In soldiers you won’t kill anyone in today’s game. But they will still kill you. Guards overall sustain is surprisingly low for their blocks and etc. you can’t just heal away like an engi or ele, you die if the fight goes on. So take marauders with a soldiers amulet and runes of durability or defender.
This was a surprise to me, too, after a 9 month hiatus. I’m not the best at pvp (getting better with practice), but playing a few matches for the first time in HoT was learning experience, to say the least. As of now, I’ve gone bunker, using sc/f and sw/she with meanders stats.
I can apply pressure with a teammate around doing the real damage, but I rarely kill. I can, however, hold off 3 enemies with heals, shields, and safe zones long enough for a few teammates to come kill them. More often than not, I get top heals, defense, and rarely, even top damage during a constant assaults on my node.
Since changing to this build I have lost 2 nodes in about 25 games, and that was against a poorly played zerg team; 5 people running as a single group to a single node throughout the entire match, lol. I lost mine, but while I held off 5 players for longer than they would have expected, they lost the node they just took.
I guess my point is just to build on yours. If you wanna be tanks, you need to go all out, and you need to understand the role you need to play in that spec. It is also good to understand that what works for me, might not work as well for you. If you wanna roll hammerbow, go for it, know it will be hard with a lack of defensive you would have as a bunker, but if you stick with it, the abilities will become second nature, and things other might not have thought useful may be more so in your hands.
Edit to change zero to zerg. Kitten auto correct lol.

A great alternative to berserker stats is to go marauder’s. It takes away a bit of your ferocity to give you health. The 4 stat gear also has a higher stat count, so the difference between full berserker and full marauder’s is about 5% less damage for a huge boost in health.
Seems logical, and if it’s true for most outfits/armors, it becomes so easy it’d probably actually provide MORE content than work; maybe, but there are other factors. At least, it’d be highly viable to see a new race each xpac or so…
The issue with a new race in a game such as this is the lore that would be added along with it, which includes a story line which would bring said race to fight alongside us….which would include a major city and other cities/villages.
Don’t we have bear people in game already? Easy enough to make them playable.
OMG, people are buying items people want, only to turn a profit? How dare they. This kind of thing would never happen in any other MMO with a player to player market, and certainly never in real life. It’s almost like people don’t care what others have to pay because said buyer didn’t have the foresight to see this kind of thing happens, like clockwork, every time an event like this comes up.
On a non sarcastic note, how is you wanting the items any different than anyone else wanting the same item? You want to use them for your own ends, we’ll guess what, so do the people “hoarding” them to sell for more. No difference at all. Maybe next year, you try being the one to buy up all needed mats and stop crying because things don’t happen just as you like.
HoT is worth it, if you were unsure if it is for you, or not. You get the new zones, and elite specs, on top of more story. Elite specs alone are enough to buy HoT, which was my biggest buying point.
As far as the core game is concerned, Westenev is on point. The great thing about this game is the replayability. You’ve done absolutely everything to be done in the game, make a new class, and start exploring again. PvP is a ‘never-the-same’ Avenue of play, and with all of the tweaks that have been done since HoT launched has made core and elite specs closer in viability, so the disadvantage of not having HoT is much smaller than it was at launch, barring dragon hunters lol.
One thing I would consider, if you haven’t already, is level up professions like weaponsmithing, or making armor for your main class(es). The ability to make your own gear will always be a good thing, as long as they don’t make changes to crafting, or gear drops.
A suggestion, make a gear set for marauder’s (or berserker if you don’t need the health), a set for condition damage, like viper’s or carrion, and a prismatic set (all stats, can’t remember the name). That will give you a great base for gearing for just about any spec you could think of. Legendary weapons are pretty great, too. Changeable stats on the fly, ftw.
Since a lack of coins on the TP seems to be the main focal point now, maybe the problem could be lessened if YOU sold all of your coins. I see people making the assumption that too many people are “hoarding”, but maybe it’s just the fact that tons of people are doing the same thing you are, just trying to buy something. I see a lot of hypocrisy in this thread. No one can save coins for their own interests, but you can.
I’ve never used a coin in the years I’ve played this game on and off, and if I decide to sell or spend them down the road, it’s not really anyone’s business but my own. What I got from the OP was you now have buyers remorse with no way of refunding anything, and you don’t have the gold to buy what you want, or pay the price you want.
You do not deserve these coins any more than anyone else that plays this game. You have multiple avenues of acquisition. YOU choose to avoid some, and that is fine, but don’t complain about limiting yourself. If you wanted to make real life money for something you wanted, would you spend frivolously during the process of saving, or would you, maybe, get a second job? This market may be in a game, but it is based on a real world market, and surprise surprise, it works like one, too (supply and demand). Even more surprisingly, some people understand and know how to work the market.
