Max Target Aoe, Zergs, and You

From an organised small group perspective we actually find the aoe cap of 5 gives us an advantage and makes wvw a better working model than in other games. By capping it at 5 you give yourself a quantifiable number to balance around a maximum damage for that skill. by not capping it you end up having several very powerful aoe abilities that rule the lakes (Warhammer online).

In terms of 60+ zergs running around firing off aoe, imagine the ammount of death they will bring without an aoe cap of 5 they would be able to instantly kill anyone with that much overlapping aoe. a 60 + zerg can obviously already bring this kind of fiery death but the zerg nature makes them uncoordinate to stack that aoe so you will often find the cap of 5 helping you more than you’d think with inferior numbers.

There are some very good guilds out there that beat 60+ with small groups of about 15-20 day in day out and they do it by adjusting to the design of wvw not playing what they want and wearing what gear they want.

distance between defence points and siege range i agree with the OP siege should be an open field solution that draws open field fights to its location not a sit behind the walls and spam 1 eventuality. this is a bigger problem in EB over the borderlands though where you get a bit more room.

culling is pants we’ve learnt to allow for it somewhat now, but yup also right its pants.

There is a ranger in my guild that is so freaking aweosme in wvw and he always changes specs and weapons he’s very versatile. I loved his beastmaster spec where his pet was critting people ridiculously high. I don’t know enough about rangers to recommend anything since mine is level 2 waiting to be played but seeing this guy in action has made me want to level one.

I would advise gunners hold to anyone wanting to move server, they have the best mentality wvw wise. not the smallest but if you are looking for well thought out strategies and people willing to participate in a fun experience thats probably a good lower pop server to move to.

This is quite an important issue we really need a dev response, mostly because the statement made about this was so undirected and without any detail, that its causing a lot of concern but also because no one who plays WvW see’s any issue with aoe in its current form, the only issues are from individuals classes looking at class balance.

I’ll say again aoe caps were very clever but whatever you do the hardcore wvw gamers will adjust and utilise the new system as well. what you have to do is make sure your systems don’t play into the hands of just gathering up massive numbers in one place.

Nerfing aoe damage whilst leaving thiefs able to burst down players in under a second…

Relatedly, they mentioned too much AOE on players trying to rez, um, yeah, how else are we supposed to stop a thief stealth rezzing or stomping your ally… by trying to tap on his head with a single target skill while he is invisible?

You have to put out enough AOE damage to drive them out of spot, or kill them, or this ability to stealth rez and stomp becomes far too great, they already have a huge advantage at this.

exactly AOE ON THE RES POOL! is the main chant in our TS. what the hell do they want us to do 20 against 60+ how is that going to work with single target damage.

When I heard about the 5 person AOE cap I thought BRILLIANT! Anet you genius’s by doing so you give yourself a fixed limit to work out the effectiveness between aoe and single target.

AOE at present is pretty well rounded. some classes have worse aoe than others and should be brought in line with those but in a manner that doesn’t mimic another classes playstyle (we don’t want mesmers becoming like staff ele’s blasting big rings of confusion based death everywhere)

I can’t see what the problem is how the balance should work. if you are fighting 1-2 people single target should be considered the best option (in most builds it probably is) if you fight 3 then you should make a judgement call between single target and aoe. If there are 4-5 then aoe should be the definite best choice in that scenario.

The rezzing issue does need to be looked at, it plays into the ahnds of these ridiculous sized 50-100 guilds. if your full downed you should either have to respawn or make res from perma down only available out of combat. 3rd option i just thought of make res interuptable on damage iwth a cool down. the latter two let you at least res 1 part member out in the field if he gets ganked whilst your guild is running from A-B.

Anet use your heads they are probably looking at the metric of weapon usage in wvw and just seeing aoe weapons, but when people run in large groups as wvw is intended to be about, then what did you expect. 1v1 still happens later in the evenings roaming and single target still has a place but don’t destroy aoe to compensate and play into the hands of the larger population.

WvW Top Guilds Thread

Specialty: GvG
Server: Piken Square (same server but they switched to fight the PS guilds recently)
Reason: Their initial first hit GvG is kitten hard! coordinated melee train/aoe stacking. good class synergy. I feel HoB can emulate a lot of what they do but their initial first wave attack deals a ton of damage. They’re more than willing to come out with equal numbers for some proper GvG too.

no one else EU I’ve fought compares, the only other guilds that have given us fights like RG are just throwing numbers at it not thought and skill or specialising in mass arrow cart production.

I welcome the transfers, lets lock down the communities and make people take a careful think about what they are building.

