[TWG] – Gunnar’s Hold
Always remember Wheaton’s Law
‘Stable matchups would be so boring. What people really want is fights where they have either no chance of winning, or no chance of losing. That will make it interesting! I mean, who doesn’t like playing games where it doesn’t matter if you actually play or if you just run around in circles yelling kitten and rubbing cake in your face??’
Just adding in my voice – done a bunch of meta events today again and salvaged at least a dozen rares, getting only 2 ectos in total (one from each of two.) This was all using master kits as well. Now it could be explainable by a run of bad luck, but this feels awfully low to me compared even to earlier this week.
For reference. Discussion continues on the next few pages.

Kind of wish we could get WvW matchups that were competitive without being outright hateful the way this one always seems to turn out, but I guess it’s too late for that now. Humans don’t give up grudges that easily.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:
Guild Dolyak Rollerskates Upgrade.
Perhaps a more pertinent question is why do you care?
I’m not trying to be rude, but…what possible difference could it make where people choose to spend their WvW time, unless for some reason you are wanting all the WvW-oriented people to end up in the same server/tier?
You like playing in T1, bully for you. Person B likes their spot in T4, they’re happy too. Person C is in T8 and glad to be there for their own reasons, no problemo.
WvW isn’t like an arena tournament in that it’s not all about opposing equals. There are so many factors in play that affect winning and losing matchups and these can improve or detract from the experience according to preference. Moreover, there isn’t the same type of personal reward for winning a matchup, in the sense of receiving individual or even guild acclaim, coin, items, ranking, etc. It really is more about whether you’re having fun doing it than anything else, and that is always going to be a ‘horses for courses’ thing.
With the May 14th update, the EB Jumping Puzzle will be its “own” map meaning those that enter there, wont count towards the population cap in EB.
I suggest, you move your duels over there to avoid regular wvwlers being stuck in a queue because of your fight club.

Not a bad idea. I have also fallen victim to making an incorrect judgement call that someone was in trouble, only to be killed while my realm-mate stood watching and did or said nothing until I was downed (hint: telling me only ‘run’ at that point was not especially useful.)
It would be nice if Anet implemented some kind of official duelling system, as there is clearly a demand for it. Plus, if it was available in the main open world, the duellists could have at it no matter which servers they were currently facing, via guesting (and could communicate while doing so.)
I think the problem in a nutshell is that there are effectively 4 T7 servers at the moment: RoS, Dzago, RoF, and GH. All four are stronger than WSR/Arborstone, either by a bit or by a lot, depending on how many random/casual players are around in a given week. Now, RoS have shown that they are considerably stronger than the other 3 servers, so one of Dzago, RoF or GH will keep getting bumped down and up depending on how things go. As is pretty clear from even this thread, there is some bad blood between RoS and GH, and there was a deliberate attempt by some of their guilds, at least, to make sure GH were the server bumped down to T8.
Until something changes to either move RoS up to T6, or something else changes within the makeup of T6-T9, both T7 and T8 look to be stuck with fairly kitteny unbalanced matchups. Speaking for myself, I find it annoying and disappointing, and it sucks no matter whether we are being stomped or doing the stomping.
Agreed, this change is really rubbish for PvE. I used to run with Search and Rescue for dungeons but now it feels like a waste of a slot since the window of opportunity to use it is so, so small.
Given the very small amount of WXP it gives, and the generally tedious nature of repeatedly repairing a wall alone (I know; I’ve done it!), I don’t see it as being a big problem. The best way to repair damage is to get a group of people to run supplies from a camp, and if they get a bit of WXP for it, all the better. I can’t see a lot of people genuinely spending hour upon hour in WvW just to fix walls solely for WXP, it’d take…well, 5 WXP per 10 supply worth of repair means 1000 trips to repair a wall for one measly level?
My ranger is dawn cycle. Pre-launch I was dithering, as I am wont to do, between dawn and dusk. Getting linked to ‘Fear Not This Night’ clinched it for me to go dawn.
There is a heavy leg piece which matches the guild chestpiece which is in PvP lockers but which I have never been able to find in PvE. It’s very similar to the banded set but the shape of the cloth area (the bottom of the guild tabard, effectively) is different and the whole ‘skirt’ part sits differently on my Norn, at least in the preview window – it’s more centred on her torso, and flares out less.
Hmm interesting…but a guildie gave me a pink quaggan backpack he got in a Black Lion chest and I would be loath to transmute over her! <3 Coo!

