Warrior insane damage

Here I came to this forum for some helpful insight, and while a few people were hospitable, almost everyone else practically responded with “troll” or “hurr durr thief”.

I’m sorry I’m not the best as spvp, and I’m sorry I play thief, but I was really hoping there’d be more people here willing to help out a fellow player. Sure we play different classes, but I don’t see that as a reason to be enemies… I never said that the warrior is overpowered, I just stated what happened to me and my thoughts on that. Thanks to the people who were mature with your responses and actually tried helping me, I’ll keep an eye out for that animation and try and avoid it next time.

And to everyone else, please understand that just because I’m having an issue fighting a certain build of your class doesn’t mean I’m ‘trolling’. Some people are just here for help.

It’s just weird you had not run into it, HB warriors are so common. That skill that makes you swing and swing roots the warrior in place, so if you break stun and evade, you rarely take full damage. The other option is that you were rooted, in which case condition removals will help. Warriors in that build rarely have stability so you can interrupt after breaking the stun, or if you are rooted.

I only have one stunbreaker and it was on cooldown whenever the warrior showed up, unlucky sure, but it’s pretty upsetting that if my stunbreaker in on CD there’s nothing I can do…

So I just fought a warrior multiple times and I couldn’t even come close to killing him, he’d charge me, I couldn’t move, then he’d swing his weapon rapidly and my health dropped to 0 in roughly a second. WTF just happened? I remember thief having a similar thing, but it got nerfed to the ground quickly…

i cant find it now, but i know for a fact that someone did the calculations and tests and found out that the game IS having some sort of wrong calculation for widescreen rendering resulting in a much narrower field of view than for 4.:3 monitors , so there is something funky about it though i admit i dont understand it all very well

True, but that bug lowers the fov to 65, if they fix the bug it would only increase the fov by 10 degrees, hardly praiseworthy.

When I started playing GW2 I immediately fell in love with the thief, mostly because I’ve only ever played Stealth/assassin type classes in other mmos and rpgs. I love the initiative system and playing and building your class how you enjoy playing. I also really love the dual weapon system, how your 3rd skill changes based on the weapon set.

However, when I try to play another class I become bored incredibly easy. The cooldowns are not fun to play with and you can’t really customize your class to your playstyle. While other classes have simple builds, Thief has more complex one, thanks to being able to specialize more in depth, since skills don’t have cooldowns.

Am I doomed to a life of thief, or is there something I’m missing with other classes that make them more exciting?

General Poll: Is the stealth ability the "oh s%*t" button?

in Thief

Posted by: Jjiinx.8795

Jjiinx.8795

Some thief builds can rarely stealth, some thief builds CANNOT stealth, and some builds deeply incorporate stealth into their build.

So to answer your question, it depends on the spec. However, in my experience, stealth is most of our survivability, we can remove it from our builds, but there’s nothing that makes up for it and the end result is we die way too fast, so most of us only stealth because we have to, regardless of whether or not we want to, if that makes any since…

Isn’t this thread called “Fantasy THIEF skills”? If so, then why do people keep bringing up Assassin’s when that class doesn’t exist in this game? Thieves are NOT Assassin’s, why is that such a hard concept for some people? It seems like more than half of the suggestions in here are based around the assumption that Thieves are Assassins, when in fact, they aren’t. Be more realistic or re-name the thread.

LOL, Thieves are Assassins and Assassins are Thieves.

Thief [theef]
noun, plural thieves.
a person who steals, especially secretly or without open force; one guilty of theft or larceny.

As·sas·sin [uh-sas-in]
noun, plural assassins.
a murderer, especially one who kills a politically prominent person for fanatical or monetary reasons.

Some suggestions with the "Revealed" debuff

in Thief

Posted by: Jjiinx.8795

Jjiinx.8795

Some stealth abilities should ignore the “Revealed” debuff, mostly considering utilties with long cooldowns and traits, such as Blinding Powder and Instinctual Response. It’s really aggravating when you use one of these utilities or one of these traits kick in, but they fail with “IMMUNE” because you had 0.01 seconds left of revealed.

I personally would be in favor of a revealed rework entirely, in my personal opinion, revealed should subtract your stealth time by it’s remaining duration, if tweaked a bit, you wouldn’t be able to spam stealth skills, but at the same time it would be much more tolerable.

Thief vs Warrior?