I went up against a team with 3 mesmer last night. Pretty sure they knew each other, too, they were all dressed almost exactly alike, and they were all female sylvari with similar looks. Granted, I’m still new to the pvp scene, but it gets confusing when there are 15 people that look the same swarming the node I’m guarding, lol.
I am a DH, but I chose guardian way before hot. Everything about the class (other than the abysmal health pool) is exactly what I go for in 99% of MMOs. Heavy armored, 2h swinging, melee/magic destroyer. DH was just a happy occurrence. I don’t care about being overly powerful, but I do wish GS/LB would make a comeback in meta.
The setup I use is pretty universal (for me) throughout most MMOs I play. QWERF for my 1-5, T is my heal, 1-4 for utilities and elite, MB3 (middle mouse button) for auto run, MB4 rolls, MB5 swaps weapons, ZXCB for
F1-F4 (I haven’t come across a class I play that needs F4, yet). I keep A and D for strafing and S for reverse. I kept V for interaction.
I use the same setup for most games, barring the ones with cameras that naturally follow mouse movement (tera for example).
if you team can win with you afk or disconnected for 2+ minutes, you don’t deserve any points because you were being carried anyway. I’m all for harsh punishments for afkers and DC’ers.
You are inferring he is bad because he was DCed? Maybe, if he was playing the entire time, they would have won faster. Perhaps the other team was just that bad. You can’t assume he was carried without knowing how well he plays. Don’t be a kitten.
I understand what everyone is saying. I think we all know, as guardians, we can maintain the speed uptime, but the fact that you have to give up a lot to get the speed many classes get normally.
I, unwittingly, posted a topic to change signet of mercy or signet of wrath passive (probably mercy) to have a 25% speed boost. I would be willing to give up my power signet or one of my traps for that. Retreat doesn’t feel worth it to me.
And immediately after posting this, I saw another post about the same thing, said in a bit cruder manner. I thought of this and posted immediately without looking and I am sorry for the overkill on the topic =P
This may have been mentioned in the past, but I would like to suggest a change to either signet of mercy or signet of wrath. Remove the passive effect of one of those, the least used would be the obvious choice, and replace it with a permanent movement speed passive.
I don’t know how OP that would be, but I feel so slow as a guardian in the mix of battle. I can’t see any reason to not consider this, but maybe the rest of the community has some input about the balance of this change I may have overlooked.
I want a real support. I want a class that only throws out boons, cures conditions, no real healing but increased rally. I think it would be fun to have a class that does no actual damage, but maintains the status quo of the group in terms of kill speed.
Is it the small amount of extra damage on the weapon (like to points more) and the constant symbol uptime why hammer does better? I also assume that is for fights that last a few minutes, but what about movement and changes? Just get better at predicting lol.
I keep seeing thing about a new expansion, maybe that could be a focal point instead of creating a new class. I was actually thinking the UI could use an update not long ago.
The biggest thing would be overhead names. I want larger health bars colored to aggression and more options to alter the bars. I don’t really need to see everyone’s guild and mastery level. Even no names with aggression health bars would be nice.
Finding some way to move the quest and party areas down to the bottom of the screen would be nice too.
Money is not the issue here, I just have no group experience. I can make another ascended set any time I want, I just haven’t been into the game as much as I have as of late. I made my first ascended set, but have already started on my second (viper).
It seems like my runes are going to be the biggest hurdle, which I can buy what is needed. I have actually wondered what to use anyway.
I’m not against using different weapons, but it seems like LB/GS isn’t the way to go in high end stuff, and that was one of the most exciting things about the expansion, guardian with a real form of range.
Any help with the matter is appreciated, and don’t worry about buying things, unless it’s an epic or some kitten lol.
Awesome thank you for the info. The stats fit my playstyle as far as power builds go, I just didn’t want to miss out on some of the game because I take a couple extra hits.
That is what my thought was on it. I may not be bringing the absolute maximum damage to the raid, but I don’t lose out on that much, and the low health of a guardian can be annoying to more than just me.
100 health has saved me many times, and I always have my f2 ready to get away and gain a bit of health, then kite for a few seconds waiting on the heal.
I guess my real question would be, are people that particular when it comes to raidin . I’ve played solo almost entirely since shortly after launch, and I have decided I want to see the raids.
Without reading too much, I would like to say I finished my entire ascended set (first one) in 2 days and am just about to finish the back.
I bought banyan of the mats and paid right around 1k. I would also like to note that I’ve been playing completely solo, breaking down anything that was not useful, selling the better priced items and storing the rest for years, so that could have a small bearing on early mats.
Does the extra health on a guardian be worthless in raids? I haven’t seen anything with raids at all, though I will be youtubing later. If the numbers are correct on that link (about 4 posts down) then the damage looks to balance out for the most part and add enough health to my tiny guardian health bar.
