Retaliation Punishers fast hitting small attacks.
E.g. A warrior using rifle F1 skill hits you for 7k with 1 hit you deal 300 retaliation damage to the warrior. A mesmer hits you for 3k with 8 hits with blurred frenzy you deal (300×8=)2400 retaliation damage.
Whilst having the retaliation boon you still get full damage taken from skills. As said before Retaliation scales with the power of the wearer of the boon
They wouldnt have to standardize every player but maybe give the option like they currently have in WvW?
I always run with my WvW settings on the lowest for latency purposes and everyone is set to a standard model. I dont feel like the game is missing anything, i still see weapons, if they could make it so that you see the players gear as well then there should be no problem with a black human/sylvari male/female option mode for the poeple that want to do this, without forcing the people that dont want to do this
I disagree, i have gone against powerful necro’s, they were OP with their first buff being able to instakill and glasscannon with 3 abilities. Now they have been toned downed abit, i usually dont struggle against my opponents, and make a great member for TPvP.

These 2 mainly focus on phantasm damage with the ability to easily stack confusion and nice amounts of bleeds on targets. Why staff? Yes it is a phantasm that is based of more damage for each condition of the target, generally i can land up to 10k crits with this single phantasm. Great help when things get tough as well. Pistol shoots hard and often which also makes this safe, they are not AoE, if you find yourself going against large groups, Swap GS for Staff, or alternatively pistol for focus. There are still some perks in shattering with this the first build and to the lesser of the second build, so ever so often shattering can also increase your dps by adding conditions and giving you boons.
You obviously have not experienced to class to its limits. Certain builds fit certain roles exceptionally and on par with other classes.

I never said anyone had said those words, but i have seen that on many forum posts. I am comparing the assumption of DE to shatter builds now, if you had read properly you would see it is a comparison and not a statement.
Some phantasm builds can be braindead spamming boom, win 1v1. That doesnt mean all are in the general direction of that, earlier was a post about a bunker phantasm build, is that also mindless? Phantasm mesmer can be a great additive to team fights if A) the player knows what he is doing and there is some form of teamwork going on.
I dont care how much you try to troll me, it just shows that your level of arguments lack the intelligence to form well thought out points of views. This is also a forum where everyone has a different point of view, beating on other wont gain you any respect.
Using your logic shatter is also mindless playing iLeap, blurred frenzy, mirror images boom massive burst dps. When actually the way people may play is so interactive with their build and profession that it is that synergy that makes them excel.
So far: DE personal preference, if it suits your playstyle and build, you can take it. In the end no one can tell you how to play the game even if they think they are a know it all.

To reply to what i do in situations of iLeap, Mirror Blade and Decoy. If I were to have 3 phatasms up, you should know which one was brought out the earliest and also when bring out phantasms know which ones are least important and can be replaced so you can bring them out first. Use clone generating skills when you can see an opportunity to drain a lot of the opponents healths or to gain a tactical advantage over the opponent.
It is all very situational, but entirely up to the mesmers control, i want to be able to dodge attacks incoming whilst i am in stealth without giving my position away so that i can set up for a burst. Having 3 iZerkers up puts massive amounts of pressure on the opponent, even bunkers, and bring that pressure down can give him enough time to heal or last till reinforcements come.. Then CC’ing, Boon stripping and auto attacking can win you the fight along with active defense, you dont need to immobilize then or gain extra stacks of might with 3 iZerker’s.
Saying DE is the best trait to take is plain ignorant, the only effects i gain from having 3 illusions up is ether fest which i have never had a problem with.
you have to beat 4794 backstab witha steady weapon. Obviously people can cheat this easily…no proof of steady weapon..
@ Nuka: High end phantasm mesmers actually have a sense of what illusions they have out and how many, I already have enough clone productions, and a lot of the times i end up with 3 phantasms up, but i know my cooldowns as well.
Phantasm mesmer is not about spamming, it requires the most focus on your illusions of all the builds. The players must pay attention to what he uses and when he uses it otherwise said player could be wasting cooldowns or crucial DPS.
I have seen the way you post on these forums, frankly the my way or the high way is not very comforting to other members of these forums. Please think before you post accusations like this.

