I do not believe in this Atheism.
You’re quite free not to
Though it makes me wonder how one can believe or “not believe” in a concept that states there is nothing to believe in in the first place.
You also are moving beyond atheism. If the concept states that there is nothing to believe in, then you are denying beliefs that state that there is something to believe in (rather than simply not believing in those beliefs). It’s an important distinction.
Not really. It’s entirely logical to deny theories which can’t be proven false. It’s a common practice in statistics, actually. If there is no null hypothesis then there is no possibility of proof.
(edited by Rhialto.8423)
I understand Atheism less then I understand God/Allah. Seems to be a group of people set on letting everyone else know they are wrong.
Atheism is just the lack of a belief, you are thinking of anti-theism.
If Atheism is the lack of belief how can you get anybody to believe in it?
You don’t believe in atheism. You believe that the explanations for the universe’s phenomena don’t require the existence of a magic ghost that breaks the laws of physics and morality on a whim.
And as far as these logical tricks that you’re trying to play, good luck. The burden of proof is on religion to prove that it’s true, not on me or anyone else to prove that it’s false.
If you do believe that it’s false, however, you are going beyond atheism.
There’s a reason why theories which aren’t falsifiable aren’t considered to be valid theories.

I tried this build (6/2/6/0/0) after running some D/D and I have to say I like it a whole lot more. It just really fits the playstyle that I enjoy, what with the active signet use throughout the fight.
I didn’t understand the reasoning behind the change from Balthazar to Scavenger, but now I think I get the reasoning behind it.
Thanks for posting this build and explaining it a bit more here! Still hoping for that condition duration reduction from fire shield.
I enjoyed running out to get one or two elite skills with capture signets in GW, but if we’d had to get all of them it would have diminished my enjoyment for the game substantially. Even getting ascended to complete the story was enough of a hassle to keep me from doing it on more than one character.
Not really. It’s more like no respect for the turret engi. Nobody thinks it’s a skilled player, even if you are that one guy who plays the spec and actually is good at the game (there must be one somewhere right?). So when the turret engi smack talks like they’re actually decent people get a chuckle out of it.
Turret engineer hands down. Honestly it isn’t the build itself so much as the people who play it.
Yesterday I had a solo queue match up vs a team with a turret engineer… of course we want the point that he’s bunkering on, so two of us ran over after clearing out a different part of the map. We kill the guy, and he starts smack talking us with stuff like “kittening noobs can’t even 1v1 me” for the rest of the match. Nobody responded bc frankly who gives a kitten what an AI hero thinks, but you just know that guy thinks he’s ESL unkillable with his zero skill build.
As for other classes, I don’t really mind any of them honestly, even crazy zerk builds who burst away 80% of my house with their openers. I never thought D/D Cele Elementalist was easy to play bc you’ve got to be stacking might at every opportunity or you’re toast. The self heals are real though haha. (Could be a PEBCAK thing there.)
And here we have yet another example of “if it can be exploited, it will be.”
Not really. Consider i had no intentions of using it as an exploit, also consider i finally posted it in the bugs forums I was only trying it if it worked. If i never tried someone else would have and the same situation would of happened. I wouldn’t call this an exploit since their is no gain “make full use of and derive benefit from”. Its a bug that creates 0 advantage over other players and can’t be exploited for gain other than kitten.
Except that you knew it was wrong….and did it anyway….
Except it’s not wrong. Go ahead and read through the terms of service and see where it says you can’t equip armor skins that provide no in game benefit. Literally none whatsoever. What, is somebody going to get confused in PvP because they think they’re fighting a Revenant? Give me a break.
Seems more like people are just salty because they didn’t get into the beta.
Actually I have no issues with the fact that I didn’t get into the stress test. Wasn’t even a beta.
Using a bug, knowing its a bug, is an exploit. It doesn’t matter that it doesn’t give a tangible benefit in this instance. However, I was address the mentality in general here, not just this specific instance. It is simply another example of “if I can, I’m going to. I don’t care who it hurts” In this instance, it hurts no one, because it is simply cosmetic; however, that’s not true in all cases.
So this case is totally unrelated to someone using a bug for profit. In fact, this is exactly how many bugs are found, because people push the game’s systems to see what’s possible.
You may be annoyed by people who say “if you don’t say I can’t, then I can,” but I really dislike the attitude of “if you don’t say I can, then I can’t.”
How many awesome areas in games would be unexplored without people trying to break the map and find ways to slip through barriers that the developers put into the maps?
Now apply your mentality to real life. That’s exactly why we have to have warning tags that say things like “do not use hair dryer in the tub or shower.” Ugh. And don’t spout “but this is just a game” because if you think how people are in game / real life don’t affect the other then you are very wrong.
