Particle effects practicly writes itself too.
Just imagine that! Instead of chop… chop… chop…
Sputter… Bumbumbumbumb… RWRAAAAAAAAAA (Ding,ding ding!)
Please ANET!
This is the big thing I miss from the holy trinity — defined roles. This isn’t required in GW2 and as a result I see far less team work than in other MMOs. The video was spot on with regards to DPS is king in this game.
The funny thing is bunker seems king in PvP — sorta opposite which may explain the reliance on the defiance buff.
It should be noted I agree with roles, but not Predefined roles. Anet can still have their vison of everyone does a bit of everything to keep us from falling into the “LF1M TANK! or LF1M HEALER!” they want so desperatly to avoid.
Let’s take this as an example based on the new building blocks.
Player A goes down. Player B wants to Revive player A but knows if they do The will get slaughtered by Bosses’s regular attacks while they do so (Boss really hates player A and is smashing them in the downed state.)
Player B uses a blowout effect to knock Boss away and resses Player A before the Boss can return.
I want to see more of this sort of thing encourgaged to keep fights diverse and reationary rather then zerged. Any thoughts?
Somone just pointed out to me the most amazing thing in reguards to discusion of MF in Guild Wars 2. It really does bring new light on the phrase “A Picture is worth 1,000 words!” A big thanks to Tony.6028 for taking the time to make this. Nice ideas. I think you should outlines important points in your initial post.
Just so ANet devs going through the forums can quickly see what this is about.
Controling a boss seems unrewarding and useless at the moment, negating many builds on them. I wouldn’t mind if they hit harder or faster just as long as we can use some form of control on them at the RIGHT time.
Good idea mate, I’ll get right on that.

There is far more then a guarenteed gold in that chest, and if you do the events optimally it’s actually a very good reward for time invested.
Throwing more loot at the players is just going to make the rewards worth less and less. That’s inflation for you.
For a real solution check this out:
The few times crab Toss has come down to 2-4 players I ask if anyone needs the crabtacular. Any more then that and trying to get people who can’t even play the game to work together for that achivement is a lost cause I’m afraid.
Stop resurrecting threads just to spam your guide. It doesn’t make the game any more worth playing.
Quite a few of the threads mention the steep learning curve as the reason they don’t like it so I figure the more that understand it the more might get enjoyment out of it.
You have your opinion and I have mine.
This mini-game is so well designed. I love it. I hate to bash on sPvP but I feel like it would make a better e-sport. There is a great amount of depth in predicting your opponent’s move, faking, counter-faking, and anticipating everything that’s going on in the arena. Good players have lot of room to express their skills and at the same time the game is thought so that they can’t dominate all the time and so that even a complete noob can hold the crab at least once. And from a spectator’s point of view (if there was a spectator mode for this), what’s not to love about seeing the whole team getting rolled on by a giant karka (this and things like the fishing pole or a leaping plank make for great turn of events).
I REALLY hope it stays after the living story is gone. And I agree with you on your Esports comment as well!
It’s an amazingly well desinged and balanced game. It’s about prediction, counter-prediction fake outs and using the arena to your advantage.
Just because you are bad at it doesn’t been it’s badly designed. Some of my most memorable GW2 moments have come from this mini-game.
If you want to learn how to get better at this check out this post here:

I haven’t seen it happen in a while. I love it. It’s like a crazy multiball option for crab toss!
If you’re trying to be an AP leader then you should be happy this is a daily. I’m sure tehre are plenty of otehr AP OCDers out there as well that are having trouble with this. All you have to do is get better at crab toss then they are.
Also, I do this daily achivement EVERY day. I’m able to get it in 1-3 games.
This is a very well desinged Minigame. If you can’t/won’t learn it then IMO you don’t deserve to be on the AP leaderboards.
And if you don’t care about that then there are plenty of other achivements to do for your daily.
If you want to get better at crab toss have a look at this:

Ah… Finally. Thanks anet. However I am STILL going to keep clearing the Lyssa statue. You know why? Because this is one of the few, well desinged (mostly) and balanced boss events you have in the open world. If only all the world bosses were this well designed.
