How strange would it be if they inverted shields to be a main hand, ranged (more offensive) weapon.
They reversed the Great Sword, why not shield?

arcane isnt viable for d/d because the condi clear you can get from cantrips plus regen helps to sustain, and you need evasive arcana because of the earth blast finisher for extra might, and the heals from water.

I’m very new to ele, but I’m curious about your rune, sigil and trinket choices. What if you were to drop the runes of strength, as you will likely be getting tons of might from people around you. perhaps replacing them with runes of water (which are much cheaper). This would provide tons of tankiness and allow you to keep fighting longer. Then, all the toughness from your trinkets becomes unnecessary, meaning you could swap them out for celestial or something like that. Now, you’re dealing slightly less damage with each attack, but you’re alive for much longer and you have access to decent condition damage. Finally, you could drop the sigil of accuracy and get something like a sigil of force or bloodlust.
Thoughts? Again, I’m new to ele, but I feel like these changes might have positive results.

Bifrost is on the way

in Elementalist

Posted by: LCV.7245

LCV.7245

So, I have a long and successful history playing Mesmer, but it’s time for a long term change. I’ve decided that Elementalist will be my next great endeavor. I also happen to be well on my way to crafting Bifrost, which is my personal favorite of all the legendary weapons.

I’m extremely excited for what is to come with Elementalist gameplay, but I’ve run into a dilemma. I love the celestial double dagger play style; getting up in peoples’ faces and brawling. Seriously, I love it. However, it seem that a play style similar to this is impossible with a staff. Everywhere I look, people want to make glass cannon staff Ele’s and it feels extremely generic. There must be some creative builds out there for me to experiment with. Anyone have any leads or input? Perhaps I’m just crazy and a tanky/brawling staff Ele isn’t possible. Like I said, I’m brand new here and I’m trying to get on my feet.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I’m an experienced PvP engineer player, having somewhere in the ballpark of 300 games as engi. However, my engi is still level 39 and I recently discovered that the flamethrower is REALLY COOL! I want to grind out max level then use the flamethrower for farming the Cursed Shore and other PvE stuff. I threw together a build just now and I want to see what everyone thinks. This build is intended strictly for flash farming mobs in the Cursed Shore events (and other similar stuff).

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fdQQFAUlcTpArVXxWLseRSdBNqoEqdCyAUARXjY0DA-TBiDABup+DUKDIUJIAXAAKeAAcp07DdA3t/AA-e

I have a question about how the flamethrow’s burn works. The flamethrower’s AA takes 2.25 seconds to complete and it says it applies 1 second of burning and applies power damage 10 times. I want to know if this means that 1 second of burning gets applied 10 times, or just once…

Thanks!

I haven’t read this and I’m not going to. You are a bad warrior.

I’m absolutely unaffected by the change. Get on my level. There are a handful of wars that predicted the gap between great and terrible warriors would widen. No one listened to us she we told you to stop relying on our broken mechanic.

Adrenaline works perfectly fine now. It was open before. It is 100% balanced. Get used to the adjustment or change classes.

Give up dude, anet will never give warrior any more complex play style or skill plays.

They will just buff passives again and nerf more damage when warrior become completely dead.

i already moved on to better classes with more fun stuff, after 2 years of trying and hope that warrior can have better gameplay some day.

This guys has a point. Anet compensates for Warr’s boring mechanics with strict numbers. Until this past update, Warr was grossly overpowered. Now that they’re closer to balanced, it seems like the Warrior forums have blown up with proposed mechanics changed to make them op again.
Look dude, Anet doesn’t listen to anything short of relentless criticism. In fact, it seems that they make decisions directly in contradiction with the opinions of their players. Just look at how terrible Mesmer became over the past 18 months.
Don’t waste our time crying on the forums unless you have actually good idea about mechanics changes. Promoting making skills strictly stronger leads to literally no intelligent conversation.

What would make a good new weapon?

