Which race has had the most impact on each profession?

I’m going to say Human on just about all of them since they had the classes invented in GW1.

The engineer is pretty much canonically Charr. Otherwise, pretty much this.

Although, there could be long history retcons backstory we havn’t heard yet that goes more into it, but Humans were the dominant race for hundreds of years. They pretty much defined everything until the dragons brought everything crashing down around them.

Everyone needs to get past this “endgame” idea. Endgame is nothing more then a name for bad game design. GW2 just wasn’t made that way; and the complaints were addressed several weeks ago.

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/the-endgame-reimagined/

We didn’t want the endgame to be something you could only experience after a hundred hours of gameplay or after you reached some arbitrary number. We wanted it to be something that players got to experience every step along the way, spread out across the entire world of Tyria, so we’ve introduced game elements that you’d normally associate with “endgame” at every level and every possible opportunity.

To each their own. It’s going to be an inferior method though. GW2 in particular is much more action-y then other major MMO’s, so having shooter-style controls will make a much bigger difference. In PvP or the harder PvE encounters, it will probably result in defeat.

The Elementalist in GW got a major overhaul last year.

You could look at that as we might see major changes to professions in about six years, or that re-work broke the ice for them and now changes will come as needed or at least not every half decade.

Hmm true. They also did a major rework to Dervish at some point now that I think about it. I guess question is up in the air then.

3. After a week or so, was defeated by Jade Quarry allying with another server, using a server-wide TS hosted by a leet guild.
4. Crystal Desert has not had any success at WvW in the two weeks since then. Almost as if all the serious WvW’ers have left for another server. Hmmmm.

Elementalists' weaknesses

in Elementalist

Posted by: Rhyse.8179

Rhyse.8179

Yes, it’s a L2p thing. I rarely say that, but in the ele’s case it’s justified. Everything but the Staff could use some tweaks I admit, but the Staff has such a huge payoff for mastering it that it’s mind boggling.

With my build, I have access to:
Up to 9 stacks of might every 24 secs- that benefits allies too
Up to 3 burst heals, worth 50-75% of my health depending on gear, every 20 seconds-that benefits allies too.
Cripple, Immobilize, Stun, Chill, Frost Armor, Swiftness, and Retreat, making me the best kiter in the game.
Condition removal on demand
Regeneration on demand, every 10 seconds
A full 10 seconds of stability when I reach 50% health, with no skill slot used
Near perpetual vigor and ability to dodge like mad
Up to 5 burst damage skills, depending on target’s movement, which I can control anyway
Massive AOE damage or area denial
Projectile Reflection
2 blinds on short cooldowns
Knockback
A full range of conditions, most of which can be AOE (Bleed, Chill, Burn, Blind, Weakness, Vulnerability, Crippled)
A full range of boons, most of which can affect allies (Vigor, Regen, Protection, Stability, Swiftness, Might)

And all of this, I can access solo within 2-3 castings, 2 of which are usually instant. I can get even more stuff while grouped.

What other class has a list of abilities that massive? Granted, you have to master every single one of 20 weapon skills, 3 utilities, 4 proc effects, and 4 combo field types to get all of that, but it’s all there. It’s even all there at the same time, in the same build. So yes, it’s a L2P issue. I will admit that Ele is easily the hardest class in the entire game because of all those things, but the payoff is very definitely there.

How to use summoned weapons?

in Elementalist

Posted by: Rhyse.8179

Rhyse.8179

They are extremely weak, because they deny you access to your normal skills. Now, they are fine skill sets, but not worth losing your 20 normal skills.

The greatsword is situationally usefull, since the #1 skill does quite a lot of DPS. The times you can use that are rare though, since in a real fight where that dps matters you’re going to need your attunement skill to stay alive.

It’s pretty obvious that’s it’s priced with inflation in mind. The economy is still young, and and most people are still hurting from the standard gold sinks (trait manuals, repair, buying your first exotics, etc). As more people finish their multiple 80’s, and those sinks stop sucking as much gold out, and inflation starts to take hold, you’ll start to see this fall into the “expensive but obtainable” category. I actually think it’s a good thing and shows the foresight Anet has put into the skin collecting minigame.

A hybrid class of the Ritualist and Assassin would be a great fit for this- the connections to ancestral spirits makes it ripe for it.

Why the refuse to adopt an industry standard I don’t know. Something about art-yada-yada. I can only assume they havn’t looked at the screenshots, videos etc that shows how much the vertical FOV suffers on wide screen monitors, and how the art suffers in turn because you can’t see all of it at once. There was a good one comparing the lion statue in Lion’s Arch somewhere in another thread. On a widescreen resolution, you could only see half the statue at once.

About the endgame [Merged]

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Rhyse.8179

From the Devs, since apparently noone read their article last month (see my earlier post for link):

“In the past, we’ve talked about how in Guild Wars 2 we designed the game to avoid a common problem in many MMOs: grinding through chunks of boring, repetitive content to get to the occasional pockets of fun. With Guild Wars 2, we wanted the entire gameplay experience to be something that players enjoyed, regardless of how much time they could dedicate.

When we looked at the concept of “endgame” for Guild Wars 2, we designed it the same way. We didn’t want the endgame to be something you could only experience after a hundred hours of gameplay or after you reached some arbitrary number. We wanted it to be something that players got to experience every step along the way, spread out across the entire world of Tyria, so we’ve introduced game elements that you’d normally associate with “endgame” at every level and every possible opportunity."

