For the raids for example.

Snakes have been observed to be able to kill lions or tigers. (a few years ago an Indian Cobra killed a rare white tiger even!)

Does this imply that a creature able to kill that snake is also stronger than the tiger?

That’s a fallacy.

i am also having trouble deciding which traits to upgrade to make him an essentail, dependable and survivable character, can someone please help me level him up the right way?

Levelling up the “right way” won’t be an issue since at the end of the day, when you’re a level 80 you’ll have enough hero points to unlock all core-specializations.

For the traits you’re looking for I’d suggest:

  • Honor → Group Support (major)+ Self Sustain (minor)
  • Valor → Self Sustain (major) (Meditations + Monk’s focus are amazing sustain albeit it being a tad bit “selfish” to use.)
  • Virtues → condition removal, stun breaks, passive healing, more frequent aegis and some damage buffs.

Other traits summarized:

  • Radiance is an offensive trait focussing on condi damage and retaliation (it is currently likely the least impressive choice of a core-specialization.)
  • Zeal is a good offensive trait to buff your damage.
  • Dragonhunter, the HoT Elite Specialization, good damage buff, good sustain options, allows the use of high-damaging traps and turns your virtues into physical manifestations. (Example: Virtue of Courage → Shield of Courage (a shield that remains in front of you for 5/7 seconds blocking all hits from the front.)

Valor, Virtues and Zeal would be a good balanced yet tanky option to choose.
Vaor, Virtues and Honor would be really tanky, nice in support as well but you’ll hit as a wet noodle.

To prevent hitting as a wet noodle you’d likely have to look at your armour/runes and jewelry.

That’s because Sylvari are built according to “templates”, human templates even.

The same goes for the Fern Hounds which are built according to canine templates.

in short that would mean that all Sylvari more-or-less look like humans who have existed before.
The weird thing being that Sylvari can alter their physical appearance when exposed to significant emotional/psychological change such as:
#. Turning to Nightmare
#. Being corrupted by Mordremoth.
#. Being Canach.

Marjory & Kasmeer are in a relationship.

Caithe & Faolain have some love-like relationship going as well. although it’s more than just a bit more complicated. having the entire separation between the dream and the nightmare court, Faolain having poisoned Caithe before and Faolain having done a couple of things Caithe really does not agree with. (won’t spoil though.)

it’s worth noting that Sylvari view relationships differently compared to humans mostly because they don’t really consider “gender” that much.

The Shield is a more than viable weapon on the Guardian right now.
The issue most players see with it is that it doesn’t boost DPS further.
It provides a lot of utility however:

  1. The knockback on 5. is amazing for players in pvp, seeker orbs in raids and a few other occasions.
  2. The Aegis + protection on 4. has been a nice on-demand save for my party a few times in fractals and PvP, it is harder to land compared to “Retreat!” but it surely has its use.
  3. The Projectile Absorption on 5. is amazing. in PvP it nearly halves the incoming damage on your team during an on-point fight at mid. In PvE you relieve a lot of pressure as well. The problem being a lot of “projectiles” not being projectiles these days such as the Mordrem Sniper’s “Snipe”.

Overall the Shield is not a useless off-hand to me.
I’d rather take it over the focus in PvP.
The focus is mostly selfish sustain, the shield offers protection to your party.
You literally “Shield” your allies.

Xpac 2: what could replace DH/Longbow?

before this gets off-topic about Paragons again:

  • Yes, you can still log onto GW1 and play a Paragon.
  • Yes, it is still fun to play a Paragon in GW1.

I believe it’s generally accepted that a statement such as:
“I want the Paragon back” on a GW2 Forum means.
“I want something in GW2 that feels/plays like a Paragon from GW1.”

Which I personally agree with.
I love the Paragon’s playstyle in GW1 and I would love for it to be an option for my Guardian in GW2.

Back on topic though:
The underwater spear for Guardian (and for other classes such as Revenant) show that it can be used for both close-combat and ranged combat.

