Halloween release time.

Haha, I think you’re overthinking it. It starts the 22nd and the first phase of the Halloween event takes place on the 26th, so you’ve got plenty of time. No need to rush it the instant it becomes available.

Get some sleep, dude! :P

Seriously, though, I wouldn’t be surprised if it hit somewhere between midnight and 2am PST. It also might take some time to actually get running, though, since it’s a content patch as well. So the servers might not even be up for a few hours after the patch.

“Ho and below! The windmill king wishes to change a lightbulb! Bring out the lightbulb!!!”

Windmill King finds a fork.

“Four soothes! You have met your match, lightbulb!”

Windmill Kings sticks the fork into the light socket, gets shocked and falls to the floor

“You bewitched me! You evil magpie! You’re not a lightbulb!”

Honestly, I don’t think they designed the game with soloing in mind. You can solo a lot of content, but they put quite a lot of effort into making it so that there really isn’t a reason to not be in a party, or at least with/around other players.

My typical playtimes are anywhere between midnight and 8am PST. So, pretty kitten dead all the time.

You know what I did? I found a guild called “Tarnished Coast Night Owls” which consists of players that play primarily during that time. Now I’m never alone during those times.

Is it still hard to solo DEs when everything’s dead at night? Yeah, but I can usually find a guildmate on around that time that doesn’t mind running around with me.

My advice? Find a guild with similar play hours, or swap to a different server that has different prime time hours. There’s a reason that server swaps are allowed every 24 hours, and it’s not just to facilitate WVWers server hopping to the winning team.

I mean, if all you’re really worried about is having players available for events that you’re soloing, then it doesn’t particularly matter which server you’re on.

What profession best suits Charr?

in Charr

Posted by: MikeRocks.9243

MikeRocks.9243

If you want your Charr to look like a Defensive Lineman in the NFL, definitely go for the heavy armor and get you some MASSIVE shoulders. Heavy armor actually tends to look pretty good on Charr.

I’ve heard grumblings that the leather armor is pretty lackluster on the Charr.

I’m a fan of the Tier 1 cultural robes mixed with the Tier 3 culture helm for light armored Charr, but those are my personal opinions.

If it means anything to you, I definitely see many more Warrior and Engineer Charr than any other Charr.

Charr physically stronger than Norn?

in Charr

Posted by: MikeRocks.9243

MikeRocks.9243

i remember hearing this thing about Charr/Norn that back when Ascalonians drove Charr out, they tried to expand north but were stopped by Norn. This somehow suggests Norn individual is equal to Charr individual, but Norn (plural) would fall if whole collective legion, needless to say about whole Charr, war force would focus on them. I heard/red this long time ago, so i don’t remember anymore where i found this info.

I think this is pretty much correct.

The ‘average’ Norn would be equal to or stronger than the ‘average’ Charr, so individually the Norn would push them back. The Norn don’t have much in the way of organization, though, so a strike by the whole of the Charr nation would probably crush the Norn. That is, if they could ever find a way to work together without all of the infighting.

At the moment, though, they both kind of have a mutual respect for each other, so I’m not sure that the Charr would go full on attack on the Norn anyway.

Each circumstance would be different, though, since a large Charr vs. a small Norn would be a very different fight than the other way around.

In general, it’s safe to say that they’re evenly matched.

Then again, through the game mechanics, technically EVERYONE is evenly matched, to the point where if the largest Charr/Norn and the smallest Asura got into a fist fight, it would be a toss up on who would win.

Buying more gems should lower the unit cost, no?

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: MikeRocks.9243

MikeRocks.9243

I think that their theory behind this was to make gems a sort of hard currency where you always knew what their value was.

Because you’re able to trade in game gold for Gems, you need a set real world value for the gems so that you know exactly what you’re getting for the exchange price.

For instance, someone who buys 800 gems for 4 gold knows that he just bought $10 worth of gems using in game currency. If those 800 gems came from someone who bought gems in bulk and got a discount, the value he’s getting will actually end up being less due to the discount.

Or something like that.

Basically, the gems have to have a set value in order for the currency exchange to function the way that ANET intended it to. Especially since coding in discounted gem prices into their magical Gem→Gold price calculator thingy would probably be a pain.

Unforgettable...

I actually enjoy a lot of the Skritt dialogue!

I have to attribute this to the ‘Escort Rikkiti’ questline, as Rikkiti was the first Skritt that made me appreciate them as more than just pilfering rats (it’s what I get for playing a human first).

I just get a kick out of pretty much everything that Rikkiti said/did during that quest. Especially the interaction with the Deputy Asura.

