Behold fellow players, this is how PvE content is made with minimal effort. All it takes is one tiny change and players will have hundreds of hours of grind to enjoy. Just like the last few patches when ascended weapons and after that armor came out!
I honestly hope I am wrong. I honestly do want to believe, that whatever they came up with, is reasonable and will make the game better. I have been hoping for the past few days, but the blog post is still nowhere to be seen.
In fact, this will create not hundreds of hours of play; it will create just a bubble of 5-10 minutes to un-install the game.

critical damage changes
okay i try to see the whole Picture
in earlier Posts some devs said they try to do something against the berserk meta in PvE. Thats okay.
But now i have the fear, that this changes will also be there in PvP.
Everyone knows that the actual PvP meta is all in all Condition. With Changes in Crit Dmg that will probably a nerf we will see a push of condition builds as consequence.
So i really hope that the crit dmg changes will be pve/WvW only
When we are talking about this “berserk” dominance We have to refer to dungeons/fractals only, I suppose.
If the changes affect so much the results in dungeons/fractals to change gear…well, good luck with keeping players in this game, IMHO.
Desolation
Personal question: Will a balance overview thread be posted in the forums?
“Critical damage changes” <- Intriguing.
Intriguing indeed if they go in a good direction, else most will be intrigued by other games in return.
Desolation
I requested the sticky. And if the changes effect the build in a big way then I will be updating this thread. Dont worry.
I already have ideas for decent damage builds which also have a lot more survivability. But they arent needed in the current meta.
Also if the meta shifts to taking a condi class in groups I will most likely update this to include whatever meta condi build we come up with.
If the changes to critical dmg will be big, then I guess there will not be a problem of changing the build but probably the issue will be to switch to another game:-)
Desolation
many thanks for the clarification.
Desolation
Hullo folks!
I have a dilemma on combo fields priority, in specific I play a hammer guardian with constant light field (due to symbol) and I would like to know if there is any explanation on how priority works for combo fields. I would imagine the last field takes priority for the blast finishers.
In practice I would like to determine whether putting fire fields down with an omni-present light field is convenient/rational.
Desolation
@Ogro: great job as always, mate. Keep on rockin’ that hammer!
Desolation
Obal has provided all that is required for dungeons in his build guide. This build= not even close. It serves one purpose: To lead less knowledgeable people into wasting their time and money on something subpar.
Here is one of his grateful customers from the necro thread.
You know what I hate, when I look for a good build for something, seems to make sense, go start building it, then find out its crap. Before I got better at guardian I bought into the knights AH build that was popularized via popular youtube contributer. Yeah, it worked for pugging and I never died ect, but my dmg was terrible and I dragged the team down. Same thing happened before I got better info on the hybrid/dps necromancer video. Didn’t know much about the class so I trusted a popular youtuber… Yeah, build was underwhelming in dungeons and I wasted a fair amount of gold and time (which is a bigger deal than gold) on crap gear.
In all fairness, Nemesis contributed a lot to the theory-crafting and discussion about the Necromancer. This and his efforts must be appreciated.
It is also true that, in my humble opinion, he tries to think out of the box and to unveil “undiscovered marvels”, which sometimes are not undiscovered, they are just sub-optimal.
In a game like GW2, where in fact you can play a variety of styles/builds, there is always fertile ground for new proposals/ideas. Nonetheless, I play this game (as any other) trying to be as effective as possible and, in doing this, I have fun. People think differently, and may argue that their way to have fun is different and they want to play how they want…it sounds fair to me, but do not join my party, please.
In brief: I am thankful to Nemesis once again for his efforts, I just hope not to find guardians in my party with his build.

Thanks, guys! Much appreciated.

Hi folks,
just a quick question which bothers me a bit.
I think I know the answer but just in case:
Do sigils which increase damage % (force, of the night, slayer sigils) stack?
If I have a superior sigil of force on my sword and a sigil of slaying undead on my focus, do I get 15% dmg against undead (in Arah)? OR forcenight (in a night dungeon) do I get +15%?
Many thanks!
Desolation
Best support : Reflects, blinds, aoe vulnerability, virtues, stability.