Those warning labels are there to prevent lawsuits and help companies maintain goodwill with their customers, not because they’re worried that people will think they’re “allowed” to make toast while they’re taking a bath.
Gonna spout a bit, too bad: Setting aside the fact that games are not real life, and comparisons between them are worthless (I don’t kill random animals in real life, I’ll even carefully remove the lizards that somehow keep making their way into my living room so they don’t get hurt by my dogs), I doubt ANet sees things the way you do. If they banned people for trying things out and then reporting them as bugs then they would get drastically fewer bug reports, which would hurt them in the long run.

My guess is they deleted items on purpose. And why not ban them? Honest players would
1. not put these skins on their items
2. report they have unlocked skins by accident from betaInstead we see some player on screenshot clearly taking advantage over that bug, and in this case deserves a ban in my opinion.
I really hope you’re kidding. Even if someone did do this intentionally and it’s not a: a bug changing character appearance or b: a clever combination of armor pieces that just looks like revenant armor, there is no game play benefit to be had from equipping any armor skin.
You must be a blast at parties, man.
Mesmers get to fight with swords too! (And having done some such training myself, there’s certainly quite a few mind-games involved in swordplay, so it fits…)
Chose Mesmer.
Lore wise Mesmers are scary. Every conversation with one is a mind game. Before you know it they have wormed their way into your mind and can do as they please with you.
Need a body guard? I’ll just suggest that you should protect me, after all wouldn’t it be great to show everyone your latest modification to your turrets and rifle?
A few copper short for an inn room? Its on the house.
Find yourself engaged in casual conversation and begin to have a panic attack? HIT THE DECKS, MASS INVISIBILITY I AM OUTTA HERE GOODBYE NERDS.Mass invisibility? Nah, Decoy is where it’s at – leave’em talking to your clone and they won’t even realise anything has changed until you make your escape.
Human mesmer here – I tend to think like a mesmer regardless of whether I’m actually playing one, so why fight my inner nature?
They’d be fooled until the clone shattered and they started bleeding.
This system makes me not want to roll new alts. I’ll stick with the 5 grandfathered characters I have right now.
Too bad, it would be fun to try a Thief, Engy, or Ranger.
It was bugged two days ago when I tried it. Very frustrating.
I’d like to see them undo a lot of the damage from the living story. Especially Kessex Hills.
I’m just going to throw my hat in and say that only the most powerful traits should have to be unlocked.
The rest should be unlocked by leveling up.
If your intent is to go for something like the capture signet, make it like the capture signets used to be: only the most powerful, build-changing abilities should require specific actions to unlock.
I haven’t made a new character in a long time and I haven’t been following the game for quite a while either.
So, I just went to the GW2 Wiki to check out the new trait system… I’m pretty speechless about how bad it is. Why force people to do all of these random activities?
Edit: I’ve been playing the GW franchise for long enough to remember running out into the wilderness with my capture signet to get the coolest abilities, so maybe that’s what they were going for here?

Sorry, but orphans burning each other is just in bad taste.
Only if they’re overcooked.
This also ties into the cries of “but it’s the LS that’s bad! Scarlet is good!” Yeah, not really. Just because Scarlet is potentially a good character on paper doesn’t make her an actual good character. The planning and concept of a character being important in large part ends once their actual portayal begins because that’s what we, the audience, see and react to. Scarlet’s poor portrayal being a symptom of the LS system or something that was flawed from the start doesn’t matter because what we are seeing of her is flawed. The best intentions don’t matter when the end result is poor. This isn’t gift giving where it’s the thought that counts.
The “Scarlet Good, LS Bad” thing is just people jumping on the WoodenPotatoes bandwagon. He thinks that any character in Scarlet’s place would be bad (or at least that’s what his video sounds like to me), but that isn’t really the case. The living story IS Scarlet, and it would be stronger if there were a better lead villain or the villain was portrayed in a better way.
Take characters like Illidan or the Lich King (different game obviously, but the principle is the same). Like Scarlet, they were uber-powerful and had their tentacles stretched out over the world in obvious ways, but they had two important differences from a character like Scarlet. First, they were based on existing lore and didn’t need to be retconned or shoehorned in. Everyone already knew they existed long before they were added in to the game. Second, we didn’t see them after every event that happened in connection to them; we saw them after a long slog during which our characters fought through their machinations and gradually became strong enough to face them. Any interaction we had with them before that was infrequent and very brief.
This is the kind of character that people would appreciate in GW2. I think the LS had real potential at the beginning and I sincerely hope they can bring the story back in line with the style and flair that is obviously present in books like Ghosts of Ascalon and Sea of Sorrows.