For thoese of you who want to know what this exploit was all about, OR want a guide on how to clear Lyssa look here:
A few more tips:
- - It’s very rarely the first person to pick up the crab that escapes with it. Allow your foe to pick up the crab then swipe it before they can move!
- - Throwing a Karka egg into a large mob while large ones are rolling around will most likley result in mega elimation points.
- - Don’t forget you have 2 attacks when you hold the crab! Ability 1 is a long stun, Ability 4 still works and can buy you that last second you need while waiting for sprint.
- - Ability 1 with the plank is useful for covering ground even if your foe is out of range. 1 to cover the distance, then 2 to clean up your foe!
- - The fishing rod is quite dificult to land a crab grab with. You must match your foes speed for it to hit. Also if there is a player between you and the path of the crab after a succesful hit THEY will get the crab, not you!
- - A dazed player can still dodge. But that’s all!
- - Swipe is not just for the crab but for items too! Just be sure not to steal from someone who might hold a grudge…
- - It’s tricky but you can throw the crab to an enemy player and as long as they are moving it will knock them down. You can swipe it right back before they can get back on their feet!
- - The ultimate way to do this is to throw the crab at somone in the path of a rolling Karka!
- - Make sure there are no karka heading for the crab when you try to pick it up! Let your foes do this and then run in and swipe it before they can get back up off the ground!
BTW if anyone happens to atch me online and feels like doing something in ORR give me a whisper and I’ll start up some statue clearing. I do it all the time.
Good rewards, A nice little challenge and Lyssa, Balthazar and grenth all require a little comunication to ensure they don’t fail.
I’m on Hendge Of Denravi.
Come on a trip to orr with me and I’ll demonstrate why it’s much better in it’s current state then its previous one.
Orr needs a major overhaul, I was at Straits of Devastation last night, it’s really abandoned and depressing when you have to do these events by yourself. And yes, I was on a high population server.
It needs to be more “user friendly”, and it needs to require less teamwork (since really there is no people and team). Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool when we players have to fight and make changes in the world, or else we’ll get swarmed by Risen, but if there’s no players, it’s just depressing.
/facedesk
What’s depressing is not that there are not many players out there, but WHY there are not many players out there and your suggested solution to get them out there.
I just went to la said grenth up,just to see what reply i got.
the reply i got was sod grenth stupid event and always fails.yeah going to la really works then.
I have guested, and most of the servers i been to was contested.
so again i should not go guesting to do an event when i’m on a full server anyway.it just shows ppl are avoiding these events now.
and sticking with the 10x easer ones the dragons. Also earn what?
A stupid rare that’s worth peanuts.
i do the events for fun not a stupid rare, but where’s the fun when no one is doing them or you/npc gets one shotted all the time by champs.
If i wanted easer rewards i would do the dragons all the time, and not complain on the forum to make these temples and other areas scale better and be more fun.
It’s the problem with the stae of Risk Vs. Reward in GW2.
Have a look at this and you’ll understand what I mean.
So, the answer is, if you want to have fun in Orr, leave your server?
No, the answer is to organize people to get kitten done on your own server. And if you really want it that badly and nobody else gives a kitten, go guest somewhere else if it means that much to you. As already stated, most of the temples can be done with about 5 people. The only exceptions to this are Balth and Grenth which are also both very easy if done right. For Balth, just get more than 1 set of reinforcements and make sure to AOE spam like crazy when the nobles appear. For Grenth, just AoE spam the kitten out of everything especially where the NPC is so that you immediately pull aggro away from him. These events aren’t made to be done by 3 players, how anti-climatic is that? Just go ask people in the maps and cities for help, or go ask your own guild or other people’s guilds for help. More-than-likely you’ll get enough people willing to help, then it’s all up to your skill. If you know what you’re doing, you’ll be fine. If you don’t, then you don’t deserve to conquer the temple.
Then why are they always contested on many servers?
