Areana Net when are you guys going to just say “Oops we broke the open world hang on folks we’ll get this all fixed up soon”
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Alone-on-the-map/first#post782712
Don’t know if it’s been mentioned before, but putting in ascended items also made the following page superfluousness; http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mystic_Forge/Other_Items
Why craft an extremely expensive weapon when it will become obsolete in a few months.
Why even learn any of the weapon and armor crafting skills now?
I haven’t logged in since the announcement except to check a few things out. I highly recommend if you hate this move by Arena Net don’t log-in take a break and consider if this if the game you want to continue supporting.
I will not play this game in its current state and I’m not login-in again until I see what Arena Net’s nest move is.
Right now Arena Net is not going to say a word until they have a chance to compile the numbers and ascertain if they took a step ahead or a step back in revenue generation. Until Arena Net figures out what side of the pile of money they’re on we won’t hear anything official.
Your non-participation is the loudest statement you can make and the only thing we can hope for is that there are enough of us to effect change.
If the numbers are not in our favour we’ll just be scraped off like a scab.
“this is the MMO for the rest of us” ……ya right! ….played suk,eR
The cry’s for the single player open world end game have started as a result of fewer players participating in the the content…… it’s like watching a train come off the tracks in slow motion.

The question were not that hard, Do you like to PvP/WvW , Do you like jumping puzzles? …… and I’ll add one more, Do you like making your character as powerful as they can be?
i find parts of pve, spvp, and wvw fun. which i play depends on my mood. im not overly concerned with gear.
Well, some people ARE concerned with gear, not just because of personal gearing, but for the implications it has on the game as a whole. They care about the fundamental change ascended gear has brought to the game.
Why are you trying to convince these people that they should be as unconcerned as you are with regards to gear?
I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything, in fact I sympathize with those that were shocked by this new gear I don’t think any of us seen this coming or expected this with the whey this game was marketed or the way the endgame was outlined to us.
That said I feel the gear is less of a concern then the fact that we have less options and reduced freedom of how we explore the elder game. That and the separation and disconnect this brings to the community.
Here’s my feeling on that…. I suggest reading the entire thread
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/The-New-GW2-Flavor-Rocks/page/2#post812793
the gear is optional. not required. just do the stuff you find fun. you said you like “open world multi-player events”. good. the new gear is not required to do that.
Not required yet, but once the full set becomes available the endgame zones are going to need to have a power increases to ensure they don’t become trivial.
Everyone wants a path to the best stuff in the game, a few days ago Arena Net seemed to respect that today not so much. So the games appeal has demised.
You didn’t answer my question about PvP do you like PvP, or here’s another one. What if they made you complete every jumping puzzle in the game to get the components you need to mystic forge yourself up a piece of your Ascended gear ….what then how would you feel about it then?
Today the game is less because they pigeonholed me into game play I don’t care for.
can you not do DE’s anymore? the events now require this new gear? if your asking me what i would and wouldnt do for new gear, i play the game to have fun. i do things i find fun. i don’t do things i don’t find fun. don’t really know how to answer other than that.
The question were not that hard, Do you like to PvP/WvW , Do you like jumping puzzles? …… and I’ll add one more, Do you like making your character as powerful as they can be?
Yet another example of how bad game design breeds a bad community
Just a few days ago we had a community of players that would risk death and a repair bill to fight their way to you face down in the mud body. Today we have this ….

im sick of all this kitten on these forums. if you guys feel like your grinding or being forced to do something then don’t do it. the premise is really simple. Play the game for fun. have fun with the game. when you stop having fun take a break. you aren’t being forced to farm/grind or whatever else you want to call it. it’s not required to do anything in the game. so just remember it’s a game, have fun. if your not having fun, take a break. you already bought the game and it will be here when you’re ready to have fun again.
I don’t have a problem with a new level of gear, and I don’t consider it a grind if you’re having fun while working towards an achievement or goal.
But the (FUN) is what they broke about the game for me. See I don’t like dungeons much, I like the open world multi-player events and before this patch I had a fun path to the best gear in the game, now I have to run a dungeon for it.