Wooden Potatoes goes on to say that he would be more worried if the writers decided to go back to old content. But old lore was already imagined by Anet and nothing new needs to be written, just small reveals here and there. Going back to the dragons and history taps on resources already in game, whereas the lack of history for Scarlet makes her random and arbitrary.
We do not need to face the other elder dragons directly or so soon, but we would definitely appreciate the Pact sending out scout parties and researchers to learn more about the other dragons.
This is definitely a problem with Scarlet. It makes the rest of the story leading up to her a big “what’s the point?” and breaks the lore with this steampunk-magic concoction that is so much more advanced than even what the Asura are making that it seems almost like it came from a different game.
7# none of you could write it better so quit yapping about it is badly written.
None of us are offering Scarlet as part of a product for which we expect to make money, either.
I saw this video and I don’t really agree. The Living Story doesn’t make much sense right now, yeah. We got the idea that something was building up with the Flame and Frost storyline and that just sort of petered out into what we have today, true. But Scarlet Briar is a terrible excuse for story and many people would be embarrassed to put something like that forward for public consumption.
The people have spoken. We do like Scarlet and I have evidence
I, for one, welcome Scarlet’s mashup of Jormag and Primordus. The Icy Hot Alliance.
Later, tater!
I don’t do fractals anymore simply because there’s no way I’m going to sit through a dredge fractal.
It’s extremely worrying that Arenanet thought the dredge fractal was ok. I honestly think Arenanet are so disconnected as to what the players and want and good design at this point that there is no point expecting Arenanet to produce good content.
I’ve always defended Arenanet but at this point they haven’t proven themselves capable.
I really like running dungeons (I don’t usually have time for raids) and for me the fractals are like dungeons, and that makes them good in my eyes. The Dredge fractal, however, sucks just because of the mechanics of a few annoying fights. I actually like the clown car and the final battle, but the parts in between are very tedious and not entertaining in the least. Not really what people look for in a game, in my opinion.
The difference with Kormir, Shiro, and Khilbron is that they show weakness one way or the other, they are not immortal.
Scarlet is just annoying, boring and immortal and is everywhere.
Hopefully, in the future, we might be able to look back to this and laugh at how bad it was while we are playing through an awesome story.
I played the original GW back in the nether days of 2005, and I think Khilbron was well-written. Sure he turned out to be the bad guy, but we got to interact with him as a sort of ally until he revealed his true motives. He wasn’t just sprung upon us as the leader of the titans and worshiper of Abbadon, and we weren’t expected to read interviews with the game’s writers and short stories on the GW website to understand his motives.
Scarlet came out of nowhere with no in-game explanation and no chance for our characters to get to know her character beforehand, and all of a sudden we’ve got a character whose lines and story would make Dr. Robotnik blush.
Whenever I’m running fractals and my group lands the Dredge fractal first, we just zone out and restart until we get something else. It’s really the only one that I consistently find people desperate to skip.
I find it curious how people are angry that she’s in the reactor, when we already more or less knew that from the story posted on the page a while ago. Was this… unexpected to you? Really? O.o
If anything, it confirmed that she probably won’t be “the bad guy”. She’s Chaotic Good in AD&D terms.
Yes, mass murder and invasions really fall into the Good category. If she’s anything but evil then she’s Chaotic Neutral. I hesitate to ascribe any sense of continuity or character development to her, though, since Scarlet feels about as fleshed out as a paper doll.
Hopefully this thread maintains the constructive criticism these forums require and not be deleted.
I really enjoy this game for a lot of reasons, from dodge rolling to WvW. The world was rich an immerse the moment I stepped foot into it. Once I caught up on the lore by playing Guild Wars 1, I really appreciated the story.
Then a weed named Scarlet was introduced. Sure, she felt a bit wacky, but I was okay with it at first. Then she started cropping up in everything, and it began to feel forced and unoriginal.
Now she is behind the Thaumanova Reactor and there are aether-looking items around the world with a sign saying “DO NOT TOUCH” (clearly of Scarlet design), and I’m just done.
ArenaNet writers, your players are speaking to you.
Listen closely; this is the important part:
We do not like Scarlet Briar!I originally voted for Evon, but now I’m glad he lost; I swear to god, the Abaddon fractal would have shown how Scarlet invented a time machine at some point, and was the one who originally defeated Abaddon.
Spoiler alert: Scarlet is Kormir.
I don’t see where all of the confusion about the lore is coming from. Here’s a handy infographic that will explain everything from here on out:
Here’s an update: You are not supposed to like the villain. You’re supposed to hate the villain, hate what they do, hate that you don’t understand why or how they’re doing it and get so emotional that you call for their early demise.