That’s right because there a lot harder and grenth impossible with the one shot champ aoe at the last min of the event.
Hence why ppl don’t do them now on most servers.Of course they’re harder than they used to be, just like they should be. And the reason they’re uncontested is because everybody wants the reward with no effort put into the process. Nobody cares enough to go and say “Hey Lion’s Arch! We’re trying to capture (Temple Name here) and we could really use some more help!” because it’s easier to just complain on the forum about it being too hard just like you are doing right now. If you know how to properly pull aggro off of the NPC in time then you’ll have no problem with him getting 1-shot. If he still gets 1-shot then you – the players – are doing something wrong.
People don’t do them because nobody organizes the people.
You don’t have a clue or never done grenth lately.
we have enough ppl but 1 min before the end the champ wrath appears with his massive aoe and kill jones and us in one shot.
Also why should we run to la and cost us silver just to ask for more ppl and prob get abuse in the chat as well as the event failed in the mean time, with the messing about getting ppl.
The events are meant to scale are they not?
Just because your server can just about do it,does not mean every server can.
I wish we all had a good guild to carry us,because thats the only way grenth would get done with a bit of luck i might add.like i said you want a challenge do the dungeons that’s what there there for,but don’t rune events because they seem easer in your eyes.
as for the rewards a rare item wow i would rather not have it,as you get the same reward doing the dragons that are 10x easer.
I do HATE that NPC is glassy as heck. As soon as the Legendary priest goes down we res the fallen and form a line WELL in front of Jonez. We leave 1-4 up the back with blowout attacks to get mobs that spawn up back away fron jonez.
It’s the same with Balthazars pre-escort event. Unless you memorise the spawn and get between the mobs and the NPC’s it’s all over.
The funny thing is that with LESS players this is actually really easy as the mobs DMG is downscaled.
The real problem with these escort events is the guys we’re escorting do not scale up with the rest of the event.
But all that needs to be done is to make these NPC’s scale as well.
PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ANET DO NOT DUMB THIS GAME DOWN ANYMORE.
It’s becoming less of an MMO and more of a Cow-Clicker every day.
Go play on a more populated server then. I play on Tarnished Coast and every temple gets taken at least once a day. I also never see any of the 3 Orr zones empty. It’s either your server or your timezone that’s causing your problem.
Nope on des server its more pve than pvp.
There are plenty of ppl.
The temples were done all the time untill the stupid ninja patches, now they don’t get done at all.Maybe your’s gets done once a day prob by a skillful guild, but even once a day is pretty low.
they should be done all the time.
Also moving server or guesting is not the solution now is it.
it just shows they are too hard for the adv pugs simple as that.
My god they are borderline brainless easy as they are. Some tweaks could be used on a few (glass NPC’s in escorts are no fun) but the last thing GW2 needs to do is make things easier. My guild quite regularly attempts the statues, Lyssa/Dwyna/Melandru always get done why Balth/Greth depends on how badly pugs draw enemies to the glass NPCs.
You can do many of the staues with just 5 players. Here’s a guide for the lyssa statue, grab 4 freinds and go for it with this stratagey:
We’sa cookin’ uh somethin’ up.
-Bill
ROFLMAO!
imho there’s an ingamesystem missing, which shows people where big events are going on. Everytime I come by a boss area naturally, the boss is never up.
It is something I’d love to be implimented into the LFG system. Being able to get people to come help a large event in progress that you stumbled apon and can’t compelte solo would be nice.
All I can say is the karma vendor at the end of the Temple’s (So far all I know of is Balthazarr’s vendor) He gave pretty good armor. What I hate about it is that we cant maybe get at least one armor part free. It’s really costy with karma, unless you never use your karma.
The vendors as a reward for completing the events is a pretty nice touch. I also like how these bosses can drop som unique loot (I’ve only seen rings so far but it’s a nice touch.)
