Idea for unique Tournament Type

“One team will have to score 26%+ before the match ends to win” – I don’t quite understand this can you please elaborate more on this?

Interesting idea tho, not sure the line right down the middle of the map would work, as well as the more players a team has alive on their side thing as well. What will happen when one team has 100% of the map and the other team just cannot gain any ground?

I just don't get it...

Yeah the leaderboard is quite lame at the moment. Not even close to a true indication of peoples ‘real’ ranking in my opinion.

Its also so easy to manipulate your own win % to make yourself look good on the leaderboard with a nice big win ratio. Not sure if anet has addressed it properly, but if someone leaves before game is finished it won’t count their lost and thus wont update it on the leaderboard. I think anet said it will still count as a lost to your mmr, but for statistics sake on the leaderboard it does not count. All you see is the wins go up, and the losts remaining the same so your win % looks nicer then it really should be if your playing fairly.

Thus you can have someone with 100 wins 0 losts and probably be rank 5%. All you need to do is just leave before the game is finished, every time. I’ve seen people do this when they know they are going to lose anyway.

So whats the points having wins, losts and win % on the leaderboard when it can be so easily manipulated to make oneself look better then they actually are? It rules these three columns totally irrelevant, and all we are really left with is the ranking column.

Opinions on upcoming rtl change

Psychogene.6780

Why are ppl complaining so much about the RTL changes? Its a positive change for the sake of actual balance, and may force people to you know, think about when they will actually use it and whether to use it for offense or defence.

So in that regard I think anet got it somewhat right, there should be more of a penalty for using it as movement/escape as opposed to offense. I don’t see how anyone can see it differently, the way the skill is at the moment is too much reward for too little risk. This change shouldn’t impact an ele player to much apart from forcing him to become smarter in skill usage, as opposed to random button mashing and switching attunements.

Also this skill makes it a bit to easy to disengage from a fight, and with the balance being in a HUGE favor for ranged vs melee damage, this change is much needed. Now they need to tone down other escape tools if they want to give melee builds a fighting chance.

So for once, I actually agree on this balance change with anet. Now how about fixing up some mesmer skills, such as moa morpha and blurred frenzy?

I don’t think spectator mode will really be anything worth waiting for, not in the games current implementation. You have mesmer with their clones, necros with their minions, elementalists painting the screen with particles and engineers dropping turrents.

What I’m trying to say is theres already too many pets/summons and fancy graphics taking up the screen for anyone who is watching to kind of know what is going on. To make it worst, alot of the weapon/utility skills are just so generic looking in animation or don’t even have any animation to begin with that its hard to know what move was used. This gets magnified if anyone is also playing as an asura.

Does anyone play PvP "Just for Fun"?

Psychogene.6780

For most people and casual pvp players I think playing for fun as long as the game is fun is all they ask for – anything like skins/rank/leaderboards is just a bonus. There’s nothing more fun then playing with friends just to muck around, maybe try things and hopefully get better in the process. It is just a game after all.

For others, the hardcore and those wanting to be good/recognised players, its all about the glory. They have fun too of course, as long as they are winning. Every mmo that has pvp has these two types of groups, and every player that plays pvp for a long time tends to go back and forth between being hardcore and casual.

Personally I play for fun, don’t care so much about my position on leaderboard but I enjoy winning games with random pugs in solo-q. I also like to do premades occasionally but its either the team never communicates, or people rage quit after one lost that keeps me away from sticking to premades permanently because in the end, solo-qing is just alot more fun – win or lose.

At the end of the day people need to remember its just a game. When I quit playing and maybe think about GW2 in about 5 years time I rather remember how much fun I had actually playing the game then meaningless number/statistics such as leaderboard position/rank. People get too caught up reaching in what is in reality a meaningless destination they forget to enjoy the journey.

I think its been said that they are going to bring out seperate queue’s in the ‘future’. Could be next month, could be in december 2013 as well. In the meantime, the pvp community will just have to ‘suffer’ and put up with the game in its current state.