Some of the doors are really glitchy – the northwest tower in borderlands is particularly bad. I have seen players get through and I’m not convinced they were cheating, it’s just that the door is weird. I’ve also had more than one occasion where (for me) the gate is simply invisible – it’s been our tower each time and I wasn’t able to actually run through (had to use the little box) but it was very odd looking. Hopefully they will fix some of these things in a future patch.
I saw one called ‘All Glory to the Hypno[TOAD]’ which made me laugh.
Rangers are cool, k?
SOE guild rule no. 2: All rangers must die.

And a )o:3 from my bear as well… (see, with the little ears? …nevermind.)
I would think the biggest issue with GW2 in China would be the fact that the primary endgame enemy is the Risen which are corpses, and shown as such. As I understand it there are some fairly strict cultural mores regarding the depiction of the dead and bones in China – the launch of Wrath of the Lich King was very delayed in China due to the number of cosmetic changes needed to the zones, the Forsaken and death knights to make them acceptable to the Chinese authorities. I believe it has to do with the tradition of ancestor veneration in China (or so it was reported.)
Given all that I am not sure how well Zhaitan and his minions would go down in China, particularly since there are a number of story quests which involve allies dying and and then being ‘resurrected’ in grisly Risen form. If it’s mainly bones that are the issue I suppose there is more zombified flesh than actual bones but it may still require some overhaul. As far as armour goes, there are already some more modest armours in the game so I wouldn’t think it would be so difficult to just weed out some of the skimpier ones, if nudity/revealing clothing is an issue.
I will be honest…if I think someone is corpse-spying I will sometimes try to park my bear’s big fuzzy behind over their head. It probably doesn’t block their view much but it makes me feel better and shows I’ve noticed they’re doing it. :P
I do believe in sportsmanship (I am a big carebear at heart) but I also believe in thwarting spies!
I spent…I don’t know how long running supply from the northeast camp to repair a wall at Hills once…it was below 50% when I started and 100% when I finished. Unfortunately by the time I was done I had died of boredom, so in my head I now think of it as the Laurelinde Memorial Wall.
I may be slightly mad, however.
The original base game cost, and £8.95 for one lot of gems (ran out of level 80 gear transmuter thingies.) Most of the stuff in the gem store has been…not overly appealing (although the new mining pick is tempting simply for convenience’s sake.)
I think it would help a lot if the chat allowed for better communication between guilds. I was quite excited when I first heard about the multi-guild idea since I thought it would allow me to communicate and socialise with different groups of players who may want separate guilds (in my case, people from my old WoW guild and people from my LOTRO kinship.) I was disappointed to learn that representing one guild effectively shuts you out from any others until you rep them again.
As it turned out one of the guilds never really got off the ground so I rep the other one all the time now. But for me at least, it would be useful if there were a means to follow chat for more than one guild at once so that we could join up with other guilds for bounties and I could join in the server-wide WvW guild without losing out on the social aspect with my primary guild, for example.
Wow, they are really keen to have everyone be in big guilds, aren’t they? Seems like someone may have inadvertently erased the second ‘Y’ from the ‘Play Your Way’ motto.
But I mean, sure, I guess eliminating all the players who aren’t falling all over themselves about guild missions is a good way to solve the problems, too. All hail our glorious, dissent-free paradise!
Maltegreif,
LOL we had someone do the same thing ourselves in EB last week, there must be some weird new flu virus that induces a strange Ram building sickness in GW2 players
Perhaps it’s an outbreak of hoof and mouth? Rams…hoof…
…I’ll get my coat.
By the way, in an effort to help the community, my guild has turned off all of our titles on all of our characters. (We will no longer be showing our “achievements”.)
-something to consider
I’ve done the same. I have a LOT of titles to show too, but this is just too gauche.
I have given you a +1 one for use the of the word ‘gauche’. Well played sir or madam!
PS I also find the titles a bit jarring and do not much care if anyone knows I’ve explored the whole map or not.

As a dual US/UK citizen I have either two, or no opinions on this.

Doesn’t ANET check before they ban someone? This is really bad if true, I hope she can get her account back.
Unfortunately, they probably don’t have to. From their POV it is cheaper and easier to just ban anyone who may fall into a grey area than to spend the time sorting through each case individually. If worst comes to worst, the banned player may well end up buying another account if they are still keen to play, so that’s more money for them.
