//I had to seperate this post into two parts because it’s longer than 5000 words, sorry for that, have a good read!
So the AMA on reddit yesterday revealed some unexpected “news” about the philosophy. I please to not merge this thread into the big AMA thread (which eventually will happen). So let me try to clear out my standing point first.
Don’t understand me wrong, I really like GW2. I realised the quote from O’Brain wasn’t really the case since I started playing the game. The things I really loved about GW1 was the storylines and system, not stat and lvl increase ever, pvp/pve seperation, the lore, the skillsystem, the design of the world, instances and teamplay. From start the only things found into GW2 from that was the lore, amazing world design and pvp/pve seperation. The story wasn’t a story in my opinion, more simple lined up quests with breaks not tieing up together. The skillsystem is nearly not there, I really don’t bother to plan on builds like in GW1 were I spent tons of hours having fun with that. With teamplay it’s the same case. There are cross profession combos but you don’t have to plan that your group is working well together in builds and the way approaching things. However I really liked GW2 for the features that found their way in and a lot of other thing like dynamic combat, jumping puzzles and such. But since they broke one of the last three holding between GW1 and GW2 with stating there will be stat and lvl increase with future expansion the game lost a lot of fun to play forward for me; it’s a fun killer to me. I love games, I love GW1 and I love a lot of things in GW2 but I feel very sad about the way the game scene is moving and that is the reason why I started this thread. Please understand that.
Now I will quote Mike O’Brain first, followed by two quotes of Chris Whiteside and conclusion/discussion start:
“Guild Wars 2 takes everything you love about Guild Wars 1 and puts it into a persistent world […]” – Manifesto
So now Chris Whiteside released the following two informations:
“Ascended gears are making a lot of people worry about an ever-increasing gear treadmill. Many players did not want the exotic/legendary system to change, and they don’t like ascended gears. Was this expected? Can this be something fixed in a painless way? Can it happen?
Yes the response was definitively expected. We did not intent for the information to come out this way. Going back to my previous answer the issue is that we believe in the vertical progression system we had pre launch and that the introduction of an element into the system post launch was going to cause concern but something we believe in. That is why there is no plan for new Rarity Tiers of loot but there are plans to enhance or gain items within the existing rarity design whose properties continue on a shallow power curve. This said we certainly don’t want to create a system where itemization blocks progression in the game globally and we also need to be careful of this in areas such as FotM if the primary reward isn’t available elsewhere in the game. So in short its an exciting problem but one that has been poorly communicated and handled.
And for this i take responsibility and apologies. However the future of this philosophy and the design challenges it throws up are going to lead to a pioneering world and one that we are very excited about."
“More generally, I hope we’ve been clear that GW2 is not a game with virtually no stat progression in it like GW1 was. That’s why GW2 shipped with a higher level cap, and with a hard separation between PvE and PvP. In GW1 we never advanced the level cap through four campaigns/expansions. The game design didn’t allow for it. But GW2 was designed without those restrictions, and we’ve always expected that we will someday raise the level cap in GW2.”
New Krytan was established in 1105 AE. Ventari died in 1180 AE. He carved the tablet on his deathbed.
Given Ventari wanted people to be able to read it, I think he would have gone with a universal alphabet that existed for 75 years already, rather than using whatever alphabet centaurs use.
Thank you very much for clarification!
The young Karka can swim, at least. I was personally chased by one underwater this weekend. I don’t know about the older species.
When the karka attacked lion’s arch the first one cam out of the water.
Karka = bubbles dragon minions. equivalent to destroyers/undead.
my opnion of course.Your opninion is wrong.
We’re gold that they were forced out of the water depths just as krait, quaggan, and largos were.
? Source?
There was a giant statue in the Crystal Desert, but its most likely not related at all.
At least it seems they have about the same size.
Also, the humans there aren’t seperatists but some sort of dark cult.
…is written in new krytan. Is that simply a mistake by arena net since new krytan got invented way later than the tablet was written.