My room mate plays warrior and I play thief, he hasn’t beaten me in 1v1 pvp yet

I play P/D condition thief, my build is: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fYQQRAqY8YlcmKPHfy9E95EB3Dma0k69gsj1saFoJA

I personally gear towards Toughness, Healing, and most importantly Condition Damage

Basically stealth with Cloak and Dagger, this blinds the warrior and grants you regeneration, open up with sneak attack, applying 5 stacks of bleed, make sure to take advantage of the caltrops to apply more bleeds and shadow refuge when you’re hurting.

Your basic rotation would be Cloak and Dagger > Sneak Attack > Vital Shot > Vital Shot > Repeat.

This keeps regeneration up most of the time, keeps the bleeds on thick, and keeps the enemy blinded. If he’s using an attack that you need to interrupt and you can’t blind him use Steal to daze him.

This is the build I’ve leveled with since day 1 and I haven’t grown bored of it yet.

There are plenty of other threads about that. Check my signature for one of them.

The PC standard isn’t 90 degrees. The standard is letting people change their FOV, because the idea FOV for someone is determined by two factors:
– Distance from screen
– Size of screen
Different setups will have different ideal FOVs.

90 is just a decent default.

Just seems flat out odd that it’s not an option and that they seem against it so much.

Hell the auto attack does more damage then this.

The autoattack doesn’t daze the enemy and prevent you from taking damage, does it?

I play P/D thief mostly, but switched to S/P to try out this Pistol Whip, and I found it was not only too strong, but it was boring as well. It’s not useless now by far, you get a daze, a dodge, and an aoe attack. If you think Pistol Whip is useless now, try going Pistol/Dagger, you’re almost entirely single target, deal less damage, and if you don’t kite properly then you die much quicker. Not only that but P/D doesn’t have an ‘i win’ skill.

I play the game entirely using autotarget, and it’s never been very good, for example, I’m attacking an enemy and aiming DIRECTLY at him and for no reason halfway through the fight the game decides that I should be attacking the enemy off the screen far to the right instead. In fact most of the issues I’ve had with it was the game deciding I’m aiming at an enemy I’m obviously not aiming at.In one scenario It’s even forced me to attack some enemy on the other side of a wall during a boss fight…

I’m sure if it would cause no harm they would do it.. you don’t think they test this sort of thing?

The only ignorance here is the one you are displaying.

We are talking about FOV, not some magical, abstract concept that only the people in the development circles know about.

You do know that this would require a complete reworking of the system they use to cull objects and players.. further exasperating the issue with players not popping in.

So yeah, I did my research.. .yet I’m ignorant.

There’s a hack some people threw together that increases the FOV without any issues… if a hacking team was able to do it without any drawbacks why can’t a paid development team?

This however is a place where players are helping players, and in this case the people who can help you are not players but the devs. So follow his link and support the suggestion.

What are the advantages to thief?

in Thief

Jjiinx.8795

is this yet another post from a low-level thief who still hasn’t figured out how to solo PvE?

yes, its slightly more complicated than playing a warrior or guardian. if you prefer those more straightforward playstyles, then by all means go and play that class instead.

its strange to assume that there is some inherent deficiency with the Thief class though just because you haven’t figured out how to play it properly yet. trust me when i say it though: there is no deficiency.

i’m able to kill single opponents in PvE without taking a single point of damage. i’m able to kill 5 level 80 regular mobs at the same time while only taking minimal damage. i’m able to solo 3 veterans at the same time. i’m able to solo champions certain champions (if there won’t be any adds later in the fight, which is kinda rare actually, so usually can’t do this). and i don’t doubt that other players can do similar things. and i don’t doubt that other players on other classes can also do similar things. i don’t think there’s anything special about what i’m doing or the class i’m playing. i think that any player that has learned how to play their class can get results like this.

so either keep practicing until you learn what you’re doing, or just quit and play a class you like better instead. there’s nothing wrong with that.

but its weird to ask “what advantage?”. what’s really behind that question? there’s no “advantage” to any class. they all just do what they do. if you learn how to play a class you’ll find all kinds of advantages, tactics, build strategies, and effective techniques. so go and play and learn them. its not like you click an “advantage” button. you just keep playing until you know the answer to that question.

