100 is absolutely too much that you won’t be happy when you finally get it.

most festival achievements have been that way, though. I wasn’t happy when I finally maxed out Lunatic Inquisition. I wasn’t happy when I finally maxed out Snowball Mayhem/Toypocolypse/Choir/Wonderland when they purposely reduced the amount of AP you got per completion.

I guess I’m thankful that it isn’t 50AP for Dragon Ball Champion total @3AP per completion, because I’m sure someone there had that brilliant idea.

As for the profession duplicates, that’s because I had to weaken that scoring because the profession dailies were stressing the system and causing bad matches when it came to MMR and party size.

I am not a programmer, I don’t know the feasibility of this.

Would it be possible for the daily system to send a random pair of classes to each client? Therefore, the population spread among classes would not result in these horrid team comps? (I had 2 3-thief teams last night, I know this pain.)

i.e. – the daily system sends a 1 and 6 to client A, meaning it’d be, say, a warrior/mesmer daily. The same system, on the same day sends a 3, 5 to client B, giving them a thief/guardian daily.

Really, I love the class-specific wins, because it gets me to play all manner of different classes. I hate that it pretty much ruins team comps on the regular.

I’ve once (well, twice) suggested to allow winning team stay together for next match if they vote to do so (they could get temporary +value% MMR per win) so those teams which are doing well could be assigned to fight premades after certain winning streak boosting their MMR.

Also to encourage people to stay as winning ‘team’ you could give +additonal points for those ‘win streaks’ when PUG advances.

I thought this was a really fun concept for Random Arena in gw1, and think it could have a place here. Good idea.

By your argument, treants and all GW1 plant enemies are mordrem, embers are destroyers, ice elementals are icebrood, and Palawa Joko is a risen. It just doesn’t work that way.

I’m aware this is a complete aside, (and I hesitate to mention it insofar as the Lore team might actually make it cannon, and that would be horrifying), but do we actually have any background on Pawala? AFAIK, he showed up in Elona and started taking things over until Turai and co. fought him, and he challenged Pawala to single combat and won, then does all the pre-gw1, Turai sealing off Pawala’s body.

I would truly, truly hope that Pawala weren’t a “freed” Risen champion (I feel like it would ruin his character to be just another ED device, I already don’t really care for ED), but I don’t know of anything in the gw universe that can make something persist after death with the strength and intelligence that Pawala is said to possess. Obviously, the Scepter of Orr has some effect on lifespan in humans, but unless Pawala had the sister staff at some point or something…

I’m reasonably sure that Palawa Joko was just an abnormally powerful/sociopathic necromancer that figured out how to turn himself into a Lich. And I’m positive that he’s not Zhaitan’s champion, because he definitely wasn’t around during the last rise (being a pesky human, and all), and his first brush with recorded history was hundreds of years before Zhaitan stirred. He could have tapped into the power of a dormant dragon like the asura did in Eye of the North to give himself that extra power boost, though. Or used a slain dragon champion, like Duncan the Black tried to do.

I just hope:

When we get to the patch on january 13th My hopes are we will get something mindblowing, not just an explorable area with a dragon, but someting truly epic…

Vexx Lair (dungeon?), a dragon (guess?), the dominion of winds(here birdy, birdy, birdy? ? Dervishes? Return to the white mantle and revisiting of the bloodstones… (Maybe even the mursaat, with agony and the ring of fire?) YES YES??

Something like Dry top and Silverwastes just will not cut it anymore… I love the areas, they are nice have a beautiful environment, but we need something BIG

Changing should be a truly big one this time… not adding a little piece, please…..?

I love your enthusiasm, but typically, you look at history to determine the future. ‘the past is prologue’ is an apt saying, I think. Look back at the history of what Living Story has delivered so far, and that is what you should expect for the future.

Any more, and you’re setting yourself up to be very, very disappointed.

I will wait to pass final judgement, but my initial reaction is that this will probably get me to play less.

I currently play to fill out my 10 dailies and progress my monthlies, to increase APs. Now they’re removing monthlies, and only 10 pts from dailies every day. Meaning I will miss out on that initial surge when the month ticks over, and it will make overall AP progress for me less. Not crazy about that.