The Infusions have Stats beside Agonyresistence, too. And they are only fine (blue). There comes more in the future, probably not that cheap and far better statwise. I’m getting sick with this. -.-
For those people who understand and are just as excited as I am, hope to see you in game! For those others who are in unhappy, I am sorry that you are leaving or going back to GW1.
Give us new content than…………….. I wouldn’t mind switching back to a game which ist actually unique and not some lame copy of other games before.
IMO, there’s no big story behind the disappearance of statues/displacement, it’s just to give a little easter egg for GW1 fans
The only players that would really care would also really want to look into it.^^
My stance on the Temple of Ages is that it is not in the same place that it was before. Either a sink hole appeared under the hill that the temple was on (my personal preference, and rather likely in a major flooding situation), or the hill was washed out, and the territory was sunk into the swamp by the erosion of the rock. Another possibility, one that isn’t brought up often, is that it has something to do with the weakening of the barrier between our world and the underworld.
A sink hole wouldn’t explain, why statues changed places. I think something weaken the barriers to the underworld would be a better explanation, as one of the seven reapers of grenth just says such things. Also there are a lot of underworld protals around grenth statues (in lornar’s pass as well).
Was the Kormir statue added in Guild Wars version of the Temple of Ages?
If it was not, then the implication is that it was at some point during the last 250 years.
It wasn’t so they had to build it later.
As for the melandru statue it’s likely placed there for aesthetic effect with no thought as to why it didn’t sink. The “immune to nature” explanation wouldn’t hold much weight as there is at least one (possibly more) flooded statue of melandru in the world. The Quaggan have taken a liking to it and even adopted a version of melandru based on that statue.
It’s not only that melandru’s statue isn’t sunk (it’s leaned by the way) it’s on the place of the old balthasar statue (which ist gone), too. So the humans must have replaced it, or there was a giant wave.
It makes sense that since the people of Kryta have come to fully believe the story of Kormir’s ascension in Nightfall, that they would eventually build a statue to Kormir there. Sadly with the world being stuck in time in GW1, no physical change happened that we could see with our own eyes.
That really makes sense, yes.
So we are at the point that we can’t explain, why the balthasar statue is gone, which is important, as it were a portal to the fissure of woe that is one of the places that has a very big portion of lore that spreads its roots into many places of guild wars. So I don’t think we can’t just go by and say the place is just a easter egg, because it is such an important place for the whole world.
So I spend enough time to read all blogposts, fansidepreviews (that could play already) etc.
Man this whole stuff sounds so awesome I would be byond hyped if there weren’t these new ascended items and infusion. It adds nothing challenging to the game. Not by any means. The more I read about the more I think the adding of new power items and power slots are completly useless and needless. I don’t understand why they are doing that. I think I will play the weekend because of story and such but the new gear is setting my motivation down. For me this update makes exact the oposite of what anet should doing, which is bring players to play longer. For me it only turns me into a player, that would jump on free content updates (as I won’t buy any addons with item treadmill) and leave after I’m done with it instead of being the player that plays every day as I used to be).
I can’t see where they said they’ll have better stats.
They said they’ll add more update related items, that’s it.
Do the halloween exotics have better stats? Nope.
@above
At launch we will only have ring and back items, they’re going to add the rest of the slots as they go.are you serious? did you not even read what Ascended items are? go read the release adn then come back. turn the lights on, and maybe have your browser turned to font 40. it’s in plain as day english, ascended stats are better than Exotic. no if, ands, or buts. They’ve even stated that it’s a new tier, and will make existing content easier for you! (meaning it’ll be a big increase on your character’s performance). Not to mention, it has alot of +magic find, which is the highest rated stat.
It’s the start of the never ending god kitten treadmill. they want to be like WoW for whatever reason despite having success with their original design.
And legendary stats are better then ascended which is also better then exotics? What is your point? Your already grinding for legendary… they are just adding a inbetween gear…. it won’t be the best in the game. Therefore the whole argument about a gear treadmill is totally debunked.
Legendary right now is on-par with Exotic. They are going to increase the stats of Legendary to match ascended based on these changes (when the Ascended items get patched in – not necessarily this patch).
