It is not as easy to OC as new ones but u shold be fine, also try to turn off reflections, they hammer ur CPU very bad, also try to lower shadows quality for WvW, i actually turn them off for WvW to get the maximum possible performance, all the oter options u can just max them out with ur videocard, but those 2 are particulary CPU dependant, so no matter what videocard u have they will hammer ur frame rate.

I noticed a huge Frame rate drop aswell, also culling problems with ppl apearing from nowhere (massive zergs taking long time to render on the screen), i play WvW everyday since day 1 at least 5h per day, i know how the game performs on every battle and what happened on friday was insane, also my whole guild was having the same problem, i’d say a 40-50% performance drop on big fights. I didn’t noticed a PVE/dungeon/city FPS drops so most likelly they were something WvW culling related.

I would recomend a full system upgrade for GW2, since both CPU and GPU are under minimum System requirements, u would be aming for a 400$ system at least to run GW2 at acceptable frames. IF u are really tight on budget u could go for The AMD a10 5800k APU (CPU, and GPU on the same chip), it should perform ok for this game overall, if u have more like 600$ u can do what solarnova said above.

That was a wrong guess dude, the hd 4350 is a very low end card, and 5 years old. WoW is a very old game, and it was not graphically demanding even at launch, so u cannot compare it with GW2. U need a 100$/150$ bucks videocard to run this game how it was meant to be played an HD 7750 or NVIDIA GTX650 will run it just fine at high settings. U will notice a huge performance and graphical boost by buying a new video card, trust me, u won’t regret it.

They are probably testing something about the culling, most ppl is having the same issue in WvW, frames droped drastically in masive fights, also rendering is worst, massive zergs just appear from nothing (ppl allways complained about this, but never hapened to me before), whatever they are trying to do, they are doing it wrong.

The culling is terrible, the FPS drops are masive during WvW battles, all my guild have the same issue (we are a WvW guild, do this everyday :P but today at oppening was just terrible), they modified something for sure, probably for testing. but the performance just droped a lot compared to last week, i have about the same frames on PVE tho, but in WvW is just awfull.

Check ur GPU usage, but don’t expect miracles since the 6490m is a low end mobile graphics card, it is only a little above intel hd4000 and is significantly slower than some AMD integrated graphics solutions. Download MSI afterburner and monitor the GPU usage during gaming, if the usage is over 90%, then u can be totally sure the problem is ur videocard holding u back, in the other hand if u notice it is performing under 60% load, then the problem might be somewhere else.

U can overclock it to 4ghz easy, with that kind of cooling, for phenoms u have to raise the FSB speed tho, only increasing the multiplier won’t give u the same performance boost. U want a hyper transport/FSB speed of at least 3ghz if ur processor is runnign at 4ghz or close. Notice, at those speeds ur processor will be as fast as a 8350 stock, or very close.

Jesus christ the i7 920 is a beast CPU, old but more than capable to move this game… Whoever says it is a slow CPU or poor in single thread performance has no idea about how a CPU compare to another… that being said, i doubt the problem is related to ur video card since it shows 5% usage which sounds about right for 10 FPS, u can discard any sofware bug by installing a brand new copy of windows (dualboot) and install only the drivers and GW2. But first u should clean ur mobo, open ur case, unplug the videocard and memory sticks and using a compressed air can or a hair dryer blow air inside and clean everything specially inside the PCI slots and memory slots, dust is known for causing hardaware problems.

If u are on the budget a AMD A10 5800k processor and mobo (u can probably use ur memory PSU HDD and all the other stuff) i tested one few weeks ago and i was impressed by the results it managed to play GW2 on high/med settings (mostly MED tbh) pretty good on PVE/PVP (30-60 FPS), wasn’t amazing for WvW ( never droped below 15FPS tho) but hell is a 100$ CPU/GPU. u can get a processor and the mobo for arround 220$. Notice this chip has a integrated GPU both CPU and GPU can be overclocked up to 30% (which is amazing) and it actually runs pretty cold.
P.D: u will need at least 4gb of DDR3 1866Mghz memory or faster to make it work since the integrated GPU needs fast memory.

Did u checked the GPU usage? may be a wrong PCI-e lane or a bus speed malfunction. Also what Motherboard and power supply u have, u gotta provide a full detailed spec of ur system. 8 core CPU consumes 3 times more than ur dualcore, also if u had that dualcore on the same mobo before there might be some kind of BIOS issue, if is all brand new forget about the last part.
U cannot enable more cores to be used for specific apps, this is why the AMD fx4300 and the fx 6300 peforms about the same than eight cores in games since games are not multithreaded aplications, they run mostly on 1 core.