“Deputy, Deputy!”
“Yes, what is it Rikkiti?”
“Sheriff want shinies back. Rikkiti get shinies! Teach Hyleks stealing bad.”
“And did our ineffectual sheriff offer any thoughts on how precisely we might accomplish that?”
“Yes… no… what?”
“(sigh) Sheriff say how we get shinies back?”
“Oooh! Deputy talk like Rikkiti stupid! Rikkiti not stupid!”
“….”
“Sheriff not say how we get shinies back!”

Or, later on in the quest:

“Rikkiti! Procure the purloined goods!”
“Get shinies?!”
“Yes, yes, get shinies.”
“Shi-hi-hinyyy!”
Followed by that crazy adorable Skritt laugh.

Skrittsburg was pretty clever to find, also. I liked the random in love Skritt that didn’t quite know what to do about it.

I also enjoyed literally falling into my first jumping puzzle in Caledon Forest. I hadn’t done a jumping puzzle at all at that point and I was backing up away from some mobs, dodge rolled backwards, and literally fell into a hidden cave. Was pretty memorable for me.

As for memorable battles, that actually involved Skritt, too. I was playing as an Asura Mesmer and got to that event where you have to stop Skritt from dismantling a portal. I was the only one at that event and was getting swarmed simultaneously stopping runaway Skritt as well as defending against attacking Skritt. I was swapping like mad between Staff and Dual Blades using everything I had to hold them back. I lasted quite awhile actually, but eventually failed the event. I survived, though, and it was the first battle that actually made me feel like I had to use everything in my arsenal to get through. Which is weird, since it was just a low level encounter with Skritt. >.>

[WvW] Commander Chat Function

in Suggestions

Posted by: MikeRocks.9243

MikeRocks.9243

I was just having a discussion in the WvW boards and a thought occured to me.

One of the purposes of Three Faction PvP is supposed to make it so that things stay more or less balanced, since if one Faction gets too powerful, the other two are supposed to gang up on the winning Faction to bring them back down. More often than not, though, this doesn’t happen and the winning faction just gets further and further ahead while the 1st and 2nd place factions pick on the third for easy points.

I think one way of alleviating this would be to open up a line of communication with the other servers in order to plot against against each other.

Hence, having a specialized chat channel specifically for those with the Commander title. First, this would allow communication with the other servers so that they can actually plan and coordinate attacks against the bigger enemy. Second, it gives another function to the Commander title, making it more worthwhile.

It also opens the door for all sorts of backdoor politicking and subterfuge, adding another layer to WvW.

Names could still be kept anonymous. Just censor the name to ‘Tarnished Coast Commander 1’ or ‘Crystal Desert Commander 3’ or some such.

Thoughts?

GW2 proves it: tri-faction pvp isn't the answer

in WvW

Posted by: MikeRocks.9243

MikeRocks.9243

A three faction system works great in theory. It allows the two losing factions to gang up on the winning faction and act as a balancing system. In practice, this never happens in WvW.

Another problem is lack of practical lines of communication. It’s hard to stage a joint attack against the winning faction when you can’t express your intentions or make any sort of plans with the other losing faction.

Personally, I think it would be great if they added a WvW ‘Commander Chat’ function that came with the Commander Title. A sort of specialized channel where Commanders could plot and scheme with the other faction’s commanders. I think it would add a fun new layer to WvW, what with the possible subterfuge and backstabbing, while also giving more purpose to the Commander title.

On top of other fixes, you know?

I have to go with Ranger.

I’ve been leveling a traps Ranger with Longbow/Greatsword and I’ve never leveled off of DEs so quickly.

Add the healing well and the regen signet and you’re practically unstoppable. I usually end up being the one ‘tanking’ Champion mobs in events.

I’m not level 80 yet, so it could all change here shortly, but I’ve had a much easier time with the Ranger than any other class so far.

For pure enjoyment, though, gotta go with Engineer. I run with four kits and love the feeling of having 32-ish skills at my fingertips (weapon+kit+toolbet+kit refinement skills), most of which are AoEs of some sort.

I’d actually rather that there were only like 3-4 waypoints per zone, myself, rather than the 15-20. It would make the zones feel bigger.

I’d like this. Just enough waypoints to be able to get to places at a decent pace without literally being able to fast travel everywhere.

I’m fine with waypoints the way there are now, though, I just don’t find myself using them that much. Once my characters get loaded up with swiftness on 100%~ uptime, then I just run everywhere unless I’m porting across zones.