So basically they are adding a new tier of gear after Exotic – there is no “in-between” exotic and legendary as currently exotic = legendary (in stats) and after the patch (which adds ascended weapons) ascended = legendary.
BTW, it’s complete BS, especially for the WvW community. It was said earlier – just make everyone in WvW EQUAL – same as in sPVP and they can do whatever the kittening kitten they want with PvE.
Well thats fine, I have no problem with wvwvw being like spvp…. but again what is the reward?
But pve wise, I don’t know anyone that doesn’t want to see their character grow…. no matter how small the amount is. New skins are cool but really its just more of the same after a few expansions. Same skills, same everything. Not sure how people cant consider that anymore or less boring.
Nor do I understand the argument about a gear grind….. when HELLO your doing the same thing if it were just a skin…. I mean comon folks pull your heads out!
The reward WAS playing the game and knowing you were fighting against people that were on-par with you gear wise and what it came down to was build & skill. Not ONE PVPer I’ve met WANTS to PVE to compete in PVP. It’s like the biggest outcry I always here in these games.
To Namu. The character is growing. With skins (in GW1 there were Skills, too, that’s sadly gone). Itemprogression DON’T progress you character. It’s only getting something new and throwing it into a bin for getting the next new. The things you get feeling pointless because of the knowledge that they won’t be worth it in the future. That isn’t build up your character and see him growing. I don’t even understand how poeple can set Itemprogression and Characterprogression on par.
Anyone heard of an MMO that you can put down, play some single player games for a few months and come back to still be at top stats?
I would love a game where time invested is fun with some visuals being the byproduct reward.
Maybe a day one game where the designers dont need to add bodge treadmills to keep sub’s coming in.
Also it would be awesome to have lots of epic skins to buy for either £/$ or in game currency.
Man, that would be toast-balloons.
Will keep an eye out for some type of manifesto that sets the scene for a game like this to be created over a 5 year period. They may even start a blog to reinforce their ideals…. What could go wrong…..
GW1. It’s still available for purchase here .
And GW1 is, sadly, not blessed with getting new content. Some of us played this game 7 years and saw about everything in this game. Yes I will go back but I’m realistic and say: Not for a very long time again. If there comes a new addon, I would definately buy it (ok, implies that it is a GW1 Addon, not another random mmo addon).
The problem with viable games of that type is, that they need some new content at some point and in this case there aren’t real options.I was simply posting that in reply to his sarcastic comment that a game does not exist with no vertical gear progression. When in fact one does. GW1.
Yeah, I got your post wrong. See my post more for a general information than.

The thing you’re failing to realize is for every person who hates this, there’s a person who loves it.
Starting for this thread people who hate gear grindfest are far more superior. Its more obvious because, even ppl who didnt event know a piece of GW1 came to GW2 because they said that there arent going to have any gear treadmill.
you can also find ppl who dont use their brain to not beeing able to understand what imply this kind of update.
Plus, many said “its only one ring”, i would say, learn to read, they said in december they want had a tons of ascended item…. ( weapons / armor.. etc ).I Also suppose they start with only one ring to see how people react, a test to see if they can go one with gear treadmill….
In this way, they are “smart” since the stat increase dont look huge at the first look and people forget that many other powered stuff coming out later.Anet really fail this move.
I’am also really happy to see so many people not liking this.
They also used Magic Find Rings to let the difference look even smaller. But that case is, that the new ring has about 40% more Magic find that the old one. That percentage would also apply on crit. damage items. The rest of the stats are just under 10%. Looking for a full new gearset that is 10% better than the old ones? And about 40% (!!!) better in some stats? That’s not a little change by any means, that’s insanity. And they even said that is only the start and they will build upon that system of a great item progression.
There are countless options for players who like gear treat mills. There are near to no options for players who don’t like them. Why should Gw2 jumping on the bandwaggon, lying their 7 year old fanbase and all newcomers, just to become a mass product that will have the same fate as any other wow-clone coming out over the last years? That don’t make sense to me.
(on a side note: I wish new GW1 content/Addon and heared others bringing the same wish. I don’t really think it will come but maybe a miracle happens and anet produces a new GW1 addon where they stand to their roots.)