I think what keeps most people playing pvp tho is the game combat is actually fun. Its just a shame everything else that is required to take pvp to the next level is severely lacking, non existant or totally off the mark.

I really can’t understand why they never thought of seperating solo q and premades from the very beginning before even releasing tournament mode. Its like they can’t envision what they want pvp to be and how it affect the people that actually play the game for pvp. It kind of feels they really rushed pvp in this game and never had time to fine tune it and release it with game modes and features that should have been obvious from a design point of view.

So my guess is they have no clue what they are doing regarding pvp, its just band aid solutions atm and maybe forever. I wish there was more input from anet to give us some sort of timeline of say 3 months in advance the progresses they are going to release in pvp.

Games been out for well over 6 months now and pvp still feels the same as day one – that is to say the pvp aspect of Guild wars 2 is unfinished. I have no doubt the pvp would have been thriving had things been moving at a much faster pace.

They want custom arena’s for $$$, quite simply. I’m guessing those higher up in the chain of command have been asking ‘So we got pvp, why aren’t we making any money of it?! Work something out!‘. And thus, custom arena’s was born. It could be hit and miss for anet, but I know one thing – custom arenas wont mean anything if the game is not fun to play.

Spectator mode will be useful for those that can’t get sleep.

MMR? Not sure it exists in this game.

I dont think rank has anything to do with MMR tho, it may seem the 2 rank 41’s you had in your group have low MMR from losing alot to other lower ranked teams, hence they are placed in a pool with all the other people who have low MMR (and most of them will probably be solo-q’ers and casual pvpers).

But still there doesn’t seem to be any consistency in your team and opposition when it comes to tpvp, whether your premade or solo-q. Thus it makes for a somewhat frustrating pvp.

Anet should have never implemented mmr and leaderboard until they have sorted out the basics of tournament mode first. Now the problems people have faced for a LONG time are just as transparent as ever. O well hopefully the more people voice these issues the faster it is solved

How to get better?

Psychogene.6780

This game’s all about communication. And in group fights, its a mob mentality. Outnumber the other team (so being in the right place at the right time is important, hence communication).

Once in a group fight, just work on getting your chain of attack that you have memorized, and have your stun and condition removal ready. The most important thing that happens really is not during the fight, but at the downed stage. At some point someone will get to the downed state (either your team or theirs), you need to work out also how to stomp effectively or rez effectively. This is pretty much the most important thing, and why premade’s do so well against pugs.

I’m expecting nothing positive.

Tho I would love to hear anet’s reasoning on some of its latest addition to pvp, such as leaderboard, balance, class diversity and tournament modes. I also wonder if they actually plan what they are doing regarding pvp, and do they even care to think about how it affects the pvp community as a whole.

Other then that, they will probably buff all the classes except warrior probably because the one anet developer that plays warrior constantly pawns the other anet developers. Gotta stop that happening in the workplace u know lol

8 months since release, pvp still feels like its in beta stages. Thats how much it has progressed. If you played the pvp on day one and quit the game and just came back now, the only thing you’ll probably notice is theres two new maps. Everything else, despite the tweaks, will more or less feel the same.

Lets face it, guild wars 2 pvp is not going to draw an any more new players. Its pretty much hit its peak, only thing I really see happening is people leaving due to the many issues or jumping aboard a new mmo pvp game once its released. The fact nothing has really changed in such a long time proves this more or less.

I hope this can all be changed and anet steps up its pvp game, because at the moment the future isn’t that bright. Granted the combat is actually fun to play, its not going to hold the interest of people looking for serious pvp for that long. Sure they going to add custom arenas, but that seems about it for the foreseeable future. Oh well I got my moneys worth, I just wish there was more to it at the moment then what we currently have.

I wouldn’t worry so much about leaderboard/ranking atm, it fluctuates like crazy at the moment and all it does is promote people to be in pre-made groups to gain a position on the board.

As a solo-q player for most of the time myself the most I can hope for is to go against other solo-q players, coz its just more fun and fair. But as it is at the moment, you’ll just have to find a premade team and deal with the problem of everyone being in the same pool fighting for the same leaderboard.

