Personally allowing easy(ish) access to full exotics to most players is a perfect system,
Allowing players to heavliy out stat each other would destroy WvW and the way mobs work in zones and discourage skilled players who simply dont have the time,

Might not have been your intention, but this sounds like the special Olympics or a peewee baseball game. It screams “lets celebrate mediocrity.” Its a socialist system at best. Lets give everyone a medal for just showing up. There is no opportunity for skilled players to stand out and above those that are not.

It could be argued that cosmetics are that gold medal to strive for, but why not better gear? Why is it ok to grind for cosmetics but not upgrades? From my perspective, people that use this argument are giving a skewed opinion due to their lack of play time to compete with those who do have more play time.

Basically, enough of the playerbase is fine with the current system of rewards.

Not singling you out or anything, however it does irk me a bit when people make blanket generalizations and speak for other people. Only a small percentage of a player base will visit a games forums. Even fewer players will actually contribute by posting.

That being said……. would you mind citing where you are finding data for this demographic? Perhaps there is someone compiling this data and I havent heard about it. My guess is that its your opinion and frankly I am not interested in blanket statements based on opinion.

Athem+ Lysidian lets have a inteligence constructive talk
Lets say u have 2 games
In the first game u cant do raids with the green quest-items
In the second game (it dont have raids) , u dont have to have epiqs to do any kind of PvE
Which 2 games <<force>> u to <<grind>> ?
And which 1 have <<optional grind>> (if u like u do it -without loosing anything) ?

Edit: any1 seen the difference or i am the only ape-monkey with +1 intellect buff ? :P

I think you are misunderstanding my gripes. My beef isnt with the grind, my issue is with being told by ANET and other players that there is no grind in the game, that players shouldnt be grinding anything, and that the game isnt about character progression. When in reality the current design promotes and encourages grinding and farming THEN BAMMMM……… you cant grind anymore.

Want to run dungeons for token gear….. no you cant do that here is your reward cap enjoy.

Want to kill monsters for loot / income….. no you cant do that here is your anti farming script, dont choke on it.

Want to buy boosters off the cash shop…. no ANET will sure as hell take your money and then slap you with the farming script, smile its for your own good.

Want to run DEs for karma….. no you cant do that here is your diminishing returns, hope you didnt enjoy one of ANETs primary selling features.

Want to do WvWvW for tokens……no you cant do that here is your diminishing returns.

…………………..want to play how you want to (within reason)……….nope ANET is busy pissing on our heads. Some people just arent smart enough to figure out that its not raining.

It’s funny reading how the people in this post say the game is dying, it’ll be dead in a month, everyone in my guild is gone, yet every server earlier today was either high or full.

Please, “quit” and enjoy your time elsewhere. It’ll leave this game cleansed from the stench you people bring to it.

Very productive and contributes greatly to the topic. Way to cite 1 or 2 posts and make such a generalization followed by an inappropriate blanket statement. Very mature and intelligent.

1) The forums will always be the forums. Fanbois and blind white knights defendingkitten causeskitten me off and are no better or worse than trolls.

2) Have played a total of about 10 mins total in the last 3 days. The anti farm script, DR on DEs, dungeon caps, and Fort Alpine have completely killed any motivation, interest, long term goals, and fun that I had for the game. Gonna keep plucking around the forums until the next patch (monday) to see if things change for the better before giving the finger and moving on for a while.

Anti-Grind Code and Game Design

Well thought out OP, and I appreciated the different perspective. It was fresh, informative and provided a viable solution. Although I disagree with your solution and here is why.

Sadly in games such as this where the mechanic of killing monsters, taking their stuff, and either using said stuff to profit / craft, is at least 50% of core game play, it would take a complete over haul of the game systems in place to make the anti farm script acceptable. In a game where 50% or more of the core mechanic revolves around killing monsters and gaining loot, it is asinine to punish players for doing just that.

Blame the farming bots not Anet. The anti-farming code is only here to stop bots from screwing up the economy. When the bots are gone the anti-farming code should follow or be made less severe.

Are you kitten serious? Is the MAN doubling your dose of fluoride laced water in your community? People who think like this infuriate me to no end. Lets punish the masses for the actions of the few, instead of not being lazy and implementing a VIABLE solution that actually SOLVES the problem.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Frequently_Asked_Questions

Isn’t ArenaNet going to ruin the game by making their game more like all the other MMORPGs?