The Manifesto was a lie.
The whole company should be ashamed.
Considering the entire Manifesto was about options, and the new gear is not mandatory, there was no lie.
Bubbles.2507:
From GW2 manifesto
“Because, like Guild Wars before it, GW2 doesn’t fall into the traps of traditional MMORPGs. It doesn’t suck your life away and force you onto a grinding treadmill; it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun rather than just having fun;”Adding new layers of gear with stats required to complete the hardest parts of new instances is not optional. The new gear and condition is the definition of a grinding treadmill.
Anet Manifesto = Lie’s
Is the Dungeon mandatory? Considering its randomized and never ends….. no its not. It’s 100% optional. You can’t even actually finish it… it doesn’t end…. at all… just keep going until its too hard and you give up.
The Agony only kicks in after you run the dungeon instances a few times. You can probably see all 9 areas without ever having to worry. I fail to see how you absolutely 100% have to do this content.
And their blogpost says they will build upon that system and add more content of that type. So your argument in 1 year will be that 50% of the content is only avaible with the new gear is ok because it’s optional. By that defintion there is not gear checks and gear trat mills in any game.
This only strengthens the point that they adding a gear treat mill. Just sad.
NAY for gear progression.
Yes for new content.
So since Anet did broke their promise that GW2 won’t have gear progression stat wise and GW2 is becoming a game that I (and I think a decent number of players) don’t want to play anymore: How about start to make GW1 Expansions again? I’m willing to pay 50 bucks for each new campaign and just buying new charslots if you stay to your philosophy and bringing new content to that fantastic game. I think it’s a good idea to drive two games at once, one unique game and one, that is more for the majority of switching MMO-players.
This should have just been brought into the game like infusion was in the first game with being able to add the infusion to your currently existing exotics without raising the stat level. As it sets they are just going to ruin there game as the only game to thrive on the treadmill has been WoW. Every other game has crashed and burned when these changes have started.
Very bland and blanket based statements based upon what proof?
Just about every other game that has crashed and burned is still running, with minimal population and this, could just as well been planned in thier forcast for the games life span.
The question people like yourself needs to ask is, how many people are gaming companies willing to cater too before they pull the plug on the servers? This we will never know, but if a game is still floating and releasing content, clearly, they are not crashing and burning.
On top of this, no, that game you mention which we will not speak of is not the only game to thrive on a gear grind treadmill, many are still thriving on it and are still releasing content.
The failure is, people like yourself who only choose to compaire everything to that mmorpg. That is the only problem.
So if any game runs with low population, WHY not making a game that is different from each other as the KEPT PROMISING us? Why try to appeal other poeple that would go again after a month or so if it doesn’t really matter if the GW fanbase is going because that game coudl still run in minimum population?
I find it strange that people are willing to farm for months on end for something as trivial as one weapon skin which is simply a look but would not farm for something like Ascended based gear which can be upgraded over time with future expasions/content patches.
Does anyone else find this mind set boggling?
No because it was optional. You can do it, whenever you want and this is important. If I don’t have fun with grinding for the next year, I haven’t to do it. If I decided, that I want a specific item than I could grind. That was one of the big things GW was so amazing. You could make a break for years or just playing without grind for years and just jump onto grind whenever you want and splitting it so you always had fun – not the feeling of work.
This Guild Wars 2 community makes me sick. Look at how you are all acting! Your behaving like pathetic spoilt children.
They have NOT broken any promises introducing Ascended gear, this is not a “gear treadmill” and it is not even a grind!
They are introducing TWO new items with this patch, a ring and a backpiece, the majority of you complainers will easily get those items within hours of the dungeon opening and you can all go back to your simple boring lifes until they introduce two more Ascended items a few months from now.
Its TWO items, only two, there is no grind there, stop pretending there is.
Ascended items are here to create the illusion of charector progression, it is gated on purpose so the very large amount of players who do enjoy a more stat increases progression with there hero will be encouraged to keep playing for a longer period of time.
Also, this is where the stat increase ends, if you payed attention to the blog you would noticed that this increase is a once off, yes they did say they would add more Ascended items but there stats what get any bigger than that.