I consider anything with 0 power on the gear to be unacceptably low damage.
Starting to thing that builds which hit the key points (15/15/0/20/20, 10/30/0/5/25) and just take selfish survivability gear (PVT) are probably the best bet for new/bad players.
I believe also that a Hammer build is fairly simple and solid for new players. Auto-attack and Mighty Blow every 2 rotations is simple enough to focus more on dodging, etc.
Desolation
this should also help mate. Guardian is a lot of fun.
Desolation
Yeah im aware of that guardian is nowhere near the same damage as warriors. But ive been told from some people that guardians can put out more just less bursty but i dunno i feel really weak in dmg, could be i dont have all that cool gear yet
I am not so sure that after 10 December this is still true.
I think the Guardian can get near the sustained damage of a warrior (without considering the fact he would provide support with blindness, etc. which is not strictly related to DPS but still very nice).
20/25/0/0/25 would be my choice (sw/F + GS)
Desolation
Healing, toughness and vitality are not the best ways of staying alive. They help, but the largest portion of staying alive is dodge/blind/aegis/reflect/kill things quick.
Amen to this!
For as much as GW2 allows for a variety of builds and let you run through the majority of content regardless to maximized efficiency, there is no such thing as an “healer” as conceived in other MMOs where you have the trinity (tank/healer/dps).
I think it is more fun to find alternative ways to support your party rather than spam 3 healing spells for the whole encounter. Hence, my advice: to let go the old concept of healer and focus on what the game provides you with.
Naturally, in the end you will have to play what’s more fun for you.
Desolation
Thanks for the tips guys.
Can you please specify which talents/utilities (the usual suspected shouts?) to pick in 15/15/0/20/20 (since it seems the most agreed upon)?
Also with hammer should I use Staff or Scepter/Shield for ranged if needed?
Desolation
I am not new at all, but I am new to Guardian (since I leveled it here and there until 80 and then parked the toon).
Your suggestion would be then to leave AH when I start to get accustomed a bit with the mechanics? or give it a try, let’s say, to a AH full zerk gear?
Desolation
Hi all, I was just wondering whether Altruistic Healing builds are still viable for Guardians who just approached the world of dungeons and fractals (all dungeons and fractals 1-19)?
I read that the schools of thought are either Sword/Focus + GS or Hammer (for more protection). Is it worth it to start with an AH to learn the ropes or the difference is so big that it is better to simply go for S/F?
Any updated builds with Ah worth checking?
Thank you for your advice.
Desolation
Hi Neko, thank you for the good efforts!
Will you update the guide after the balance patch of 10 December?
Desolation
The only reason I see to keep this look on is if you do not have gems to buy transmutation crystals.
Desolation
You’ll see Deso declining from now on since all the pve’ers have their achievements and league is over.
Don’t want to get too close the gold league for the next season eh
God forbid!
Desolation
I had thought the finisher would have been a permanent finisher or permanent until the next season when or if it changed hands to a new server. This is what should have been given as the meta reward for winning.
A nice skin would have also been great since living story hands them out every time a dolyak farts.
I would also have thought a better WXP reward, badges and some laurels would be included.
Unfortunately, I’m not surprised what was given.
I could not agree more with this.
It should have been:
1- Something to show off (perma finisher or until next season, special dye, a back item or similar, etc.)
2- Rewards related to WvW. For 500 Achievement Points I get 250 Badges of Honour…but for 7 weeks of WvW I receive none (this is just an example)
I am sure this will have an impact on an eventual WvW Season 2. It is not about the big rewards (if you want a precursor go farm it in PvE) it is more about a bit of recognition and show off (which is important in a game were cosmetics are 90% of it) for keeping it going for 7 weeks (or until the meta achievement, as you like).
Hardcore WvWers will play WvW anyway (until a better/newer game comes out, I guess), but the new wave of WvW casuals will not be attracted that much. I repeat it: a small exclusive thing like a skin, dye, a perm finisher or whatever (like in every two-weeks living story patch) would have been more than sufficient to make the large majority of players happy. Only a few hoped for fat loot.