It might be news to some but those rankings and scores everday aren’t about winning, they are your score in server HR. They show that you crammed a ton of people onto a server, well done.

winning is about going out and fighting in the lakes man to man, and winning when you are outnumbered. those rankings are irrelevant and the free transfers just steal players from the lower WvW tiers which ends up forcing more of them to transfer so that they can at least have a few other gamers to enjoy wvw with on their servers.

there was no reason to transfer in the first place, it has always been the easy road. if everyone had just stayed put in the beginning the matchups would be a lot more fun.

And why u need a zerg to kil 3-4 people, cant u do it indivdually.and about fair fights those big guilds show up from behind in stealth and start attcking , yeah thats very constructive. This would be called sneaky not fair.

Nixel this is just one of those things that you see against all servers, every server has a PUG population and when they aren’t as organised they will seek to defend their objectives rather than make ambitious even fights in the open field. Piken have seen the same things from loads of servers and we can’t blame them for defending their objecives its just part of the game mechanic.

if you want those even open field fights (definitely something I enjoy more than standing behind siege) I’d definitely suggest coming into the borderland zones which attract smaller guilds looking for fights in the open and trying themselves against superior numbers. I do agree with the sentiment of the game not become treb wars though where everyone just sieges each other to death, its very dull and this is the reason i don’t fight in EB the objectives are too close together I always feel like I’m staring up at a wall waiting for the rams/treb to do its job.

WvW should be focused at increasing the ammount of time spent fighting other players.

if Arena net feel the need to include pve elements they need to be solely focused on creating more player vs player combat and not be a distraction away from it. The current pve is trivial.

If they want to add more pve, then make sure its out in the open away from fortifications to get people out from hiding behind 10 arrow carts they built in the afternoon whilst everyone else was at work and into the actual fields to fight man to man.

can’t speak for a whole server but HoB were fighting superior numbers in gandara borderlands for the majority of yesterday evening.

If you are in a wvw guild though I’d imagine that HoB VII, TUP RG PX or any of the other organised guilds would happily accept an even numbers challenge. I’d imagine this wouldn’t happen though because this post seems like sour grapes and not a serious attempt at stimulating good fair fights as it is totally non-constructive.

Still some good fights to be had as of last night.

I think there is quite a bit of misinformation on piken being zergy, the only instance where I see this happen is when we have a 2-3 guild descend on the same location, but the vast majority of piken are guild that run with 15-25 people and stay spread across the map. Frankly particularly from AR we see much larger groups than that running around.

I’m not that thrilled with the prospect of going up higher in the tiers this was a nice area to play in. the thing about Piken is that it has a core of guilds that like playing together, we don’t care if we’re on the up or dropping down. We like the banter and rolling out in the evenings to see if we can get some good fights. the rankings is almost irrelevant (obviously we want to do well no point in not trying).

Sers, nice matchup so far but please stop telling that both sides are focusing Piken, just look and your and Raniks Bordelands and you know what i mean.
Instead of that you can see focusing on River but hey its ok the second Place ist always on focus we felt like an sandwich last night^^.
We have non existing nightshift 10 people from you and Ranik and we lost almost everything. Yesterday the whole day i was up we out good pressure on Piken and where on points per in front………….almost come close to you.
Today i log in and from 6k it went to almost 20k………….

a few people have said we thought we were focused but its clear its fort ranik looking to be opportunistic. So when you have pushed us back the french will look for taking us whilst we’re under pressure. last night we pushed you back and the french used it to do the same. obviously we weren’t fussed because they are so far behind.

we don’t have night time players just a few very dedicated people that can live on 4 hours sleep when we need to counter your 8.am golem rushes ;-)

but In my personal opinion cramming loads of guild into our primetime isn’t going to really benefit anyone and there are loads of great upcoming servers that would love to have the guild posting and those involved with that guild.

If you do join another server hopefully your influence skill and numbers will help bring them up the rankings and we’ll fight you guys at some point because thats what WvW is about good equal oppositon not flooding the field with bodies.

u can see that topic starter asks us about our servers before transfer. I think it’s a good way. Not like “we are RUIN 2.0 and you must invite us to your server!!111” in another topics.

Yup I couldn’t agree more Jolly this was a great way to go about it , you guys typically play at slightly different times to me and reaping so its good to get a mixture of opinions from Piken so they can make the best decision. didn’t intend any disrespect for not agreeing with you earlier.

Population of Riverside and Piken are the same.
I think the difference in WvW population is your own fault for driving players away. As an ex- daytime-Piken player, it was very frustrating watching your anti-transfer attitude where you cared only about queues in your play time, while WvW beeing a 24 hours game, so some of thouse 7-11 gmt players would have joined in early hours as well.

