That’s just so… so… Fetch
MFoy, we have to talk to you. You’re wearing sweatpants. It’s Saturday.
But, but… I thought we all agreed “Fetch” was the new Meta!?!
And they’re grey pajama bottoms but I forgive you… you don’t even have to ask.
That’s just so… so… Fetch
Ya know, if this thread gets enough replies not saying META will become…The new Meta
No Diggity
Wow, some of you “It’s an MMO stoopid!” sound like a bunch of self-righteous prigs.
I agree with the OP.
So, how does letting me solo something detract from your fun?
btw that’s rhetorical…
Tal San… Not just lovely but she looks like she’s here to kill all the Evil Red Lettered ones.
It’s because there are two main ways to view your characters:
o As an extension of yourself in the game world
o As a companion to you
These different views result in different but valid, fun choices. For once everybody on the forum is right. Must be a first.
Well, I thought it was funny for about the first 15 mins or so. Then, it started to give me a headache until I read about the “Post Processing” switch gets out of the fuzzy Sepia tone stuff. Still, logged out early last night wishing they had built in an Off Switch.
Personally, I would have built in a timer with a random number of minutes between 1 – 10 after which things would return to normal. That would have been a better gag.
The best April Fools gag I’ve ever had pulled on me was when I logged into my account at work and “Account Suspended” messages started to pop up. Then my session was killed. When I logged back in everything was normal. Great gag….
… Cuz it knew when to stop.
Great idea. Should have a minimum effect on the legit players while slowing down or even stopping the Gold Sellers.
Works all around.
Wow Pax, really nice Image Quality and FPS for that resolution. Two 780’s in SLI?!? whadda monster. I did notice from your settings that I missed the Supersample option added a long time ago. Even on “Override” it has a minor effect on the quality. Geez, now ya got me messing with my settings again. Here’s a sample to show you what I’m getting with my 1920 monitor. I will add, the game is stellar at supporting all this pixel polishing. Once again, kudo’s to the Art Group.
Oh, and for the record, every system has a bottleneck. No matter what you run there is always a slowest component rather it’s a car or computer. I will say the one time I upgraded just the CPU on a rig I was really unhappy with the results. What I’ve noticed is it’s the memory bus speed that really makes an upgrade worth it. So, that’s CPU, MoBo (Yeah, Always ASUS) and RAM. Those seem to last me about 5 years while I upgrade the graphics card every 3 years or so. At some point I always gotta say “uh… ok, this makes me happy.”
For now.

Sounds like a pretty smart group here that agrees on lots of this stuff. Good deal. At some point I always have problems seeing much difference in the image quality with so many permutations to choose from.
K, here’s my in-game settings to complete the circle. Note, even though I’m using “Override” in the drivers I have to turn FXAA on to get any AA. I’d guess it has something to do with the code passing along the AA data. However, never turn FXAA on at the driver level since it kills the FPS and image quality.
Anyone see anything they’d tweak?
Any comments from the smart kids at ArenaNet? Yeah, I know this config isn’t officially supported and limited liability is a concept I fully support in matters like these.
I’m using an Nvidia GTX 760 and yes, it makes a huge difference in my FPS. Mine is around 70+ just running around. The two things to consider are:
o You must have a 256 bit memory bus (Memory Bandwidth) if you want the eye candy. Many good GPU’s get bottle-necked by a 128 bit bus.
o Turn V-Sync OFF. If you leave it on you’ll be limited to 60 FPS because of the common 60 Hz refresh rate.
Here’s a shot of some of my settings. Note “Override” is on. Stock drivers w/o SweetFX.
Oh, and I’m using an i5 2500K CPU Stock Speeds. Never thought of the game as “CPU Bound” as many seem to. I suspect it’s a configuration issue not a Hardware issue for some players.

Hands down, this wins for the “Dumbest Thread of the Year”
…and it’s only March?!?
Just a guess… but I’m pretty sure we’ll still be here when it comes out.

Thanks for the heads up Gaile. It’s always better to be a little late than busted. No Big.
Enjoy your time abroad. We’ll keep the home fires burning…
This is kinda one of those illusion pictures… Just stare at it and you’ll see the image of a Black Cat appear. Smarter folks seem to see the image quicker.