I’m hoping the change will happen soon tho to seperate solo-q and premades. It has to happen, because tpvp will be alot worst of in the long run the longer its delayed. If it never happens at all, if they never split tpvp up, then its obvious they don’t care about all the complaints (rightfully so too) and don’t care enough to fix the glaring issues of pvp.

Next update for pvp? dreams? Hopes?

Psychogene.6780

Where to begin ???

Hopes and Dreams :-

- Pure Deathmatch arenas – no capture the point, no run the orb just a 3 v 3 or 5 v 5 deathmatch. Since fights are short maybe make one small arena where there are rounds, a best of 5 or 7. Maybe increase revive speed by 50% and stomp by 50% to spice things up. In my opinion pure deathmatch is where players play with skill and matchups as opposed to objectives.

- Solo queue tournament. As in proper solo queue, not lumping them together with premades. In my opinion this is essential to the long term fun and survival of casual pvpers. Maybe having a team of 3 or under qualifies for solo-qing but definitely not 4 or 5 man premades. As long as the current system continues it will not end up well for solo pvpers.

- Premade queue tournament. As mentioned for solo-q one for the serious pvpers and those chasing leaderboard positions. Should be for those who are looking for a challenge against other premades. This is also essential in my opinion. This should be where we see how balanced the game really is and how viable it can be for an e-sport.

- A more relevant leaderboard that seperates premade and solo pvpers. Maybe also a weekly, monthly and overall leaderboard. More information for players on the state of pvp is always a good thing for both developers and the pvp community.

- Class balance and build diversity. So much has been said already for months but the core of pvp, how fun and how fair it can be will always center around this as it does for all pvp games. Striking the right balance is always going to be hard but its no lie warriors need some love, ele’s need a bit less love with their synergy of traits, and other classes probably need to be less gimmicky and annoying (ala mesmer clones, sword blur, moa moarph etc).

- Balance out ranged and melee combat. At the moment, ranged combat just dominates and its not even close. I would love to see more classes have viable melee builds.

Anyway theres like a million hopes and dreams for pvp, I would still consider pvp in beta at the moment, coz there sure is a hell of a lot that needs to be added and changed.

Leaderboards extended to top 1000!

in PvP

Posted by: Psychogene.6780

Psychogene.6780

In the future I’d like to see a leaderboard for teams and one for solo queue, since its pretty obvious at the moment that the highest spots will be fought out between pre-made teams.

In my opinion this needs to be done because for those serious pvpers, once they have an established position on the leaderboard they will never group up with randoms or even solo queue anymore, for fear of losing games and hence the position on the board which drives them to pvp. And on the flip side, casual/solo queue players can stop being cannon fodder for premade teams.

Of course if this was to be implemented there would need to be different criteria’s for both options. Suggestions -

- Form a team with a roster and give the team a name. Seperate queue for teams from solo queues. Maybe even a Looking for pvp group system across all servers to join random people into one team, so that if solo queues want to play as part of a team one can be made randomly (tho obviously wont be as good as hand selected group, would be better then solo-queing if the same group sticks around for at least a few games).

- Solo queue players should have a different leaderboard, based on something else. Maybe just based on win/lost ratio and points scored overall or something. Not really sure here just a different system from the current leaderboard that is more similar to the hotjoin experience would do.

Just a thought.

Even with the increase of people looking for Laurels, there’s probably not enough people doing spvp for the higher rated players to get queues versus similar ranks.

Yeah your right. That speaks more about how people feel about pvp then if the population is this low after the game has been out for only 6 months and Pvp being one of the main game modes and reasons for people playing initially.

Something needs to change with the matchmaking tho. If matchmaking doesn’t work, tournament pvp style mode simple does not work.

And people wonder why aNet have such a horrible time balancing classes, they can’t even get the matchmaking formula to work.