The lag at the end of the run skill isn’t lag, it’s intended. It’s so players are encouraged not to just chase the horder around. What I quite often do is grab a plank (or whatever I can get my hands on) and wait oposite the horde. Sooner or later somone comes chargeing out of there thinking their safe only to stop in front of me tapping my 2×4 on my hand.
If it does do that crap to you again (lag on everything) check out that resmon and see if there are any programs running there you don’t regonize. It might be spyware, It might be somone else leaching your connetion, It might be a bad connection.
Also don’t forget to run GW2 as Administrator.
Do you guys have any other challenges like this in the game (good rewards or not) that you feel are worth mentioning?
Let’s see some other suggestions. Most things for guilds. Yes, we have the missions but they’re what? Once a week for maybe 30 min? Right now, unless you’re a wvw guild there’s just not much to hold a guild together. Endgame content again unless you’re wvw or pvp where’s the end game? You either get all your gear instantly or you have to grind endlessly for months on end for your legendary. There’s nothing in between to hold your interest. Which is funny because they said we wouldn’t grind and that’s ALL I’m doing currently. Moreover, they continue to make farming more difficult thus giving me less incentive to play. What bothers me the most is they said that precursor’s were too far out of reach when they were at like 100 g now the really good ones are 500-700 g. How is a new player ever supposed to reach it? There’s no incentive other than praying it drops off a vet guard in wvw – happened to a guildie.
And I’m sorry grinding out CoF 500000 times for the gold is NOT fun. And your stated philosophy is the game should be fun not a chore.I have a new video uploading as we speak that covers a lot of this. It should be up in an hour.
Here we go:
Risk Vs. Reward is a big problem in GW2 and it’s the reason many belive GW2 has no endgame.
We have a guide here on tips on how to win at crab toss:
But just in case this is a tech issue have you abserved your ping while playing crab toss?
To check alt tab from GW2, press your Windows key and type in “resmon”
Next click the “Network Tab”
Now find the “TCP connection” drop down below and click it.
GW2.EXE should be there.
Look for the latency column and get GW2’s ping from that.
I’m from rural Australia and I play fine with a ping of 400. I’ve deliberatle put some strain on it and pushed it up to 700 and noticed the problems you have highlighted here.
Can you do this for us and let us know what your ping is so we can see if this is a problem on your side or Anets.
Oh! Also try running GW2 as administrator. I’ve found that can clear up all sorts of problems.
If this is a problem on your end (Ping is 500+) let us know and we’ll see if we can work out how to fix it for you. You’d be surprised how helpful people can be from time to time.
(edited by Kaaboose.3897)
I don’t hold still when attemping a swipe, I try to match their movement.
Are you sure you’re not confusing lag with skill activation time?
Also for thoese interested in seeing all these skills come together the background footage of my latest video is from crab toss with some tricky manovers pulled off quite well (and sometimes not so well!)
(edited by Kaaboose.3897)
IMO CoF P1 needs to become HARDER or it’s rewards nerfed rather then brining all dungeons up/down to its current level of RvR.
Making every dungeon reward the same amount of loot for the CoF path 1’s RvR ratio would do more harm then good.
The current state of RvR in GW2 is all over the place at the moment.
This video goes over WHY RvR needs to be improved as well as offering an elite dungeon similar to the underworld in GW1 as a solution.
There’s a follow up video coming up soon covering why I believe we haven’t recieved any ‘endgame’ content like this already.
As always I’d love to hear everybodies thoughts on the current state of RvR in GW2 as well as foreseeable problems with the proposed solution.
EDIT: I didn’t do a very good job with the sound levels in that video, There’s a re Upload with the sound fixed here:

How, HOW are people defending arenanet for leaving this glaring problem in their game for so long?
I love GW2 but this problem contunially bites me in the kitten and causes untold levels of frustrations.
Anet have demonstrated they can fix farm more complex problems then this.
Anyone defending Arenanet for leaving this problem in their game for so long wihtout any excuse as to why is an idiot, a fanboy or both.
If you could buy them and every man and his minion had one. Would they still be so desirable? I think not.