Level 15 Engineer on prologue mission

I thought they patched it so that you didn’t get XP in the prologue?

Or maybe it was just so that you could no longer get items…

Anyway, the prologue SEEMS like it’d be good to camp, since there are endless enemies that are really, really weak.

But it’s REALLY, REALLY slow. The Charr prologue got bugged for me the first time that I made one, so the Ascalon ghosts outside of the cave there spawned endlessly. I stayed there for about two hours just for the hell of it, killing ghost after ghost after ghost. I just barely made it to level 2 before I got sick of it.

I did get about 78 piles of glittering dust, 7 unknown dyes, and a bunch of random low level weapons out of the deal, though.

Of course Elona is just African themed right?

GW 2 PvE Discussion [Merged Threads]

Honestly, I only really PvE anymore when I’m in a group. I have a static group that gets together twice a week and it’s helped stave off boredom a lot.

I think one of the problems is that when soloing, most classes play pretty much exactly alike. You pick a type of damage (Condition, Crit, Power), a survival attribute (Vit, Toughness, Healing), then you find a weapon combination that works best with that combination and use it for the rest of eternity.

When grouping you can respec into new and more interesting builds, since there’re quite a few abilities and weapons that range anywhere from useless to mediocre when you’re by yourself, but shine in group play.

I think I’m going to have to pick up either WvW or sPvP in order to make things even remotely interesting again.

P.S. Don’t get me wrong, I’m enjoying the game immensely, but most of my enjoyment comes from either my friends or activities where we make our own fun (RPing), not so much the game itself anymore.

Yeah, I’ve actually noticed that you can get yourself a wide variety of looks by tweaking the sliders for the preset faces.

However, there are some things that bug me. There are times when I want a certain eye/nose/mouth shape from one face on a different face entirely, but it won’t let me have it. There’re also some faces where the sliders adjust unexpected things and don’t allow me to actually adjust the setting that it should adjust (i.e. The bottom left female human default face’s iris slider. It doesn’t adjust the iris, it adjusts the size of the entire eye, which makes for very alien proportions).

I dunno. I would’ve liked if I could pick my own nose/eye/mouth shape/eyebrows and just plop them onto a face shape, ‘cause there’re a lot of times where there’ll just be one part of the face that I really don’t like or that doesn’t mesh well with the others.

For the head slider problem, I’ve found that a useful way to get the proportions right is to hit the back button (only once) when you think you’re done customizing. This brings you back to the Profession selection screen and shows what your newly created character will look like in some of the higher tiered armor. If your head’s too small/large, it usually shows up a lot better there for some reason. From there, you can just hit the next button again to get back to your character. Just don’t pick another profession or it’ll reset all of your customization.

I wouldn’t mind being able to use a utility skill there, but I don’t think it needs a shorter recharge, since that might open some exploit.

Think he meant that he prefers abilities that have a shorter recharge (i.e. the normal utility skills) rather than more ‘powerful’ skills with really long recharges (the elite skills), not that he thinks utility skills in an elite slot should have shorter recharge times ‘cause they’re in the elite slot.

Actually, this would open up a lot of options for me on a lot of my builds. I’ve found the elite skills rather lackluster, so I would love having another utility skill there instead.

Another Experiment into DR (Karma) Results Inside

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: MikeRocks.9243

MikeRocks.9243

A minor personal anecdote.

I started a new character to see the last line of the Norn personal story that I hadn’t completed yet, so I was chaining DEs trying to level him quickly. In Wayfarer foothills, I noticed that the Bunny/Jackalope/Yeti event chain almost always ran immediately after the Gareth Bear event chain. As soon as one chain finished, the other started. So, I jumped back and forth between the two so I could hammer out some quick levels. On my fourth time through the chain, I noticed that all of the rewards for completing the event got sharply cut in half (probably not exactly in half, but they had taken a noticeable dive). On the fifth time they’d dropped to nearly nothing (I got, like, 9 experience, 3 karma, and a few copper). So, I figured that I hit the DR and left.

I didn’t think much of it at the time, so I didn’t get specific numbers or anything. I figure DR is the only thing it could’ve been, though, ‘cause my rewards dropped significantly. I didn’t even bother to check loot and such ’cause I was just there for experience.

Let us pick sPVP at Character Select

I agree with the armor bit. Would be nice to have a toggle to show PvP gear as opposed to PvE gear, since I have several characters more or less permanently trapped in ‘harlot’ armor, since I use them primarily for PvP. Not too big a deal, since it’s only me looking at it, but it’s still a little disheartening.