There’s two melee weapons that I feel could really be used to embody the ideas behind Engi. Those two weapons are Hammer and MH Mace. I could see the Engi doing something like attaching rockets to his Hammer, allowing him to do something like a large leap (and other skills along that thought). In regards to the MH Mace, I could see the Engi using that with a very defensive focus, such as a bunker Engi for PvP.

Camping kits [suggestion]

in Engineer

Posted by: LCV.7245

LCV.7245

I’m just going to throw this out there… The whole intention and functionality of kits is that they have extremely low swap cooldowns and they’re versatile so that you don’t camp them. Choosing to forgo kit swapping is strictly a hindrance to the engi’s potential. In fact, kits are the sole reason engi’s don’t have weapon swaps. Not running kits (or no being willing to swap them) is like refusing to weapon swap on any other profession, which is ridiculous because no combination of weapons on any profession is ready for every situation.

Trust me, friend, the only good idea you have in this post is making Mortar an elite kit, which is anything but an original thought.

I dont think that was their original intent, it just happens thats the most effective use. Id agree with this if we were talkin 1 kit. its like your weapon swap basicly. But when you have 3 and just cycle cooldowns, I dont think this was what was intended. Just like im certain they didnt design ice bow to be a “Press 4, sometimes 5 then drop” item. But it is, cause thats how you best use it right now. They designed it to be a “Healing support weapon” which it isnt used for at all.

I don’t understand your argument at all. It’s inevitable that when a limited group of people (Anet) design something for the masses (the players) the larger group will find ways of using the tools at their disposal in creative ways. In regard to the engi having 3 kits at a time, I don’t see why you’re complaining. I’m positive that there are many players of many other classes that would happily give up utility skills for an equivalent of kits.

The bottom line is that engineers are powerful because of their innate utility and dynamic play style. This is primarily achieved through the use of kits because the activation of one skill gives the player access to several different options. In the case of grenades and bombs, all 5 skills are, in a major way, the same. Here, the diversity comes from the conditions applied. With bombs and grenades, the engi has instant access to a plethora of conditions. With the tool kit and the elixir gun, the skills themselves are divers and allow for innovative and non-linear interactions between players.

Kits are strong. If an engi is too lazy to use them, then perhaps warrior is a better option.

I’m just going to throw this out there (btw, I didn’t waste my time reading all these comments). Torment isn’t that bad for thieves to deal with. Mesmer Roaming Build?

PU is probably the best solo roaming build. It’s slow, calculate combat and engagements usually last quite a while. The only class I can’t regularly kill with a PU build is Necro, as they can easily consume your conditions. Other than that, everyone dies, even Shatter Mesmers.
PU builds area getting a seriously buff with the torment on scepter attacks. I’d wait until after the patch to buy up stuff for your build.

LCV.7245

Lol, mango clearly doesn’t play Mesmer very well, if at all :P

The bottom line is, torment is easier to fight than another condi application AA such as bleeding from Ranger short bow or bleeding/poison from Necro scepter (both of which have faster AA chains and faster projectiles than Mesmer chains). I mean, seriously compare this to Necro scepter. Necro have infinite projectile speed, the attacks themselves are faster, and there’s two separate conditions in the chain, which makes each of them harder to clear. Additionally, this chain reduces your healing by 33%. And as a cherry on top, Necro has so much condi burst that you can easily bury the bleeding and poison under have a dozen other conditions.

Oh, mango, in case you couldn’t find the Necro forums, I linked them for you. And if you’re going to continue being innept on the forums, you should probably move over to the Warrior forums, where you can’t find a single intelligent idea. I feel like you might fit in there.

Blink and Phase Retreat mechanics

in Mesmer

Posted by: LCV.7245

LCV.7245

Blink basically will teleport you anywhere if you can walk there without jumping. In sPvP where the maps are very carefully made you can blink huge distances in certain places, but on most other maps there are the smallest of bumps can hinder you from blinking huge distances.