Karma was the currency of fun, Karma let you play the game and just do what you wanted yet tick you closer to the top achievements just by playing the game. This ended with the introduction of Ascended gear and Infusions.
Now, consider this, what if next month they put in the next 2 pieces of Ascended gear only instead of dungeon runs you have to complete (X) amount of WvW or PvP content achievements. How would you feel then? Many players don’t even touch PvP or WvW and I guaranty a whole new crowed of people would be here complaining about that.
So have some empathy for those players out there that don’t play the game exactly like you or have as much free time as you and understand that a few days ago this game was flexible enough to appeal to more players then it does today, and what you see on the forums is the fallout over this.

Excellent, OP. This is exactly what I’ve been thinking, but you articulated your words better than I ever would have.
Thanks Sethisapanda, and everyone else that left kind words.
Ok here is a POV.
Why are people so overly concerned with the introduction of this new gear tier?
If you dont wan’t to do it (obtain, gather etc.) then don’t, simple. Or is it because you know you will do it but could not be bothered with another task?
If the latter is the case then why bother with it?
See, its a loop.
There are lots of tasks/goals/achievements to do in this game. All of which require “grinding” to complete. This new ‘Ascended’ gear tier is no different.
The point is, people are drawn towards completing stuff but hate to put in the effort – well tough luck my friend(s). The higher the reward the more effort needs to be put in.
I don’t see anything wrong with the introduction of the Ascended gear. Its not demoralising, however, what it does is add more content and cater for those who want to use it.
:)
Death Reincarnated.3570, I respect your opinion and I’m less concerned about the new tier of gear then I am about obsolete open world content, loss of player options and mechanics that have been damaged by this patch.
Before this patch players had multiple paths to the highest level gear in the game. You could just play your game and whatever content that floated your boat. By just collecting Karma and or collecting crafting mats I could get into Exotic gear.
Arena Net basically made a game that valued all forms of play and didn’t favour one over the other.
Today that’s been lost and that’s turned me off of the game. Arena Net now has removed my endgame options and is forcing me into a dungeon when I really want to be in the open world. For me I found the open world to be the most fun, and I enjoyed crafting as I do in most MMO’s on the 16th of November I lost both of my paths to the best rewards in the game. So as a result I’ve chose to set this game down until Arena Net can return the endgame freedom that was promised and they delivered on up to Nov.16th.
But this fully outlined the things I believe they broke with this patch.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/The-New-GW2-Flavor-Rocks/first
This is something that existed prior to ascended gear, and was something that we saw happen all the time in GW1, even without any sort of gear progression. Some players, typically people who play the game a lot, tend to only want to play with other players that play like them. They require some sort of proof to get into their party, whether it be displaying your Lightbringer Title, equipping or linking some type of gear, or using some other method of showing that you have already done and are experienced with the content. While ascended gear might be the new excuse, this behavior happens regardless.
While this is not really something that we want to encourage, players do have the choice to play the game in the way they want. We can’t force those players to be all-inclusive in who they invite to the parties they create, and to be honest, doing so would probably make people even more unhappy than they are now, and lead to a lot of undesirable behavior.
Why would a player who doesn’t know me ask me to display the possession of a piece of gear that did not influence the stats of my character what would that prove?
Players in a tier gear progression game want to see other players gear stats to know that they will not be disadvantage by an under equipped player.
Andrew let me ask this, as I understand it, it was a design decision for GW2 to remove barriers that get in the way of players freely playing with anyone (like the removal of the trinity)
The trend we are seeing, Self-imposed by the community or not, is more and more reports of players refusing to play with players that are on lower level scale for FotM, I only see this trend growing when Infusions become more prevalent.
Do you feel GW2 with the addition of another tier of armor, special mitigation mechanic and scaling dungeon levels has remained true to that theme or has added barriers for players to freely group up play with anyone?
Have these systems made players more or less selective about who they group with?
Yes please, sign me up….. could we get at least on pre Nov 15 server
They are forbidden because they could be counted……I think that number would be shocking
I guess Arena Net could have saved alot of cash if they just released the game with a lobby for the FotM and left the rest of the world on the cutting room floor.
we still have to take into consideration that most players, didnt even see all the zones and dungeons, even on STORY mode, yet.
so really.
yeah the fractals are a downward spiral treadmill for that minority few who went thru all the content.
but i “hope” there is still a lot of people that have 100-200h played and are not done with even half the content that are still going to do the other parts, at least once, while the players that played too much will farm the fractals like D3 zombies.