No. ArenaNet has specifically said that they are not trying to make another World of Warcraft clone. Their core ideals of accessibility, playing how you want to play, the ability to play with your friends, and not having to wait until maximum level to ‘begin playing the game’ have been prominently mentioned in the press for the game. The game also does not use the conventional “Holy Trinity” system of DPS, healer, and tank, but instead uses a damage, control, and support system.

Thank you, come again.

But if you are going by the manifesto video….. everything should be fun and exciting instead of the “boring grind of other MMOs.” Either way you swing the sword they lied / failed to deliver / over sold themselves.

As for grinding, no one likes to grind all the time (i mean, i shouldnt say no one, i guess some do, but grinding isnt really fun in itself.) Like the above player, i do enjoy a little grinding, but it shouldn’t even come close to being the thing i spend most of my time doing in a video game. I already have a job.

As for Colin, yes, ANet made a game that lets you play the way you want to. You can grind if you want to. Go ahead. No one is stopping you. I think the overall goal, however, is to remove that part of the game where the players whose actual circumstances allow them to grind all day long get a noticeable financial advantage for doing it.

Anti farm script stops players from grinding. I run into it routinely in 15 -30mins of playing. So no, I cant grind if I want to and yes ANET is stopping me. So…… based on the manifesto I should be able to get what I want in a fun and exciting way. What are my options? DEs? Welcome to DRs and essentially “grinding” DEs. WvWvW? Welcome to teleports, transfer spies, and typically one server completely dominating the maps to the point of camping outside the spawn areas to get their tokens. Dungeons? Wasnt there a cap on rewards just put in? Guess thats out. Just buy the crap off the TP? Hmmm if you dont buy gems > convert to gold > profit…… then how do you make money? You could play the TP mini game and flip items….. but wait ANET doesnt want us standing there doing the same thing over and over again.

See where this is going….. at this rate most of us got sold a lemon. So much for playing how we wanted to right.

edit
In hindsight its pretty kittenkitten to build a game where atleast 50% of it is based on killing monsters and taking their stuff, and then punishing players for …… killing monsters and taking their stuff.

Colin Johanson (game designer) clearly states ANET/ NCsoft does not want players grinding. Thank you Colin Johanson, for selling me a game that allows me to play how I want to, and then not allowing me to play how I want to. Would you like to comment on that Mr. Colin Johanson? Perhaps you could explain how players can make gold or construct a legendary 100% grind free?

Thank you for the citation Jezath. Looks like I will be shifting my beef with not being able to grind into the issue of not being able to earn gold or items in a constant fun and exciting manner.

ANet wants to remove the boring grind from the game, so whenever it feels like you’re grinding and doing something over and over because you think it will serve some purpose….stop! Do something else, have fun, and you will be rewarded.

Please cite your source for this. I keep seeing people trying to cram this kitten down our throats and I am not buying it until I see a source from ANET specifically saying this.

So many of these posts. imo the mods need to consolidate them all.

On topic, and completely 100% “imo”:

—I hope they keep aggressive anti-farming code in the system. I don’t think removing/reducing this is the answer.

—I hope they make the rewards for playing in ALL zones equivalent to those in Orr.

—I want to see an even distribution of players of all levels throughout all zones (obviously following the current appropriate zone level requirements).

—I love many of the zones and don’t want to have to basically live in Orr to interact with the general player base.

—With this said, it will require a lot of retraining of the playerbase to help them understand that they are not required to stay in top level zones to “grind” or “farm” or play the game. So, it goes back to ANet to really communicate this to people.

—DEs in low level zones give ~100 less karma per gold. And, imo, an “ok” tradeoff for being able to play in any zone I choose. But that’s just me and I know a lot of people will be put off with the ~100 less.

Just my $.02!

Your view is in direct conflict with the core ideal and selling point of GW2.

" Isn’t ArenaNet going to ruin the game by making their game more like all the other MMORPGs?

No. ArenaNet has specifically said that they are not trying to make another World of Warcraft clone. No offense but I really hope your suggestions are ignored. I dont want to be told I have to play a certain way or get punished.

In my particular case / experience my game play has been reduced to playing in 30min intervals with roughly a hour cool down period. So play 30mins, hit DR, go watch TV for a hour, play 30 mins, hit DR, pvp for a hour, play for 30 mins, do jumping challenge for a hour, play 30 mins, think why the hell am I putting up with this, log off for the day and hope something changes.

I have tolerated this for days, I am tired of it, enough is enough. So here I am on the forums looking for info and expressing my discontent.

