200 hours to reach level 80, are you kittening kidding me?
I bought the game, didn’t rush anything, did all dungeons, did all the jumping puzzles i could find, explored a lot, tried out spvp and WvW and was 80 on my 4th day of playing, the GW2 leveling process is realy realy fast. The hardcore players did it in 2 days after release. I would say that ~40-50 hours is a normal amount to reach 80.
I have a level 38 alt that has 56 hours of play time on it. I wouldn’t say that 40-50 hours is normal. Normal if you are going fast and missing things. But for those of us that like to take in the scenery, craft, gather materials for crafting etc, then 40-50 hours is very fast.
One way to counter gear progression while still offering progression is things like personal ELO, leaderboards, titles etc etc. I have no idea why these things aren’t already here really.
This gives people a sense of accomplishment, and competitive spirit without the need for a gear boost every few months with updates.
Exactly. There are plenty of ways to introduce progression. Unfortunately many of those ways are time consuming which also means more expensive.
Gear progression is the easiest and cheapest form of progression for developers. It’s why so many MMOs opt for this style when creating their game.
200 hours to get to 80? It only took me like 20 hours to get to 60
Well it took me 130 hours to get to 80, that was with maxing out crafting, doing some sPvP and some exploring along the way. I’m sure that there are many out there that were faster and some longer. I used 200 hours as a guide so that even if it took the OP that long, he would still have more than enough time to hit 80.
No expansion has been announced yet which means it is probably at least a year away, 6 months minimum.
It takes around 200 or so hours to reach max level so you should have plenty of time even if you don’t have a great deal of time to play.
Besides, we have no idea if the level cap will be increased in future. Guild Wars level cap was kept the same even when new expansions were released. The expansions added new gear and content rather than expanding the level cap.
It’s a gear step. A treadmill implies it’s continuous. No where have they stated they will be adding anything beyond Ascended gear. In fact they explicitly said they were not intending to keep adding better tiers of gear.
To repeat what others have been saying, please quote where did ANet says no more new tiers?
Until then, we can only stay pessimistic since the balls are in their court, not ours.
“We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.”
He is simply acknowledging that the games been out 3 months and they’ve added a new set to give people something extra to work towards.
He is also explicitly saying that they won’t continue to add sets.
You can read into the sentence at discover any hidden meanings you like, but taken at face value, it simply says they don’t intend to continue adding more tiers.
Maybe I’m just optimistic, who knows, time will tell, and your more than welcome to keep my posts in reserve and say “I told you so” if in 4 months they add another tier.
Until that point I won’t be reading between the lines to uncover apparent hidden truths behind a message.
His posts states that they will not be adding new tiers EVERY THREE MONTHS. That is ALL it says. Nowhere does it say that they will NEVER introduce another tier set.
He explicitly did NOT say that no more sets will be added, ever.
The last paragraph is relevant to the “problem” in that this game is new and the direction in which is headed isn’t set in stone. No one really wants to chase after stats every three months. Anet has stated that a treadmill is not their intention. We won’t know the difference until they actually do.
While it’s fine to protest the periodic addition of gear tiers to the game, it’s not acceptable to refuse an update that may or may not set a precedent for future updates. We simply do not have enough information to judge Anet one way or another at this point, and proof by intimidation is not proof at all.
They were advertising a cherry flavoured bar with no peanut content.
But after we ordered our cherry bars, what we end up getting are peanut bars. Some people really can’t take peanuts, you know. And in some countries / areas what they’ve done is not only of doubtful moral quality, it’s illegal.Yes they said the treadmill is not their intention, at the same time saying they will, with time, introduce more powerful items, just not every three months. Maybe every four or six. So yeah, they’ve already set a precedence for future gear updates.
They might want to name it whatever they want but it doesn’t change a single thing. No they haven’t.
not ever three months…
How long has Guild Wars 2 been out…3 months!
Now look back at the sentence. They are saying, yes the game has been out 3 months and we are adding a new tier of gear to bridge a gap we left in original release, that doesn’t mean in another 3 months or more we aren’t going to be adding new tiers of gear.
They are effectively acknowledging that the game’s been out three months, but they aren’t setting a precedent by adding this set now. It’s a one time only deal.
It doesn’t say that. It leaves them room to change their mind either way. Ascended gear or requiring Ascended with the upgrades for new content is gear treadmill.
It’s a gear step. A treadmill implies it’s continuous. No where have they stated they will be adding anything beyond Ascended gear. In fact they explicitly said they were not intending to keep adding better tiers of gear.
Actually, that’s not quite true. Here’s what Chris Whiteside actually said;
“We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on”
So you see they are not saying ‘never’ they are just saying not ‘every 3 months’. Their words have obviously been chosen carefully.
I hope Anet are going to be adding a dungeon finder tool soon because once this new gear becomes available, other dungeons just will not be popular. This means anybody that does want to run the older content will have a real job with finding a group.
Seems to me that this is the wrong time to give this announcement. Of course whenever they gave it, people would be unhappy, but right now Blizzard has a free 10 day trial of Mists of Pandaria running to all former players. People might just get deflated enough about Arenanet’s latest news and might turn to something else. It’s possible that a number of those that try MoP might be tempted to stay. It feels like Arenanet are pushing people away, and with the amount of competition out there, if it’s not to MoP, it could well be to some other competitor.
They lied to us for years.

