Goal: To have one character of every race, gender, and armor class combination at level 80.
Current progress: Human 4/6 | Charr 1/6 | Norn 1/6 | Sylvari 1/6 | Asura 1/6 | Total: 8/30

Sounds good to me. Anything to actually help my alting.

I don’t know if you guys know this, but the black lion chests can also give a chance at keys. I opened 5 chests in a row from one key. Same thing happened with a friend of mine, he kept getting keys out of his chests
I’ve had this happen several times. Longest run I had was a three key combo. So, I got 4 chests opened up off of just one key.
That’s only happened to me once, though. Typically, I tend not to be that lucky.
Honestly, though, nothing in any of the chests really interested me to begin with.
Yeah, I was thinking that it might, but I’ve never legitimately tested it. I mean, sometimes weapons look so small in some character’s hands, but so large in others. I wasn’t sure if that was just the weapon model causing the difference, height, or both.
Hmmmm. There are some races that don’t really seem to fit some professions, but I really think that it’s only certain archetypes, weapons, or builds within each profession that don’t really fit the race, not as much the profession as a whole.
For example:
Charr: I don’t think the majority of Guardian weapons would fit them. Namely, Staff, Scepter, and Focus. They seem to have too much of a magical bend to them that doesn’t really work for the Charr. Bows also seem like they wouldn’t fit the Charr that well, since their industrial nature seems like it would direct them more towards firearms than bows.
Charr thieves, though, I can see working simply because the profession covers several archetypes. It covers acrobatic fighters, pickpocketers, and assassins. I can definitely see the Charr going the more Assassin bit. Ever see a jungle cat stalking prey in the wild? I’m pretty sure Charr could pull it off.
Asura: Pretty much anything with a Warrior-esque bend to it doesn’t really seem to fit the Asura. They seem too magically/technically inclined to really legitimately charge into a battle with a Greatsword. Guardian I could see working, though, since the Staff, Scepter, Focus, and Torch weapons all fit the Asura pretty well.
Human: Yeah, humans are everything, always.
Norn: Pretty much everything but Engineer and possibly Mesmer fit. With the way they revere the mists and spirits and such, as well as being warriors, the magic classes just seem to work. Thieves actually work well with them ‘cause Norns are also hunters, so being stealthy is something that they’re completely capable of. Not so much pickpocketing and such, but sneaking up on prey shouldn’t be a big deal for them.
Sylvari: I can actually see them being pretty much everything, also, kind of like Humans. Engineer doesn’t seem to fit well at first, but if you look at all of the Alchemical stuff that Engineers get, having plant knowledge actually seems to fit that pretty well. I wouldn’t put it past seeing a Sylvari engineer toting around an Elixer gun and chucking potions everywhere. Seems more their style.
Heya.
I’ve seen this asked around a few times but never really got a clear answer and the wiki doesn’t help much.
I know that race definitely affects the size of something’s weapon.
What I’m curious about is if the height slider affects it also? Like, will the smallest human have a smaller greatsword than the tallest human? Or will they have the same sized greatsword?
I’m curious about this ‘cause I wanted my character to carry around a ridiculously large greatsword. So, I made a Norn and I maxed out his height. The greatswords I’ve come across so far, though, have seemed pretty small in comparison to him, while other, smaller Norn characters seem to have much bigger greatswords.
So, I’m wondering if to get the effect I wanted if I should’ve made a really small Norn, so that he’d be carrying a normal sized Norn greatsword which would appear much larger on him in scale?
The main difference between under water and on land is simply that under water there is no arc in the grenade trajectory. Things run at you and grenades fly directly into them. Meanwhile on land, when you toss a grenade, it goes into an arc (depending on distance to target) which wouldn’t be changed by this. This means grenades would still be easily avoidable as they are now only without the incessant button mashing.
This. You could easily circle strafe away from the grenades. We don’t need HOMING grenades, just ones that make it so you’re not constantly smashing the 1 keys.
Yeah, I’ve noticed that, too.
In all honesty, the easiest place I’ve found to actually just run around, explore, and not really worry about something trying to kill me every few seconds, is inside WvW. I’ve spent a good amount of time just running around there chilling, ‘cause the wildlife is pretty sparse and as long as you’re not nearby one of the main keeps that everyone’s trying to capture, you hardly even see other players.
Everywhere else, I kind of have your same experience. Outside of the major cities, I tend to not even notice the scenery that I’m running through ‘cause I’ve got my camera trained behind me as I’m bobbing and weaving through mobs with swiftness on.
Yeah, it threw me off at first. I wasn’t sure if it was automatic or if someone was going into threads and changing them to spontaneously chosen cute words.
That’s kitten brilliant!
Just curious, I’ve been seeing a lot of random kitten references pop up in the forums. Is that just the friendly neighborhood moderator using kittens to replace less fun and furry words on the forums? Or maybe an inbuilt censor with a fondness for felines?
Or is everyone just really into kittens lately?
For example from other posts I just read:
“Tell him to kitten” and “Learn to play kitten.”
Unless kitten is a new action of some sort? Like planking?
