I guess you’re thinking something along the lines of how skill runes work in Diablo 3? I wouldn’t mind seeing that. GW2 needs an overhaul in the skill department for sure.

Does anybody else think it’s possible that they have a huge content addition sitting around and waiting for the releases of TESO/Wildstart/EQN and they’ll drop it at the same time to keep people around?

I get the feeling that they’re building something and just not talking about it.

That’s exactly what wow does, and it works. Expansion release around other prominent titles is like using heat to cook. No heat, you can’t cook, period.

It’s all a matter of when. Mists of Pandaria hit not long after GW2 launched right? And it was announced a good bit before that. If they are wanting something to hit when these new MMOs do, then they need to start announcing. And as far as Wildstar goes…isn’t it published by NCSoft? They aren’t going to let GW2 take away any of it’s glory.

Did anet make one of their biggest mistakes?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nat.4029

Nat.4029

They said that the one big mistake they made with GW1 was blowing up “home”.

I don’t remember them saying that, but destroying Ascalon was one of the best narrative choices they made in GW1. If the writers viewed it as being the exact opposite, I would be really worried. Because it would mean that the writers were not able to recognize a good story decision when they saw one.

Destroying Ascalon raised the stakes, and gave the Searing impact on the player. The desolate feeling after leaving Pre-Sear was one of the most important moments of GW1, and it really left an impression.

Was destroying Lion’s Arch in GW2 a good story decision too? I believe it was, because it raises the stakes, and makes the racial cities more important now. I’m not sure if moving everything to the Vigil was a good decision though. Only a third of the players chose the Vigil for starters. Plus, it kind of ruins the opportunity of making the racial cities matter. I think they should have forced all players to simply go back to their racial capitals, and make that their new home.

+1

I never found myself saying, “Man, the Guild Wars story is amazing.” But it was a lot better than what GW2 has given us so far. I thought the Searing was well done. You start the game in such a beautiful land, then the Charr go nuts and blow it up. Very cool.

I have the issue and it has nothing to do with the card being overclocked or hot. My card is almost new and not oc. The card doesn’t go above 60c in gw2. This problem doesn’t happen in any other game. I’ve ran 3dmark like crazy and haven’t seen a single artifact.

Same for me. My card isn’t OC’d. GW2 is the only game I have these issues.

It would be a major QoL feature. It’s just a pain in the kitten to have to keep up with 4 or 5 different armor skins in your bank. But I’m pretty sure that’s what Anet wants you to do. If you didn’t have to save so much armor and weapons, then you don’t have to purchase as much bank space, so adding a feature like this would be hurting their pocket book.

Someone mentioned in another thread though, that this WAS something that was being talking about at Anet, but who knows if it’s already been scrapped because of the reasons I mentioned.

I’ve had these problems off and on during my time with GW2. It’s never been a major issue all the time. And I can get rid of it by minimizing the game and bringing it back up. I am using an AMD 7870. I’ve seen a lot of people complaining about this, but I haven’t found anything from an Anet dev about it. I guess the main thing I’m wondering is…

Is this a coding problem within GW2? Or is this an AMD issue (driver)?

I’ve seen people saying that the 7xxx series has this problem. I don’t run into these artifacts in any other game that I play.

P.S. This isn’t my picture. I found it online, but it shows the same issues I have. I also get a weird one a lot, where a shaft will be running from a player to a Waypoint. Very strange.

I’m confused where we aren’t getting new content. Eotm was a rather substantial update.

THIS is a substantial update:
-new story
-41 new armor sets, including rare, stand-alone pieces
-100 new profession-specific skills (10 per profession, none of which are elite)
-50 new PvE only skills including 3 elite skills
-10 new heroes
-18 Dungeons
-124 new quests
-The Hall of Monuments
-4 new regions (which were comprised of 24 zones, yes that’s right, 24!)

This is what we got for one of the gw1 expansions (eye of the north)

And you paid full price for it…

Free content:
Sorrow’s Furnace
Domain of Anguish
Hard Mode
GW Beyond.