So when i see an apportunity of fresh players for WvW slipping by because of the arrogance of some individuals, i can only send my best reguards to the Piken dayteam. You are worth more than Piken deserves.

And this pretty much summs up my view on situation on Piken.

I’m fairly confident that reapings original post and my original post addressed the issue of finding out when the guilds in question were looking to game. they need to find a good server where they will be the most useful and explaining that our primetime is typically fairly full if not ques everywhere which it normally is 5/7 nights a week that they might be better looking elsewhere.

I’m just one guy but I have a ton of respect for our late night early morning and mid afternoon gamers. They like their counterparts on multiple servers are the bread and butter of points being brought in and put up with crazy odd disparities and defend valiantly. PS discuss the best ways that prime time teams can support those playing at different hours. check my original post on here for the same feedback to if they were a guild who games at other hours.

All that I’ve done here is put an honest picture across to the original poster and for what he’s looking for a server like far shiver peaks or maybe gunnars hold if they have larger numbers is a much better suggestion.

as far as Piken goes we’ve done really well to get to this ranking and we’re playing against great opponents as far as I’m concerned we have good opposition 7 nights a week with close competitive WvW matches not a lot of servers can boast that.

lets not derail this guys thread into the current PS matchup we have threads for that on our own website and on the official forums.

Out of all the servers PS have played the best individuals I have come across were on Gunnars Hold! they simply didn’t have the numbers though due to loads of guilds leaving. If the OP can get numbers in the 100’s from a few guilds they could totally transform GH as I’m sure there is still a core of gamers there that are awaiting an influx of new WvW focused gamers.

I concur, take it away please nerf it into oblivion it will have no impact what so ever on competent thieves who have the imagination to look at sensible wvw builds.

if I see a heartseeker spamming thief I will quite happily stand on the spot and just aoe the hell out of the area as frankly if he hits hard he’s going down in 2-3 hits anyway.

If ur primetime playing hours are from 7:00 -11:00 gmt then piken isnt the place for u as we are full and have ques on this time slot sorry…

I concur with reaping if its 3 guilds coming with you for prime time weekly wvw I’d recommend another server. We have a nice balance at the moment with where we sit in WvW and prime time guilds aren’t going to impact Piken Square much if at all.

If it was just you guys it might work well but we have had so many bandwagoneers joining as we move up tiers and the effect on some areas have been noticeable.

if you are a day guild or have unsociable hours you’d find yourself in great company as our off peak guilds, commanders and just dedicated people are fantastically dedicated if a lot fewer in number than a lot of our opposition we are beginning to face.

if 3 guilds came over as a large alliance I’d imaging it would have a noticeable negative impact on the current population and even though this is a bit selfish it would be disappointing for a lot of guilds and gamers that have been on Piken from day 1.

I was on for a bit of last nights prime time fight but unfortunately with the new culling technique (by technique I think they mean disastrously stupid thing that should be pulled asap) it was sort of pointless.

anyways I’ve not been able to play as much as I liked but I really like playing against Riverside. Fort Ranik on the other hand have been a bit more vulture like, latching on to the scraps which fairplay is an ok tactic but they’re not that much fun to fight out in the open.

New Culling Trial (Ended)

The current trial is an absolute disaster.

This needs to immediately be rolled back as it renders the WvW experience completely farcical.

The effect seems to be worse in small groups as well having just had 15 people but only 5 visible to us, we were 5 but based on the damage completely visible to them.

The effect seems ridiculously random and for a small group trying to coordinate it ruins the game and turns it into a very “zergy” experience

On behalf of HoB… we kind of had our weekend WvW caught short due to the extreme lag issues around the event making our regular wvw night unplayable. its an unusual matchup due to the irregular play hours which I guess is due to french canadians. its the kind of tier where our Russian friends will be pulling a lot of the weight so good luck to them and the other day time hour gamers.. We’ll hopefully make up for our poor show sunday with some good smushing during the week.

Had a really good two weeks, I’ve met some fantastic individuals and groups from GH and AM. I quite enjoyed 50 + AM, portal bombing onto our 5 man group last night as the last thing I’ll be doing in this matchup. its been brilliant, varied and the best two weeks of WvW I’ve played since launch.

This was a sensible damage reduction. it effects my play style but it only balances its effectiveness. If you think this was unnecessary then you missed a trick. with dancing daggers as the exception. it was a very well rounded patch that didn’t compromise the classes play style

blinding powder cd reduciton is nice.

with the “impending doom” of balance adjustments, I’m always reminded that if people like to think they are good at playing their class, shouldn’t they want to rise to additional challenge of a balance adjustment.