My experience just in both general playing and actively farming, has been to see a noticable loot drop off after roughly 30 mins. Although that could be due to playing a glass cannon thief and average killing a mob in less than 3-4 secs. However this timer seems to be as low as 15 mins or so on the defend DEs in Cursed Shore, if I am spamming explosive arrow to tag a many mobs as possible, (often 8-12 mobs per wave).

Seems a DR on DE’s and anti farm script were stealth implemented at the same time as the dungeon cap. Or that the admitted bug with the dungeon cap is affecting farming and DEs.

Or at least a time frame in which the DR issue on loot, DEs and dungeon caps will be resolved? It is an admitted bug and although it effects people differently, has been game breaking in my case the last couple of days. I know I am not the only one negatively affected by this. Being able to only play for 30mins before I start to see reductions in loot/karma/rewards is not my idea of fun nor is it a reasonable expectation of game play experience.

A red post addressing this issue would be greatly appreciated. I am sure the community would love to have more clarification, acknowledgement, transparency and timeline in regards to the anti farm script / diminishing returns on dynamic events, and the cap on dungeon rewards.

Thanks in advance.

You’re far from alone on that one. I feel the same, and have read plenty of comments stating the same.

Of all the changes that have been made to all the MMOs I’ve ever played, it’s this one alone that has actually made me reconsider playing at all.

You don’t design a game around grinding, then make grinding against the rules.

There’s a bug with anti-farming measures that is making a fair number of players take a break from the game. Hopefully things will revive if arena.net fixes things.

As Despair said, many like myself do not see GW2 as time well spent while the anti farm/ Event diminishing returns/ dungeon cap, are working in their current state. Bugged or working as intended, bots / gold spammers running unchecked, and cheaters in WvWvW. Until ANET gets things under control and returns some incentive to play for longer than 30mins at a time, I am afraid the active population will continue to plummet.

And if some of us enjoy going out and gathering our own mats?

So basicly if I go out and actively hunt the mobs to get the items I want then I am farming or grinding and effectively as you put it circumventing game play, my only other option is to …. buy them. So yes, I could buy/trade for what I wanted assuming I didnt get it during my first play though.

I do not see how actively seeking out the source of needed materials and actively collecting those materials is now considered a “requirement that only exists in my mind” If I didnt get them or enough of them in just playing, and I want them to make something, options are pretty much limited on the means to obtain them. To imply that “farming” them is sabotaging my long term enjoyment is a bit of a reach.

Perhaps our views are so far apart, I think we are just going to have to agree to disagree. Doesnt mean either is right or wrong, different strokes, different folks.

How am I supposed to play this game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lysidian.4653

Nope, I’m discussing exactly the same thing. The issue here is in our different perspectives on what constitutes playing the game in a legitimate way. The dungeon caps were put in place to keep people from speed clearing a single, easier path in a dungeon many times in order to quickly farm rewards. This was an illegitimate way to play, according to ArenaNet…obviously, since they changed it.

The diminishing returns discussion is devoid of complete facts or even basic information. People are providing anecdotal evidence of their own experiences, and I would venture to say that there is a lot of speculation, exaggeration, and overraction going on. Other than the diminishing returns they’ve talked about implementing in dungeons (which they have said are not working as intended and going to be fixed), we don’t have any confirmation from the devs that a diminishing returns system is in place anywhere else. For every example someone has provided on these boards to show they got diminishing returns, there is another example of someone who continued to get full rewards. So…all we can say about that at this point is that we really don’t know. My guess is that there is a bug that is affecting some people’s rewards from certain things…and if it is a bug, I’m sure reporting it with maximum details and specificity to the devs is the best way to clear it up (as opposed to inflamed discussions of some sort of great conspiracy).

Some folks obvious feel that farming (doing the same thing over and over as fast as possible for hours) is a legit way to play. I would venture to say, based on ArenaNet’s actions with dungeons, that they do not agree. For my part, I agree with ArenaNet…I don’t think farming is a legit way to play. I think it’s a loophole that has existed for a long time in MMORPGs which allows people to min/max the most efficient single activity in a given game in order to shortcut through…that is what I was posting about above.

Ok. I am having a hard time grasping your view point. Taking your last paragraph, and farming being a loop hole or shortcut…. lets say I need to farm T6 blood. So I know the trolls in Frostgorge have a chance to drop Vial of Powerful Blood. Lets say I need 30, which is about what it takes to make 2 exotic berserker daggers. So if by your point of view, going out and killing poor trolls for a few hours to get the 30 Vials of Powerful Blood is a shortcut or loophole….. pray tell how does one go about accomplishing this task and not fall into your view of a shortcut or loophole?