Judging from the majority of the reactions on these forums here, I think ANet have done a pretty good job with achieving that.
Kudos.
This horse is long past dead, but people don’t hate the Scarlet as a character because she’s a good villain, they hate her because her writing is terrible and the things she does are immersion-breaking and lore-breaking. Someone said it well in this thread already: she’s the kind of evil character that a new roleplayer would come up with, and well below the level of writing people came to expect from playing GW1.
You want a good “pulling the strings” type villain? Check out Professor Moriarty of Sherlock Holmes fame.
Professor Moriarty is nothing like any modern-day villain (Walter White et. al.). He’s ruthless and has no redeeming qualities. He is, however, an awesome, top-hat-wearing, monocle-shining evil villain, because you hate him for what he does and want to see him lose.
People don’t want to see Scarlet lose, they want to not see her anymore, period. That’s not a job well done. Do you say “job well done” when a show is cancelled because its storyline makes no sense and people don’t want to watch it anymore?
Ugh. Seriously, please don’t. I can absolutely live with Scarlet (yes, she is bland as hell, but I like Jester types) in most LW updates, because they center around something she did/is doing…but having her and her established minions (Aetherblade, Molten Alliance, Toxic Alliance) in Wintersday would really be too much.
Maybe something silly, like having her recode the toys to steal presents (in LA, much like the Grenchie…I forgot what they were called, in GW1) randomly poppuing up in the city, but nothing major. Also, I am perfectly aware that IF Anet had planned to have Scarlet play a major role in Wintersday, it would be far too late to change that ^^°
Last year’s Wintersday was amazing, from the music to the look and feel of Lion’s Arch. If there’s even a tiny portion of Scarlet in Wintersday, I won’t play it. I know I can’t be the only one who feels like this.
We did have Flame and Frost, which is norn/charr -driven.
Which Scarlet explicitly claims credit for in this latest patch. But I hear you, that one was pretty sweet when it stood on its own before the rest of this business started.
Taken straight from the patch notes:
The Antitoxin Injected indicator is a representation of the amount of antitoxin that has been pumped into the heart of the tower by the heroes of Tyria and will update periodically.
It certainly is a representation, but that says nothing about linearity. :P
Or if those heroes are live people or NPCs.
The difficulty here kind of reminds me of the Underworld or Fissure of Woe in GW1, which anyone who looks through my old comments will know that I absolutely loved. So, good job Anet!
Actually, gotta agree with that.
People scream for “more challenging content”, then it comes in the form of Tower Third Floor and it’s all: “Too hard, just rush”. Typical dungeon mentality.
Well, since we only have to complete ten achievements to get the meta it seems like we can take our time. Also, a difficult third floor prevents people from just rushing up to the story instance over and over and killing the tower in a matter of days (if that’s even possible).
The difficulty here kind of reminds me of the Underworld or Fissure of Woe in GW1, which anyone who looks through my old comments will know that I absolutely loved. So, good job Anet! I almost made it to level 3 on my own, but the champ toxic wurm stopped me… fortunately a nice group of people came along and we slaughtered it.
The Tengu are already dealing with destroyers coming up from below (according to some of their NPCs in Kessex Hills). They probably laugh at little flowers like Scarlet.
Well…pardon my implied aggression in those posts. Still, with that dialogue, it seems like they’re quite close. More than friends, but not quite lovers at least. Besides, if they were male, nearly everyone would say “oh yeah, they’re totally gay”.
No worries. I don’t have a problem with whatever choice they end up making, just expressing my opinion on the matter. As far as your choices go, C might be the most interesting as it will give people something to joke about for a while. Sort of like JD and Turk in Scrubs.
Jory doesn’t seem to have a thing for malibu mesmer barbie.
I was standing there and marjory was calling kasmeer “cupcake”. Considering she’s supposed to be the more gruff one, that seemed pretty telling.
I hope they’re just platonic friends. That would be much more interesting than just “they’re lovers, that’s why they’re close.”
The only way platonic friends would be more interesting than open lovers is if they had secret feelings that made it interesting/complicated. Otherwise, having a romantic relationship is going to naturally being more impactful on the story than “just friends”.
Check out my response to your comment on the other thread:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/livingworld/tower/Keep-Kasmeer-and-Marjory/first#post3177703
I’m sure the story will be good either way (minus the shrub-who-shall-not-be-named).
How would it be more interesting? And what’s your problem?
This is the voice I hear when I read your two comments to me:
Please no, not every pair of females in this game has to be lovers. They’re fine the way they are.