I’m hoping to be able to experiment with more weapon sets and find them viable so here is to the pro’s of patches not the gloom that too many seem to see in everything.

Kyrus, (same as my private message) could you share your gear/build basics? I have very similar ideas on how a wvw thief should be played, but sitting at about 50% crit and baseline toughness (with only 25 points into vitality traits for survivability) plus the major kiting i do to anyone who tries to catch me of course. just replied to your private message actually should edit my previous one, my base crit is actually 56% (I think) its then buffed to 76ish % the crit damage is fixed at 84% though. the buff I’m including is fury as I run in a group and its basically up for at least 45 seconds at a time.

sorry if that was misleading but the base crit is still very high for the survivability.

Idea for turtling

Any counter you can come up with for a turtle can be equally countered by that turtle. Those of you saying it isn’t hard to beat a turtle haven’t encountered one that’s very coordinated. Used with the proper coordination of spells, a turtle can be unbeatable and it won’t be long before people start figuring it out.

The problem with this argument is that the well coordinated, geared turtle probably shouldn’t be beaten by a load of people just spread out in a field.

there is also a ton of misinformation in these threads about siege and what number it hits. siege hits 5 people, but the arrow cart siege for instance is essentially an area dot that hits at different intervals so it will hit either 5 people 3 times or 15 people 1 time each.

its pvp, people don’t have to play nice as long as they stay within the mechanics outlined by arena net and don’t artificially alter the game (hacking) then just deal with it or failing that drown your enemies with your tears…. your call

The kill-an-animal-and-revive mechanic?

I’ve begun adapting my tactics in so that I always engage player(s) with animals around me that I’ve wounded, should I go down, I simply finish off the animal and stand right back up. I managed to do this twice today and kill my enemy opponents, despite them downing me first.

I figure if its a working as intended feature, might as do as much as possible.

This is a good example of realizing how the game works and integrating it with how you fight, instead of trying to ignore mechanics and getting punished for it.

the w in wvw stands for world, mobs are a part of that.

you are given a hostile environment to fight in. if you are near npc’s make sure that you understand that there health is a factor. don’t just ignore part of the game because it makes the encounter easier everything is a factor. if its not a good place for a fight relocate.

I will actively look for mobs when downed. its part and parcel of the game. There are even times when its a good idea to not get someone into a downed state or to intentionally leave an enemy downed to take advantage of this ability. if you are running away on low health why not engage a mob with a quick burst knowing you can rally.

its not a level battle field out there and thats what makes it fun!

Well this post is basically completely inaccurate.

I currently run with 1995 power 17-18k health 1450 toughness 71% crit 84% crit damage. I have condition removal in my build.

I can stand in the middle of a supply camp and just aoe down the guards solo.

the thief is more than a backstab build. people need to look further than there nose.

So you’ve invested VERY heavily into vitality and have low toughness still. Congratulations. You’re seriously arguing our health pool is good? As for the guardian/ele comment, both those classes have invulnerability available, much more boon access, far easier stability, ele’s arguable with DD more maneuverability and far more hard CC on both classes.

We do have bad HP. And the whole way our class is designed as far as direct damage builds go, is for burst. Initiative in the long run will see you dead vs an equal skilled opponent.

As for the CC which you talk, I refer to hard CC. Knock backs, stuns etc. We have immbolise (one on the sword), 2 venoms on of which is an elite that is not as strong a CC as other classes have on a weapon skill, and a daze that can be considered good. The rest is mediocre. We really don’t have hard CC, and I believe us to be the only class that doesn’t have it.

I know my class, but honestly you cannot take away a large chunk of damage and not give something back. The way it is going is thieves will be pushed into condition builds like the necro, and then be of little help in dungeons etc due to bleed stack limits and such.

Anyone ever wonder why in top lvl tpvp people kinda… don’t use thieves? But use ele’s and engi’s etc.

I guess you are more coming at this from sPvP , I am coming from a purely wvw perspective

now there has to be a trade off. the fact is I have nice vitality I have some toughness not flat baseline toughness. the power is still good I can build up a nice crit rating and maintain a good crit damage. There is no getting away from our small health pool, but the sheer ammount of surviability we can get out of utilities and weapon skills is incomparable with other classes.

The thief is strong, it is difficult to kill, and it has more dimensions than mug cnd back stab heartseeker ….

what is wrong with it are the redundant areas. S/D P/P would be my first point, the next would be traps. These are priority one area’s for buffs and reworks. But with buffs some of our other areas need adjusting. certain elements of the backstab build need to be adjusted, not altered in less damage but adjusted to make the ability to stack various abilities into a very rapid 4 skill hit spread out over a longer period to allow reactive dodging.