In short, it’s a feature, not a bug.

Don’t underestimate the elixir gun. It’s got all the same utility as the rifle (minus the jump), but with a heal, a combo field, and condition damage thrown in. The acid pool is especially deadly if you cripple the target first, and the condition damage on #1 synergizes perfectly with a pistol build- and gets increased range from the same traits as well. Toss in the toolkit (that wrench hurts) or mines for a melee range finishing punch and you got it made.

I dont understand why all the “fun” casual players want everything given to them on a plater.
Its no wonder why GW2 “ends” so fast, everything is given out to everyone.

Why not just have NPCS giving out everything for free?

Take the “casual” debate back to the Blizzard forums and let it die there. It’s an idea that gets more and more outdated with each new game. In terms of game design, where developers have (in a total facepalm moment; really, how many WoW clones had to fail before they figured this out?) realized that restricting access to the majority of your game’s content to 5% of the playerbase does not result in good sales. Also in terms of player demographics, gamers are increasingly of the college-graduate age, with disposable income and limited time, and will soon become the dominant market. Especially in the PC game market, since consoles generally don’t offer the depth or customization that this older generation of gamers wants.

Regardless, putting down other players in order to justify something that benefits yourself is something that should be left to politicians and lawyers.

FOV (Field of View) - a physiological plea

in Suggestions

Posted by: Rhyse.8179

Rhyse.8179

I’m going to post in support of the OP, and say that the FOV has caused me real vision problems. Sure it doesn’t effect everyone, but it’s definately a real thing, and for those of us that it does effect it’s devastating to our ability to keep playing.

For the past two weeks or so, I’ve had this strange blurriness in my vision in the evenings. Like I could see everything fine, but when I try to focus on something, my eyes would kind of slide off it. I thought maybe it had something to do with sitting at the computer more often since GW2 came out- it coincided perfectly with my playtime. Odd that it has never happened with any other game that I have binged on, but still, it was an idea. So I tried changing my visual settings to reduce eyestrain. I used a photographer’s calibration site to get my monitor as clear as possible; I tweaked to contrast, sharpness, color balance, the works. None of it had any effect.

Yesterday I stumbled on one of these threads about setting up a custom aspect ratio. Wow. Instantly, the vision problem is gone. I can see the game clearly, and the after effects that it caused when finished playing are gone as well. It’s like my brain was getting exhausted trying to figure out the paradoxical view field (matching up a 70 degree game to the 80 or 90 degrees that the monitor actually takes up) and just gave up on keeping things in focus after a while.

There really, really needs to be a built in solution to this so I don’t have to letterbox or distort my screen (I hate it when circles aren’t circles, etc). Saying it ruins the art or gameplay is nonsense, since not being able to see it is an even better way to ruin it. Not playing at all because it affects my ability to read afterwards doesn’t do anything for the art experience, either. No need to allow extremes either; a 60-100 degree slider would be plenty. That shouldn’t impact art or gameplay in any meaningful way.

Rhyse.8179

I just tweaked my aspect ratio.

Oh. My. God. I can see again. For the past two weeks or so, I’ve had this odd blurriness in my vision, like I couldn’t focus on things properly. I was thinking about getting my glasses prescription checked, or wearing glasses at the computer (I only need for long distance till now). Turns out, it’s just the FOV messing around with my brain. If I had to guess, my brain is getting exhausted trying to translate the 70 degree FOV experience into the 80-90 deg that the monitor takes in my actual vision. It actually affected my vision away from the game after an our or two at GW2. I squinted, tried my glasses (nope, didn’t work- too close up to matter), adjusted my monitors color ratios, contrast, sharpness, resolution, antialiasing, even phase and clock. I used a professional photographers monitor calibration site and spent an hour getting my monitor to be as perfect as it technologically can, and spent another hour tweaking the color and curves in my video driver. Now, in 30 secs of adjusting aspect settings, I’m instantly cured.

I never would have thought such a simple thing had such a big effect. Anet: YOU MUST BACKPEDAL ON YOUR OFFICIAL POSITION. Add a FOV slider. It’s reprehensible that you will allow your product to harm your customers when a fix is so simple.

Oh, and I can do jumping puzzles now. That’s cool too. And my monitor has near perfect color balance now. So theres something.

“End Game” is nothing more then a name for bad game design.

The idea that you have to get through some inconsequential part of the game in order to access some “End Game” only means that the majority of your game sucks.

GW2 has rightly recognized this, and spread the game activity over all levels. Level 80 just isn’t important here; if you don’t see an endgame, it’s because you rushed to 80 and skipped past the ACTUAL game. Get used to it, roll an alt, and go enjoy the hundreds of hours of incredibly detailed content that the world provides. Or don’t roll an alt and do it while downscaled. That’s what it’s there for.

From what I understood several years ago, Anet wanted to remove levels entirely when they started GW2. They had to keep them in though because some form of progression is just too much part of the MMO genre, and people did not respond well to them being gone.

It was already commented on by Anet a couple days back… I’m not sure I can dig the post out. They asked ppl to submit reports of exact zones/locations/mob names so they could take a look at it.

AFAIK when you are in combat there’s a 30% speed penalty, so it only feels like your buffs are turned off. I find swiftness takes me up to about the non-combat base speed.

Anyone confirm which it is?
