It all has to do with the game economy. Since gold is tied so tightly to gems and RMT, restoring the items and coin of hacked accounts would upset the balance. It’d be akin to printing money for you every time someone was mugged.
Another glorious side effect of our monetized game.
If that actually mattered to ArenaNet, they could look in the mail database to see where the money was sent and delete it from there. Justice and zero-sum exchange.
But it’s gonna be labor-intensive. Even if rolling back a hacked account only took 5-10 minutes, that’s a lot of labor $$. In the first couple weeks alone, over 30000 accounts were hacked. You’re talkin in hundreds of thousands $$ in support for a company that’s doing significant layoffs and reorganization.
It’s not about printing in-game money. Cuz they can unprint it, too. But in the real world it’s not that easy.
You’re about 50%. It has more to do with scale. By the time the investigation is wrapped up, items have been melted down, moved, sold. Coin has been dispersed. Its not a simple matter of tracking it and deleting it. Its not physical currency. That money has also moved into the hands of legitimate players through legitamite business. Removing it would hit more people than a single hacked player. ArenaNet is playing the odds. That and as you say, labor.
The only reason they won’t magically recreate dupes of his stuff so his experience isn’t further impacted is because of how it would imbalance their revenue source.

Might be related to the new build. I’m having similar issues. Spells not casting properly and de-synching from the server. Hilariously, I’m trying to do Bad Blood and that’s probably the worst time for this to occur.
Oh well, another three months before I even think about recommending this game to anyone.
Damage done. Gold sales made. Material cost lowered when the threshold of players willing to RMT to cut out grind is reached. ArenaNet rewarded for pr nightmare. Paves way for future ‘mea culpas’ with initially prohibitive grinds to suck money from trusting playerbase.
Doctor Solus… is that you?
Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong.
Well considering that 10,000 post hread about the disaster that was the lost Shores weekend now seems to have disappated, I’d say people have moved on. Don’t forget all the crying was BEFORE they launched fractals….Now everything is all about lfg (pick you difficulty) fractals spam in LA. People moan, but they secretly love grinding the new gear
They locked that thread, actually. It was still going strong.
Not a dime from me from here on. I’ll play until I hit the pay wall. But their sale this weekend was horrible, the content on the store nil. Looks like they want cash for gold to bypass grind to be their market now.
instead of asking of a reset, why not ask the dev to Fix the bugs which will cause the events to get bugged? Reset doesn’t fully guaranty it wouldn’t get bugged again!
Fixed bugs is not a revenue source. Unless upon reaching a million gems sold, ArenaNet offers to fix a bug? Could be onto something.
Imo the biggest screw up they did was limiting how you could get ascended gear, making running FoTM did not score much imo. If they would have made craftable version’s, and pvp version’s from the get go, I think alot of this firestorm could have been negated or atleast deminished.
ANet initially introduced Ascended gear via the FotM. They have written that this, perhaps, was the wrong way to go about. However, this new gear tier will roll out throughout the game; which will mean it will provide more accessible ways to get it.
The major problem with that is if we apply the current grind for ascended items to other avenues all you’re looking at is more flavors of grinding available. Think about it, 2000 badges of honor for 1 item, 1 million karma per item, or 20 dungeon runs for 1 item. Not to mention that both karma and WvW have severely limit stat combinations. They could add 20 different ways to get ascended items but if the current grind is any indicator they still wouldn’t be more accessible.
Read the AMA. They stated that they realized that the price of ascended items were disproportionate in certain ways to the amount of work they wanted people to put in for them in comparison and they’re looking in to it.

Welcome to vertical progression =)
The Jigsaw Killer would be proud of what ArenaNet has wrought.
Its installing a grind that is so unappealing that only the most hardcore will grind it out (in spite of DR), and lure players with the means and fear of being left behind to open their wallets for cash→gem→gold RMT. The DR is even there to encourage RMT.