I know this was the philosophy at Blizzard at least, and they even had subscription fees to consider (although they also had larger numbers in terms of scale to balance out.) I would imagine it is the same way here, particularly since there are no dedicated community managers or in-game support. As long as there is more wheat than chaff at the end of it the shareholders will not mind overmuch if some of the wheat gets burned as well.
That said, I hope the person in question is able to resolve the situation. Best of luck!
I think for me the worst thing is feeling like I/we can’t even get to the challenge. If we find the bounty and can’t work out the tactics or don’t perform well enough and fail, that is one thing. When failure so often hinges on the fact you didn’t get a chance to try, either because someone else has tagged or killed the target or the target can’t be found in the time limit, it’s intensely frustrating and disappointing. I at least am not expecting or desiring to have a win every single time, but I don’t want to spend the whole season on the bench, either (if I may use a sports metaphor here.)
Changes to the time limits and the bounty spawns would help with this, or some kind of instancing system to prevent multiple guilds going for the same target and one or more losing out. Alternatively, a method of organising guilds to cooperate on targets rather than it being a mad dash to tag/kill as fast as possible.
I hope the devs are able to take on some of the constructive criticism and feedback that people are providing, rather than sticking their fingers in their ears and saying “LA LA LA it’s fine, just play better” to anyone who isn’t gushing praise. The responses thus far have not given me much hope, however.
Spending 15 frantic minutes running all over a zone trying to find one stupid mob who never shows, or died before you got there, is the opposite of fun. Playing Where’s Waldo in a constantly changing landscape with mobs attacking you which you do not have time to fight off is the opposite of fun. You can be as coordinated and organised as you like – we have split our team up between the relevant zones and then searched in quadrants from there, starting with known/previous spawns and moving on, all whilst communicating on Mumble – and end up with nothing. I am in a small guild (about 5-7 active players) and I will not be bothering with guild missions anymore.
For very large guilds who are actually able to encounter and engage the guild missions content, I’m sure it is just super-duper. For the rest of us, Anthony, I’m afraid it’s just a fail.
Saw a norn over the weekend named Angry Beardface which made me laugh and laugh. TBH it’s a terrible name because it’s so stupid, but it’s still funny. And it makes me want to think, ’It’s pronounced Angry Beard-fa-say!’
I do think this is disappointing, and I say this as someone who plays WvW almost exclusively on one character. (I have two level 80 toons but I prefer the ranger to the warrior.) From what I’ve seen, a lot of the skills or upgrades that will be included are pretty universal things anyway – how different is using a mortar on a thief to using a mortar on a necro? Defending a tower or escorting a yak is defending a tower or escorting a yak, no matter how you do it. So it seems odd that that experience won’t transfer over between characters as far as the skills, titles and unlocks are concerned.
There are several commanders on our server who have, or are working towards, the commander badge on multiple alts. Even if they haven’t got the badge on a particular toon, I feel comfortable following them anyway, because I know they know what they’re doing. If people have established their abilities in WvW, why should their alts be weaker instead of benefitting from that experience?
Agreed, dedicated space or at least a larger stack size would be very useful. I’m saving HoW tokens for some armour pieces at the moment but when the chestpiece requires 330 tokens and the maximum stack size is 250, that’s over one slot just to hold the tokens for one bit of armour. Factor in any other dungeons you might do in the period as well, and bank space fills up fast.
That said, I’m not especially hopeful since I suspect part of the reason there are so many currencies and tokens is to ‘encourage’ people to buy extra bag and bank slots with gems.
Only if you really like the skin. Otherwise, exotics work equally well, and some of them have quite nice models, if less flashy.
I use female face 3. I kinda wanted 2 but the eyes have a tendency to go cross-eyed or point in odd directions, especially if you alter the pupil size at all. :/ If that bug ever gets fixed I may do a face change, although I’m pretty used to my liney-face now.
I like the idea of Ventari’s tablets but I’ll also like to be able to choose the path I wander instead of being forced fed someone else’s ideas. Sure, the nightmare court may commit “evil” acts but their ultimate goal seams to to be free. I also like to do as I wish but not commit to some “evil” cult so I made my sylvari (in my own little fantasy version of tyria) a soundless one.
Also she’s a cannibal. : )
What? No one thought sylvari sap actually may taste good?