Not every pair needs to be lovers, but when the snarky one is calling other one “cupcake” and there is dialogue about them deciding what color their curtains will be then it’s pretty hard to not to see something there.
I haven’t seen the dialog about curtains, but the other stuff just seems like things really close female friends would say to each other. A close friendship often takes more time to form than a romantic attachment as well, so there’d be more opportunity for story along the way.
Besides, there’s precedence for a Bogart-type character like Marjory making same-sex friendships. Just look at Rick Blaine and Captain Renault in Casablanca. Two dudes who don’t really like each other all that much, but go from having a mutual understanding to a sort of friendship by the end of the movie.
I hope they’re just platonic friends. That would be much more interesting than just “they’re lovers, that’s why they’re close.”
Out of all the living stories to date, I love Marjory and Kasmeer the most (cetainly hope neither one of them gets killed off!). Marjory’s voice is just too sexy to be removed from game.
Oh, and I’d sure like to see an official confirmation that they are lovers! Or at least a progression to that,
A snarky necro and a cheery mesmer…think of all the potential fanfiction and fanarts!
Then again, relationship between females can be utterly intimate yet non-sexual or of a romantic nature. Calling each other pet names is not a rare concurrence especially between girls who are close. Kasmeer could just be worried about losing her friend if anything should happen (whether loss by way of death or to a psychotic salad), and Marjory could just simply enjoy having her company wherever she goes (and also, always good to have a mesmer around, hohoho!)
Please no, not every pair of females in this game has to be lovers. They’re fine the way they are.
The kittycat noise and the giant shadow worm popping up under me were great touches.
I want to see what Marjory and Lady Kasmeer do when they get inside, I really enjoyed their background dialog about the tower while they’re waiting for the other forces to breach it.
The last dungeon was great aside from a few head scratching mechanics (seriously, guys, shooting oil slicks onto walls?), and I’m sure the content here will be fun as well.
… didn’t abbadon originally get his godly powers from an old spider-god? …
Yes, it’s highly suspected it was some spider-related deity that Abaddon supplanted, called Arachnia. Problem is, knowledge of Arachnia currently only comes from unused GW1 PoI locations found in the gw.dat – so it’s not confirmed to be canon. However, there was a server named Arachnia in one of the very early BWEs… very interesting.
Oh really? I have either forgotten this or never knew it.
Now THAT would make for an interesting storyline for the Scarlet character. Not that she came upon Abaddon but that she came upon whatever was left of the spider-god, seeking revenge or rebirth through this creature that had pierced the veil to where this dethroned ‘god’ had been in ‘stasis’ .. waiting … for the right vessel to come along.
That type of tie-in would do a lot to redeem the Living Story and also Scarlet as a character, at least in my opinion.
If she’s channeling some old deity, that’d explain a lot of her beyond-believable character elements.
This would be great. I’ve said it before, but I’m hoping she’ll be transformed into some kind of minion by biting off more than she can chew.
I believe that is the general concept behind the characters. They are the new Destiny’s Edge. Marjory, Kasmeer, Rox, Braham.. we just need a couple new pieces to the puzzle.
This is what I’m hoping as well. It would be great to see them begin to interact with each other over the course of a few living story updates, maybe in 6 months to a year they’ve become a fully-fledged group.
Yes, it wasn’t tedious enough before killing brainless mobs that spam conditions, now you get to run over and finish them whilst the other 5 spam aoe conditions at the spot you are now standing on…
Don’t forget knockbacks, knockdowns, etc.
I’ve always thought that Kessex Hills was one of the most beautiful zones in the game. It’s just so rugged and yet understated. Really top notch work. If y’all can keep the living world going while still allowing us to see some of that Kessex Hills looked like before the obelisk, that would be awesome.
I really liked the way that Flame and Frost was handled. It was a slow buildup that gave us time to understand the situation and get to know the characters, and by the end of it I really cared about what was happening. Southsun was kind of that way, but a little bit shorter, and it definitely could have used more development.
What I’m saying here is TAKE YOUR TIME! Make a story that makes sense, and take the time to tell it right.
Also, please stop trying to force Scarlet on the playerbase. Her backstory is ridiculous (why has no one mentioned the super genius sylvari who’s somehow mastered every scientific discipline of every major race?), and she’s more childish than a Saturday morning cartoon villain. I don’t even play her content anymore, because I just wish she wasn’t part of the game. Totally out of sync with the rest of GW lore.
Maybe we could see some expansion into new parts of the map, or even an instanced underground zone. I’d like to explore the dwarven or asuran tunnels and see what kind of nasty things have moved in.
A snarky necro and a cheery mesmer…think of all the potential fanfiction and fanarts!