If they can get even a small subset to cough up money, it’s a win, since people aren’t falling for the RNG in BLCs and their gem shop has zero in cosmetic stuff worth buying.
What is the point of this?
From the last Q&A it became obvious that they are not allowed to answer the real questions. This is a waste of time. They’re gonna cheery pick out questions again. Actual communication is not possible while Nexon/NCsoft stands between ANet and us.
The answers will most likely be generic and insubstantial PR again.
We can’t get answers, they can’t give answers.
It’s just a torture for both them and us at this point.
If the exercise can pry open the wallet of even one disillusioned fanboi and fill him with warm fuzzies, then it is Mission Accomplished.
And there is nothing to do with drop rate. They are the same.
If you have ever farmed Orr you would not make such a statement. And if you do farm Orr then you are lying to yourself. Everyone who farm there notice the nerf of drop both in quantity and quality.
It’s all about balance… Finding the balance that increases Gold for Gem sales while keeping up the charade that the BLTC is optional.
I had this drop. I was like Oh yeah…
Cash -> Gems -> Gold
The path of dedication.
Is anyone aware that the legendary gear is going to be upgraded to ascended level as they continue to release more?
Do you mean, the Exotic gear will be upgraded to Ascended level? It was my understanding that Legendaries would remain the most powerful items in the game. I don’t really actively seek info about the game and in particular upcoming changes but rely mostly on second hand knowledge of friends who do actively seek such info so it’s completely possible you know something I don’t. Just curious…
Exotics and Legendaries are the same in terms of stat points right now. For some reason, a lot of people think the stats on a Legendary are better, numerically speaking. They are not. They are the same.
Legendaries will be adjusted to match the Ascended gear numerically. That is power creep. That is increasing the stat ceiling on a game balanced around 80 Exotics being the
Ceiling for as high as you can go and that is why people are upset, at least as far as Ascended.
Well, Chris Whiteside comments on the Lost Shores Event and the future is a pretty standard PR reply after a major blunder.
Although pointing the positive and acknowledging the negative aspects, you gloss the positive and understate the negative. Then you throw a bone to distract the costumers and raise expectations by talking about future features. Basically you focus the attention of the costumers on what is coming, trying to defuse the present state of affairs.
The problem being that everyone knows that what is coming is a grind and a treadmill. Oh, they’ll promise everyone that there will be other ways to obtain the gear, but we won’t get specifics. There will be no guarantee that it will be less grindy ot that gear of the same stat value will be equally available. Sorry, I’ve already been trained to expect to get screwed for not playing the main event, lik WoW PvP. Playing that casually never got me gear that would allow me to fight on equal footing with people doing Rated. All you could do was chew glass in BGs and get subpar gear that let you curbstomp fresh 80/85/90s.
If they don’t come to the AMA with clear, definitive words and zero spin, they’ll get eaten alive. Look at the threads. A good portion have zero faith in the AMA being useful as it is. ANet’s credit is at an all time low. They will need to wow them with wit, not baffle them with bullkitten.
Alright, I am confused:
So the only way Arenanet will be able to give you honest answers is if you ask them questions they are unprepared for and put them on the spot?
I thought the entire point of this was to get answers. If this improves the quality and the number of answers we can get? This sounds like a great idea.
Again, any professional person being interviewed usually will not agree to an interview without knowing the questions beforehand to prepare. The same happening for the Arenanet employee helps a lot in giving us as much information as possible instead of hearing “I don’t know that answer personally.”
Yes the only way to get honest answers is if they can’t prepare and rehearse them in advance. If someone is given time they can sidestep sensitive topics, which actually defeats the purpose of something like this.
I do not see any answers coming from this AMA as pointed out it is just a PR stunt. So if anything sensitive truly is discussed in an honest fashion I will be surprised and give Anet some credit back to them.
This. They need to be interviewed by a neutral entity that is well-rehearsed and informed on the issues, but has nothing to lose if asking the interviewee a sensitive question makes the subject uncomfortable. Good luck there. Video game journalism is on par with political journalism in is respect. If you don’t treat the subject with kid gloves, you risk alienating them and losing access o the exclusivity regular interviews/access brings. Why would they come to you if they can’t be guaranteed a positive return?