Furthermore, I don’t need laurels for much more than my my next storage guild’s influence. There’s very few things in this game that actually enthuse me to go towards anymore…I don’t have any precursors, so legendary mats are meh, I already have a pretty large stockpile in case I finally run across a precursor.

I’m settled on looks for all of my characters, so skins aren’t really that interesting, and evidently I’m hard to impress anyway, because I don’t care for the artstyle lately (glorious armor, carapace/lum, garbage gemstore stuff).

Incredibly annoyed with damask, so I don’t really want to keep working on my light ascended.

All my chars are 80, so I don’t care about Tomes. Lol, who needs badges of honor? WvW experience is crap, because ranking up rewards suck. PvP reward tracks are probably the best, but the worst per time invested.

The reality is that I just have nothing to really work towards in this game, APs are/were pretty much it. And now that time investment will be less than a half hour.

I guess I should be thankful, because now I will have more free time, not having to go for monthlies or 10 dailies a day, but I don’t get how this will help Anet.

So to sum up the year:

We had a 6 week break from December 10th to January 21st

Then we had a 4 week break from March until April

Then we had a 12 week break From April to July

Then we had an 8 week break from September til November

And now we are having a 6 week break from December to January

Anet’s total break time for the year = 36 weeks of break out of a 52 week year…

Well I guess it is no wonder why people are complaining about the amount of content… Anet gets more breaks than congress…

Uhm… first of all, it’s just 33 weeks of “breaks” (you counted the three weeks of December 2013 in). And second- everything that gets rolled out after the “breaks” has to be programmed somewhen. I’m pretty sure the ppl @ Arena.Net didn’t just sit around and practicing breaststrokes in a pool filled with money every now and then but put some work in “stuff” we already got served earlier this year or in the (near) future.
I don’t say Arena.Net is doing everything fine and that this game is perfect and doesn’t need any improvements. I also do understand that some ppl are more of less frustrated with the course that the game took. I’d be the first in line shouting “Hoooray!” for new small-scale PvE content (e.g. new dungeons, fractals, etc.) or some rework of ingame rewards.
But ascribing Arena.Net to sit around doing nothing for almost 2/3 of the year is just nonsense and helps nothing.

I believe he meant the last 12 months, and not necessarily the calendar year. They just happen to be very close to one-another.

May I ask why you feel that way? Why have two conflicting or competing things going on in a time period when many people have a lot going on in their lives — family obligations, travel, parties, events — which leaves them with less time to log in to their favorite game? Why not have each release get the spotlight and the player attention that each so richly deserves? And why roll out content (some are suggesting just days before a holiday break) that would be difficult if not impossible to maintain with holiday travel, developer unavailability, etc.? We pride ourselves on addressing issues as promptly as possible, but if an issue arises over a holiday break, it can be very challenging to take care of a problem. (I know this from personal experience: I worked with a server programmer through a full New Year’s Day to address an issue years ago. He was able to get things back to normal, but it was asking a lot to do that.)

Saying “This is what I want” is fine. But is what you want really logical? In my opinion the decision of the two release dates makes sense on several levels.

I will speak only for myself, but I believe that it is actually healthier for the game to have these two patches occurring concurrently. Not only was the way that the last LS chapter finished pretty poor-tasting, and waiting over a month for its conclusion very, very disheartening, but there is also another issue to consider.

Historically, the holiday patches are not new content, but instead the first year’s content. Accompanying this are commonly extremely grindy achievements. The AP hunters among us, or the ones who are even close to a next-AP reward tier, are compelled to do these. Not because we are enjoying it (looking at you, lunatic inquisition regular/snowball mayhem participant/winter wonderland mastery), but because these are one-shot chances at this stuff. We either do it now, or miss out on hundreds of points.

If we had the next patch, then I believe that developers wouldn’t need to unnecessarily pad out the recycled holiday content. I’ve been there, I’ve done that.

Look, I get it if they’re saying that ‘we want to draw out the season as long as we can’, by not stacking these two. That’s fine. Tell me that, instead of saying that we’ll miss out on all this super-duper Wintersday content if we have both at once.

