Scarlet is not acting as minion, but she can be a champion. Or is there some official rule that champion of elder dragon has to be a dragon?

I hope she’s taken over and mutated into something really horrible and twisted. It would actually make her ridiculousness worthwhile, since it would be a shock seeing such a goofy, childish villain turned into something sinister.

What do you guys hope the update will bring?

I hope the tower will bring a giant tower and krait… honestly I don’t. Krait are probably my least favorite mob after mummies. It used to be just krait, but I really really dislike how much CC a group of mummies can throw around, it’s not fun. Once Halloween is over it’ll just be krait again, though.

Makes me feel like I’m running around in Orr before they nerfed the amount of mobs there. Groups of mummies make me yell at my computer.

I wonder how people would feel if Scarlet took over the tower as her main base of operations. On one hand players finally get to go inside the tower they’ve been begging to play in since GW1, on the other hand it gets corrupted by Scarlet.

Please delete your comment before any devs see this. This is the worst idea EVER. I would cry tears of bloody rage if that were to happen.

I’d probably give up until GW3. Catch up on my reading. Learn woodworking. Something like that.

All I see on the forums is “Scarlet this. Scarlet that.”

Seems pretty popular to me.

The Scarlet discussion I see is either “I hate Scarlet” or “What’s Scarlet’s story?” (As in, how the hell does she fit in to GW.) The “I actually like Scarlet” posts are a minority.

I liked Flame and Frost for what it was, before the advent of random sky pirates and Saturday morning villains. The plot was cool, and I cared about helping Rox and Bronn along their quests.

I’m really hoping this next update brings in some seriously Lovecraftian stuff.

I expect to see her in Power Puff Girls, not GW2. Again as stated several times outside this thread, the Mad King is comical but also evil and actually disturbing, Scarlet is not. Mad King was a sucess while Scarlet was a failure in the category of Comical yet evil and serious.

This sums up my own feelings pretty well.

Actually, this gives me a great idea for what to do with Scarlet Briar. What if she attempts to establish some kind of connection with the Jungle Dragon in order to gain more power, but the connection backfires? Scarlet’s powers and personality are subsumed in service to the dragon and she’s horribly mutated in a manner similar to the powerful minions of Zhaitan. Then once she’s gone, preferably in a very satisfying cutscene that shows her destruction in graphic detail, she sets to work on her minions and begins helping transform the Molten Alliance and Aetherblades.

Now THAT would be a fitting use for Scarlet that would tie the game back in to a serious storyline.

Just kill Scarlet and be done with it please.

This article, written by Ree Soesbee, was released around the time GW2 was announced(6 years ago!) to give fans an idea of the setting in the next game. I highly recommend that you check it out if you are an avid GW fan.

To me it sets up a rather epic story arc. I and many other fans waited eagerly for 5 years to see how it would develop.

And here we are…

I am not a fan of this bi-weekly randomness. Let’s have an actual story arc.

I really like the holiday and seasonal events. Aside from that, the living story seems to be completely random, and the advent of Scarlet Briar (seriously, what the hell kind of name is that?) cemented that for me.

Scarlet and the Aetherblades don’t feel like they’re in line with the theme of Guild Wars at all; it’s just a childish pseudo-steampunk throwaway. One can only hope that the game’s writers will take the hint and squash this character and storyline before the game becomes a laughingstock.

If any scrolls are still around and intact, then it could be possible to learn their method of operation and duplicate it. I can’t see that happening quickly, though.

Then again, the scrolls might have drawn their power from their patron god, in which case they could just be scraps of paper now that the gods have left.

Yes, but it’s still a portal to the underworld. Needing to figure out how to make a one-way portal into a two-way portal (or a one-way portal in the other direction) is a much better position than not being able to make a portal at all.

True. The Norn can also physically enter the spirit world (in the early personal story), which seems like a small step towards entering the Underworld proper.

So, maybe something Norn related, combined with a little Asura gate technology? We know that Asura are already exploring The Mists with their own portals.

I started playing WoW back in ’04, and the LFG tool actually got me to play more, not less. It was great to be able to log on and jump in to a dungeon without having to wait around. To each his own, I suppose.

My 4 Ori rings/earrings of winter would be worthless to me if we lose boon duration on them. I am hoping since they are very close to Giver’s stats that we will have that choice. Still… There is no other trinkets with boon duration and no other ascended version.
All the superior runes, sigils, ascended pieces with MF and no good explanation of what we have to expect.

I’m curious about the giver’s trinkets as well. I understand that armor will be changed, but does that also mean that the snowflakes in the trinkets will be changed? It could actually make those sets useful with the right stats in place of magic find.

After chewing over what CMF posted and looking through traits and utilities, it seems like Shout does provide more of a constant stream of support and the other traits and utilities give a much different kind of support, if any. I think it will still be possible to make a support-ish build, but it will significantly alter my playstyle in the process. (Not a bad thing. I’m looking for some freshness and can always switch back if I feel like it.)