Or, they fully intended to go the route they had “promised” only to find out it wasn’t going to meet the needs financially.
What would you have them do? Just allow the game to crash and burn?
Reality has a way of being a kitten when it comes to lofty ideals meeting a market driven economy.
GW1 was f2p from the start and had multiple expansions. That game was successful enough to warrant a sequel. This game is doing fine.
This isn’t 2004.
The market is a ton more competitive now. Furthermore, GW2 isn’t GW1. Not even close. The design of the game is completely different across the board.
This is a real MMORPG. People expect mechanics that will keep them engaged in their characters.
You can’t get by with MMOG mechanics in a MMORPG in 2012. There has to be a carrot or a reason for folks to keep playing.
That carrot doesn’t need to be vertical progression. They have taken the easy, and in fact, cheap option.
Which is logical for a company that’s out to make money to do especially when their game is free to play and its going downhill.
Face it, if it wasn’t going down hill, if no one ever got bored grinding for skins and everything is the way it was back at launch, they probably would not have done this.
Accept the reality; Gw2 was dying slowly when they thought this up.
Sorry dude, but the game is doing fine. Couple the server populations with the NCSoft 3Q financial statement, and you are just plain wrong.
You keep spouting off that the game is doing fine.
I want a logical explanation as to why, if that were the case, that they would completely change their endgame design, less than 3 months out from the game launch.
Why upset the applecart if there’s no reason to do so?
Greed? Wouldn’t be the first time in business.
Perhaps it is greed.
However, it’s too “early” to pull a cash in maneuver.
I assert the game isn’t doing what they need it to do in the cash shop because of people not staying long enough to purchase anything.
They are hoping this change alleviates some of that. We’ll see if they are right.
I think that people aren’t spending enough in the cash shop because there’s nothing worth buying. I would certainly spend more if there was something worthwhile. I’ll bet I’m not alone.

SWG was slowly going downhill before they introduced the NGE, once that hit, I’ve never seen so many players leave a game so quickly. The NGE was meant to bring in new players, all it did was alienate the loyal playerbase and those that wanted the standard MMO fare that was offered, got it elsewhere in games that did it better.
Would be very sad if this is Arenanet’s ‘NGE’.