Not to mention, LS2 is all permanent. So, anyone who is traveling too much to do both (…all of the month and more…), could just do Wintersday. Either that or they could just not artificially pad Wintersday for another year. OR they could tell us that they just aren’t in a good spot to come back and push out more content after New Year’s. I don’t really care which, but this facade is pretty annoying.

How about placing an NPC with a new icon in the “main” map for each region, and the NPC would tell you about what you could earn in that region’s track. He would also queue you and return you without having to go through the PvP Panel. Like the activity npc, kinda?

I’d say all the 1-15 areas, Straights of Devestation, and both Drytop and Silverwastes would be a good start. Could expand it also to outside each dungeon, as well.

I think one problem of reward tracks right now is their discoverability. We released the Maguuma Jungle Region reward track with Dry Top, and it gives you keys for chests, geodes for the unique items on vendors, and new skin components. I personally love this reward track being intertwined with PvE as it creates a great reward loop, but not many people seem to know about since it just appeared and looks like any other region track.

Discoverability is an issue, but there are a lot of people who don’t want to go to the effort of going all the way out to Drytop to cash in these rewards, just so they can buy things from a vendor at their now-most-expensive-price since everyone is in Silverwastes and they can’t get high-tier rewards. Would it be possible to add a vendor in Heart of the Mists which accepts the Geodes? Potentially an item in the last chest of the reward track, that provides a buff and unlocks t6 prices for you and only you? Seems pretty obvious that you can’t have the sandstorm chests just hanging out in Heart of the Mists, and dedicated PvPers definitely don’t want to run around during Sandstorm in a PvE map to use up lockpicks, so I can’t help you there. I don’t even want to do it and I’m much more tolerant of PvE than a lot of others.

The new PvP exclusive armor track was also since reward tracks released, but I’m not sure how many players know about it.

I’ll try not to speak for others, but holy crap I hate the look of the Glorious Armor. And knowing that 40ish games are needed to unlock each piece, x18, make it so unexciting I can’t even put it into words.

I’m sure there are ways to solve the discoverability problem. Our main mechanism right now is feature highlights on release pages, but those aren’t in-game anywhere. Perhaps a story-journal style unlock that alerts you to each new reward track release would be more effective.

There should really be a browser-like popup much like the TP that you can open at any time and read up on the ’what’s new!’ items. Would be great to have patch notes, interesting tidbits, things to look forward to.

I think this is actually an absolutely wonderful idea for a very important reason: Ascended armor takes all of the fun out of making an outfit for each character—if I could instead save a look per character and wear my ascended berserker, that would be pretty wonderful.

Still, if the PS now works like the LS, I’m concerned that this means that mobs throughout the PS steps now also don’t give experience.

I can confirm that, for the PS steps I did, they do in fact grant experience. While I do not have stack-sigils on my necromancer, if it is only tied to experience, you should be fine.

However, I would like to give a bit of feedback regarding the lack of drops: with this, and the lack of any gold rewarded by finishing a step, it is quite easy to start losing money now by waypointing to the start of the next storystep. Not sure if intended, but I noticed it, and it was somewhat inconvenient.

Furthermore, knowing that only the end-reward matters, (ie, completing the last step), there is absolutely no incentive to kill any mobs in your way on your way to the end boss. This seems like a shame, because once you figure this out, it ruins the pacing (imo) of the personal story while you zerg through it (the Sanguinary Blade sheath is where I experienced this personally—I had no reason to kill a single pirate on the way, that seems like a waste.)

Any time there is a hotfix patch applied to the game, it seems to remove credit for those who played during the week, unless they play after the patch, but before the next matchup.