Thoughts?

Without changing your traits around from the 0/5/30/30/5 setup you can cleanse conditions with:

  • shouts/pure of voice (you said you didn’t want to use this)
  • signet of resolve (already on your build)
  • purity (already on your build)
  • contemplation of purity
  • smite condition
  • purging flames
  • bow of truth
  • light fields and projectiles/whirls from allies/self

You were interested in meditations, and while they are good at solo roaming, they are not as good in sustained life as would be something that ticks more frequently such as regeneration, writ of the merciful, altruistic healing.

The reason being is that if you don’t use the meditations on cooldown the healing potential goes away and you have a moderate gap in time before you can use the heal again. They are amazing in terms of burst heals, but not as good for sustained combat (meaning soloing champs gets tricky, but doable).

The mechanics of meditations are inherently selfish as well, so you lose a lot of group dynamics with it, at most Merciful Intervention is an ok buddy support, but again, not as good as regeneration in longer fights, good burst and mobility though.

Concecrations are very group oriented, but at the same time limited in application. Mostly see good use in WvW or even s/tPvP.

Purging flames is pretty amazing at condi removal because you can run in and out and so can your team mates. Maybe get 2 or 3 conditions off that way. Also it is a fire field to provide more of that ever so loved group might boon stacking, provides burning to enemies as well.

Hallowed ground provides stability to your group…but so does stand your ground and it is not area specific. Hallowed ground is best for longer durations of stability, but stand your ground will provide more useful because of the short cooldown and provided mobility.

Although, with Altruistic Healing and Hallowed ground ticking on multiple people, it does provide a good source of healing for you if used correctly.

Sanctuary I have a love hate thing with it. I like the projectile block and “ward” aspect of it. I hate the small bubble and weak heal, as well as I hate how easily it is to walk up to it and melee you through the bubble or even aoes can hit/push you back out of the bubble. It can buy a lot of time in PvP, but I see less use in PvE honestly.

Wall of reflection is a well known and really useful projectile reflector that is highly useful in a lot of PvE scenarios. Also it stays up a good period of time and has a fairly fast cooldown.

Some things to consider as you look for an “interesting” build to play.

Thanks! I actually do use Pure of Voice in my shout build, it’s a great boost, but yeah in a non-shout build I wouldn’t get much use. I’ll take all of this into consideration. Much appreciated.

Or just put condition cleansing utilities on your bar when you expect to get hit by serious conditions. I don’t see a need to specifically build for condition cleansing in PVE.

PvE is not a condition fest.

Awesome.

Foofad’s got it right. There are plenty of areas in PVE where conditions will destroy you without proper cleansing.

Oh yeah, like … nowhere.

If you’re dying to conditions in PvE you’re just plain bad.

So, this is the part in the grown-up discussion where instead of dismissing evidence, you instead formulate a counter-argument to our specific example of a situation which refutes your original contention.

The specific example that counters your situation is all of PvE. Nothing in the open world will drop dangerous conditions on you, I run absolutely zero condition removal on my mesmer in the aetherblade events, and run sword/pistol + sword/sword so I’m in melee myself and conditions have no effect on me, I get taken down by regular damage instead if I take hits. If you get stunned, well that’s why you have stunbreakers (in the case of the guardian just pop stand your ground). Things like burning and bleeds, you just heal away.

Dungeons aren’t even that condition-heavy either.

This thread is not about whether or not PVE has conditions. Thanks for the bumps, but this is not your thread for your particular argument.

I’ve just got my Guard to 80 and I am not good at builds, I more use trial and error. :P

But at t moment I run a GS/ScepFocus with full CoF Gear with Runes of the Dolyak on each.

I think trail and error is a good way to come up with builds. It helps you understand where your strengths and weaknesses are and lets you pick traits and gear that complement your playstyle. The tradeoff is that you have to spend a fair amount of time fiddling with your build before you can really get moving.

I’m on my phone right now and can’t look up gear. What attributes do CoF gear and Runes of the Dolyak have?

The armour has Power/Prec/Crit whilst the Dolyak Sup Rune gives: Vit/Tough and if you have all 6 gives constant health regen.

Edit for furth info: I run a Shout build 0/5/30/30/5, although this sometimes changes slightly based on circumstance.

It’s a great build. I think I’ve enjoyed it so much that I’ve neglected other parts of Guardian utilities though.

Based on my browsing around traits and slot skills, I’ve got an inkling that a Meditation-heavy build with cleric’s armor and Monk’s Focus could be decent… I’m still not sure how to make it a good support build, though.

Edit: Consecrations do seem like they carry a lot of support, on the other hand. In any case, I’m not sure what kind of runes would go with either. Something that buffs healing, maybe? Or something made from a mix and match of other runes, like my current boon setup.

For reference, here’s what I’m running at the moment:

I’ve got an ascended item in there as well, but the general idea is the same. Pow/Prec/Tough gear, Boon duration runes, Blood sigils (I can’t find it but the shield also has the “heal allies on weapon swap” sigil).