Ultra? NO, shadows and reflections are bugged which means they impact ur FPS very bad when turning the camera arround, no matter what kind of setup u have, if u turn shadows to high and reflections OFF (This is an advise straight from Anet btw, which means they are aware of their engine failure) u will get respectable frames. I would suggest turn everything as high as possible except for the Shadows (high only), reflections turned off and sampling to native, u don’t really need supersampling unless u play on a 40+ inch TV and that option will impact ur FPS (on PVE specially, not so much for WvW), it still might be enjoyable with supersampling on but it will cause extra stress and heat on ur card aswell.

AMD Trinity A10-5800k or AMD 8120?

Hey man the A10 is the best chip AMD has to offer in my opinion at it’s price is far better than anything intel has to offer. Overclocked it is as fast as the Fx8350 on gaming (single thread performance is about the same), and the videocard side can be overclocked up to 30%, if u use very fast DDR modules 1800mhz or faster u will get very impresive results out of it, it will most likelly run GW2 at med/high at 30FPS+. If u have a dedicated videocard u should probably consider the Fx4300 or the Fx6300, they overclock like hell (they run cooler since they don’t have a video module) and they are very cheap too, ppl recomending i3 for budget builds don’t know kitten about processors, on the budged AMD is the king as long u don’t care about ur electricity bill xD.

Which CPU for more FPS?

in Account & Technical Support

Rampage.7145

Shuyin ir right about overclocking, it dosn’t matter beyond 3.6Ghz, only marginal gains 1-5 FPS here and there, it does matter for lower clocks tho ( 2.4 ghz, laptop CPUs and such). CPU synthetic benchmarks are not comparable to game performance, a CPU may show a increse on benchmarks but none in game since the bottleneck may not be the clock speed. I don’t even Oc my 2600k beyond 4ghz for this game anymore since i realized it makes close to no difference in WvW, even frapsing the fights i have about the same preformace at 4ghz and at 5ghz. As for my phenomII, it does shows some important improvment going from 3.2ghz stock to 4ghz about 15% more frames (it actually performs about 25% slower than the i7 both clocked at 4ghz).
Notice on SHUYIN Video (which is very nice thanks for that btw) the i5 and the FX 8350 are very close in game but in synthetic benchs the i5 is up to 60% faster (cinebench for example).
Game bottleneck could be somewhere else than the processor clocks, could be somewhere on the motherboard, the memory controller (very unlikelly), or the game engine itself, take a look at lineage 2 for example, it is a ancient MMO released in 2005, it used the unreal engine 2, and on heavy PVP battles and in populated towns it performs at 5FPS no matter if u have a pentium 4 or my i7 2600k@5ghz xD, this is a good example of how a game engine can bottleneck ur system no matter how fast it is.

Rampage.7145

That is not quite true Solar, u see, for most ppl 30FPS is fine, only 5% of the ppl use high end components to get the top performance, 95% ppl playing this game do it on what u would consider media PCs or old systems and they are fine with it, otherwise the game would be a economic catastrophe for the developers, it is an MMORPG and is meant to be played on low end systems aswell, this is not crysis. So even while a core2Duo, is old it can play the game aceptably for some ppl standards, u cannot recomend to everyone a full upgrade, it would be cool but, face it, most ppl won’t upgrade their whole system to play a game.
To the OP, ur main problem is u have a integrated video chip, it will struggle with this game no matter what resolution u use, get a 100$ videocard a Radeon hd7750/hd7770, it will run well along with ur processor. U also need 4Gb of ram, and a 64 bits OS (win7/win8 only, winXP or vista will perform bad).

2 monitors is not a gaming config (ur character would be split in a half, so most likelly no 3rd/1st person game will support that). U need 3 monitors in order to play this kind of games, also ur videocard will not support that kind of configuration since it is a low en card. For a 3 monitor setup u need a high end card something arround the 300$ price tag at least with 2gb of memory or more.

upgrading my cpu

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Rampage.7145

Rampage.7145

Ur motherboard is way too old to support any decent performing CPU saddly, this game is very heavy CPU dependent so u need a very fast CPU in order to play the game ok (u won’t get perfect performance even with a 1000$ CPU so u can imagine how much horsepower u need). Also GW2 performs very bad on 32bits OS, what i would recomend is a full system upgrade. if u are un the budget of 250$ or less i would recomend an AMD FX4300+motherboard (if you know how to overclock and stuff) or intel i3-3220+motherboard, 4/8Gb of 1333Mhz ram and Coolermaster hyper 212EVO CPU cooler.
On the video side, any 100$ Video card should run this game without any trouble.