If you read the trait it states, “Creates the shatter effect on you as well”.
It does not state that you are a illusion as well..
So with this trait it adds an extra shatter coming off you, that is why you can shatter with no illusions.
Any skill your mesmer causes direct damage from will break stealth. Arcane Thievery doesnt break stealth, as well as blink(even though visually your are out of stealth, but only allies and you can see that, for the enemy you are still in stealth.), Clones and phantasms do not break your stealth either. Not sure about shatters w/o hitting the person with illusionary persona.
Psych
Illusionary persona only creates the shatter effect on you as well, Shatter strength give you 1 stack of might per ILLUSION shattered. So Illusionary persona wont work with the trait as you only shatter 3 ILLUSIONS if they are all up as well as one extra shatter EFFECT on yourself.
Everyone has their own experience, mine is that i dont feel it as brings much to my build as other traits do.
My focus is on nuking people.
I have never stated that DE is a bad trait, but for my phant build the extra precision and cool down along with the phantasm having fury, help me ensure that i can get that kill when i need to, within the first second of the fight i will have iDefender and iWarlock out, soon the iZerker will follow. if the opponent has not downed, they have suffered a great loss, if a tanky opponent, i will need all 3 of the phantasms to keep the pressure extremely strong whilst still being able to dodge crucial point without worrying about my DPS being hindered.
There will be occasions when you are busy with a long battle and and manage to get 3 iZerkers out, it happens often against

Nuka, not everyone runs a staff/x condition build, not everyone runs shatter build..
For my phantasm build i can have 3 phantasms up in no time and this trait would hinder the build dramatically. If i had to play to survive longer i would be dead, but i have to play to kill my enemy as fast as i can before they get me.
For a phantasm build you have to have a lot more sense of your illusions, when can i use a skill that produces a clone? how long will i be at a disadvantage when this happens? Do i already have a clone out? Are my phantasms almost off cool down?
How about you and i have a test?
It seems like you are playing more of a bunker phatasm build. Getting either blade train or duelist discipline is what i would have done as well. If you go for Blade training you will get a 2.5 sec CD reduction off of blurred frenzy and iLeap which is good as well as +50 precision which you have not really stacked up in you build.
Increasing the range on Pistol to 1200 is excellent as well 4 sec CD reduction off Duelist and 5 sec CD reduction off Magic Bullet.
Personally i would choose Duelist discipline over the other 2 traits
As Helios stated, Sword/Focus is a very powerful combo to play, depending on your playstyle of course. Try figure out if you are inclined more to shatter or phantasms or conditions.
It has been stated before but try to get to level 40 and invest 20 into dueling, 10 into dom if you want a boost of phant damage or 10 into chaos for some extra survivability.
Mesmer it heavily trait dependant, but a beautiful class to play.

Firstly depending on your build, this can drastically hinder your dps.
Again depending on your build, there can be traits that will benefit you much better than this trait.
Again depending on your build, you might already have enough illusion production and taking this could just be a complete waste of your time.
This is by no means a mandatory trait to EVERY mesmer out there, and i would only recommend it to a few builds.
I agree with most of what has been stated by Asuka and Nretep. especially with GS3 of Nretep, Focus changes.
Asukas changes regarding most trait most traits changes weapon skills and portal are essential! As for the elites, Time Warp agreed. Moa Morph, if there is a priority between morph and mass, i think mass invisibility should be categorized as a manipulation skill, also i think mesmers deserve a elite in the place of Morph, such as a phant or mantra, even a signet elite.. but a phatasm Elite would be awesome, one similar to Illusionary Rogue would be perfect(Downed #3/ Downed Phantasm) similar to backstab from thief.. 45-60sec skill recharge The phant attacks ever 7-8(?) (seconds)(un)(traited)((it comes out as sekittenraited wiouthout the brackets :O ) and goes invisible 2 secs before attacking, Same rules of frontstab and backstab apply.

Dwadler has stated it, for Shatter, Condition damage builds this trait is extremely powerful. I have seen numerous mesmers making the mistake of taking a phantasm build with this trait, yes it does keep your illusions on an almost constant upkeep of 3 which is good for ether fest. it does add a little more confusion to your oponents, but i would rather have 2 zerker’s out and 1 defender that 1 defender 1 zerker and 1 clone.

