The worst are Instant Repair Canisters. They can make black lion goods boxes feel like a bad thing.
No offense but it doesn’t really set you apart, bring prestige or let people know you’re good to have Eternity at this point. Maybe around launch, but now everyone with a credit card and too much disposable income has one. I’ve probably seen more bad players with it than good ones, although to be fair maybe they were using Sunrise or Twilight.
That, of course, is the other problem. People are only going to know that it’s Eternity if they’re watching you carefully or if you explicitly link it. That doesn’t seem likely in a zerg situation.
Do what you think looks nice and what you think would be fun. In a massive, largely anonymous online game your opinion on yourself is more important than what others think when they see you anyways.
I don’t think it’s a problem, even though there are different numbers of eaters for each type. I’d rather ANet changed it so it was a set amount each day; I’m more annoyed by the variation between 150 consumed (minimum I’ve seen) to 300 (max).
I’d also prefer to see more uses for them, rather than just eaters — those don’t offer much value besides a few more bags to open.
You don’t think there’s a problem with the only Empyreal eater being exclusively available for people who can log on during the holidays?
No, I don’t.
Eaters generate very, very little wealth, roughly 16 silver per stack. They are a bone thrown to us so that we don’t feel we have to toss stacks of mats. If you have too much to store, you can delete the stacks, without losing much of value — the time spent storing/managing, eating, opening, salvaging, and selling could be devoted to grabbing a few more flax or rich iron and earn more.
I think it’s fine if ANet wants to create another 10 eaters and I think it’s fine if they never create another one.
From an economic standpoint, sure. But as you said, these were introduced not because deleting the materials is bad, but because for many players it feels bad. I know that if I didn’t already have mine then I’d hate having to wait months to clear some of my inventory, especially if I was a casual player. I think most things done by most players in this game aren’t what’s economically viable, but what they enjoy. And there are certainly players who’d enjoy getting an Empyreal eater outside the busiest month of the year.
what about a “Bad Taste”-Gemstore opening with winter outfits in the summer etc.?
But that’s the gemstore every day :^)

We have three bloodstone dust eaters and two dragonite ore eaters.
Only one empyreal fragment eater?
I have tons of these things cluttering up my bank still.
But you can use the one several times.
You can also use 3/4 of other eaters multiple times.
Related: I’d also like to see eaters for the HoT map ascended ingredients, like Airship Oil. It seems strange to add a bloodstone/dragonite eater to the latest patch rather than anything else, considering Herta and Princess are the most accessible eaters.
What do you consider ascended gear to be worth, by the way?
To me, ascended gear is just a bonus. At least for now. But hasn’t there already been a full suite of ascended gear released through other means? I doubt that the new stat combinations are that much more powerful than the other ascended gear already released.
Viper’s is a significant upgrade over Sinister for the builds I’d like to run.
I would like to pop in and say that viper does not make sinister completely irrelevant. It is only your choice because the game is not based on vertical progression.
In the same way Sinister didn’t make what came before it completely irrelevant. But in a high level fractal I’d prefer to be doing the best that I can, and I’m sure the people I’m doing it with would agree.
Fair point but it is not like everybody needed to reach high-level fractal just like you are not required to complete raids.
You’re right on that front. And so it really doesn’t make much sense that they’d put gear which is only really useful to high level fractal players into a repetitive open world grind. It’s bizarre that the reward for this kind of content is only really useful for another sort, and requires that you invest a lot of time into the mode (open world PvE) that you as a high-level fractal player presumably don’t care much about. Of course it’s all optional, but it’s also not a very logical way of structuring things.
What do you consider ascended gear to be worth, by the way?

Here’s the other thing that’s been bugging me: do you really need ascended gear, unless you’re diving into fractals? As I recall, the gear tiers before fractals were normal, fine, masterwork, rare and exotic. Is ascended really that much higher than exotic? I’m pretty sure you can run around the jungle just fine in rare gear, which is pretty easy to come by these days. No one is forcing you to get ascended equipment; it is a completely optional level with slightly better stats that is a reward for dedicated action. If ascended gear were handed out like candy, it wouldn’t be worth anything. Please keep that in mind before complaining about grinding for gear.
Right, but for people who are diving into fractals it is a problem.
What do you consider ascended gear to be worth, by the way?
So… just don’t do it?
That’s what I’d usually say, but these pieces are – to my knowledge – the only source of certain ascended trinket stats outside of the raids.