Rampage.7145

PhenomsI and not very good CPUs phenomsII are much better so, if ur mobo is capable of DDR3, and supports Phenoms2 procesors then upgrade to phenomIIx4 980BE (75$ if u can still find one of them :P) or similar. If ur motherboard do not support this features then full upgrade us system mobo+CPU+DDR3 (450$ with a decent OC capable mobo) i5 2500k recomended, don’t get IVY cuz it overclocks bad (they run hot quick) 2550k is also very good. Ur videocard is more than enough to run this game at high settings, and also a great overclocker if still need a little more performance, it won’t let u down.
I understand u don’t want to upgrade for this game only, but it is awfully optimized for multicore CPUs, so if u really want to play with decent performance i think it is the only choice u have, that or going back to WoW hehe.

What computer specs required for WvW?

in Account & Technical Support

U can actually keep ur card, get the CPU/mobo only it will give u a HUUUUGE boost in performance, then get the video card for a little eye candy details when u have more money, but card upgrade itself won’t give u any performance boost in WvW over ur GTX 260. Pretty much even the i5 overclocked at 5ghz will bottleneck the GTX 260 in WvW. The game uses Dx9 so the Dx11 card don’t even give u a visual enhancement, so u can wait until the new GPU gen comes out (Q1 2013).

Shadow pls dont post about OC’ing if you no nothing about it. OC’ing if done sensibly and right does not lower the CPU’s lifespan, even when you do go far enough to lower its lifespan its still not going below 4 years…most people replace their cpu after 4 if they are running a gaming rig anyway.

The only cpu’s that pop within 4 years are the ones used for Suicide bechmarks..hence the name :P

high end cpu’s are not getting the performance they deserve, but what they get is far more playable than running stock, old and slow cpu’s. So there is nothing wrong with my advice.

As for Intel vs AMD with GW2
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/guild-wars-2-performance-benchmark,3268-7.html

Im not saying go just by this one benchmark ..there plenty of post arounf forums and other places.
When i say go Intel for playable FPS, my idea of playable and your own may be totaly different. Also when i say WvWvW ..i dont mean 30 man fights ..i mean 100 man fights.

Still didnt change anything to what ive said.I know the benches, dont really care for them either since their not done on AMD oc’s.AMD is made to be oc’d,period.Perf of a fx8120 factory is crap,Oc’d its a beast( Mind you i went easily from 3.1 ghz to 4.8 with a simple h100 cooler and my cpu does not exceed 52c ,Ever ) .But people just judge from poor benches and reviews and intel always being hyped by everyone, and mindless sheep copying whatever people say about whatever cpu without knowing jackkitten about them.I rather judge from real life experiences, thats it basically. Most dont judge from real world experiences but these benches or what others have to say about a cpu without having tested them self.I know i beat more intels then i would lose to them with this cpu.Have you seen the vid on youtube intel core i7 980x VS AMD FX-8150,or the benches done ( the thing where you judge all your beliefs on ? ) I doubt it.And even when seeing it ,you will still deny it.

LOL +1 a guy just told me intel CPU runs cooler than AMD CPUS hahahahaha he probabaly never tryed one Even overcloked AMD’s run coolest than stock speed intel CPUs. Just saw a bench with a 990x (1000$ CPU 3 years ago) losing to a pentium g620(65$) on single thread performance. Intel cripple their chips to force u buy the more expensive ones, AMD do no cripple their chips a 100$ buldozer CPU can be overclocked to 5Ghz have u tryed to do that on a I3 :P? Yes guys intel rocks keep thinking that

Well it will give u quite a bit performance improve, but not quite as a brand new latop. if money is a problem then go for it. Buying a good performing laptop that would be arround 1200$ but it will not perform flawlessly, it will just perform ok even a 3000$ Sager laptop may not perform as well as ppl would expect (certanly not made for mobility either LOL). The 9800GTS was high end stuff so it still have some muscle i would upgrade it if i was u, but if money is not an issue go for a full upgrade any i5/i7 with clocks as close to 3ghz as posible, paired with a GTX 660m/670m will do ok using mid/high settings. I do travel a lot too so i understand u.

That is not true AMD CPU works a lot cooler than intels

Which planet have you been secluding yourself on?