Having ‘Heart of the Mists’ at the character select screen would probably make more sense, since you could pick your character, then load them up straight into PvP from there. Wouldn’t be as helpful having it replace ‘Play’ since not everyone only uses one character for PvP. Otherwise, I totally agree with it.

Personally, I have something like 1g 50s between all of my characters. I have 8 characters, though, and I’m leveling each of them 10 levels at a time, with my highest being just over 30. Soooo, definitely not the best method to make money, but I’m enjoying myself.

Honestly, I’m fine with getting rewards in GW2 for playing GW1. It’s a good way to reward loyalty in your fan base. I also don’t think those items should be sold on the market, though I personally wouldn’t be that heartbroken if they did.

The only part I had a problem with is attaching achievements in GW2 that are reliant on playing GW1. You didn’t achieve anything in THIS game by playing THAT game. It doesn’t make sense to have achievements for it. Just bugs me since I’m a bit of an achievement kitten.

Other than that, have at the pets and titles and such. If I need to take a break from GW2, I’ll probably pick up GW1 and play it for a bit to get some of the extras. It’s not really detracting away from my enjoyment at all.

In the end, locking content in GW2 is just a gimmick to continue to make money off of GW1. The completionists like myself are going to end up picking up the original game in order to get everything in GW2. Sucks to have things that are completely reliant on another game in order to get, but that’s marketing for you. And, hey, it works.

I’m pretty positive Tengu and Koda will be in there eventually. What I’m mostly curious about is what customization options they’d have available. Pretty much every Tengu/Koda I’ve seen so far has looked pretty much the same. I mean, at least the Tengu get different coloring. Every Koda I see might as well have been copy/pasted.

I could see Hylek/Heket possibly becoming playable, also, though that might be more of a stretch. Their description kind of makes them seem like a more nomadic, tribal version of the Charr, or perhaps Charr mixed with Norn. I can always hope. I had a Froglok Wizard in Everquest YEARS ago and I’ve been wanting to get my froggy on ever since then.

Resurrecting downed people gets me killed.

There ARE abilities which protect you while rezzing. You just have to actively select them on your bar/trait for them in order for them to be effective, but they’re there. Things like Mirrored Feedback, Veil of Invisibility, or even things like Mirror Images, which can make clones to distract the baddies while you rez. Illusion of Life is also good for those moments when the baddie does an AoE which kills, like, 7 people immediately around him. It doesn’t straight out rez them, but as long as they can find something small to kill, they can stay alive. Worst case scenario is they just get downed again, but hopefully someplace further from the action where they can heal themselves up at.

For boss fights, if someone straight out dies, usually it’s better just to let the travel to the nearest waypoint rather than rezzing them, since it’ll usually get them back in the fight quicker. Especially for things like the Fire Elemental. If the fight moves away from the area they died in, though, then feel free to resurrect. It’s just usually not a good idea to do it right in the thick of things.

Personally? I think I’d run as a Mesmer or Elementalist if I had a Warrior buddy. Mesmer ’cause, well, I just like Mesmer. They can be in your face melee while your clones and phantoms run as distractions to keep enemies off your backs. You can also cause all sorts of havoc with staff, which can put all sorts of buffs on you via Chaos Storm. You can also make it so your shatters heal, so you always have that.

Elementalist gets a ton of support abilities. Plus, tons of combo fields, which a Dual Axe Warrior can put to good effect.

Honestly, you can’t really go wrong with any class combo. I think your personal set ups need to mesh more than your classes do. Like, don’t do a condition build if your Warrior buddy is setting up a condition build, ‘cause Warriors can hit the bleed cap pretty easily and quickly, which limits what you can do. So, don’t run a bleed Warrior and a Necro at the same time, or you won’t be as effective.

Well, I saw the patch downloading, so I figured it was that. However, it would be nice if the error message they gave actually told you what was going on. At the moment it says:

“The game client is unable to gain access to the log-in server at this time. This is most commonly caused by firewall or router settings, security applications, or connecting through a campus network.”

Or, to put it simply, “Can’t connect. It’s your fault.”

A basic, “Unable to access log-in due to maintenance” message would go a long way.

Charr get a lot of problems with this too when they go Warrior. Racial skills just aren’t as good as class specific skills, which is the way they’re supposed to be, but when they mimic the class that you are, it kind of defeats the purpose of having them.