All of those together are at least equal to all the LS we got so far… and are in addition to the expansions.

And we got all those after how many years?

For example, the Free content we got for Prophecies was a new zone (Grenth’s Footprint), a dungeon with different paths (Sorrow’s Furnace) and a couple of high difficulty quests in a line (Titan Quests) along with the Unique (Green) Item drops from bosses. Later on, we got the revamp of the Tombs of the Primeval Kings (around the release of Factions)

I’d hardly call those equal to what we got in GW2 so far.

Of course they can do both, the real question is how well will a GW2 expansion sell at this point?

A GW2 expansion would sell ridiculously well. It generates major hype. It brings new players in and lures old players back. You don’t see big feature articles on sites like IGN about the Living Story updates, and they don’t generate the kind of excitement that an expansion does. Just wait and see how many subscriptions WoW picks up once it’s new expansion hits.

LS defenders don’t want permanent content, and arguing with them is pointless.

Like I’ve said before, I don’t mind the LS at all, as long as there is an expansion being worked on in the background. The LS is something merely to tide you over until substantial and permanent content is added to the game. Which surely HAS to happen at some point, I would hope. I’m not going to begin to say I know the first thing about game development, but would it be crazy to have a Living Story team that added content to GW2 while another much larger team works on an expansion? Maybe that’s what’s going on at Anet. I’d just love to hear it from their mouths.

befoe they add cantha, they should first complete Tyria..

theres way too much left open of Tyria…

  • The whole Maguuma Jungle
  • The whole Crystal Desert
  • The whole Fire Ring Islands
  • The whole North of Shiverpeaks and all of the old EotN Map Parts
  • The whole Deldrimor Territory
  • The Dominion of Winds and the whole Sea of Sorrows/Strait of Malchior Area

Tyria just feels again, like in GW1, as if just only like basically 40% of the whole Continent is explorable.

So Tyria > Cantha for now first.

I wouldn’t mind them going back and forth to be honest. Release some of Cantha, then come back to Tyria. It’d be a nice change of scenery and gameplay.

I like this, but it’d be better (for long term play purposes) if the token wasn’t guaranteed. For instance, a certain boss might have a chance to drop this token among many other things. Sounds a bit familiar to…..

I would agree with this but the RNG in this game is brutal. I can see myself never getting a token if it worked like that, which is almost the same as it is now. If they made it so every 10th run or so you get a ticket guaranteed or something like that, then it wouldnt be so luck based.

GW2 could have such a better end-game. This is the kind of stuff that is fun to me. I like actually FINDING good gear. Saving up mats/or gold to buy the mats and then crafting a Legendary or Ascended piece just isn’t that fun to me. I’d love to play a hard-mode dungeon and be rewarded by the boss dropping something really good for my character.

If A.net really intented to deliver expansion’s worth of content, then after 1.5 years they would have delivered at least amount of content comparable to FACTIONS expansion. They did not though, despite the fact that they had 300 people instead of 50. Is it okay for me to consider you delusional?

And one more thing most people are skewing about WoW’s first expansion. Saying WoW released in 2004 and BC was released in 2007. While this IS true, WoW released in Nov. 2004 (right near the end of 2004) and BC released January 2007. Which is barely over 2 years development time. Not 3 years in between. Not that it really matters… I’m just nitpicking here.

snippity.

I guess I fall into the category you mentioned because I’ve voiced my opinion several times on what “expansion-style” content really is. And that content isn’t what we’ve had so far in the Living Story. It’s not that I don’t like the Living Story. I think it’s cool. Although, it sucks when you have to take a hiatus from the game and miss things that you’ll never be able to play through again. That aside, I like what they’re doing with it. My biggest complaint is just the lack of permanent content that comes out of it. Permanent content that you usually get from expansions/campaigns.

I know you’re right though. They will slowly release these things (through the Living Story, I reckon). My big thing as of right now though, is the people who say we’ve already gotten an expansion’s worth of content through the LS, when in actuality we haven’t even come close to that. I will be the first to commend Anet, when they finally announce the things that I hope they’ve actually been doing “behind the scenes”. We just have to wait and see.