Is this going to become the NGE of GW2?
Mists of Pandaria is looking pretty good now, I don’t like the subscription fee but the way the GW2 economy is going, it’d probably work out cheaper in the long run. Then there’s the whole thing about WoW being exactly what it says on the box. Always wanted a reason to go resurrect my Worgen Rogue =)
If you log in to your battle.net account you’ll find a free 10 day trial for MoP…
Even after playing through many MMOs over many years, I have to say that I am still surprised by this community’s reaction over the forums (I do realize it is only a small fraction of the playerbase). Moreover, people’s reaction is ridiculous.
First off, things change. Period. ANet said there would be no gear treadmill, but people blew through the available gear tiers and complained. We now have Ascended gear as a response to complaints. It is a good business decision and a good decision for their game.
Second off, the stat difference is miniscule. An 8% stat increase at level 80 is nothing and will not sway a battle in WvW – where, by the way, equal gear for all was never intended. There are more than enough people complaining about the stat increase, saying it’s meaningful, but +8% of a stat on a piece of gear does not translate to +8% damage output.
Third off, Ascended gear is not barring anyone from the new PvE content. I know all of you complainers can read, but did you skip through the description of how the dungeon will work? You can experience all of the content to your heart’s content, but if you want to do it on super-hard-mode then you better start putting on protection from Agony.
Fourth off, Ascended gear is not customizable. Read that again. Exotic gear has upgrade slots that you can use to customize your stats to whatever build you would like. Ascended gear only has a modification slot for infusions – you cannot modify the stats however you would like. This is the tradeoff.
Fifth off, grow the hell up. This raging portion of the community is acting like a group off pre-pubescent teens, feeding off of one another’s displeasure. If you want change, be constructive, ie. after you have had a chance to actually test the content.
This change will be fantastic for the game. Ascended gear will still allow everyone, including casual players who are bad, to play all PvE content. For players who spend too much time playing games and casual players who are good, infusions and Agony will provide a proper gating system into the hardcore content. Above all, infusions will have no effect in WvW. This change is brilliant.
TL;DR: If you skipped here, you are most likely part of the problem.
If you seriously think people wont be asking for ascended gear for content other than Fractal, you need to think again. Players will always take the path of least resistance meaning that if you have more powerful gear, you will be considered above those that don’t have it.
Ascended gear will block players from current grouped PvE content as well as the new stuff. Have you not seen the people that are specifying ‘level 80 only’ for AC and such? Just wait for the ‘LFM, must have Ascended!’.
LF1M ONLY full Ascended geared allowed , link gear on /w.
Anyone see this happen ?
Of course. It’s bound to happen.
I’ve only just managed to get my first few exotics, I guess they are already obsolete. I’ll probably not manage to even get the ascended gear before the next lot is released if the current time frame is anything to go by.
I came to this game to avoid the treadmill. I think my 15 year relationship with MMOs is coming to an end very soon… It’s a real shame, I guess that we can safely say that developers of all games are full of it, and we should never ever trust anything they say, ever.
Lag problem started for me a few days ago. I’ve never experienced any real issues with lag at all from launch up until recently. It’s got so bad that I can’t face logging in. There is obviously something they have done to affect this as I was playing an awful lot with no issues right up to and through the superb Halloween event.
I’m wondering if it could be something they patched in preparation for the next event? Whatever it is, it needs fixing, I can’t play with 2-3 or more of delay all the time, it’s not fun.
I’m playing from the UK on Desolation server.
Same issue here. Has been fine since launch but recently it’s become a joke. My connection is fine, but when I log in to play GW2 I am experiencing 2-3 seconds + of delay. I’ve pretty much lost the will to log in, which is a shame as I’ve just reached 80 and crafted my first exotic. I really love the game, but I can’t play with the current level of lag.
It is possible to get sued for writing and selling hacks. For example, Blizzard won vs the developers of the most used bot program at the time.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MDY_Indus._LLC_v._Blizzard_Entm%27t,_Inc.
Ah of course, I forgot about the Glider case and the whole Tortious Interference thing…my mistake.
That said, MDY did actually win on a whole lot of their legal arguments and there would always be a good possibility that at judge in a future case may have ruled for MDY.
The interesting thing about that case was that MDY had the judgement against them not for supplying and distributing hacking software, but for infringing copyright.

Josh Foreman who created this puzzle said that he uses a Norn on the tallest setting to test these puzzles, and he specifically mentioned this one too. Unfortunately he also stated that this was probably his worst puzzle of all.
Details here:
One of the themes I tried to explore in a couple places was claustrophobia. (Specifically in Troll End, which I consider to be my worst JP) I always play as the largest male Norn in these areas while I’m building and testing them. One of the reasons for pushing the limits like this is that our engine is malleable because we are an MMO, so we are always tinkering, and it’s possible to push the direction of the engine in new and interesting ways, but only if there are compelling mechanics to justify those changes. I’m one of the guys always pushing and pushing to try to discover new compelling mechanics. That means a lot of experiments. And the nature of experiments is that some fail. But I assure you, at no point have I, or anyone here, built something that totally sucks for one of the races and said, “Well, screw THOSE guys! I don’t care about Norn!”