Yes they would be, particularly if they were a limited time item. Also if these things were not soulbound they’d be selling for a fortune on the TP, which I can honestly see some people buying gems to be able to afford.
This RNG Bullkitten is just corporate greed that consumers really need to not only avoid participating in, but actively tell the company that they won’t stand for it.
Another 3 win streak this morning. This is actually not bad farming (and fun to boot) if you get good at it!
A lot of people struggle with this game so I’ll share some of the things I did to consistently win 150 to 100 and get all the achievements. Once you start playing the right way, it’s actually a ton of fun.
0) Timing and position is everything; anticipate and don’t waste cooldowns
1) Do not chase your foe. You all run at the same speed. Cut them off or wait at the other side of the court. Search for environmental weapons (more on that in a second). Just don’t waste time endlessly chasing.
2) Hold down the run button longer to go farther. It is also an evade. You can run through rolling karka if you want.
3) Environmental weapons are OP; the fishing pole/conch to leash a person chasing the crab or leash the crab directly; stand back with egg when someone is about to pick up crab, drop egg on them, let them burn cooldowns, then go in for the steal. Plank has a leap and a whirl knockdown.
4) When you have the crab, immediately turn around and sprint to the opposite side of the court. When someone gets to you, throw the crab at them (knocking them down) then steal it right back.
5) To lead to conditions for “Crabtacular”, run the crab into a corner near the Charr Crab Master guy’s platform. This will bunch people up; it takes a little luck but you can do it.
I had a lot of fun playing this game. It’s a little frustrating at first if you don’t know what you’re doing but follow those simple tips and you will play like a beast. Have fun!
All great pointers. Just be warned that if you’re playing with a group that know how to play there will be people waiting on the other side of the court after a dash. Fake dashing, item theft, Rock stuns, and my personal favorite, throwing a crab at someone trying to move out of the way of a rolling karka!
I made a video guide to the basics and go over all the items as well here if anyone is interested:
I still find plenty of lag, to the point where it’s nearly unplayable for me. My pings are between 100 and 200 so, as usual with rural “broadband” (radio, so large jitter) I guess I’m screwed.
I sit on 460 being from rural Australia and I have no problems. I get the occasinal noticable spike (or did haven’t seen any recently) but nothing that makes the game unplayable.
Personally I didn’t find the learning curve for Crab Toss too steep but as you said different people adjust to different things at a differnt pace.
The community working together always helps but I cannot tell you how many people have raged at me saying “You’ve won 3 games already! GTFO of here so some of us can get the achivement!”
These people don’t want to be helped, or learn how to play the game. They want everything handed to them on a silver plater and personally it infuriates me.
It really does make me happy that some people took the time to give you some poitners on how to play the game and now you are enjoying it. Helping other players and seeing them enjoy the game is its own reward and its great to read about as well.
For thoese of you interested, I made a video on how to play crab toss the other day as well as going over each of the skills and how they work here:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/A-guide-on-How-to-Win-at-Crab-Toss/first#post2045231
Also while I really wish I could join with fellow guild members without having to time us entering at the same time I can see other players using this to abuse others.
Nice post BTW.
And I heard the chance for a weapon ticket is 1%. But it doesn’t matter either way, whether it’s 1 or 30 percent. There shouldn’t be keys/lockboxes involved in the first place. This guy explains why:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/On-Lottery-RNG-Boxes/first
One of the best posts I ever read on this forum since, well, it’s very creation.
Dude! Thanks for giving us the link to that post. That was a really well written and informative post and I enjoyed reading it.
This is an amazing post.
There is just ONE part of it I’m not 100% on.
The limited time offers. Now hear me out on this! I’m not exactly defending this practice, but I can see how it might benifit me, particularly in the way GW2 is structured.
Because there are limited time events and items (Living story, Lost shores, Molten pickaxe etc.) players who stop playing the game for whatever reason may feel compelled to return and check in on GW2 more often.
It is an underhanded practice, but it’s one of thoese “The end justifies the means” arguments.