I got to have over 500 hours into the game and I haven’t seen many of the old dungeons but the problem is if you fall behind on the fractals dungeon and the community out paces you in difficulty level, you have problems finding a group. So many people are sort of afraid to get off the hamster wheel at the moment.
(edited by Logun.2349)
Well considering the long drawn out way they are releasing the Ascended gear and the Karma nerfs it’s likely the old dungeons and open world endgame areas will be obsolete for a while. Welcome to the new FotM game.
http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/11/19/flameseeker-chronicles-guild-wars-2s-lost-shores-recap/
Elisabeth Cardy just put up a “Lost Shores” recap article at massively. She doesn’t even mention the Ascended armor debacle, or this thread.
I mean … really? It’s not even worth mentioning?
Ya, many fan site based news is that way, they worry about not getting there interview or pre-view look of the next project if they report on something negative.
Could be she’s holding out on reporting on the issues until she’s had a chance to see the effects of what’s going on first hand.
In some ways, this new direction also leaves me disappointed.
1.) It does seem like Anet abandoned some of it’s original design goals. I feel these changes really contradict the GW2 “Manifesto” and Mike O’Brien’s own words.
2.) Gear progression is really a treadmill as the game just get balanced around the new numbers anyway. You end up running just to stay in place
3.) Power creep just ends up making a ton of game content effectively “obsolete”.
4.) When you offer one type of gameplay as the straightest path to the “best rewards” you end up inducing your player base to overly partake in that form of gameplay, which leaves the rest of the game empty.Sadly, I worry that the “ascended gear” move is likely to end up siphoning off the player base into instances which will effectively hamper the rest of the game because the player base will no longer be in the “world” interacting with each other which is what makes and MMOG an MMOG.
I really wish Arenanet had stuck to their guns and focused on “open, real world pve” over the instanced experience. I know a lot of the events can seem zergy or barren at times (most of the time actually) but I think the game would be better off if they had fixed those issues rather than just give carrots and “stuff to do” in instances.
The world really didn’t need another WoW clone, even though I love WoW.
Couldn’t agree with this more! Their efforts would have been better spent on polishing and adding to the open world end game.
Arena Net are you seeing what kind of community you are breeding?
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/I-ll-be-honest-about-the-gear-and-gearchecks
OP,…When the group dynamic event are undoable, the way point are all in contention and the open world zones are void of players and your repair bill are stacking up because players are whisked away into pocked 5 man dungeons in pursuit of the best items in the game let us know in a month or so how this has effected your game
It probably won’t affect it at all, since there’s a group of players who just don’t care and want to play casually. I doubt this will be much of an issue.
You no what ProphetSword, for everyone still giving this game their all I hope your right, but Arena Net is going to need to give their open world dynamic events some love if they want them to keep attracting a critical mass of players needed to keep them viable.
OP,…When the group dynamic event are undoable, the way point are all in contention and the open world zones are void of players and your repair bill are stacking up because players are whisked away into pocked 5 man dungeons in pursuit of the best items in the game let us know in a month or so how this has effected your game
Thanks for your opinion Khristophoros.7194, I hope for this games sake I am overstating the problems ( but I don’t think I am) but none the less they are problems that didn’t exist before this patch and we already have multiple confirmations on the forums that all these issues have already been encounter.
The main thing I disagree with is when you said the agony mechanic will cause people to discriminate.
First of all, it applies only to one dungeon. If it’s an issue, it’s not as big as you make it seem. You can still do all the other dungeons and other content just like before.
Secondly, from my experience playing fractals, I doubt that people will want to pug higher difficulties anyway. I think the higher difficulties of this dungeon are designed for organized groups. I don’t see that as a problem because it’s only a small part of the game. It’s not a trend that the game is heading in. They’re not changing any other content to be like it.
So. The real issue here is that the whole game is being focused around this new dungeon regardless of if players want to play it or not. Adding other ways to get ascended gear aside from this dungeon will fix that.