Since march 26th the matchmaking is horrible (to the point where you have to wonder is there even a matchmaking system in the game, because to me its pretty non existant). Whats making the problem even worst is how people are jumping into tpvp for the laurels now – even tho in the longrun it would be a good thing as it will give more exposure to pvp, at the moment its a bit like feeding time at the zoo for high level premades.

I’m trying to understand how the matchmaking works, is there a post anywhere that shows the exact algorithm? My guess is the matchmaking is so basic that its barely passable for the word matchmaking :

- Group up with your own premade (2 or more) will pair you up against another premade regardless of their rank and pre-made size of the team. So its common to see a premade of lvl 10’s vs premade of lvl 40’s – no guessing who this matchup favors.

- If it doesn’t find another premade team, will just gather a group of lvl 40’s and champions solo queue people together, because you know its totally fair that if your a low rank premade to be up against solo queing rank 40’s too.

- If your of mid-high rank and queuing solo, will chuck you in a group of lowbies while the other team has consistantly high ranks. Because it figures your the hero and you can surely take on 3-5 on your own.

Anyway thats my thoughts, matchmaking needs to be reworked with laurels and the inflex of pve players or something needs to be done or else to queue solo is just a gamble.

Maybe its time for 2 seperate solo tournaments – One for rank 1-30, one for rank 30+.

In case people don’t realise – but skins are a HUGE part of guild wars 2, whether you like it or not at some point people are going to be wanting to change their wardrobe because of how dull the easy to get ones are. Another way to view it is getting skins is a form of progression in this game.

So this is an obvious attempt to make some quick cash while offering players who participate no guarantees of anything. Its more like a competition with unlimited entries that is based around gambling principles.

So don’t be lured into this scheme in my opinion. If you got the urge to get the skin but don’t want to spend too much real money, set a limit like they would tell you in gambling addiction ads lol. It is dangerous to think you will just keep going with real money until it drops. That kind of thinking is a precursor to more dangerous real life gambling addictions.

With gold that you didn’t have to pay to get, spend whatever since its not coming out of your hard earned savings. Still, the way aNet have set this up is just to make as much money as possible until the next cool skin comes out, and the next, and the next ….

Maybe trying to maximise profit before all the new mmo’s come out, because GW2 might be a dead game by June or July.

I wonder if anyone here has thought about how the way the fused skins have been implemented will set a precedent for the way skins are introduced into the game in the future?

It seems ANET have already made a decent real money profit from players pretty much gambling away for these skins. While I’m sure some people got lucky and got a ticket or two within a few chests, just like in real life the real profit from schemes like this comes from the addicted (in this case, the gamer who will just keep pouring gold/gems until he gets what he wants).

There really needs to be some sort of compensation in my opinion for people who are willing or silly enough to throw away this kind of money. Maybe have a 1/8 fused ticket drop at a common rate on black lion chests. Would be more fair for everyone because you would have to be extremely unlucky to have opened 100-200 chests and got absolutely nothing for it.

So if this becomes really popular and is a cash grab for aNET, whats the bet all future skins that will be released will become like playing the pokies at a casino? For what is in reality a decent looking skin this will probably be replaced in a month with an even better looking skin, and the cycle continues ….

Devs: "What's wrong with Warriors?"

in PvP

Posted by: Psychogene.6780

Psychogene.6780

It must be a joke the way warriors are balanced in pvp. There seems to be in my mind, clear favouritism with buffing/nerfing classes. And with this patch, just by the fact frenzy got nerfed it takes away alot of the one trump card that makes warriors useful in spvp. Now, warriors just have absolutely nothing that they are ‘best in class or extremely good’ at. Like absolutely nothing at all.

- Nerf frenzy OK, other classes can survive but warriors just wont be viable unless theres a buff to other trait/ability/skills. So many of the warrior traits/ability/skills are just borderland trash for pvp.

- Just look at the elite skills …. when was the last time you ever saw anyone use ‘rampage’. But hey, anet listened and they heard what you wanted – now we can throw boulders while moving! Great for pve maybe I don’t know, but for spvp …

- Also they buffed up banners ‘slightly’. No doubt its more useful for pve, as carrying banners in pvp is about as useless as it gets. Maybe if we didn’t have to actually carry the kitten thing and plant it everywhere we go …..

