That is no different than standard profession and race-profession dialogue. Such as when a charr necromancer shouts “Rest easy, servant.” when a minion dies. The only difference is that for these shouts, it’d be like the minions talk back – which an echo did.

I think that’s probably more because the game has a limited voice acting budget than anything. Regardless, you’re right, most things are open to interpretation and we lack the specifics about the precise nature of legends.

But supposing we go with the “if it walks like a Jalis, quacks like a Jalis and acts like a Jalis” explanation, it raises some interesting questions. For instance, how do Zephyrites react to someone with Glint riding around on their soul? How do reverent humans react to someone channeling a servant of Abaddon?

Metaphors aside. There are no moral high grounds. But I see zero instances where the humans behaved with any less “barbarism” than the Charr.

Maybe when they were just defending the land that they were born on, their fathers were born on, their grandfathers, their great-grandfathers etc. from an enemy with 0 interest in diplomacy?

You’re talking like the humans of the Ascalon that got Seared inherited the sins of long dead men from almost a millennium previous.

Anyways, this entire argument is kind of silly. The centaur use human aggression from hundreds of years ago to justify their war for territory and are pure black villains, the Charr used human aggression from almost a thousand years ago to justify their scorched-earth use of weapons of mass destruction and are heroic. Guild Wars lore simply is not a consistent thing, and in hindsight it doesn’t make a lot of sense to care about it that much.

It’s possible that they’re as talkative as the Echo of Turai Ossa, however.

But it does seem that the legends are just spirits being channeled. Which makes Revenants full out ritualists in heavy armor and with martial arts mixed in. Which is far less interesting to me.

If you read the article, it’s made pretty clear that they’re lucid. Mallyx will actually argue with the player in a back-and-forth sort of thing, for instance.

EDIT: Also, the echo of Turai Ossa was just that: an echo, a mindless copy of his ghost. The revenant legends are explicitly not just echoes.

Actually…

The Mists remember what came before, and echoes of those who left an especially powerful imprint on the world of Tyria can still be found there.

I kinda see them, and the Turai echo, as being the same sort of thing as we see in Fractals- essentially a spontaneous recreation of someone as they existed in the past. As we see with Turai and the Fractal entities, being an echo doesn’t stop them from responding or reacting to those around them, and if Dessa is indeed one of the category then they may even be convincing enough to seem like they’re real. Of course, if all that is true I have to wonder whether there’s any true difference between an echo and a spirit… besides that there can possibly be multiple echoes channeled by multiple revenants. If it really does just boil down to the prospect of an infinite number of perfectly copied consciousnesses, ANet may be opening a Pandora’s Box here.

“…to continue the stories of the legends by making them active and aware. "
“A revenant’s legends are not merely echoes of the past but are fully sentient, with opinions and personalities of their own.”

I feel like it’s simpler to assume that you’re actually communicating with the spirits of those who came before than recreations, especially since some of them have already been quite active in the mists previously (Shiro, for instance).

So, Legends as channeled by the Revenant aren’t just unthinking echoes from the past; they’re the actual characters they represent, who apparently still fully exist in the mist and have the ability to communicate with mortal Revenants freely and openly.

Furthermore, some of them are willing to share what they know with present day scholars. The implications of this could be huge. Glint’s knowledge of the elder dragons is no longer lost.

Why place the Dominion of the Winds there at all then? Are the Tengu simply there for background fluff? I think they were all set to be a playable race and Anet pulled back, like Bungie to sell back to us at a later date.

I worry though that with Southsun Cove, Kessex Hills, and Calendon already cleared, how could their home city work now as a starting point?

Well, there’s a Destroyer incursion in their city. So there could be a portion of their city which acts like a PvE zone, full of Destroyers and whatever the Sons of Svanir/Inquest/Bandit/etc equivalent ends up being.

The complete opposite direction...

IIRC Tengu were driven out of Cantha by pogroms.

Yeah, the emperor’s paranoia and obsession with “purity” drove all the non-humans out of Cantha. I think if the Tengu get introduced as a race it’ll be from the Dominion of Winds.

no if they get eaten by a dragon they are forever gone that you can see in hoalbrak
in the shrine of lost spirit it writed (This shrine is dedicated to Owl, who was devoured by Jormag. Although Spirits have been missing before, Owl has been destroyed forever.)

if they are connected to dragons hard to tell but not ina good way becuse they led the norn away from the dragon

the last one is hard but i guess they are a littel in the middel becuse they can go trought the mist but the weaker live on Tyria but they have always be connected by tyria if they dont die

I know spirits can be destroyed if a dragon gets to them (RIP Dolyak), but what I’m curious about is if the Spirits can avoid the dragons indefinitely. The four spirits who held back Jormag were willing sacrifices; can the Spirits eventually be consumed by the dragons even if they don’t choose to expose themselves?