I guess it all depends on who looks at it, I believe the world changes and zone changes that have been added to the game amount for an expansions worth of content. There have been new zones that opened up for the living story, just because it did not stick around. Which even if it did people would still only play it for a few weeks then be done waiting for the next thing. I really dislike the old model of how expansions were handled, and look forward to how A-Net is handling it. I do not need a new class/race to feel that they released an expansions worth of content. Or a new zone that is added that i visit once beat all the vistas and hearts and then never go back until I create a new character, or kill a champ in the zone.

I think they handled Eye of the north perfectly.

Yes they did. EotN was a great expansion that people played for a LONG time. They weren’t finished in two weeks.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Nat.4029

I am not in favor at all of an expansion. I do not want to wait 1-1.5 years for a large release of content, that GW2 has given me in small doses every 2 weeks for the last 7 months. If you look at the large picture you can get expansion worth of content without the expansion. No idea why people want to wait 1-1.5 year for a large release of stuff, that they will beat in 2 weeks and then be waiting another 1-1.5 years for the next one.

I look forward to the bi-weekly updates. And to the expansion worth of content that will come out of them. Yes if you add up 1-1.5 years worth of bi-weekly content you will indeed hit the amount of content that is in an expansion.

So in over a year of Living Story content, how many new zones have they added? One. (Southsun) And it doesn’t even come close to having the content that the launch zones have. And don’t say “They added Labyrinthe Cliffs and the Bazaar”… No they didn’t. If they truly added those to the game, they would still be accessible.

I too look forward to the bi-weekly updates, I’m not gonna lie. But I look forward to getting some actual content in the game in the future. I don’t really consider all this temporary stuff “content”. I look at it as small holiday events that come and go each year. True “expansion-worthy” content would be several new zones(complete with hearts, events, POIs, and Vistas). New race. New class. New skills for every class. New weapon types (two handed axe for example). A plethora of new weapon and gear skins. At least 4 or 5 new dungeons (complete with dungeon gear). A new world boss for each of the new zones…. the list goes on. I’m not saying ALL this should be in one expansion, but these are the things that should come with expansion-style content.

Like I said, I’ve enjoyed a lot of the living story. I’m not trying to knock it here. I’m just saying that it will NEVER add up to an “expansions-worth of content”.

To the extreme of wanting NPC allies instead of talking to others in game? That’s kind of sad really.

It’s not necessarily that they don’t desire to talk to others. Some of us just prefer playing with NPCs. They don’t kitten at you, they don’t treat you like trash, they don’t randomly go afk, they don’t argue about how things should or shouldn’t be done, etc etc.

Some people just like to play solo. Doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t social though. Although I’m sure there are plenty of people that are shy or have a hard time reaching out to other socially (ie socially awkward). That’s no reason to judge them so harshly.

I consider myself very social, but I have a 2 month old son. If I get time to play, I may still have to get up at any point if he needs some attention. I’d love to be able to run dungeons, but right now I just can’t even commit 1 hour of constant game time. Having NPC allies would be nice for someone like me, as I could stop at any point and be afk, and my team wouldn’t give a flying kitten whether I was afk for 5 minutes or 30 minutes. THAT would be very nice. But like I said earlier… Anet more than likely would never commit development time to something like this. I would love to see it though.

The difference is that WoWs cash shop is all fluff, while GW2’s cash shop sells real improvements, like bag slots and bank tabs.

Ultimately, these arguments devolve down to, “Which game do you like better,” where that game is perceived to be superior.

  • On bag slots — WoW gives you four bag slots for “free.” So does GW2. GW2 allows you to exceed the 4 bag slots, WoW does not.
  • On the bank — WoW allows you to buy bag slots in your bank, which cost gold. You can spend gold in GW2 to buy gems, to then buy bank tabs.

I’m not seeing a ton of difference, other than that I can have more bag slots in GW2.

The only difference there is that the amount of gold you’d have to spend on gems is a lot more than the gold you spend in WoW to open bank tabs. But that’s being nitpicky.
