You know what would be really good. A spvp session with the balance testers. Maybe it will open our eyes to how the Ranger can be played by proper experienced testers.

It will open a lot if eyes and minds.

Any chance we can organise this? They wont even have to speak to people. Let the actionspeak for itself

Maybe I’m just really cynical, but I think this is a pretty disingenuous post.

Molten Alliance Pick [merged]

So, I bought a pick. Equipped it on the character I play with my son & daughter (15 & 13). I waited. Soon enough, there was a node. We all ran up to the node. I hit the node. As the animation started, I screamed “Oh crap! I hit a lava pocket! Run!” into Vent. And they ran away, while shrieking IRL.

And that’s why this is probably worth more than ten bucks.

Brutaly can you post again the AH builds? I can’t see them.
BTW does this builds works well in WvW/PvE in general? In sPvP i use silven’s build with meditations because i can’t find a good balance in AH in sPVP.

The builds in this guide are the point allocations only — the specific traits are left blank on purpose. You’ll have to read the guide and pick’em yourself to fit your playstyle.

The original quote. Here, you are railing against randomness, not the limitation of choices that Anet has given us. If your opinion is that randomness is predatory, I’ll call your opinion silly. Especially when when we’re looking at a case where we have consenting customers purchasing a chance at a purely cosmetic/luxury items.

You’re boiling it down too far, stripping it of nuance and shades of grey in favor of rendering it starkly in black-and-white. Everyone knows perfectly well what they’re getting into when they enter the trading card game; buying boosters at a set price and hoping to expand their collection, nab the rares, sell or trade the surplus. It’s a quantifiable market with price lists and expectations that are set.

This is not like that; this is customers being duped into spending money with an expectation of eventually getting what they’re seeking. No percentage, no alternate (on that we agree), nothing but dropping money and hope. How many people would have dropped hundreds of dollars if they knew they had a .00004% chance of getting a skin? More than I’d think, but less than if they publicized the probability. And that crosses the line from oh-fun-a-surprise-gift into a greedy, unethical money grab. The more people who blindly threw money down (tsk on them, their fault, they did it) the more profit made. As always, in my own opinion, which I am perfectly comfortable having called silly. I don’t believe in moral relativism either, so I feel free in calling this unethical. I didn’t make up the “evil” test terminology, that was their baby and something they referred to numerous times.

So are you mad at arbitrarily inflating prices? Or the fact that the product is random?

Why are you projecting anger into my posts?

EDIT: The whole arbitrary worth thing wasn’t even part of my main point, so other than it being a great nitpicker’s target, I’m not sure why you two are fixated upon it. I’m guessing because the rest of my post was chock full of subjective common sense and there wasn’t much to rage about. Carry on, bro.

I guess I’ll repeat myself. Do you think a company providing an item which contains randomized rewards is predatory?

What do you think of Magic: The Gathering then?

Oh, noes. The pointed question of a master debater has backed me into a corner whereupon I must reply or seem evasive and half-hearted, while simultaneously ignoring my own points and pursuing the forum argument like a rabid wolverine instead of agreeing to disagree.

The Blizzard one is where things really come down to it. You tried WoW for free and determined it wasn’t worth the cost to you. Now you’ve examined these skins and determined they’re not worth the cost to you. Same scenario, same determination, same circumstances, yet wildly different conclusions. It’s one or the other, either they’re both “disrespectful” or neither is, unless you can actually come up with a legitimate reason why they’re different.

The Blizzard one would only be accurate in this context if they sold a game card for fifteen bucks that could contain anything from an hour’s subscription to a free lifetime of the game.

You can’t say that having chests is “disrespectful” to players just because you don’t personally like them. You wouldn’t say that grocery stores are disrespecting their customers out of greed by selling pork products (or any other food/drink/item that some group disapproves of) would you?

Yeah, I can. I think the fact that folks are enticed into paying a few hundred dollars for something of arbitrary value, an electronic item with an artificial inflation of worth, is pretty questionable.

To use your example more accurately, if a grocery store sold “Mystery Bags Of Meat” that usually held a hamburger patty and very rarely a prime steak, and people were spending fifty to a hundred dollars for that steak sold nowhere but the mystery bag, I would question that grocery store’s ethics. Whose fault is it? Primarily the customer for being so stupid. But also the store for taking advantage of the people they knew would pay for the bags. I would not frequent that grocery store because I would find it distasteful and irritating. Like I said in a previous post, I think this thing failed the evil test they speak so highly of. They aren’t going to admit it because hey, lots of profit. Along with ill will and frustration; oh, except for the lucky peeps who got a ticket quick. The unlucky ones who spent three or four times what they paid for the game? Alas, RNG. It’s not like the company could make things right for them or anything.

Agree to disagree, I suppose.