My only point is, we have surviability a lot of it, you can do damage and gain survivability. it doesn’t have to be glass cannon or bust.

frankly the badges from pvp work much better as currency for siege than cash the pvp gear sets aren’t great for a lot of setups.

It seems, judging by your statement above and how well your server has done over the last two weeks (I’m on GH), that people server finds it much easier to gain badges than ours. Having said this, judging by messages in your forums, your server seems to have suddenly sprung to life just before the first matchup with us. We are completely outmanned and outgunned (due to your constant presence in the puzzles). Challenge, I like!

A few deaths won’t keep me from doing a jumping puzzle!

Basically PS has always had a very strong prime time, so between 6 and 11 GMT most evenings you are going to find a very strong coordinated presence. unfortunately GH have undergone some serious losses in numbers and amongst those a few large guilds.

before our matchup with GH PS actually lost 2 guilds but we started coordinating better and organising our weekends more. we have gained people during our second week of matchup due to use progressing.

what made the difference was just talking to one another and getting the whole server involved. whilst our new numbers now make life a lot easier its not what got us up there in the first place (that was prime time strength + coordinate and some excellent night/early morning commanders).

WvW Jumping Puzzles

Dear sir/madam

We are sorry to inform you that the jumping puzzles in WvW are active pvp zones that with completion reward pvp items. This is intended by design and will not be changing anytime soon. Might I recommend you bring some friends with you to aid in the jumping puzzle?

In addition, if you happen to be on a server with few WvW participants and therefore have a lower proportion of allies with you in the puzzle, that you should PvE more for money to buy the siege you require to participate in WvW.

That’s right, you should be in PvE if your server can’t compete. Working as intended. /sarc

if your server can’t compete you are probablty doing them a massive disservice by being in a jumping puzzle.

if you are having a bad time in WvW your server needs to collaborate and focus on holding maybe just 1 borderland get all your people into one place to start off with. if you focus on your home borderlands that gives you a jumping puzzle close to your spawn if you feel you need it.

mobility! I loved the idea of the sword in mh but it was a shame it was so lackluster, it is definately one of the strongest wvw classes at the moment so that was a bonus.

I welcome the enemy wasting supply building siege in the jumping puzzle.

I really don’t understand this its a pvp zone this jumping puzzle is designed to be held and pvp’d in. There are so many jumping puzzles in non pvp zones.

also why do people really need to do this jumping puzzle so badly. and since there are 4 different pvp jumping puzzles 1 in each zone why can’t people opt for a different one.

I’d not normaly say this but the jumping puzzle QQ is just whiny! if siege spoils your enjoyment get out of wvw or counter it. there are enough alternatives and the nice rewards from the wvw puzzle chests are part and parcel of enemy players making it more difficult to complete.

Gear Grind coming to WvW?

I’ll stick to the assumption I made at the beginning of the thread. This armor will only be useful in the specific dungeon it has been tailored to. With the exception of the infusion slot, Exotic vs Ascended will be mostly indistinguishable stat wise, offering literately 0 benefit 1v1 or 50v50. This new slot will offer Agony resistance, and nothing more.

If people honestly believe that getting this new gear could potentially increase stats to a point where a 1v1 fight could have a different outcome, then you’re simply kidding yourself. From what I can tell, the difference between Exotics and Ascended is smaller than Exotics and Rares, which is negligible. Anet would not be so ignorant as to drop a ball that big.

As of the 15th, only the ring and the back piece will be available. When they release the “next tier”, it’ll be another piece of the Ascended tier, but an earring, or a glove, or a chest piece, or some combination of pieces.

It’s a slow, negligible creep. Anet has always liked the PvP, and they will not screw it over.

Edit: The Ascended Armor will not have stats equivalent to Exotic Armor plus a gem. It’ll only have stats slightly, 2-5 points, better than Exotic base stats. The difference is that the Exotic will allow for a gem or a sigil, while the Ascended will only allow for Agony Resistance.

I imagine that Anet will have the Ascended Armor buffed a bit so it can be on par with Exotics though.

just on your edit, the ascended item is +2-5 points better across the stats in comparison to exotic with an orb already slotted. so it will be 2-5 ish points/% better but as you say allow for the pve infusion slot.

I’m honestly not fussed but lets get the numbers right before people get misled.

With ascended gear you gain roughly

in wvw you won’t gain a benefit from the infusion slot.

so you will gain more base stats per item and you will gain a slightly more powerful equivalent of an upgrade (if you split the stats how I have) but its not a huge difference.