Ya know, just reading these posts I’ve made a few observations:
o Every post has something that makes me go “Me too! Me too!”
o I’m super happy to see so many replies from around the World. Tyria has many Heroes.
o Special shout out to the ArenaNet Posters. Thank you for taking the time to show us you are good people who are kind to animals.
o JustTrogdor: Absolutely brilliant. Much applause for starting the ball rolling.
Ah… Hmm… OK then.
o I’m older than I act (But then I’d almost have to be)
o My degree is in Computer Science and I’ve done almost every job in IT as I moved up the ranks to manager.
o I helped over a dozen folks advance at work by giving them half a chance.
o I’m a published author.
o I play guitar and have survived many public performances.
o Bob is not my Uncle.
o I edit my posts without describing the changes.
o I can’t spell fur beans.
o I get lost easily.
o I tend to only post once per thread.
o My favorite phrase is “It’s settled.”
o I’ve attained the honor roll, got expelled and stayed up waaay past my bedtime.
o I recently adopted two rescue cats – Buster, a brown tabby and Lucy an all black cat.

I play in Cursed Shore a lot as a solo player and I’ve been subject to the same behavior the OP describes. God forbid you should start something “out of order” as defined by someone with a colored tag. However…
There is a reason the game lets anyone start an event like Plinx or rez Izzy to re-start Mel.
I used to argue “We have more than enough players to run two events.” Now I just block as those players never have anything useful to hear anyway. Block is a wonderful tool.
Meanwhile, just announce the event and many non-zerg players will show up to have fun too.
As for all those little tin commanders who think they own the Map: Farming efficiency is the hobgoblin of little minds.
I guess because I’ve played so long I’ve learned a very hard and fast rule from the early days: If yur dead, wp and run back. Especially in Cursed Shore events because:
o I can wp and run faster. I even send out a msg in mapchat so the rezzer knows what happened and perhaps encourage others.
o Rezzing takes two players out of action.
o You get more lootz that way. Since you’re still playing rather than laying there.
o Your lootz are still there even if the event ends.
o I’d even vote to add a “Just Kill Me” button to downed options.
o Players who yell “help” annoy me to no end.
I got so whack on the topic I even looked it up on the forums a loooooong time ago. “Rez the downed. Dead wp and run.” was considered proper etiquette at the time. Times change I guess. It has been interesting to watch etiquette, slang, etc. shift over the life of the game. I wonder why that happens?
It does remind me “Humans are not a rational animal, they are a rationalizing animal.”
For me, an Adventure makes me think of:
o Solo or Group play
o Lost treasure, Hidden bandits, kidnapped Princess, etc
o “It was a dark and stormy night…”
o Cut Throat party of NPC’s – Trust No One
o Secret doors in the Crypt
o “Second star on the right. Straight on ’till morning”
OK, ok I’ve given this some thought and come to these conclusions:
o This is very complex for AreaNet. Mike, Colin et al have to deal with NCSoft, Nexon, KongZhong and Internal Staff. Actually, so far so good.
o This is kinda new but not Evil. So stay frosty.
o There is another NCSoft published game that needs attention before Guild Wars 2.
o Any impact to Guild Wars 2 would be downstream.
o Considering SAB on a mobile platform is a healthy discussion.
Honestly, from what I’ve read players are already making a lot of stew from one Oyster. I’ve looked outside, the sky is not falling. I’d like us to calmly take a step back and consider a graphic that clearly shows the whole issue as it currently stands.
Well, it’s 3,939 hours and 0 Pre drops. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever had a drop worth over 30g.
But…
I have my main and two alts tricked out with exotic gear, way cool looks and more than enough gold to play. As I said in another thread: “Just play the game and have fun.”
… and I have.
I’ve run a Ranger main Longbow/Sword+Torch since Pre and I gotta tell ya… Sword Auto Attack works fine as it is. Try thinking of all 3 skills as part of a set that work together. Yeah, I had to mess around a bit until it dawned on me that sword #2 starts with a jump back (Dodges) for a reason. Likewise, #3 is a “Closer”.
Nowadays I can switch between Longbow and Sword+Torch with ease.