What about Aethers? I mean, I know they’re pirates and they don’t necessarily like LA because they’re also pirates (and a separate faction, at that), but they’re pretty much the punching bags that Scarlet AND the Inquest just throw into the mix as cannon fodder—how are they blackmailed into service to this maniac? I mean, Scarlet has a grand plan and all, but I’d assume that most Aether lackeys don’t know this plan, as to keep it a secret, and they reference numerous times how Scarlet will flip kitten if they don’t do exactly what she wants. Sounds like to me, a lot of these pirates would shove off from this entire organization and find another place to pirate it up. But even outside of holopirates, we’ve just seen legion upon legion of skypirates. We slaughter them in (not an inclusive list):

Aether JP
Aetherblade Retreat (and kill/capture their leaders)
Fall of LA/Battle for LA (assumedly)
Around tons of seemingly remote Thumpers that Scarlet said she needed guarded
Around the Marionette for a ‘Weapons Test’
TA Aether Path

It just baffles me that their own sense of self-preservation wouldn’t look at that and say, “ya know what, I think i’ll just go pirating in Bloodtide Coast or Timberline Falls instead”. Fine if Nightmare Court are insane, fine if Toxic Krait were ‘changed’, fine if Flame Legion and Dredge are hell-bent on conquest, but Aether? What could they possibly gain from they systematic annihilation of their entire organization for the promise of a plan’s fruition?

My favorite remedy to the situation was introducing a Mystic Forge recipe for 4x glory boosters that would generate 200% glory boost for the hour that it was in effect (since each booster is +50%), people could actually burn through them, getting more from rank/tourney chests wouldn’t be so detrimental, and nothing is gained over those who have already used theirs, because it all ends up equating to the same amount of glory in the end.

What type of structure would you find interesting for leagues and ladders?
I primarily enjoyed the WvW league more than the upcoming ‘tournament-style’. As far as for the sPvP season, in a perfect world, I would like something along these lines: ‘You have to have played 100+(example#, not concrete) tournament games (team or yolo). Then, there are break-off points in rating/mmr/whatever, and people within the break-off points are their own pool, of moderately the same rating, who vie for top placement. However, there are going to be lots of people who would game that, the same way people gamed the WvW League, by throwing matches. And that sucks. I don’t really have an answer for a good solution.

How long should a season last?
My history is 2500+ Arena 3s&5s/2650 Rated BGs in WoW multi-season, so I can say with some experience that their seasons are WAYYYYY TOO LONGGGGGGGGGGG. By google, a wiki shows that their seasons are roughly 20-30 weeks long. I would propose a length no more than what the last WvW season was, 8 weeks.

What would motivate you to play in one?
I’m hesitantly excited at the prospect for one, but finding a good group to tPvP with is quite an annoying challenge, and this is my biggest issue/worry/anxiety, finding a group of people I can play with for that long. However, the time I enjoyed most in WoW was when my Rated BG group was still together, having 9 other people laughing and joking around with and being largely successful is definitely a highlight of my gaming career.

What types of rewards would you like to see?
Exclusive skins, or access to things PvPers missed out on as a result of being PvPers and not PvErs for the past 2 years, would be awesome. I doubt that will happen, but it’s the dream. Or maybe some kind of voucher that made it so that high-achieving pvpers don’t have to spend gold to obtain rewards for ‘x’ amount of time. That’d be pretty awesome, I don’t really like the removal of glory for gold prices.

How would a player earn these rewards?
Obtaining a certain threshold of rank/ladder position/mmr during the season would be cool. Enough to be impressive, but make it so that you only have to obtain it once, or holding it for a few days. Otherwise, you penalize/threaten people for wanting to play, but not lose their achievement-status, which is a bad route, imo.

How would you encourage players of all skill levels to participate?
Access to exclusive skins based on ladder position (could even have several tiers) would surely get ‘players of all skill levels’ to participate. There are going to be some who jump into the spvp season for skins, or achievement points, or to prove their prowess, but this model does have something for all of those people. Sure, there will be some who will not enjoy sPvP no matter what you do, but you can’t make content to cater to every single player.

Additional comments
While I know full-well that it is largely impossible to have flawless balance in a game that also has RNG elements and hard counters, I don’t believe a season can be put forward while the meta is as it currently stands. Decap engis, even in non-skyhammer matches are unbelievably broken, skyhammer is still a thing, and healing signet is still far too strong. That’s not even including what is going to be broken in the next balance update (not a comment on Developer skills on balancing, but more on the line of ‘you can’t predict every outcome’).