The nature of Charr names

in Charr

MikeRocks.9243

I actually named my Charr character Khan Grimweave. He was originally Kano Darktower, but Kano didn’t sound guttural enough and ‘Dark Warband’ sounded kind of weird. So I went with ‘Weave Warband,’ which I consider an Ash Legion Warband that specializes in operations planning and intelligence gathering, ‘weaving’ webs and the like. My Charr is also a tiger Charr, so Khan seemed like an appropriate name.

Unfortunately, then I discovered that the leader that’s in control of all of the warbands is call the ‘Khan-Ur.’ So, I accidentally named my character the equivalent of ‘King’ or ‘Prince’ or maybe ‘General/Admiral.’

Which works, I guess. I’m going to make a point of having him get picked on in his youth because of it.

Thief support?

in Thief

Posted by: MikeRocks.9243

MikeRocks.9243

Hmmmm. Yeah, I’ll have to mess around with it some. I think I was overestimating the stealing boons (I never found any hard numbers on them) and underestimating the usefulness of combo fields, but I’ve been recently putting fields to really good use on my Staff/Well Necro and figuring out the ins and outs of it, so I’ll definitely have to look more into that, since there are plenty of fields/finishers to choose from in thief.

I’m still curious about the second part of the question, though. Would a supporty type thief even really be wanted? Or are people with thieves in the group more looking for them to just throw out a bunch of damage?

Is there any way to create some type of support build for the thief?

The only thing I’m coming up with is speccing into Trickery for Bountiful Theft and Thrill of the Crime, then going deep into Shadow Arts for Venomous Auras. Then grab some Venoms and Shadow Refuge.

Is that about all I can do? Is there something more effective? Would a party even benefit at all from this type of build (PvE)?

Race based achievements

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

MikeRocks.9243

Eck. Yeah. I’m looking at the Fashion Achievement on the Wiki and while it starts with ‘Obtain 1 Specialty Armor’ the next tier up is ‘X6 pieces’ and the one after that ‘X12 pieces.’

Anyone know if I can just, like, buy the specialty armor eventually and still get that particular achievement? Does it still count if you purchase the armor even if you can’t wear it? Or if it’s not even your armor class? Seems like it’d be cost effective to buy all of the Tier 1 armors for all of the armor classes rather than buying the expensive Tier 3 pieces.

I might have to test that out today. See if it adds to the achievement simply for purchase.

Race based achievements

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

MikeRocks.9243

Heya. So, I’m eventually aiming at trying to get all of the achievements in the game, simply ‘cause I think grabbing achievements is a good way to experience everything that game has to offer, as well as tracking the things that I have and haven’t accomplished.

The problem, though, is that I find myself not really enjoying the Sylvari as a race. I like seeing them around, I just don’t really like being them. However, I do still want to get the racial achievements for them before moving on.

My question is, what’s the minimum level that you’re required to have in order to get all of the achievements that are race specific? I know I need at least level 30 to get the personal story achievements, but I noticed a fashion achievement also for purchasing Sylvari specific armor. Is that armor that I can purchase at any level? Or am I going to have to level up higher than 30 to get it. Also, are there any other race specific achievements besides the Personal Story and Fashion? Once I get those, is it safe to delete the Sylvari in favor or something that I enjoy more?

Names you can never get

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

MikeRocks.9243

I don’t know why people have such an aversion to last names. I got all the names that I wanted simply because I added a last name to it.

Everybody still refers to you as the first name only, anyway. Or usually less, if it’s a long first name.

Even if you were trying to be lore friendly (Sylvari/Asura typically just having one name), it’s still easy enough to just put in a title. Like ‘Bopp the Synergist’ or ‘Riley of the Dawn’ or some such.

If you want Death Dealer, why not just use ‘Death Dealer Zed’ or something like that? Or, hell, why not ‘Death Dealer VII’ or something like that? Roman numerals makes everything cooler.

Starting to think I'm not good enough to play this game.

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: MikeRocks.9243

MikeRocks.9243

Yeah, I think you just have to find a profession that you’re comfortable with that also fits the type of role you’re trying to play. You also have to have some realistic expectations about what you’re going to encounter based on your build.

For example, I play an Engineer usually. In PvP, I’m usually specced purely for support. 1v1, I typically bite it pretty quickly. I make it hard for them, but I’m pretty terrible. 2v2 or higher I rock at, though, and hardly ever lose. I’ve gone 2v4 before with myself and a Warrior and we both walked out of that one alive, simply ‘cause I’m comfortable and effective playing a support role and the Warrior rocked at beating thing’s faces in.

Just gotta find something that fits you.

But, yeah, give Warrior a try. Rangers are a pretty easy to get the hang of, too.