^This, if you don’t raid and want your HoT Ascended stats, it is currently your only option.
We’ve survived for months without these prefixes. What’s the rush to get them in 3-4 days? I’ll do some story, some gliding (which is, for me, a fun way of getting the unbound), and whatever events I run across. I won’t be first (or even 1,000th) to get these items and that’s just fine with me.
So to rephrase the OP’s point:
To nice things quickly, you have to grind in this game… and pretty much any other.
I think we have different ideas of grind. To me, logging in and doing half an hour of repetitive, boring events every day for a month is just as grindy as marathoning those events over a weekend. In either case it feels like a useless slog.
I do think that there’s good fun in collecting the magic, but the rubies offer you the choice of zerg events, mindless gathering or stagnant dailies.
Probably an unpopular opinion here but my biggest wish is getting rid of mastery points altogether. Filling up the exp bar for the mastery should automatically unlock it. I am not an achievement hunter in any MMO, they are tedious and boring. When I play I want to do other things. I only unlocked masteries I needed for story plus unlimited gliding and autoloot. I don’t even bother with ther rest because I will never have enough mastery points. -shrugs-
Interesting. I’m the opposite, I’d rather purely require points and get rid of the EXP grind. When I need to do unique tasks and explore to earn mastery points, it feels like I’m actually accomplishing something and “mastering” the game. When I need to run half a dozen stale meta events with boosters to unlock a single tier, it feels like I’m wasting my time.
No.
Please don’t waste resources on this.
I think it’s hard to call anything that makes a company significant profit a waste of resources – really, it’s something that increases the available resources. I haven’t and won’t ever wear skimpy outfits or gem store cosmetics, but these are a large source of the game’s revenue. If this kind of thing allows them to maintain a larger staff and widen the budget, I can keep my aesthetic complaints.
2. Well, the number one difference is that it completely breaks immersion.
More so than albino macaw-winged Goku Charr in Dwayna outfits? More so than neon pink mustache afro Norn with The Dreamer? SAB items?
I appreciate immersion, but GW2 is a bit too far gone for “immersion-breaking” to make good criticism for an idea. The game already contains far sillier extremes than bikini warriors.
So only partially related, but here’s a thought:
Considering that the only way to initially get into Bloodstone Fen is by completing LS3 episode 1, will the map become locked out for players who miss out on it now and don’t buy it in the future?
I think that might hurt its long-term population, if that’s the case.
So… just don’t do it?
That’s what I’d usually say, but these pieces are – to my knowledge – the only source of certain ascended trinket stats outside of the raids.

I said 100 hours because in this day an age most 60 games can be beat under 50 hours. If you can get 100 hours or more out of a game with no subscription fees you already have your monies worth.
But that isn’t a good reason to buy an expansion which will quite possibly give you less than 50 hours. And for all the $60 games that can be beat in under 50 hours, there are $15 indie games and free to play games with hundreds of hours of play time.
Here’s my math on the Ultimate pricing:
Character Slot: $10
Mini Revenant Rytlock: $5 (based off normal mini pricing not considering exclusive factor)
Revenant Finisher: $10 (again not even considering exclusive factor)
Mordremoth’s Bane Decoration: Nothing like this in game so I’ll just say $10
Glider Skin: Nothing like this in game so I’ll just say $10
Gems: $50
Expansion itself: 40-50, I’ll even say $40 for the final number$135 then by my math, not counting the base game. So we aren’t being cheated, it’s just new players get more
Well, the problem with that is that I wouldn’t consider a mini to actually be worth $5 of my money, nor a finisher $10, nor a glider skin $10, nor a decoration $10, nor gems $50. So for me it’s like paying $50 extra for what I’d consider to be at most a $15 value.
They’re making the package seem like a great deal by throwing in things which they themselves dictate the value of. It’s like when an infomercial advertises that what they’re offering is a $300 value when half of that is composed of automatic toothpick dispensers and other things you’d never reasonably spend your money on.
(edited by Pyro.4765)
Well, that only works if you think $50 in gems is actually worth $50, or $25 for that matter. Also, comparing games to things with some of the worst entertainment value for your money around isn’t exactly saying a lot. Even short, overpriced video games can be made to look good if you compare them to going to the movies a few times.
Paying $100 for an expansion+guff is even worse value than paying $50 for purely an expansion. Also, I’ve said this before but it bears repeating: the original game being a great deal doesn’t make the value of the expansion any less bad. You aren’t under any obligation to give a company money for little product just because they gave you a lot of product for your money before. It doesn’t make sense to do.