Phase retreat is a bit different since it will always prefer lower ground over higher ground, so even if you could blink up a ramp you wont be able to phase retreat there if there is any space underneath it. It can be abused (with luck mostly) in other ways though like teleporting from the tunnel under clocktower to a ramp on the other side of the building, which you could never do with blink since you can’t actually see or target that area.

I think there may be something wrong here. On Legacy of Foefire, there are two bridges near the Graveyard point. It’s possible to use Phase Retreat from the low ground and get up to either bridge. This doesn’t work with Blink, as far as I know. This makes be believe that Phase Retreat doesn’t always prefer the lower ground.

Watch the video I linked. I can’t explain the specifics of Phase Retreat. It’s completely consistent from what I have experimented with (Phase Retreating from certain spots always leads to the same results), but I can’t seem to be able to figure out the rules to determine what the ability will actually do.

Blink and Phase Retreat mechanics

in Mesmer

Posted by: LCV.7245

LCV.7245

Generally, I cannot cross gaps or ascend/decline ledges using Blink or Phase Retreat. I find that I simply blink to the the very edge of the current surface I’m on. Other times, I spontaneously pull off blinks that my experience would say aren’t possible. The most notable examples are how a Mesmer can blink all over the sPvP map, Legacy of Foefire, dramatically exploiting the map’s verticallity and underused spaces. One extremely notable case of this is the video that Lord Helseth recently put up, where he is playing ranked PvP on this map. I will link the video below.

These blink spots break everything I have learned about how a Mesmer’s blink mechanics work. Can someone please explain to me the more advanced mechanics behind Blink and Phase Retreat, or at least point me to a location where I can learn about them. I want to not only do what Lord Helseth is doing, but I want to learn to discover these tactics on my own… I want to know my Mesmer’s real capabilities.

Thank you!

When I’m fighting in wvw zergs or when I’m in a particularly hectic boss fight, it can be very difficult for me to keep track of my Illusionary Leap illusion so that I can accurately use Swap. I find that, quite often, I use the swap too late and I miss my immobilize or my illusion goes somewhere I didn’t intend and I swap to somewhere I shouldn’t be. Any tips?

So what happened to Mimic?

in Mesmer

I have an interesting idea: what if mimic was changed to copy the last skill your target used, allowing you to use it one time for free. I would expect it to have an extremely long cool down, but it would provide strong incentive to have excellent combat awareness and combat knowledge. It would appeal to the experienced, level headed Mesmer.

Something like this reminds me of a thief’s steal ability, which is the most interesting thing in their kit (in my opinion). I understand that this is potentially fight defining in wvw and might need to be adjusted for fighting dungeon/world bosses.

I believe this is a good potential redesign of the Mimic skill because it plays to one of the Mesmer’s key strengths: utility.

Thoughts?

Warrior renovation imminent

in Warrior

LCV.7245

I haven’t played Warrior in months, primarily because I went for a pure tanky build. In dungeons, I can absorb every instance of damage without even batting an eye. However, I’ve grown board of this gameplay and am looking for something fresh.

I’m looking for a build that will allow me to dish out massive amounts of direct damage in a short window of time. I have provided a link to a proposed build, but it uses Berserker items, which I know are about to go through a nerf. I don’t want to buy all these items and take the time to understand the build just to have it go obsolete over night. Does anyone have an information on how severe this nerf will be or if berserker gear will even be viable after the changes?

So I’m turning to you guys; what are your thoughts on this build, specifically the equipment. What changes would you suggest and what info might help me embrace this character?

Also, it’s important to point out that I didn’t play Warrior for very long, ankitten o master at the profession. Additionally, I see myself primarily focusing on PvE with this guide. I have no interest in taking this to the WvW scene.

On one final note, I don’t know what weapons are useful when. That is, at what point should I be switching my warhorn out for an axe or a sword, etc. Any input is much appreciated.

Need input on WvW DD gear

in Elementalist

LCV.7245

I’m a skilled Mesmer player looking to expand my game expertise into the realms of elementalists. The idea that they’re “under powered” aside, I would like some input into a DD WvW build I am going to start experimenting with. More specifically, I would like input on armor type and runes.

