I’ve never given much thought to standing in people, but I did once use the sleep emote before going afk for a minute, and when I got back some dude was spooning me. Now tell me where THAT falls within MMO etiquette.

They probably just wanted to make sure you didn’t get cold.

You might be right. Vigil keep does look kind of cold. I guess I was asking for shenanigans sleeping right outside the Asura gate hub like that.

I have been thinking about itunes playlists for various areas of Tyria lately.

Orr – Pink Floyd (especially The Wall and Final Cut)

Ascalon – Rammstein and various metal bands, maybe some martial stuff

Kyrta – not as harsh as metal but not Don’tWorry Be Happy on a loop either, more of a variety

Maguuma (Sylvari area) – mood music, the type of stuff you would use for meditation, reiki, or massage

Maguuma (Asura region) – Still Alive and anything techno

Maguuma (jungle region) – ???

Shiverpeaks – Sibelius?

[Yes, I have an extremely eclectic music library.]

And somewhere south of Lion’s Arch, this is playing… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXoZsgNHquM
I love reading all these responses, btw. Kossage has a lot of interesting points that I never considered.

Friday, after being in the beta for an hour or so, I got up to take a snack break. It was around that time that a 6 year old piece of hardware on my PC blew out, making the whole system unusable. I was looking forward to this weekend so much, and I barely got to touch on it. I suppose this is all my fault for not taking better care of my electronics, and now my replacement part won’t arrive for a week. I suppose there is nothing that can be done and really no point even in bringing this up on the forums.
So I guess all I’m really trying to say is,
IT’S SOOOOOOOOO SAD.

Looking at the shape of a Charr’s head, there actually isn’t much room for a significantly massive brain. Hypothetically, Charr would need to have a very unusual brain structure allowing for generous surface area in order for them to display the level of intelligence they do.
There is, however, room for a very large and complex cerebellum. This would provide for superhuman agility, balance, and coordination.

It’d be nice if there were canon hybrids in Tyria. Here’s why…
Behold the master plan!

Step 1: Take a good-natured if hairy and dim-witted Rox

Step 2: Take a good-natured if hairy and dim-witted Braham

Step 3: Get some 3rd rate /fic action going on up in here.

Step 4: Get a healthy litter of good-natured if hairy and dim-witted cross-species abominations against nature.

Step 5: Show this whole mess to Mordremoth.

Step 6: Mordremoth looks and says “You know what? I f——-g quit.” He then pops off his planty skull cap, scoops out his plant brain, drops it on the ground and stomps on it ’til he dies.

Step 7: Aside from getting similar reactions out of everyone else who sees… PACT VICTORIOUS!

Step 8: Afternoon croissants with Queen Jenna.

A good necromancer?

I’m aware of the cultural influence of christianity in the late antiquity and early middle ages. It bothers me that Hades is still the go-to bad guy in modern interpretations of classical myths. Atleast Age of Mythology made Poseidon the villain for a change. Man I need to play that game some time again.

Oh. I apologize for my condescending response.
Water casters can be scary, When they’re not drowning you with a globe of water around your head they’re ripping the cytoplasm out of your cells.
Seriously, why are death mages always the bad guys when you’ve got hydromancers drowning you, life mages mutating you, and mind mages rewriting your person?

As it turns out, not everyone hates Hades.

It makes me so sad whenever Hades is cast as the stereotypical villain when he was in fact probably the least villainous of the Olympians. Kidnapping the woman that would later be his wife aside (which wasn’t even evil, but romantic by greek standards) he never did anything to deserve the heat. I get all worked up thinking about it again!

As Christianity has spread to new cultures, those cultures molded their beliefs and customs around their new found religion. This has lead to the use of older terms to describe a concept in Christianity. Terms such as Elysium, Valhalla, and Avalon have been used to refer to Christian Heaven. Likewise, Satan has been referred to as Mephistopheles, Draco, Pluto, and of course Hades. This is similar to the slow adaptation of Beowulf from pagan warrior to Christian hero as a product of changing cultural sentiments.

Edit: On that note, a hypothetical Christianized Kryta would likely refer to Satan as Abbadon. Additionally, they would likely continue to revere their old gods as angels or saints. They might claim that God sent Grenth to Egypt to claim the lives of the firstborn or that Balthazar drove a disgraced Adam and Eve out of Eden.