I will not holding my breath for a Season 2
Desolation
(edited by Manuelito.6081)
Here’s what I don’t get. Are you people new? WvW has always had less the stellar rewards to investment in it. This should come as a surprise to no one who has actively been doing wvw for any amount of time. I’m more shocked that the chest actually has a decent amount of dragonite in it.
Agreed. If you did WvW for the rewards, then you probably should’ve stuck to PvE
there is no logical reason player versus player shouldnt have decent rewards, and more importantly somethings that you aim for as a competitor
There is a logical reason. The diehard fans of WvW are tired of reward-seeking players who don’t care about WvW objectives taking spots and causing crazy long queues. WvW players want to play with like-minded players and want to play against like-minded players.
If you want rewards, there is a game mode that gives you good rewards: PvE. Stay out of WvW if you don’t intend to WvW
@baek, you are way off, mate. The point here is not to have EQUAL rewards to PvE (that would be silly), but do you think that a perma finisher for the first 3 server of each league would have been too much?
If this is the case, then I won’t argue with you, it is your opinion and I respect it.
Desolation
Do you want even more non-WvW players in WvW chasing rewards?
Do you play WvW for the rewards or for the game mode itself?
First we complain about too many PvE players chasing rewards and then we complain about not good enough rewards. There is no right answer and so we the WvW community look like a bunch of whiny jerks and then we wonder why Anet doesn’t want to give us more attention.
I agree the rewards are lame but I honestly can’t think of anything that would have made me excited that would NOT have also had a more detrimental effect in filling WvW with more rally-bait carrot-chasers.
My point is – no matter how correct or justified you are, know what you want to accomplish and be constructive towards it because right now we’re just solidifying our place on the back burner.
in brief: dolly finisher permanent would have been sufficient for me, as for many other players.
Then, in all fairness, the reward for S1 is simply underwhelming compared of what you can get by farming 1 hour in Frostgorge (as someone rightly pointed out).
Now here you have only one question: do you feel that the wvw s1 reward for the meta achievement is fair if compared to: monthly/daily/living story meta rewards?
Desolation
(edited by Manuelito.6081)
So… The WvW Season 1 Chest rewards = 1 hour of Champion farming in Frostgorge Sound.
In fact, this is so true that it hurts.
Desolation
Disappointed to the max.
250 charges of the finisher
Mini dolyak
5 skill points
10 levels
1 exotic
3 rares
rest greens
this is just ridiculous…I though the finisher was permanent…I mean, not that that would have left me satisfied, the reward is very poor, we all know that, but the finisher not permanent…really??!!? so that I play season 2 (instead of creating a new finisher for s2)? no, thanks.
@Anet: really cheap cheap cheap shot

Deso played it smart and they won. They deserve congratulations without the whining on how they play. :/
Yes, they do deserve our congratulations. I’ve personally take it a step further than that.
In view of the magnificent accomplishments of Desolation’s mighty warriors, capturing first place in the esteemed Silver League, I’ve built a shrine in my home to the Gods of Desolation. In fact, this is my first time posting in a matchup thread this season, given that the very passing of one of Desolation’s brave soldiers makes me tremble with fear. In the center of this shrine I’ve fixed the image of an Omega golem. On the wings are the images of a gate torn asunder and the cast down bodies of those weak Veteran Guards who were unable to defend my own home server. I keep the candles on the shrine lit like so many scouts through the night, so that it glows in the dark of night, and when I pass it during the day, its magnificence leaves me humbled.
To this shrine I bring an offering each night to safeguard Desolation’s embattled fighters. Last night it was a dead squirrel. Tonight it’ll be a pigeon. I’m hoping to find a rat for tomorrow.
I believe that this experience that has brought us in contact with the ultimate victors in the Silver League must be commemorated, and I urge all my fellow players to do their part to honour these individuals from Desolation who follow a higher calling in their play. There can be no doubt that their total domination has been won through true excellence in strategy, tactics, and sheer prowess in all aspects that constitute this game that is World vs. World.

no they dont, they are here only for the league prize >.<
Yes, and you are here for charity, I suppose.