I’m tough to kill with decent damage while dishing out a ton of boons and condition removal. The elite skill allows me to spam my virtues and quickly recover them when need be. I also run GS, Hammer, and Focus as the situation requires.

Ideally, I’d like a build similar to this but utilizing different utilities in the Consecration, Meditation, or Sigil line. I’d be ok without dishing out all of the boons so long as I can still bring solid support to the party.

The problem I’m having is that I can’t really see my way around the trait lines and utilities to create something like this without shouts. Maybe I’ve been playing my current setup too long and I’ve got the blinders on because of it.

I wish I had video, but suffice it to say, Halmi Hammerfell somehow gained a random knockdown while there was a champion up below me, which caused my character to get one-shotted while prone several times before I figured out what was happening.

Might be worth looking into.

Not hard at all. And it’s not like it’s something new they started doing last week – the questions about missing sets were up within days of first ascended eq release. That was over 3 months ago – way longer than you’d need to get some icons and names into the game.
If these sets are not in the next patch, it won’t be due to some “objective problems”, but only because they for some reason don’t want to introduce them. In which case i’d expect them to explain clearly why.

True that. Very random. Good thing exotics are still good for the new world content and dungeons. That being said, not much incentive to run fractals after you’ve seen them a few times.

My main is a Guardian. Power/precision/toughness gear, boon duration runes. Talented to cleanse conditions, throw out extra boons, and heal every now and again. I love the spec. Altruistic healing means I can heal myself from empty to full with one use of Staff skill 4.

In groups I regularly see people’s health bars spike up when I use all of my Virtues at once. That’s my “oh kitten” move, just when I notice that people are hurting, quickly followed by my virtue recharge elite. Otherwise, I keep an eye on conditions and toss out shouts as necessary to convert them into boons, maybe draw conditions onto myself and cleanse them. Try to use my weapon skills to throw out even more boons, maybe a condition or two, and thanks to the armor stats I deal solid damage as well.

Nobody’s ever complained, and I imagine people love constant boons and condition removal. I think of my character as a force multiplier in groups.

Knights, yes please!

My Guardian wears Knight’s gear because it works very well for him. I could utilize other ascended gear but it would require a different spec and playstyle.

Not gonna make “demands,” because this is a game and that would be silly. What I will say is that not being able to play how I like, not understanding why some sets were left out, and not knowing if these sets will ever be in game doesn’t make me want to spend more time logged in to the game.

It seems like exotic is good enough for the world content and the events, but it really gives me no incentive to do fractals more than once, just to see the content.

It’s also a little annoying to think that people who chose a certain spec and playstyle before the introduction of ascended gear can keep playing how they like and still get fractionally stronger with gear, whereas people who chose another spec and playstyle cannot without changing how they play the game.

-Story Mode dungeons are just as hard if not harder than explorables. Either give them the same rewards as explorables or make them orders of magnitude easier to match their rewards.

-Dungeon/Group finder. Let me scan a list of people flagged as interested for particular dungeons and whisper/invite them. Do NOT autogroup me and/or port me to the dungeon when 5 people happen to be ready.

-Remove the events contesting the entrances to dungeons. Do not fix them. They serve no purpose other than needlessly keeping me from fun content.

-Nerf every Silver grade mobs damage and HP. Three Ascalonian Rangers are more dangerous than anything else in AC. More than a single Knight in TA are as well. I dont care what the rewards are. They’re cheap, overpowered, and are avoided/skipped/exploited past for good reason. The ones that aren’t dangerous just take forever to kill.

I second all of these.

It’s not fun to deal with the silver mobs, it’s just plain annoying. If the silver mobs absolutely have to be annoying (they aren’t impossible… there are ways to circumvent their obnoxious mechanics, it just isn’t fun or interesting to do) then put them in a challenge mode of the dungeon or something.

Something like the Underworld and Fissure of Woe. To this day, those remain two of my favorite MMO experiences of all time.

They felt like awesomely warped/twisted versions of the real world with their own distinct character and history, and the fact that they were only reachable through certain portals/events made them seem like truly separate places.

Also, the fact that the whole zone was a dungeon of sorts without any necessary linear progression made them very cool. We’d run around them for hours just to explore and kill the elite mobs.

They had me hooked until they introduced ascended gear. I love running through dungeons for fun. I did a ton of in GW1 (in the elite zones, which to this day are some of my favorite zones of all time), in CoH, in WoW (to a point; see below), in SWTOR, and now in GW2. Thing is, the moment that it feels like I need to constantly run content just to keep up, I’m out. This is what FotM did for me. If there is a defined end state that I can reach and play at for a decent amount of time, I’ll do it, but that’s not what’s going on with this new patch.

Then again, maybe Anet has some awesome grand plan, but they sure as heck aren’t communicating it. That’s another killer for me.