For those that missed the E3 stream on guild halls, just the guild hall content alone I would have payed $50 this is going to be amazing. Stop complaining about the price and whether new players get the core game free and watch this.
How much of your guild hall will just be empty, unused space? How much variety is there in the decor? How robust are the buildings and new crafting option in practice?
We really don’t know enough to make an informed decision yet. You have no reason to believe this will be amazing. What you have is a carefully manicured commercial and a well-rehearsed pitch, each created with the sole purpose of leading you to believe the product is as exciting as they can get away with.
It might create an entirely new community within the game.
It might be useless and dead.
There is no compelling reason to suspect either. Please be reasonable about this and don’t jump the gun.

Be happy that you aren’t paying $$$ every month AND $50 for an expansion. I think $50 is a reasonable price and is in no way greedy.
Nuff said
See, personally I feel like sub fees are a terrible idea and I wouldn’t touch a game that had sub fees. So maybe what you’re saying means something to people coming from other MMOs, but as someone coming from other types of video game it feels like you’re saying “this is the sort of game you’d like to play, so the price is reasonable.”
And that doesn’t make much sense to me. Also, ending what you say with “nuff said” sounds like you treating your opinion as fact and trying to shut down different opinions.

To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.
I agree with what Black Box said earlier. You’re really pricing this as if we’ll get just as much value out of Heart of Thorns as we did out of the base game? What compelling reason do I have to purchase your product when I could buy a relatively new AAA game for the same price?
Seriously, what the hell? I’m almost impressed how quickly you’ve managed to reverse my opinions on your company. Guess I’m not giving you the money I’d set aside, lol.
I mean, warrior is just the weakest class in the game
It really isn’t, in any mode.
However I think the Asura will be the least prejudice of the races in this respect. They believe in science and the eternal alchemy. So rather than hating all Sylvari they would just make calculations on the potential for corruption. They might experiment on them more often though. Seeing corrupted Sylvari as a challenge for them to revert through experiments.
I’m not so sure about that. They see the Skritt as something that must be purged because of what they’re capable of; Skritt don’t even have a mystical predisposition towards evil.
Quote? They definitely experiment on skirtt. Partially because of the hive mind intelligence they have.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Those_Sneaky,_Sneaky_Skritt
“The skritt and the asura have long been enemies, beneath the surface of the world. Fighting over territory and resources for generations, the two races have perpetually been at one another’s throats. Commonly, the asura had the advantage—an asura, after all, is every bit as smart when alone as she is when she is with others—but the skritt reproductive cycle is faster, allowing them to retain their numbers even as the asura eradicate them. This leads the asura to massacre skritt as rapidly as possible, arguing that if they didn’t, the skritt would quickly overpopulate and be a massive threat to the civilized world.”
“Since then, the asura have renewed their war against the skritt, entreating other races to eradicate their furred enemy as well. Some races (such as the charr) are more than happy to do so, seeing the skritt as a pest to eradicate. Others, such as the humans and the sylvari, are more willing to talk to the skritt and make alliances. The skritt are often eager to do so, and more or less trustworthy…as long as they stay in a group large enough to provide sufficient brainpower to remember the conditions they agreed to respect. "
So here’s a question: could the Elder Dragons follow the player races into the mists? If all hope is lost would they be a safe retreat for the world’s civilizations?
Of course going into the mists would give the dragons a clear shot at the gates and make returning to Tyria likely impossible, but would leaving the world be a viable last resort?
However I think the Asura will be the least prejudice of the races in this respect. They believe in science and the eternal alchemy. So rather than hating all Sylvari they would just make calculations on the potential for corruption. They might experiment on them more often though. Seeing corrupted Sylvari as a challenge for them to revert through experiments.
I’m not so sure about that. They see the Skritt as something that must be purged because of what they’re capable of; Skritt don’t even have a mystical predisposition towards evil.
The rooftops of the Ossan district will never be the same without you.
RIP dear friend
I’m a big fan of the Brisban Wildlands. There’s a nice variety of enemies and you can see the player cultures interacting in big, meaningful ways. You can see hints of what’s to come later in the game with the passages to the Maguuma Wastes. There are nice shoutouts to GW1, as well as some of what I consider the coolest new stuff in GW2 (like Skrittsburg). I also like most of the heart quests and events.