As the title says, I would like to know how kitten i would be taking the marauder stats. I found a reddit post showing the difference in the 2 sets, which seemed to me marauder would win out other than absolute maxing.
https://m.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3qvhwg/marauder_stats_for_all_armor_slots/
The extra safety net of the health seems smart for me; I’m not the greatest, so a little forgiveness is nice sometimes. You do lose out on a small chunk of power and some crit damage, but you actually gain crit chance.
Anyway, I was just wondering how negatively I’ll be viewed going the marauder route.
Thank you for the help and the links, I’ll check those out.
I have been to metabattle.com and have seen the builds to use for each aspect of the game. My question is what is my role in WvW, and separately my role in regular PvP?
Edit: With role I mean healer, ‘taunter’, holder etc.
I do fine in PvE, but I don’t quite get what I SHOULD be doing with everything else. Where do I even start in WvW
P.S. I realized this should have gone in the WvW or PvP forums after I started, so sorry.

We are the difference between detectives and street police. I don’t bother with things that don’t really quite monster larger than 10’ lol.
I would really like to see the black and white angel wings again. I had just missed them the last time they aware in the store and those are the best wings so far.
Also, any skins, not outfits, that randomly come through are very appreciated.
I honestly hope the game sta6s just as is for the most part. I love the ways to level, getting/crafting, the combat system and the world/story in general. The only things I would like to see done is an out of combat sprint system, updated graphics/UI, new trait lines with maybe a different class or 2, but most of all, camera movement/controls like ESO or Skyforge.
Avoid platformer of all kinds (I have mentioned under water several times) and move back to the core-type world with better AI on the enemies like in HoT. I could honestly go for mountains and caves if we need multiple levels.
I’m sure this thread has been made in one shape or another but I saw none on the first 3 pages, so I figured I would start a new one. I would love to hear your hopes with the next edition of GW2, and some of your fears.
I LOVE the HoT maps. I just haven’t ever been able to transform the 2D MMO maps into a three dimensional picture in my mind. These maps (provided you find a safe place to stop and check) make it much easier to tell if you need to run up one ramp, or if you can just glade down to a different level.
They needed to come up with a new format for the elevation levels for HoT. The old system (current system) was fine for the almost entirely 1 elevation maps.
We had a few spots where the layered map worked just fine, but with the HoT maps, it doesn’t give a very detailed description of where the ability to climb higher is, making the maps seem much more confusing.
I really thing showing “elevators”, places to safely move up and down, would have made the maps seem more friendly.
Unfortunately, I feel a water xpac coming on, so they may end up making under water weapons usable on land and all other weapons (with slight rework on both) will be usable while swimming.
I fear another platformer xpac, and the more I think about all the things that were added for hot, and all the things more than likely coming with the next xpac.
From my crafting menu, it looks like all I’m missing to all the pieces are the lesser vision crystals for 4 pieces (already already made the helm) and the one regular vision crystal, then I have my entire set.
Edit:I have bought all the armor recipes, these are strictly insignia recipes
I was really just confused by the difference in the two
(edited by Klowdy.3126)
I’m having trouble seeing the difference in the two, really. It seems as if the ascended insignia for 2100 karma gives you the option to choose what set of stats you want, which include the marauder set, but the Svaard insignia is much cheaper.
I guess my question is, do I need both for some reason. I have the karma, but I would prefer not to spend it at this time if unnecessary.
I would also like to add I’ve been a long time casual player (3 years or so if I remember correctly), I am just now starting to get into group play in general other than the random world events, so I’m a bit late to the gearing game.
I had enough saved up from the years to actually buy 2 epic weapons for my main spec, and my trinkets are pretty well filled out, I also have a good grasp of how my DH plays, it just seems a daunting task to get started with endgame preparation.
One last thing, a direction for runes, weapon and armor, would be helpful. Suggestions for open world “solo” pve and dungeons.
Thank you much in advance
I’m off topic a bit here, but the one thing I really fear is a water themed xpac. You thought midevil Mario was bad, wait until the water level.
As many others have said, rolling with the group is the best way to get around.
As someone has said, it was already lowered and much easier to reach. This progression for the elite spec is no different than filling out the rest of the spec trees, you have to go find all the points and fill it out slowly. The only difference is the fact you aren’t getting points from leveling up now.
It sounds like you wanted to make a hot only character when the game does not support that idea. Go out in the world and find like 2/3 of the points out there, then jump into Hot at about 50% completion and knock out another chunk with some solo points.
I have used “save yourselves” since starting my guardian a few years ago. You get about 70% uptime with that. The shield is also useful
There is a fourth spot for a color change. It would be nice to get the orange glow to change colors. It is by no mean a big deal, but the orange glow is a bit limiting with color scheme. just a quick thought.
It would be a generic letter, saved and sent out all the same. There would be no misspelled words if it was sent by a GM.
I bet it works, though. People read this crap and freak out, and immediately go to the site and give away all their info.