@Morkai
Yes it’s shady behaviour, but Arenanet would struggle to win any kind of case against him.
I don’t know of a single case in gaming history where a hacker was successfully sued for creating and distributing a third party product to allow them cheat within an online game.
If it could be done, it would have been stopped years ago. This type of thing has been rife in online gaming ever since the beginning.
Has it ever been tried? Or gaming companies just don’t care…
Blizzard tried to sue some 3rd party hackers in StarCraft II. Two years later and they have still not been successful.
Writing a hack is not illegal. Therefore no litigation can be brought to the writer of the hack, and it means that games companies should take their own measures to ensure that these hacks are found quickly, and the people using them are dealt with harshly.
Similarly, using a hack in a game is not illegal either, though it does generally break Terms or Use agreements or End User License Agreements. This means that games developers have to police this type of behaviour themselves.
All MMOs suffer from this type of thing, but the best ones have a robust system in place that finds the hacker quickly and deals with them harshly. It’s likely that Anet does have systems in place to find this kind of thing, but investigating and acting could be taking too much time.
What happens in this case is that some people develop a ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ kind of attitude and the hacking becomes more widespread, thus causing an even bigger issue for the developer.
SWTOR suffered badly from speedhackers in Huttball. I used to PvP in that game a LOT, and I would see tons of these guys grabbing the ball and flying to the other end. I won and lost many games as a result of this and the problem increased rather than decreased as time went by. BioWare did not deal with it quickly enough. I hope Arenanet do…
What do you mean its not illegal? its modifying code, in violation of terms of agreement. The author of the hack should get sued and the user should be banned. I personally have quit other MMORPGS because of hacks. Thats loss of sale/business/profit due to nefarious activity. End of story
Yes it breaks the terms of use but that does not make it ILLEGAL, i.e against the law.
It is often the case that the only way a company can sue for breach of an EULA is if that EULA was signed, physically. Whilst acceptance via mouse click gives a games developer certain powers to police their own game, it does not allow them to sue players for breaching the rules. This may vary from country to country.
In many countries, local law will always supercede these types of agreements anyway.
Agree to disagree, this guy is making profit off of nefarious activity at the expense of a law abiding company. That would hold up in court.
By your logic, one could write up a piece of software to hack a website, sell it to anyone, and it wouldn’t be illegal. Its the responsibility of the owner to protect its data, so lets not call it illegal? That’s what I get from your synopsis.
Logic is immaterial in this case, we are talking about the law. Since when have logic and the law had anything in common?
@Morkai

If they don’t release a patch for it soon, it will most definitely be coming in with the Nov15th Patch.
One of the problems is its always a cat and mouse game with the patches. They patch, the guy releases another hack a day later. ANET really needs to take legal action to stop him from ruining this game like so many were ruined before. So patching doesn’t really solve anything.
They can’t. What they need to do is to jump on the people using the hacks IMMEDIATELY. They need to build in a warning system that flags the accounts using it and banning it instantly. Eventually people will stop using it, or those that don’t will be removed from the game so fast, that it’s not even worth risking it.
October -> Halloween.
November -> Big Update.
December -> Wintersday?
January -> After all this stuff, we might have a few months without new content…
Valentines in Februrary?
Easter in March/April?
January might be quiet, but there are other Holidays that could be used in-game.

Any designer who admits to designing a “holiday” event so difficult they estimate only about 5% of the people will be able to do it has deliberately alienated a majority of their core player base only 2 months after game launch.
Where are you getting this 5% figure?
In my experience from talking in public channels, most people have completed it, and only a few haven’t.
I hope you are not basing your figures on the number of complaints on the forums because only a tiny minority of players bother to use forums, and the majority of those only use them to complain.
It’s a quote from Josh himself (he designed the puzzle) saying he only expected approximately 5% of the people to make it to the top. There’s a link to it buried somewhere in this topic thread.
Wow, 5%, I think they failed if they were shooting for 5%, because I don’t know too many that really wanted to complete it, that haven’t managed it.

If it’s not fun, go play a part of the game you DO enjoy. If you are doing it for the achievement then you’ll have to suck it up. There are always parts of meta achievements in many games that aren’t fun, yet you have to take the rough with the smooth.
I personally enjoyed the clock tower immensely. It was frustrating, it was difficult, but that was the attraction for me. Reading numerous threads over the past few days tells me I’m not alone.
Sure there have been a lot of complaints on the forums, but that’s normal, most people come here to complain rather than praise. In-game however it’s a different story, most people that I’ve seen talking about it over chat channels and certainly those that I have been inside the puzzle with have mostly enjoyed the puzzle.
More of this content please Arenanet. I’m sick of MMOs catering to the crowd that want everything on a plate without actually putting any effort in.