The one shameful thing is that it lacks a JP.
distancing themselves from the kitten Party.
What sort of barbarian would distance themselves from the kitten Party? Who doesn’t like fluffy widdle cute things?
In all seriousness, you’re dead on with the “clean wehrmacht” thing. A lot of people talk about how the German army during world war II wasn’t ALL bad, but the truth is IIRC there was only a single recorded incident of the wehrmacht trying to prevent an atrocity vs countless instances of cooperation and direct participation.
Similarly Ascalon is better off under Charr rule (Ebonhawke notwithstanding) than being torn to shreds by constant war.
Is it really, though? The Charr seem to be on a one-way train to ecological disaster. I mean, their junk yards spontaneously generate toxic oozes, they have to tear up huge regions of forest to fuel their furnaces, they have to tear up huge chunks of earth for the iron of their fortresses, and I seem to recall there being a Charr in the Black Citadel’s smelter district asking the player if they’ve experienced any sorts of disease symptoms after contact with the smelter. Plus they only eat meat (with a fondness for beef specifically) and almost everything they build is constantly belching black smoke into the sky in massive quantities.
Honestly if you are going to complain about the writing this is the wrong subforum for you.
lol, isn’t this the subforum for the game’s writing and background as opposed to mechanics?
Well if you do want to talk to one of them, I’ve been in those discussions and I’ve got some time to kill.
1st Question: What’s your opinion on the whole Ascalon discussion?
2nd Question: How do you think do these discussion become this bizarre almost-roleplay where people take the whole discussion so seriously?
Actually i would like to ask these questions to everyone to reads this and has an idea about it.
1. Think Ascalonians wanting to reclaim their homeland are in the right, but that Separatists are in the wrong.
2. Like Aaron said, I think people view it as a challenge to their real life sense of justice through proxy. To elaborate on this, it really kittenes me off when people talk like the Ascalonians in any way deserved the Searing. I feel like the main divide here is between people who think you can be held responsible for the actions of your ancestors or your nation and those who don’t.
(edited by Pyro.4765)
Anyway, that’s just my outsider’s way of interpreting the matter. I’ve seen several of these, but I rarely participate, and I’ve never tried to sit down someone who does to see what’s making them tick. Maybe they’d have a different way of seeing it.
Actually, it would be fascinating to see what is making them tick. It’s this weird mix of in and out of character thoughts that make real people argue like people in game.
I mean, they say stuff that Ascalonians in game would say on that matter.
Well if you do want to talk to one of them, I’ve been in those discussions and I’ve got some time to kill.
Because I’d rather not wait around in Dry Top for 10 minutes for a sandstorm that’ll inevitably drop more keys than I can spend.
Once again theres a simple solution…dont kill anything and don’t do any events
But then I’m standing around doing nothing in Dry Top for 10-30 minutes. Anyways, it’s not like adding a home instance chest would be at all negative.
Why a chest ? You don’t need to do events in order to start the sandstorm, just wait there until a sandstorm starts and run for chests.
Because I’d rather not wait around in Dry Top for 10 minutes for a sandstorm that’ll inevitably drop more keys than I can spend.

Ele and guard are both great. I don’t think engi does so great here.
Engi is an excellent Roamer class with great conditions, great sustain, permanent swiftness and great escapes. It does suffer in Zergs, however.
Really? Another one of these “People are so mean” threads?
Yeah, what they are doing is not very nice…
But seriously, harden up.
Ever read the comments on virtually any internet forum/comment section?
Honestly, I sometimes wonder how you people get through life in your sensitive little bubble.
I’ll give you one tip on how to deal with nasty people/trolls.
LAUGH. THEIR TEARS ARE YOUR LOVELY HOT MILK YOUR MUM GIVES YOU BEFORE SHE TUCKS YOU IN.
And i’ll also quote the standard “Welcome to the Internet”.
I agree that a thick skin is necessary for the internet, but I also don’t think it should be. So yeah, the short term plan should be ignoring them. In the long term? Seems kind of stupid that we’d all shut ourselves off and let kittenwad behavior be the order of the day.
All of them are found on top competitive teams in PvP. From a gameplay perspective, I think the choice depends on how much technical (button-intensive) play you want.
Guardian is probably the least technical class of the three. At least for the PvP Meditation Guardian, when to use certain skills is mostly a risk-reward analysis (ie do I use this skill for some damage or do I save it for some healing?) and not something you should be rushing to execute.