Theres so much to fix with warriors in terms of balance for pvp. In my mind, and probably many others, warriors is the class that needs the most changes. Instead of buffing other classes and neglecting warriors, hows about anet give warriors the love and attention the class deserves. Its quite frankly sad when the staple class of pretty much any fantasy mmo becomes the one that is a joke.

Despite this, warriors are still fun to play because theres nothing cheesy about the playstyle. A kill is one that is earned. Just a shame the odds are really stacked against them.

FIX IT PLZ! and fix dual sword for crying out loud, this weapon combo should be one of the best for warriors (because seriously, dual swords was MADE for warriors, not any other class) but at the moment, its an absolute joke. FIX IT!!!!

Would it be possible to give different rewards for the solo q 2 man tpvp?

For those that run tournament pvp alot the reward chest gets pretty stale once you pretty much have everything it can possibly drop and since the incentive for pvp is not that great, can we revamp it to include alternative rewards. Maybe something that will be useful for pve?

Suggestion -

10 match win reward chest or 3 gold tournament reward chest – some kind of pve dungeon token or something pve related. You could even let people claim it via the ticket merchant that stands next to the tournament master.

Not gonna say this is make or break for tournament rewards but it would be nice to increase the incentive for those that enjoy this form of pvp. Just throwing it out there in case its never been suggested, which I highly doubt

Makes no sense to switch maps to …. the same map again. Whose genius idea was that?!

As annoying as it is, like other people I’m shocked theres no random map selection in tpvp. At least give people the option to queue up and have a checkbox on which map they want to play on, and then if enough people queue for it have the game start.

Surely it can’t be that hard, pretty much every other pvp game has this option!

If devs are concerned about people running ‘generic’ builds why not add build templates that people can switch before the map starts, that is of course if there is a random map generator in play.

Hey I’ll even be happy if they add raid on the capricorn to the tpvp mix, as long as they remove the underwater part of it (maybe make it solid ice or something). I actually think it’ll b a good small deathmatch type map.

I also think the problem with thieves and mesmer is not so much in a 1 v 1 situation, but in group fights the way stealth and clones work in this game it gives them a great advantage (and mesmers have both).

Its hard enough keeping track of whats going on in group fights, and even worst when you got thieves who are almost perma-stealthed and mesmers who can stealth + clone to take up basically all the screen real estate. Sure there are counters for them but in reality it makes group fights a huge P.I.T.A

4v5 in sPVP solo q

in PvP

Posted by: Psychogene.6780

Psychogene.6780

I know this has been brought up many times, but seriously what is going to be done about the times when you q up and enter a tournament only to find (for what seems like the 100000th time) that its your team 4 vs their team 5. It happens way to often (at least for me, and I’m sure for many others).

If the devs even play pvp at all, they’d know how totally unfair 4 v 5 is in a TEAM ORIENTATED PVP system. This game isn’t designed for 1 pro player who can take on the likes of 2-3 decent/good players and give them a somewhat fair fight. The lost of even one person practically changes the course of the outcome before the match even starts. This also goes both ways, if its your team 5 vs 4 its practically a free win.

Anyway what I really to know is anything going to be done to fix this? Theres a window of 2 minutes before the match even starts, there are many things you can do to prevent uneven team fights. I’ll give some examples of the top of my head

- After 1 minute if the other person is not in, replace with someone else who has queued up. Maybe add a little checkbox in the quick tournament menu that lets them know that they only have 1 minute to accept the invite and that they need to have it checked and if they check it they are available to replace other people who don’t show up. Or even make this automatic for everyone.

- After 30 seconds or so (or even if the game starts) and it stays 4v5 and the other person is not even logged in, why not just abandon the game and put everyone back in queue? Nobody wants to play 4 v 5 unless maybe they are a premade of 4.

So hopefully something is done, because to say it doesn’t happen is to say you will never fix it.