Lysidian.4653

Leveling speed has nothing to do with it.

We’re talking about people who are complaining because the game doesn’t provide them with optimal rewards when they use loopholes (grinding certain mobs or farming certain areas) to shortcut their rewards and completion of the game. Rather than actually play, they want to be able to jump up and down in place a million times super fast and “win”. They even go so far as to say that they don’t even KNOW what actually playing an MMORPG is or looks like. They are annoyed because ArenaNet has put systems in place which cause the game to be most efficient when you DON’T try to game the system. I think it’s a great thing. This game provides the smoothest, most efficient path when you wander and enjoy the variety available. It’s so refreshing.

Again, I could care less how fast people play…that has nothing to do with it. If you are playing the game as intended and you have 10 hours a day to explore and enjoy the content…you’re going to get to max much quicker than I am, and that’s totally cool. If you have 1 hour a night, and feel like you should be entitled to gain all the rewards the game offers in a couple weeks and get mad when ArenaNet closes exploits and loopholes…that’s not okay.

I think you are attempting to discuss something along a different track. In this thread most of us are discussing the limitations being placed on legitimate players playing the game in a legitimate way. Such as the dungeon caps, diminishing returns on DEs and the anti farm script.

I do not honestly believe there is anyone in this thread advocating on behalf of people that want the easy street or fast track. However there are many valid concerns over the restrictions having been placed on what is considered legitimate game play in order to combat exploiters and bots.

Different strokes for different folks. Just because you do not like/want to “grind” on mobs for mats does not mean that those who do should be discouraged or penalized. Their game play is no more or less legitimate than yours.

I did read it. I came up on this part:

Now throw in the diminishing returns

And knew you were talking about same-event farming, because that doesn’t happen to people that do different DE’s as they play the game. So yes, I’m correct; you’re complaining that ArenaNet turned off a low-risk/low-effort, high reward karma fountain. Spread out, do different events, find different things to do instead of sitting in one spot doing the same event over and over, and those diminishing returns will disappear.

Not at all. I typically start with the escort to penetant, defend, move to the next outpost, defend, move to the next and defend, defend melandru, go do grenth or arah if they are active. By the time I am halfway through with the second defend, the loot has already dropped off. Only takes one more DE of anything after the second defend and the karma is dropping off. Bad design or combating bots. Take your pick. But thats just my experience.

If you are bored with PvE and what it’s giving you as reward – why not try WvW.

Who is bored with PvE?

Personally I spend a fair amount of time doing WvW. Curse Fort Alpine and their oceanic players.

I agree with the dungeon changes and any changes that fix EASY ways to gain. The whole shard run instance shortcutting thing is cheese. Nobody needs armor skins or legendaries – they should be earned, and not in the first week the game is out.

But, screwing over people who are actually spending TIME playing is lame. There’s a difference between trying to screw over and shortcut the game and actually playing the game. A person out gathering or slaughtering mobs to try to get mats isn’t shortcutting anything. People running events in zones that ONLY HAVE EVENTS … how can they be shortcutting?

Plus, there are bots everywhere that aren’t getting dealt with, so adding lame ways to deal with some types of bots that screw over players isn’t a great solution.

It seems really whacked to reduce rewards in the orr zones for people repeating events. Events are the only thing going on in those zones. This is the dumbest thing I’ve heard of.

I do think the whole zerg thing is cheesey and lame but reducing the rewards isn’t the answer, properly scaling encounters so that zergs can’t obliterate champs in 30 seconds without anyone getting downed is the answer. Make those champs something more than tank and spanks. The reason people do a circuit of 5 events is because they’re stupid easy.

Crafting in this game can take stupid amounts of blue poo (as I call it, the rare stuff) and if players want to obtain that stuff themselves they shouldn’t be punished for spending time doing that.

There’s a difference between a player doing that type of farming manually, actually playing the game, for a few hours here and there, and a bot that’s doing it 24/7 for days on end via scripting. Surely you have data logs and metrics whereby bot behavior is insanely obvious. I’m sure I could write code that could isolate bots based on data and behavior. No players go login every x minutes (when nodes repop) 24/7 every day. No players stay logged in at the same spot 24/7 killing the same mob nonstop. C’mon.

You expect players to try to take the easy way out of everything. I expect ANet to put a little more effort into bot control and handling the economy without sucking ALL fun out of the game.