Elementalist is in the middle ground of technical, since although you can switch attunements quickly and press a lot of buttons those attunements will need time to cool down. It’s also very reactionary; a lot of playing the class is using the right defensive spell against the right attack at the right time, and knowing how long to stay in attunements.
Engineer is probably the most technical because you have 4 weapon sets with no cooldown between switching, 4 toolbelt skills, a very versatile healing skill and an elite. More than the other two classes, it’s really all about rapid and continued sequencing of your abilities; there are so many buttons that must be pressed as engi that it’s synonymous with carpal tunnel syndrome jokes.
Well, to be honest, the Living Story was part of what drove me away from the game back when I mostly played this casually. When I was only logging on a few times a week, I felt like I had an obligation to do LS activities and only LS activities because otherwise I was missing out. And if I ever stopped playing for a while to focus on other games, I’d come back feeling alienated from the story and full of disappointment for having missed things forever.
The reason I stopped playing WoW was because I felt like if I wasn’t on it every day then I was wasting money. I originally got into GW2 for the buy to play model, but ended up going on hiatus for similar reasons. Had the LS been an expansion, however, I probably wouldn’t have felt the same pressure and would have probably bought it.
I’d like to make it clear that GW2 is my mainstay now I’d love to see the LS again (were it viable). I’m not sure if my experience with season one was typical of casual players. I just thought I’d share how I felt as a casual player, and why an expansion would probably have lead me to invest more time and money in the game.
I kind of want to pair Shiro with Mallyx and Tormented gear for an Abaddon theme, though I doubt it’ll be viable.
I always feel a bit strange when I see forum posts like these. I do a fair bit of PvP and I don’t think I’ve ever run into players like this. Maybe that’s just variance, but I’m curious: do you who experience troubles play ranked? Unranked? Hotjoin? Which region do you play in?
I think whatever race they provide us with, it will be one that stretches back to GW1 (i.e Centaur or Tengu).
I’m not so sure I agree, considering that they added an unprecedented new race in vanilla GW2.
I kind of want to make an ex-Zephyrite now. One who became a Revenant, got a chance to talk to Glint directly, and then decided they weren’t actually all they were cracked up to be. Could do the same with Sylvari-Ventari.
I’m a fan of Mantras, though I don’t know that they fit Engineer when literally referred to as such. The charge-and-then-instacast system easily fits with some sort of Engineer wind-up device, but having the Engineer actually chant something to get their charges isn’t very Engineery at all.
lol, what about FPS callouts?
RELOADING! (refreshes firearm skills)
PLANTING EXPLOSIVES! (PBAoE explosion)
GET DOWN! (dodge and break stun)
SUPPRESSING FIRE! (blind and vuln)
The whole thing about the Commando being an April Fool’s day joke confirmed as an April Fool’s day joke.
I dont know about you guys, but I’d rather have a Living story update once a month plus some features updates on the way then wait for an expansion for more then half of year.
The reason why we’ve had to wait for the expansion for so long was because (as I understand it) their original plan was the first model, and when that failed it took a while to change their tactics.
They are religious zealots and should be driven back north as soon as possible.
They have strong religious beliefs but aren’t trying to forcefully convert anyone.
D/D Ele is at its most effective in and around melee range, yeah. Being melee by itself is not something that’ll completely shut a class out of PvP. Also, how a class does against Power Ranger isn’t exactly, or rather isn’t at all an indicator of how good it is (if it’s even bad against Power Ranger- it does have the destroy-projectile tablet)
I don’t see any part of centaur history that points to villainism.
I doubt you would, because they’re standing on much firmer moral ground than the Charr were (the centaur keep slaves, the Charr ate slaves). However, in the game we’re trying to thwart the evil centaur hordes and lead to believe they’re savage monsters while the Charr are the good guys. It’s a massive inconsistency, but ultimately the story of this game isn’t about consistency. Like Tachenon aptly said, the lore is just a big collage of wouldn’t it be cool if…
Another interesting, potentially worrisome question- could Abaddon or Zhaitan be channeled, and if not, why? If you’re looking for an “especially powerful imprint on the world”, it’d be difficult to beat entities that have reshaped entire regions. I suppose they could always take the easy ‘too powerful to handle’ answer, but where is the line drawn?
A newbie or reckless Revenant channeling more than they could handle might be a cool plot hook in the future. End up sort of like how Svanir did.