Having a 2-handed spear (used on land) would allow for.
1. fast (condition) damage.
2. gap closers.
3. active blocks.
4. ranged damage + melee damage combined.

I personally would like for it to be themed around the Guardian’s fiery side.

  • When blocking an attack you unleash a fiery burst.
  • When closing a gap you leave a fiery trail.
  • Conditions applied by the spear would apply the burning condition and additional conditions to cover the burning. (Condi-Guardian is fun to play but a single condition is simply too easily countered these days.)

I’d also like to voice my opinion that, although ranged combat can work for a two-handed spear I’d rather see it focussed on melee combat and gap-closers.

Would a ranged-option truly be that mandatory if the gap-closers were to be fast rushes or even teleports/shadowsteps alike Judge’s Intervention?

I personally would prefer a fast, gap-closing melee weapon if only to bypass all the reflects.

Scepter is indeed not too great in PvP right now and it would be great if it were to see changes. But I do not think Guardian’s should have a forced ranged weapon with their next elite specialization because of this.

Lore Q&A

Nero.8047

I’m with Konig on this one. For example we also know there are multiple types of “fire”.

To name a few:

  • Primordial Fire – That which was able to burn the Destroyer of Life
  • Elemental Fire – Most seen and used type of fire.
  • Holy/Cleansing Flames – Guardian’s Blue Flames.

It’s more than possible for there to be a type of ice related to Jormag.

It could even be called “Primordial Ice” although I expect the fire to be called “Primordial Fire” due to the Elder Dragon Primordus rather than it being the fire that was “there” since the beginning of time.

A synonym such as “Primeval” could work for ice I suppose…
Edit: I vote for “Boreal Ice”.

Anyhow this is all speculation.

(actually interested in what ice could be called so I’ll be rereading everything I have on Niflheim and the Jötunn to find a reference! ^^)

and to remain relevant and since I’m actually curious now:

Q: Scott/Matthew could there be some confirmation/expansion on what we currently know of the types of elements e.g. the Primordial Fire?

After using the Portal Gun you can jump to cancel the leap.
This does however create the starting portal underneath you leaving you with no way to create the Teleportation Gun “exit” portal unless you use Portal Entre which will function as Portal Exeunt. (I should’ve mentioned the mesmer requirement)
After this you can move to the desired location and connect the 2 “portals”.

This way is basically a fancy way of weaving the Portal Gun together with the Portal skill.

Not too impressive though.

Is there away to make the portal rifle not make a portal up in the air if the two spots are not level?

I haven’t had this happen with the jump-cancelling way.
I believe it happens during the landing part of using the skill regularly.

As in: You jump → Game registers you’ve landed before you’ve actually landed → you actually land → creates portal at the location where the game registered your landing to be → Portal ends up being a bit too high.

I could be horribly wrong though.

I must say sometimes the portal graphic is way off… but it can still be used normally.

Lore Q&A

Hey Matthew,
Just a quick question that sparked to mind after reading your post just now:

If the Common Tongue was derived from the previous cycle of the Elder Dragons then we know how it could spread from those ancient races to all of the current races we know today.

Yet it seems a bit strange that the Charr seen during Prophecies and mostly the Searing are depicted to communicate mostly with grunts and roars.

My memory is a bit hazy but wasn’t Scorch Emberspire in GW:Nightfall’s Realm of Torment the first Charr to be shown to the players to well… speak the common tongue?

Question being:
Were the Flame Legion Charr who invaded Ascalon able to speak in the Common Tongue? (One would assume so due to your post ^^)

Also what was the reasoning behind not showing the Charr communicate?

  • To create more of a monstruous “enemy” archetype?
  • Was there no need?
  • Was the lore surrounding the common tongue simply not written yet?

Unbalanced Classes

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nero.8047

Nero.8047

As Belial said:
Why do you think Condi Necro’s and trappers are unbalanced?