Please don’t change it… the combo is totally Killer.
The best advice I give new players is: “Just play the game and have fun.”
Honestly, every problem you’ll encounter will be solved. From Loot to Vistas to Builds…
Just play the game and have fun.
But we wants it. We wants the preciousss…
And as we sink into the Toxic Ooze that are the Forums we’d like to thank you for tuning in to another episode of “As the Disk Drive Turns”
Remember, no matter where you go… There you are.

Geez Jaymee if you think there would ever be a thread immune to the “Lord of the Flies” effect this should be the one. Dang.
While I’m gonna guess the condescending hoseheads think they are trying to help in some Meta way… They aren’t.
Remember, there are some people you cannot teach but you can let them learn. Or you could do what I try to do… File it under chickenkitten and forget it. A good life lesson regardless.
In an effort to turn the thread back to something more pleasant… I like pets Jaymee, how about you? I’ve been a huge Cat fan all my life. Cats are great. I understand some people like Dogs too.
Hey Jaymee, nice to meet ya!
Yes, playing is much better than sitting passively watching TV. You are actively doing something. I believe the GW nurtures many skills and accomplishments that are important in Real Life. Crafting, Trading Post games, Leadership and generally learning how to be successful. The journey is the reward.
I play a lot and what I like best is that the Bad Guys are clearly labeled.
Personally I plan to buy with cash. It doesn’t hurt to show some support for the home team. Compared to the other games (you know all the names) I’ve taken a look at, Guild Wars 2 is still one heck of a value.
You bet! With Real World Cash on the first day of Pre.
What wonderful news! So so psyched for HoT I don’t even have to hear the details Gaile. Ready, willing and able to pre-order right now.
Mike, Colin – Nice job, you swung for the fences and hit it out into the parking lot.
Absolutely brilliant. Much applause to all!
Smile and be as happy as I can…
OK, after the first month of The New I’ve got to say I don’t… entirely… hate them. In fact, I love the “send you all over the known world” parts just to remember the wonderful Art and Music in the game. I’ve had a number of “Oh, wow! I remember this Map. It was so much fun!” moments.
Even tried a few new things.
After all the QQing I made over the change I smell a large serving of Crow headed my way.
(edited by MFoy.3284)
Gaile, I don’t really need a ticket but I’d like to wish Mike and Colin all the best in whatever they are going to present. Swing for the fence guys… It’s better to be hung as a horse thief than for stealing chickens.
“I’m sure I don’t know. Luck favors the prepared Darling.” E. Mode
Mike, Colin – Whatever you have planned for the 24th I truly hope it succeeds beyond your wildest dreams.
Let’s all take a knee – Hear us O Game Gods. Hallowed be thy bandwidth. Release thy minions that we, in thy mercy, shall snuffith.
Now, go get ’em.
Break a leg guys…
(edited by MFoy.3284)
As someone who has managed Large Scale Applications across multiple time zones I’ll have to give Gaile and ArenaNet a big two thumbs up for the handling of the drops. Yes, it’s always Prime Time somewhere but at least we don’t get auto-kicked very often. Like maybe 3 – 4 times since pre.
Also, having support staff available is the top priority. As many pointed out we hit a speed bump today. Not that big a deal looking at the whole picture.
Moreover, the Server availability during these last two plus years is amazing. A truly great job especially compared to other (cough) Blizzard (cough) companies.
In all, a dang good job. Have one on me.
Just a guess but at this point you’re either On the Train or In front of the Train.
Smile and be as happy as you can…
To kill the Evil Red Lettered Ones of course.
What gets me is:
o They’re like 0 for 5 success rate on the “New, Exciting, Etc.”
o They’re 5 for 5 on kittening off the whole community with the “New, Exciting, Etc.”
o They had a great content delivery system in GW1 but refuse to use it.
o Calling something “An Expansion worth of Content” is an oxymoron. The only thing that’s an Expansion worth of Content… is an Expansion.
o It’s not like it’s only the Forum posters that notice.
