Once again me and some guildies (6 of us this time) had a great time roaming around in BT border tonight. We came across various enemies in groups of 1-10, winning most fights though credit to the FSP group that wiped us in Greenvale. Unfortunately you caught us just before we capped hills so we didn’t have a repeat of last night in that regard.

Still, thanks to everyone for not zerging over us. I think i’ll try to get the guild doing more roaming parties like this in future.

Did this happen twice last night? Our leader was annoyed that we ran into the lord room without checking first, but we didn’t fight him for 5 minutes, we left and waited. Also, we were exactly 20 at our biggest, including the two who got stuck outside because they just HAD to stay and cap the sentry because WXP!

So you must be talking about a different occasion, or otherwise you’re just being liberal with the truth to try and paint FSP as idiot noobs.

I saw at least 5 people go down to the lord and even more fighting him. Some of you were waiting outside but it looked like most of you were in there.

The 4 of us guildies had a great time in BT border around Bluelake tonight. Enemies came in groups of 2-8 so we able to have some nice open field fights, PONY and KING being the enemies that come to mind. Thanks for not blobbing up to kill us.

As much as this thread has been about blobbing, you’re no worse than other servers of your size. I’ve enjoyed the fights we’ve had in our borderlands.

Don’t say like “Well first you need to get a guardian” cause no.
A dungeon needs to be able to present a challenge but at the same time be doable regardless of what class you picked at the beginning.
So what is the solution for a party of friends consisting of

Warrior
Ranger
Necromancer
Warrior
Elementalist

As a Warrior I was almost able to solo it (everyone else in my party died at the start but I kept going) with my healing shout build.

I kited the golems with my longbow, climbed the boxes only to avoid the faster wall and used Shake It Off to get strait back up whenever I got pulled. Stacking toughness + vitality means the laser walls are no longer one shot kills and all the healing from the shouts means you can recover from them quickly.

I can’t speak for any other profession.

Could Arborstone not sneak in under FoW since it’s deviation is so much higher than WSR’s?

I didn’t take this week’s scores into account, so that’s where the difference comes from.

I’m back with the numbers as promised. Exactly how many points each server would be expected to hold depends on the third server. That said, we can look at the SoR vs ET head to head in isolation and calculate an expected ratio of points.

Feeding the server’s ranking, deviation and volatility into glicko 2 gives an expected match score of 0.998703101 (this number is always between 0 and 1) for SoR. Feeding this number into the sine transformation Anet uses and rearranging gives an expected ratio of 42.6.

So for the ratings to stay the same, SoR needs 42.6 points for every 1 ET gets. Depending on which server they are up against that translates to ET holding an average of 8-16 points.

Short answer: SoR could gain rating but it would require a severe blowout.

Better answer incoming once I check the numbers.

To the OP, I have to simply parrot what’s been said. This is barely a problem for most of the tiers so if you’re finding it unplayable you should consider transferring down a few tiers. To this end, I do feel more could be done to facilitate transfers of this nature but if you’re experience is a bad as you say it is, it would be worth all the gold you can get.

Probably the only way we could ever get guilds to transfer here.

For instance its not fair for TC lose rank to DB just beacause db got a matchup where they can hold all maps for most of the day while TC has to fight round the clock and is losing rating even though its winning.

THAT is what sucks with this system, and it will keep happening. And the way this system works with its randomness, it will never “stabilize”

You’re not looking at the big picture. Currently most of the red server (except SoR and HoD) is gaining ratings, which indicates that the blue and/or the green servers aren’t doing as good as they are supposed to be. Which means that the OLD rating system, with the tiers, doesn’t indicate real server’s fighting power. Without the interactive match-ups between tiers (random match-ups), we would never know, from the old system, that the red server actually deserves more ratings then they actually have. It will stabilize.

The fact that SBI and SoS are getting blown out and still gaining points is a problem. When this system ‘stabilizes’ the top server will be around 1850 rating and the bottom server will be around 1500 rating. Making a T1 vs T8 match up very much possible.

If the ratings were to stabalise like this, the deviation and hence the possible range of matchrating of most servers should go down. So this shouldn’t be as much of a problem as you might think.

Please can someone explain (restating it in other words doesn’t count) this idea that the rating system is pushing servers towards in even rating. I accept the current ratings are artificially extreme because of stagnant matchups but I don’t think this is what you’re getting at.

Your comment has made me reread how glicko 2 works as well as how Anet was/is using it and think about it for a while.

It isn’t? My understanding was this not happening was precisely the problem with the old system. Even if this point were true, I still don’t see how it causes lower ranked servers to gain rating points. Maybe I’ve misinterpreted you so some clarification on what you mean here would be welcome.

Only after the delta is resolved will the ratings move towards actually being accurate. Unfortunately this will never happen in randomly seeded matchups every week.

I must have spent at least the past hour thinking about this last sentence. Figuring out what this means about the effectiveness of the ranking system at varying disparities of rating, considering whether the glicko formulae and/or Anet’s sine transformation would be responsible.
To put it simply, the only way I can see this to be true is if there is a systematic error in how the expected score (the score that results in no ratings change, denoted as E in the glicko page) is calculated. Thing is, I’m not convinced it’s possible for one to exist, though I need to think about that part further.

If you have justification for your statement, please provide it to save me from blowing my brains out.

The argument that the new system will cause server ratings to move closer together seems to be based on the idea that higher ranked servers generally bleed points to the lower ranked server in their matchup.

For this to be the case, the expectation would have to be for lower ranked servers to do better than Glicko expects them to. Whether or not this is true is dependent on how the scores actually correlate with the rankings, so the parameters in Glicko 2 alone aren’t enough to prove anything. You would need to analyse past results.

The best explanation from the other thread (seriously people, how many one up one down threads do we need?) is as follows:

Every week will have a T1 server playing a T2 and T3 server, no matter what.. this pattern continues all the way down the ladder. IE T2 server will be playing a T3 and T4 server..
No one in T3 will want to win because they’ll get smashed by whatever monster from T1 loses and no one in T2 will want to win because they’ll get thrown in with 2 T1 monsters.

I could definitley see some of the matchups being the same but not all. I’m no statistics guru but that seems extremely unlikely.

They weren’t all the same, just mostly. If you look at the numbers on MOS, you can see that the ratings changes were more drastic than usual, some of the servers lost 30+ points and others gained 30+. With the old system you were likely to only receive 20-30, tops, in either direction, with the average being close to +/- 20-25 (excluding outliers and eyeballing it).

The new matchups are exactly what they would have been under the old system, which involves a few changes from last week.

WvW is won through being having better coverage aka more numbers. Even in the lower tiers.

You make the same point you made before, to which I make the same point I made before. That said, I agree that numbers are definitely the most important part of winning.