Furthermore, the question is begged of, ‘Do you release a balance patch in the middle of a season?’ On one hand, they are sometimes incredibly necessary. On the other hand, destroying a meta halfway through a season is usually looked on as improper. If you don’t wait, and there’s a highly-broken spec (let’s say Eles get overbuffed or something), and most of the high-achievers are Ele, is that okay? Is the game in a good enough place to do a season? If not now, when? Is all vain?

I am SO relieved. The only patch note I was even remotely happy with was Zealot’s Defense being more accurate. IMO Healing Sig needs something to the tune of 9-10%, not just 8%, and nothing against Decap engi? I would have been sad, because we would have definitely lost Ostrich Eggs, though you may have already.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I know you can’t cater to the whims of one player, but as far as I’m concerned, OE’s concerns are my own anyway, having seen the same competitive level he has (at least as far as yoloqueue is concerned) and I’m not going to be able to handle it if Decap engi isn’t addressed. It’s utterly insane.

crosses all fingers and toes that Ride the Lightning is also included in those nerfs (cooldown wink wink nudge nudge) that will be looked at

this was my first thought as well. Range as well as CD; when thieves can port halfway across the map every 10 seconds, RTL hardly seems like an issue, for a much squishier class at that.

I follow you. And I’m done. You guys can agree amongst yourselves that “fortnight” doesn’t mean 2 weeks, and can, in fact, mean any length of time. Have fun!

You seem to be way more upset about this than the people who actually want it back. Which is kinda goofy. I don’t think any of us are upset, we’d just like more to do, for those of us that got our butt kicked by RNG during the 2 week Fractured event.

There is plenty of precedent, in my opinion, of LS events that lasted a month for those who weren’t able to complete them in the original 2-week window. I think it’s a good precedent to set, honestly…before Fractured, I had completed every single LS achievement they threw at me, but there were certainly some times where it took me outside of the original 2-week window, be they terribly grindy ones, or just not being able to reliably get on the computer enough in the 2-week window to fully finish them out.

Now, you add in an RNG component like you get for fractals, and it’s a rough time for just 2 weeks, in my opinion. I can’t tell you how many times I got the jellyfish-ascalon-volcanic-jadesea set. And that’s RNG. It’s not a system I particularly like, but I understand it from a developer’s PoV. I just want adequate time to wade through the RNG, and I figured since we’re not getting anything else in the next month, why not Zoidberg?

Also, it’s a bit of the player’s responsibility to find out when a living story is ending, not go “I don’t know what fortnight means, how was I suppose to know it’d only last 2 weeks?”

I noticed you have a quadcore, as do I. With GW2 being such a CPU-intense game, and not as much GPU, I saw a noticeable benefit when I unparked my unused cores. If you haven’t tried that yet, might not hurt to give a look:

I guess I might use it s/d LH build in fractals? That’s about it. AW change doesn’t really help me any since I need Dragon’s Tooth in a fire field for stacking purposes, so a ranged AW doesn’t change anything.

as far as the heal:
-not gonna use it solo roaming wvw d/d…
-not gonna use it in ANY type of spvp…I find staffplay far too clumsy and unfun, and it really only helps against spiritrangers or MMnecro? Neither of which are really the issue in the meta right now…
-can’t even really imagine a gimmicky open-world pve use for it, so that’s out too.

my excitement is pretty flat here.

I really hate the response of ‘if you don’t like it, don’t get it’, but being limited availability, and some of them being worth the entirely ‘monthly’ category, it’s kind of a non-starter to me to suggest completely ignoring it. Not even factoring in that Achievement rewards are chests that contain gold, badges, GEMS, boosters, Karma, and a smattering of PvP skins.

Achievement Point chests are, in my opinion, one of the best reward-per-time things you can get, because of the wide range of items that you get that come from them. To completely ignore minigames are to forgo hundreds of temporarily-available APs at this point. It’s completely off-kilter to me that someone would suggest ignoring them.

The reality of the matter is, these need to be toned down. If someone wants to play a minigame after they’ve already achieved all of the LS stuff, it’s because the game has its own merits. That should be the goal, not burning out players based on a tiny portion of what the LS updates should entail.