Desolation
I’d like to congratulate Deso on their first place finish in Silver league. You should be mid-table in Gold, but thanks to some subtle tanking, you get the top spot in our league. I can’t remember, would it have been Kodash by rights? They might well have won. Would have been a good fight; Gandara, Kodash, Blobbadon, Blobbadon Jr. Anyway, Deso guys, enjoy those gold finishers! Nobody has any respect for you but, kitten me, you sure can Doylak my face now!
And may I ask what is the purpose of this post, since it is not obviously to congratulate Desolation…
Is it the first hint that more pointless whining is incoming into forums? Since it looks that until Desolation is below points everything is fine; however, as soon as we take the lead all the QQ starts…
I thought we all were tired of useless remarks from people who obviously still does not get how WvW works and/or cannot stand the fact that the precious golden dolly finisher is lost.
Keep it classy for once, guys, and let’s conclude this season in a civil way. Nobody has respect for forum trolls.
Edit: Sorry Ins, I took the bait:-)
Desolation
The end of the season is near. What will happen with first place? Will the first server shift to gold?
Anet has declared that the possible Season 2 is still in discussion and surely will not begin immediately after Season 1 (it seems the feedback on Season 1 was particularly bad).
In my view, this means that there will still be weeks and weeks of the “regular” championship and then when Season 2 is announced they will see in which position the servers are at.
Basically, the same exact thing that happened before Season 1. There will not be any link between the placements in Season 1 and the new order in Season 2.
So, yes. Still a chance to tank down a league, if necessary.
Desolation
It will be interesting to see who’s gonna get the 3rd spot in the Gold League.
Jade Sea can still make it.
From a spectator’s point of view, still some excitement going on!
I wish good fights to all the servers for the final rush!

Every thread like that has to have its share of “2L33T4U just L2P nub dredge frac is fine my guildies run it in 15 mins” responses. As someone who has also routinely run 30s and 40s since the introduction of fractals, I can say:
1. There are strategies to speed up dredge, but those strategies still leave it far longer than any other fractal, and too long overall for something that is supposed to be completed as part of a series of four.
2. Dredge has always been the most exploited fractal because of how pointlessly long it is. Most people before the patch at the very least died on the buttons because that was just easier, and most did and still do make use of at least one of the exploits to bypass the gates in the beginning. I have not seen the gates done legitimately in months.
3. Many of the criticisms cannot be pushed aside with “L2P nub.”I have learned to play and play with people who also know. Sadly, I cannot L2P making the stupid bombs respawn faster (it even slows down doing it with thieves), or have fewer dredge in the clowncar, or make Rabsovich have less health than the bosses of most of the other fractals.
100% agreed!
Please. Anet, r-design part of this horrible instance.

Really now? You all think that only deso has chickens and bullies? Why are you not mentioning the times that our zerg leaves your sniping teams and pass near it or leave the roamers alone? Why dont you mention the times when your zergs (even when more than us) hides in their tower instead of facing us? You can get in your towers, you have all the right to do this. No problem. It is a game. Whatever you say we do, you do it also. How many times we hunted you for some battles and you fled? We have no problem whatsoever, do anything you think that benefits your realm. Just do not accuse others when you do the same. I have had MANY good battles with fsp and gandara, have been wiped, have killed. It is a game adter all. We play for fun as far as I know… as for the ppl that started in WvW, most that were pure pvers and achievement hunter, liked wvw and stayed in. By now everyone has had their veteran of the mists. Whoever we hunting achievements, left, whoever liked wvw stayed. What is so hard to accept there? Gold or silver or bronze league? I respect everyone that we have confronted and was not whining around “deso this, deso that”. That is MY opinion. Whoever wants to have fun, plays either he wins or loses. Everyone else search for an excuse.
You are right in every word just see how easly you say “we” “us” “our zerg” while I said when im alone.
Funny thing I played like 2 hours today, been wiped togroup of 4 FS and group of 5 deso and against 2 ppl from deso and against deso mesmer which got lucky by the camp npc’s surprise attack. and the last one I wiped was for a FS perma stealth thief.
The perma thief saluted me the 4 group of FS guys didnt do nothing and both that deso mesmer and those 2 deso warriors and espically the 5 deso group who start to dancing on my corpse ALL /laugh /dance and kitten now go on and tell me it is a simple coincidence.