Do the Spirits of the Wild predate or postdate the last rise of the Elder Dragons?

If they predated it, what was their role in the prior conflict?

In either case, are they in danger of being consumed by the dragons as a source of magic or are they safe in the Mists?

My final question doesn’t have anything to do with the conflict, but it’s something I’ve wanted to know for a while: are the Spirits beings from some corner of the Mists originally unrelated to Tyria (like the human gods were)? Or do they have an innate connection to the world?

I understand that there likely aren’t concrete answers for some or all of these questions, so feel free to speculate.

Yeah. There’s a fairly strong market for conflict and drama, which some people carry over into games. I’m not sure if they realize how much of that stuff is just an act.

Applied Fortitude and Strength to be removed

plz downlevel ascended weapon, ascended armor and legendary weapon. New players got no chance again vet players.

That’s fair everyone can get it with grinding out …. oh wait.

The question you all have to ask yourselves is do you want WvW to follow the same ruleset as PvP? Only certain stat selections, no food, no consumables, etc.

The new WvW advancement system is basically an anti-NPC and siege ability enhancer (note, siege could just work functionally with increased damage, AoE size, range, or abilities without any additional WvW ranks). In other words, if you are ANet, why would you stop at Strength/Fortitude stacks?

EDIT: Would be nice for the WvW designer (Tyler Bearce) to stop on by and give some thoughts on design choice by axing this without compensation elsewhere.

… “players at the top ranks have a large advantage due to having spent points in powerful ability lines. . Tyler said that the WvW team also felt as though many of the lines needed to be changed or removed to be more useful for WvW.” … implies that more WvW mastery ranks will be killed off.

Personally, I’d like WvW to be unfair and breakable. It’s one of the few havens for whacky, broken builds these days. However, I’d like everyone to have equal opportunities to break it and make their opponents cry.

What that means is that I don’t think that some of the unfair stuff should be locked behind WvW ranks. Let build skill and innovation be the driving factors behind success, not whether or not you have enough ranks.

Are Asurans Carnivorous?

in Lore

Posted by: Pyro.4765

Pyro.4765

I know, strange question, but let me say why I think this.

1. They developed as an underground race – where there’s no sunlight. In such places, most, if not all, animals are carnivorous – with lack of edible vegetation.

2. Their teeth are all pointed and piranha-like. They have no molars in any of the models.

3. It’s only recently they’ve been brought to the surface, so it’s likely the idea of trying to use artificial sunlight to grow plants would be relatively new to the species. Also, becoming omnivores doesn’t happen overnight with any species.

In short, I think they are, based off what I know of them.

Is there any dialogue in-game talking about their culinary tastes?

I just remembered that there’s a potato farm near Rata Sum. I don’t know if that means for sure that they eat plants (perhaps potatoes are the perfect flora for experimenting on), but it does mean it’s a possibility.

My contention is merely that the origins of the human charr war are much older than the searing, and netiehr side is innocent. lets leave it at that, saking for vengence on the charr is just going to continue a war of massacre and counter massacure that’s been going on for centuries already, which does no one any good, especuially during a dragon incursion.
P.S. While the charr did take their land from the grawl before them, the difference there is they never tried to completely remove the grawl. You’d still find grawl tribes living in charr territory, you didn’t find any charr villages in Ascalon under human rule.

I’m not saying that I want the war to continue because that would be stupid. No matter how much I think the Charr are in the wrong, the best word to describe their species would be this: necessary. They bring the hardware, the bodies and the bloodlust needed in the war against dragons. I just wish something would wipe the smug self-satisfaction off their muzzles, and know it won’t happen because they’re a playable race now.

I wouldn’t say one of the easiest, but that’s because most classes I’ve tried are stupidly easy to play. I wouldn’t say engineer is objectively hard but I would say it’s one of the harder classes in the game.

Even ignoring that contention (and, for the record, I do favor the frozen in time interpretation to the always equally applicable one) there’s still Arah explorable, which to my understanding is what Slowpoke is talking about in that quote. That, no matter how you look at it, is after Zhaitan’s defeat, and there are still loads of average (albeit dungeon-scaled) risen running about.

Arah explorable is most certainly post-Zhaitan. It’s also the one area to show the immediate impact of his death; the sky is clear and normal, rather than choked with smog. The instance confirms that the risen did not change in any discernible way post-Zhaitan, but the environment did.

Because of this, I think it’s safe to favor the frozen in time explanation for the bulk of Orr. Most of the world is frozen in time as well; there are no significant, permanent changes to areas after significant events occur. Except for Living Story things, I suppose.