That hasn’t been true in 6 or 7 years.

mmmmm in real world? i have both platforms i can tell u for experience, AMD CPUs will not go over 70c Overcloked to the limits my phenom playng GW2 never goes over 35c, 50c running prime for hours… My 2600k overcloked to 4.5ghz goes all the way up to 60°c playing GW and 72c running prime, ofc AMD CPU is designed to work at low temps, max allowed temperature of those chips is 70c, intel max temps are over 100c. I have not a bulldozer or vishare CPU to test but those works at lower voltages than phenoms so they most likelly run cooler. My cheap HP laptop using a A8 procesor overclocked to 2.8Ghz(stock 1.9) paired with a Hd 6770m dedicated graphics card runs at 83c under gaming load, and 70c the CPU alone during prime95, my sister’s MacBook with an I7 and the same video card runs at 100c while gaming, u can’t actually have it on ur legs due the metal case (both tested brand new playing the withcher2 so no dusty fans). TBH that little a8 first gen APU is the best chip i have tested in many years, price/performance/temperatures/overclockability/radeon graphics, it is a very balanced product.
And yes AMD may not outperform intel in CPU raw performance but at 500$ range an A10 or A8 will smoke anything intel have to put inside a laptop, anything featuring “intel graphics” will not perform anywhere close to AMD solutions.

I lol’ed at this, I’m using a Phenom II X4 955BE at 3.9GHz paired with an HD4890 and 8GBs of DDR3 1600MHz, I average at 1680×1050 45-50+ fps Note I use SweetFX aswell with everything but reflections, FXAA, showdows and depth blur maxed out. donno where you think AMD CPUs are any less supported by games in general then Intel CPUs ? That’s complete utter rubish, both perform well in there own right GW2 is just poorly optimized atm for both Intel and AMD, were not comparing an ARM cpu vs a desktop CPU, if we were Then you can say which one has the better support :P lolz.

AMD + laptop + games. Good luck. Hope you like your eggs hard boiled.

Let’s not be fanboys here. In a laptop you’ll want something that’s cool and fast at the same time. The best choice has been intel for decades.

In a desktop PC I regularly recommend AMD cpu’s. If you have half decent cooling, they’re indeed just as good as any intel, sometimes even better. But again, this is a laptop.

That is not true AMD CPU works a lot cooler than intels (in terms of raw temperature), Desktop CPUs max temperature is 70c so they work at 50c under full load, intel CPUS works arround 80c with a max temp of 100c (overcloked temps+decent cooling ofc). Laptop CPUs are hotter they get to 80c with max temp of 100c, This APUs (CPU+GPU on the same die) are very very cool since u don’t have dedicated graphics card inside (generating extra heat) they barelly gets to 70c under prime95 torture test i guarantee that cuz i am writing this on one of those. Any laptop with an i7 and a dedicated graphics card inside gets as hot as 100c(at least on the graphic card) at that temp u can boil an egg for sure.

I have no idea what is wrong with ur rigs, all i can recomend is to try diagnose the issue. Upgrade to a phenom x4BE 955-980, those are very respectable chips and if u can still found them they are arround 75$, they overclock to 4ghz on air on virtually any motherboard. If u have 270$ get a FX4300/FX6300+mobo, 500$ go for a i5 2500k+mobo. Phenom@4ghz will give u a min of 13FPS, the Fx4300@5ghz 16 FPS and the i5@4.7ghz 20FPS. im talking about absolute minimum which only ocurrs during a 3 sided fight inside Stonemist Castle.

The game performs about the same on AMD/intel platforms, there is not such thing as “the game don’t like AMD” “the game runs better on intel”. Non of that is true, what is true is new intel chips are much faster than AMD’s. Intel chips can process 4/4 instructions per cycle while AMD’s only 3/4 this makes AMD’s teorically 25% slower clock per clock than intel chips. Intel also have a lot advantages, they consume less power and have some other minor architecture improvmets which gives em the edge over AMD’s chips. That being said a intel chip is arround 25/40% faster clock per clock than AMD which means if u get 15FPS using an AMD quad core u will get about 20FPS using intel, if u get 5FPS on AMD u will get 7FPS using a equivalent intel which makes close to no diference at such low FPS count.
In the other hand we also have to face the fact intel dosn’t like budget gaming customers, they will allways want u buy the high end products, and here is where AMD comes into play. Intel low en chips are all multiplier locked, which means u cannot overclock them, talking about pentiums, i3, some i5s, even some i7s. While u can overclock all the AMD products+they give u more cores, which means u will get the same performance in single thread apps like games using a i3 than an fx4300 OCed but AMD chips has 4 real cores while intel don’t, and to me at least, that makes it a better CPU for the money.
OFC AMD cannot compete on the high end (200$+ CPUs) sector but face it, it is only about 5% of the market anyway.