I think nobody agrees that corpse dancing is polite nor that it respects the WvW etiquette.
Desolation
Not entirely sure if I should defend Desolation or not, as this discussion is rather pointless. However, I’ll still give it a shot. I’ll be straight down the line here, you decide what you make of it in the end.
As I took the lead and struggled to revive the server and rally the guilds, you could say I know what happend and how it happend. What happend to Desolation? Did we tank the Silver League? Far from it. A couple of weeks before the League kicked off, we lost major forces again for the third time.
<snip>
From this moment onwards, we had to be realistic. We knew what Vizunah was all about. Most of those Guilds who remained were active during that era and pretty much did not want to get stomped once again. Therefore we decided to get into Silver League. Did we had to do an effort to drop down? Not at all. Our poor numbers took care of that and eventually we dropped and ended in Silver.
(emphasis mine)
You are kinda jumping into your own mouth here mate. You didn’t tank but you lost just enough rating to get into silver.
Also, it wasn’t a PvE crowd that introduced 5am 10 omega golem rushes to the silver league.
We faced you twice during your tanking phase and the difference was staggering – much less skilled opposition during prime-time then in pre-league matches and heavy nightcapping. Congratulations on becoming what you hated – Vizunah Square.
Perhaps re-read the post again. Tanking and dropping are 2 complete different things. Therefore your statement becomes invalid.
Anyways, not going to bother any longer. Got a problem with Deso? Fight for it and bring it to the game, not on the forum. Deso fought against Vizunah for months which looked like a lost battle, atleast we never lost our fighting spirit, even after being close to free fall thrice. Not many servers can say the same.
Amen
Desolation
I was actually planning on staying away from this topic, but its getting cold outside so why not poke the flames a bit more?
Is Desolation still the Gold league tier server you used to be? No, and there is no reason to not believe you lost some of your core WvW guilds and players, but I don’t think that is the main point people are discussing here. The main issue people have is the idea that you deliberately lost more points than you would’ve lost naturally just to get into silver league where you would have an easy time. Well we already know you tanked. Several people have “admitted” that you wanted to get into silver league (probably with different motives though). Now the fact that it is followed up with comments about it happening more or less on its own anyway is irrelevant, since there was an actual decision being made. And why would you want to wait with trying to salvage your WvW community until you hit silver league and not at the point in time where this mass-exodus happened? Do you really want to build your community on fair-weather players?
Now I know most Desolation players will claim that they weren’t expecting to win silver and it just kinda happened in the end, but I always found it interesting that you lost the exact amount of strength that put you in the gap between being destroyed in gold league and dominating silver league. And i know, you have a large PvE population, but there are plenty of servers with a high PvE population so I don’t buy that being the sole reason you turned it around.
I was actually looking a bit on the matchup history on MOS and in the last matchup before the start of the season Desolation actually faced of against us (Gandara) and UW:
http://mos.millenium.org/servers/view/15/112
Gandara was actually winning that matchup up until around Tuesday, where something happened to the Desolation nightcrew. This was three days before the start of the season so it couldn’t really be the influx of PvE players that did it? Now I’m sure plenty of Desolation players can give me an explanation for that, but you have to admit it does look a bit suspicious how it coincides with the point in time where Desolation could no longer regain enough rank to get back into gold does it not?In the end though I guess we will have to wait until the end of season one to get a feel for the real strength of (the new) Desolation and who knows maybe we will meet again in season two, be it in gold, silver or bronze
I thought people were tired of conspiracy theories.
Desolation as it is now would probably be in between 7th – 9th place in Gold League, if this is what forum warriors unhappy with the 2nd/3rd/4th place in the Silver League are suggesting, then I fully agree.
It is a fact that Desolation does not have the organization/strategy it used to have with full WvW guilds and that our success in the Silver League has been due to (a) massive participation of new players (mainly stolen from PvE) and (b) night-morning crew. It is a fact that we got wiped in situations that only two months ago would have been impossible to happen.
Desolation could not compete today for better than 7th or 8th place in the Gold League, everybody knows that new players would easily and quickly lose enthusiasm when steamrolled by better organized server with (yes this also) better coverage and more numbers.