  • Do you think they deal too much damage?
  • Do you believe they’re hard/impossible to counter?
  • Do you believe they’re “Cheese-builds” which are simple to play yet achieve great results?

etc.

also for the provided list above here are some answers related to the Medi-Trapper:

  • too much damage.
Medi-Trappers can deal a lot of damage, yet also have been nerfed to deal less damage. Do also note that to receive this damage you have to experience the entire burst and or even walk out of the Test of Faith border.
  • hard/impossible to counter?
Medi-Trappers aren’t that hard to counter. They’re one-trick ponies even!
Once you know how a Medi-Trapper works you can nullify the entire burst. (not even kidding!)

Does the DH teleport to you using JI? → dodge roll away. → no damage.
Does the DH crouch down looking as if he’s placing something on the ground? → dodge roll away. → no damage.
Does the DH’s traps trigger? → Dodge roll away → surprisingly still no damage.

Even with the trait that stuns when traps trigger you can still dodge out of the traps.
Dragon’s Maw for example has multiple chances to dodge out:
DH appears → 1 → DH places the trap → 2 → It triggers & stuns → 3 → Maw appears but hasn’t closed yet → 4 → maw closes & now the trap is working.

Meaning the “elite” skill for a medi-trapper has 4 chances to be nullified!

  • One-Trick pony builds that achieve great results?
The Medi-Trapper is a one-trick pony build yet does not achieve great results.

Because of what I said during the 2nd bullet Medi-trappers are easily countered in PvP.
This is a huge (yet not the entire reason) why you do not see a lot of Medi-Trappers in ranked pvp.

Apologies if this isn’t the type of reply you were wishing to receive but as a Guardian main I feel responsible to point out that this profession which is often called out to be “OP” and in need of more nerfs is actually a D-tier ranked profession.

A last suggestion is also:

You might want to continue this thread in the PvP section of the forums (or even in a profession-themed sub-section if you’ve found yourself mostly playing a single class versus these classes which you consider unbalanced.)

Xpac 2: what could replace DH/Longbow?

in Guardian

Posted by: Nero.8047

Nero.8047

My idea has been and remains to be a spear. (yes that ol’ beaten horse.)
I’d prefer it to be a fast condi-focussed weapon combined with plenty of gap-closing options.

Right now Guardians do not fare well as condition-dealing class and as you said who would give up DH because of the ranged damage?

A ranged option is great but a solid gap-closing option could work as well especially if combined with a more reliable method of granting increased movement speed to oneself.

If the new Elite Specialization would make the Guardian’s mobility greater the desire for ranged combat would be lesser.

For the utilities I think a lot could replace the traps.
Traps aren’t too interesting. You place them, they get triggered, the effect triggers.
Almost no mindgames possible there.

I’d personally like supportive skills which focus on boosting the performance of allies over yourself.
If you’ve played GW:Nightfall think of something along the lines of a chant.

“for 10 seconds you and your allies deal …% more damage with their next … attacks.”

This type of skill wouldn’t be useless for a solo Guardian but would shine in multiplayer combat.

Dragonhunter and Spirit Weapons

in Guardian

Posted by: Nero.8047

Nero.8047

What justifies the Dragonhunter Elite Specialization is the following:

  1. The Guardian lacked reliable ranged damage. (Scepter having been the most reliable and good luck using the scepter in pvp for example.)
  2. The Guardian lacked a pure offensive option altogether.
  3. The Guardian lacked decent burst. (GS being one of the sole options.)

What the Elite Specializations are intending to do is fill roles which the core-profession does not fully cater to.

In an offensive-themed Elite Specizialization such as the Dragonhunter it does not thematically fit to make it even more tanky/survivable by means of buffing Spirit Weapons.

1. Guardian + Ranger ? Dragonhunter

  • Although we may see similarities with the Ranger, there aren’t any solid connections between the two professions especially in lore (or what little we know of it.)

2. Pets have no intended place within the Dragonhunter. They were never meant to be beastmasters. (or in this situation Spirit Weaponsmiths) Pets do not thematically fit within the offensive role of the Dragonhunter.