TL;DR: “I’m better than you, learn to play”

Possibility of making the 3 'Light' skills viable?

in Thief

Posted by: Jjiinx.8795

Jjiinx.8795

The problem with that is that you would lose the extra stats you get from the offhand weapon as well, which mean to achieve any sort of real usefulness they would have to be INSANELY more powerful, leaving the 1 and 2 skills on your weapon useless by comparison, since those cant be buffed to the same extend as those can be used by dual wielders too

The skills wouldn’t need to be “INSANELY more powerful” like you say, they’d just really need to be “not rubbish”. As long as the 3 skills filled some sort of niche that the dual wielding skills don’t fill, then they’d have their own use without being more powerful than other skills. For example, if the sword’s light skill reduced Steal’s cooldown when you struck someone with it, then a sword thief would have a unique steal focused style. These skills don’t need to be more powerful to be useful, they just need to be different.

Possibility of making the 3 'Light' skills viable?

in Thief

Posted by: Jjiinx.8795

Jjiinx.8795

Thief has 3 unique skills that most people never see, since they only appear when you don’t have an offhand weapon, these are the ‘light’ skills (meaning light offhand). These unique skills are functional, but they only serve as training wheels until the thief gains another weapon to put into the offhand. These skills are the following:

Dagger – Twisting Fangs: <4> Spin in place, hitting nearby foes. Each his causes bleeding.

Sword – Stab: <4> Stab your foe.

Pistol – <5> Blast your foe with rapid fire from your pistol. 5 shots.

These skills, while technically usable, are downright bad, and this is intentional, since every class dual wields, there should be no reason for the thief to not dual wield, right? Well thief has an intriguing and unique system apart from every other class; Initiative. With the Initiative system, as opposed to Cooldowns, thief is punished less than other classes for having less weapon skills.

I’m very interested in the possibility of a new breed of single handed thieves, and all that would be required would be to increase the viability of these 3 skills. One of the main complaints about the Thief class is the lack of weapon selections, if the above skills were taken seriously, this would add 3 more viable weapon sets to the thieves arsenal.

In my opinion, this just seems like an easy and effective way to implement a lot more depth and customization to the class. I’d personally like to add my ideas here about what each skill should be, but I don’t think that’s my decision, I’d mostly just like to see these 3 skills buffed so I can finally enjoy an mmo where I’m not punished for NOT dual wielding.

I don't understand the point of designing off hand light skills

in Thief

Posted by: Jjiinx.8795

Jjiinx.8795

One question though JonPeters, what about giving thief (for all 3 of their weapons) 5 abilities with no offhand? I hear thieves complaining all the time about lack of variety, so why not throw in 3 new weapon loadouts? Just a thought

I would LOVE to play a thief with only a main hand weapon!! I don’t even care about a potential stat loss while playing without an offhand weapon.

I just think it would be so cool. Too much dual wielding in games lately, what ever happened to the classic thief/assassin character who only uses a single dagger? Why does every videogame character have to be Drizzt now?

Before, I was hoping thief would get more weapons, maybe offhand sword or torch, but now I’m sold on this idea, it would be a really cool alternative to thief weapon gameplay…

Also, if additional light offhand skills were added it would be really sweet to have weapon skills that influenced Steal somehow… I’ve always hoped thief would have weapon skills that had something to do with stealing…

EDIT: On second thought, we don’t even really need more light offhand skills for onehanded to be viable, just need the light off hand skills to be a little better or cheaper…

For example: the pistol light skill Repeater costs 5 initiative and shoots 5 times, if it cost 4 and also caused bleeding, and/or shadowstepped you away before firing the shots, it would make Pistol with no offhand really nice.

Twisting Fangs for Dagger / Light costs 4 initiative and makes you spin around, dealing aoe damage and bleed, but it would make Light offhand more viable if it gave you evasion while it casted and/or crippled enemies or caused vulnerability. (Side note; I REALLY love the asura animation for Twisting Fangs, it’s really a shame you only ever see it in the tutorial area)

Stab for sword is the only skill that would need to be reworked. Right now it costs 4 initiative and simply just deals a little bit of damage, but if it was changed to something like “Pickpocket: Stab your enemy, successful hit reduces Steal cooldown by X seconds” then it would be a great weapon to use with Light offhand

But realistically, I know something like this will probably never happen, I think the devs simply don’t want light offhand thieves to be a thing. It’s still fun to dream though