PS – I also think casinos and lotteries are predators that milk the poor, so. I have opinions. This was ANET being predatory, not commercial.

A visitor comes to a tavern in a remote corner of Metrica Province. Asurans gathered around the tables occasionally yell numbers out loud and start laughing. “#118833!” or “#88841!”.

The visitor asks the bartender why they are doing this, and the bartender says “They’ve heard the same jokes so many times that they stopped telling them; now they just yell out the numbers.”

The visitor, trying to fit in, yells “#556813!” and no one laughs.

The bartender says “Well, some people can tell jokes and some can’t.”

Necro vs Masmer quality of life

I’ve been trying to settle on one character for over a month. Necromancer has the edge right now. I read a lot of forums, and I’ve come to a conclusion. There is little to no correlation between what actually happens in the game and the doom-and-gloom scenarios spouted on every class board. When someone says “not effective or wanted in PVE content”, what they really mean is that they are not as efficient as another class. They can and do complete all the content just fine, and only the tools are going to reject a class from a PUG just for being that class. Unless you intend on speed-running with the l33t of the l33t, you don’t need to worry about that part.

Even engineers can find dungeon/fractal groups, and they totally suck.

That was a joke.

I have six character slots with peeps ranging from level 10 thru 16, and I’ve been playing since the beginning of March(?). I have remade certain professions several times, and just now have two humans about to leave Queensdale. This slow progression is not my fault.

The problem is that I can’t settle on a profession; they are all fun and bring a lot to the table. None of them seem to have that horrible mechanic or the broken skills that would warrant benching them permanently. As you can obviously see, this puts me in the quandry of switching characters nearly every play session, and sometimes multiple times in one evening.

I suggest you pick all but one of the professions and completely break them (I think the saying is “to the ground”) or make them ugly in some fashion so I don’t have so many choices open to me. I feel like the design of these professions are executed too well. That is squarely on ANET’s shoulders and not mine. What happened to the paradigm of making one profession/class overpowered and the only “real” option for leveling? I am greatly disappointed by the choice to make them all viable in PvE.

If something isn’t rapidly done about this situation, I will eventually have eight 80s and still no idea of which one to “main”. I understand that picking a main is essential to the fun of the game and is something I do not wish to miss. Plus, imagine all of the wasted time I would have wasted in having the other kind of fun while I am exploring various parts of the world. I beg you to consider destroying the majority of the professions.

Thanks for your time.

All the plants on Tyria screaming at once?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: LowestTruth.2635

Ah, I see. The effect would be positive, because:
Survivors of this auditory onslaught would be forced underground for fear of a second occurrence; all races (assuming any Sylvari remain) would have to adapt to a subterranean lifestyle. This, of course, is the precursor to how we will eventually confront and defeat the Elder dragon Primordius.
Effect: positive. Thank you, screaming plants.

It would be quite ironic, though, if the underground moss then joined in on the screaming.

I believe the fact that it is a bed of moss means they are in perpetual slumber. The only sound would not be screaming, but snoring.

Internally we pronounce it “See-ya-moth”, and since washingtonians speak perfect english as we remind our british design director Chris Whiteside daily, that’s clearly the only correct way to say it, so there ya go.

Speaking as a California transplant, I have two counter arguments:

1) It is called soda, not pop.
2) Bag and beg do not sound the same.

Nice try, though.

Actually it’s called Coke. Every regular soda is called coke in Georgia for obvious reasons

It’s like this in TN, too.

“Hey, hon. Watcha havin’?”
“A burger and a Coke, please.”
“What kinda Coke?”
“….um, a Coke coke?”
“Comin’ right up!”

I try hard not to giggle, but I always look wide-eyed at the spousal unit.

It would go a long way towards removing the sour taste from folks’ mouth if they were to give a ticket to the peeps who spent over a hundred bucks on the store. Just a suggestion in the nature of “fair play” and customer retention. Yes, they did say it was rare. Yes, it was those players’ faults for gambling. No, this is not treating those players with respect.

In my own subjective, non-key buying opinion. I don’t mess with RNG. I find it very unpalatable that people are spending 300 bucks on stuff and not getting what they were seeking. If I’m not careful, I will get angry. But they WERE warned. Ugh, I don’t even like acknowledging that. It’s still wrong, in my own trivial little opinion.

Addendum: I think the money part of it is very quantifiable. People are probably very happy with the profit. I was just curious, so I called home and explained the situation to my wife (who doesn’t and never will play an MMO and is generally clueless): people warned very clearly, spent X anyways, no tickets. Her reaction: “Dude, that is just wrong of them.” If I have to go through gymnastics of justification to explain why it’s NOT wrong, there’s.. uh, something wrong. Again, my opinion, but this fails the “evil” test and you missed it.