Well stated view : ) I agree.

The only reason people are complaining is because ANet basically turned off free karma fountains. That really is what it boiled down to.

Credible until this part, if you are not going to bother reading the thread, why post?

That’s a lot of generalizations on things that you can’t possibly know.

now, it’s actually quite easy to figure out when you claim you haven’t encountered the DR system yet.

I said it hasn’t affected me, that’s not the same as I have not encountered it. The difference is that I just don’t care all that much. I make my gold by other means and fill my time with activities that don’t involve farming for inordinate amounts of time. Leveling alts, hopping between dragon spawns, playing the trading post etc.

Just curious, not attacking you or anything, but why is your play time choices ok, and mine are not?

What would be the alternative though? Everyone wants their cake and to eat it too here. Without really considering the alternative. Had they done nothing about the exploitation of resources in this game. I’m of a mind that this is a temporary thing anyway. Until a more elegant solution can be derived. But I can’t say it’s ever really impacted me any. I guess we play this game very differently. Which is why I get upset when people start using words like “everyone,” not you specifically. But really, in this case ANet couldn’t win, but at least this solution has less long term issues, if it does prove to be temporary as I believe it to be.

Active policing for Bots, shoring up the code to prevent and detect bots/spammers/cheaters, better account security features (authenticators? randomized key pad codes? IP locking / confirmations). There are SOOOOOO many other ways to deal with this situation. Sticking it to the paying customer because of a lazy bandaid fix is a BS move, but they already got our money so no lost sleep on ANET’s part right?

This is not likely to be temporary, as very similar systems exist to this day in GW1. From Anet’s perspective, I imagine this was a cheap and proven option for them considering the alternatives. Unforunately they have our money and unless the population rises up, its unlikely to change or change by much. But thats just my take on it.

See why’d you have to go and ruin a perfectly reasonable post with “fanboying.” That being said, completing a legendary isn’t meant to be a matter of a few weeks. It’s meant to be completed over months. If gating players via Karma accomplishes that, does that not preserve the “sanctity” of owning a legendary in the long run?

Its a generalization, don’t take it personally.

Even without the scripts and diminishing returns, even playing balls to the wall 10+ hours a day, knowing where to go and what to do, its still gonna take months to make a legendary. My gripe is not with how long or how much effort it takes to accomplish a legendary.

My beef is with effort = reward.

Right now its “more effort = less reward”

Though I just vastly simplified the problem, the scripts and diminishing returns are intended to combat botting. However they are having a very negative impact on legitimate players game experiences. In my particular case and experience, I cant play for more than 30mins before I start to get penalized for playing. I have tried various remedies including but not limited to changing spots, maps, mob types, activities, tactics, and characters.

Should I be penalized because I am fast, effective, or efficient at killing mobs/participating in DEs/completing dungeons?

All for the supposed sake of combating Bots/gold farmers/exploiters…?

Once I get hit with the script/diminishing returns why should I have to stop playing because further effort rewards nothing? Just what am I supposed to do if I cant play how I wanted to or planned to (legitimately)? Why should I be pigeon holed into doing something I dont wanna do? Why cant I play my way, on my time? Why can I only play 30mins before Anet effectively takes away any incentive to continue to play for at least the next 45mins? Why am I being penalized for the actions of others (bots)?

Until someone receiving a pay check from ANET can answer those questions, I am going to continue to rage over this issue.

If you’re moving around as much as you say you are you shouldn’t be affected by the imposed limitations to begin with, exception is maybe the DE cap. But how much karma do you really need to accumulate in a day to make yourself happy?

I personally need over 550,000karma just for the obsidian shards I need for just one aspect of the legendary I am working towards. At roughly 379karma per DE….. thats 1452 DEs needed. Now throw in the diminishing returns, remind me again why I am getting diminishing returns when I need such an obscene number of events just for ONE ingame goal? Even if I managed to do 100 DEs a day, it will still take me 14.52 days just to accomplish that one goal, to make one item, which is only one step of many to complete a legendary.

Its asinine, period, the end, there is no argument for it, no amount of fanboying can defend the decision to limit game play.

AGAIN, THE ONLY WAY THEY WILL EVER GO AWAY IS IF PEOPLE STOP BUYING THE GOLD FROM THEM!

And no it was not Yak’s bend…it was something with Wood in the name.

Not the only way,

a list of IP locations, a strike team equipped with castration tools and diplomatic immunity is a sure fire way to stop it.