You clearly need to look at that lore more closely. Ascalon was built by humans ON CHARR LAND. they didn’t just come in and conqour the charr living there, they ETHNICLY CLEANSED the entire region. What do you think happened to the displaced charr?
Those that did not die fighting. They got shoved north to the bloodlegion homelands, but that land was already occupied.
The charr were a bronze age tribal society back then, you can’t just double the population in their remaining territory. Those charr that survived expulsion from ascalon either killed a northern tribe and took their space, died trying to do this, or STARVED TO DEATH.
The charr didn’t attack ascalon out of malace, they attacked it to take back land taken from them, and to avenge an entire GENERATION of their people massacred by humans.
The humans sowed the wind, they should have expected to wreap the whirlwind.
Charr killed civilians, and enslaved human prisoners for brutal forced labor, Humans as recently as the events of guild wars 1 used to skin dead charr and use their hide for suits of armour.
Two wrongs don’t equal a right, but right now the scores are even at one genocide a side, and I’d really rather the war stopped there rather than cause any more.

Well, first, Ascalon had existed as a human kingdom for a loooong time. The people who got killed in the Searing had nothing to do with the human push into Charr lands.
Second, the Grawl had control of the land before the Charr. The Charr just had what they pulled on the Grawl done to them by the humans.
Third, the Charr largely did attack Ascalon out of malice and the urgings of the Titans. The assault on Ascalon wasn’t some inspirited and righteous push to reclaim a fallen homeland (which wasn’t even theirs to begin with), it was just the first step in a general push towards wiping out humanity.
Fourth, dialogue from GW1 (for instance, Pyre’s) seems to demonstrate that the Charr’s goal was not to conquer Ascalon but to ruin it. They didn’t even intend to use the land productively, they just wanted to salt the earth and burn the fields.
Fifth and finally, the Flame Legion and the Charr at large were mostly inseparable for a lot of history and the taking of Ascalon was the work of Flame Legion magic. The Charr always seem to want to claim glory for taking Ascalon while shedding responsibility for the actions of the Flame Legion, and I think that’s fundamentally hypocritical. Especially when their justification for the invasion is the sins of humans past.

Eh, I do PvP reward tracks for these sorts of things because I’d rather not farm at all. It would be nice for me if they changed it slightly to make it a complete alternative to farming. Or if geode flood is a concern, cut out the geode rewards and include a recipe with the final chest.

Since Guild Wars, as lovely as it is, hasn’t a niche as it were specifically for role-players, I took it upon myself to make up a little spot where we can easily create our lovely characters descriptions (as detailed as we want), write out their entire histories and share their stories and journals if we want and upload character screenshots, screen manips and even character artwork!

It’s just fresh and newly made, it may grow compared to what is needed, but right now it has all the bare bones to start building your characters in ways the beautiful avatars weren’t enabling you to do.

So, please stop by, takes only a second to register and then get on there and start posting! It’s open to EVERYONE, all severs, races, guilds etc.

Depends on the region they based the design off of.
For example a simple google search yielded many images of a “head” heavy tree frog, and many more of a “body” heavy tree frog.

All in all, this is a fantasy game.
I do expect some unreal elements to show up in some minor places.
But one cannot deny the origin of influence.

I don’t think it matters so much whether they’re based on something real or not, or how closely they stick to their source. What matters is how the end product looks, and I believe it looks jarring and like something out of a cartoon.

You’re right, they shouldn’t. Veteran players should be more skilled and practiced in WvW and therefor have an advantage over new players. I don’t see a reason to artificially inflate that advantage with a stat buff. Unless you’re telling me you’ve learned nothing that could give you a leg up over less experienced players in WvW then you shouldn’t need applied stats.

I personally disagree. I do not own it nor will I ever own it personally but this is an mmorpg. Not everyone will have everything. People who play the game a lot and have nothing else in the game to do makes it a great goal. There will always be in every single mmorpg these armors or weapons that a small percentage of the players will have. If you want it you have to earn it, yes you’ll need to farm a lot of events for gold or play the trading post or get lucky with drops. But that’s the game.

I believe that’s true for skins and other cosmetics, things which act purely as status symbols and badges of dedication to the game. But when it’s a functional piece of gear? Something a build might need to be competitive?

I don’t think it should be any harder to obtain than and of anything more than commensurate value to similar gear.

What I’d like to see is underwater weapons being adapted for land use. Few reasons for that:
1. This fixes the fact that the game has a lot of end game underwater weapons that are currently mostly useless due to a lack of end game underwater content.
2. The models are all already in place, and this change would in fact allow a lot of really quality but currently unknown/unappreciated assets to be enjoyed by the player base at large.
3. A decent number of the underwater skills can be ported over with some adjustments.

