura are omnivores, just like all the other races of Tyria. They eat of every commonly available foodstuffs. What they find tasty, on the other hand, seems to be a personal choice rather than a choice of race.

If you’re asking what their diet consisted of before surfacing, on the other hand, there’s little evidence to go by. They’d most likely have grown vegetables in some sort of hydroponics basin, in addition to wild growing flora such as lichen or fungi. Most likely meat as well, either farmed (possibly siamoth) or wild (such as wurms).

And before anyone comments on the teeth, sharp teeth do not immediately mean carnivore. Lots of herbivores have very sharp teeth, including but not limited to gorillas, pandas, hippopotamusi, and fruit bats.

Gaming laptop capable of 60fps at max

It will always be more cost-effective to buy an equivalent stationary PC than a laptop for gaming, unless we see some major changes on the laptop market. Additionally, overall the market’s top performing PC will always greatly outperform the market’s top performing laptop.

That aside, like sirsquishy said, it’s very much possible. Mind you the cost goes up exponentially with your demands on graphics and performance, so I’d recommend you take a good while to figure out how low you could set the game and still enjoy it, then base your purchase around that.

GW2 requires the file to be in a specific location, much like how every single other game requires their files to follow a specific structure and can break if you start moving files around for no reason. I don’t see how this surprises you.

Also, the local.dat file on my system is merely 48MB large. That’s maybe the size of ten pictures from a decent digital camera. If your boot drive is full because of a 50MB file, you really should upgrade your boot drive ASAP. And if your local.dat file is significantly larger than 50MB, that’s something completely different.

Going from 4670K to 8350, What to expect?

I already sold off the 4670K, and bought the 8350. I didn’t buy it purely for gaming though

I think a lot of people on this forum (and other game-focused forums, for that matter) cannot really grasp this concept. Using a CPU for something other than games? Preposterous! Pinheaded! Poppyc- no, wait, can’t say that because of censoring. Poppykittens do sound interesting though.

Yeah, if you’re planning to do other stuff, particularly video encoding and the like (which I’ve worked with myself for a year), I’d strongly recommend sacrificing a bit of single-threaded power in favor of multi-threading. And like I said before, the 8350 works just fine with GW2. I reckon you’ll see a small dip in performance, but not enough to make you say “this game is unplayable now”.

I’m not sure if the continuing stream of obviously unrelated disconnection issues are because of people mistakenly posting these in the wrong thread (namely this one), or if moderators keep merging other threads with this one despite the threads dealing with completely different issues.

Perhaps we could get a moderator or equivalent to rename the thread into something less ubiquitous than the standard error code, and more along the lines of “Character Lockout Bug [merged]”, to help alleviate both potential incomes of incorrectly-placed posts?

High-end pc - FPS stuck on 20

Lag, also known as latency, has nothing to do with your graphics. It’s quite literally the time it takes for your computer to send your commands via the internet to the datacenter running GW2 and that same datacenter responding to your computer, again via the internet, as to what’s changed in the game world.

There’s not a whole lot you can do to reduce your latency. If you’re in the EU and you’re playing on NA servers, or vice versa, you could get improved latency values by changing to your own region’s servers. You could shut down other programs running in the background that also use your internet connection, such as Skype, Mumble, internet browsers or the like. There are some additional odds and ends that’ll shave a few milliseconds off your latency, but they’re too numerous to detail here – just have a search on Google for “reduce latency” and you should find some.

Again, to reiterate, latency has practically nothing to do with your PC. It is mostly subject to the amount of traffic on the lines between you and the server.

Well, it could be a motherboard issue, or a USB issue, or a mouse issue, or a Windows language issue. Or a Sticky Keys issue, which would seem the most likely, but you’ve confirmed it’s not that.

If it’s a motherboard issue, there’s not really any way to tell. Not to my knowledge at least.

If it’s a mouse issue, trying with a different mouse should solve it.

If it’s a USB issue, shifting your USB plugs over into previously unused sockets should fix the issue. If you’re testing this, you might want to disconnect any unnecessary USB devices while testing, such as printers, external harddrives, and popcorn machines.

If it’s a Windows language issue, go into Control Panel → Region and Language → Keyboards and Languages → Change keyboards… and ensure you don’t have more than one listed under Installed services.

Finally, I’ll add one more thing. It’s kind of a homebrew fix, a mixture of part quack “fix-it-all” medicine, part “repeat three times in front of a mirror” myth, and part “heal minor illnesses with everyday household groceries” home remedy. I know people who claim to have used this fix for these kinds of problems and never experienced the issue ever again. Next time it happens, try pressing both CTRL buttons on your keyboard at the same time, then both ALT buttons, and finally both SHIFT buttons.

Let us know how it turns out.

I had this exact issue, oh, maybe one, one and a half years ago. But only on one character – my thief. If I played him, within 30 minutes or so the computer would just completely shut down. I just resorted to never playing that character, and everything was fine.

Had a bit of a hiatus, came back, decided to try leveling the thief. Not a single issue playing for 6+ hours in a single day. Haven’t had a crash on that character since. Or any other characters, for that matter.