Beat it with my Human Engineer. Loved the puzzle, really hope we see more content like this in the future. It kept me occupied for some time (around 4 hours in total time spent I would estimate).
Didn’t use any speed boosts and was level 76 at the time.
Putting 40 exotic level 80 Staffs into the Mystic Forge and guess what happened?
in Crafting
Posted by: Mandrax.7342
The RNG in this game is well over the top. I have no problem with having to work hard to get items, but gambling at some mystic forge is not fun. It stinks of lazy design to me. Legendary weapons should have epic quest chains, tough encounters, difficult and even costly materials to obtain. Farming and such should be par for the course, but throwing a bunch of stuff into the forge and crossing your fingers should not be a major part of this game.
Ultimately, hard work and dedication should be enough for people to obtain the legendary they require. It should not need all of that plus a HUGE amount of luck in the mystic forge. I seriously hope Arenanet thinks twice about the RNG in because it is actually the single worst part of the game.
I’m not sure what you’re reading which is defining it in a way you don’t like, but I would say ignore that if it’s confusing you. It’s a buff. Plain and simple.
Boon = Buff
Condition = De-buff.
It’s the same as probably every other MMO out there, just slightly different terminology.
Any new content is welcome, particularly if there are people having fun with it, which there clearly are as if you go anywhere near the cauldron or the statue in LA, people are brawling non-stop.
If YOU don’t like it, don’t participate. I personally had a go for about 10 minutes, but after that I was bored and haven’t played it since, but I’m not going to complain about it.
Besides the Brawl is just one part of a four part update which should have a fair amount of extra content. We might not like it all, but there are bound to be some aspects that we do. The beauty of games like these is that you can more or less choose the parts you want to play.
Thanks for pointing out the new window, I came straight here when I realised it was missing from the Hero pane.
I don’t have any problem with Arenanet making money from chests/keys, but they MUST publish the drop rates. I personally think it’s crazy that people would spend real life cash on a gambling system that they have no idea what the odds of winning are.
I think in the UK there are laws against this type of gambling.
I’m a European player and couldn’t care less. We get it a day late and it goes on a day longer. So what? We still get the same amount of time with the patch.
Yeah, I think people are really confusing a LFD message board type of interface with what WoW ended up with, cross realm auto-placing into a group.
A LFG or dungeon or w/e isn’t different from spamming in a town. All it was is that you que for dungeons and ppl would contact you to see if you wanted to run the dungeon.
Anyhow, what is needed here is a global LFG chat that is server wide. Even when guesting is up, keep it server only because I foresee ppl using it to spy in wvw if it were cross server.
It’s either that or a dungeon message board, where you click a box to tell others looking at this interface that you want to do this dungeon and this particular path and then people message you through tells or what have you. This could be cross realm due to guesting will probably be in effect anyway.
it’s already like this in gw2 i think… well… similar…
the problem is that most people don’t know it exist..
I don’t mind a lfg tool that’s more in line with gw1… but a system like WoW is just… BAD. The last thing i want is to turn LA into a queue hub
The current system is totally USELESS. You can’t even specify what you are looking for a group for. This single reason alone is why it is not even worth using the current tool.
Yes we need a better LFG system, but we need one that is closer to that of DDO than that of WoW.
Maybe it’s just far easier to give people credit via damage than taking other skills and abilities into account?
I’m still only mid 50’s level-wise and I’m finding that bugged events are becoming more and more common as I get higher in level. The biggest problem I’m finding is that due to so many bugged events, there is not enough XP in the zone to allow me to level up properly. I basically go from heart to bugged event to bugged event and hopefully find an event that works somewhere in between. I’m having to grind mobs, and farm materials a LOT in order to make up the short fall in XP.
Of course I’ve tried switching zones too, but when it takes you ages to get to a new zone (I use waypoints sparingly to maximise cash), you arrive and there are just more bugged events, it gets frustrating.
I enjoy the game but I’m not finding the grind much fun. I like the events, whenever one pops up I drop everything to get involved, but so many not working is poor IMO.
39 in a couple of weeks and still very much enjoying the game. As someone with a wife and family, I love the fact that I don’t feel left behind because I can’t play every single night. I love that I can get some nice gear without having to commit to a rigid raiding schedule. This game is very much for me and I hope to be playing it for some considerable time.
Just for the record, I never played Guild Wars so it’s not just a case that I’m a fan of the brand, I’m a new customer
I’m on Desolation and have found the community to be excellent. Channel chat is content but is rarely offensive. Help is given often and freely when people are asking for it. During DE’s lots of people help res/heal/support.
Overall I have had a superb experience with the community in this game and I love my home world.
Other MMOs do have this problem. They always have. Even the giant of them all World of Warcraft has always suffered from botting. I agree however that Anet need to come down hard and get rid a lot faster than they are currently doing. It is ruining the game experience for a lot of people.
We (the players) are in a tough position at the moment. We can’t farm some of the items required due to bots taking over many areas, and if we buy them off the Trading Post, it’s likely the money is going straight to the botters.
The bots are definitely winning at the moment, I just hope Anet has a master plan up their sleeve on how they intend to sort the problem out, and that they implement that plan sooner rather than later.
Same issue here. Guild window says I am the only person in the guild. I pressed ‘Stand Down’ to see if I could stand down then represent again to fix it, but now I can’t represent lol.
Also, if I type /g then type some text, I get a message that says ‘You are not in a guild’.
Same issue here. Also the guild I am in has over 100 members yet it’s showing only me in the guild.
It’s early days with the DE’s. As ArenaNet learn more, I’m sure they’ll start to become much more interesting.