Have you ever played a game with mitigation armor? This isn’t a 25 man raid that you might be able to take one or two guys in under equipped. The majority of people are going to want to stack there odds of success by eliminating players that are under equipped….Right? No one is going to want a 5th guy along they have to keep picking up off the floor.
Not that it matters much since we see it happening right now with players not wanting to run the dungeon with players on a lower difficulty and others looking for a gear score tool.
And yes, adding back the “Play the game your way” systems they broke with this dungeon would go a long way to fixing the problem.
CURRENTLY, the only way to acquire ascended rings is through Fractals of the Mist.
CURRENTLY, the only way to acquire ascended back items is through the Mystic Forge.
CURRENTLY, there is no way to acquire ascended items for any other equipment slot.ArenaNet designers have stated that it will eventually be possible to acquire a full set of ascended items, and that the methods to obtain them will range from PvP to WvW to PvE to dungeons.
So clearly, the CURRENT situation may require us to do mostly Fractals of the Mist in order to acquire pink-lettered items. But as more ascended item types are released into the game, this is likely to change.
And besides, if you are not already fully geared in exotics, you don’t even need to chase after the ascended items just yet. Orange items are still the best there are for everything except rings and back items, while you work towards your purple weapon for the next year or so.
And that’s great and all, so then the developers should be able to put allot of my fears to rest should they ever care to detail when they plan to add these option and answer a few questions on their new direction.
Will you ever put a path back to the top end gear via Karma and crafting?
How they plan on supporting the open world endgame content?
How they see the open world endgame content living alongside all-day–sucker endgame instanced content whisking away players into their private little 5 man games.
How they plan to fix the separation between players that’s cropping up if you don’t keep up the repeatable dungeon difficulty level?
How they plan to deal with players refusing to group with other based on their mitigation (Agony) armor?
Since this new gear power level was introduced without an increase in levels will the open world level 80 zones have their Mob strength increased so they do not become trivial?
When is the next projected gear increase coming, in WoW we can expect one every 12 to 18 months what plans are there to keep the game viable after this?

The original post is an excellent post.
I agree 100% with the OP.
It is really, really sad that this is the new direction of the game. It’s actually quite disappointing that a ‘new direction’ was even thought of, let alone, implemented.
The worst part is the silence from Anet. This silence speaks volumes. This silence is deafening. Agree with the ‘new direction’ or not it is the only direction, and they will not change their minds on it because they no longer care. It is now all about copying #1 to try and get a slice of that pie.
It really is a shame…
Agree, the silence in all of this is the most disconcerting thing.
I find it very odd that we haven’t heard anything from the original team regarding this patch and explaining how this all fits with the original development ideologies.
It is the betrayal that’s the key factor here, but it doesn’t end with just the new gear level, they made a mess of this game with this patch.
People got sold on their ideologies that they had a better way and I bought into it, as many others did. I still believe the mechanics they came up with for dynamic event and open world endgame combat are a fresh approach to MMO design.
Removing all the things that make MMO’s worse the more players there are to share the environment with was genius. Removing boundaries that prevented players from playing together by removing the trinity was innovative and smart. Spontaneously prompting players to the action to have REAL massively multi-player interaction is where this genre needs to go. Giving players an open world end game option again, brilliant. Introducing Karam as the currency of progression that allowed you to play your game the way you wanted and find a path to the best rewards in the game again was genies. They valued everyone play style regardless of how you chose to play the game.
Breaking most of this and rendering the open world virtually obsolete with a single patch was a betrayal that we haven’t seen the likes of since SWG’s NGE.
I really can’t believe they did this, and I don’t see this peppered in gear progression bringing anyone back to the game. What they really need to do IMHO is fix what’s broke and work on improving the open world experience which is this games REAL strength instead of this instanced over done endgame.
They bought and paid for all the bad press they’re getting and deserve every bit of it and I don’t begrudge anyone for pursuing a refund.

Great Write Up Wintyre, you might want to have a read of this thread and the covering the other mechanics of the game they broke with this patch. (That are all come true now just days after this patch)

While i enjoyed your post and i find it to be very thoughtful and entertaining i can’t let this one go:
It is called “Bait and Switch”. You switch the product after you bait the customer.