AMAs give too much control to the person being questioned. You can ask anything, but they do not necessarily have to answer. In fact, good AMAs are judged based on the subject’s willingness to tackle difficult and sensitive questions that may have an unpopular response. These days, they are used to draw people’s attention and expose them to your truths… not The Truth.
When a company refuses to maintain an open, honest and transparent dialogue, speculation and pessimism are the only tools left to defend yourself with.
How often has it been proven that silence, denial and/or meek justification in the face of such things has ever lead to a positive result in the court of public opinion.
Hello Chris. Thank you very much for conducting an AMA. We’re very excited to hear from you!
I would be honored if you could please answer some of my questions:
o 1) Can we expect to see more on the Tengu in the future?
o 2) What did Koss write about himself in his autobiography? (“Koss on Koss” backpiece)
o 3) Is Karka meat edible?Thank you!
Not sure if serious.
In either case, those are they type of questions the kittenjerk hivemind on /r/Guildwars2 will upvote and the are also the type of questions that keystrokes and a lunch break will be spent answering.
Reddit is a horrible platform for getting real answers.
When casting Scepter 3 on a female Mesmer (Sylvari and Human and I’m guessing Norn, since all are probably based on the same skeleton) … the scepter floats.
Every other gender/race grasps it when casting Scepter 3.
Hi All,
Thanks for your feedback we really appreciate it. I would like to take the opportunity to answer your questions in an AMA on Reddit on Monday 26th (12pm PST- More details to follow) to talk about recent updates to the game and our philosophy for Guild Wars 2 moving forward.
Please keep in mind that there we are about to begin the Thanksgiving holiday in the US and are out of the office (and likely in game) until Monday. Happy Holidays everyone!
Chris
Hopefully this is weighted with the proper respect that the lack thereof caused the original to be deleted.
With all due respect, but this format is only really good for people who are anonymous. Such as IAMA doctor AMA and in a general discussion forum about medicine. Doctoring, engineering, etc, rarely has enough fans. It is all about imparting information, not public relation spin.
Holding an AMA in the GW2 subreddit will just increase the noise to signal ratio as the hive-mind asks irrelevant questions that have little do with the reasons you have to do the AMA. To smooth over all the issues the November 15th update caused.
The softest ball that passes over that particular plate will be struck, and the hive-mind will consider it a home run and call it caring. This a PR move. And any dissent will be down-voted by the hive-mind mentality that happens on /r/guildwars2, no matter how relevant and poignant the points made.

Came expecting a long, rambling disjointed post whose format and structure makes my eyes bleed, rendering arguments invalid. Was not disappointed.
im sorry i didnt realise i was in an english lesson writing a paragraph to please your eyes.
And more’s the pity, but apology accepted.
Wait wait wait:
So what you all are saying is if I want 12 Ascended pieces of gear with infusions, I need to come up with:
To craft 12 Ascended items:
3000 tier 6 fine crafting material
12 vials of condensed mist essence
600 globs of ectoplasm
288 skill pointsTo infuse 12 Ascended items:
3000 Passion Fruits
1200 Vicious Claws
12 Eldritch Scrolls = 600 skill points
240 Mystic Coins = 240 daily achievementsSeriously? I mean, seriously? To get better gear I need to do this?
I didn’t mind the Obsidian Armor grind in GW1 – the stats were IDENTICAL to the cheap stuff you could get from the merchant. But THIS? For gear with HIGHER STATS?
Who are you people who designed this, and what have you done with ArenaNet?
Don’t be silly. You are supposed to buy gems, turn it into gold and buy those materials. Either on the TP or to pay others to run you for the Bind on Acquire tems. But the mst important thing is that your cash becomes ArenaNet’s cash.