I am not a noob… I know the difference between 20 sec CD and 3sec CD and i also manage my illusions well, when this happened to me(numerous times already) it didnt even for a split second show up another illusion on my Illusion counter…
It may have to do with bad latency problems as well
Nope has happened to me before on targets with more than 70% HP.
Cast, Makes animation, Goes on CD, No Phants..

4. More uses for glory, extra guild upgrades for PvP, more items in PvP( guild glory booster banner, team flag/marker/spray paint logo)
5. Build Diversity, if possible without affecting current builds too much
6. Many bug fixes on classes still out dated and urgent. Many skills may need relooking and many users have giving excellent advice on what may work.
7. i am sorry my list is long, i cannot settle with 3.
8. adding teams(similar to having a guild roster, max 20-25 players per team, have history and logs of games in teams tab(this can be put underneath custom arena tab) there is a need for team management system)

The Sword #3 skill AI is buggy as hell, And being able to use it effectively as a stun breaker is not always the entire intention, most of the time it would just so happen that you sent Ileap JUST BEFORE someone stunned you from another direction and swap. Also if i were to try use it as a stun breaker purposely there is a 40% chance it will actually work. for e.g. Ranger uses AoE root i try use ileap on ranger, A) ileap gets stuck right next to me i use swap and because i am still be the root i stay rooted. it doesnt appear and C)it is the perfect terrain and will work 40% of the time. This is not an active defense and once CC’d you can not use it like a stun breaker if ileap has not been set out.
All i have been reading is how everyone complains about the combination of Shatter and B-frenzy together. What about people that dont have strong shatters. When i read through these post it a all in one build you guys are complaining about which in fact is false information and impossible. Blurred frenzy gives people enough time to react. as mentioned it is mostly used ileap, swap, B-frenzy. Giving you 2 times to dodge and one extra time to screw the mes over. All you do is ileap comes to you knock back the illusion, mes uses swap and B-frenzy where we the clone was knocked back to and thats 2 CD wasted a very very fragile mes left. Practically DEAD already without that abillity already.
By nerfing this(after all the nerfs recieved -_-) You will completely destroy builds and limit everyone to go shatter defensive builds. Build diversity will = 1
Maybe a nerf to the trait is more suitable but what you guys are suggesting is way to much. It will break the sword main hand. There are also way more uses for the sword than just those two abilities. Sword #1 skill i use many times! I dont care what you think about that statement it can help in many situations.

so your saying 4k damage per clone shatter + all the phantoms does less damage than a ranger pet? have you even seen a mesmer side point defender in Tpvp?
im usually at half hp of my 16k after the first wave if i cant dodge it.. love to see my pet pull that off as consistently and as fast as this..
That is for shatter mesmers.. being a different spec i get 3-4k total damage if i shatter all my phants and clones..
this puts me at a disadvantage though as that is my sustained DPS gone.. Even i get nuked down by shatter mesmers if they connect me..Heck that AoE even knocks out all my DPS..
I have a burst combo most people do.. These combo’s are made to eat away at the health of the opposition. This requires me to use 5 different skills as fast as possible though, not only giving me long CD’s but also easily avoidable.. That makes up for the damage it does.
im all for balance.. and letting other classes use their f skill is fine by me.. just dont take it away from me
Other classes would excel too much in downed state with their F skills.. It would also be more technical too add 7 compared to removing 1..
The best way to balance is leaving everyone without F skills in downed state IMHO..
It is not only that ranger downed abilities that are a problem though, other classes need buffing on downed abilities as well or atleast reworking on the downed skills..
TBH i would much rather have it without the downed state at all, although it is a nice twist and can be the reason for your defeat or victory.. I really hate the downed ability when i take down 1 or 2 people and then before you can stomp them, back up arrives from the other side of the map.. Technically a win, end results says different though.

