Rate the Asura Name Above You!

The concept of a genius named Nimrod makes me laugh. Interesting usage and justification of Saint.

My Asura is Puuk The Procacious. Use a dictionary, bookah!

I really wanted to use opprobrious or contumelious, but it reduced the character name to three letters and that seemed awkward.

Events and starting area(s).

I started out playing a LOT of human alts. Within a couple weeks it was to the point where I knew what events were going to take place where and would hang around each heart area until I did them all. I’m a completionist, I guess. Doing this, as you can imagine, slooooooows things down but I like it. It doesn’t slow things down TOO much; I can usually see all the events for each area in what seems like 20-30 minutes. I say seems because I haven’t timed it, and it’s possible it’s just that my perception is skewed.

When I finally started a representative of the Superior Race last night, I very quickly ran into my first… hm, inconsistency? I had wiki’d the events in the starting area and knew that in Soren Daa there were 2 I wanted to see. I hung around. And hung around. And hung around some more, and then read Green Arrow Year One, and then played with emotes and lo! I got to compete with a couple of bookahs to subdue the golem rebellion for Grumm. I never saw the thieves.

So this leads to the question, as a total noob: Are the dynamic events triggered by population density and not scheduled like I thought, or do the first couple of events in the Asura starting area have a particularly long time between them? Or am I crazy even for an Asura?

The broom was only the beginning. I would wager on cosmetic mounts that do not change speed.

LowestTruth is really making me want to create a character named Thuggin Mc Lyfe and devote an unhealthy amount of time to it ‘til I’m quite the skilled player with him/her.

You should totally do that, because it would… uh… well, it would do something.

Edit: What I find REALLY funny is that I’ve never reported or blocked anyone based on a name, even on an RP server.

What, exactly, would you even report someone for? It’s not as if there are any official RP servers. What I find really funny, in a sad, pathetic way, is that people are actually reporting other people, simply because they don’t like their names. Offensive names are one thing, but to report someone on the basis of non-lore, or breaking immersion? Seriously?

Well, yeah, exactly. The only reason for reporting in this game is the usual racist or vulgar names. Right now I’m just amused because this isn’t even the usual so-what-if-I-break-your-immersion anti-ToS RP server crap, which I never cared about anyways. NOW it’s an accept-my-stupid-name or you’re a stupid snob! Like it matters what I think about your character.

But labeling other human beings as inherently lazy, uncreative or stupid just because they don’t hold the same standard in character naming isn’t exactly intellectual highrolling either.

I don’t think you’re entirely wrong, but I’ll be likewise honest. I am not going to write the player off as lazy, uncreative, or stupid. It does not make one person better than another person to have a lore-centric name. I am not better than Mr. Underwear Streak’s Player in any way, shape, or form.

That said, I’m running around a fantasy world with a fantasy character trying to get into the fantasy. I am totally not going to waste my limited time online interacting with Mr. Skidmark on the chance he might be a cool dude. I have no incentive. I could approach every encounter like a dewy-eyed optimist, or I can use all my incredible years of MMO experience that tells me someone with a silly name is probably going to, y’know. Act silly. I’m not playing to act silly. To each his own.

Edit: What I find REALLY funny is that I’ve never reported or blocked anyone based on a name, even on an RP server. I’m lazy that way. I’m not going to tell you that you’re wrong, or you’re irritating, or that you’re an idiot for having a name I find eye-rollingly stupid. Again, lazy. I am just going to pass by and ignore you. If you find THAT offensive, man. Don’t ever visit NY.

Being an insufferable little snob and snubbing strangers because of their character name just marks you as an unpleasant person I don’t want to associate with.

Except in this case, there’s a reason not to like you.

Oh no! A random stranger on a random server might not pay attention to you because you have a third grade name! Man, that must mean I’m totally unpleasant and a right kitten! Hi, I’m kettle. Are you pot?

It only irritates me on “official” RP servers in various games. If it’s not an RP server, it’s more of a “look at that idiot!” and move on type of thing. My kids are well-trained though; they will announce stupid names they find so we can all have a good eyeroll.

It’s all about impatience; they want to play, they don’t want to see “name already in use” over and over and over again. It’s worse when there’s no name generator.

I will admit to having name prejudice, though. I just won’t waste my time with someone stupidly named. I’m sure I miss out on some nice but challenged folks through that.

I’ve had characters in other MMOs named Sammich, Icybeer, Gnomefoot…

Hell, my Thief’s named Scumbag Mawile.

Guess I’m degenerate filth, an idiot at best.

You know what bothers me more than silly names? Pointless elitism.

You don’t care if what irritates me irritates me, and I don’t care if what irritates you irritates you. That’s how it works.

While I can’t say that I empathize with your original point, I will say that certain characteristics of names seem to reflect certain characteristics of the players that choose them. Generally negative characteristics.

Speaking of which, were you trying to write “Denominator” …? Or is there something I’m missing?

Well, let’s not go overboard. Forum handles are forum handles.

Hmm, never thought of it that way. I always took some time to tweak my character at the creation screen, and that includes thinking of a name. I didn’t realize so many people just want to hit “Go.”

It’s most obvious when you’re trying to piddle around in something like DCUO — let me tell you, Superbatman135553737 starts to look pretty good as a name after you hear a cheery computer say “ERROR!” name-already-in-use fifty times.

Standard looking-for-a-guild post.

I’d like some clever guildchat to listen to whilst I explore the world with a couple characters and some dazzling backup for those tough moments. I’d like a group to hit dungeons with when I get there who aren’t going to carry me but aren’t going to min/max me either. Thems the basics.

Ideally:

Peeps who run around IC in the world. Y’know, like say and shout.
Age range of middle to fogey. My nerd goatee is half gray.
No pressure, because I usually have an agenda when I log in. And a low tolerance for city RP and drama, but occasionally participate in one of them.
Has an understanding of altoholics. I think I’m detox’d, though.
Patient, kind, does not envy, does not boast, is not proud, etc, etc. That’s from 1 Corinthians. Or maybe 2nd. I can never remember. The 13th chapter. Or maybe the 8th.
Witty and pretty and clever and wise. Like my wife! Who lets me play.
The group knows every lyric to the Once More With Feeling musical but won’t sing it on Vent. Unless you’re actually a cast member, of course.
Raises baby raccoons? I’ve always wanted one.

Did I mention I’m on TC? It’s there in the subject line. I love you, and you’re probably totally wonderful and your guild is the bestest creation ever, but I’m not transferring if I don’t know you. You don’t know me, man.

I am a lot quieter than this in the game and do not use italics either.

I think it’s pretty cold and unsympathetic of both support and staff reading this thread to be silent. Just my opinion. Doesn’t do anything for the human face of the game. Hope others’ experiences are better. I’d say stuff about empathy, compassion, and add a few shame-on-yous, but meh. All too familiar.

I’m a total noob to GW2, having just started playing this weekend. I looked through a lot of guides trying to get a feel for what first character to play — this is by far, FAR the best leveling guide I’ve stumbled across. Descriptive, clear, concise, and easy to understand for the acronymless and clueless. Thanks much, Kai. Trying this out tonight after work.