Fixed that up for ya Sky, Thanks
I’d actually be ok with another layer of gear in the game if they didn’t break the rest of the game putting it in, going against their own ideologies, Puting systems in that players are now using to segregate others from the content. The new gear is just a symptom of the epidemic of issues they unleashed into the game. Including rendering the open world endgame areas obsolete and unplayable.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/The-New-GW2-Flavor-Rocks/page/2#post796922
I don’t see this new tier of gear as any kind of saving grace that will have players flocking back to the game. It has the same problems as the Legendary weapons where you need to assemble them in a convoluted ritual at the mystic forge, I don’t think that does much for the gear progression hungry.
If I was playing this game for gear progression I want the rush of downing the end boss and prying a Ascended item from its cold dead hands ….not get some crafting component I got to read about on the inter net to figure out what I got to combine with it to make a shiny.
That Other MMO’s is always going to do the progression game better because they’re writing the rule book. To win in this MMO game you have to write a New rule book and stick to it…..it’s the harder and longer road to hoe but doing what came before and then doing it badly is the kiss of death.
Yet another example, I could have been this guy ….. a few hours late to the party and now SOL.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/So-normal-players-are-screwed
Here is yet another symptom of the mechanics introduced with this patch. Don’t blame the players for asking for this, this is just another example of how things like resistance armor and scaling difficulty work to divide players.
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Please-add-gear-score-2
3 days ago the guy asking for a tool to segregate you from his epic-ness was likely getting a combat rez in the open world from you, today you’re not good enough to be in his group.
That’s how much the game has change in just a few short days.
Ever ask a person what armor they had equipt before giving them a hand up in a open world fight ….no me either.
This is how negative and positive game mechanics impact community.
Shame, I think you can tell what side of the slop we’re on.
I hate being right…..
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/I-cannot-find-a-Fractal-group-to-run-with
Well if they did that they’d be half way to fixing what they broke.
Unfortunatly ANet has no community management to confirm this or even seem to care about calming the mases.
Don’t blame the players the community is shaped by the game mechanics, and Arena Net abandon their own core values and went off the tracks with this one.
Any veteran MMO player could have saw this one coming.

Don’t worry I’m sure by next month the client will not have a problem rendering players
Multiple threads where people have done the side by side math.
Ok, let do the side by side math.
Ascended ring: http://www.gw2db.com/items/71363-yakkingtons-ring
Yakkingtons Ring
51 Power
51 Precision
%10 Magic Find
+18 Precision
+18 PowerUnused Infusion Slot.
Total of 69 Power, 69 Precision, 10% magic find.
Exotic Ring: http://www.gw2db.com/items/58007-opal-orichalcum-ring

+15 Power
+15 Precision
+4% Magic findTotal of +63 Power, +63 Precision, +7% Magic find.
The ascended has 6 more power and precision and 3% more magic find.
63/69=.91
or the ascended has 9% more stats then the exotic, aside from the magic find. Its a boost, but not a major one, nor 20%
Now look up the stats on an infusion
What changes? The ascended gear?? It doesn’t take much for you people to write a book about -.-
Allot more has changes then just the new gear, visit a open world level 80 zone next week and see if it still feels like the same game.
That last bit you add at the end hit a cord for me, regarding respect for the player that IMHO I think they have abandoned.
But on the gear gap bit, let me explain, it not that there was a gap in power it’s that there’s a huge gap in what it takes to obtain an Exotic item vs a Legendary weapon.
The problem is it’s a convoluted path of combining crap in the mystic forger obtaining the precursor weapon and then combining more stuff to get the gifts and it all feels more like crafting then actually winning a fight and getting a trophy.
Because most people just want to go kill stuff following a step by step spread sheet of hoops to jump through just isn’t fun for a cosmetic upgrade and therefore most people just saw Exotics as the end of the road.
IMHO …what they should have done was not make it any easier to get an legendary but instead made the path to them a little less convoluted and more based on rare drops in the world.
I’ll also ask this, allot of people are raving about how much fun the new dungeon is ….. so would it instantly be less fun if it was just for cosmetic improvements with Agony as the only upgrade?