Charr music

in Lore

Posted by: Nox Lucis.8341

Nox Lucis.8341

For some reason, the question has been on my mind lately as to what sort of music Charr would be listening to. Every culture has its music, and that music in turn reflects its native culture. (Although it is clear that the Charr do not value art so much as the other races, particularly humans, their artistic side does show itself in the ornate metalworkings of the Iron Legion.) So, Charr music would be expected to express the cultural values of its creators. Charr tend to crave action, excitement, and a kind of grandness. They are also coarse and carry over many primitive qualities in spite of their technological advancement. I was thinking about how Charr value war, so maybe they would appreciate something like this that glorifies battle.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51JiA0ilqxo
But they do like to drink a lot, so perhaps they would rather like something about a drunken good time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7kJRGPgvRQ
Thinking about it though… Those both sound more “Norn” than “Charr” (particularly that last one). Perhaps Charr would prefer something with marching militaristic influences? Like this?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-x_uBB-KIE
Or perhaps not like that.
So what do you think Charr music would sound like? Do you think Charr would listen to music at all?
Just to be clear, I don’t think the official GW2 soundtrack would give us any idea. I think it serves more to establish tone and atmosphere for the game than anything else.

I’m not sure how much this contributes to the topic, but flying in MMOs generally seems to serve the purpose of long distance travel, a niche occupied by portals, gates, and waypoints in GW2. Gliders seem more like an extension of the semi-platforming elements present in this game than a legitimate mode of transport.

Wow, this really took off while I wasn’t paying attention. XD So interesting to read! If anyone cares to know some context, my human girlie was an orphan whose first real friend and parental figure was a Charr. The two of them were rather reclusive, which resulted in girlie having zero meaningful contact with humans from childhood until later teen years. Said Charr was an obsessive historian of the Ascalon bickerings, and girlie inherited that interest, along with a partiality towards the Charr. When it comes to social interactions, she feels more like a Charr than a human.

Interesting. There exists some ideas put forward regarding human sexuality that in this context might suggest that a human who grew up around Charr and more particularly if this human had Charr present at a moment of sexual awakening, she might come to subconsciously associate Charr with sexual arousal. This human would effectively have a Charr fetish.
I speculate that such a human might struggle with finding a Charr partner that can fully and effectively reciprocate the affection, as well as being accepted by mainstream Krytan society.

Disclaimer-
I am not a psychiatrist, a roleplayer, or a lore expert. Anything I say with regard to these topics has the potential to wrong and/or woefully stupid.

I must say, playing as a necro in a dungeon has brought me undue criticism many times in the past, to the point where the whole group blames me for things that are completely out of my hands and make no sense. I usually take this quietly, as there is no point in having a discussion with toxic, name-calling players. It gets absurd, though. I’ve seen it on numerous occasions where the entire group wipes minus me, and I get blamed because of an alleged lack of dps. Thing is, I see these PUGs get wiped in literally 2-3 seconds by a single boss (especially some of the TA encounters). If I ever spoke to these people, I would say… "No, I am not alive because I built defense over offense (as I did not). I am alive because of a well timed dodge roll. The rest of you did nothing but run up to the target spamming 1. Are any of you aware that you have a dodge roll? Are any of you aware you have a heal? I ask these because none of you seem to use them. Most importantly, are any of you aware of yourselves? Ele, you never drop any fire fields. Guard, you see those things above your weapon skill bar? They’re called “virtues”. Use them! Warrior, is your patron saint Leeroy Jenkins? Ranger… the heck are you even doing? Get on the stack! It does not matter what profession I play, what build I use, what tactics I employ, because none of you have any clue what you are doing, I am starting to suspect that your proclaimed experience with this dungeon is entirely imaginary, and nothing can save you from yourselves."
Now, I am not going to pretend that I am some kind of MLG dungeon god, but what I am is a reasonably capable player. Heck, I’ve even sneaked my way into some zerker only PUGs in soldier’s gear and had perfectly smooth runs that ended with people saying how we made such good time and even giving me an occasional “gj”.
I haven’t run dungeons for a few months now due to that fact that the displays I too often see leave me feeling depressed. When I do go back I will probably use my guard. I doubt that will make things any easier, but at least it will probably divert undeserved blame.
I did have a thought while typing this though… Perhaps what I have seen stems from some player being aware of a “zerker meta”, and thinking that this means using all zerker’s gear will make them automatically good, without realizing that if they don’t keep their brains on, avoid standing in bad places, and use active defense, they will fail time and time again.
I also only see these problems in the core dungeons. Fractals seem to be relatively free from it all. Perhaps because people take fractals less seriously?
(Please forgive me for the ugly wall of text.)