Yipes! (Also, I have gone for a technicolour look so I think mine probably tastes like pixy stix. Also, stay away! :O )
Not really…some of their ideology seems ok, in terms of…not embracing the darkness, but acknowledging it more? Jedi-style rules tend to end in disaster. But, based on what is shown in personal storylines and Twilight Arbor, they don’t really seem to be about freedom as much as they claim – more brainwashing, cruelty and destruction. Torturing fern hounds to corrupt them into becoming nightmare hounds, for example, is just evil. So I can’t get behind that.
The Soundless are much more interesting as an alternative, for me.
Novelty I guess, you don’t often get to play as a sentient plant in games! It makes a nice change from the usual elves/dwarves/humans in fantasy games. Plus, I love ents and plants generally, and the concept art looked interesting.
My main is a ranger, and while I sympathise with the little twitch that says ’you’re missing something!’ when I look at the pet panel, I think it’s fine that there are pet skins that are HoM only. If they had some kinds of special abilities that gave them an edge it’d be one thing, but as it’s just a cosmetic difference I don’t really see the issue. I always run with my bear Cookie anyway. ^^
FWIW I have an 80 ranger and an 80 warrior and in most cases the ranger does feel much easier to play. She’s much more likely to survive simply because she does have that headstart on mobs for kiting and getting out of the path of projectiles, and the pet soaks up some of the damage and effects that would otherwise hit her. In dungeons the pets often do go down quickly to the nasty boss melee effects, but the ranger herself is fine as she is too far to be hit by it.
That said, in open-world ordinary PvE at least, the warrior feels like she can put out more damage than the ranger. A group of 3-4 ordinary mobs goes down quickly to hundred blades, etc. whereas the ranger would likely be shooting one and kiting a couple since the pets struggle to keep aggro on multiple mobs and auto-attack hits only one target. Basically, in situations where the warrior’s regen signet can balance out the incoming damage, she’s superior in terms of efficiency. In cases where she’s taking a lot of big hits, the ranger is. Unfortunately, in instances, the latter seems to be rule rather than the exception.
I’ve done all the vistas and JPs in the game (apart from Halloween and Christmas ones because the timed aspect just annoys/frustrates me and I get too stressed to jump well) and I have to say, I loathe Breached Wall. It’s not the worst one, perhaps, but the constantly spawning ghosts and some of the tricky textures make it very frustrating. I think its difficulty in comparison to other vistas at that level makes it feel more annoying as well – in general the vistas are easier than the JPs, though they increase in difficulty somewhat as you level.
GL if you try again OP, and if you get really stuck see if a friendly mesmer can help you out! The jumping does get easier with practice (and also if you are not a Norn – the difference in jumping on my Sylvari and my Norn is massive.)
Please help baby quaggan find his mommy..
Ok I went ‘Awwww!’ IRL looking at these pictures.
I am, however, a terminal soft-hearted fool/carebear!
I really liked Sieran too, I was gutted when she died. The whole last act of the personal story is just nearly every named NPC getting knocked off, it is kind of depressing. When I played through Vigil the second time it wasn’t as bad, partly because Forgal was older and said it was how he wanted to go, and partly because I knew what was coming so had more emotional distance, I guess. But Sieran was so young and flighty, she still had so much living to do…
The other one that really cheesed me off was poor Havroun Grechen and her totally awesome bear armour. Having met and liked Grechen in the Norn story quest, I jokingly announced to my guild ‘oh, Grechen is here, if they kill her off too there will be a reckoning!’ And then…gaaaaargh.
I blame Logan. (It is our guild policy to always blame Logan. We are not his biggest fans. Tee hee.)
No, I don’t think so. I have played a number of subscription-based MMOs in the past but the market has changed now. It would take a pretty spectacular and innovative game to get me to sign up for a sub again, I think, because it would need to not just be good, but £10-15 per month better than any of the F2P or B2P games out there, which would take some doing.
There are definitely some styles on NPCs that aren’t available for players. I don’t know if it was down to issues with clipping or customisation or if they ran out of time, given Sylvari were only available in the last beta test if I am remembering rightly. I do think it would be nice to get a few more in since there are so few compared to Norns, for example – could do sort of mossy dreadlocks, or dandelion fluff, actual flowers/flower petals, or vines for curly hair just off the top of my head (no pun intended!)
Agree on the faces as well, there is one Sylvari female face I really like (has sort of rounded, flowery-looking pattern around the eyes) but if you try to change the default pupil size she goes hopelessly cross-eyed.