So, it looks PAX South will turn out to be another “You don’t need a boxed expansion cuz <insert lame excuse> and we’re here to talk about the next Living Story! er… uh…Living WORLD!” Yeah, I saw the logo too. Sigh… how long are they gonna fiddle around with “New, Exciting, Etc.” until they realize “New, Exciting, Etc.” isn’t working. For a great example look at LS S1 – all that development money and it’s flushed down the drain. Never to be played again. Even worse, it broke Personal Story for new players.
Professional advice from a Systems Engineer: Stop trying to re-invent the wheel. “Back to the Basics” is your friend…
(edited by MFoy.3284)
" hear how we’re setting up a new framework for how an MMO can grow its universe."
Ruh Roh….
This is just a WAG but after 15 pages and no response from Anet I’d guess this horse is dead, canned and labeled.
Y’all feel free to continue to argue over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin but this is settled. Like it or Lump it. It’s not going to change for the better despite valid points being raised.
Moreover, given the many mis-steps in the last 6mos or so, NPE, Traits, Gem Exchange, No Expansions, TP UI, etc you better learn to like the new Anet if you want to keep on playing.
I’d still like to know what drives these changes? They sure don’t feel like anything designed for the NA/EU crowd. Nor do they feel like anything from Anet in the past. Still, smile and be as happy as you can.
As always, my Mother said to say I had a good time…
It seems that many of you folks are missing the point: We’re not angry about being “Forced” to do anything. The point all of us are kittened off over is that another part of the game we liked is gone. It’s not like this is the first time… NPE, Traits, Gem Exchange etc have all been rolled out with a “Like it or lump it” attitude. It’s only after we pound the table that there is the slightest acknowledgement from Anet that they may “not have considered all the impacts…”
Also, Yeah I get why many of you love the new “Do nothing and get rewards” aspect. There are always those who expect something for nothing… and now you have it.
Enjoy.
Wow, 11 pages and still no one from Anet commenting on this? What’s up with that? How is that better communication?
But mostly, I’d like to know where these weird changes come from? Is this type of treatment what we can expect for the future of the game? No expansions and poorly considered designs? Do you feel there might be a correlation between this handling of the Game and the steady fall off of players and revenue?
I do.
Well, after seeing two sets of the new dailies I gotta say they go outta their way to punish the PvE players. They were logging out in droves. Were you not killing the game fast enough before?
I also notice no Red Hat replies in this thread. C’mon, no Guts no Glory… oh wait… they took that outta the game too. NPE, Traits, Gem Exchange and now this… Exactly who green lights these changes? I’d agree that “This game is updated by unpaid interns, this is why each patch makes the game worse.” except it’s insulting to interns. If you keep pushing us out the door like this you’re gonna need a bigger door.
Man, talk about getting a lump of coal for Christmas. Looks like Anet bought the coal at the bulk rate.
Played every day since Pre and always did the dailies for fun. Now, that fun is gone…
It seems like the Fun Police are making sure to chase all the good stuff outta the game. “Play the way YOU want… as long as it’s the way WE want!”
If the content was any good Anet would not have to “force (‘stimulating’) players” into doing it.
Oh, and for the record there are only two options today that are PvE the rest are bullkitten.
Man, this sux. Like many have said “…PvE only” and the choices today are really really bad. Queensdale Event and Maguuma Forager are the only ones I’d consider PvE. While I like the differant locations the lack of a third PvE option is stoopid design.
“Play the way YOU want to play!” was the guiding light for the game and now it’s “Play stuff we have a hard time getting player counts up” ’cuz you know they look at metrics. What a swell way to skew the numbers.
Played every day since Pre and always did the dailies for fun. Now, that fun is gone…
Cantha by Christmas!
The deal for me is this constant misunderstanding I get from Anet when you folks say “It’s an expansion’s worth of content!” No, it’s not. Living Story and a Boxed Expansion are very different things. They are not two lines that will intersect down the road.
Living Story is often Playwalled off for me since I play the game solo. They are very channeled via Jumping Puzzles, Trick Fights, etc. Often this is just not that fun. Sorry to say but S2 is actually worse in that regard.
An Expansion is large enough I can run around and find fun stuff to do. And I get to pay you guys for your hard work. Colin, Peter, et al I’m getting very concerned that the game can’t be sustained via gem-store sales much longer.
So, for myself and many others the only thing that has an “expansion’s worth of content” is an Expansion.
