I’ve been thinking.
Every trinity MMO that comes to my mind (EQ, WoW, Rift, WAR, SWTOR…), is a theme park MMO. And every non-trinity MMO that comes to my mind (UO, Tibia, EVE, and most oldschools MMORPGs) is a sandbox MMO. With the sole exception of Guild Wars 2, that is a non-trinity theme park MMO.
There’s any other exception?

Seeing things this way says A LOT about the good things and the bad things that this combat sytem in GW2 has.

Trinity is not good. It’s a bad system.
The problem with GW2 is not the lack of trinity. Is that we don’t have something better.

It’s just old. Trinity systems had too much success over the past 10 years to be a bad system.

I miss pulling every last stupid pug with through hardcore dungeons as a healer. It’s ludicrous that people here seem to believe this is the opposite of teamplay, but either way it was fun. You are right though, there are probably way funnier teamplay actitivies for a person like me but anet didn’t implement any of them.

Going back to trinity would be the cheap way out.

Yeah, you’re right. Most of the reason that the trinity system is (for me) a bad system is because it’s old. Do you remember when rpgs where about turns and random encounters? We had games with turns and random encounters for years and years too. The only game that survived from this trend to our days are the Pokémon series. And probably just because it’s Pokémon. It was a good system before, but because it was the only one that could be simple and tactical at the same time that we had. Most of the people in our days can’t stand rpg in turns (not strategy rpgs like FFT, but like FF4) because we got better systems.

GW2 had a better system in mind. It was good on paper, but in game is just shallow. Even with combo fields and such (mostly because they’re just a flavor thing, and not something strictly necessary). It’s simple enough to appeal people, but has no team tactical approach at all, because you only need to concern about yourself to be successful in the very most of the situations.

And I do believe that is possible to create a system without the holy trinity that is at the same time simple to understand but deep to work with. But well, not in GW2.

I like the idea, but it needs a way to counterplay it. Like, with supply traps, is just to send someone without supply to run ahead. How it would work with this trap? Only golems would be able to activate it? They would be able to dodge in time?

This. Making a legendary is not only a PvE farm thing. I don’t know from where people took the idea that making a legendary is just a PvE thing. You’re supposed to do legendary deeds in the entire game. And going to WvW is one of them.

It’s funny how Fort Aspenwood, the ex-gold server that thought they were going for a free first spot in silver league against the other servers in the silver league that just can’t be competitive against a server who just dropped from gold, are the only ones complaining about Henge of Denravi.
I don’t see SBI complaining. Or YB. Or IoJ. Or anyone else. I guess it shows something.

Not having suitable GvG is ruining WvW & EoTM

ANet is not releasing GvG anytime soon, for a sole reason: it hurts both PvP modes. WvW and sPvP. Even more guilds and people will be out from WvW to focus on GvG and people from sPvP will do the same once it’s a official thing.

And the problem is that ANet blindly believes that sPvP is the way that small scale organized combat should be done. Is the game mode where balance is worked around. Is the game mode that they most pay attention, even that is the least played. And anyone who played both sPvP and GvGs know that they’re not the same thing.

So, unless they find a way that GvG doesn’t hurt both WvW and sPvP, I can’t see it being released. They may, in the future, release competitive 8v8 no conquest maps trying to bring the GvG players into sPvP, but again, it’s not the same thing.

So, I have no idea how work this around. Any idea about this here would be appreciated.

I can say for myself that I felt no skill lag in the past couple days after the hotfix. And I’ve been in huge battles with zergs from every server.
But some people in my guild are still feeling skill lag in those battles, but not as bad as it was before, where we had 10, 20 seconds of skill lag.

I think they’re waiting until the patch hits to see exactly how much balance will need to be made. So yeah, definetly some professions will be more benefited from the sigil changes than others, but one change at time.

- Rubber-banding for a lesser degree, skill lag for a really large degree.
- Tarnished Coast.
- Can’t remember any sign of someone having and someone not having skill lag in the same party, but sometimes it happens to people in the same map or just in the same zerg.
- I experience skill lag in large zerg fights, almost everytime in large 3 way fights with 50+ from each side. It happens in 2 way fights too. And it seems to happen more when fighting for keeps and towers, where it has more chokes and more numbers being calculated. But it happens too when huge zergs clashes in open field fights too.
- It doesn’t happen just near the zerg. Once I got skill lag in the spawn, when we had a 3 way fight going on in garrison.

What do want in the FEATURE Only Update?

What I want: GvG, Guild Halls, duels, a new approach to WvW, dungeons and hardcore PvE.
What we gonna get: minor subfeatures from some systems (like account bound WXP, new game mode for sPvP), a shake up in the runes/sigils system and minor balance changes.

So, no new big feature at all. Just simple new things in features that we already have.

I don’t miss it. Anet did a good job throwing the holy trinity away. For me, it is one of the bigger strenghts of the game.
But they didn’t a good job replacing by something better. The idea is really good in the paper, but lacks in the execution. No sinergy, strategy or teamplay. It’s a poor system. And it hurts <SO MUCH> every gameplay mode (WvW, PvE, sPvP).

Unfortunately, I believe that we will never have Guild Halls or GvG. Ever.
ANet talked about housing before release. It was 20 months ago. Never heard anything about from them after release. Guild Halls existed mostly because GvG existed. ANet will not release GvG, because it would kill WvW in a certain degree and they blindly believe that sPvP/tPvP is the way that GW2 small scale organized PvP is meant to be played.

I may be pessimist but I don’t have any hope anymore about serious development or great new features in this game.

Remove AoE Cap

I, personally, think that the removal of AoE cap could solve a lot of problems in WvW and even in PvE, but with some other adjustments.

The AoE cap limit what one person can do. If you hit 15 people with one great placement of a AoE skill, it will count only 5. If you hit the same 15 people with a great placement of a AoE skill without cap, it will count all 15. One person damaging 15, instead of 5. Because this person played well.

This could bring more powers to small groups against giant groups, if the players in the small group plays better. Fewer people could have more value. With the AoE cap and no meaningful CCs, sheer numbers are the most important thing. Player skill takes third place, behind strategy/coordination.

But, only removing the cap wouldn’t solve the problem. AoE skills would have to be tuned down, and maybe single target skills be buffed. In the present gameplay, using a single target or AoE skill against one single person makes little difference, because the damage/utility of AoE is as good (if not better) than a single target skill. The player should have to make a choice between a weaker AoE that could do more damage overall hitting more targets, or a single target skill that could do a better damage by itself.
AoE and cleave in GW2, in group fights, are more strong that they should be.