I understand that different mechanics are involved for every class. Yes, pets are meant to be a big part of the rangers damage/mitigation/ Other uses? I am not really keen on going onto pets should be 1/3 of ranger damage and then ranger gets buff..
But, I still think it is kind of unfair you can pull out your full damage(most) while downed. As a phant mesmer myself, They are also a big portion of my damage but their health pool is very low and with long CD’s. My downed state can be very situational being i go down and have 3 Hard hitting phants up, or mitigation phant or even clones. I could end up being with 0 clones up. Every classes mechanics are very much different.
I can not do anything with those phants when i am downed though.. they do what i tell them to do before i go down, and dont you think they care a little bout us as well? i mean I know i have abused my phants and clones and shattered them into billions of butterflies but they are still me..

So, you got kitten by a Ranger, and all that you do is coming QQ here? Pets can’t do 5k with every crit, only cats can reach that damage under some conditions (jaguar in stealth + Pet’s Prowess trait vs GCs). And pet’s are easily avoidable , because their attacks are broken.
If you think that a BM ranger is easy to play, just try it.
This is not about is ranger easy to play or not..no one stated it was easy..

you rarely ever see a ranger actually rally from lick wounds..
I see it quite a lot actually.. Every ranger will stop their downed healing(bandage) ability to use lick wounds as it is far superior. Not only does it istantly revive your pet from being defeated as well as giving it full HP but, it is also like another player is coming to rez you.
I can understand that you like this extra, and taking advantage of it can not be called exploiting.. The matter of the fact though is that this is not a balanced skill.
Even if i tried my sinks and pulls(underwater CC) on the pet ranger it wouldnt interrupt the skill. The only way is too focus and kill the pet when the ranger can just instantly revive it again a few secs later.
F skills while downed and the underwater lick wounds is too OP.. personally lick wounds should be replaced by another skill underwater. On land it is fine…i guess..
Every class needs balancing, i main a mesmer and we just got a PHAT nerf! I am not going to complain about it though.. The more balanced the game the more fun it will be for everyone.
I had a fight with a ranger in the Underwater PvP map, I downed him 4 times in a row without me being downed, his pet ability lick wounds out heals my damage as well as a glass cannon..
@ firebreathz: Every other class has their abilities replaced by down skilled, that means our DPS is also gone. Your pet will still attack as phantasm’s and minions would but necro’s although not their F ability cant control minions and mesmer’s cant use F abilities either, invul/daze would be just as OP in Downed state for a mesmer..

Hey you play what’s fun to you. The focus is on staying alive, yes. That’s what you need in tPvP unless you have a specific focus (like glasscannon backstabbing theives). I find the dueling fun, its when I fight a really good player for half the match that I enjoy PvP the most. Bad players die regardless of your spec anyway. Dying or killing quickly is the most boring thing in the game. I use the same spec in random sPvP because I’m lazy.
Berzerkurderpers melt but sometimes you meet some gems. Like a dagger/dagger Elementalist I met yesterday. Nasty little bugger, but very skilled (he had double my ranking I saw later). We fought for quite some time at a high pace (so many stuns, ugh) but he couldnt kill me and I couldnt kill him either. It was literally about popping the right skill at the right tim. Even when we re-engaged a couple of times people died around us but our battles was epic, lol. Most enjoyable.
Lol soz, i was abit rude there. I have played a bunker mes a couple o times. It is quite nice not to die :P I guess we all just fancy different aspets, it is a completely different game play and fun. I play Phantasm just for some reason it calls out to me. Crafting my own build from scratch was the best part
I too also have some intesive long battles and i t gets close sometime. I would end up have 800HP left just before i was able to use my heal skill against this engi, man was i kitten-ing all over the place
My phantasm build is specced into 20% more health + 50% more health signet so thats phantasm’s having 70% extra of it original health. I see people try to hit them down. The health of them increased dramatically and although it is possible i would not reomment making them your priority target.