An MMO needs a large active playerbase to function. Many go down the rotue of the subscription fee to help keep players invested in their MMO. Others use the neverending requirement to grind for more levels or better items to stay competative. Many do both.
If you, for example, left WoW during vanilia, and them came back in cataclysm you will have missed out on lots of “limted time content.” Sure you could go and play through Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King but the experiance would be nothing compared to what it had been like when that content was current.
Also it helps enforce Arenanets choice to allow us to transfer gold for gems. If a player does not have and cannot farm up the gold he needs for an item he will ahve to either go without the item or purchase gems with real world currancy. What’s that? He should have farmed up lots of gold in advance? That’s exactly what I wanted to hear! If he was to do that he’d have to play reguarly to keep his supply of gold in check, and the more people that do that = the more people playing the game.
I don’t have a perfect soltuion to trying to keep players activley interested and playing your product without resorting to these sort of ‘unherhanded’ measures but I do consider Arenanets aprach the lesser of two evils.
Other then that I agree with everything else and really enjoyed reading this post. Thanks for taking the time to write it.
(edited by Kaaboose.3897)
Just adding my own 2 cents here. Arenanet, I hate RNG I really do.
However if you MUST have it in your game PLEASE make the items unbound.
That way for thoese of us that hate RNG we still have a way to get them (Though you can bet your kitten it won’t be a cheap way to do so!)
TBH if these skins were avaible to buy straight up from the Gem store I’d have bought them, and I’d have bought some molten skins as well as flame and frost dyes as well.
I can’t be the only player who feels this way, does your research really show that making the gamble for these items mandatory is increasing your bottom line?
Lag is so much better now in crab toss. People are getting MUCH better at playing it too. Players lining themselves up for the inevitable sprinter to break free of the pack, more focus on items, and even people deliberatly faking others out with mid range and shorter sprints!
Took me four goes to win it yesterday, and all four games has VERY close scores. I really do hope this sticks around after the LS is done.
Your solution is to grief people?
Not griefing. Suppressing a dominant player is a standard tactic in a battle royal.
It is. However any dominating player is just going to snatch that fishing rod right out of your hands and use it to get the crab
Should add that with the latest update if a player dies while you hold the crab you score extra points
Get a fishing rod and some southsun punch. At the around the 35 seccond mark try and get the crab from leader (Sooner if you’re confident with your skills with the rod.) Dash away, dodge twice, drink the punch, dodge twice, Dash again.
By now the game should be over and you should be enjoying your achivement. Remeber you can hold down the dash key to dash further.Just FYI; that’s not how you get Crabtacular achievement.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/Crabtacular-Achievement/
Ah I see, my mistake.
I love the game. I don’t love the people who come in with “let me win for the daily” attitude. Why don’t you just try to win like everyone else? Like seven other people are supposed to just sit there and GIVE it to you?
That guy spent the next match targetting me the whole time for saying “Uh, no.” Darn, I only managed 3rd that time around. Was still fun. There’s something about watching the karka roll that’s very entertaining, winning and losing.
I HATE people who expect everything to be given to them with no effort. Nobody is forcing you to get the title/daily and there are plenty of other options avalible for your META achivements.
If you REALLY want that achivement then WORK for it!
6 hours of trying, no Crabtacular yet. I try harder!
Remeber you can hold down the dash key to dash further.
I love this game and would love to see it stick around afterwards. The people complaining about it just don’t know how to play it.
This mentality of GW2 players that everything should be given to them with no effort on their part needs to stop. Seriously Anet, do not cater anymore to these guys or before you know it your game will be nothing short of a fancy cow clicker.
If you want to get the achivement learn to play the friken game:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/A-guide-on-How-to-Win-at-Crab-Toss/first#post2045231
Learn from the best.Stalk the guy who have winning streak.Steal stuff from that guy, not just crabs!
I honestly cannot tell you how many fishing rods I have stolen since this mini-game was released.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/southsun/A-guide-on-How-to-Win-at-Crab-Toss/first#post2045231
It’s not hard, I’m overjoyed to see it as the daily again!