Nothing was changed hardware-wise on my system. The only thing I can think of is that I updated graphics card drivers and such in the time between the two events. Not saying that’ll fix it for you, but that’s quite literally the only thing that changed on my end.

The best way really is to let the launcher download it all. Is it possible for you to leave it running overnight?

Also, as a side note, the launcher does resume downloading if you close it down at any point. If you download 50%, then shut it down, next time you start it up it’ll download the remaining 50%. Mind you it will say “0%”, but what that means is it has downloaded 0% of the remaining data.

Just want to clarify. Lower case b is bits, upper case B is bytes. 300kb/s is roughly 30KB/s which is 105MB/h.

Ah, yes. You are correct of course. It’s been too long since I studied networking, I’ve forgotten most of it. :P

Did a repair, and so far not experienced a problem. While it’s too early to say it’s definitively fixed, I have been playing non-stop for two hours now, on the same map and characters that gave me the crashes earlier, whereas before I played for 30 minutes at most before a crash occured.

Le edit: Of course, crash happened ten minutes later.

Long story short, Ashley spotted a destabilizing point in the OP’s system and pointed out that he should get that fixed. Why is it so wrong of her to help someone create a stable system? Please explain that.

Listen. I know Ashley is trying to help. The reason her answer is wrong is because it is basically like saying “go buy a new PC”. If you don’t understand why it is wrong, there is nothing more I can explain to you. No offense.

So what’s the alternative? Ashley saying “we’ll work on it”, knowing full well that the OP has an unstable system that’ll most likely never be able to run GW2 without some modifications, no matter how they patch the game?

Or, if I phrase it differently – if you were Ashley, having spotted the reason why the OP cannot enjoy the game, what would you have said?

This is not a case of the White Knight Syndrome, it’s a (quite obvious) case of honesty and integrity.

Or did I use a wrong unit of measurement that is kbps (when it should be Kbps)?

Math time!

k (kilo, x1000) is the correct prefix, whereas K isn’t mathematically correct but is sometimes used for aesthetical purposes. Your usage of kbps (kilobytes per second) was correct.

On a related note, 300 kbps (kilobytes per second) equals 2400 kBps (kilo*bits* per second), which equals 2.34375 MBps (megabits per second). This because one byte is comprised of eight bits, thus 300 * 8 = 2400.

If your connection is advertised to be around 1-3 MBps, 300 kbps is actually above average.

Heres my error message, still cant find arenanet log !

If you have Windows 7 or later, open the Start menu and in the search bar, type "%appdata%" (without the quotation marks, of course) and hit enter. This should immediately open up the Roaming folder. Then just enter the Guild Wars 2 sub-folder and there’s your ArenaNet.log file.

Alternatively, if you have "show hidden folders" enabled, you can find it under the path
[X]:/Users/[UserName]/AppData/Roaming/Guild Wars 2/ArenaNet.log
where [X] is your OS drive (usually C) and [UserName] is the username you’re logged into on your Windows installation.

If you have another OS than Windows, I don’t really know how to find it, I’m afraid.

To follow up, haven’t had any disconnects with the same specific symptoms (or any at all, in fact) since the update on the 12th.

From what I can see, a lot of the issues reported since appear to be different errors (as they do not follow the previously established pattern of appearing when attempting to log in on a character on a specific map IP). Comments such as “can’t even play for 5 minutes” and “dropping back to character select screen every 3-5 minutes” or “dc-ing every few minutes” hint at the respective issues being distinctively separate from the issue that the thread was created for.

Not saying the issue is fixed for everyone, and my sympathies for those still affected, but just wanted to clarify that most of the ones posting here about disconnect issues are not suffering from the character lockout issue.

It is true that it might cause an issue. But again, they claim to support that configuration.

I don’t think ANet has ever come out with a statement saying “yes, your specific system will run this game guaranteed”.

The minimum requirements is a baseline for computer performance, nothing else. Yes, a computer with 2GB of RAM could potentially run the game, at the lowest settings and in an ideal environment. You know what’s not an ideal environment? Having an unstable configuration, such as running an unstable system due to being blocked by the 3 GB Barrier. Of course this works the other way too, which is why ANet has repeately discouraged overclocking. It can destabilize your system, and even if it means you can run the game fine on maximum settings because of it, you may very well be prone to crashes and the like.

Long story short, Ashley spotted a destabilizing point in the OP’s system and pointed out that he should get that fixed. Why is it so wrong of her to help someone create a stable system? Please explain that.

On another note, while upgrading to a 64-bit system would be the ideal way to stabilize the system, you could also go the other way of course. RAM sticks are much cheaper than a 64-bit OS license (at least if you’d like to go Microsoft), and I haven’t even checked to see if the processor is 64-bit or not (in which case that’d need to be upgraded as well), so an alternative, sub-standard solution could be to just pull out the RAM sticks and putting in 3 GB of RAM.

Le edit: Just peeked, it is indeed a 64-bit processor. I would strongly recommend investing in a 64-bit OS.