I wouldnt say that is correct, shatter mes is still probably the most played build. Phantasm and shatter are equally strong depending on how they are played
Put your first 5 points into Illusions.
Staff is probably overall the best weapon for a Mesmer.
I wouldnt be so blunt, it may be one of the best but you cant say it is the best, MH sword is an extremely powerful weapon for mes as well as the others, it all depends on your build and play styles

Never destroy…The gear and weapon you dont have deposit into PvP locker and the ones you do have salvage and deposit the matts into the locker. You will need them

Loseridiot is right, mesmers only true form of condition application is confusion which the only works if you spam glamour fields onto a zerg and hope someone dies.
In PvP, confusion only does 50% of the damage. No real threat only good if you are going for a bunker build.
I play Phantasms build 20/20/0/25/5 GS and Sword/Focus. This bbuild can be quite demanding on player experience and has a high skills cap. I am currently rank 27 in PvP
Ryn, I am curious to see if this could be another viable build for mesmers, I will try out the build in a PvP environment to test it out as a possible bunker build.

I am considering trying your build, Psych. I just started SPvP, and am rank 7. I was using just some build I made up on the fly…haha. It was working okay, but I know I can do better. I am just reluctant to give up staff, because of all the utility, but I will consider it. Does the focus work well in SPvP with all the movement? I think iwarden would have a tough time, since it’s stationary. Please, enlighten me.

I wont lie to you, staff is an extremely versatile weapon with great mobility skills. having said that, i feel that staff can be a great weapon if PvP if you feel like a shatter build will suit you rplaystyle more. Staff synergises extremely well with most our weapons as well. As a phantasm build though Zerker is much better than Mage and as this is our main DPS our offset also makes a huge difference.
I would not recommend my build with staff, GS would be a requirement as well as Sword with either Sword/Focus offhand or (with some respeccing, very minor though) Pistol as well. I think focus has extreme amounts to offer as not only does it grant 12sec of swiftness every 20 secs, it is also great CC(into the void, pulling all enemies in the area towards temperal curtain) and a projectile reflection wall which can save your life from time to time
The warden is extremely hard to handle(also reflects projectiles) but if you are able to land a solid warden, the total damage it does in 1 cycle far out does the other phatasms. I usually use leap/swap along with Warden to ensure that atleast most of his damage is dealt, Blurred frenzy is also used during that combo, for which you can imagine is quite bursty especially if you Mind wrack afterwards.
One thing why i have to play with focus and every now and then i use sword as well, is i like playing a very fast paced game, the only time i am standing is when i need to capture a point and there is no team mate that is around to capture, my roll usually entails roaming. helping out all over the map.
This build does also have quite a high skill cap, as you focus desperately on landing your phatasms which can be quite demanding when you are going up against blinds.
The battle usually starts off with decoy so i can succesfully summon my defender, this then makes me quite tanky to start with, and then the hurt begins .

taking focus for a swiftness buff is definitely worth it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t fit into this build’s mainline.
Focus is definitely worth the swiftness, granted you have a phantasm build. Personally it would be a waste if it wasnt a phant or hybrid build. I started off as a pistol maniac, tried focus and my game play improved drastically. I like playing a fast paced PvP game, points are irrelevant as long as the win comes our way.
@ Thorment: It is not a sword/sword build. Could work as sword/sword as well as with pistol with 1 trait change.
This build is all about phantasms, I traited into that cause just the 5 in illusions takes my zerker cd from 16s to 12s and my warden from 20s to 15s. Obviously that is a major difference in a phantasm build. The more phantasm you can get out, the more you can shatter and the more DPS you are likely to achieve. The 5 in Illusions also affect the phantasm in your utility, mine being defender(it will obviously also work for disenchanter, decoy and mirror images)
TBH ), I do not see why someone would not take the 5 in illusions, it has so much to offer with such little loss, focus traits? low on health and being nuked by projectiles, through down temperal curtain and watch how people nuke themselves down and not understand why..and all the weapon traits reduce the cool down of the phantasm and illusion summoning skills even more with the 5 in illusions.
Sorry, but i dont see any point in the dropping of any of those.

Here is my current build, Phanstasm. I am rank 27 atm and dont have any problems surviving. Defender is a tank with the traits as well as the signet(which also means you can have better sustained damage), as well as decoy being the best skill we have in our utillities. Phanstasm’s hit like a truck especially if you can get 2 up and as soon as one finishes the cycles to replace with a quick leap, warden, blurred frenzy, Wrack most bunkers would be downed.