Let me just say, it pays to pay attention to gw2lfg posts, and I can’t be anymore clear.
We ( my guild ) posted on lfg, that those who join WILL be kicked AT THE END of the instance.

Upon arriving inside, we asked if they read the lfg post. They said “yes” it was a guardian and thief.

NEAR THE END, they were kicked, and they kept whispering us why they were kicked out.

Note the bolded parts. Kicked at the end? That’s fine. Boss and rewards come before the end.

Near the end, before the boss and rewards? That’s different. Very, very different. It’s the difference between getting your paycheck when they’re done filling it out, and getting it when they’re NEARLY done filling it out, say while it’s still unsigned/unauthorized.

And no this isn’t trolling, the entire point of this “experiment” was to test whether not people actually read or not.

I’m sorry, but the only thing you’ve proved is that you need to improve your communication skills. If you want to try this again, spell out that you will kick them BEFORE the end.

(That having been said, I really hope you don’t do this again. Experiment or not, warned or not, it’s still a bad thing to do to people.)

The dialogue... oh lord, the dialogue...

in Personal Story

Posted by: LowestTruth.2635

LowestTruth.2635

I just started playing GW2 in the last month or so, late to the party.

I am impressed with GW2 as a whole. I like the dynamics, the setup, the environment, the professions, the TP, basically the whole thing. I’ve played almost every MMO since Ultima Online, and this is my favorite one so far. That makes this next part frustrating.

I tried many different combinations of professions, races, and storylines to find one that “fit” into the world. I’d make a character, dream up a personality, and immediately get it squashed by the first cut-scene and delete it, because I knew it’d be that jarring from that point forward.

I have four or five very bland humans that are generic enough to make me avoid aggravation during the personal stories. I feel pigeon-holed into one personality and in some cases, one or two appearances. Wow, it should not be like that at all.

My opinion is that it’s too much effort, honestly, to go back and revoice/change it up/expand on the cutscenes. What I would like is simply more choices. A choice to turn off the VA/cutscenes and read text (text bubbles in the world if you’re feeling particularly generous, but even the story log would be fine). A choice to avoid the personal story entirely at the least — I want to choose to hide the green text if I’m not going to do it because I feel frustratingly forced into it. Then I could have a bland character to go through the story, and a unique and lively character with whom I could pretend it doesn’t exist. Hard to do when you can’t customize the UI.

I’ll keep playing the game, I dig it overall. I’m just a little annoyed that I feel like the driver of a robot instead of stepping into my character’s shoes.

Black Lion Chest Discussion

Lots of games have successfully made money from selling items in there stores.

Blizzard made 2mill in 4 hours off the celestial steed.

What does that say? Provide things people actually want instead of this horrible mechanic and you will make money. I’m just not seeing the logic here.

Halloween did this. Sucked.

Wintersday sold in game weapon skins. Crappy ones as far as I’m concerned. Probably didn’t sell well.

Now we are back to the RNG chest. Here’s an idea for you Anet. Sell a good weapon skin in the store and see how much you make. I’d be surprised if it made less than the keys.

Absolutely this.

I dropped $25 in a heartbeat for the steed.

I dropped and will drop $0 for RNG.

I bought gems for a character slot and some town clothes. Guaranteed purchase.

I’d pay money for weapon skins, town outfits (even the NPC ones that were supposed to be on a vendor), luxuries, etc, etc. Guaranteed income. But for a random chance at something? No way.

That said, I am mostly convinced that it’s being driven by the monetizers, not ANet. I just don’t see it being their decision, going by their history as a studio. I would imagine lots of them are just as frustrated as the players.

“We have cool weapon skins! Can we put them in the store?”
“Sure, let’s put them in the st—-…. crap, publisher is insisting we put them in the chests so people buy more keys.”
“Cripes, people are going to hate that. Can we at least make it a coupon so people can pick the weapon if they get it?”
“….yeah, they agreed to that. At least we can sneak something in.”

That is my rose-colored theory and I am sticking to it.

I mean, not to set expectations too high. That’s just my experience during primetime, for the most part, and I run around IC emoting and talking to NPCs, so.

TC is my home server; take a stroll around Divinity’s Reach and gawk at the amount of RP going on from every corner.

Aside from the teeth-grinding people using would in every emote instead of just doing it, it’s quite inspiring.

I stumbled onto this thread whilst doing a search in order to answer a similar question I had. I started an Asura last night and, like you, am a completionist and wiki’d the Soran events.

I almost gave up on the level 2 events and finally saw the Grumm-golem thing. I had time to read six comic books hanging around waiting for that one. Never saw the thief one. Spent a good amount of time around Keela without seeing that one either. Plenty of folks running about, so I assume it would have triggered.

At any rate, thanks for creating the original thread. Answers some questions I had posed in the Asura forum about the starting area events.