I thought it was kind of weird that people were referring to each other with kitten, too. It actually comes off sounding rather piratey to me.
Anyone know for sure? Am I just completely missing some new internet trend? O.O
Honestly, levels in GW2 are about as useful as levels in, say, Call of Duty. It’s really just an indicator of how long you’ve been in the game, ’cause besides a few unlocks, everything kind of stays static.
I’m not 100% sure if I like it or not. Leveling has always been a source of enjoyment for me and I just don’t really get the same kick out of it here as I do in other games. Then again, it makes the game accessible to pretty much everybody.
It’s all got a real arcadey feel to it. Everything is just pick up and go. Which is nice when you don’t have a lot of time, actually, but still kind of ruins the whole progression aspect.
I’ve never really been into ‘end game’ stuff, though, so I think my biggest problem is that the whole game is basically end game. Static levels, static skills, with only gear changing anything (besides player skill, of course). Sounds a lot like typical end game progression to me.
I’ll have to post a picture of mine once I get home. I could not for the life of me come up with a Sylvari design I liked. I eventually stumbled on one when I decided to stop trying to make her look like a human. Now she’s a light purple with dark blue ‘hair’ and pure black eyes. The distinctive ‘alieness’ of it all actually has made her pretty appealing.
Honestly, though, Sylvari are still my least favorite race. Or, more appropriately, the least aesthetically pleasing to me. It used to be Asura, but then I made one of the most adorable Asura in the universe and have thusly changed my opinion.
Depends what you want to do. Sword+Horn seems more support oriented. I like the dynamics of Sword, ’cause of the built in evades and closers, but I think most support oriented build tend to use Axe+Horn for buffing/debuffing then switch to something else.
Ah, alright. Think I’ll just go the alt route, then. I was kind of planning on that already, but I figured I’d check if there was anything beneficial about just having it on one character, since there aren’t many MMOs that allow that.
Thanks!
Hmmmm. My highest character at the moment is an Engineer, ‘cause they seemed very flexible with all of their kits. I’m currently running around with an Elixer Gun, Bombs, the Healing Turret, and Elixer R. I haven’t gotten the elite skill yet, but Supply Crates really seemed like the only viable option. I’m looking forward to getting the ‘Bombs Heal’ skill, but that won’t be for a looooong while yet.
The other character I’ve been using quite often is the Elementalist, actually. She’s not very high at the moment, though. I’ve mostly just been trying to get all of her weapon skills to see what works best, since she has a ton to choose from. She seemed to have some pretty straightforward support options, though, what with the heals and auras and such. It won’t be until much higher levels that she gets all of her goodies also, though. Kind of seems like the game wants you to focus more on damage until you reach higher levels.
Ranger seemed like it’d have some pretty straightforward support with a Spirit build. Seemed like Spirits along with the fast auto attack of a Short Bow would trigger conditions pretty regular, along with buffing the rest of the party.
Guardians seemed the most support oriented, since they have a ton of buffs and heals. I haven’t gotten a chance to try them out much yet, though.
I think I’m mostly curious about what I can do with the other four classes. I’ll have to look deeper at Necro, now, since they just seemed like a minion class at first, but I wasn’t aware of the other options.
Anyone know a good way to make a support or Crowd Control focused character for Mesmer, Necro, Thief, or Warrior? Anything to get away from 100% damage focused all the time? I know I’ll have to have some sort of damage capability to contribute, I’d just prefer to have something else mixed in there, too.
Oh, also, this is mostly for PvE. I mean, I play support in PvP, too, but I figure the builds would be pretty different between them and I’m mostly worried about PvE at the moment.
- I can confirm, that you do indeed get 3 Basic Transmutation Stones every time you get 100% completion on any map.
Are those Transmutation Stones character bound? ‘Cause it doesn’t seem like it would be too terribly onerous to just make an alt to 100% one of the starting cities when you need a Transmutation. Takes hardly any time at all, really.
Heya.
So, I recently discovered that you can actually have all of the crafts maxed out on one character, with just the slight inconvenience of having to pay some silver to switch back and forth between your professions.
What I’m curious about is if it’s more beneficial to have all of the crafts on one character and just have them be the jack of all trades crafter, or if it makes sense to spread the crafting between alts? Not taking into account the XP gain from it for leveling said alts.
Or, rather, is it a big enough pain having to switch between the different crafting professions while crafting to warrant making alts for the other crafts?
Heya. So, I’ve been messing around with characters for a little bit (invested in 3 more character slots to have all the professions) and I’m wondering now which professions are the most support oriented ones?
So far, I’ve heard things about Engineers, Guardians, and Ranger support builds. Trying to figure out if every class has some sort of support oriented build or tree it can work towards?
To give some background, I’ve been a healer in every single MMO I’ve played for the last 10+ years, so it’s taking some getting used to not being a healer here. I’ve always hated just pure DPS, though, so I’m trying to find a way to make pure support oriented builds for each of the professions. Or high CC builds, since I enjoy that as well. I haven’t really seen a lot of big options for CC oriented builds, though, so if someone has a good profession they can point me to for that, it would be appreciated as well.
Thanks!