So i was looking through tera’s aesthetics and it blows gw2 out of the water…

http://tera-forums.enmasse.com/forums/art-media/topics/Show-Off-Your-Character?page=250

can we get cool stuff like those in tera? less plant and risen stuff.

Gotta say, not really digging the fact that almost that entire thread was sameface elves/“demons” (conventionally attractive humans with horns). I would really prefer GW2 not move in this direction, as there are enough games out there that cater to this sort of thing already.

This is exactly like my girlfriend! She cannot STAND that quest. It bums her out so much. Had to do it for her.

I can’t tell if I feel like that makes you sweet or if that makes me feel like you’re terrible.

10 years later, I still hate the Charr for what they did to Ascalon.

Just wanting to let you know that you’re not alone in that.

My personal confession is that I can’t complete my map because of this heart:

Even if they’re virtual, unthinking and unfeeling pieces of code I can’t bring myself to take baby dolyaks away from their families.

Edit: A third confession, I silently judge anyone with a world completion star next to their name because it signifies both that they support the Charr legions and that they abuse baby dolyaks. I really need to dial back my roleplaying instincts.

RATE the Revealed Elite specs best to worst

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Thematically:
1. Reaper – The scythe looks insanely cool, the movie monster concept traits are awesome, the creepy “angel of death” look is superb for necro.
2. Chronomancer – I’ve always enjoyed the surreal aesthetic of Mesmer and chronomancer doesn’t dissapoint. The clock-wells and intricate timepiece shield are both of a high visual caliber and time manipulation is a very resonant ability.
3. Dragonhunter – I’ve never found Guardian’s “blue, light and blue light” aesthetic especially appealing. I’m disappointed that they took an underwhelming half measure in carrying the dragon theme into the spec’s look, occasionally tossing it on (like with the longbow skin) and then inexplicably excluding it (like with the wings). I feel like they really missed an opportunity to communicate the whole “witch hunter” thing through the spec’s appearance, leaving us with something that looks like a mix of default guardian and dragon worshiper accoutrements.

Actual gameplay:
1. Dragonhunter – The specialization looks like it might fix the two biggest problems I have with Guardian: virtues and the scepter don’t excite me. Getting a new ranged weapon and more dynamic virtues is a huge plus for me, perhaps enough to make me switch mains for a while.
The trait line looks pretty sweet too, at least for PvE; if you Justice a crippled enemy, then stand between 600-900 units away you’ll get a 35% damage boost. Pair the line with Zeal and your Symbol of Energy can be another 30% damage boost. Taken all together, it’s almost like you’re critically hitting on every attack.
2. Chronomancer – Maybe broken. Maybe gimmicky. In any case, this certainly looks like it may have some of the most unique mechanics of the specializations, and I sure as hell want to try it out for myself.
3. Reaper – Unfortunately, as cool as everything looks, a reaper is still fundamentally a Necromancer and Necromancers aren’t my cup of tea. I enjoy neither their selfishness nor their profession mechanic and weapon sets.

tl;dr From coolest to least cool it’s Reaper>Chrono>DH. For functionality the reverse is true.

Pvp Poison community

I’d say I’ve been in more nice PvP lobbies than mean ones, though I acknowledge that’s anecdotal and not necessarily indicative of a larger trend. However, it’s hard to make any easy and unbiased measurements about the community from my vantage point. Given that, I can only give feedback based on my personal experience alone. As such, I’d rank levels of toxicity from least to most something like this:

WvW<PvE when things are going well<PvP<Forums<PvE when things aren’t going well

WvW being people are helpful, talkative, work together and even do things like say goodnight. PvE not going well being a lot of trash talk, abandoning at random, racist epithet and generally petty and spiteful behaviour.

Elite Specs = No Diversity?

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

This is one thing I’m genuinely concerned about. The Elite Specializations are nice and all, but at this point I feel like everyone is going to strive to be that. We won’t see diversity in class builds anymore.

It will depend on the specialization in question and the format, probably. Unless the new weapons or profession mechanics are in the realm of upgrade rather than sidegrade it seems doubtful every build will want them. I think this is especially true considering that most builds in this game prefer to capitalize on a single sort of skill or mechanic, and needing to invest trait points for an elite specialization could carry the risk of diluting that build’s primary focus.

The only spec I’m currently concerned about at all is the Chronomancer, because one trait point is a small price to pay for the powerful and unique ability of resetting and refreshing yourself. I think it’s likely that if this is a serious issue that it will be rectified during the beta, although I also acknowledge the possibility that things might take a long time to get fixed as they have with the current trait system for some classes. Time will tell (har har har).