Are Eric Flannum and Colin Johanson out of the picture?
From vertical progression, to power creep, to player separation. To really dumb stuff like, placing mobs on platforms in dungeons in a game where half your defence is based on the dodge mechanic …. Or in this case they should call it the ….fall and go splat mechanic.
I’m starting to think they don’t ever play their own game….LOL
Does anyone have News on Eric Flannum and Colin Johanson?
Agreed.
We need a really clear statement from ANet that Ascended gear will be available through crafting, WvW, open world content, in addition to dungeons, and that there won’t be a big stretch of time between its addition to the other spheres of gameplay.
They have indicated this might be the case, but not with the clarity necessary.
I don’t like the gear treadmill, but I will tolerate it if I can reasonably keep up without running dungeons.
Here is a question. Why was it rolled out without offering those other ways to obtain it? The exotic has all paths. This is a new tier afterall. So if you are trying to stay within your game framework, why only make it obtainable via a dungeon?
Oh wait, traditional MMOs do that. You can only obtain the top tier gear via dungeon runs. So if it was offered via the other methods now, would those that love this approach have really come back or played more?
And if not, will they really introduce the other methods anytime soon. Having it available via other means in the next 4-6 months is too late. By then, the people who spend a lot of time running dungeons will fully out gear everyone else and therefore, be more powerful based on gear alone. Oh wait again, I think I just answered my question.
I’m all full of predictions today, but I think it will come to light that the game is under new management or something like that. Eric Flannum and Colin Johanson must be out of the picture.

If given the choice I wouldn’t have to give it a second thought. I’d transfer to a pre-patch server in a sec.

This will never happen but if given the choice who would join me on a server patched back to before this latest patch?
If given the choice I wouldn’t have to give it a second thought.
I am not all for the accended gear and all either. However, I try to work within the system ankittenrying to give it a try like it or not.
I like the concept of the new dungeon. Kind of neat and all, however, and this is a big however, is that I am having a tough time trying to get a group together. I am still level 1. Have not had much time to play this weekend. The issue is people asking for higher levels so they do not have to go back down again. To me this is the biggest issue with that dungeon.
I spent an hour trying to get a group yesterday and was not able to. I am a level 80 with full exotics and am an engineer( which already hurts against me). With not being able to play from the get go, people now are in the upper levels and they do not want to go back and help anyone out. Some say join a guild. I am in a guild, however, 80% of the guild as quit because of some of these issues which pretty much leaves me alone again.
I though well I can wait it out a week until they reset. Well I guess I found out they they will not reset which means anyone trying to do this dungeon later is pretty much out of luck.
I am trying to work with what they gave us and unfortuntely with this type of dungeon system, it will pretty much leave me out of it because that is the nature of the beast with this type of set up. Get behind, fall behind and left out.
I’m really sorry to hear that Sardonia.
I didn’t expect my fears I talked about in the opening post to be realised this soon. Like I said the live team seems to not realise how MMO players castoff players that they feel could impede there progress.
The original developers (ankittenep using that term because I can’t believe any of them could be involved with this tragedy) were smart enough to recognise the things that prevented players from grouping and putting up self-imposed walls and did away with them.
The live team seams to have thrown out the GW2 development hand book and are doing there own thing.
This one made me LOL….it’s like the live team decided to ignore every mechanic in the game and just said “it will be so cool if we add this” with no consideration at all on how what they were jamming in would impact the game.
3. Just to add another little sadistic kick to this; MAKE HALF MY SKILLS THAT ARE WORTH HAVING CAUSE ME TO LEAP OFF OF PLATFORMS IM FIGHTING ON!!! Dodge the mob attacking you? Over you go! Bottom of the cliff for you!
If you got this far and are curious about the title of this post that’s how the bait and shift works when you advertise one thing and deliver something unexpected.
According to EU and US laws with ‘bait and switch’ we can get our money back from Anet, but will you refund our time reading this post? :P
Well the post was free so I’ll gladly refund that. Just like Arena Net will refund your game purchase. However the time you spent reading it is gone forever just like the 3 months of time you spent in this game.