I want to make an ele that does predictable and consistent, direct damage while excelling in solo and group survivability. I am considering going with a full Soldier (+Power, +Toughness, +Vitality) set of armor. I want to avoid crit damage because it’s less predictable than just power; I believe that an forgoing precision in exchange for defensive stats may be useful. One of my concerns here is that, without crit, I just won’t be doing enough damage.

I intend for this to be both a roaming and a zerging build. Any thoughts? I’m completely new to the ele meta game and this idea could be completely terrible.

I also want to know what you guys might suggest in terms of runes.

cantrip question

in Elementalist

Posted by: LCV.7245

LCV.7245

I’m a mesmer player who has been getting into wvw ele recently and here’s my take on the whole thing:

Elementalists have access to 20 weapons skills at a time, all of which are extraordinarily diverse and generally on respectably low cool downs (before any traits). Because of this, they can generally fulfill most build requirements with just weapon choices without compromising on situational needs. That is, what would generally take other classes both weapon and utility skills can generally be done with just ele’s weapon skills. This means the utility skills can’t follow suit as the other classes do, sparing engineer.
It’s important to note that ele’s have insane access to boon through their utility skills and attunements but choosing a few traits. Because of this, the utility skills become less of the standard “utility” skill and more of a source of specific boons, like gaining might when using a cantrip. This means the the individual skills, by necessity, are less “powerful”.
Consider the other option, where the cooldowns on all cantrips were reduced and their numbers all enhanced. In this case, no one would play anything but ele, the meta game would likely degrade.

As an example, I’d like to compare the mesmer’s blink with the ele’s blink cantrip. For the mesmer, blink is usually a necessary skill, as battlefield movement is essential to success. It’s on a similar cooldown to that of the ele, but it has a significantly longer range. Naturally, one would assume this means that the mesmer has more in-combat mobility than an elementalist. Unfortunately, this is incorrect. In addition to this blink, ele’s have access to a plethora of swiftness spells and a variety of “dashes”, if you will.

So, back to the question at hand, why are ele utility skills so “bad”. My short answer is, because it’s necessary. Buffing these skills in any significant way would do more than just give the ele a small advantage, it would elevate them beyond any other profession. In my opinion, it would completely destroy any meta.

My suggestion with the ele utility skills would be to view them as boon sources or “get out of jail free” cards, like mist for and earth armor. If you find yourself outnumbered, just become vapor and swiftness or dash away. If you see a loner you want to gank, then drop all your cantrips and surprise him with your stacks of might.

I’m curious to see how this conversation develops. I believe that everyone in here who says that ele utilities are “underpowered” or “useless” has a clear misunderstanding of the purpose.

I find that having blink in my kitten nal is essential. PvP and WvW mesmers benefit from exploitation of the human factor. That is, confusing the real person controlling the character you’re fighting. blink is excellent for this, especially if you learn to time it with other abilities.

I’ve been looking for an android gw2 build app for the past several months. I have met no success, and now it is time for me to turn to the community. I’m extremely tired of using websites on my smart phone. I’m hoping for an app or a new website that is Android friendly.

Thank you for any help.

All I do is stomp

I’ve noticed recently, especially on Asura characters, that player footsteps are extremely loud. Turning them down is easy enough, but this also turns down all other casting audio. I think the spell audio is extremely impressive and enjoy listening to then. I wish there was some way to run with a lighter step without muting my spells.

I think having a more complex audio settings system could really benefit some players, especially those who use headsets.

Looking for input on new dungeon character

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: LCV.7245

LCV.7245

I’m looking to fill my sixth character slot with a character completely dedicated to dungeoneering, especially with the new LFG system that’s coming out. I have much experience with most of the dungeons, but I don’t have a character that is dedicated to just that cause.

I’m debating between creating an Elementalist or a Necromancer.