I honestly hope all you complainers stop, take a deep breath, and think for a second instead of raging on the forums.
These changes are now inevitable, it is only TWO items to start with, that wont kill anyone, this wont be the end of the game. Life will continue i promise.
It’s not a grind now, but it will be in the future. Look at the blogpost. This is just the beginning.
“This is just the beginning. In November, we’re only adding the first level of Infusions and Ascended Rings and Back slots, so that leaves us a lot of room to build upon these levels of Item progression in future content. "
“As we release more new end game content in the future, you’ll see more Infusions and Ascended item types being added to the game. Eventually, you’ll be able to kit yourself out with a full set of Ascended gear and high end Infusions to help give you the edge in end game content.”
They completly crushed their old item philosophy. It’s the beginning, the start of a treat mill and they start the hard way of making GW2 a random MMO waste.
Yeah… so you should really re-read what you quote before you post it next time because you just made yourself look stupid and provided evidence to support me.
I did. More than one time. Your post and the blogpost. Than my post. I think you just don’t understand what “breaking promises” means for the future. I think you don’t understand that the gear treat mill won’t come with the next patch but will come with future patches as the coming patch is just the start.

This is not GW!!
What are you doing A.net?!?!
This!
If this comes, GW2 turns completly into a random MMO. And I won’t continue playing and paying for future expansions. Baah I can’t even get my thoughts into this post, I’m shocked. -.-
When this is the case: Why is the melandru statue just placed somewhere else but not damaged? The other statues are not damaged either.
I don’t know how to load up pics here, so I used a different website.
However I decided to explore the area around the Temple of Ages again and the statues are different than they were in GW1. Of course the temple is sunken now so heights might be a problem, but it is not only that. Here are the pictures (klick to larger pics):
GW1:
Gw2:
The statues stand different to each other. So the Dwayna Statue in GW2 is, where the Melandru Statue in GW1 was. On Dwayna-Statue place is now a Kormir Statue which was not even there in GW1 (because Kormir ascended 3 years after Prophecies). So did they build a Kormir Statue there in the time between GW1 and when the temple sunk? The Melandru Statue is in the place of the old Balthasar Statue which is completly gone. What happened to the statue of balthasar, why is it gone and why is the melandru statue there instead?
I’m extremly curious about what happened here. I#m looking to find some npc’s.
@Narcemus: I thought it’s more like that the tengu’s were hunted down and flet rather than the cantha’s poeple letting them go?
In the new building with the unfinished asura-gate next to it the is a “log-book” (possibly) that shows the map of tyria with a lot of blue arrows. That could be a lot of things: drifts in the sea, movement of creatures fleeing, asura calculations about some movements in the future, actual routs for shipping? Maybe someone have a clue or an informations that adds up to this.
They can be found around most of the ‘beaches’ in LA, also note the tons of fishers gathering near these things, the metric kitten ton of crabs all over, the grawl refugees, the npcs talking about export and sailing to southern waters, the mysterious asura gate next to a house in the south, the boat anchored in the south west corner, and the priory tent near the memorial, and then theres an npc who is expecting a very dangerous delivery from the north. The clues are all over the place, but they don’t all add up.
I’m thinking that we’ll have to fight a huge crab monster judging by the sign.
Thank you. We found the anchored ship too and we wasn’t sure if it was there since “ever”. There is also a ship of the same type sunken in the south near the quaggan city that seems new. Said guild friend also found the dangerous delivery when it actually has been delivered. But nothing special happend except the transport-gruop (with dolyak) exits to the gendarran fields after delivery.
Can someone say for sure if this events are new (=came with the last patch)? Because if they are, the may be hints for the “something is rising in the sea of sorrows”-event that is coming in the mid of november.
Another person of my guild (much thanks to him!) and me spend about an hour to translate the sign on the beach with the giant “monster” and the funny looking stickman that is running away. We thought in the end there would be some nice information but there is nothing that makes sense for us. Only a complete senseless (but funny nonseless) wordchain. Translation (some words maybe wrong because of unreadable letters):