Gods in this universe (or is it a multiverse?) never amount to anything more than powerful monsters or mages. Nothing is eternal, and everything can be killed and/or destroyed with enough force.

Yes, she is a Mesmer Clothes Horse.

And horse mesmers are far from the only thing on Tyria masquerading as humans. It is a little known fact that Tybalt actually survived the Risen on Claw Island. He has not been seen since because during his short stay on that ship leaving Lion’s Arch, he discovered a side of himself he had not been previously aware of.
So, if you are in Divinity’s Reach and you see across the bar a pretty human girl with compassionate eyes, a short skirt, and a perfect pair of big, round, perky “apples”…

Necromancer Specialization Name prediction.

in Necromancer

Posted by: Nox Lucis.8341

Nox Lucis.8341

I suspect that the Necro specialization will go in either one of two directions. This profession has always been a little trope confused. Necromancers are generally assumed to operate primarily by summoning the dead, while in GW2 that just seems to be a small footnote in this generalized dark-caster’s spellbook. I think the new specialization will embrace and emphasize one of the Necro’s two thematic halves.

“Summoner”: This should go back to the actual meaning of the word “necromancer” as one who calls to the dead for power and knowledge. This needn’t be another “pet class”. Rather, it could focus on wielding the power of the dead internally as a means to protect and strengthen. Imagine the Necro with Guardian-like party-wide buffing power. It could also be fairly called “Invoker” as well.

“Warlock”: This would emphasize the Necro as a dark-caster wielding corrosive black magic. I would expect this to be a selfish yet punishing class that makes better use of conditions and CC, including chill and burn. This is also a nice place for Anet to use some of their new tech such as cascade and taunt.

I’ve been having quite a good time in PvE using this power MM build (that I made with minimum outside advice). I certainly don’t see this as a finished build, I have recently made changes, and I intend to make some more (Sigils). I also tend to change the traits and abilities around when the situation demands it. It has been good for fractals and recently the Silverwastes. I’ve recently started trying to solo dungeons with it to mixed results which may have more to do with me than the build. (I haven’t done much with dungeon solo-ing before.)

in Necromancer

Nox Lucis.8341

One struggle that MMs face is minion AI pathfinding bugs that cause them to sometimes stand in place when they should be moving towards an enemy. These don’t happen just all the time, can usually be broken by Haunt/Charge for those respective minions and are pretty moot for the ranged ones. These bugs are most likely to happen in situations of complex terrain and high player population, and so can be anticipated. These are far from crippling for the build, but can cause problems and do need to be anticipated.
My MM uses Soldier stats in both PvE and PvP to considerable effect, but many others are also viable choices, including Cleric’s, condi, and others.

Buying new mithril and orichalcum tools offers a major gold sink for the game, helping to suppress the inevitable process of inflation. Paying $12.50 for an unlimited use tool puts a little change in NCsoft’s pockets, but also risks a small upset in the game economy. Making the item universal between all characters increases the magnitude of the problem.
My suggestion is to simply put 3 unlimited tools on the single character you are most comfortable with in PvE and have that one serve as a “Designated Gatherer” for your account. This one can be used to kite about maps hitting all the gathering nodes to farm up materials, while the others are only lightly equipped with disposable tools so if one should encounter something like a tier 6 node one can collect it without risk of missing it later.
This would allow you to gather using mostly your unlimited tools while avoiding the tediousness of switching. Ultimately though, I think making tools like skins across the account is a questionable design decision in a game with an economy.

why Charr/Gods hate each other?

in Charr

Posted by: Nox Lucis.8341

Nox Lucis.8341

Well… Looking at those scrolls in Orr, it would seem that after the gods put humanity on Tyria, Balthazar more or less declared them the master race and ordered genocide on the native races. Keep in mind, these are not creator deities, but rather interlopers from another world. They are likely something more like the Mursaat in that they are just long lived beings of incredible power, and not properly “God” (a kind of figure that the GW setting likely lacks entirely, unless you count the Alchemy).
While I honestly think Grenth and Abbadon are both kind of cool in their own ways, for the most part the gods are just terrible. They have shown themselves to highly prejudiced, senselessly destructive, and detached and irresponsible leaders. Upon picking this game up, I made a dedicated effort to learn as much of the lore as possible, and as I went on, I found in myself a growing hate for these so-called “gods”. My reading of them from the beginning of Guild Wars and onwards has left me wanting to kill them too.
Charr need no “gods”.
Tryia needs no “gods”.