I’m pretty sure the janitor at ArenaNet is using a rotor rooter to remove the manifesto from the toilet after the Nexon mole hired as the monetization expert used it to wipe her behind.

They’re going to go the simple route.
Cash for gems for gold.
Gold can be use to pay forbitems for those grindy Ascended recipes. Gold can be used to pay people to pull you through obviously gated content. Gold can be used for just about anything.
The gem for gold thing is entirely about the biggest reward for the least effort. Why make new content for free? Why not put in some restrictions that be circumvented easily enough wih enough coin?
Bugged content? This surprises…. No one!
This is something that existed prior to ascended gear, and was something that we saw happen all the time in GW1, even without any sort of gear progression. Some players, typically people who play the game a lot, tend to only want to play with other players that play like them. They require some sort of proof to get into their party, whether it be displaying your Lightbringer Title, equipping or linking some type of gear, or using some other method of showing that you have already done and are experienced with the content. While ascended gear might be the new excuse, this behavior happens regardless.
While this is not really something that we want to encourage, players do have the choice to play the game in the way they want. We can’t force those players to be all-inclusive in who they invite to the parties they create, and to be honest, doing so would probably make people even more unhappy than they are now, and lead to a lot of undesirable behavior.
Because developers blaming the players always ends up well. Grow a pair why don’t you.
He does have a point about players inventing unneeded requirements, like requiring exotic armor to join a dungeon group. But there is a huge difference between players demanding exotic gear, and Anet adding in the Ascended gear that is actually required by the game mechanics. Anet is giving these players validation in their requirements, and intentionally making the gear difficult to obtain compared to exotics.
Not to mention the increased stats from Infused gear. Imagine the stat gains on a fully Infused armor set. It’ll be. Mandatory for PUGs so they can faceroll.
I might be getting it confused. But I think without Infusions (which have non-Agony stats on them) un-Infused Ascended gear is a straight 20% stat markup over Exotic/Legendary gear. That might be the Infused gear though.
Guys, the OP isn’t exactly complaining about the game or recent changes, but expressing regret over the dramatic change in attitude in the General Forums over the last weekend.
He has a credible point. Whatever you might think about Ascended armor, the forums have been objectively nastier and more hostile lately, much more argumentative and far less constructive.
The OP is talking about how the forum community went from relatively civil to almost exclusively flooded with a front page of angry, baffled or hostile threads. Frankly I agree. It’s depressing.
That’s ultimately on Anet’s head. They are allowing speculation and debate to rule the forums. Their only communications have been largely unsatisfying and their community moderation is as draconian as SWTOR was back when I quit it in March.
Since Whiteside’s post, only Mcleod has replied and his words are summed thusly:
We don’t want to encourage exclusion based on gear, but we have no way of controlling how players react to content.
We won’t tell you why Ascended and Infusions raises the ceiling on max stats, but here, let me point you to Chris Whiteside’s post about the “no treadmill.”
Unsatisfying responses, leaving the community to duke it out amonst themselves.
I know, and I definitely see where you’re coming from. I want to make it clear that I’m not ascribing blame or pointing fingers on the source of all this negativity, just thinking about the long-term effects of having such a hostile forum at all.
I think it’s fair to say that it would be in everyone’s best interest if we somehow managed to calm things down, one way or another, with either the players who are dissatisfied coming to terms with the way things are and moving on, or ArenaNet opening up dialogue that ends up placating a lot of our concerns.
One way or another, having a hostile forum community sucks. I think we can all agree on that. Most of us anyway.
Ultimately it is on Anet. People need to keep the pressure up, because only pressure is going to affect them. This lack of communication should have a negative impact. If it doesn’t then it just trains Anet to ignore the players. Who cares so long as the cash shop keeps providing a steady revenue source? That source need to be impacted negatively in order to force them to get their act together.

Also they have said multiple times that ascended will be available via other means(such as WvW and crafting). They just haven’t released it yet.
So do you think we’ll be able to get them with Badges of Honor or Valor in 3-6 months?