Now, I feel that this was a fun Season in Silver League also for other servers who fought against desolation.
If you like just the fights: I think desolation gave you a good bunch of fights and lootbags.
If you just care about the points: I feel for you, Desolation lived that phase for months before you started whining, so I know perfectly how you feel, but being cry-babies for a system (Anet) that is made to benefit zergs, coverage and numbers, is not very useful.
All I can tell you is that I hope serious and decent players enjoyed this Season as much as I did, including all the things that could have been better.
For the forum trolls, on the other hand, who just complain and complain because they lost a golden/silver/bronze/woodenDolly finisher: your tears are very, very sweet.
Desolation
thank you for the clarification!
Desolation
yes, I meant in open world and in WvW. Did you mean to say that in open world, including WvW, there are only 2h of ‘night’?
Desolation
(edited by Manuelito.6081)
in terms of time, does the sigil of night work from 6pm to 6am server time?
Desolation
Leagues have the beneficial effect to bring something rather “new” to the plate with achievements and rewards, at least for players who never got an interest in it beforehand. This is what attracts the majority of players, usually.
I can only agree with the initiative to raise awareness about WvW, which seems to have been the Cindarella of other aspects of the game for too long.
Nonetheless, I reckon that a lot more needs to be done to keep it interesting. In the case of a Season #2, I expect way more than an overflow map (which, frankly, seems rather useless to WvW dedicated players – no points to the server).
Desolation
+1000. The screen is a mess with dead bodies.
Desolation
No thanks. It’s already way too easy for zerglings to get easy WXP.
I can tell you that people join zergs and WXP trains also because they have to re-farm WXP for a new character.
For instance, if I decide to play WvW with a new profession, be assured that I would try to find the way to make as many WXP as possible and as fast as possible= join a zerg and tag whatever i can.
There is a good chance, on the other hand, that an account-wide WXP would not give me that pressure.
I have 7 characters and my WXP are spread all over the place. I like to vary and this is the only place in gw2 where having an alt is a minus.
Desolation
As argus said.
WXP account wide. Points spent = character specific
AMEN to this! 1000 times.
If I had had only one character leveled up to 80 I would have already quit the game.
Leveling different classes is one of the good experiences of GW2, it is fun and practically everything is account-wide. Alts do matter, they mean more skins, farming, etc. so they mean more playing hours.
So I do not see the logic here. The number of hours spent playing the game should count (as they do for everything else, glory, karma, badges, achievement points, etc.), not the number of hours played with one character.
If the game didn’t have anything account-wide, then I would agree also to have WXP restricted.
If you only play one character then this is obviously not a concern to you.

My guess is that the chest will contain Pristine Toxic Spore Samples, a green item or two (with chances for Rares/Exotics as usual), and a chance for the new Air Filtration/Gas Mask/Toxic Spore skins.
I concur. If on the one hand I do not want exotics / ascended dropping at a higher rate, I still think that at least they could make an effort with more rares…
I would not hold my breath for skins that are sold in the gem store…
minis: yawn.

I will be happy if:
1- there are no bugs;
2- the challenge does not consist in kiting oozes;
3- the encounters are not tank and spank.
EDIT: I would also love to see an instance in which you can go max 2 players. I like the idea of a duo combo. Just my two cents.

Also, to the forums warriors: is it OK if we say that Deso won on points, but morally AG is the winner because they are better in prime time?
Peace.
Desolation
So, a silver league server wipes us during prime time and brags about it, while at the same time arguing we should be in gold, even though we are clearly weaker than them. That pesky logic, how does it work?
you are clearly weaker at prime time only and some parts of the day; during the night and the morning, you zerg us into oblivion, that’s why you should be in gold league.
So that you could have a shot at 3rd place?
Sorry, couldn’t resist.Mostly so that we could have server who provides entertainment (read fights), when we´re playing and not at 6am.
Apart from reset i´ve been on 2 raids this week, both started really really slow, untill late at night ( well late from my perspective, towards the end of usual eu primetime anyhow) when deso blob comes out and starts to offer some action.
I guess then you will have the chance to show your worth in round #4 and #5. Else, this is just trolling.