Have you got the rest of the materials you need to upgrade it to Twilight? I haven’t got anything like enough gold for a precursor yet (probably Kudzu for me, or maybe Dawn for my warrior) but I am just slowly gathering the rest of the stuff I need and then I’ll see what kind of state my finances are in when I have everything else ready – or if indeed I’ve been lucky and found a precursor somewhere. By then, the scavenger hunt or some other precursor-dropping event could have been implemented, hopefully. Even if I don’t get a drop myself, it would presumably drop the prices in the TP the way the Karka event did.
In the meantime, the weapon I have is just as good stat-wise (it’s another exotic), so I’m not losing out.
Good luck!
Hiya,
I am putting together a heavy armour set for my Norn warrior and in having a look through the PvP locker I’ve found some legs called ‘PvP Guild Greaves’ which match nicely with the Guild Tabard chestpiece you can get in PvE. I am wondering if there is a PvE version of these legs available anywhere, and my googlekittenis proving to be weak in this instance.
The ‘Banded’ set legs are very similar, but the cut of the cloth is slightly different and the skirt/kilt element looks wider and somewhat ‘stretched’ (at least in preview) compared to the ‘Guild’ version.
Any suggestions?
This may have already been covered, but will I have to do all the jumping puzzle achievements again? (Please say no! Some are fun to repeat but other ones tested my already-tenuous grip on sanity to the limit…)
I haven’t had any in a week or two I think, but a lot of my playtime dungeons and WvW which don’t tend to drop them much. Have been disappointed not to get them at some point from gathering at least though, since I’ve completed the daily achievement most days.
I am having this experience on my second character as well. I had it to some extent on my first as well, but as I planned to get 100% map completion (and indeed have done so) I didn’t mind going ‘back’ to other races’ areas to catch up on levels, as everything was new and fresh. However, I am now slightly regretting not waiting to get 100% map completion until my next toon is levelled because I have already seen the whole world, completed all the hearts, all the jumping puzzles, etc. I’m levelling fairly slowly because it isn’t as interesting the second time round unless I happen upon different events, so it feels like more of a grind than it did originally even though I have a better idea of what I’m doing.
So, I can definitely understand where the OP is coming from. I was encouraged to really explore everything first time through but that can backfire for levelling alts as there’s less new content. New patches should help though as there will be things that my 80 hasn’t done yet.
Yes I don’t know why some people are being so dismissive. Some people are more affected by things in a game than others, and that’s ok. Personally, I didn’t enjoy playing Empire/Dark Side in SWTOR because it made me uncomfortable. I didn’t ask for it to be removed, or anything, nor do I think people who enjoy playing a Sith or Imperial are bad or immoral; it’s just not for me. I don’t see why looking at the implications of quests, or thinking critically, means that there is something wrong with OP or s/he needs to ‘stop playing’ or ‘take the blue pill.’
Thinking: give it a try!
I wonder…would all the very pro-nudity people feel the same way if it included something along the lines of a mod I remember coming out for Dragon Age: Origins which changed all the male character models to be nude with fully erect genitalia at all times? (Boy were there some weird and disturbing screenshots flying around using that mod.) I am guessing that people might not think it was so cute and harmless if a naked male character started following them around or making gestures at them.
I don’t want to get into a big derail deconstructing how female nudity/sexuality is perceived as passive and consumable vs. male nudity/sexuality being perceived as active and predatory, just putting that out there for consideration.
You know you could at least read what he said. We wont force anyone to play WWW, especially the original players of this realm that like PvE. What he said is about other guilds transferring to RoS that wouldn’t want to play WWW. Why would he ytransfer anyway since PvE is the same everywhere?
Below are the exact words you should of read. Do not take them out of the context please.
At the same time we don’t accept guilds whose primary focus is not the war in the borderland and although we respect the PvE native guilds of this server, we will do everything in our power to reject the PvE guilds that will want to get Surmia, and at the stubborn ones we promise to do everything possible to ruin their game.
I read it the first time, thanks. And I don’t believe I am misunderstanding anything. It is there in black and white: ‘we promise to do everything possible to ruin their game’ if those nasssty, awful PvE’ers try to DARE to set foot on ‘your’ precious WvW server. As to why they would? With cross-server grouping there is less of a need, but who knows? You certainly have no right whatsoever to try to strongarm, bully or grief people out of doing so, just because you think you’re special WvW snowflakes who deserve your own special snowflake playground.
Still pathetic. Still despicable. Still disgusting. Still classless. I understood just fine.