They said max stat gear was in game(exotics). They NEVER said that exotics were going to always be top slot gear.
You don’t really think that 3 months after the game came out they looked at each other one weekend and said “Let’s code a new tier of equipment so all the gear progression players can be happy” do you? Do you know how much coding it takes to correctly implement a new tier of equipment? Do you honestly think they haven’t been coding this since the game launched and just holding it back until they were ready to release it?
What I’m thinking is they released it earlier than they expected to because of the complaints; but it was always coming.
Yes, they did. Do you even know what horizontal progression is?
How is Ascended gear horizontal progression?
The TLDR of the past week is;
=>Vocal minority locusts QQ they have nothing to do, even though they probably haven’t done most of the content yet anyway.
=> Anet introduces the Ascended gear treadmill to shut them up.
=> Vocal majority, also the legit fans of the game go WTF?!?!
=> Legit fans explain in detail why it’s a bad idea, what’s wrong with it, and what they could have done instead of adding grind.
=> Apologists don’t understand the consequences, nor the other group’s viewpoint, and tell the legit fans to leave the game.
=> So the legit fans leave when Anet makes no attempt to respond to the PR disaster.
And now there’s a 50 / 50 chance this will go down as one of the biggest mistakes in the history of gaming. Well, I think anyway.
I can picture John Smedley going “Oh dear” in a stuttering Piglet fashion. Mind you, YEARS later, Smedley admits that the Star Wars Galaxies NGE was a bad idea and apologized. Damage was done, however. The game never recovered, and only the IP kept it alive.
…How strong do you think your IP is, Anet, compared to Star Wars?
They won’t answer you. This is a thinly veiled attempt to install gating. Their Nexon overlords will see users buying gems for gold to pay content locusts for an E-ticket to Ascended gear as a win. Why do you think there has been so few additions to the cash shop?
All I can say is both my guildie and myself have excluded the file/folders from MSE’s domain, and we haven’t been DC’d as far as I know. Would be interested in more data from others.
Most complaints stem from Ascended equipment being the strongest, which isnt true.
They can only be upgraded via infusion, which only gives you Agony resistance, meaning no runes and sigils.
The main problem would be if they made it mandatory for future content, but for
now it is mostly fine, other then being needed for really high Fotm difficulties.
Infusions have stats. The higher rarieties most certainly. It’s not just Agony.

Um, you do realize you are encouraging it? How intellectually dishonest.
Like Anet is going to do any lawyering over a less than 500 bucks.
I find it rather funny that people whine and moan about hitting 80 and not having anything to do, no gear progression, no progressive dungeons, etc. So ArenaNet decides to add ONE DUNGEON for these people that wanted to pursue that, and now people piss and moan that they added content for a group of people that were lacking that content. What’s even funnier is the fact that the people complaining act like the other 99% of the game no longer exists because of one dungeon.
Get over it people. It’s one dungeon. There are plenty of groups you can get into to do it without being on dungeon level 7+. Tons. I stand in Lion’s arch for 10 minutes and I see 20+ calls for LFG Level 1-3.
Lastly, you act like there won’t be other methods for acquiring Ascended gear. If I know ArenaNet, there is never just ‘one way’ to accomplish goals in GW2. While FotM might be the only way to get Ascended gear currently, I have faith that it will be expanded upon and new methods will be introduced as time progresses. For example, mystic forge, random chests, events, renown, etc.
The dungeon literally JUST came out. Stop having a panic attack and give things time to settle before you start screaming the sky is falling.
Oh, and btw? Did you check stats on Ascended gear? It’s not that big of a gap to complain about. +2 over the stats of an 80 exotic? Not to mention that infusion ONLY effects Agony, so it’s not like it’s some super powerful godly item with ultimate usefulness UNLESS you are fighting against enemies that cause agony.