3. Spirit Weapons are broken AI-pets which aren’t focussed on one aspect (such as survivability) in the first place. A sword for offense, a hammer for CC, a bow for support and a shield for defense. a Spirit-Weapons related trait should firstmost come from the core-Guardian and if not from an Elite Specialization focussing on materializing the Guardian’s magic into physical objects.

3.5. Materializing the Guardian’s magic into physical objects is what ties most closely to what the Dragonhunter is since its virtues are Physical manifestations of Virtues which used to be mere magical effects. You could argue that Spirit Weapons would relate to the Dragonhunter from this perspective but it would still not fit within what the Dragonhunter was intended to be, an offensive burst-DPS’er.

conclusion:

I could argue to side with you and I could argue against you. I personally think however that Spirit Weapons have little relation to the Dragonhunter Elite Specialization and would prefer to have Spirit Weapons buffed on their own, related to the core-profession or to a new Elite Specialization.

Konig I believe Deleena referenced to the following dialogue:

Stefan the Sonorous: “Our story begins in the far-off land of Tyria in the grand city of Ascalon many years ago. We find our hero desperately scouring the countryside in search of a gift to give his beautiful fiance….”
Stefan the Sonorous: “But all was not well in the land of Ascalon. Evil had turned its eye to Tyria and sought to sow dissent. A sequence of events was set in motion that would lead to the fall of this great metropolis.”
Stefan the Sonorous: “Events most dire had struck Ascalon and left it reeling. But the prince knew what he must do and was not afraid.”
Vaughn the Venerable: “Let’s cross the mountains and go to Kryta! They don’t have Charr there!”
Freya the Firm: “Like, roarrrrrr!”
Vaughn the Vernerable: “Have at ye, scoundrel!”
Freya the Firm: ""Like, ouch."
Vaughn the Vernerable: “Quickly, my fellow Ascalons! [sic] We must depart while we still have our legs!”
Merkle the Muscular: “My son. Merkle displeased. You no longer prince of Ascalon. You no longer Merkle son!”
Vaughn the Venerable: “As a boy I spent much time in these lands. Look at them now. Just look at them!”
Prince Bokka the Magnificent: “How predictable.”
Stefan the Sonorous: “So, striking off in search of his destiny and a new home for his people, the prince traveled across the Shiverpeak mountains [sic] and headed toward Kryta. The journey was difficult, long, and somewhat boring, but they persevered. Until…”
Ernald the Exact: “The stone summit [sic] will not yield the Frost Gate quietly.”
Ernald the Exact: “Your punishment for trespassing is death! Death I say!”
Vaughn the Venerable: “Um…line?”
Stefan the Sonorous: “It’s ‘You cannot save me.’”
Stefan the Sonorous: “And so, the prince valiantly laid down his life for his people….”
Vaughn the Venerable: “I don’t remember that being in my copy of the script…. Stop improvising, you troll!”
Prince Bokka the Magnificent: “This play is utter tripe!”
Vaughn the Venerable: “Ernald! Time for plan B!”
Merkle the Muscular: “Merkle like plan B. Merkle like smash! SMASH!”
Stefan the Sonorous: “And then the valiant Kournans smote the Istani interlopers with a righteous fury!”
Prince Bokka the Magnificent: “Wait, what?”
Ernald the Exact: “This is my favorite part.”
Prince Bokka the Magnificent: “Oh dear!”
Prince Bokka the Magnificent: “Oh my, this is not good…not good at all! Varesh must have changed her mind! I must hurry to safety in Ahdashim!”
Prince Bokka the Magnificent: “I am quite sorry about this! I must leave right away! Please speak with Royal Finance Minister Oluda for a refund.”

Guardian.
I love the crowd control.

I love keeping an eye on the entire battlefield while facetanking bosses.
Knowing I can pop up a wall of reflection to nullify a lot of party-wipes.
Or to pop up a quick “Retreat!” when there’s a dangerous attack incoming.

Perhaps it’s because I’ve played the profession a lot but Guardian feels terribly natural to me.