SSD are extremlly fast storage units. Standard HDDs are mechanical, they write and read mechanically which makes them very slow due limited RPM speeds and also if files are defragmented they take ages to read the info (HDDs were invented on the 50s). SSDs are are not mechanical, they store ur files using memory blocks so write and read up process are 100x times faster in some cases, they can find a specific stored file in 1000x less time than HDDs. SSDs are expensive tho GBstorage/$ ratio is up to 10x higher than HDDs, so u normally u use a 128/240GB SSD to install ur SO and ur games and a normal HDD for storage, music, pictures, movies stuff like that. Windows 8 boot time on my PC is about 5-7 secs on my SSD, GW2 loading screens about the same, very very fast if u compare to normal load times on a standard HDD.

A8 4500M will move GW2 just fine, overclock the GPU and that is about it, will not perform well in WvW but for PVE/sPVP will be just fine low/mid settings. I personally own a A8 laptop and it performs pretty well tbh for 500$ is the best u will get bro. Go for it, the 17.3 laptop is a great deal for mid range gaming. HP laptops are very good nowdays quality has improved quite a bit over the past years, my HP laptop overclocked btoh CPU and GPU over 25% stock speed barelly gets to 80c while gaming. AMD a8 processor and AMD dedicated 6770m card. I tested a macbook with the very same video card and it got all the way up to 100c. HP is cheap yes, but the have improved they hardware a lot over the past years. I would totally recomend the g7 laptop using the A8 processor and 1600mhz DDR3 ram. it is a wise choice and the best bang for the buck u wil get at 500$, even tho i would recomend go up to 800$-1000$ range and get the i5 or i7 +a GTX640m. AMD laptop APUs is the absolute best for budget gaming, i was very impressed with this chips when i got mine tbh.

Video Card Question

the GTX 690 saturates PCI 3.0 fairly easily.

True but… the performance hit is minimum, so solar is right, actual videocards don’t need PCI-e 3.0, not even the 690

Which CPU for more FPS?

Phenom will perform better hands down+can be overclocked without trouble. Phenom overclocked performs better than the pentium in single thread apps+it has 4 cores vs 2, it has better cache and is a better chip overall, petiums are for ofice systems. If u go to a higher tier a AMD fx4300 or 6300 are better gaming CPUs than intel i3s or locked multiplier i5s due overclocking capabilities. U can never go wrong with AMD in the budget, unless the electricity bill is an issue :P since intell criple their budget CPUs to make u buy the high end products. A “K” version of an i3 would be awesome for gaming but intel has no intrest in budged gaming producs.

mid price graphics card to run GW2 ?

GW2 is not graphically intensive, even a 650ti or a hd7770 can run it maxed out those are budget options, anything higher will do. But if u don’t have a very strong CPU the game will be very choppy. It is a myth games don’t use CPU, some games and particulary this one are CPU intensive, which means if u don’t have a strong CPU u will get very low FPS regardless the graphic card u are using. For example if u have a gtx690 paired with a core2duo u will get lower FPS than a gtx650 runing along with an i5.

Note he stated that he had to reduce his graphics settings to sustain his original fps during the event. meaning his gpu was bottlenecking it the most.

A new gpu would remove that bottleneck and allow him to play at roughly the same fps with better graphics settings.

Now yes its obviose his cpu is currently a bottleneck aswell, which is lowing his fps even on low settings. BUT a new gpu will allow him to up those settings and is cheaper than switching to a OC’d intel setup at the moment.

In terms of raw performance it will likely only give a 10% increase BUT it will be 10% performance + eyecandy (grpahics settings).

That is not true some graphics settings like shadows/reflections are CPU intensive. a 560ti or even a 660ti will do absolute nothing in this case. If u don’t believe me go WvW get into a zerg using full settings, then drop shadows and reflections and see ur FPS going up. Also check u GPU load u will see at 30 FPS battle ur GPU will be sitting below 40%

Hey man download MSI afterburner and GPU-z, install em, run the game, set it up to best performance settings. go windowed mode and take a screenshot like this while having MSI afterburner and GPU-z running.
We can try diagnose the issue and fix it that way, post it and PM me in game when u do it.