Lets check out these stat changes. First we will look at ascended vs exotic then exotic vs rare. So to start when you compair (http://www.gw2db.com/items/71372-bagh-nakh) to (http://www.gw2db.com/items/58008-ruby-orichalcum-ring) and (http://www.gw2db.com/items/26447-exquisite-beryl-jewel-s). Then you compair (http://www.gw2db.com/items/58008-ruby-orichalcum-ring) and (http://www.gw2db.com/items/26447-exquisite-beryl-jewel-s) to (http://www.gw2db.com/items/58001-ruby-mithril-ring) and (http://www.gw2db.com/items/26410-beryl-orb-s) you see that from exotic to ascended its a difference of +7, +5, +3, +3, +1%, +1% which is a total of 18 point stat boost with a 2% boost to crit damage. Where as from rare to exotic its a +8, +6, +5, +1, +1% which is a total of a 20 point stat boost with a 1% crit damage boost. This is going to be basically the same difference you see from rare to exotic which is a noticeable difference.
This is the problem with the new tier. Increasing percentages. Even WoW refused to do that in vanilla. Remember that blue ring with 2% to crit? The next upgrade never came until Naxrammas 60. And now they’re inflating percentage based stats after three months? That’ll get out of hand quick.
Normal player.. tons of hours..
I have a wife, kids and a job.. could not log in until tonight does to my daughter having her confirmation.. you know REAL life..
My 80 mesmer could not get a group for the new dungeon.. Everyone had to be level 7 or some odd crap to do it….
72 hours out of the loop and ZERO chance to get a group? This game talked about no grinding and you can’t take three days off at max level and not land a group now??
Hey, you clearly have money. Man up and buy some gems, turn them into gold and pay someone to drag your carebear self through. That way Anet can take its cut.
/s
If you can get a refund, get it. If not, don’t quit. All that does is make them run less hardware and save money. No, instead you need to be a leech. You need to make them pay money to support you, the players who won’t open up their wallets for this kittenpoop. They can’t target players who refuse to use the cash shop. The outcry from their cash cows would be bad, as it shows the callous moneygrubbing side that is taking over. No just login, force them to spend electricity and hardware to support you.
Sadly I was off my projection on its downgrade by 3 months. I underestimated the power of the IP and juvenile lure of laser swords.
Open MSE (should be in your Start Menu, top level on Win 7) as Microsoft Security Essentials.
Go to the settings tab.
Guild Wars 2 should be installed under C:\Program Files\Guild Wars 2 or C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2 (latter part is for 64-bit Windows)
For those experiencing random disconnects from “Incorrect Password” one possible issue is that MSE (Microsft Security Essentials) is interfering with the functioning of gw2.exe.
You need to add process and location exceptions to MSE with the Guild Wars 2 folder and gw2.exe.
I had this problem after a system rebuild and decided to use MSE in combination with AVG Free. I was using AVG Free by itself prior. Another guild mate of mine also had the issue and was solely using MSE.
Hope this helps.
Maz
Solving your problems because Anet can’t be bothered.
A golem named BUY-4373, an NPC named Subdirector Blingg, and a jumping puzzle named Under New Management.
I’m sorry, but those references are too coincidental to just be funny. Thanks for letting us now, ANet.
The acronym for the new dungeon is Flavor of the Month
You play but give them no money.
It costs them money to maintain those servers.
10,000 posts (not including those that were removed) on a single topic concerning the game (whether for or against) and we’ve had 2 posts from the devs.
1 which started the whole issue, and 1 over 3 days ago which clarified nothing.
Now the patch has been implemented, we have seen the issues first-hand and still nothing. How much longer can they dig their heads in the sand and wish this would go away?
Granted, they do have their hands full with patch full of blocking bugs that is intended to entice new players.
Funny enough, that is how EA/Bioware were acting not even a year ago. Guess what happened there?
The issue is a bug caused by the change to Cloak and Dagger. It recieved a 33% damage nerf, but only in PvP. If you look in your weapon skills UI, you will notice TWO Cloak and Dagger skills. One does less damage than the other. I believe this is an unintended side effect for creating two rulesets for PvP.