I have done many dungeons with an Elementalist at my side and I tend to like what I see. When a unique role needs to be filled, they tend to succeed in filling it. That being said, I’ve only every seen a few Necro’s in dungeons and they seem to be awesome. I admire their ability to deal damage without sacrificing survivability.

What I’m looking for:
-Relative sustainability
-Flexibility in potential fighting styles
-Preferably low cool downs
-Relative independence (for when my entire party is dead)

What I’m not looking for:
-Purely supportive abilities
-Being too squishy to survive alone
-Obvious and repetitive skill progression
-Inability to down a large foe without help

Bonus qualities:
-Combos for days
-Ability to enter WvW without having to completely change gear
-Mobility

Please give me some input. I’ve never delved into the complexity of either of these professions and am very excited to do so. Also, if you have any resources or videos about dungeon builds that you particularly enjoyed, please feel free to leave a link. Thanks for the feed back!

Legendary Bifrost

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: LCV.7245

LCV.7245

I’ve been farming up for Bifrost as well and I know the pain you feel. I, however, do not think that Anet should make the legendary process any easier, as many other players do. These weapons are legendary. How does it make any sense to make their acquisition process easy? Only a legendary player should be allowed to wield a legendary weapon.

I think nobody said that the process should be easier or is going to be easier. The plans for the precursor are not to make it easier, but to make it require no luck. Luck has nothing to do with how good a player you are.

I agree that luck has nothing to do with your skill level as a player. That being said, making the legendary process completely predictable and arbitrary is not what Anet is striving for. It is clear that GW2 is a game developed to build personal story and encourage a strong community (everything from combo’s to WvW).

Making the legendary process completely predictable and well established completely eradicates the potential of individuality. There are players out there who get to boast about getting their 77 clovers on their first 77 tries. Those players are very few and far between, but they exist. At the same time, there are those that needed 400 tries. It’s an individual experience.

I guess what I am getting at is, there are different ways for a player to amass what they need for their legendary, whether it be farming it directly from creeps, farming heavy loot bags, or just using the TP. Use of the mystic forge is another element of the legendary process that is necessary because it enforces a factor of individuality (that the player does not have control over). Attaining a precursor is arguably the hardest part of the legendary process, as luck generally involved, though the item could just as easily be purchased. Implying that Anet may someday change this is to imply that Anet will betray the very fundamentals that they used to develop all of GW2.

Just as a side note, the only parts of the legendary process that can’t be directly farmed are the Gift of Battle and Mystic Clovers. What I mean is, every other required material for a legendary can be farmed in definite ways or purchased through gold, karma, skill points, etc. The Gift of Battle is the only Gift that introduces a more human factor because it requires participation in WvW (unless you just use the achievement chests). Basically, you can easily open up the trading post and see how much your precursor costs. If you’re looking for a process that doesn’t require any luck whatsoever, then go farm up that much gold and buy it.

Understanding Magic Find

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: LCV.7245

LCV.7245

It’s become clear to me that, despite having several characters with nearly maxed out gear and becoming very experienced in dungoneering and WvW, I have no idea how magic find works.

I’m looking for someone who can completely explain it to me, as simple or complex as it may be.

It’s been described to me as a modifier of the percentage chance of a creature to drops rare loot. For example, if a specific mob has a 3% chance of dropping one specific exotic sword and I have 200% magic find, does that mean that that mob now has a 9% chance for me?

Also, how does magic find affect the loot you get from champion bags?

Thanks for the help!

I'm considering a second mesmer

I have a Mesmer that I have almost maxed out. She has turned out to be excellent for dungeoneering and general PvE stuff. The massive condition damage and agile gameplay keep my intrigued and involved. My only dilemma is that she’s nearly worthless in WvW, so I’m considering making a second Mesmer.

I’m planning on having him use a scepter/sword or sword/torch with staff as second weapon. I will develop this character solely for WvW rights. I want to focus more on the small roaming battles and less on the zerg gameplay.

To those of you who have met Mesmer success in WvW, what are your thoughts on the profession. Is it worth my time to take up a second character slot with the same profession?
